In this work, we report the experimental study of a Q-switched optical fiber laser based on graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) as saturable absorber (SA). GOQDs are fabricated by carbonization and exfoliation electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers. The results of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) showed bands caused by the CHs and C[bond, double bond]O groups associated with the GOQDs. The Raman spectrum showed the typical G and D bands of GOQDs. The size of the GOQDs, calculated by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) was 6 nm; additionally, by high resolution TEM (HRTEM), an interplanar distance of 0.19 nm corresponding to the (002) direction of the graphene oxide was calculated. The SA was achieved using the photodeposition technique of the GOQDs onto the core of a single-mode optical fiber. The nonlinear characterization (NLC) of the GOQDs was carried out using the P-scan technique with a high-gain erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) at a wavelength of 1550 nm. The obtained results showed a saturable absorption behavior with a value of β = - 1.178 x 10 - 6 ( m / W ) and a non-linear susceptibility of I m ( χ ( 3 ) ) ≈ - 1.573 x 10 - 7 ( e s u ) . The experimental results of the SA, based on GOQDs as a switching device in a fiber laser, showed a typical behavior of a Q-switched laser by generating a pulsed emission at a wavelength of 1599 nm, a frequency from 2 to 16 kHz, and a maximum average output power of 1.3 mW., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (© 2023 The Authors.)

The nonlinear optical response of graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) fabricated by the carbonization and exfoliation of electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers is reported. Electrospun and carbonized fibers were characterized by SEM and XPS. SEM micrograph confirmed the formation of PAN fibers of 153.44 ± 6.44 nm, while by XPS the binding energies associated with sp 2 and sp 3 carbon hybridizations were found, after the carbonization process. On the other hand, the GOQDs obtained were characterized by photoluminescence (PL), UV-Vis, Raman spectroscopy, and High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM). The GOQDs size of 10 nm was estimated by HRTEM. Raman spectroscopy showed the D and G bands associated with the sp 2 and sp 3 hybridizations of the GOQDs, by PL two energy values of 2.67 and 2.97 eV were calculated. The UV-Vis spectrum showed two absorption bands confirming the presence of GOQDs. The nonlinear characterization was carried out using the P-scan technique, previously photodepositing GOQDs onto an optical fiber, using a coherent radiation source at a wavelength of 1550 nm. The results obtained showed a saturable absorption behavior with a value of β = - 2.474 × 10 - 4 m / W and a nonlinear susceptibility of χ ( 3 ) ≈ - 7.749 × 10 - 4 ( e s u ) . We performed the investigation of the polarization-sensitive photocurrent generated in silver-palladium metal-semiconductor nanocomposite films under irradiation with nanosecond laser pulses at the wavelength of 2600 nm. It is shown that in both the transverse and the longitudinal configuration, the surface photogalvanic (SPGE) and photon drag effects (PDE) contribute to the observed photocurrent. However, the temporal profile of the transverse photocurrent pulse is monopolar at any polarization and angle of incidence, while the temporal profile of the longitudinal photocurrent pulse depends on the polarization of the excitation beam. Specifically, the irradiation of the film with the s -polarized excitation beam produces a monopolar photoresponse, while at p -polarized excitation, the photoresponse is bipolar, having a short front and long tail. Obtained experimental results are in agreement with the developed phenomenological theory, which describes transverse and longitudinal photocurrents due to SPGE and PDE in terms of relevant second-order nonlinear susceptibilities and allows us to obtain their dependences on the angle of incidence and polarization of the excitation laser beam. The pronounced dependence of the photocurrent on the angle of incidence and polarization of the excitation beam opens avenues toward the development of polarization- and position-sensitive detectors for industrial and space applications.

A series of methacrylic styrylquinoline polymers have been synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic and nonlinear optical (NLO) investigations. The NLO properties of studied polymer compounds in the form of thin films prepared by a spin coating method have been investigated by means of second and third harmonic generation via Maker fringe setup with a laser source at 1064 nm and a pulse duration of 30 ps. The results show strong second harmonic signal dependence on polarization configurations. This second harmonic generation (SHG) response was enhanced by UV-irradiation at 366 nm and doping by ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) (100 nm), while the opposite effect was achieved for a third harmonic generation experiment. Thus, values of second and third order nonlinear susceptibilities were determined by theoretical calculations based on comparative models. The remarkable NLO results presented in this paper expose potential optoelectronic and photonic applications.

Nonlinear-optical response of photorefractive hybrid liquid crystal (LC) cells has been studied by means of dynamic holographic technique in two-wave mixing arrangement. The LC cells include nonuniform silicon substrates comprising a micrometer-range photonic crystal. A thin LC layer is set between silicon substrate and a flat glass substrate covered by a transparent (ITO) electrode. A dynamic diffraction grating was induced in the LC volume by the two-wave mixing of laser beams with simultaneous application of DC electric field to the cell. Theoretical model of Raman-Nath self-diffraction was developed. This model allows for calculation of nonlinear optical characteristics in thin samples on the base of two-wave mixing experimental data, and with taking into account light losses on absorption and/or scattering. The hybrid LC cells demonstrate strong nonlinear optical effect, prospective for many applications in electro-optical microsystems, such as SLMs, as well as in multi-channel systems.

Vibrational sum frequency generation (VSFG) spectroscopy is a widely used probe of interfaces and, having ideal surface sensitivity and selectivity, is particularly powerful when applied to wet and soft interfaces. Although VSFG spectroscopy can sensitively detect molecular details of interfaces, interpretation of observed spectra has, until recently, been challenging and often ambiguous. The situation has been greatly improved by remarkable advances in computational VSFG analysis on the basis of molecular modeling and molecular dynamics simulation. This article reviews the basic idea of computational VSFG analysis and recent applications to both aqueous and organic interfaces.

Nonlinear second harmonic optical activity of graphene covering a gold photon sieve was determined for different polarizations. The photon sieve consists of a subwavelength gold nanohole array placed on glass. It combines the benefits of efficient light trapping and surface plasmon propagation to unravel different elements of graphene second-order susceptibility χ((2)). Those elements efficiently contribute to second harmonic generation. In fact, the graphene-coated photon sieve produces a second harmonic intensity at least two orders of magnitude higher compared with a bare, flat gold layer and an order of magnitude coming from the plasmonic effect of the photon sieve; the remaining enhancement arises from the graphene layer itself. The measured second harmonic generation yield, supplemented by semianalytical computations, provides an original method to constrain the graphene χ((2)) elements. The values obtained are |d31 + d33| ≤ 8.1 × 10(3) pm(2)/V and |d15| ≤ 1.4 × 10(6) pm(2)/V for a second harmonic signal at 780 nm. This original method can be applied to any kind of 2D materials covering such a plasmonic structure.

We present evidence that there is a phase transition, with a diverging static susceptibility, underlying the transformation of a liquid into a glass. The dielectric susceptibility, at frequencies above its characteristic value, shows a power-law tail extending over many decades to higher frequencies. An extrapolation of this behavior to the temperature where the dynamics becomes arrested indicates a diverging susceptibility. We present evidence for analogous behavior in the magnetic susceptibility of a paramagnet approaching the spin-glass transition. The similarity of the response in these two glassy systems suggests that some conventional lore, such as that the spin glass shows evidence for a diverging correlation length only in a nonlinear but not in the linear susceptibility, may be invalid.
