Stretchable electronics has received major attention in recent years due to the prospects of integrating electronics onto and into the human body. While many studies investigate how different conductive fillers perform in stretchable composites, the effect of different elastomers on composite performance, and the related fundamental understanding of what is causing the performance differences, is poorly understood. Here, we perform a systematic investigation of the elastomer influence on the electromechanical performance of gold nanowire-based stretchable conductors based on five chemically different elastomers of similar Young's modulus. The choice of elastomer has a huge impact on the electromechanical performance of the conductors under cyclic strain, as some composites perform well, while others fail rapidly at 100% strain cycling. The lack of macroscopic crack formation in the failing composites indicates that the key aspect for good electromechanical performance is not homogeneous films on the macroscale but rather beneficial interactions on the nanoscale. Based on the comprehensive characterization, we propose a failure mechanism related to the mechanical properties of the elastomers. By improving our understanding of elastomer influence on the mechanisms of electrical failure, we can move toward rational material design, which could greatly benefit the field of stretchable electronics.

The redox-diffusion (RD) battery concept introduces an environmentally friendly solution for stretchable batteries in autonomous wearable electronics. By utilising plant-based redox-active biomolecules and cellulose fibers for the electrode scaffold, separator membrane, and current collector, along with a biodegradable elastomer encapsulation, the battery design overcomes the reliance on unsustainable transition metal-based active materials and non-biodegradable elastomers used in existing stretchable batteries. Importantly, it addresses the drawback of limited attainable battery capacity, where increasing the active material loading often leads to thicker and stiffer electrodes with poor mechanical properties. The concept decouples the active material loading from the mechanical structure of the electrode, enabling high mass loadings, while retaining a skin-like young's modulus and stretchability. A stretchable ion-selective membrane facilitates the RD process, allowing two separate redox couples, while preventing crossovers. This results in a high-capacity battery cell that is both electrochemically and mechanically stable, engineered from sustainable plant-based materials. Notably, the battery components are biodegradable at the end of their life, addressing concerns of e-waste and resource depletion.

Soft and stretchable nanocomposites can match the mechanical properties of neural tissue, thereby minimizing foreign body reactions to provide optimal stimulation and recording specificity. Soft materials for neural interfaces should simultaneously fulfill a wide range of requirements, including low Young's modulus (<<1 MPa), stretchability (≥30%), high conductivity (>> 1000 S cm -1 ), biocompatibility, and chronic stability (>> 1 year). Current nanocomposites do not fulfill the above requirements, in particular not the combination of softness and high conductivity. Here, this challenge is addressed by developing a scalable and robust synthesis route based on polymeric reducing agents for smooth, high-aspect ratio gold nanowires (AuNWs) of controllable dimensions with excellent biocompatibility. AuNW-silicone composites show outstanding performance with nerve-like softness (250 kPa), high conductivity (16 000 S cm -1 ), and reversible stretchability. Soft multielectrode cuffs based on the composite achieve selective functional stimulation, recordings of sensory stimuli in rat sciatic nerves, and show an accelerated lifetime stability of >3 years. The objective of this study was to conduct preclinical immunogenicity and efficacy studies with several therapeutic vaccines for human papillomavirus (HPV)-16-associated cancers expressing the early antigens E5, E6, and E7 with or without E2. The viral oncoproteins were either expressed by themselves as fusion proteins or the fusion proteins were inserted genetically into herpes simplex virus (HSV)-1 glycoprotein D (gD) which, upon binding to the herpes virus entry mediator (HVEM), inhibits an early T cell checkpoint mediated by the B and T cell mediator (BTLA). This, in turn, lowers the threshold for T cell activation and augments and broadens CD8 + T cell responses to the antigens. The fusion antigens were expressed by chimpanzee adenovirus (AdC) vectors. Expression of the HPV antigens within gD was essential for vaccine immunogenicity and efficacy against challenge with TC-1 cells, which express E7 and E6 of HPV-16 but neither E5 nor E2. Unexpectedly, inclusion of E2 increased both CD8 + T cell responses to the other oncoproteins of HPV-16 and the effectiveness of the vaccines to cause the regression of sizable TC-1 tumors.

Background: Pott's Puffy tumor (PPT) is a complicated frontal sinusitis that is also described as frontal bone osteomyelitis and a localized sub periosteal abscess. Early diagnosis and immediate active treatment are necessary to prevent severe neurologic sequelae., Case Presentation: Here, we report on a case of Pott's puffy tumor in a previously healthy 13-year-old girl with a worsening headache and swelling of the frontal bone accompanied by vomiting and fever. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed osteomyelitis of the frontal bone. A foreign body was discovered and removed via endoscopy which was then followed by 6 weeks of parenteral and enteral antibiotic therapy, resulting in resolution of all symptoms., Conclusion: A complete history in terms of trauma and insect bite or foreign body in the nose is paramount for a correct diagnosis, and performing a full examination of ear, nose and throat (ENT) to rule out a foreign body is advised., Competing Interests: None., (© The Author(s).)

Experimental evidence shows that hydroxylated metal ions are often produced during cluster synthesis by atmospheric pressure spark ablation. In this work, we predict the ground state equilibrium structures of AgO k H m ± clusters ( k and m = 1-4), which are readily produced when spark ablating Ag, using the coupled cluster with singles and doubles (CCSD) method. The stabilization energy of these clusters is calculated with respect to the dissociation channel having the lowest energy, by accounting perturbative triples corrections to the CCSD method. The interatomic interactions in each of the systems have been investigated using the frontier molecular orbital (FMO), natural bond orbital (NBO) and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) methods. Many of the ground states of these ionic clusters are found to be stable, corroborating experimental observations. We find that clusters having singlet spin states are more stable in terms of dissociation than the clusters that have doublet or triplet spin states. Our calculations also indicate a strong affinity of the ionic and neutral Ag atom towards water and hydroxyl radicals or ions. Many 3-center, 4-electron (3c/4e) hyperbonds giving rise to more than one resonance structure are identified primarily for the anionic clusters. The QTAIM analysis shows that the O-H and O-Ag bonds in the clusters of both polarities are respectively covalent and ionic. The FMO analysis indicates that the anionic clusters are more reactive than the cationic ones. Using the cluster structures predicted by the CCSD method, we calculate the collision cross sections of the AgO k H m ± family, with k and m ranging from 1 to 4, by the trajectory method. In turn, we predict the electrical mobilities of these clusters when suspended in helium at atmospheric pressure and compare them with experimental measurements.

