Laser nanostructuring of thin films with ultrashort laser pulses is widely used for nanofabrication across various fields. A crucial parameter for optimizing and understanding the processes underlying laser processing is the absorbed laser fluence, which is essential for all damage phenomena such as melting, ablation, spallation, and delamination. While threshold fluences have been extensively studied for single compound thin films, advancements in ultrafast acoustics, magneto-acoustics, and acousto-magneto-plasmonics necessitate understanding the laser nanofabrication processes for functional multilayer films. In this work, we investigated the thickness dependence of ablation and delamination thresholds in Ni/Au bilayers by varying the thickness of the Ni layer. The results were compared with experimental data on Ni thin films. Additionally, we performed femtosecond time-resolved pump-probe measurements of transient reflectivity in Ni to determine the heat penetration depth and evaluate the melting threshold. Delamination thresholds for Ni films were found to exceed the surface melting threshold suggesting the thermal mechanism in a liquid phase. Damage thresholds for Ni/Au bilayers were found to be significantly lower than those for Ni and fingerprint the non-thermal mechanism without Ni melting, which we attribute to the much weaker mechanical adhesion at the Au/glass interface. This finding suggests the potential of femtosecond laser delamination for nondestructive, energy-efficient nanostructuring, enabling the creation of high-quality acoustic resonators and other functional nanostructures for applications in nanosciences.

Objective: Cachexia and nutritional problems play a major role in palliative care. Artificial nutrition such as parenteral nutrition is common but its role and indications in terminal patients remain controversial due to lack of data. Therefore, recommendations are vague. Benefits and risks of parenteral nutrition in palliative care as well as the clinical implementation of the guidelines have not been adequately studied yet., Methods: In this single-centre observational study, 72 palliative care patients were followed for 1 month. Patients with and without parenteral nutrition were analysed regarding venous access complications, oedema, weight and health-related quality of life., Results: 93% of all patients showed reduced food intake. 34 (47%) patients received parenteral nutrition. Parenteral nutrition reduced energy deficit but was not associated with quality of life. Complications with the venous accesses for parenteral nutrition were frequent. A relevant proportion of patients with planned parenteral nutrition received no or only a few days of parenteral nutrition. Moreover, patients with parenteral nutrition showed more frequent and pronounced oedema., Conclusion: The benefit-risk balance of palliative parenteral nutrition in end-of-life treatment seems to be questionable. The World Health Organization (WHO) classification of myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) comprises several entities including essential thrombocythemia (ET); primary myelofibrosis (PMF); and MPN, unclassifiable (MPN,U). Differential diagnosis between ET and early, prefibrotic PMF can be challenging but is critical because clinical course and outcome vary considerably between these entities. We have previously shown that the transcription factor nuclear factor erythroid 2 (NF-E2) is aberrantly expressed in MPN patients. Here we demonstrate that NF-E2 is mislocalized in PMF cells and that aberrant NF-E2 localization discriminates statistically highly significantly between ET and PMF. A threshold of 20% nuclear NF-E2 staining was cross-validated by ".682+ bootstrapping." Moreover, this cutoff correctly classifies diagnostic bone marrow biopsies of MPN,U patients specified upon follow-up as ET or PMF with 92% accuracy. Because interobserver concordance between independent pathologists was high (Spearman's rank correlation coefficient, 0.727), we propose that quantitative NF-E2 immunohistochemistry represents a diagnostic tool that can reliably support a differential diagnosis between ET and PMF.
