The biogeochemical processes of organic matter exhibit notable variability and unpredictability in marginal seas. In this study, the abiologically and biologically driving effects on particulate organic matter (POM) and dissolved organic matter (DOM) were investigated in the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea of China, by introducing the cutting-edge network inference tool of deep learning. The concentration of particulate organic carbon (POC) was determined to characterize the status of POM, and the fractions and fluorescent properties of DOM were identified through 3D excitation-emission-matrix spectra (3D-EEM) combined parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). The results indicated that the distribution of POM and DOM exhibited regional disparity across the studied sea regions. POM demonstrated greater heterogeneity in the South Yellow Sea (p < 0.05), and in contrast, all three fluorescent components of DOM displayed a higher degree of heterogeneity in the Bohai Sea (p < 0.05). To delve into the drivers of the discrepancy, artificial neural network (ANN) models were constructed, incorporating 15 extra abiotic and biotic parameters. Under optimal parameter setting, ANNs achieved a maximum Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) of 0.87 and a minimum Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) of 0.23. The model identified turbidity and temperature as the most influential factors, accounting for the variation in the heterogeneity of POM and DOM across different sea regions, respectively. Additionally, the result highlighted the significant role of pico-size photosynthetic organisms among biological predictors, which may suggest their pivotal, yet often underappreciated, role in blue carbon cycles. The Jiaozhou Bay (JZB) intertidal zone is a significant carbon reservoir that plays a crucial role in transporting and accumulating organic matter; however, quantitative studies of organic matter sources are scarce. In this study, we present bulk parameters of total organic carbon (TOC), TOC/TN, δ 13 C, and biomarker contents in 36 surface sediment samples from the JZB intertidal zones to quantify the contribution of organic carbon (OC) derived from terrestrial/marine sources, such as C 3 plants, C 4 plants, estuarine productivity, sewage outlets, and marine productivity. The results demonstrated that a two-end-member model based on the traditional indicators of TOC/TN or δ 13 C is not appropriate for quantifying the OC source. The presence of C 3 plants, C 4 plants, and sewage outlets in the JZB intertidal zone could lead to errors in determining OC contribution when solely using TOC/TN or δ 13 C. A classical mixing diagram (three-end-member model) utilizing TOC/TN and δ 13 C values revealed that OC contribution was dominated by marine productivity throughout the intertidal zone. In the west, the average OC contribution from marine productivity, estuarine productivity, and C 4 plants was 73.8 %, 14.2 %, and 12.0 %, respectively. In the east, the average OC contribution from marine productivity, estuarine productivity, and sewage outlets was 57.6 %, 24.9 %, and 17.4 %, respectively. The higher OC contribution from marine productivity in the west was attributed to the occurrence of Spartina alterniflora, while the OC contribution from estuarine productivity in the east was primarily due to the presence of more rivers flowing into the JZB compared to the west. By combining biomarkers and OC contents, a significant positive relationship verified the suitability of the end-member values selected for the three-end-member mixing model in the west and east intertidal zones of JZB. This finding was further supported by principal component analysis (PCA) analyses of these proxies. Carbonaceous aerosols primarily comprise organic carbon (OC) and black carbon (BC). Thermal-optical analysis (TOA) is the most commonly used method for separating carbonaceous aerosols into OC and EC (BC is referred to as elemental carbon EC, in this method). Advances in hardware design and algorithms have expanded the capabilities of TOA beyond just distinguishing OC and EC. However, a comprehensive understanding of the enhanced functionality of TOA is still lacking. This study provides the first comprehensive review of the TOA technique, highlighting expanded capabilities to measure brown carbon (BrC), mass-absorption efficiency, absorption enhancement, source contributions, and refined OC/EC split points. This review discusses the principles, advantages, and limitations of these advancements. Furthermore, the TOA system anticipates further advancements through integration with other instruments, establishing correlations between EC values obtained from different TOA instruments/protocols, correlating between BrC measurements from TOA and non-TOA methods, and developing an algorithm to quantify BrC from progressive absorption Ångström exponent (AAE) values. This study (June 2022-July 2023) investigates the atmospheric concentrations of carbonaceous species, including organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC), in PM 2.5 in two major cities in Kazakhstan. Samples were collected from two sites in Almaty (Seifullin and KazNU) and one in Astana. The results showed that Almaty had significantly higher annual average concentrations of OC (10.8 and 10.5 μg/m 3 ) and EC (1.68 and 1.87 μg/m 3 ) compared to Astana (OC: 7.1 μg/m 3 , EC: 0.61 μg/m 3 ). Both cities exhibited pronounced seasonal variations, with significantly elevated concentrations (1.5-3.4 times for OC, 2.1-4.8 times for EC) during the heating season compared to the non-heating season. This indicates a significant influence of coal and biomass combustion for heating on carbonaceous aerosol concentrations. Both cities' OC/EC ratios varied widely (2.6-39.4), showing strong positive correlations (0.61-0.94) across all seasons except summer, suggesting a common primary emission source. Primary organic carbon dominated OC levels in winter (71-74%), whereas secondary organic carbon contributed significantly to OC concentrations in summer (43-50%). Higher OC-EC concentrations correlated with lower atmospheric visibility values. Comparing the atmospheric deposition chemistry between above and below the planetary boundary layer (PBL) may help understand the impacts from inter-regional air pollutant transport and local emissions to air pollutant deposition. In this study, we monitored ions, soluble and insoluble potentially toxic elements (PTEs), and dissolved organic nitrogen and carbon at the base (M-base: 551 m asl), middle (M-middle: 2400 m asl), and summit (M-summit: 3077 m asl) on Mount Emei. The annual volume-weighted mean (VWM) concentrations of all measured components were substantially higher at M-base than at M-summit, except for Na + , Cl - , and NO 2 - as Na + and Cl - at M-summit may be largely from ocean and NO 2 transformation may be faster at M-base. Not all components had their highest annual deposition fluxes at M-base mainly due to the differences in precipitation. Organic nitrogen and organic carbon accounted for 19 %-26 % and 63 %-71 % of the annual total dissolved nitrogen and carbon at the three sites, respectively. The contributions of soluble and insoluble fractions showed a large variability among the nine PTEs measured (3 %-75 % and 97 %-25 %, respectively) but they were similar among the three sites, as the PETs' solubility largely depended on pH. From low to high elevations, the contributions to the air pollutant deposition fluxes within and outside the SCB decreased and increased, respectively. Even south and southeast Asia were important source regions for some pollutants at M-summit. The presence of aquatic biopolymeric organic carbon of high (> 10 - 20 kDa) molecular weight (high-MW OC) in drinking water produced from surface water affects its biological stability which may cause regrowth in disinfectant-free distribution. This study compares two analytical methods for determining the concentration of aquatic high-MW OC, namely LC-OCD (liquid chromatography - organic carbon detection) and PHMOC (particulate and colloidal high-molecular weight OC). LC-OCD entails prefiltration of the water sample, chromatographical separation of the relevant biopolymer (BP) OC-fraction, and in-line OC detection. PHMOC is based on the total OC content of the concentrate obtained after 30 kDa crossflow ultrafiltration of the water sample. LC-OCD BP and PHMOC showed a good linear correlation (R 2 0.87) for a suite of treated surface water matrices (except raw water) in the 10 - 200 µg/L concentration range, with PHMOC values being 10% - 30% higher than the corresponding LC-OCD BP value, without a clear impact of other water matrix constituents. The indicative yields and selectivities of both methods for indigenous high-MW OC obtained from the PHMOC concentrate were high (≥ 70% - 88%) but not fully complete, which may explain the observed higher PHMOC values and scatter in the PHMOC - LC-OCD BP correlation. LC-OCD BP and PHMOC displayed similar values and trends across the different seasons and treatment stages, with treated ground water and infiltrated water having the lowest (< 10 µg/L) values. Regrowth (as Aeromonas) levels in disinfectant-free distribution networks corresponded with the high-MW OC concentration in the treated drinking water. Overall, the two methods equivalently quantify the concentration of aquatic high-MW OC. Both methods are suitable for use in biological stability studies. Plant litter is a well-defined pool of organic matter (OM) in which the influence of manganese (Mn) on decomposition (both decomposition rate and the mix of compounds ultimately transferred to soil OM) has been clearly demonstrated in temperate forests. However, no similar study exists on grasslands and the effect of foliar Mn versus soil-derived Mn on litter decomposition is poorly known. We used a 5-month and 