Social determinants of health (SDOH) are important predictors of poor clinical outcomes in chronic diseases, but their associations among the general cirrhosis population and liver transplantation (LT) are limited. We conducted a retrospective, multiinstitutional analysis of adult (≥18-years-old) patients with cirrhosis in metropolitan Chicago to determine the associations of poor neighborhood-level SDOH on decompensation complications, mortality, and LT waitlisting. Area deprivation index and covariates extracted from the American Census Survey were aspects of SDOH that were investigated. Among 15 101 patients with cirrhosis, the mean age was 57.2 years; 6414 (42.5%) were women, 6589 (43.6%) were non-Hispanic White, 3652 (24.2%) were non-Hispanic Black, and 2662 (17.6%) were Hispanic. Each quintile increase in area deprivation was associated with poor outcomes in decompensation (sHR [subdistribution hazard ratio] 1.07; 95% CI 1.05-1.10; P < .001), waitlisting (sHR 0.72; 95% CI 0.67-0.76; P < .001), and all-cause mortality (sHR 1.09; 95% CI 1.06-1.12; P < .001). Domains of SDOH associated with a lower likelihood of waitlisting and survival included low income, low education, poor household conditions, and social support (P < .001). Overall, patients with cirrhosis residing in poor neighborhood-level SDOH had higher decompensation, and mortality, and were less likely to be waitlisted for LT. The present investigation delves into the adverse environmental impact of atmospheric pollutant gases, specifically nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) and sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), which necessitates the identification and implementation of effective control measures. The central objective of this study is to explore the eradication of these pollutants through the utilization of aluminum Al 13 and Al 15 metal clusters, distinguished by their unique properties. The comprehensive evaluation of gas/cluster interactions is undertaken employing density functional theory (DFT). Geometric optimization calculations for all structures are executed using the ωB97XD functional and the Def2-svp basis set. To probe various interaction modalities, gas molecule distribution around the metal clusters is sampled using the bee colony algorithm. Frequency calculations employing identical model chemistry validate the precision of the optimization calculations. The quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and natural bond orbital (NBO) methodologies are applied for the analysis of intermolecular interactions. Graphene quantum dots (GQDs), a class of fluorescent carbon materials, have displayed significant potential in various fields such as energy devices, catalysis, sensing, bioimaging, and drug delivery. Because of their extremely small size, generally less than 100 nm, they also have tremendous potential in plant science research, especially for the delivery of nucleic acids, breaking the barrier of cell walls. In this study, we synthesized GQDs with a size range of 2-5 nm, characterized them, and surface-functionalized them with branched polyethylenimine (bPEI). We then used the surface-functionalized GQDs as carriers to deliver double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) that target two growth-and-development-related genes in Fusarium graminearum ─the causative organism of the Fusarium head blight disease of wheat. The successful binding of dsRNA to GQDs-bPEIs was demonstrated through gel-shifting assays, showcasing the potential for efficient dsRNA delivery. We designed dsRNAs targeting the MGV1 and RAS1 genes of F. graminearum by using the pssRNAit pipeline, ensuring high specificity and no off-target effects. The coding sequences of the designed dsRAS1 and dsMGV1 were cloned into the L4440 vector and transformed into the Escherichia coli HT115 strain for dsRNA production. Fungal culture analysis revealed that the inclusion of dsRNAs in potato dextrose agar (PDA) media effectively slowed down the growth. Exogenous spraying experiments both in plate cultures and in intact wheat spikes demonstrated that the dsRNA :GQDs-bPEIs treatment was more effective in restricting fungal mycelium growth or the number of infected spikelets compared to naked dsRNA treatment. Our study demonstrates the promising potential of graphene quantum dots as carriers for dsRNA-based fungal disease management in wheat and other crops.

