Background: Low-intensity interventions targeting a range of mental health issues offer a scalable approach for young trauma survivors in low-middle income countries., Aims: Here, we present results from a proof-of-concept, randomized, waitlist-controlled trial evaluating MemFlex, an autobiographical memory-based intervention, for trauma-exposed Afghan youth residing in Iran. MemFlex seeks to reduce the negative and overgeneral memory biases which maintain and predict poor mental health., Materials and Methods: Young people aged 12-18 years (N = 40) with parents who had experienced forced migration from Afghanistan were recruited from high schools in Karaj City in Iran. All had experienced a traumatic event in the last year. Participants were randomized to receive four weeks of a group-based delivery of MemFlex or Waitlist. Our primary cognitive outcome was autobiographical memory flexibility, that is, the ability to deliberately retrieve any memory type on demand. Primary clinical outcome was emotional distress, measured on the Farsi version of the Hopkins Symptom Checklist., Results: Results indicated that MemFlex participants demonstrated large effect sizes for pre-to-post improvement in memory flexibility (d = 2.04) and emotional distress (d = 1.23). These improvements were significantly larger than Waitlist (ds < .49), and were maintained at three-month follow-up., Discussion: Positive benefits were observed for completion of MemFlex, and future comparison against an active intervention appears warranted., Conclusion: Further evaluation of MemFlex in this context may offer a low-cost, and low-resource intervention to improve access to psychological intervention for young migrants in low-middle income countries., (© 2024 The Authors. The external magnetic fields resulting from electronic devices around humans have become more prevalent nowadays, and studying their influence on living matter is a required task. Here, we experimentally model the movement of RBCs in veins under an external magnetic field; we monitor the sedimentation of multiple RBCs at different distances from a surrounding wall. The monitoring is performed in 3D by incorporation of digital holographic microscopy (DHM). DHM not only provides a 3D quantitative phase image of an RBC but also, through its numerical refocusing feature, 3D trajectories of several cells in the field of view can be obtained. Our results show that the magnetic field facilitates the sedimentation of cells, and the effect is higher in proximity to the walls. Hyperspectral (HS) imaging bridges conventional imaging into spectroscopy and generates a spatial map of spectral variations. On the one hand, in HS imaging, the effect of the background on the final spectra has to be removed or managed. On the other hand, there are important classes of materials that need to be immobilized for investigation. In this Letter, we introduce acoustic trapping (AT) for contactless, nondestructive, and easy-to-implement immobilization of particles of up to several mm sizes, subjected to HS imaging experiments. We apply and validate the combined HS-AT apparatus for the identification of plastics, which these days have caused a multifaceted environmental pollution threat. We show that fluorescent HS imaging provides distinguishable fluorescent spectral signatures for an array of different acoustically trapped plastics. Moreover, the HS-AT enables tomographic spatio-spectral information of multi-component plastic samples by means of their acoustically controlled rotation. The integrated HS-AT has the potential to serve as a benchtop identification device.