12-month field, and 10-month laboratory experiments to evaluate litter decomposition on the Kohala rainfall gradient (Island of Hawai'i) in areas with different foliar and soil Mn abundances, and on which a single plant species (Pennisetum clandestinum) dominates primary production and the litter pool. The chemical imaging analyses of decomposed litter revealed that Mn 2+ oxidized to Mn 3+ and Mn 4+ on grass litter during decompositions-hallmarks of Mn-driven litter oxidation. However, these transformations and Mn abundance did not predict greater litter mass loss through decomposition. Iron (Fe) oxides in wetland soils are crucial for stabilizing soil organic carbon (SOC) by forming stable Fe-OC complexes, thus protecting SOC from microbial breakdown and aiding its preservation. This study delves into the response of Fe (hydr-)oxides to salt stress, a relatively unexplored area, by examining Kandelia obovata, a key mangrove species. Through controlled climate chamber experiments, we investigated how salt stress affects the interactions between Fe (hydr-)oxides and SOC in root exudates (REs) and rhizosphere soils. Our results demonstrate that salinity at 30 ppt significantly increases the release of sugars, amino acids, inorganic nutrients (NH 4 + , NO 3 - ), and phosphorus in K. obovata's REs, while reducing crystalline and amorphous Fe (hydr-)oxides and increasing complexed Fe (hydr-)oxide levels, thereby reducing their crystallinity in rhizosphere soils. Importantly, at elevated salinity (30 ppt), the Fe-OC bond in the rhizosphere shows greater stability, indicating enhanced resilience to salt stress compared to bulk soil. Salt stress also raises the carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio in REs. Testing artificial REs (AREs) with different C/N ratios showed that Fe (hydr-)oxide content decreases at C/N ratios of 10 and 30 compared to the control, whereas Fe-OC content increases with higher C/N ratios. Introduction of AREs with a C/N ratio of 20 significantly affected rhizosphere crystalline Fe (hydr-)oxide and Fe-OC content, highlighting AREs' impact on the binding of Fe (hydr-) oxides and OC. The presence of soil microorganisms was critical for the binding of Fe (hydr-) oxides and OC, as sterilized soil exhibited significantly lower levels of Fe (hydr-) oxides and Fe-OC compared to unsterilized soil. Grassland is an important component of terrestrial ecosystems and plays a crucial role in the global carbon cycle. PhytOC (phytolith-occluded organic carbon) is an extremely important long-term and stable carbon pool in terrestrial ecosystems. Southwest China karst soil exhibits obvious characteristics of alkalinity, high silicon content, and rich calcium, which can significantly influence the characteristics and mechanisms of PhytOC sequestration in vegetation. To elucidate the sequestration characteristics and mechanisms of PhytOC in the karst grasslands, three typical karst grasslands of tropical shrub tussock (TST), warm-temperate shrub tussock (WST), and mountain meadow (MM) from Guizhou province of southwest China were studied. The following results and conclusions were obtained that: 1) the range of PhytOC content of aboveground plant parts, underground roots, and soil in the karst grasslands was 4.03-16.54 g·kg -1 , 10.67-33.92 g·kg -1 , and 0.63-1.89 g·kg -1 , respectively. The underground roots are an important site for phytolith carbon sequestration in grassland ecosystems, and the PhytOC content of underground roots may be higher than that of the aboveground parts. 2) The PhytOC sequestration rate of vegetation was 7.34-15.93 kg·ha -1 ·yr -1 , and the annual sequestration amount of PhytOC of the whole grasslands in southwest China could reach 0.48 × 10 3 -1.48 × 10 3  t CO 2 . Compared to grasslands in non-karst regions of China, karst grasslands in southwest China have a higher sequestration rate of PhytOC in vegetation and a greater capacity for phytolith carbon sequestration. 3) Soil available silicon, pH, and stoichiometric characteristics of C, N and P nutrients significantly affected the phytolith carbon sequestration of vegetation and the soil accumulation of PhytOC in the karst grasslands. Ambient PM 2.5 pollution poses a major risk to public health in China, contributing to significant mortality and morbidity. While overall PM 2.5 concentrations have declined in recent years, the changes in PM 2.5 chemical constituents remain inadequately understood due to limited ground monitoring networks. We developed a Super Learner model that integrates MISR satellite data, chemistry transport model simulations, and land use information to predict daily OC concentrations across China from 2003 to 2019 at a 10-km spatial resolution. The model achieved high predictive accuracy with a cross-validation R 2 of 0.84 and an RMSE of 4.9 μg/m 3 . Our findings show elevated OC levels in Northern China, driven by industrial activities with concentrations exceeding 30 μg/m 3 during the heating season. In contrast, forest fires were the primary contributors in Yunnan, raising OC concentrations to 20-30 μg/m 3 during fire seasons. Over the 17-year period, the national OC trend declined by 1.3 % annually. Regionally, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the Fenwei Plain experienced faster reductions at annual rates of 1.5 % and 2.0 %, respectively, while Yunnan exhibited no significant trends. To better understand pollution source contributions, we analyzed the OC/EC ratio, which indicated higher ratios in less populated rural areas, suggesting agricultural and biogenic emissions, while lower ratios in urban clusters pointed to primary sources such as traffic and industrial activities. Notably, since 2013, significant decreases in the OC/EC ratio have been observed in the North China Plain, likely reflecting the impact of stringent air pollution control policies on biomass burning. Climate change affects more than elsewhere the northern circumpolar permafrost region. This zone comprises large rivers flowing mainly to the Arctic Ocean, delivering about 10 % of the global riverine water flux. These pan-Arctic Rivers drive the dynamics of northern organic carbon (OC) and mercury (Hg) cycling. Permafrost degradation may release substantial amounts of OC and Hg, with potential regional and global impacts. In this review, we summarise the main findings in the last three decades about the role of the pan-Arctic Rivers in OC and Hg cycling and the effect of climate change on these dynamics. Total DOC and POC fluxes delivered by the pan-Arctic rivers presently reach 34.4 ± 1.2 TgC·yr -1 and 7.9 ± 0.5 TgC·yr -1 , while the export of Hg reaches 38.9 ± 1.7 Mg·yr -1 . This review highlights future challenges for the scientific community in evaluating spatial and temporal dynamics of the processes involved in OC and Hg cycling in permafrost-affected areas. Permafrost thawing could lead to greater fluxes of OC and Hg with ill-known resulting risks for food chains. Within this context, efforts should be made to study OC effects on Hg methylation. In recent years, mangrove restoration has gained significant attention due to its carbon storage capacity, role as a pollution sink, and ecological and economic benefits. Moreover, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals' strategies include mangrove restoration. This review investigates the status of mangrove restoration research and the influence of restoration on trace metal accumulation, speciation, and associated risks in mangrove sediments. Our analysis reveals that research on mangrove restoration is increasing globally, with a notable surge in publications after 2017. However, fewer than 25 articles published between 2007 and 2024 address trace metals in restored mangroves, indicating limited focus from researchers on this topic. Research shows that mangrove restoration can quickly alter sediment properties, such as texture, salinity, and pH. As a result, restored sediments tend to accumulate higher organic carbon content than barren areas. Most studies also suggest that trace metal accumulation is higher in restored sites than in non-restored areas. However, metal speciation varies considerably between sites due to local environmental factors. Furthermore, many studies suggest that restoration may increase the risks posed by trace metals to aquatic biota. The challenges of mangrove restoration research include short study timeframes, low success rates, poorly defined targets, small-scale efforts, conflicts with local communities over resources and benefits, insufficient government funding, and a lack of historical data on community health and pollution status.

Soot particles, coming from the incomplete combustion of fossil or biomass fuels, feature a core-shell structure with inner elemental carbon (EC) and outer organic carbon (OC). Both EC and OC are known to be photoactive under solar radiation. However, research on their coupling effect during photochemical aging remains limited. This study examines how the optical properties and oxidative potential (OP) of wood, coal, and diesel soot particles with varying EC and OC levels are affected by exposure to visible light. Wood soot, which has the highest OC content, showed the most significant changes in both optical properties and OP, indicating its highest sensitivity to visible light aging. Molecular composition analysis revealed that the reduction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and methyl-PAHs primarily affects the optical properties, while oxygenated PAHs play a major role in OP. Combined with the results from reactive oxygen species detection, it is suggested that EC initiates photoreactions by generating superoxide anions, while OC undergoes compositional changes that result in subsequent atmospheric effects. These findings enhance our understanding of the photochemical aging process of soot particles and their implications for climate and health.