Background: In the present study, we examine the prevalence of phylogenetic groups, O-serogroups, adhesin genes, antimicrobial resistance, the level of gene expression associated with biofilm formation, and the presence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) in UPEC strains isolated from both pediatric and adult patients., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 156 UPEC isolates were collected from UTI patients. ESBL-producing isolates were detected using the double-disc synergy (DDS) method, and biofilm formation was assessed through a microplate assay. The presence of O-serogroups, adhesion factors and resistance genes, including ESBLs and PMQR genes, was detected by PCR, and isolates were categorized into phylogenetic groups using multiplex PCR. Additionally, the quantitative real-time PCR method was also used to determine the expression level of genes related to biofilm., Results: During the study period, 50.6% (79/156) of the samples were obtained from children, and 49.4% (77/156) were from adults. The highest rate of resistance was to NA (91.7%), while FM (10.9%) had the lowest rate of antibiotic resistance. In addition, 67.9% (106/156) of UPEC isolates were ESBL producers. Most of UPEC isolates belonged to phylogenetic group B 2 (37.1%). This study revealed that bla CTX-M and qnrS are widely distributed among UPEC isolates. The mean expression levels of fimA genes were significantly higher in non-biofilm producers than in biofilm producers (p < 0.01)., Conclusions: The high antibiotic resistance rates in this study highlight the significance of local resistance monitoring and investigating underlying mechanisms. Our findings indicate the dominance of phylogroup B 2 and group D as the prevailing phylogenetic groups. The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the prevalence of surgical site infection (SSI) and risk factors in patients after knee surgery. A comprehensive and systematic search was carried out across various international electronic databases, including Scopus, PubMed and Web of Science, as well as Persian electronic databases like Iranmedex and the Scientific Information Database (SID). This search involved the utilization of keywords derived from Medical Subject Headings, such as 'Prevalence', 'Surgical wound infection', 'Surgical site infection' and 'Orthopaedics', spanning from the earliest records up to 1 October 2023. To assess the quality of the included studies, the Appraisal tool for Cross-Sectional Studies (AXIS tool) was utilized. The study encompassed a combined participant pool of 11 028 individuals who underwent knee surgery across seven selected studies. The collective prevalence of SSI in patients who underwent knee surgery, as reported in the seven included studies, was determined to be 3.0% (95% CI: 1.2% to 7.5%; I 2  = 96.612%; p < 0.001). The combined prevalence of SSI in patients with DM, as reported in six studies, was 5.1% (95% CI: 1.7% to 14.5%; I 2  = 79.054%; p < 0.001). Similarly, the pooled prevalence of SSI in patients with HTN, drawn from four studies, was 1.8% (95% CI: 0.7% to 4.5%; I 2  = 63.996%; p = 0.040). Additionally, the collective prevalence of SSI in patients with a history of tobacco use, based on findings from six studies, was 4.8% (95% CI: 1.4% to 15.2%; I 2  = 93.358%; p < 0.001). Subgroup analysis was conducted within six studies, categorizing them by two countries, namely China and the USA. These analyses revealed that the prevalence of SSI following knee surgery was 3.0% in China and 2.0% in the USA. It is noteworthy that variations in SSI prevalence across different studies may be attributed to a multitude of factors, particularly varying risk factors among patient populations. Background: The aim of the present study was to compare the epidemiological patterns of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2) infections, hospitalizations, deaths, and duration of hospitalization during the fourth, fifth and sixth epidemic waves of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Iran., Methods: A multicenter retrospective observational study was conducted on hospitalized patients in four hospitals in the Babol district of northern Iran. The study periods were during the fourth, fifth, and sixth waves of the epidemic in Iran, (March 2021 to March 2022). A total of 13,312 patients with suspected COVID-19 were included. Patient demographics, medical history, length of hospital stay, and clinical outcomes were obtained from the hospital information system. Data on the cycle threshold (Ct) and SARS-CoV2 variant were collected for SARS-CoV2-positive cases., Results: The highest number of hospitalized patients was reported during the fifth (Delta) wave (5231; 39.3%), while the lowest number of hospitalized patients was reported during the sixth (Omicron) wave (2143; 16.1%). In total, 6459 (48.5%) out of 13,312 hospitalized patients with suspected COVID-19 had a positive rRT-PCR result. The fifth (Delta) wave had the highest number of SARS-CoV2 rRT-PCR-positive hospitalized patients (3573, 55.3%), while the sixth (Omicron) wave had the lowest number (835, 12.9%). Moreover, 238 (3.7%) patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 died. The hospital mortality rate was 6.8% in the fourth (Alpha) wave, which reduced to 2.7 and 3.5% in the fifth (Delta) and sixth (Omicron) waves, respectively (p < 0.001)., Conclusions: This is the most comprehensive study evaluating the epidemiologic characteristics of laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV2 cases in Iran during the Alpha, Delta, and Omicron waves. The highest number of SARS-CoV2-positive hospitalized patients was in the fifth wave of COVID-19 (dominance of the Delta variant), while the sixth wave (dominance of the Omicron variant) had the lowest number. Objective. This study aim to evaluate the level of vitamin D with the incidence of febrile seizure. Method. This case-control study was conducted on 90 febrile children referred to Amirkola Children's Hospital from 19 February to 21 August 2021. Febrile children with and without seizures were considered as case and control groups, respectively. Vitamin D, calcium, phosphorus, and alkaline phosphatase were evaluated. Results. The mean level of vitamin D was not significant between the 2 groups ( P  = .62), but the mean level of alkaline phosphatase was higher in the case group, statistically ( P  = .04). 46.75% and 15.6% of case group, 28.9% and 26.7% of control group had deficiency and insufficiency levels of vitamin D, respectively ( P  = .17). Conclusion. In this study the mean level and deficiency of Vitamin D were not significant between the 2 groups. Enhancing the mechanical and thermal properties of Silicone rubber (SR)/SEBS blends using various compatibilizers opens the opportunity for such new blends to meet the market desire. For this purpose, blends with a 1:1 ratio of SR and SEBS are prepared with different amounts of EVA or SEBS-MA copolymers as compatibilizer. Mechanical properties of the blend are enhanced by adding EVA and SEBS-MA. Addition of 6 phr EVA profoundly improves the tensile strength from 7.70 to 10.06 MPa. Thermogravimetric analysis reveals that the presence of compatibilizer can improve the thermal stability of the blend, especially its initial degradation temperature (T 5% ). T 5% of the blend increases from 376 to 390 °C when comprising 6 phr SEBS-MA. Morphology of the blends is investigated using SEM and AFM. Results of the relaxation modulus curves obtained by rubber process analyzer (RPA) demonstrate that the amount of relaxation in the uncured blends is higher than the cured ones. A comparison of the relaxation of the blends indicates that the relaxation modulus of the SEBS-MA compatibilized blends is enhanced more than other blends after curing. A wide range of nanophotonic applications rely on polarization-dependent plasmonic resonances, which usually requires metallic nanostructures that have anisotropic shape. This work demonstrates polarization-dependent plasmonic resonances instead by breaking symmetry via material permittivity. The study shows that molecular alignment of a conducting polymer can lead to a material with polarization-dependent plasma frequency and corresponding in-plane hyperbolic permittivity region. This result is not expected based only on anisotropic charge mobility but implies that also the effective mass of the charge carriers becomes anisotropic upon polymer alignment. This unique feature is used to demonstrate circularly symmetric nanoantennas that provide different plasmonic resonances parallel and perpendicular to the alignment direction. The nanoantennas are further tuneable via the redox state of the polymer. Importantly, polymer alignment could blueshift the plasma wavelength and resonances by several hundreds of nanometers, forming a novel approach toward reaching the ultimate goal of redox-tunable conducting polymer nanoantennas for visible light., (© 2023 The Authors. Background: We aimed to assess the in vitro effects of the green synthesized silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) via Thymus vulgaris ( thyme ) against Leishmania major infection., Methods: We have prepared T. vulgalis silver nanoparticles (TSNPs) by adding thyme extract to the silver nitrate aqueous solution (0.2 mM), and evaluated their antileishmanial activity. The viability of L. major promastigotes was assessed in the presence of various concentrations of TSNPs by direct counting after 24 h. The MTT assay was used to identify the viability of promastigotes. The same procedures were assessed in uninfected macrophage cells. The apoptotic effects of nanoparticles on L. major promastigotes were determined by flow cytometry assay using annexin staining. To evaluate anti-amastigotes activity of TSNPs, light microscopic observation was used to determine the number of parasites within the macrophages in each well., Results: The effect of TSNPs on promastigotes and amastigotes of L . major was effective and had a reverse relationship with its concentration. TSNPs, inhibited the growth rate of L. major amastigotes and, the IC50 value of these nanoparticles was estimated 3.02 μg/mL (28 μM) after 72h. The results of flow cytometry showed that the toxic effects of TSNPs on promastigotes after 24 hours were statistically significant ( P <0.05) and showed 69.51% of apoptosis., Conclusion: TSNPs had an inhibitor effect on promastigote and amastigote forms of L. major in vitro. Breast cancer (BC) is a complex disease caused by molecular events that disrupt cellular survival and death. Discovering novel biomarkers is still required to better understand and treat BC. The reticulon-4 (RTN4) gene, encoding Nogo proteins, plays a critical role in apoptosis and cancer development, with genetic variations affecting its function. We investigated the rs34917480 in RTN4 and its association with BC risk in an Iranian population sample. We also predicted the rs34917480 effect on RTN4 mRNA structure and explored the RTN4's protein-protein interaction network (PPIN) and related pathways. In this case-control study, 437 women (212 BC and 225 healthy) were recruited. The rs34917480 was genotyped using AS-PCR, mRNA secondary structure was predicted with RNAfold, and PPIN was constructed using the STRING database. Our findings revealed that this variant was associated with a decreased risk of BC in heterozygous ( p = 0.012), dominant ( p = 0.015), over-dominant ( p = 0.017), and allelic ( p = 0.035) models. Our prediction model showed that this variant could modify RTN4's mRNA thermodynamics and potentially its translation. RTN4's PPIN also revealed a strong association with apoptosis regulation and key signaling pathways highly implicated in BC. Consequently, our findings, for the first time, demonstrate that rs34917480 could be a protective factor against BC in our cohort, probably via preceding mechanisms.

Context: The present study aims to improve the performance of optoelectronics and photovoltaics by constructing an acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) molecule with a fullerene-free acceptor moiety. The study utilizes malononitrile and selenidazole derivatives to tailor the molecule for enhanced photovoltaic abilities. The study analyzes molecular properties and parameters like charge density, charge transport, UV absorption spectra, exciton binding energies, and electron density difference maps to determine the effectiveness of the tailored derivatives., Methods: To optimize the geometric structures, the study used four different functionals (B3LYP, CAM-B3LYP, MPW1PW91, and ɷB97XD) along with a double zeta valence basis set 6-31G(d, p) basis set. The study compared the results of the tailored derivatives with a reference molecule (R-P2F) to determine improvements in performance. The light harvesting efficiency of the molecules was analyzed by performing simulations in the gas and solvent phases (chloroform) based on the spectral overlap between the solar irradiance and the absorption spectra of the molecules. The open-circuit voltage (V OC ) of each molecule was also analyzed, representing the maximum voltage that can be obtained from the cell under illuminated conditions. The findings indicated that the M1-P2F designed derivative is a more effective, with energy gap of 2.14 eV, and suitable candidate for non-fullerene organic solar cell application, based on various analyses such as power conversion efficiency, quantum chemical reactivity parameters, and electronic features., (© 2023. The highly organized collagen network of human lumbar annulus fibrosus (AF) is fundamental to preserve the mechanical integrity of the intervertebral discs. In the healthy AF, fibers are embedded in a hydrated matrix and arranged in a crosswise fashion, giving an anisotropic structure capable to undergo large strains. For finite element analysis (FEA) of spine, modelling a realistic intervertebral disc geometry has always been a challenge. This paper proposes a simple yet efficient workflow details for generating structured mesh of the ground substance of the AF and the method for generating collagen fibers with controllable angles that are embedded in AF.Clinical Relevance- The biomechanical response of spine is usually studied by finite element analysis (FEA) of the assembly of vertebra and IVD and other components. The FEA results are always dependent on the correct generation of the geometry and the material of the components. For IVD, creating structured mesh with crosswise collagen fibers with adjustable angles will provide a better control over the anisotropic property definitions of the IVD and approaching a more realistic simulation.