Self-healing hydrogels are emerging materials capable of restoring functionality after damage, making them highly suitable for biomedical applications, such as tissue engineering, wound healing, and drug delivery. In this study, we synthesize and characterize a novel biodegradable, conductive, and self-healing hydrogel. The synthesis is based on a Schiff base formed between gelatin and hyaluronic acid, and the dynamic reversible Schiff base bond provides the self-healing property. To characterize and assess the self-healing behavior of the hydrogel, dynamic speckle pattern (DSP) analysis is introduced as a non-destructive, non-contact, and easy-to-implement method. Speckle patterns are formed upon scattering of laser light from a diffusive matter and includes a huge overall information about the sample, to be extracted by statistical processing. DSP analysis is employed to monitor the self-healing process of the hydrogel at both macroscopic and microscopic scales. Experimental procedure involve in situ acquisition of speckle patterns over time under controlled environmental conditions, followed by statistical analysis to evaluate the internal dynamics of the healing process. Several statistical parameters are computed for real-time monitoring of the self-healing property of the hydrogel. The findings, on the one hand, underscore the potential of Schiff base hydrogels in advanced biomedical applications where self-healing properties are critical for sustained performance and longevity. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) play a fundamental role in angiogenesis. Herein, we introduce digital holographic microscopy (DHM) for the 3D quantitative morphological analysis of HUVECs in extracellular matrix (ECM)-based biomaterials as an angiogenesis model. The combination of volumetric information from DHM and the physicochemical and cytobiocompatibility data provided by fluorescence microscopy and cytology offers a comprehensive understanding of the angiogenesis-related parameters of HUVECs within the ECM. DHM enables label-free, non-contact, and non-invasive 3D monitoring of living samples in real time, in a quantitative manner. In this study, the human amniotic membrane (HAM) is decellularized, pulverized, and combined with sodium alginate hydrogel to provide an in vitro substrate for modeling HUVEC angiogenesis. Our results demonstrate that modifying alginate hydrogel with HAM enhances its biofunctionality due to the presence of ECM components. Background: Numerous attempts have been devoted to designing anti-angiogenic agents as a strategy to slow tumor growth and progression. Clinical applications of conventional anti-angiogenic agents face some challenges, e.g., off-target effects for TKIs and also low solid tumor penetration for mAbs. Furthermore, although anti-angiogenic therapy provides a normalization window for better chemo-RT response, in long-term treatments, tumor hypoxia as a result of total removal of VEGF-A by mAbs from the TME or complete blockade of TK receptors induces over-activation of compensatory angiogenic pathways, causing escape. Herein, we investigate the efficacy of si-DOX-DC-EVs to reduce glioma angiogenesis and invasiveness., Methods: Mature DCs were generated from PBMC and EVs were isolated from the DCs culture media. siRNA and Doxorubicin were loaded into EVs by EP and incubation. Afterward, the uptake of DC-EVs was assessed by flow cytometry, and the subcellular localization of EVs was tested by confocal imaging. Tube formation assay was performed to assess the efficacy of si-DOX-DC-EVs to reduce tumor angiogenesis which was analyzed by DHM. Morphometric analysis of apoptotic cells was performed by DHM and confocal imaging and further, ELISA was performed for hypoxia-related and angiogenic cytokines. The impact of our theranostic system "si-DOX-DC-MVs" on the formation of vascular mimics, colonies, and invasion of C6 cells was checked in vitro. Afterward, orthotropic rat models of glioma were generated and the optimal administration route was selected by in vivo fluorescent analysis. Then, the microvessel density, vimentin expression, and accumulation of immune cells in tumoral tissues were assessed by IHC. Finally, necropsy and autopsy analyses were performed to check the safety of our theranostic agent., Results: DC-EVs loaded with si-DOX-DC-EVs were successfully uptaken by cells with different subcellular trafficking for MVs and exosomes, reduced tumor angiogenesis in DHM analysis, and induced apoptosis in tumoral cells. Moreover, using DHM, we performed a detailed label-free analysis of tip cells which suggested that the tip cells in si-DC-MV treatments lost their geometrical migration capacity to form tube-like structures. Furthermore, the ELISAs performed highlighted that there is a mild overactivation of compensatory Tie2/Ang2 pathway after VEGF-A blockade which confers with severe hypoxia and sustains normal angiogenesis which is the optimal goal of anti-angiogenesis therapy for cancer to avoid resistance.The results of our VM analyses indicated that si-DOX-DC-MVs completely inhibited VM process. Moreover, the invasion, migration, and colony formation of the C6 cells treated with si-DOX-MVs were the least among all treatments. IN was the optimal route of administration. The MVD analyses indicated that si-DOX-DC-MVs reduced the number of tumoral microvessels and normalized vessel morphology. Intense CD8+ T cells were observed near the tumoral vessels in the si-DOX-DC-MVs group and with minimal activation of MT (low Vimentin expression). Necropsy and toxicology results proved that the theranostic system proposed is safe., Conclusions: DC-EVs loaded with VEGF-A siRNA and Doxorubicin were more potent than BV alone as a multi-disciplinary strategy that combats glioma growth by cytotoxic impacts of DOX and inhibits angiogenesis by VEGF-A siRNAs with excess immunologic benefits from DC-EVs. Introduction: Modeling the blood-brain barrier has long been a challenge for pharmacological studies. Up to the present, numerous attempts have been devoted to recapitulating the endothelial barrier in vitro to assess drug delivery vehicles' efficiency for brain disorders. In the current work, we presented a new approach for analyzing the morphometric parameters of the cells of an insert co-culture blood-brain barrier model using rat brain astrocytes, rat brain microvascular endothelial cells, and rat brain pericytes. This analytical approach could aid in getting further information on drug trafficking through the blood-brain barrier and its impact on the brain indirectly., Methods: In the current work, we cultured rat brain astrocytes, rat brain microvascular endothelial cells, and rat brain pericytes and then used an insert well to culture the cells in contact with each other to model the blood-brain barrier. Then, the morphometric parameters of the porous membrane of the insert well, as well as each cell type were imaged by digital holographic microscopy before and after cell seeding. At last, we performed folate conjugation on the surface of the EVs we have previously tested for glioma therapy in our previous work called VEGF-A siDOX-EVs and checked how the trafficking of EVs improves after folate conjugation as a clathrin-mediated delivery setup. the trafficking and passage of EVs were assessed by flow cytometry and morphometric analysis of the digital holographic microscopy holograms., Results: Our results indicated that EVs successfully entered through the proposed endothelial barrier assessed by flow cytometry analysis and furthermore, folate conjugation significantly improved EV passage through the blood-brain barrier. 3D imaging provides crucial details about the objects and scenes that may not be obtained via 2D imaging methods. However, there are several applications in which the object to be 3D-imaged requires to be immobilized. The integrated digital holographic microscopy (DHM) and optical trapping (OT) system is a useful solution for such a task, but both DHM and OT are mostly suitable for microscopic specimens. Here, for the first time to the best of our knowledge and as an analogy to the DHM-OT system, we introduce integral imaging (InIm) and acoustic trapping (AT) integrated system for 3D imaging of immobilized mesoscopic and macroscopic objects. Post-processing of InIm data enables reconstructing the scene at any arbitrary plane, therefore, it re-focuses any particular depth of the object, which is a curtail task, especially when the object is trapped by AT. Introduction: Glial brain tumours are highly mortal and are noted as major neurosurgical challenges due to frequent recurrence or progression. Despite standard-of-care treatment for gliomas, the prognosis of patients with higher-grade glial tumours is still poor, and hence empowering antitumour immunity against glioma is a potential future oncological prospect. This review is designed to improve our understanding of the efficacy of cell-based immunotherapies for glioma., Methods and Analysis: This systematic review will be performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A comprehensive search of main electronic databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, ISI Web of Science EMBASE and ProQuest will be done on original articles, followed by a manual review of review articles. Only records in English and only clinical trials will be encountered for full-text review. All the appropriate studies that encountered the inclusion criteria will be screened, selected and then will undergo data extraction step by two independent authors. For meta-analyses, data heterogeneity for each parameter will be first evaluated by Cochran's Q and I2 statistics. In case of possible heterogeneity, a random-effects meta-analysis will be performed and for homogenous data, fixed-effects models will be selected for reporting the results of the proportional meta-analysis. We present a simple high-resolution approach for 3D and quantitative phase imaging (QPI). Our method makes the most of a glass microsphere (MS) for microscopy and a glass plate for lateral shearing self-referencing interferometry. The single MS serves all the functions of a microscope objective (MO) in digital holographic microscopy (DHM) while offering the advantages of compactness, lightness, and affordability. A proof-of-concept experiment is performed on a standard diffraction grating, and various effective parameters on the imaging performance are investigated. The results are validated by atomic force microscopy and Mirau-DHM, and 3D morphometric information of the sample under inspection is obtained. The technique is then applied for 3D quantitative measurement and visualization of a human red blood cell, proving the principle of our easy-to-implement and vibration-immune arrangement for high-contrast label-free QPI of biological samples, and its utility in cell morphology, identification, and classification.