For four decades, cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) has invaded salt marshes in the Yellow Sea, altering physical, biogeochemical, and biological processes. Here, we investigated the ecological effects of S. alterniflora invasion on benthic environments compared to native halophytes. S. alterniflora contributed to higher carbon accumulation rates compared with bare tidal flat in sediments (3.4 times), through greater primary production and root biomass, compared to Suaeda japonica (2.5 times) and Phragmites australis (2.4 times) over the given period. The results showed that S. alterniflora eradication treatments inhibited its growth but did not significantly affect the benthic communities. Compared to P. australis and bare tidal flats, S. alterniflora invasion resulted in lower greenhouse gas emission and higher contributions to macrobenthos nutrition, and increased sediment stability and carbon burial. While nitrogen (N) deposition and over-fertilization enrich N in soil, it is unclear how it impacts soil organic carbon (SOC) transformation at the aggregate scale. Herein, a 90-day study reveals the transformation mechanisms of SOC in soil aggregates under nitrate and ammonium enrichment conditions. Results showed that nitrate treatment (NT) and ammonium treatment (AT) significantly increased SOC content by 15.6 % and 18.9 %, respectively. In addition, NT increased SOC accrual in large macro-aggregates (LMA), while AT increased SOC accrual in small macro-aggregates (SMA) and micro-aggregates (MA). Further analysis of pyrolysis products showed that N enrichment drove the transformation of labile soil organic matter (SOM) composition into recalcitrant SOM, with polysaccharides declining from 19-30 % to 2-13 %, while lipids rose from 18-27 % to 33-45 %. LMA and SMA contained more aromatic compounds than MA. This is linked to the inhibition of the expression of C degradation function genes, while almost all genes encoding SOC degradation are down-regulated under N enrichment. In the meantime, NT increased the abundance of genes encoding the degradation of N-containing compounds in LMA. Moreover, NO 3 - enrichment exerted a higher inhibitory effect on labile SOC degradation while NH 4 + enrichment substantially inhibited recalcitrant SOC. Finally, Random Forest analysis confirmed that N enrichment elevated the importance of N-containing compounds' metabolism, which diminished when the size of soil aggregates decreased. In contrast, the importance of genes encoding saccharides and cellulose metabolism increased in smaller aggregates. The application of manure and earthworms are frequently used in fertilization practices to improve C, N, and P cycling in soil, which may be adversely affected by roxarsone (ROX), as an organoarsenical pollutant. To effectively address this issue, in this work, the interactive impacts of ROX and earthworm Eisenia foetida on the aggregate formation, input of organic carbon (OC), and changes in the available N and P following 56-day cultivation were systematically investigated. Compared to the control, earthworms increased the mean weight diameter (MWD) of the soil aggregates from 0.6 to 1.1 mm. Thereby, they activated soil enzymes including catalase (CAT), sucrase (SC), urease (UE), and neutral phosphatase (NP), with the soil's pH decreased to 7.1. Consequently, the values of OC, soluble nitrite (NO 3 -N), and Olsen-P content were respectively increased by 0.78-, 1.69-, and 0.87- folds in the E treatment (14.3 vs. 25.5 g/kg, 12.8 vs. 33.3 mg/kg, and 7.8 vs. 14.6 mg/kg). Although the changes in the R treatment were slight, ROX reduced the earthworm-mediated improvements of soil fertility during the application of the RE treatment compared to the E treatment, i.e., the values of MWD, OC, NO 3 -N, and Olsen-P were reduced to 0.9 mm, 20.4 g/kg, 25.4 mg/kg, and 11.6 mg/kg, respectively. From the well-fitted structural equation models, it was demonstrated that earthworms enhanced the aggregate formation and nutrient cycling of OC, NO 3 -N, and Olsen-P, which were inhibited by ROX. Overall, these adverse effects can be offset by earthworm addition, which can play the dual role of monitor and driver for the soil properties. Understanding the fate of terrestrial organic carbon (terrOC) preservation in the marine environments is critical for deciphering the biogeochemical processes associated with the global carbon cycle and the Earth's climate change. The mechanisms controlling terrOC preservation are not completely understood, while lateral oxygen exposure time (OET) is considered as a critical controlling factor. Here, we first utilized molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the structural properties of lignin under anoxic, suboxic, and oxic conditions for understanding the mechanisms of terrOC preservation during sediment lateral transport in the ocean. Our finding suggested that oxygen exposure was indispensable for terrOC degradation through influencing the structural stability and reactivity of lignin. Our simulated results showed that in suboxic environments, prolonged OET may enhance terrOC preservation. Our organic geochemical results suggested that terrOC preferably preserved in coarse silts (20-63 μm) than fine silts (<20 μm) in suboxic environments, largely due to hydrodynamics-driven prolonged OET in coarse sediments, which may efficiently reduce CO 2 emissions. Overall, our study sheds new light on the mechanisms of lateral OETs on terrOC preservation in suboxic conditions and, from a unique molecular structural perspective, provides insights into the impact of prolonged OETs on terrOC oxidative degradation in the marine environment.

Latin American (LatAm) cities are grappling with elevated levels of gaseous and particulate pollutants, which are having detrimental effects on both the local ecosystem and human health. Of particular concern are aerosols with smaller diameters (lower or equal to 2.5 μm, PM2.5), known for their ability to penetrate deep into the respiratory system. While measurements in the region are increasing, they remain limited. This study addresses this gap by presenting the results of a comprehensive, year-long PM2.5 monitoring campaign conducted in six LatAm cities: Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Medellín, San José, Quito and Ciudad de México. Despite all six monitoring sites being urban, they exhibited significant variations in PM2.5 levels, as well as in the content and seasonal behavior of elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC). Estimations of secondary organic carbon (SOC) using the EC-tracer method revealed a notable SOC relevance across all cities: secondary organic aerosols (SOA) accounted in average for between 19 % to 48 % of the total carbonaceous matter. Source attribution, conducted through the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model, highlights substantial contributions from gasoline and diesel traffic emissions (29 % to 49 % of total carbon, TC), regional biomass burning (21 % to 27 %), and SOA (20 % to 38 %) in all cities, with similar chemical signatures. Additionally, industrial emissions were significant in two cities (Medellín and San José), while two others experienced minor impacts from construction machinery at nearby sites (Buenos Aires and Quito). This comparative analysis underscores the importance of considering not only the thermal optical EC/OC fractions as tracers of sources but also the OC/EC ratio of the PMF factors. This dual approach not only adds depth to the research but also suggests varied methodologies for addressing this crucial environmental concern. The concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) is a crucial climate parameter as it has far-reaching implications on global temperature. The oceans are a significant sink for CO 2 . Biologically mediated carbon sequestration, in the form of both inorganic (CaCO 3 ) and organic carbon (C org ), and its subsequent burial in marine sediments play a vital role in regulating atmospheric CO 2 . Understanding the distribution of carbon in marine sediments under different environments can help predict the fate of excess CO 2 in the future. We studied the factors affecting the basin scale variation in carbon burial in the climatically sensitive northeast Indian Ocean, by using the data [CaCO 3 , C org , C org /Nitrogen, and isotopic ratio (δ 13 C, δ 15 N) of organic carbon] from a total of 718 surface sediments. The entire continental shelf and slope contain <10 % CaCO 3 . The highest CaCO 3 is in the deepest parts of the central northeast Indian Ocean, away from the mouth of major river systems. Despite of the high productivity, the low C org on the continental shelf is attributed to the well-oxygenated coarse-grained sediments. The lowest C org is found in the well-oxygenated deeper central northeast Indian Ocean. Interestingly, the highest total carbon is in the deeper central and equatorial regions, far away from the highly productive marginal marine regions. Thawing permafrost forms "thaw ponds" that accumulate