Soft vibrotactile devices have the potential to expand the functionality of emerging electronic skin technologies. However, those devices often lack the necessary overall performance, sensing-actuation feedback and control, and mechanical compliance for seamless integration on the skin. Here, we present soft haptic electromagnetic actuators that consist of intrinsically stretchable conductors, pressure-sensitive conductive foams, and soft magnetic composites. To minimize joule heating, high-performance stretchable composite conductors are developed based on in situ-grown silver nanoparticles formed within the silver flake framework. The conductors are laser-patterned to form soft and densely packed coils to further minimize heating. Soft pressure-sensitive conducting polymer-cellulose foams are developed and integrated to tune the resonance frequency and to provide internal resonator amplitude sensing in the resonators. The above components together with a soft magnet are assembled into soft vibrotactile devices providing high-performance actuation combined with amplitude sensing. We believe that soft haptic devices will be an essential component in future developments of multifunctional electronic skin for future human-computer and human-robotic interfaces.

We provide a comprehensive investigation of intermolecular interactions between atmospheric gaseous pollutants, including CH 4 , CO, CO 2 , NO, NO 2 , SO 2 , as well as H 2 O and Ag n ( n = 1-22) or Au n ( n = 1-20) atomic clusters. The optimized geometries of all the systems investigated in our study were determined using density functional theory (DFT) with M06-2X functional and SDD basis set. The PNO-LCCSD-F12/SDD method was used for more accurate single-point energy calculations. Compared to their isolated states, the structures of the Ag n and Au n clusters undergo severe deformations upon adsorption of the gaseous species, which become more significant as the size of the clusters decreases. Considering that, in addition to adsorption energy, we have determined the interaction and deformation energy of all the systems. All our calculations consistently show that among the gaseous species examined, SO 2 and NO 2 exhibit a higher preference for adsorption on both types of clusters, with a slightly higher preference for the Ag clusters compared to the Au clusters, with the SO 2 /Ag 16 system exhibiting the lowest adsorption energy. The type of intermolecular interactions was investigated through wave function analyses, including natural bond orbital (NBO) and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), showing that NO 2 and SO 2 are chemisorbed on the Ag n and Au n atomic clusters, whereas the other gas molecules exhibit a much weaker interaction with them. Atmospheric pollutants pose a high risk to human health, and therefore it is necessary to capture and preferably remove them from ambient air. In this work, we investigate the intermolecular interaction between the pollutants such as CO, CO 2 , H 2 S, NH 3 , NO, NO 2 , and SO 2 gases with the Zn 24 and Zn 12 O 12 atomic clusters, using the density functional theory (DFT) at the meta-hybrid functional TPSSh and LANl2Dz basis set. The adsorption energy of these gas molecules on the outer surfaces of both types of clusters has been calculated and found to have a negative value, indicating a strong molecular-cluster interaction. The largest adsorption energy has been observed between SO 2 and the Zn 24 cluster. In general, the Zn 24 cluster appears to be more effective for adsorbing SO 2 , NO 2 , and NO than Zn 12 O 12 , whereas the latter is preferable for the adsorption of CO, CO 2 , H 2 S, and NH 3 . Frontier molecular orbital (FMO) analysis showed that Zn 24 exhibits higher stability upon adsorption of NH 3 , NO, NO 2 , and SO 2 , with the adsorption energy falling within the chemisorption range. The Zn 12 O 12 cluster shows a characteristic decrease in band gap upon adsorption of CO, H 2 S, NO, and NO 2 , suggesting an increase in electrical conductivity. Natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis also suggests the presence of strong intermolecular interactions between atomic clusters and the gases. This interaction was recognized to be strong and noncovalent, as determined by noncovalent interaction (NCI) and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analyses. Plant vasculature transports molecules that play a crucial role in plant signaling including systemic responses and acclimation to diverse environmental conditions. Targeted controlled delivery of molecules to the vascular tissue can be a biomimetic way to induce long distance responses, providing a new tool for the fundamental studies and engineering of stress-tolerant plants. Here, a flexible organic electronic ion pump, an electrophoretic delivery device, for controlled delivery of phytohormones directly in plant vascular tissue is developed. The c-OEIP is based on polyimide-coated glass capillaries that significantly enhance the mechanical robustness of these microscale devices while being minimally disruptive for the plant. The polyelectrolyte channel is based on low-cost and commercially available precursors that can be photocured with blue light, establishing much cheaper and safer system than the state-of-the-art. To trigger OEIP-induced plant response, the phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) in the petiole of intact Arabidopsis plants is delivered. ABA is one of the main phytohormones involved in plant stress responses and induces stomata closure under drought conditions to reduce water loss and prevent wilting. The utilization of nanostructured materials for several biomedical applications has tremendously increased over the last few decades owing to their nanosizes, porosity, large surface area, sensitivity, and efficiency as drug delivery systems. Thus, the incorporation of functionalized and pristine nanostructures for cancer therapy offers substantial prospects to curb the persistent problems of ineffective drug administration and delivery to target sites. The potential of pristine (Ca 12 O 12 ) and formyl (-CHO)- and amino (-NH 2 )-functionalized (Ca 12 O 12 -CHO and Ca 12 O 12 -NH 2 ) derivatives as efficient nanocarriers for 5-fluorouracil (5FU) was studied at the B3LYP-GD3(BJ)/6-311++G(d,p) theoretical level in two electronic media (gas and solvent). To effectively account for all adsorption interactions of the drug on the investigated surfaces, electronic studies as well as topological analysis based on the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and noncovalent interactions were exhaustively utilized. Interestingly, the obtained results divulged that the 5FU drug interacted favorably with both Ca 12 O 12 and its functionalized derivatives. The adsorption energies of pristine and functionalized nanostructures were calculated to be -133.4, -96.9, and -175.6 kcal/mol, respectively, for Ca 12 O 12 , Ca 12 O 12 -CHO, and Ca 12 O 12 -NH2. Also, both topological analysis and NBO stabilization analysis revealed the presence of interactions among O 3 -H 32 , O 27 -C 24 , O 10 -C 27 , and N 24 -H 32 atoms of the drug and the surface. However, 5FU@Ca 12 O 12 -CHO molecules portrayed the least adsorption energy due to considerable destabilization of the molecular complex as revealed by the computed deformation energy. Objective: Some cationic anti-microbial peptides show a wide range of cytotoxic action versus malignant cells, which may lead to developing a novel group of antitumor medications. In the present study, the anticancer activity of pleurocidin-like peptide WF3 isoform X2 (AMP-WF3), from the Poecilia Mexicana fish, against leukemic cell line Jurkat was evaluated, and the cytotoxicity compared with the effects on normal cells, including peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and human dermal fibroblast (HDF) cells., Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, cells were treated with various dosages of AMP-WF3 for 24 hours. Using methyl thiazole tetrazolium salt reduction (MTT test), the effects of the AMP-WF3 on cell viability and toxicity were evaluated. The impact of this peptide on apoptotic pathways was examined using flow cytometry and Annexin V-PI stains. Additionally, the relative expression of the P53, P21 and BCL-2 genes was evaluated using a real-time polymerase chain reaction., Results: The Jurkat cell line was more susceptible to AMP-WF3 cytotoxicity [half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC 50 )=50 μM], while normal cells (PBMCs and HDF) were less susceptible. Flow cytometry verified that the apoptotic activity of AMP-WF3 on Jurkat cells was significantly higher than that of HDF and PBMCs. Peptide-treated Jurkat cells were associated with increased expression of P21, and P53 genes. In contrast, the changes in P21, P53, and BCL-2 genes differed in PBMCs and HDF cells. In HDF cells, simultaneous increase of P21, P53, and BCL-2 , and in PBMCs, only the increase of BCL-2 was observed., Conclusion: Our research showed that AMP-WF3 could be developed as a novel treatment agent with minimum side effects for ALL patients.