Hyperspectral microscopy (HSM) combines conventional microscopy with basic hyperspectral imaging and results in 3D microscopic spatio-spectral information. The combination comes along with a variety of applications, such as detection and classification of different material properties through spectral fingerprints, which otherwise cannot be detected with a color camera alone. However, similar to other microscopies, the resolution of HSM is limited by diffraction. In recent years microsphere (MS)-assisted microscopy has attracted intensive attention for resolution enhancement. Here, we extend the MS idea into HSM. We show that MS-HSM reveals extra hyperspectral information about the specimen which is lost without it. Moreover, the insertion of MS results in super-resolved images. The resolution enhancement and obtaining the extra hyperspectral information can be tuned by the MS size.

Spiropyran (SP)-based dynamic materials undergo structural changes in response to external stimuli. In this paper, we show that digital holographic microscopy (DHM) is an effective candidate for characterisation of SPs (embedded in polymer matrices) and for monitoring of their dynamical changes. The polymer matrices are polylactic acid (PLA) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films, which are decorated with SPs and immobilised on graphene quantum dots (GQDs). GQDs are modified by benzylamines prior to the loading of SP species because of the enhancement of hydrophobic characteristics. UV irradiation is used as the external stimulus and the dynamical changes of the samples before and after UV irradiation are measured. DHM is arranged on a novel self-referencing setup, which substantially reduces the sensitivity of DHM to environmental vibrations. Morphometric information for characterisation of the samples is obtained by analysis of the recorded digital holograms. Biopolymer-based bioactive hydrogels are excellent wound dressing materials for wound healing applications. They have excellent properties, including hydrophilicity, tunable mechanical and morphological properties, controllable functionality, biodegradability, and desirable biocompatibility. The bioactive hydrogels were fabricated from bacterial cellulose (BC), gelatin, and graphene oxide (GO). The GO-functionalized-BC (GO- f -BC) was synthesized by a hydrothermal method and chemically crosslinked with bacterial cellulose and gelatin using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as a crosslinker. The structural, morphological, and wettability properties were studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and a universal testing machine (UTM), respectively. The swelling analysis was conducted in different media, and aqueous medium exhibited maximum hydrogel swelling compared to other media. The Franz diffusion method was used to study curcumin (Cur) release (Max = 69.32%, Min = 49.32%), and Cur release kinetics followed the Hixson-Crowell model. Fibroblast (3T3) cell lines were employed to determine the cell viability and proliferation to bioactive hydrogels. Antibacterial activities of bioactive hydrogels were evaluated against infection-causing bacterial strains. Bioactive hydrogels are hemocompatible due to their less than 0.5% hemolysis against fresh human blood. When a parallel beam of light illuminates an aperture, the uncertainty principles require associating probability amplitude to a photon at each point of the aperture. Superposition of the amplitudes at the observation point behind the aperture, determines the probability that the photon strikes the point. In this paper, we show that this "photon approach" explains several optical concepts. The approach is applied to study the diffraction from a single slit, double slit, and transmission phase step. Then, we apply it to explain the diffraction from a bi-prism and a Michelson's interferometer, and show that the photon approach to the appearance of the interference fringes is more reasonable than the wave approach. We deduce the coherence behavior of light from the uncertainty principles, and finally, we use the photon approach to extract the ray optics laws and image formation formulae.

Optical diffractometry (OD) using a phase step is an alternative for interferometry, further, has least sensitivity to environmental vibrations. Therefore, OD has found numerous interesting metrological and technological applications. OD utilizes a phase step to detect the influence of objects under measurement by the changes in the Fresnel diffraction pattern. Recently, we showed that such measurements do not require infinitively sharp phase steps, although fabrication of such sharp elements is also impossible. Here, we address the issue of smoothness of the phase step surfaces. So far, in all of the OD applications the surfaces of the incorporated phase steps are considered to be optically smooth and flat. However, practically, some amount of roughness and unflatness is unavoidable even in precise and careful fabrication process. We show that preserving the OD-diffraction-pattern characteristics of a phase step depends on the level of roughness in the surfaces of the phase step. We define number of detectable fringes and autocorrelation functions of the diffraction patterns as the measures for evaluating the similarity of the rough phase step diffractions to the ideal case. There is an increasing interest in non-destructive and real-time high-resolution approaches for corrosion studies in metals. In this paper, we propose the dynamic speckle pattern method as a low-cost, easy-to-implement, and quasi in-situ optical technique for the quantitative evaluation of pitting corrosion. This type of corrosion occurs in a specific area of a metallic structure and causes holes formation leading to structural failure. A Custom 450 stainless steel sample, placed in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution and applied to a [Formula: see text] potential to initiate the corrosion, is used as the sample. The speckle patterns formed by the scattering of a He-Ne laser light is changed over time due to any corrosion in the sample. Periodontitis is a highly prevalent infectious disease that causes the progressive destruction of the periodontal supporting tissues. If left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss impairing oral function, aesthetics, and the patient's overall quality of life. Guided and Bone Tissue Regeneration (GTR/BTR) are surgical therapies based on the placement of a membrane that prevents epithelial growth into the defect, allowing the periodontal/bone cells (including stem cells) to regenerate or restore the affected tissues. The success of these therapies is commonly affected by the local bacterial colonization of the membrane area and its fast biodegradation, causing postoperative infections and a premature rupture of the membrane limiting the regeneration process. This study presents the antibacterial and osteogenic differentiation properties of polycaprolactone-gelatin (PCL-G) electrospun membranes modified with ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs). The membranes´ chemical composition, surface roughness, biodegradation, water wettability, and mechanical properties under simulated physiological conditions, were analyzed by the close relationship with their biological properties. The PCL-G membranes modified with 1, 3, and 6% w/w of ZnO-NPs showed a significant reduction in the planktonic and biofilm formation of four clinically relevant bacteria; A. actinomycetemcomitans serotype b , P. gingivalis , E. coli , and S. epidermidis . Additionally, the membranes presented appropriate mechanical properties and biodegradation rates to be potentially used in clinical treatments. Notably, the membranes modified with the lowest concentration of ZnO-NPs (1% w/w) stimulated the production of osteoblast markers and calcium deposits in human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSC) and were biocompatible to human osteoblasts cells (hFOB). These results suggest that the PCL-G membranes with 1% w/w of ZnO-NPs are high-potential candidates for GTR/BTR treatments, as they were the most effective in terms of better antibacterial effectiveness at a lower NPs-concentration while creating a favorable cellular microenvironment for bone growth., (Creative Commons Attribution license.)