and transport organic carbon (OC), redox-active iron (Fe), and other elements. Although Fe has been shown to act as a control on the microbial degradation of OC in permafrost soils, the role of iron in carbon cycling in thaw ponds remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated Fe-OC interactions in thaw ponds in partially and fully thawed soils ("bog" and "fen" thaw ponds, respectively) in a permafrost peatland complex in Abisko, Sweden, using size separation (large particulate fraction (LPF), small particulate fraction (SPF), and dissolved fraction (DF)), acid extractions, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The bulk total Fe (total suspended Fe) in the bogs ranged from 135 mg/L (mean = 13 mg/L) whereas the fens exhibited higher total Fe (1.5 to 212 mg/L, mean = 30 mg/L). The concentration of bulk total OC (TOC) in the bog thaw ponds ranged from 50 to 352 mg/L (mean = 170 mg/L), higher than the TOC concentration in the fen thaw ponds (8.5 to 268 mg/L, mean = 17 mg/L). The concentration of 1 M HCl-extractable Fe in the bog ponds was slightly lower than that in the fens (93 ± 1.2 and 137 ± 3.5 mg/L Fe, respectively) with Fe predominantly (>75 %) in the DF in both thaw stages. Fe K-edge XAS analysis showed that while Fe(II) was the predominant species in LPF, Fe(III) was more abundant in the DF, indicating that the stage of thawing and particle size may control Fe redox state. Furthermore, Fe(II) and Fe(III) were partially complexed with natural organic matter (NOM, 8 to 80 %) in both thaw ponds. Land degradation is accelerating in the Himalayan ecosystem, resulting in the loss of soil nutrients due to severe erosion. Soil erosion presents a significant environmental challenge, resulting in both on-site and off-site consequences, such as reduced soil productivity and siltation in reservoirs. Soil erodibility (K factor), an inherent soil property, determines the susceptibility of soils to erosion. Sampling across hilly and mountainous terrain pose challenges due to its complex landscape. Despite these challenges, it is essential to study K factor variations in different land use/land cover types to comprehend the threat of erosion. Digital soil mapping offers an opportunity to overcome this limitation by providing spatial predictions of soil properties. The objective of our study is to map the spatial distribution of soil erodibility using the Random Forest (RF) model, a machine learning method based on sampled in situ soil data and environmental covariates. We collected 556 surface soil samples from the mountainous catchment (Tehri dam catchment) using the stratified random sampling approach. The model performed satisfactorily in both training (r 2  = 0.91; RMSE = 0.00185) and testing (r 2  = 0.45; RMSE = 0.00318) phases. Subsequently, we generated a digital map with a resolution of 12.5 m to depict the distribution of the K factor. Our analysis revealed that key environmental variables influencing the prediction of the K factor included geology, mean NDVI, and climatic factors. The average K factor value was estimated at 0.0304 and ranging from 0.0251 to 0.0400 t ha h ha -1  MJ -1  mm -1 . A higher K factor was observed in the barren land (0.0344) primarily located in the higher and trans-Himalayan region of seasonally snow-covered areas. These areas typically feature young soils with weak soil formation and unstable soil aggregates. Subsequently cropland/cultivated soils (0.0307) exhibited higher K factor values due to the breakdown of soil aggregates by ploughing activities and exposing carbon to decomposition. The average K factor value of evergreen (0.0294) and deciduous (0.0295) forests were the lowest compared to other land use/land cover types indicating the role of forests in resisting soil erosion. Understanding the relationship between suspended particulate matter (SPM), sediment organic C, N stable isotopes, and lake trophic state index (TSI) is essential for managing lake pollution and eutrophication. According to the δ 13 C, δ 15 N, and C/N we found that the organic C in SPM and sediment of Caohai Lake primarily originated from macrophytes, while N was sourced from chemical fertilizers, phytoplankton, and aquatic plants. Total nitrogen, total phosphorus, NO3 - -N, oxidation reduction potential, and Chl.a were identified as key factors influencing the sources and variations of SPM and sediment organic C and N stable isotopes in Caohai Lake, with a significant linear correlation observed between C, N stable isotopes, and TSI in sediments. Investigating carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) contents and ecological stoichiometric characteristics in leaf litter from tropical rainforests is crucial for elucidating nutrient cycling and energy flow in forest ecosystems. In this study, a 60-ha tropical montane rainforest dynamic monitoring plot in Jianfengling, was selected as the research site and 60 subplots were selected for detailed study. Leaf litter was collected monthly throughout 2016, branches of similar height were placed atthe four corners of each sample square to support a nylon cloth (1 m× 1 m) with 1 mm apertures. The collected plant leaves were sorted,placed into envelopes, labelled, and transported to the laboratory and samples from various plant species were identified, resulting in a total of 107 samples collected and analyzed. For the 31 dominant species, the leaf litter had C, N and P contents of 312.71 ± 28.42, 4.95 ± 0.46 and 0.40 ± 0.03 g/kg, respectively. The C:N, C:P and N:P ratios were 63.61 ± 7.50, 790.91 ± 82.30 and 12.49 ± 1.00, respectively, indicating moderate variability. The C, N and P contents exhibited greater variability among the plant groups, indicating significant heterogeneity among the samples. In contrast, the data from the subplots exhibited less variability, highlighting significant homogeneity. Overall, the mean carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus contents in the leaf litter from tropical montane rainforests were lower than those observed at national and global scales. The N:P ratios in leaf litter below 14 indicated that nitrogen limited litter decomposition in Jianfengling. However, no significant correlations were observed between the C, N and P contents and their stoichiometric ratios in leaf litter and those in soil. Atmospheric deposition provides a stable iron source for peatlands. The influences of Fe input on methane (CH 4 ) productions and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We conducted a microcosm experiment with peat sediments collected from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau of China to explore the effects of ferrihydrite reductionfor CH 4 productions in peatlands by using geochemical analyses including 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy (3D-EEM) in combination with high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA and real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR (qPCR). Results showed that ferrihydrite reduction significantly increased CH 4 production, being 30 times of that under the control. Selective extractions for iron oxides and 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy measurements revealed that no crystalline secondary iron minerals were formed during the ferrihydrite reduction process. The addition of ferrihydrite enhanced the degradation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in peat soil, resulting in a reduction in the concentration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Furthermore, the relative abundance of typical fermentative microorganisms in peat sediments, including Acidobacteriota and Bacteroidota, significantly increased. Such a result indicated that reduction of ferrihydrite accelerated organic matter decomposition and increased substrate concentration required for methanogenesis. Furthermore, a co-increase in relative abundance of Geobacter , Geothrix , and Methanobacterium in the ferrihydrite-amended group suggested a potential synergistic interaction that may promote the CH 4 production. Our results demonstrated that ferrihydrite reduction could significantly enhance CH 4 production and play a vital role in regulating CH 4 emissions in peatlands.

Four hundred and sixty-six references with 625 data reports were included in our study. The high frequency of ratio OC/EC for PM 0.1 was observed in 3.92-5.93; PM 1 in 1.08-3.08; PM 2.5 , 2.08-4.08; PM 10 in 2.70-4.70 and TSP in 2.66-4.66. The rank order of areas based on the pooled concentration of OC bound to PM 2.5 was traffic (17.893 µg/m 3 ) > industrial (10.58 µg/m 3 ) > urban (7.696 µg/m 3 ) > rural (4.08 µg/m 3 ). The rank order of areas based on the pooled (mean) concentration of EC in PM 2.5 was traffic (17.893 µg/m 3 ) > industrial (2.65 µg/m 3 ) > Urban (1.48 µg/m 3 ) > rural (1.06 µg/m 3 ). The pooled concentrations of OC and EC bound to PM 2.5 in traffic areas were higher than in other areas. Therefore, it is recommended that monitoring and effectively reducing concentration plans are carried out, especially in traffic areas.