Immunostimulatory monoclonal antibodies (IS-mAb) have been proven to enhance the therapeutic effectiveness of various anticancer therapy. In the present investigation, we launched a separate combinational therapy for the treatment of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) using cuttlefish ink-based nanoparticles (CINPs) for photothermal therapy (PTT) and anti-OX40 antibody. Our goal was to increase the therapeutic response to the disease. CINPs were characterized by their physicochemical properties, which revealed that they had a hydrodynamic diameter ranging from 128 to 148 nm, a negative surface charge, and a high photothermal conversion efficiency under both in vitro and in vivo settings. In TNBC model, we evaluated the therapeutic effectiveness of the following groups: CINP-PTT + anti-OX40 Ab (G1), CINPs-PTT (G2), CINPs + anti-OX40 Ab (G3), anti-OX40 (G4) or PBS (G5). In each case, we assessed the efficacy of these groups against one another. The intratumor administration of all of the substances and therapies was performed. CINP-PTT + anti-OX40 Ab and CINP + anti-OX40 Ab (particularly CINP-PTT + anti-OX40 Ab) induced significant tumor regression in treated (breast) and non-treated (flank) tumor, and completely inhibited lung metastasis, thereby inducing a higher survival rate in mice in comparison to CINP-PTT, anti-OX40 Ab, or PBS. This was the case because in CINPs-treated tumors, particularly those treated with CINPs-PTT, intratumoral injection of CINPs increased the frequency of OX40, CD8 double-positive T cells. CINPs improved the conversion of the macrophage phenotype from M2 to M1 in vitro, which is significant from an immunological point of view. In addition, anti-OX40 Ab combined with CINPs or, more specifically, CINPs-PPT produced a larger frequency of preexisting and newly formed tumor-specific CD8 T cells, as well as an enhanced frequency of CD8 T cells infiltrating non-treated tumors, in comparison to respective monotherapies. Context: Density functional theory (DFT) method was employed to investigate the electronic structure properties, excited state dynamics, charge transfer, and photovoltaic potential of benzo [1,2,5] thiadiazole fused to 3,7-dimethyl-3a,6,7,7b-tetrahydro-5H-thieno[2',3':4,5]thieno[3,2-b]pyrrole to form 3,9,12,13-tetramethyl-12,13-dihydro-[1,2,5]thiadiazolo[3,4-e]thieno[2″,3″:4,5]pyrrolo[3.2-g]thieno[2',3':4,5]thieno[3,2-b]indole as the acceptor (A), bridge with thiophene as π-spacer to the donor moieties (D) which are 2,3-dihydrobenzo [b]thiophene-6-carboxylic acid (M4) and functionalized R, M1, M2, M3, and M5 to give a D-π-A-π-D. Here is the reverse combination for our molecules: the A-π-D-π-A type of chromophore configuration. It is also observed that tuning the dono-bridge configuration significantly increases the ease of charge transfer as the energy gap decreases in the order of 1.29 eV in M4 < 1.59 eV in M3 < 1.67 eV < 1.99 in M2 and 2.06 eV. The reorganization energy (RE) of M3 (0.0031) and M5 (0.0031) indicates an increase in the order of M3 > M5 > R > M2 > M4 > M1. The HOMO-LUMO indicates that the reactivity decreased, while the stability increased for the reference R at 0.990 eV, compared to the designed molecules M1-M5, with M1 being the least stable at 0.970 eV, while M4 exhibited the highest stability at 1.550 eV. The stability of the designed molecule decreased in the order of M4:1.550 > M3:1.257 > M5:1.197 > M2:1.010 > M1:0.970. Therefore, all results point to the electron-deficient core as an effective end-capped electron acceptor in M1-M5 compounds. As the ideal pair for successfully optimizing optoelectronic properties by reducing the HOMO-LUMO energy levels, reorganization energy, and binding energy and enhancing the absorption maximum and open-circuit voltage values in these designed molecules., Methods: DFT and TDDFT calculations were performed with Gaussian 16 program. Objectives: Immunotherapy has changed the landscape of oncology over the last decade and has become a standard of care for various cancers. Researchers previously demonstrated that B16-F10 melanoma in C57Bl6 mice is resistant to immune checkpoint inhibitors. The goal of this study was to investigate how anti-PD1 antibodies functioned in combination with a new antimicrobial peptide (AMP) called moronecidin-like peptide (MLP)., Materials and Methods: We studied the cytotoxic effect of AMP on the B10-F16 tumor cell line with the MTT experiment. The necrotic and apoptotic cells were determined by Presidium iodide (PI) /Annexin V staining and flow cytometry-based methods. Mice were inoculated subcutaneously with B10-F16 tumor cells in the mammary gland. Each group was sacrificed two weeks after the last injection to examine tumor-specific CD8+ T cell responses using flow cytometry., Results: Annexin V and PI staining assay revealed that MPL significantly induces apoptosis in B16F10 cells. It should be noted that MLP in combination with anti-PD-1 improved antigen-specific T-cell responses synergistically ( P =0.01) when compared with respective monotherapy. Furthermore, when compared with the respective monotherapies, combination therapy significantly controlled tumor growth in B10-F16 tumor cells and increased survival rate., Conclusion: Treatments with anti-PD-1 inhibitors alone had only a minor effect on tumor size, whereas combination therapy resulted in significant tumor growth control and increased animal survival. MLP therapy combined with anti-PD-1 antibody improves anti-tumor immune response in addition to inducing tumor cell apoptosis. Background: In this retrospective study, we investigated the outcomes and demographic characteristics of COVID-19 patients with and without a history of CVD., Methods: This large retrospective, multicenter study was performed on inpatients with suspected COVID-19 pneumonia who were admitted across four hospitals in Babol, Northern Iran.Demographic data, clinical data, and cycle threshold value (Ct) results of Real Time PCR were obtained. Then, participants were divided into two groups: (1) cases with CVDs, (2) cases without CVDs., Results: A total of 11097 suspected COVID-19 cases with a mean ± SD age of 53 ±25.3 (range: 0 to 99) years were involved in the present study. Out of whom 4599 (41.4%) had a positive RT-PCR result. Of those, 1558 (33.9%) had underlying CVD. Patients with CVD had significantly more co-morbidities such as hypertension, kidney disease, and diabetes. Moreover, 187 (12%) and 281 (9.2%) of patients with and without CVD died, respectively. Also, mortality rate was significantly high among the three groups of Ct value in patients with CVD, with the highest mortality in those with Ct between 10 and 20 (Group A = 19.9%)., Conclusions: In summary, our results highlight that CVD is a major risk factor for hospitalization and the severe consequences of COVID-19. Death in CVD group is significantly higher compared to non-CVD. Background: Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection (gonorrhoea) is associated with several pregnancy complications, including preterm labour, spontaneous abortion, stillbirth, miscarriage, growth retardation, and intrauterine death., Objectives: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the global and regional prevalence of gonorrhoea in pregnant women as a scientific basis for further studies., Data Sources: We systematically searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and SciELO databases from inception to 10 July 2022., Study Eligibility Criteria: We included cross-sectional, cohort, and case-control studies that reported the prevalence of gonorrhoea in pregnant women. In addition, we included baseline data for randomized controlled trials., Participants: Pregnant women who were tested for gonorrhoea., Methods: Pooled prevalence estimates at 95% CIs were calculated using a random-effects meta-analysis model. We stratified countries according to WHO-defined regions and socio-economic factors. Moreover, sub-group-, meta-regression, and sensitivity analyses were conducted to investigate the effects of pre-determined factors on prevalence estimates and heterogeneity., Results: We identified 235 studies (249 datasets) on 19 104 175 pregnant women from 71 countries. The worldwide pooled prevalence of gonorrhoea in pregnant women was estimated at 1.85% (95% CI 1.73-1.97%), with the highest rate in the African region (3.53%) (2.84-4.29%) and the lowest rate in the European region (0.52%) (0.27-0.84%). Overall, the prevalence estimates were high among low-income countries (3.03%), pregnant women with HIV (2.81%), and pregnant women <20 years old (8.06%). A significant decreasing trend in prevalence was observed over time (β = -0.0008, 95% CI -0.0012 to -0.0004, p 0.001)., Discussion: Our findings indicate that a substantial number of pregnant women have been infected with gonorrhoea globally, which calls for immediate public health measures to reduce the potential risk of infection. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in children typically results in similar symptoms with other viral respiratory agents including human adenoviruses (HAdVs). Mixed HAdV and SARS-CoV-2 infection (co-infection) in children might result in enhanced or reduced disease severity compared with single infections. The present study aims to investigate the rate of SARS-CoV2 and HAdV infection and also their coinfection and compare the two infections regarding their laboratory and clinical characteristics at hospital admission. A total of 360 combined oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal swab samples from hospitalized children were examined by real-time PCR for the existence of the SARS-CoV-2 and HAdVs. The symptoms, the clinical characteristics and laboratory findings were retrieved and compared in SARS-CoV-2 and HAdVs positive cases. Of the total 360 suspected COVID-19 hospitalized children, 45 (12.5%) and 19 (5.3%) specimens were PCR-positive for SARS-CoV-2 and HAdV respectively. SARS-CoV-2 and HAdV co-infection was detected in 4 cases (1.1%). Regarding symptoms at hospital admission, fever in SARS-CoV-2 positive group was significantly higher than that in HAdV positive group [34 (85%) vs. 7 (46.7%), p = 0.012]. However, percentages of cases with sore throat, headache, fatigue, lymphadenopathy and conjunctivitis in HAdV positive group were significantly higher than those in SARS-CoV-2 positive group. SARS-CoV-2 and HAdV co-infected children showed mild respiratory symptoms. Background: Acute appendicitis (AA), the most common abdominal emergency disease, is one of the most important causes of hospitalization of children. Studies have shown that white blood cell (WBC) count, mean platelet volume (MPV), C‑reactive protein (CRP), and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) can play an important role in the diagnostic prediction of appendicitis. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of WBC count, polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) percentage, MPV, CRP, and ESR for the diagnosis of AA., Methods: In this study, 100 medical records were reviewed for children referred to the hospital complaining of abdominal pain and who underwent operation with a provisional diagnosis of acute appendicitis based on clinical and laboratory findings. Patients were divided into two groups according to the pathology gold standard method: AA and the other group with acute abdominal pain without appendicitis (AAP). The diagnostic accuracy of WBC, PMNs%, MPV, ESR, and CRP were compared for patients with AA and AAP., Results: A total of 100 patients (50 with AA and 50 with AAP) were identified. The sensitivity and specificity of WBC and PMNs% were 78 and 66%, and 76 and 54%, respectively; ESR was 80 and 48%, respectively; and CRP was 82 and 62% (30-89%), respectively. A low specificity (8%) and 70% sensitivity was calculated using the cutoff point of 8.1 fl for MPV., Conclusion: Our data suggest that children with AA often present with significantly higher WBC count, ESR level, CRP level, PMNs%, and lower MPV level. The results of the study showed that WBC, CRP, and ESR, along with other diagnostic methods, can be useful in diagnosing AA in children. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the clinical characteristics, treatment and outcomes of the multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) following COVID-19 in five different geographical regions of Iran., Methods: In this multicenter observational study, patients <21 years were included between March 2020 and October 2021. By Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) checklist, demographic characteristics, comorbidities, clinical signs and symptoms, laboratory and radiology findings, and treatment were collected. Statistical analysis was using Chi-square and t-test in STATA14., Results: In total 225 patients with median age of 55 (26-96) months were included that 59.56% boys. 57.33% were admitted to the PICU with a median of 7 days (4-10). 95.56% of patients were discharged with recovery and the rest died. All of the patients in our study were included based on the MIS-C criteria. However, some patients had Kawasaki symptoms, so we compared the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of the two groups. Conjunctival injection, cervical lymphadenopathy>1.5 cm diameter, and strawberry tongue in Kawasaki-like MIS-C patients were higher than of MIS-C patients, and this difference was significant(p<0.001). The most common comorbidity was obesity (24.86%). Most patients tested for COVID-19 and about 60% of the patients had a positive test by serology or reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Gastrointestinal (88.89%) and hematologic signs (84.44%) were most common. Most drugs used in patients were IVIG and steroids. 88.07% and 61.29% of the patients had at least one problem in echocardiography and lung CT, respectively., Conclusions: The best outcome was seen in patients who were treated with both IVIG and steroids on the first days of admission. Myocarditis was common in two groups of patients. Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has different manifestations in pediatric cases. It is assumed that they might present more gastrointestinal symptoms with a different viral shedding pattern in gastrointestinal samples. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to evaluate the viral shedding pattern in gastrointestinal specimens of children with COVID-19., Methods: We searched all published studies in English language in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus, up to date as of October 2021. Our search included the term "severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, novel coronavirus, or coronavirus; and shed, excrete, secret, or carriage; and stool or rectal; and children or pediatrics". We included studies evaluating SARS-CoV-2 shedding in gastrointestinal specimens, including rectal swabs and stool samples of children with COVID-19 infection. We excluded duplicated data, case reports, and studies without original data., Results: Twelve studies met the eligibility criteria for the qualitative synthesis, 10 of which were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of gastrointestinal severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) RNA in children with COVID-19 was 86% (95% confidence interval 73%-96%, I 2  = 62.28%). After respiratory specimen had become negative, 72% (43/60) had persistent shedding in gastrointestinal specimens. The gastrointestinal RNA had a positive test result for more than 70 days after symptoms onset., Conclusions: Gastrointestinal shedding of SARS-CoV-2 might occur in a substantial portion of children and might persist long after negative respiratory testing. A novel sorbent was synthesized based on MIL-53(Al) MOF grown over an aminoclay (AC) platform, called MIL-53(Al)@AC nanocomposite, via a green and facile hydrothermal method. The nanocomposite was characterized using FT-IR, PXRD, BET, TEM, FESEM, EDS, XPS, TGA, DLS, and zeta potential analyses. BET analysis represented the porous nature and great surface area of MIL-53(Al)@AC. The high crystalline structure for the synthesized nanocomposite was verified using the PXRD pattern. FESEM, EDS, TEM, and XPS analysis proved the successful decoration of MIL-53(Al) over the AC platform. Cephalosporin antibiotics cefixime (CFX) and cephalexin (CPX), which are often present in wastewaters, were utilized to examine the sorption capacity of the nanocomposite. The significant influential factors such as pH, temperature, sorbent amount, ionic strength, and impurity were discussed. At an initial pH of 7.0 ± 0.1, the highest sorption capacities of CFX and CPX on MIL-53(Al)@AC were 784.14 and 747.91 mg g -1 ( T = 298 K, and sorbent amount = 0.1 g L -1 ), which were 1.43 and 1.47 times greater compared to that of MIL-53(Al), respectively. The evaluation of experimental results was implemented through the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm equations. The isothermal data were described nobly by the Freundlich isotherm, which confirmed multilayer adsorption on heterogeneous surfaces ( R 2 > 0.970). A kinetic study indicated that the nanocomposite could adsorb the majority of cephalosporin antibiotics within 30 min. In addition, the experimental data were evaluated via pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion models. The results indicated that the pseudo-second-order equation agreed more closely with the kinetic data ( R 2 > 0.990). Furthermore, the processes of adsorption were exothermic and spontaneous. The electrostatic attraction, hydrophobic interaction, π-π electron donor-acceptor effect, H-bond, and π-π stacking constituted the main sorption mechanisms. Finally, MIL-53(Al)@AC presented an excellent regeneration performance. Thus, the results revealed the potential application of the MIL-53(Al)@AC nanocomposite for water remediation.