Introduction: Emotion recognition is the main component of social cognition and has various patterns in different cultures and nationalities. The present study aimed to investigate emotion recognition patterns among Iranians using the Cambridge neuro-psychological test automated battery (CANTAB) as a valid neuropsychological test., Methods: In this descriptive-analytical study, 117 males and females (Mean±SD of age 32.1±6.4) were initially assessed by computerized intelligence and progressive matrices of RAVEN-2. Furthermore, the excitement recognition subtest taken from the Cambridge neuro-psychological test automated battery (CANTAB) was performed. The correct response of participants to each of the six basic emotions as well as the recognition time was used for analysis., Results: The maximum correct response rate was 75.83% related to happy emotion. The correct responses for sadness, surprise, disgust, anger, and fear were 70%, 68.48%, 47.84%, 42.54%, and 38.26%, respectively. Moreover, the shortest recognition time was related to disgust at 322 ms, while sadness with a mean response time of 1800 ms and fear response time at 1529 ms indicated the longest recognition time. In addition, participants recognized happiness with a mean response time of 1264 ms better than other emotions; however, post-hoc t-test analyses showed that only the correct responses for sadness and surprised emotions did not differ significantly, (t(112)=-0.59, P=0.55, d=0.05). These results suggested that different emotions have various correct responses. However, sadness and surprise did not differ., Conclusion: The findings of this study could be beneficial for evaluating cognitive elements, as well as cognitive abilities and inabilities among the Iranian population. The researchers assessed 117 Iranian adults, both males and females, using a computer-based test. Participants were asked to identify six basic emotions (happiness, sadness, anger, disgust, fear, and surprise) displayed on a screen. The researchers measured the participants' accuracy in identifying each emotion and the time it took them to recognize it. The findings revealed that Iranians were most accurate in recognizing happiness and least accurate in recognizing fear. They were better at identifying positive emotions like happiness and surprise compared to negative emotions like disgust and anger. Participants took the least time to recognize disgust and the longest time to recognize sadness and fear. These results show that Iranians have specific patterns in recognizing emotions, which can be influenced by cultural factors. They highlight the need to consider cultural differences in emotion recognition, as it can impact communication and social interactions. The study's outcomes can be valuable for various applications. Furthermore, these findings can be useful for professionals, such as employees in customer service or mental health providers, who need to accurately interpret others' emotions. Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) of biological tissue has been a fast developing biomedical multi-wave imaging modality, after its introduction in the mid90s. PAI couples laser excitation to acoustic detection. Especially, in recent years its significant advantages in onco-surgery has attracted much attention due to its ability to detect malignant tissues. Monitoring cancer angiogenesis, assessment of blood oxygen saturation, functional brain imaging, evaluation of cortical blood volume, detection of skin/conjunctival melanoma depth, assessment of met-hemoglobin, investigating tumor hypoxia andcancer lymph node metastases are some of its promising applications. Moreover, as a real-time monitoring strategy, PAI allows intraoperative imaging of micro-metastases and residual islands in onco-surgery. Herein, we provide a brief introduction to biophysics and fundamentals of PAI, potential novel endogenous and exogenous contrast agents, and novel techniques to develop engineered and targeted contrast agents with theranostic applications. We also summarize the clinical trial pipelines for PAI. Furthermore, we discuss the potential obstacles and limitation of PAI theranostic agents for further clinical applications and strategies to overcome these hurdles., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. Multicomponent mixtures of bilayer lipids, thanks to the coexistence of liquid-crystalline phases in their structures, may be used in the development of functional membranes. In such membranes interlayer ordering distributes across membrane lamellae, resulting in long-range alignment of phase-separated domains. In this paper, we explore the dynamics of this phenomenon by laser speckle pattern analysis. We show that cholesterol content decreases the activity, and the rate of the domains size development is related to the change of physical roughness of the multicomponent lipid mixture. Autobiographical memory distortions are a key feature of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this proof-of-concept randomized controlled trial ( N = 43), we evaluated an autobiographical memory flexibility intervention, MemFlex. We aimed to determine whether the mechanism-focused intervention, which aims to improve autobiographical memory processes, may also affect other cognitive predictors of PTSD and potentially reduce PTSD symptoms in Iranian trauma survivors diagnosed with PTSD. Results indicated significant, moderate to large between-groups effect sizes in favor of MemFlex, relative to wait-list control, for the targeted cognitive mechanism of autobiographical memory flexibility and PTSD symptoms. A large, significant effect was also observed on maladaptive posttraumatic cognitions-a strong predictor of PTSD prognosis, which is a key target of high-intensity cognitive therapies for PTSD. In several phenomena in biology and industry, it is required to understand the comprehensive behavior of sedimenting micro-particles in fluids. Here, we use the numerical refocusing feature of digital holographic microscopy (DHM) to investigate the slippage effect on micro-particle sedimentation near a flat wall. DHM provides quantitative phase contrast and three-dimensional (3D) imaging in arbitrary time scales, which suggests it as an elegant approach to investigate various phenomena, including dynamic behavior of colloids. 3D information is obtained by post-processing of the recorded digital holograms. Through analysis of 3D trajectories and velocities of multiple sedimenting micro-particles, we show that proximity to flat walls of higher slip lengths causes faster sedimentation. The effect depends on the ratio of the particle size to (1) the slip length and (2) its distance to the wall. We corroborate our experimental findings by a theoretical model which considers both the proximity and the particle interaction to a wall of different hydrophobicity in the hydrodynamic forces.