Background: Epidemiological evidence on the association between wildfire-specific fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) and its carbonaceous components with perinatal outcomes is limited. We aimed to examine the short-term effects of wildfire-specific PM 2.5 and its carbonaceous components on perinatal outcomes., Methods: A multicentre cohort of 9743 singleton births during the wildfire seasons from 1 September 2009 to 31 December 2015 across six cities in New South Wales, Australia were linked with daily wildfire-specific PM 2.5 and carbonaceous components (organic carbon and black carbon). Adjusted distributed lag Cox regression models with spatial clustering were performed to estimate daily and cumulative adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) during the last four gestational weeks for preterm birth, stillbirth, nonvertex presentation, low 5-min Apgar score, special care nursery/neonatal intensive care unit (SCN/NICU) admission, and caesarean section., Results: Daily aHRs per 10 µg/m 3 PM 2.5 showed nearly inverted 'U'-shaped positive associations and daily cumulative aHRs that increased with increasing duration of the exposures. The aHRs for lag 0-6 days were 1.17 (95 % CI: 1.04, 1.32) for preterm birth, 1.40 (95 % CI: 1.11, 1.78) for stillbirth, 1.20 (95 % CI: 1.08, 1.33) for nonvertex presentation, 1.12 (95 % CI: 0.93, 1.35) for low 5-min Apgar score, 0.99 (95 % CI: 0.83, 1.19) for SNC/NICU admission, and 1.01 (95 % CI: 0.94, 1.08) for caesarean section. Organic carbon and black carbon components for lag 0-6 days showed positive associations. The highest component-specific aHRs were 1.09 (95 % CI: 1.03, 1.15) and 4.57 (95 % CI: 1.96, 10.68) for stillbirth per 1 µg/m 3 organic carbon and black carbon, respectively. Biodegradable film mulching has attracted considerable attention as an alternative to conventional plastic film mulching. However, biodegradable films generate transitory microplastics during the film degradation. How much of this transitory microplastics is being formed and their impact on soil health during long-term use of biodegradable plastic film are not known. Here, we quantified the amounts of microplastics (0.1-5 mm in size) in the topsoil (0-20 cm) of two cotton fields with different mulching cultivations: (1) continuous use of conventional (polyethylene, PE) film for 23 years (Plot 1), and (2) 15 years use of conventional film followed by 8 years of biodegradable (polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate, PBAT) film (Plot 2). We further assessed the impacts of the microplastics on selected soil health parameters, with a focus on soil carbon contents and fluxes. The total amount of microplastics was larger in Plot 2 (8507 particles kg -1 ) than in Plot 1 (6767 particles kg -1 ). The microplastics (0.1-1 mm) were identified as derived from PBAT and PE in Plot 2; while in Plot 1, the microplastics were identified as PE. Microplastics > 1 mm were exclusively identified as PE in both plots. Soil organic carbon was higher (27 vs. 30 g C kg -1 soil) but dissolved organic carbon (120 vs. 74 mg C kg -1 soil) and microbial biomass carbon were lower (413 vs. 246 mg C kg -1 soil) in Plot 2 compared to the Plot 1. Based on 13 C natural abundance, we found that in Plot 2, carbon flow was dominated from micro- (<0.25 mm) to macroaggregates (0.25-2 and >2 mm), whereas in Plot 1, carbon flow occurred between large and small macroaggregates, and from micro-to macroaggregates. Straw incorporation holds significant promise for enhancing soil fertility and mitigating air pollution stemming from straw burning. However, this practice concurrently elevates the production and emission of methane (CH 4 ) from paddy ecosystems. Despite its environmental impact, the precise mechanisms behind the heightened CH 4 production resulting from long-term straw incorporation remain elusive. In a 32-year field experiment featuring three fertilization treatments (CFS-chemical fertilizer with wheat straw, CF-chemical fertilizer, and CK-unamended), we investigated the impact of abiotic (soil physicochemical properties) and biotic (methanogenic abundance, diversity, and community composition) factors on CH 4 production in paddy fields. Results revealed a significantly higher CH 4 production potential under CFS treatment compared to CF and CK treatments. The partial least squares path model revealed that soil physicochemical properties (path coefficient = 0.61), methanogenic diversity (path coefficient = -0.43), and methanogenic abundance (path coefficient = 0.29) collectively determined CH 4 production potential, explaining 77% of the variance. Enhanced soil organic carbon content and water content, resulting from straw incorporation, emerged as pivotal factors positively correlated with CH 4 production potential. Under CFS treatment, lower Shannon index of methanogens, compared to CF and CK treatments, was attributed to increased Methanosarcina. Notably, the Shannon index and relative abundance of Methanosarcina exhibited negative and positive correlations with CH 4 production potential, respectively. Methanogenic abundance, bolstered by straw incorporation, significantly amplified overall potential. Sewage sludge applications release contaminants to agricultural soils, such as potentially toxic metals and microplastics (MPs). However, factors determining the subsequent mobility of MPs in long-term field conditions are poorly understood. This study aimed to understand the vertical distribution of MPs in soils amended with sewage sludge in comparison to conventional mineral fertiliser for 24 years. The depth-dependent MP mass and number concentrations, plastic types, sizes and shapes were compared with the distribution of organic carbon and metals to provide insights into potentially transport-limiting factors. Polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene mass concentrations were screened down to 90 cm depth via pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. MP number concentrations, additional plastic types, sizes, and shapes were analysed down to 40 cm depth using micro-Fourier transform-infrared imaging. Across all depths, MP numbers were twice and mass concentrations 8 times higher when sewage sludge was applied, with a higher share of textile-related plastics, more fibres and on average larger particles than in soil receiving mineral fertiliser. Transport of MPs beyond the plough layer (0-20 cm) is often assumed negligible, but substantial MP numbers (42 %) and mass (52 %) were detected down to 70 cm in sewage sludge-amended soils. The initial mobilization of MPs was shape- and size-dependent, because the fractions of fragmental-shaped and relatively small MPs increased directly below the plough layer, but not at greater depths. The sharp decline of total MP concentrations between 20 and 40 cm depth resembled that of metals and organic matter suggesting similar transport limitations. We hypothesize that the effect of soil management, such as ploughing, on soil compactness and subsequent transport by bioturbation and via macropores drives vertical MP distribution over long time scales. Maize cultivation is under the growing threat of charcoal rot (Macrophomina phaseolina). Chemical control of diseases imparts serious health hazards to humans and the ecosystem. Biochar as an alternative disease management approach has been under consideration of the researchers for some time now. The biochar utilized in this study was derived from maize stalks and cobs. Crystallographic structure, inorganic minerals content and size of maize biochar were analyzed by powder X-ray diffractometer, while scanning electron microscopy revealed rough, irregular, tubular structure of the biochar surface. EDX spectra revealed that the maize biochar composition was dominated by 'C' followed by 'O'. The current study was designed to determine the synergistic effect of maize biochar (MB), and biocontrol agent (BCA) Trichoderma viride as soil amendments on the suppression of M. phaseolina. In vitro bioassays were conducted to check the efficiency of antagonistic effect of Trichoderma spp., in combination with maize biochar. On the basis of maximum mycelial growth inhibition T. viride was selected for a glasshouse experiment. Maize plants were grown in pots containing a mixture of soil with MB at application at the rate of 3 and 6% (v/v) separately, associated with or without T. viride. Treatments amended with 3% MB inoculated with M. phaseolina significantly reduced the percentage disease severity index by 40%. While in the presence of T. viride, 3% MB showed maximum disease suppression and a minimum percentage severity index i.e. 60 and 20%, respectively. Highest nitrogen contents were 18.4 g kg -1 observed in treatment 6% MB, while highest phosphorus and potassium contents were 3.11 and 15.2 g kg -1 , respectively in the treatment with 3% MB. Conclusively, the effect of variable concentrations of maize biochar and T. viride as soil amendment was evident on the development of charcoal rot, growth and physiology of maize plants. Pesticide contamination and soil degradation present significant challenges in agricultural ecosystems, driving extensive exploration of biochar (BC) and nano-biochar (NBC) as potential solutions. This study examines their effects on soil properties, microbial communities, and the fate of two key pesticides: the hydrophilic methomyl (MET) and the hydrophobic lambda-cyhalothrin (LCT), at different concentrations (1%, 3%, and 5% w w -1 ) in agricultural soil. Through a carefully designed seven-week black bean pot experiment, the results indicated that the addition of BC/NBC significantly influenced soil dynamics. Soil pH and moisture content (MC) notably increased, accompanied by a general rise in soil organic carbon (SOC) content. However, in BC5/NBC5 treatments, SOC declined after the 2nd or 3rd week. Microbial populations, including total plate count (TPC), phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB), and nitrogen-fixing bacteria (NFB), showed dynamic responses to BC/NBC applications. BC1/NBC1 and BC3/NBC3 applications led to a significant increase in microbial populations, whereas BC5/NBC5 treatments experienced a decline after the initial surge. Furthermore, the removal efficiency of both MET and LCT increased with higher BC/NBC concentrations, with NBC demonstrating greater efficacy than BC. Degradation kinetics, modeled by a first-order equation, revealed that MET degraded faster than LCT. Understanding the environmental fate of organic carbon associated with iron (OC-Fe) is critically important for investigating OC preservation in aquatic systems. Here, we first investigate 13 C and 14 C isotopes of OC-Fe within grain size-fractionated sediments retrieved from the East China Sea and estimate their sources and reactivities of OC-Fe through isotope-mixing models and thermal pyrolysis approaches in order to reveal the fate of OC-Fe on continental shelves influenced by hydrodynamic processes. Our results show that the OC-Fe proportion in total OC ( f OC-Fe ) in the sortable silt fractions (20-63 μm) is the highest among three grain size fractions, likely suggesting that hydrodynamics may enhance the iron protection on OC. In addition, Δ 14 C OC-Fe values fall within the range of from -358.73 to -64.03‰, and both Δ 14 C OC-Fe values and ancient OC-Fe% exhibit strong positive linear relationships with f OC-Fe . This emphasized that the hydrodynamic processes may cause the ancient OC to be tightly associated with Fe, accompanying OC-Fe aging. Our findings shed new light on the preservation of OC-Fe in marginal seas to advance the recognition of carbon "rusty sinks" in seafloor sediments.