The harmful compounds in various sources of smoke threaten human health. So far, many studies have investigated the effects of compounds of smoke on transcriptome changes in different human tissues. However, no study has been conducted on the effects of these compounds on transcriptome changes in different human tissues simultaneously. Hence, the present study was conducted to identify smoke-related genes (SRGs) and their response mechanisms to smoke in various human cells and tissues using systems biology based methods. A total of 6,484 SRGs were identified in the studied tissues, among which 4,095 SRGs were up-regulated and 2,389 SRGs were down-regulated. Totally, 459 SRGs were smoke-related transcription factors (SRTFs). Gene regulatory network analysis showed that the studied cells and tissues have different gene regulation and responses to compounds of smoke. The comparison of different tissues revealed no common SRG among the all studied tissues. However, the CYP1B1 gene was common among seven cells and tissues, and had the same expression trend. Network analysis showed that the CYP1B1 is a hub gene among SRGs in various cells and tissues. To the best of our knowledge, for the first time, our results showed that compounds of smoke induce and increase the expression of CYP1B1 key gene in all target and non-target tissues of human. Moreover, despite the specific characteristics of CYP1B1 gene and its identical expression trend in target and non-target tissues, it can be used as a biomarker for diagnosis and prognosis., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. Type I hypersensitivity (allergic reaction) is an unsuitable or overreactive immune response to an allergen due to cross-link immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies bound to its high-affinity IgE receptors (FcεRIs) on effector cells. It is needless to say that at least two epitopes on allergens are required to the successful and effective cross-linking. There are some reports pointing to small proteins with only one IgE epitope could cross-link FcεRI-bound IgE through homo-oligomerization which provides two same IgE epitopes. Therefore, oligomerization of allergens plays an indisputable role in the allergenic feature and stability of allergens. In this regard, we review the signaling capacity of the B cell receptor (BCR) complex and cross-linking of FcεRI which results in the synthesis of allergen-specific IgE. This review also discusses the protein-protein interactions involved in the oligomerization of allergens and provide some explanations about the oligomerization of some well-known allergens, such as calcium-binding allergens, Alt a 1, Bet v 1, Der p 1, Per a3, and Fel d 1, along with the effects of their concentrations on dimerization., (© 2022. Objective: Self-burning is one way that some people choose to commit suicide, and it has been seen in many nations. This problem is considered as an uncommon method in developed countries and a common method of suicide in developing countries. The present study aimed to identify the factors associated with self-burning among Iranian women in reproductive age., Method: This case-control study was conducted among 228 (57 cases and 171 controls) women in reproductive age from the Imam Khomeini Hospital of Ilam. A self-report questionnaire was used to determine factors associated with self-burning, including job status, domestic violence, mental health status, education levels, smoking and alcohol use, forced marriage, socioeconomic status, drug history, and family history of self-burning. Data analysis was performed using simple and multiple logistic regression to control the effects of possible confounders., Results: There was a significant positive association between self-burning and being unemployed and a housewife. Also, the presence of self-burning was increasingly associated with high domestic violence and having history of forced marriage and decreasingly associated with post-diploma education level and a high socioeconomic level., Conclusion: It is recommended that health and social policy makers pay attention to the social and economic aspects that cause self-burning in women to prevent this problem.