Background and Objectives: Individuals with features of borderline personality disorder (BPD) are highly sensitive to social rejection. Working memory (WM) may play a critical role in processing emotional interpersonal information in BPD. Yet, little is known about how emotional WM operations are related to sensitivity to rejection cues and BPD features. Therefore, this study examined relationships among emotional WM operations, rejection sensitivity, and BPD features., Methods: Participants with BPD features (n = 39 with non-suicidal self-injury history; n = 47 without non-suicidal self-injury history) and healthy participants (n = 46) completed an emotional two-back task before and after a social exclusion induction (the Cyberball game)., Results: Results showed that participants with BPD features were slower at discarding faces expressing anger and pain from WM compared to healthy individuals before the social exclusion induction. Participants with BPD features and a history of self-injury were also slower at entering happy faces into WM compared to the other participants. Moreover, across participants, slower WM discarding of angry and pain faces was associated with higher levels of rejection sensitivity. Investigating real-time phenomena in bio-polymers has received much attention because of their increasing demands in polymer substitution. The 3D morphometry of polymer surfaces may be very impactful in such studies. Here, digital holographic microscopy (DHM) is applied for quantitative measurement of the rare morphological changes of UV-A and UV-C exposed nanocomposites during their incubation with excess water. By reconstructing the recorded successive digital holograms, the time evolution of the swelled regions of the samples is derived. Our results clearly show that the higher water swelling of UV-A irradiated starch/kefiran/ZnO may be attributed to its higher hydrophilicity.

The psychological cost on emotional well-being due to the collateral damage brought about by COVID-19 in accessing oncological services for breast cancer diagnosis and treatment has been documented by recent studies in the United Kingdom. The current study set out to examine the effect of delays to scheduled oncology services on emotional and cognitive vulnerability in women with a breast cancer diagnosis in Iran, one of the very first countries to be heavily impacted by COVID-19. One hundred thirty-nine women with a diagnosis of primary breast cancer answered a series of online questionnaires to assess the current state of rumination, worry, and cognitive vulnerability as well as the emotional impact of COVID-19 on their mental health. Results indicated that delays in accessing oncology services significantly increased COVID related emotional vulnerability. Regression analyses revealed that after controlling for the effects of sociodemographic and clinical variables, women's COVID related emotional vulnerability explained higher levels of ruminative response and chronic worry as well as poorer cognitive function. This study is the first in Iran to demonstrate that the effects of COVID-19 on emotional health amongst women affected by breast cancer can exaggerate anxiety and depressive related symptoms increasing risks for clinical levels of these disorders. Reduced ability to retrieve specific autobiographical memories is a well-defined feature of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and science-driven interventions have emerged to improve memory specificity and thereby symptoms. However, research in depressed samples indicates that the ability to flexibly move between retrieval of specific and general memory types (i.e., memory flexibility) may more accurately conceptualize autobiographical memory deficits in emotional disturbance. In this study, we evaluated memory specificity and memory flexibility in Iranian trauma survivors ( N = 63) with and without PTSD relative to community control participants. Trauma-exposed participants had experienced a serious road-traffic accident. Results indicated that individuals with PTSD experienced reduced memory specificity and memory flexibility relative to trauma-exposed participants and community control participants. A small sample size limits the strength of conclusions, although good statistical power was obtained. The central nervous system (CNS) encompasses the brain and spinal cord and is considered the processing center and the most vital part of human body. The central nervous system (CNS) barriers are crucial interfaces between the CNS and the periphery. Among all these biological barriers, the blood-brain barrier (BBB) strongly impede hurdle for drug transport to brain. It is a semi-permeable diffusion barrier against the noxious chemicals and harmful substances present in the blood stream and regulates the nutrients delivery to the brain for its proper functioning. Neurological diseases owing to the existence of the BBB and the blood-spinal cord barrier have been terrible and threatening challenges all over the world and can rarely be directly mediated. In fact, drug delivery to brain remained a challenge in the treatment of neurodegenerative (ND) disorders, for these different approaches have been proposed. Nano-fabricated smart drug delivery systems and implantable drug loaded biomaterials for brain repair are among some of these latest approaches. In current review, modern approaches developed to deal with the challenges associated with transporting drugs to the CNS are included. Recent studies on neural drug discovery and injectable hydrogels provide a potential new treatment option for neurological disorders. Moreover, induced pluripotent stem cells used to model ND diseases are discussed to evaluate drug efficacy. Imaging of cells is a challenging problem as they do not appreciably change the intensity of the illuminating light. Interferometry-based methods to do this task suffer from high sensitivity to environmental vibrations. We introduce scanning diffractometry as a simple non-contact and vibration-immune methodology for quantitative phase imaging. Fresnel diffractometry by a phase step has led to several applications such as high-precision measurements of displacement. Additional scanning may lead to 3D imaging straightforwardly. We apply the technique to acquire 3D images of holographic grating, red blood cell, neuron, and sperm cell. Either visibility of the diffraction fringes or the positions of extrema may be used for phase change detection. The theoretical analysis through the Fresnel diffraction from one-dimensional phase step is presented and the experimental results are validated with digital holographic microscopy. The presented technique can be suggested to serve as a robust device for 3D phase imaging and biomedical measurements.