High uncertainty in optical properties of black carbon (BC) involving heterogeneous chemistry has recently attracted increasing attention in the field of atmospheric climatology. To fill the gap in BC optical knowledge so as to estimate more accurate climate effects and serve the response to global warming, it is beneficial to conduct site-level studies on BC light absorption enhancement (E abs ) characteristics. Real-time surface gas and particulate pollutant observations during the summer and winter over Wuhan were utilized for the analysis of E abs simulated by minimum R squared (MRS), considering two distinct atmospheric conditions (2015 and 2017). In general, differences in aerosol emissions led to E abs differential behaviors. The summer average of E abs (1.92 ± 0.55) in 2015 was higher than the winter average (1.27 ± 0.42), while the average (1.11 ± 0.20) in 2017 summer was lower than that (1.67 ± 0.69) in winter. E abs and R BC (representing the mass ratio of non-refractory constituents to elemental carbon) constraints suggest that E abs increased with the increase in R BC under the ambient condition enriched by secondary inorganic aerosol (SIA), with a maximum growth rate of 70.6% in 2015 summer. However, E abs demonstrated a negative trend against R BC in 2017 winter due to the more complicated mixing state. The result arose from the opposite impact of hygroscopic SIA and absorbing OC/irregular distributed coatings on amplifying the light absorbency of BC. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis revealed a robust positive correlation (R > 0.9) between aerosol chemical compositions (including sulfate, nitrate, ammonium and secondary organic carbon), which could be significantly perturbed by only a small fraction of absorbing materials or restructuring BC through gaps filling. Exposure assessments to metalworking fluids (MWF) is difficult considering the complex nature of MWF. This study describes a comprehensive exposure assessment to straight and water-based MWFs among workers from 20 workshops. Metal and organic carbon (OC) content in new and used MWF were determined. Full-shift air samples of inhalable particulate and gaseous fraction were collected and analysed gravimetrically and for metals, OC, and aldehydes. Exposure determinants were ascertained through observations and interviews with workers. Determinants associated with personal inhalable particulate and gaseous fractions were systematically identified using mixed models. Similar inhalable particle exposure was observed for straight and water-based MWFs (64-386 µg/m 3 ). The gaseous fraction was the most important contributor to the total mass fraction for both straight (322-2362 µg/m 3 ) and water-based MWFs (101-699 µg/m 3 ). The aerosolized particles exhibited low metal content irrespective of the MWF type; however, notable concentrations were observed in the sumps potentially reaching hazardous concentrations. Job activity clusters were important determinants for both exposure to particulate and gaseous fractions from straight MWF. Current machine enclosures remain an efficient determinant to reduce particulate MWF but were inefficient for the gaseous fraction. Properly managed water-based MWF meaning no recycling and no contamination from hydraulic fluids minimizes gaseous exposure. Workshop temperature also influenced the mass fractions. Background: Previous work reported increased rates of cardiovascular hospitalizations associated with increased source-specific PM 2.5 concentrations in New York State, despite decreased PM 2.5 concentrations. We also found increased rates of ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) associated with short-term increases in concentrations of ultrafine particles and other traffic-related pollutants in the 2014-2016 period, but not during 2017-2019 in Rochester. Changes in PM 2.5 composition and sources resulting from air quality policies (e.g., Tier 3 light-duty vehicles) may explain the differences. Thus, this study aimed to estimate whether rates of STEMI were associated with organic carbon and source-specific PM 2.5 concentrations., Methods: Using STEMI patients treated at the University of Rochester Medical Center, compositional and source-apportioned PM 2.5 concentrations measured in Rochester, a time-stratified case-crossover design, and conditional logistic regression models, we estimated the rate of STEMI associated with increases in mean primary organic carbon (POC), secondary organic carbon (SOC), and source-specific PM 2.5 concentrations on lag days 0, 0-3, and 0-6 during 2014-2019., Results: The associations of an increased rate of STEMI with interquartile range (IQR) increases in spark-ignition emissions (GAS) and diesel (DIE) concentrations in the previous few days were not found from 2014 to 2019. However, IQR increases in GAS concentrations were associated with an increased rate of STEMI on the same day in the 2014-2016 period (Rate ratio [RR] = 1.69; 95% CI = 0.98, 2.94; 1.73 μg/m 3 ). In addition, each IQR increase in mean SOC concentration in the previous 6 days was associated with an increased rate of STEMI, despite imprecision (RR = 1.14; 95% CI = 0.89, 1.45; 0.42 μg/m 3 )., Conclusion: Increased SOC concentrations may be associated with increased rates of STEMI, while there seems to be a declining trend in adverse effects of GAS on triggering of STEMI. In order to foresee the impact of permafrost thaw on CO 2 emissions by high-latitude rivers, in-situ measurements across a permafrost and climate/vegetation gradient, coupled with assessment of possible physico-chemical and landscape controlling factors are necessary. Here we chose 34 catchments of variable stream order (1 to 9) and watershed size (1 to >10 5  km 2 ) located across a permafrost and biome gradient in the Western Siberian Lowland (WSL), from the permafrost-free southern taiga to the continuous permafrost zone of tundra. Across the south-north transect, maximal CO 2 emissions (2.2 ± 1.1 g C-CO 2 m -2 d -1 ) occurred from rivers of the discontinuous/sporadic permafrost zone, i.e., geographical permafrost thawing boundary. In this transitional zone, fluvial C emission to downstream export ratio was as high as 8.0, which greatly (x 10) exceeded the ratio in the permafrost free and continuous permafrost zones. Such a high evasion at the permafrost thawing front can stem from an optimal combination of multiple environmental factors: maximal active layer thickness, sizable C stock in soils, and mobilization of labile organic nutrients from dispersed peat ice that enhanced DOC and POC processing in the water column, likely due to priming effect. Grassland ecology is deteriorating along with a fall in biodiversity and ecosystem services as a result of climate change in the Mediterranean regions. Understanding the mechanism of feedback between soil properties related to available water and increasing aridity is a key component of preserving grassland ecosystems. Structural equation modelling was used to explore a deep understanding of the underlying mechanisms of the feedback between soil properties related to available water and increasing aridity. In most cases, vegetation patches had significantly higher soil properties related to available water than inter-patches. Compared to inter-patches, the fine fractions of silt and clay content, soil organic carbon, saturated hydraulic conductivity, and available water under vegetation patches increased by 3.79%-7.64%, 31.08%-37.64%, 96.65%-141.14%, and 2.63%-9.21%, respectively, under limestone and mica schist lithologies. The fine fractions of silt and clay content, soil organic carbon, and available water were more responsive to the aridity index than the vegetation patch, while saturated hydraulic conductivity was more responsive to the vegetation patch than the aridity index. These complex relationships demonstrated that the available water was significantly positively affected by the vegetation pattern (0.09) and the aridity index (0.21-0.38). Soil texture had a significantly direct effect (0.43-0.53) on available