Induction of tumor-specific CD8 + T cell responses is known as a major challenge for cancer vaccine development; here we presented a strategy to improve peptide nanofibers-mounted antitumor immune responses. To this end, peptide nanofibers bearing class I (Kb)-restricted epitope (Epi-Nano) were formulated with polyethylene imine backbone (Epi-Nano-PEI), and characterized using morphological and physicochemicalcharacterizationtechniques. Nanofibers were studied in terms of their uptake by antigen-presenting cells (APCs), antigen cross-presentation capacity, and cytotoxic activity. Furthermore, nanofibers were assessed by their potency to induce NLRP3 inflammasome-related cytokines and factors. Finally, the ability of nanofibers to induce tumor-specific CD8 T cells and tumor protection were investigated in tumor-bearing mice. The formulation of Epi-Nano with PEI led to the formation of short strand nanofibers with a positive surface charge, a low critical aggregation concentration (CAC), and an increased resistancetoproteolytic degradation. Epi-Nano-PEI was significantly taken up more efficiently by antigen-presenting cells (APCs), and was more potent in cross-presentation when compared to Epi-Nano. Moreover, Epi-Nano-PEI, in comparison to Epi-Nano, efficiently up-regulated the expression of NLRP3, caspase-1, IL-1b, IL18 and IL-6. Cell viability analysis showed that formulation of PEI with Epi-Nano not only abolished its cytotoxic activity, but surprisingly induced macrophage proliferation. Furthermore, it demonstrated that Epi-Nano-PEI triggered robust antigen-specific CD8 + T cell responses, and induced maximum antitumor response (tumor growth inhibition and prolonged survival) in tumor-bearing mice that were significantly higher compared to Epi-Nano. Multi-trait genomic prediction (MTGP) can improve selection accuracy for economically valuable 'primary' traits by incorporating data on correlated secondary traits. Resistance to Fusarium head blight (FHB), a fungal disease of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), is evaluated using four genetically correlated traits: incidence (INC), severity (SEV), Fusarium damaged kernels (FDK), and deoxynivalenol content (DON). Both FDK and DON are primary traits; DON evaluation is expensive and usually requires several months for wheat breeders to get results from service laboratories performing the evaluations. We evaluated MTGP for DON using three soft red winter wheat breeding datasets: two diversity panels from the University of Illinois (IL) and Purdue University (PU) and a dataset consisting of 2019-2020 University of Illinois breeding cohorts. For DON, relative to single-trait (ST) genomic prediction, MTGP including phenotypic data for secondary traits on both validation and training sets, resulted in 23.4 and 10.6% higher predictive abilities in IL and PU panels, respectively. The MTGP models were advantageous only when secondary traits were included in both training and validation sets. In addition, MTGP models were more accurate than ST models only when FDK was included, and once FDK was included in the model, adding additional traits hardly improved accuracy. Evaluation of MTGP models across testing cohorts indicated that MTGP could increase accuracy by more than twofold in the early stages. Overall, we show that MTGP can increase selection accuracy for resistance to DON accumulation in wheat provided FDK is evaluated on the selection candidates., (© 2022 The Authors. Objectives: To avoid worsening from mild, moderate, and severe diseases and to reduce mortality, it is necessary to identify the subpopulation that is more vulnerable to the development of COVID-19 unfavorable consequences. This study aims to investigate the demographic information, prevalence rates of common comorbidities among negative and positive real-time reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) patients, and the association between SARS-CoV-2 cycle threshold (Ct) at hospital admission, demographic data, and outcomes of the patients in a large population in Northern Iran., Methods: This large retrospective cross-sectional study was performed from 7 March to 20 December 2020. Demographic data, including gender, age, underlying diseases, clinical outcomes, and Ct values, were obtained from 8,318 cases suspected of COVID-19, who were admitted to four teaching hospitals affiliated to Babol University of Medical Sciences (MUBABOL), in the north of Iran., Results: Since 7 March 2020, the data were collected from 8,318 cases suspected of COVID-19 (48.5% female and 51.5% male) with a mean age of 53 ± 25.3 years. Among 8,318 suspected COVID-19 patients, 3,250 (39.1%) had a positive rRT-PCR result; 1,632 (50.2%) patients were male and 335 (10.3%) patients died during their hospital stay. The distribution of positive rRT-PCR revealed that most patients (464 (75.7%)) had a Ct between 21 and 30 (Group B)., Conclusion: Elderly patients, lower Ct, patients having at least one comorbidity, and male cases were significantly associated with increased risk for COVID-19-related mortality. Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a devastating disease of wheat and barley. In the U.S.A., a significant long-term investment in breeding FHB-resistant cultivars began after the 1990s. However, to this date, no study has been performed to understand and monitor the rate of genetic progress in FHB resistance as a result of this investment. Using 20 years of data (1998 to 2018) from the Northern Uniform and Preliminarily Northern Uniform winter wheat scab nurseries that consisted of 1,068 genotypes originating from nine different institutions, we studied the genetic trends in FHB resistance within the northern soft red winter wheat growing region using mixed model analyses. For the FHB resistance traits incidence, severity, Fusarium -damaged kernels, and deoxynivalenol content, the rate of genetic gain in disease resistance was estimated to be 0.30 ± 0.1, 0.60 ± 0.09, and 0.37 ± 0.11 points per year, and 0.11 ± 0.05 parts per million per year, respectively. Among the five FHB-resistance quantitative trait loci assayed for test entries from 2012 to 2018, the frequencies of favorable alleles from Fhb 2DL Wuhan1 W14 , Fhb Ernie 3Bc , and Fhb 5A Ning7840 were close to zero across the years. The frequency of the favorable at Fhb1 and Fhb 5A Ernie ranged from 0.08 to 0.33 and 0.06 to 0.20, respectively, across years, and there was no trend in changes in allele frequencies over years. Overall, this study showed that substantial genetic progress has been made toward improving resistance to FHB. It is apparent that today's investment in public wheat breeding for FHB resistance is achieving results and will continue to play a vital role in reducing FHB levels in growers' fields.