Scaffold-based bone tissue engineering aims to develop 3D scaffolds that mimic the extracellular matrix to regenerate bone defects and damages. In this paper, we provide a laser speckle analysis to characterize the highly porous scaffold. The experimental procedure includes in situ acquisition of speckle patterns of the bone scaffold at different times under preserved environmental conditions, and follow-up statistical post-processing toward examining its internal activity. The myelin figure (MF) is one of the basic structures of lipids, and the study of their formation and the effect of various parameters on their growth is useful in understanding several biological processes. In this paper, we address the influence of the pH degree of the surrounding medium on MF dynamics. We introduce a tunable shearing digital holographic microscopy arrangement to obtain quantitative and volumetric information about the complex growth of MFs. Objectives This study aimed to identify predictors of positive and negative post-traumatic psychological outcomes within a sample of Iranian cancer survivors. Methods In this cross-sectional research, 300 (167 females; age M = 53.00, SD = 27.57) cancer survivors (breast cancer, leukaemia, colorectal cancer) were recruited from oncology outpatient clinics in Iran. Participants completed measures of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), post-traumatic growth (PTG), cognitive processing, attentional biases, and autobiographical memory specificity. Results Using partial least square structural equation modelling, it was found that the proposed model was capable of predicting PTSD and PTG. Negative attentional biases were significantly associated with PTSD symptoms, but were not significantly associated with PTG. In contrast, memory specificity and positive attentional biases tended to be associated with PTG, but were not significantly associated with PTSD symptoms. Second, negative cognitive processing was significantly associated with PTSD symptoms, while positive cognitive processing was significantly associated with PTG. Finally, there was support for indirect pathways between positive cognitive tendencies and PTG through positive cognitive processing, while there were indirect pathways between negative habitual cognitive tendencies and PTSD symptoms through negative cognitive processing. Conclusions Our findings support growing evidence for differential trajectories to PTG and PTSD symptoms in cancer. Such cognitive factors may be important therapeutic targets in psycho-oncology interventions. Statement of contribution What is already known on this subject? The diagnosis of cancer and its subsequent treatment can result in symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Positive changes and psychosocial growth (post-traumatic growth; PTG) are also common as a result of patients' experience of cancer. What does this study add? This study identified predictors of positive (PTG) and negative trauma (PTSD) outcomes within a sample of Iranian cancer survivors (N = 300). Mueller matrix microscopy (MMM) is a powerful approach to probe microstructural and optical information of many important specimens (e.g., tissue and bacteria), which otherwise cannot be obtained directly from intensity or spectral images. Achieving high lateral resolution in MMM, similar to other microscopy approaches, remains a challenge. Here, we extend the idea of microsphere (MS) -assisted microscopy into MMM toward resolution-enhanced polarimetric imaging. The goal is achieved by insertion of a transparent MS in the working distance of the imaging microscope objective in the optical train of an MMM system. We experimentally show that an MS close to the sample in MMM may increase the resolution beyond the intrinsic diffraction limit of the system by redirecting the higher spatial frequencies of the sample into the acceptance cone. In order to be a case in point, the experiment is conducted on a standard holographic diffraction grating with 1 µm line-width, which is beyond the diffraction limit of a 10× objective. Two-dimensional images of the Mueller matrix and some of the widely used quantitative polarimetric parameters of the sample are calculated and compared in the two cases before and after insertion of MS. The proposed arrangement is easy to implement and has the potential to serve as a high-resolution polarimetric microscope for visualizing the polarization characteristics of the microscopic objects.

Background: Measles is in elimination phase in Iran. Following occurrence of two cases of measles in two children under six years old with the history of measles immunization in one of the villages affiliated to Bahar District, west of Hamadan Province, northwest of Iran, this study was conducted to determine the immunity status of people living in the village affected by the measles outbreak in spring of 2018., Study Design: A cross-sectional (descriptive-analytical) study., Methods: Overall, 272 populations of 0-40 yr old in the village affected by outbreak were enrolled. Multistage sampling was used for choosing participants. The data collection tool was a researcher-made checklist used to collect epidemiological data including demographic characteristics and vaccination status. Blood samples were taken from them and sent to the measles reference laboratory for IgG testing. The amount of optical density (OD) greater than 0.2 was considered as positive and less than 0.1 negative, respectively., Results: The mean age of the study population was 17.4 ±11.8 yr and the sex ratio was almost the same. Levels of antibodies against measles were positive in 63.24%, intermediate in 12.5% ​​and negative in 24.26%. There was no significant difference between the immunity status of the subjects with gender (P=0.236) and age group (P=0.113). Pearson correlation results showed that in males there was a significant positive correlation between the age of the participants and the serum IgG level (r = 0.26, P=0.003)., Conclusion: Measles immunity in communities is not sufficient to prevent outbreaks and small epidemics, and it is recommended that periodically, serological assessments carried out at community level and especially at high-risk groups.

We investigate the sedimentation of colloidal micro-spheres and red blood cells (RBCs) in non-Newtonian fluid - silicone oil with different viscosities. We use digital holographic microscopy (DHM) to obtain volumetric information of the sedimenting micro-objects. Especially, the numerical refocusing feature of DHM is used to extract the depth information of multiple particles moving inside the fluid. The effects of proximity to a flat wall and the non-Newtonian behavior on the sedimenting micro-spheres and RBCs are studied by trajectory analyzing and velocimetry. We observe that for lower viscosity values the proximity effect is more pronounced. The variation rate of the particle falling velocities versus their distance to the flat wall decreases by increasing the viscosity of the fluid. For RBCs, however, the decreasing of the velocity variations have a smoother trend. The experimental results verify the theoretical prediction that, similar to Newtonian case, a correction factor in Stokes' law suffices for describing the wall effect.

This study investigated the influence of culture and depression on (1) emotion priming reactions, (2) the recall of subjective experience of emotion, and (3) emotion meaning. Members of individualistic culture (Australia, n = 42) and collectivistic culture (Iran, n = 32, Malaysia, n = 74) with and without depression completed a biological motion task, subjective experience questionnaire and emotion meaning questionnaire. Those with depression, regardless of cultural group, provided significantly fewer correct responses on the biological motion task than the control group. Second, the collectivistic control groups reported greater social engaging emotion than the Australian control group. However, the three depressed groups did not differ culturally. The Australian depressed group reported significantly greater interpersonally engaging emotion than the Australian control group. Third, the collectivistic groups reported significantly greater social worth, belief changes and sharing of emotion than the individualistic group. Depression did not influence these cultural effects. Instead we found that those with depression, when compared to controls, considered emotions as subjective phenomena, that were qualifying for relationships with others, and associated with greater agency appraisals. The applicability of the biocultural framework of emotion in depression was considered.