water. Increasing aridity would strengthen the contrast in soil water availability while weakening the contrast in saturated hydraulic conductivity between vegetation patches and inter-patches. Available water was controlled by many aspects except vegetation pattern and aridity index. Understanding these relationships helped in predicting and mitigating the impacts of climate change on soil properties related to available water. The utilization of biodegradable mulch films (bio-MFs) is essential for agricultural safety. This study explored the effects of no MF (CK), aging bio-MF (BM), non-aging bio-MF (NBM), and aging polyethylene (PE)-MF (PEM) on swine manure composting. The results demonstrated that outdoor aging (45 days) accelerated the macroscopic degradation of bio-MF in the BM. A reduction in NH 4 + -N and NH 3 emissions in the initial composting was observed owing to an increase in the carbon source or the bulking effect provided by the MFs. N 2 O emissions from days 9 to 21 were higher in the PEM than other treatments because of the formation of anaerobic zone in the MF-based aggregates. An obvious increase of amoA in PEM indicated a promoted nitrification during the maturation phase, meanwhile the increase of NO 2 - -N and aggregate promoted denitrification. Studies on the conversion of organic materials into biochar have been preferred due to the effectiveness of biochar. Aquatic ecosystems harbor a significant amount of organic biomass, much of which is transferred to terrestrial systems, but often remains as waste. In this study, Posidonia oceanica (PO), Halidrys siliquosa (HS), Ulva lactuca (UL), and Codium fragile (CF), commonly found as marine waste along coastlines globally, were used as feedstocks for biochar production under four different pyrolysis conditions. Several analyses were conducted to characterize both marine waste and biochar forms in order to evaluate their potential for agricultural applications. The results showed that marine wastes and biochars contain almost all the necessary nutrients required for plant nutrition in varying proportions. The CF feedstock has a higher nitrogen (N) content than other feedstocks, while the UL contains greater phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and magnesium (Mg). Additionally, the PO exhibits high calcium (Ca), boron (B), and manganese (Mn) contents. Carbon (C) content also varied significantly depending on the biochar production technique. Temperature had a greater influence than holding time on the disparities in the elemental composition of biochars. The pH values of all types of biochar increased with rising temperature. However, the electrical conductivity (EC) values of HS and PO biochars decreased with increasing temperature. The highest mean BET surface area was observed in PO biochars. However, UL biochar has the most significant proportional increase compared to the UL feedstock by 218 times. All characteristics determined for all materials (feedstock, biochar) were within acceptable limits for application to soil. In conclusion, both marine waste and biochar forms may be confidently used for agricultural purposes, particularly in soil applications, when considering the characterization parameters within the scope of this research. The total organic carbon (OC) from plant litter in riparian zones is an important nutrient source for aquatic organisms and plays a crucial role in the nutrient cycling of river ecosystems. Nevertheless, the total amount of OC in dammed rivers gradually decreases, and the restoration methods are rarely researched. A hypothesis was proposed that the periodic inundation altered the process of OC release from plant litter. To explore the impact of periodic inundation on OC release from litter in the riparian zone, litter bags in situ tests were conducted in the Yalong River. Three inundation treatments were conducted for the test samples, which were NS (never submerged by water), PIS (periodic submerged), and PMS (permanent submerged). Results indicated that the amount of OC released from litters in PIS treatment was about 1.1 times that in PMS treatment, and about 2.1 times that in NS treatment. The average release rate coefficient k of PIS treatment (at mean water level) was the highest (12.8 × 10 -4  d -1 ), followed by PMS treatment (11.0 × 10 -4  d -1 ), and NS treatment (5.6 × 10 -4  d -1 ), which demonstrated that the periodic inundation was critical for OC release. The mean water level was a demarcation line where there was a significant difference in the release of OC in the riparian zone (p < 0.05). Flow velocity alone could account for 84% of the variation in OC release rate, while the flow velocity and inundation duration together could achieve an explanatory degree of 86%. Trait heritability and the response to selection depend on genetic variation, a prerequisite to developing sorghum varieties with desirable agronomic traits and high carbon sequestration for sustainable crop production and soil health. The present study aimed to assess the extent of genetic variability and associations among agronomic and carbon storage traits in selected sorghum genotypes to identify the best candidates for production or breeding. Fifty genotypes were evaluated at Ukulinga, Bethlehem and Silverton sites in South Africa during the 2022/23 growing season. The following agronomic and carbon storage traits were collected: days to 50% heading (DTH), days to 50% maturity (DTM), plant height (PH), total plant biomass (PB), shoot biomass (SB), root biomass (RB), root-to-shoot biomass ratio (RS), grain yield (GY), harvest index (HI), shoot carbon content (SCc), root carbon content (RCc), grain carbon content (GCc), total plant carbon stock (PCs), shoot carbon stock (SCs), root carbon stock (RCs), and root-to-shoot carbon stock ratio (RCs/SCs), and grain carbon stock (GCs). Higher genotypic coefficient of variations (GCVs) were recorded for GY at 45.92%, RB (39.24%), RCs/SCs (38.45), and RCs (34.62). Higher phenotypic coefficient of variations (PCVs) were recorded for PH (68.91%), followed by GY (51.8%), RB (50.51%), RS (41.96%), RCs/SCs (44.90%), and GCs (41.90%). High broad-sense heritability and genetic advance were recorded for HI (83.76 and 24.53%), GY (78.59 and 9.98%), PB (74.14 and 13.18%) and PCs (53.63 and 37.57%), respectively, suggesting a marked genetic contribution to the traits. Grain yield exhibited positive association with HI (r = 0.76; r = 0.79), DTH (r = 0.13; r = 0.31), PH (r = 0.1; r = 0.27), PB (r = 0.01; r = 0.02), RB (r = 0.05; r = 0.06) based on genotypic and phenotypic correlations, respectively. Further, the path analysis revealed significant positive direct effects of SB (0.607) and RB (0.456) on GY. The RS exerted a positive and significant indirect effect (0.229) on grain yield through SB. Wheat is a vital global food crop, yet it faces challenges in saline-alkali soils where Fusarium crown rot significantly impacts growth. Variations in wheat growth across regions are often attributed to uneven terrain. To explore these disparities, we examined well-growing and poorly growing wheat samples and their rhizosphere soils. Measurements included wheat height, root length, fresh weight, and Fusarium crown rot severity. Well-growing wheat exhibited greater height, root length, and fresh weight, with a lower Fusarium crown rot disease index compared to poorly growing wheat. Analysis of rhizosphere soil revealed higher alkalinity; lower nutrient levels; and elevated Na, K, and Ca levels in poorly growing wheat compared to well-growing wheat. High-throughput sequencing identified a higher proportion of unique operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in poorly growing wheat, suggesting selection for distinct fungal species under stress. FUNGuild analysis indicated a higher prevalence of pathogenic microbial communities in poorly growing wheat rhizosphere soil. This study underscores how uneven terrains in saline-alkali soils affect pH, nutrient dynamics, mineral content, wheat health, and rhizosphere fungal community structure.