Background: The present study aimed to investigate the one-year prevalence of SARS-CoV-2, common comorbidities and demographic information among negative- and positive rRT-PCR in health care workers (HCW), hospitalized and outpatients. Also, the association between SARS-CoV-2 cycle threshold (Ct) and the outcomes of patients were analyzed in Babol, northern Iran., Methods: This large retrospective cross-sectional study was performed between March 2020 and March 2021. The records of 19232 hospitalized, outpatients and HCW suspected to COVID-19 were collected from teaching hospitals in the North of Iran., Results: Out of the 19232 suspected to COVID-19 patients, 7251 (37.7%) had a positive rRT-PCR result; 652 (9%), 4599 (63.4%) and 2000 (27.6%) of those were categorized as HCW, hospitalized and outpatients, respectively. Moreover, between the hospitalized and the outpatient group, 10.2 and 0.8% cases died, whereas no death cases were reported in the HCW. Furthermore, it seems that death rate was significantly different between the three groups of Ct value, the highest mortality in those with Ct between 21 and 30 (group B=7.6%) and the lowest in the group with the highest Ct (between 31 and 40 = 5.5%) ( p <0.001)., Conclusion: In summary, 37.7% of cases were positive for SARS-CoV-2; of which, 63.4, 27.6 and 9% were hospitalized, outpatients and HCW, respectively. With regard to the mortality rate in hospitalized patients and the significant association with Ct under 20 and 30, it seems that the early detection and the initial quantification of SARS-CoV-2 in the first week of the conflict and therapeutic considerations to reduce the relative load can reduce the mortality rate., Competing Interests: The authors report no conflicts of interest in this work.

Background: The New coronavirus (SARS COV-2) can cause acute respiratory disease and also multiorgan dysfunction. There is insufficient data about kidney involvement in children. So, this study was done on children with COVID-19 to evaluate nephrological involvement., Methods: All children with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 who were admitted in Children Hospital .were enrolled. They were admitted in hospital from March 2020 to July 2020. Serum Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, sodium, potassium, calcium and urinalysis were evaluated. Also, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was calculated by Schertz's formula. All patients were evaluated by chest x-ray and/or computerized tomography scanning (CTS). The data were analyzed by SPSS software and P value less than 0.05 was determined as significant., Results: Forty-seven children with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 were enrolled to this study. At admission, 23.4% and 27.7% of children with COVID-19 infection had abnormal increase in serum BUN and creatinine, respectively. Also 78.8% and 25.5% of children had GFR less than 90 and 60 ml/min /1.732, respectively. Additionally, 13/47 (27.7%) of children had abnormal urine analysis (microscopic hematuria and/or proteinuria). There wasn't a significant relationship between pulmonary lesions and abnormal reduction of GFR (P<0/05)., Conclusion: In the study, the risk of AKI (acute kidney injury) and decrease of GFR and also abnormal urinalysis is high in children with COVID-19. So, more attention for detection of kidney involvement is necessary and more conservative management for prevention of AKI and decrease of GFR are recommended., Competing Interests: We declare no competing interests.

Abstract: The study was devoted to developing a novel synbiotic beverage based on with millet, rye and alfalfa sprouts with a mixed culture of Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus plantarum . In this regard, the influences of incorporated prebiotics inulin and oligofructose on probiotics viability during the refrigerated storage (4 ± 1 °C, 28 days) as well as under the simulated gastric condition were investigated. The characteristics such as microbial viability, physicochemical properties (viscosity, pH, titrable acidity and radical scavenging activity) and sensorial evaluation were assessed. The synbiotic beverage produced contained 10 8  CFU ml -1 for L. casei , with a good survival throughout the storage period (10 8  CFU ml -1 ) and L. plantarum at sufficient levels (10 6  CFU ml -1 ) after about 21 days. Inulin and oligofructose promoted the growth of the strains and their viability under cold storage while conferring higher sensory scores. In this context, the beverages demonstrated acceptable sensory attributes. The viability (bacterial survival) of over 55% for all the strains was achieved under simulated gastric condition. The study of intermolecular interactions is of great importance. This study attempted to quantitatively examine the interactions between cysteine (C 3 H 7 NO 2 S) and fullerene nanocages, C 60 , in vacuum. As the frequent introduction of elements as impurities into the structure of nanomaterials can increase the intensity of intermolecular interactions, nanocages doped with silicon and germanium have also been studied as adsorbents, C 59 Si and C 59 Ge. Quantum mechanical studies of such systems are possible in the density functional theory (DFT) framework. For this purpose, various functionals, such as B3LYP-D3, ωB97XD, and M062X, have been used. One of the most suitable basis functionals for the systems studied in this research is 6-311G (d), which has been used in both optimization calculations and calculations related to wave function analyses. The main part of this work is the study of various analyses that reveal the nature of the intermolecular interactions between the two components introduced above. The results of conceptual DFT, natural bond orbital, non-covalent interactions, and quantum theory of atoms in molecules were consistent and in favor of physical adsorption in all systems. Germanium had more adsorption energy than other dopants. The HOMO-LUMO energy gaps were as follows: C 60 : 5.996, C 59 Si: 5.309, and C59Ge: 5.188 eV at B3LYP-D3/6-311 G (d) model chemistry. The sensitivity of the adsorption increased when an amino acid molecule interacted with doped C 60 , and this capability could be used to design nanocarrier to carry cysteine amino acid., (© 2021.