Objective: The aim of the current study was to conduct a preliminary investigation into time perception in adolescents with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD), and healthy controls., Method: Iranian adolescents with PTSD (n = 15) or MDD (n = 15) and healthy, non-trauma-exposed control participants (n = 15) completed 3 measures of time perception: a verbal time estimation task, a production task, and a reproduction task., Results: The PTSD group was found to have significantly poorer overall time perception accuracy compared to the control group (d = 1.38). Group differences were dependent on the type of time perception task; the groups did not differ significantly on the time reproduction task but did differ significantly on the verbal time estimation task and production task. The PTSD group had significantly poorer time estimate accuracy (i.e., underestimates) on the verbal estimation task than did the MDD group (d = 1.10), and the control group performed at the intermediate level. The PTSD and MDD groups did not differ significantly on the production task, but both clinical groups had significantly poorer performance than did the control group (ds> .76). Finally, working memory mediated the relationship between group and time perception accuracy (95% confidence interval [2.10, 38.69])., Conclusions: These findings highlight the need for further research examining time perception in PTSD. In this paper, we show that laser speckle analysis (LSA) can provide valuable information about the structure of crumpled thin sheets. Crumpling and folding of slender objects are present in several phenomena and in various ranges of size, e.g., paper compaction, cortical folding in brains, DNA packing in viral capsids, and flower buds, to name a few. The analysis of laser speckles, both numerical and graphical, is a source of information about the activity of biological or non-biological materials, and the development of digital electronics, which brought the ease of image processing, has opened new perspectives for a spectrum of LSA applications. LSA is applied on randomly crumpled and one-, two-, and three-times folded papers, and appreciable differences in LSA parameters are observed. The methodology can be applied for easy-to-implement quantitative assessment of similar phenomena and samples.

Background: The first line treatment for cutaneous leishmaniasis is pentavalent antimony such as sodium stibogluconate (pentostam) and meglumine antimonite (glucantime). One of the most important ways to uptake the drug is by a trans-membrane protein, called aquaglyceroporin encoded by Aquaglyceroprotein1 ( LmAQP1 ). In this study, molecular characterization of LmAQP1 was reported., Methods: Leishmania major (MRHO/IR/75/ER) promastigotes were cultured, and then DNA extraction and RNA extraction were done and followed by cDNA synthesis. Amplicons resulted from PCR and RT-PCR using specific primers were purified and sequenced. Molecular characterization was done by bioinformatically software such as BLST, ClustalW2, and RMSD., Results: Amplicons resulted from PCR and RT-PCR showed equal size in length. BLASTn analysis showed a point nucleotide change in LmAQP1 gene that encoded 282-amino-acid long protein with a mutation at position 154 including replacement of alanine by threonine. The observed mutation in the interested gene was assessed using the above-mentioned software. The mentioned gene was submitted at GenBank, NCBI with accession number of KU514052., Conclusion: The functional prediction of the protein encoded from LmAQP1 showed that the mentioned mutation could not affect the three-dimension structure, but it may modify the drug uptake potential of this important channel. Based on from LmAQP1 role, it seems to be an appropriate candidate for drug development. In this paper, we measure the proximity effect of a flat wall on the sedimentation of colloidal particles by the use of digital holographic microscopy (DHM). DHM provides quantitative phase contrast and three-dimensional (3D) imaging in arbitrary time scales that are suitable to investigate various phenomena, including dynamic behavior of colloids. 3D information is obtained by post-processing of the recorded digital holograms through the angular spectrum propagation approach for numerical reconstruction. We have measured the trajectory and velocity of spherical colloids in various distances from a flat wall while they sediment under gravity. The results are in agreement with theoretical studies of Goldman et al. [Chem. Eng. Sci.22, 637 (1967)CESCAC0009-250910.1016/0009-2509(67)80047-2]. We observed an increase in the drag force due to the proximity to the flat wall, which was effective for distances up to several particle sizes. The presented method is capable of being used for different applications in study of colloidal dynamics where 3D information in real time is required.

The aim of this paper is to introduce digital holographic microscopy (DHM) as a non-contact, inexpensive, and non-abrasive method for 3D surface characterization of polymeric nanocomposites. A common-path and vibration-immune Mirau system with a microsphere-assisted arrangement is utilized to increase the lateral resolution of the images. The characterization is performed through the measurement of roughness parameters of the surfaces, which are derived from the recorded holograms. Pure poly(triazole-amide-imide) (PTAI) and PTAI nanocomposite reinforeced with surface modified TiO 2 nanoparticles (MN-TiO 2 ) are used and compared. Quantitative three-dimensional (3-D) imaging of living cells provides important information about the cell morphology and its time variation. Off-axis, digital holographic interference microscopy is an ideal tool for 3-D imaging, parameter extraction, and classification of living cells. Two-beam digital holographic microscopes, which are usually employed, provide high-quality 3-D images of micro-objects, albeit with lower temporal stability. Common-path digital holographic geometries, in which the reference beam is derived from the object beam, provide higher temporal stability along with high-quality 3-D images. Self-referencing geometry is the simplest of the common-path techniques, in which a portion of the object beam itself acts as the reference, leading to compact setups using fewer optical elements. However, it has reduced field of view, and the reference may contain object information. Here, we describe the development of a common-path digital holographic microscope, employing a shearing plate and converting one of the beams into a separate reference by employing a pin-hole. The setup is as compact as self-referencing geometry, while providing field of view as wide as that of a two-beam microscope. Background: Topiramate is an anticonvulsant drug and an ideal candidate for reducing the craving in people relying on cocaine. Contingency management is one of the common therapies in the domain of addiction., Objective: The present study aimed to evaluate and compare three medication methods of Topiramate (TPM), Contingency Management (CM) and the combined TPM treatment and cash intervention on craving during abstinence., Methods: This randomized clinical trial was conducted at Bijan Center for Substance Abuse Treatment in Tehran, Iran, from December 15, 2014 to November 20, 2015. One hundred males (Age range=18-34; SD=4.11) undergoing abstinence were assigned randomly to four groups (n=25) of Topiramate (TPM), Contingency Management (CM) and the Combined Method plus a placebo control group. Treatment was provided for twelve weeks for the experiment groups, and only the control group received the placebo. Participants in the Cash-based and CM Condition had an identical 12-week escalating schedule of reinforcement (cash-based incentives worth $0, $20, $40, and $80). In this paper, we use a glass microsphere incorporated into a digital holographic microscope to increase the effective resolution of the system, aiming at precise cell identification. A Mirau interferometric objective is employed in the experiments, which can be used for a common-path digital holographic microscopy (DHMicroscopy) arrangement. High-magnification Mirau objectives are expensive and suffer from low working distances, yet the commonly used low-magnification Mirau objectives do not have high lateral resolutions. We show that by placing a glass microsphere within the working distance of a low-magnification Mirau objective, its effective numerical aperture can be increased, leading to super-resolved three-dimensional images. The improvement in the lateral resolution depends on the size and vertical position of microsphere, and by varying these parameters, the lateral resolution and magnification may be adjusted. We used the information from the super-resolution DHMicroscopy to identify thalassemia minor red blood cells (tRBCs). Identification is done by comparing the volumetric measurements with those of healthy RBCs. Our results show that microsphere-assisted super-resolved Mirau DHMicroscopy, being common path and off-axis in nature, has the potential to serve as a benchtop device for cell identification and biomedical measurements.