Understanding of characteristics and transport of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in heterogeneous estuarine environments is limited. Furthermore, the role of suspended particles (SPS) in different layers remains unclear. This study explores the multiphase distribution process and mechanism of PFAAs controlled by SPS across surface and bottom layers in five small estuaries. Peaks in PFAA concentrations are consistently observed at strongly stratified sites. Concentrations of the PFAAs in both surface and bottom SPS decreased as the degree of mixing increased from strongly stratified levels to well-mixed levels. The water-SPS partitioning of some short-chain PFAAs (PFBS, PFHxA, and PFHpA) is influenced by environmental factors (pH, depth, temperature, and salinity) due to electrostatic interactions, while the sorption of some long-chain PFAAs (PFOA, PFOS, and PFNA) is controlled by SPS and dissolved organic carbon (OC), driven by hydrophobic interactions. Additionally, SPS dominates OC transport in estuarine systems, except in sandy sediment environments. SPS plays a dominant role in PFAA partitioning in both surface and bottom water-SPS systems (p < 0.05), and salinity only significantly affects PFBS in bottom layer (p < 0.01). Although seaweeds rank among the most productive vegetated habitats globally, their inclusion within Blue Carbon frameworks is at its onset, partially because they usually grow in rocky substrates and their organic carbon (C org ) is mostly exported and stored beyond their habitat and thus, demonstrating its long-term storage is challenging. Here, we studied the sedimentary C org storage in macroalgal forests dominated by Gongolaria barbata and in adjacent seagrass Cymodocea nodosa mixed with Caulerpa prolifera algae meadows, and bare sand habitats in Mediterranean shallow coastal embayments. We characterized the biogeochemistry of top 30 cm sedimentary deposits, including sediment grain-size, organic matter and C org contents, C org burial rates and the provenance of sedimentary C org throughout stable carbon isotopes (δ 13 C org ) and pyrolysis analyses. Sediment C org stocks and burial rates (since 1950) in G. barbata forests (mean ± SE, 3.5 ± 0.2 kg C org  m -2 accumulated at 15.5 ± 1.6 g C org  m -2  y -1 ) fall within the range of those reported for traditional Blue Carbon Ecosystems. Although the main species contributing to sedimentary C org stocks in all vegetated habitats examined was C. nodosa (36 ± 2 %), macroalgae contributed 49 % (19 ± 2 % by G. barbata and 30 ± 3 % by C. prolifera) based on isotope mixing model results. Analytical pyrolysis confirmed the presence of macroalgae-derived compounds in the sediments, including N-compounds and α-tocopherol linked to G. barbata and C. prolifera, respectively. The sedimentary C org burial rate linked to macroalgae within the macroalgal forests examined ranged from 5.4 to 9.5 g C org  m -2  y -1 (7.4 ± 2 g C org  m -2  y -1 ). Thermokarst (thaw) lakes of permafrost peatlands are among the most important sentinels of climate change and sizable contributors of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in high latitudes. These lakes are humic, often acidic and exhibit fast growing/drainage depending on the local environmental and permafrost thaw. In contrast to good knowledge of the thermokarst lake water hydrochemistry and GHG fluxes, the sediments pore waters remain virtually unknown, despite the fact that these are hot spots of biogeochemical processes including GHG generation. Towards better understating of dissolved organic matter (DOM) quality at the lake water - sediment interface and in the sediments pore waters, here we studied concentration and optical (UV, visual) properties of DOM of 11 thermokarst lakes located in four permafrost zones of Western Siberia Lowland. We found systematic evaluation of DOM concentration, SUVA and various optical parameters along the vertical profile of lake sediments. The lake size and hence, the stage of lake development, had generally weak control on DOM quality. The permafrost zone exhibited clear impact on DOM porewater concentration, optical characteristics, aromaticity and weight average molecular weight (WAMW). The lowest quality of DOM, reflected in highest SUVA and WAMW, corresponding to the dominance of terrestrial sources, was observed at the southern boundary of the permafrost, in the sporadic/discontinuous zone. This suggests active mobilization of organic matter leachates from the interstitial peat and soil porewaters to the lake, presumably via subsurface or suprapermafrost influx. Artificial forest restoration is widely recognized as a crucial approach to enhance the potential of soil carbon sequestration. Nevertheless, there is still limited understanding regarding the dynamics of aggregate organic carbon (OC) and the underlying mechanisms driving these dynamics after artificial forest restoration. To address this gap, we studied Pinus tabuliformis forests and adjacent farmland in three recovery periods (13, 24 and 33 years) in the Loess Plateau region. Samples of undisturbed soil from the surface layer were collected and divided into three aggregate sizes: >2 mm (large aggregate), 0.25-2 mm (medium aggregate), and <0.25 mm (small aggregate). The aim was to examine the distribution of OC and changes in enzyme activity within each aggregate size. The findings revealed a significant increase in OC content for all aggregate sizes following the restoration of Pinus tabuliformis forests. After 33 years of recovery, the OC of large aggregates, medium aggregates and micro-aggregates increased by (30.23 ± 9.85)%, (36.71 ± 21.60)% and (37.88 ± 16.07)% respectively compared with that of farmland. Moreover, the restoration of Pinus tabuliformis forests lead to increased activity of hydrolytic enzymes and decreased activity of oxidative enzymes. It is noteworthy that the regulation of carbon in all aggregates is influenced by soil P-limitation. In large aggregates, P-limitation promotes the enhancement of hydrolytic enzyme activity, thereby facilitate OC accumulation. Conversely, in medium and small aggregates, P-limitation inhibits the increase in oxidative enzyme activity, resulting in OC accumulation. Coastal environments are a major source of marine methane in the atmosphere. Eutrophication and deoxygenation have the potential to amplify the coastal methane emissions. Here, we investigate methane dynamics in the eutrophic Stockholm Archipelago. We cover a range of sites with contrasting water column redox conditions and rates of organic matter degradation, with the latter reflected by the depth of the sulfate-methane transition zone (SMTZ) in the sediment. We find the highest benthic release of methane (2.2-8.6 mmol m -2 d -1 ) at sites where the SMTZ is located close to the sediment-water interface (2-10 cm). A large proportion of methane is removed in the water column via aerobic or anaerobic microbial pathways. At many locations, water column methane is highly depleted in 13 C, pointing toward substantial bubble dissolution. Calculated and measured rates of methane release to the atmosphere range from 0.03 to 0.4 mmol m -2 d -1 and from 0.1 to 1.7 mmol m -2 d -1 , respectively, with the highest fluxes at locations with a shallow SMTZ and anoxic and sulfidic bottom waters. Taken together, our results show that sites suffering most from both eutrophication and deoxygenation are hotspots of coastal marine methane emissions.

The benthic foraminiferal community is an excellent bio-indicator of pollution in coastal and marginal marine settings. Their abundance, diversity and its relationship with environmental parameters, viz. grain size, organic carbon (C org ) and trace metals concentration, from the surface sediment layer of the southwestern shelf of the Bay of Bengal, have been used to understand the marine pollution in this study. A total of 32 surface sediment samples were collected at various water depths.The samples were analysed for grain size distribution, organic matter (OM), foraminiferal and trace metals studies. Statistical analyses such as correlation matrix, PCA (Principal Component Analysis) and cluster analysis show that the foraminiferal species composition is significantly influenced by the organic carbon (C org ), Co, Pb, Zn, Cr, and Ni concentrations. The dominance of stress-tolerant species, viz. Ammonia beccarii, Ammonia tepida, Nonion faba, Bulimina marginata, Bolivina robusta, Elphidium craticulatum and Elphidium advenum, as well as less species diversity, demonstrates the elevated C org and trace metal pollution in the marine environment., (© 2023. In the aftermath of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, a pioneering large-scale decontamination project was initiated, aiming to enable the return of evacuees. This project, the first of its kind in human history, involved the transportation of soils collected during decontamination to interim storage facilities. Before recycling or disposal, these soils undergo processes like volume reduction. However, there's a need for innovative methods to reduce volume effectively and treat secondary wastes more efficiently. The current study explores the impact of a dispersant, sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP), on the behavior of radiocesium (r-Cs: 137 Cs) dynamics in different size fractions of radioactively contaminated soils from Fukushima. The solid-phase speciation analysis of Fukushima soils validated that at least 50% of the 137 Cs or other minerals are associated with difficult-to-extract soil phases. Nonetheless, the low 137 Cs/ 133 Cs ratio in corresponding soil phases implies a slower r-Cs fixation mechanism. The wet-sieving of r-Cs contaminated soil fraction, < 2 mm, with SHMP, resulted in different soil subfractions (2000-212, 212-53, and < 53 μm). Following SHMP treatment, dispersion of > 92% of 137 Cs associated with < 212 μm soil size fractions was observed. The migration of 137 Cs towards smaller soil size fractions can be attributed to either SHMP-induced cation exchange or the formation of polyvalent complexes involving SHMP and soil minerals. The condensation of 137 Cs in < 212 μm, as induced by SHMP, enabled the subsequent reuse of the larger soil fraction (> 212 μm), which was less contaminated. New particle formation (NPF) is considered a major source of aerosol particles and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN); however, our understanding of NPF and the subsequent particle growth mechanisms in coastal areas remains limited. This study provides evidence of frequent NPF events followed by particle growth in the middle Adriatic Sea during the summer months at the coastal station of Rogoznica in Croatia. To our knowledge, this is the first study to report such events in this region. Our research aims to improve the understanding of NPF by investigating particle growth through detailed physicochemical characterization and event classification. We used a combination of online measurements and offline particle collection, followed by a thorough chemical analysis. Our results suggest the role of bromine in the particle growth process and provide evidence for its involvement in combination with organic compounds. In addition, we demonstrated the significant influence of surface-active substances (SAS) on particle growth. NPF and particle growth events have been observed in air masses originating from the Adriatic Sea, which can serve as an important source of volatile organic compounds (VOC). Our study shows an intricate interplay between bromine, organic carbon (OC), and SAS in atmospheric particle growth, contributing to a better understanding of coastal NPF processes. In this context, we also introduced a new approach using the semi-empirical 1 st derivative method to determine the growth rate for each time point that is not sensitive to the nonlinear behavior of the particle growth over time. We observed that during NPF and particle growth event days, the OC concentration measured in the ultrafine mode particle fraction was higher compared to non-event days. Moreover, in contrast to non-event days, bromine compounds were detected in the ultrafine mode atmospheric particle fraction on nearly all NPF and particle growth event days. Regarding sulfuric acid, the measured sulfate concentration in the ultrafine mode atmospheric particle fraction on both NPF event and non-event days showed no significant differences.