In the last decade, the transport of intensity has been increasingly used in microscopy, wavefront sensing, and metrology. In this study, we verify by simulation and experiment the use of the transport of intensity equation (TIE) in the accurate testing of optical aspheric surfaces. Guided by simulation results and assuming that the experimental setup parameters and the conic constants are known, one can estimate an appropriate defocusing distance Δz that leads to an accurate solution of the TIE. In this paper, this method is verified through the construction of a non-nulled experiment for testing the 2D profile of an aspheric surface. The theoretical method and experimental results are compared to validate the results. Finally, to validate the TIE methodology, the phase distribution obtained by TIE is compared with the phase distribution obtained by a Shack-Hartmann sensor.

Lateral in-homogeneities in lipid compositions cause microdomains formation and change in the physical properties of biological membranes. With the presence of cholesterol and mixed species of lipids, phospholipid membranes segregate into lateral domains of liquid-ordered and liquid-disordered phases. Coupling of two-dimensional intralayer phase separations and interlayer liquid-crystalline ordering in multicomponent membranes has been previously demonstrated. By the use of digital holographic microscopy (DHMicroscopy), we quantitatively analyzed the volumetric dynamical behavior of such membranes. The specimens are lipid mixtures composed of sphingomyelin, cholesterol, and unsaturated phospholipid, 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine. DHMicroscopy in a transmission mode is an effective tool for quantitative visualization of phase objects. By deriving the associated phase changes, three-dimensional information on the morphology variation of lipid stacks at arbitrary time scales is obtained. Moreover, the thickness distribution of the object at demanded axial planes can be obtained by numerical focusing. Our results show that the volume evolution of lipid domains follows approximately the same universal growth law of previously reported area evolution. However, the thickness of the domains does not alter significantly by time; therefore, the volume evolution is mostly attributed to the changes in area dynamics. These results might be useful in the field of membrane-based functional materials.

Most natural and engineered processes, such as biomolecular reactions, protein folding, and population dynamics, occur far from equilibrium and therefore cannot be treated within the framework of classical equilibrium thermodynamics. Here we experimentally study how some fundamental thermodynamic quantities and relations are affected by the presence of the nonequilibrium fluctuations associated with an active bath. We show in particular that, as the confinement of the particle increases, the stationary probability distribution of a Brownian particle confined within a harmonic potential becomes non-Boltzmann, featuring a transition from a Gaussian distribution to a heavy-tailed distribution. Because of this, nonequilibrium relations (e.g., the Jarzynski equality and Crooks fluctuation theorem) cannot be applied. We show that these relations can be restored by using the effective potential associated with the stationary probability distribution. We corroborate our experimental findings with theoretical arguments.

This study investigated visual false memories in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The Scenic False Memory paradigm (SFM, Hauschildt, Peters, Jelinek, & Moritz, 2012) was administered to male Iranian military personnel who had participated in the Iran-Iraq war and were diagnosed with (n = 21) or without (n = 21) PTSD and a sample of healthy male non-trauma-exposed controls (n = 21). Trauma-exposed participants recalled and recognized a significantly lower percentage of hits and a significantly greater percentage of false memories for both trauma-related and non-trauma-related video scenes, than non-trauma-exposed controls. Among the trauma-exposed participants, those with and without PTSD did not differ significantly in terms of percentage of hits and false memories recalled on the SFM. Those with PTSD were found to recognize significantly fewer hits for both the trauma-related and non-trauma-related videos than those without PTSD. Those with PTSD also recognized significantly more false memories for the trauma video scene than the non-PTSD group. Background: The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy - Breast (FACT-B) scale is widely used to measure health-related quality of life in cancer patients. The aim of the present study is to validate the FACT-B in a sample of Iranian women with breast cancer., Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 300 women selected through non-random convenient sampling procedure from oncology hospitals and clinics in Kermanshah and Shiraz cities. They were asked to fill in the Persian versions of the FACT-B scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer quality of life EORTC QLQ30. Confirmatory factorial analysis of the methods, concurrent validity and discriminant, and Cronbach's alpha for internal consistency were applied., Results: Internal consistency using Cronbach's alpha was 0.63 to 0.93 for the subscales and 0.92 for the total scale. Significant correlations between FACT- B and other measures indicate that this scale had concurrent and discriminant validity. The values of fit indices were satisfactory., Conclusions: The Persian version of the FACT-B scale is valid and reliable and, therefore, the scale can be used in research and clinical settings to assess health-related quality of life in Iranian patients with breast cancer.

Mental adjustment to cancer is known as a psychological, physical, and psychological health variable among cancer patients. The present study examines the factor structure and psychometric properties of the Mini-Mental Adjustment to Cancer scale (Mini-MAC) in a sample of Iranian adults who suffer from cancer. The sample consists of 320 cancer patients selected through non-random convenient sampling procedure from the hospitals and clinics in the cities of Kermanshah and Shiraz in Iran, using the Mini-MAC scale. One hundred of these patients also completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale. Statistical methods used to analyze the data included confirmatory and exploratory factor analysis, discriminate validity, and Cronbach alpha coefficients for internal consistency. Factor analysis confirms five factors in the Mini-MAC. The values of fit indices are within the acceptable range. Significant correlations between the Mini-MAC and other measures also show that this scale has discriminate validity. Alpha coefficients for the subscales are Helplessness/Hopelessness,.94; Cognitive Avoidance.76; Anxious Preoccupation,.90; Fatalism,.77; Fighting Spirit.80; and total scale.84, respectively. The results confirm the five-factor structure of the Persian Mini-MAC scale and also prove that it is a reliable and valid scale. They show that this scale has sufficient power to measure different aspects of mental adjustment in patients with cancer.
