Graphene is a fundamental unit of carbon materials and, thus, primary sp 2 -bonded carbon material. Graphene is, however, easily broken macroscopically despite high mechanical strength, although its natural degradation has rarely been considered. In this work, we evaluate the natural degradation of two-layer graphene in vacuo, in low-humidity air, and in high-humidity air at 300, 400, 450, and 500 K. Over 1000 days of degradation at 300 K, the graphene structure was highly maintained in vacuo, whereas the layer number of graphene tended to decrease in high- and low-humidity air. Water was slightly reacted/chemisorbed on graphene to form surface oxygen groups at 300 K. At 450 and 500 K, graphene was moderately volatilized in vacuo and was obviously oxidized in high- and low-humidity air. Surprisingly, the oxidation of graphene was more suppressed in the high-humidity air than in the low-humidity air, indicating that water worked as an anti-oxidizer of graphene by preventing the chemisorption of oxygen on the graphene surface.

The adsorption dynamics and mechanism of nitrogen molecules in 1-7 nm carbon nanotubes (CNTs) at 77 K were investigated by experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. The adsorbed nitrogen amount rapidly increased in 7 nm CNTs, while it gradually increased in 1 and 3 nm CNTs. The gradual increase in 3 nm CNTs was unexpected because of the presence of sufficient adsorption sites and the weak adsorption potential of nitrogen. The molecular dynamics simulations indicated that molecules were condensed in the entrance of nanopores after monolayer adsorption in 3 nm CNTs and monolayer and bilayer adsorption in 5 nm CNTs, called nanopore entrance filling. The proposed adsorption mechanism of nitrogen molecules in CNT nanopores is as follows: first, layer-by-layer adsorption occurs on monolayer sites, followed by preferential adsorption at the nanopore entrance. Consequently, preadsorbed molecules form a fluidic pore neck similar to an ink-bottle pore. Then, newly adsorbed molecules are condensed on the fluidic pore neck, and condensed molecules in the nanopore entrance finally move into the inner part of the nanopore. The proposed sequential adsorption mechanism via nanopore entrance filling without pore blocking starkly differs from micropore filling in micropores and layer-by-layer adsorption associated with capillary condensation in mesopores.

Catalysts of methane decomposition to hydrogen and aromatization are inevitable for the development of natural gas applications. Metal catalysts have been developed to achieve highly efficient methane decomposition and aromatization under 1000 K using various substrates, such as zeolites and silica. Here, we performed a consecutive study on methane decomposition using Co-, Ni-, Cu-, Mo-, and Ru-based nanocatalysts in the bulk, on a SiO 2 substrate, and in mesoporous SiO 2 . The crystallite sizes of the bulk nanocatalysts, and nanocatalysts on nonporous and mesoporous SiO 2 were controlled to 80-85, 30-70, and 3-11 nm, respectively. The nanocatalysts on mesoporous SiO 2 exhibited high activity on hydrogen and benzene productions via methane decomposition, owing to the nanosize effect of the nanocatalysts and adsorption potentials in the SiO 2 mesopores. In particular, the Ni nanocatalysts on mesoporous SiO 2 exhibited hydrogen production activity from 650 K, which was the lowest temperature, compared with those in previous reports on hydrogen production. In addition, the catalytic activity was maintained for over 15 h at 650 and 800 K with recyclability. The overoxidation of Ni species in the SiO 2 mesopores might have promoted the transformation reaction of CH 4 to CH x and prevented coking by the largeness of the SiO 2 mesopores in comparison with microporous media.

Carbon utilization techniques to mitigate the impact on global warming are an important field in environmental science. CO 2 reduction is a significant step for carbon utilization. However, CO 2 reduction with less energy consumption has major challenges. In this study, CO 2 thermal reduction was demonstrated using nanocatalysts at temperatures lower than 1000 K, and the CO 2 sorption and reduction mechanisms within the temperature range of 300-1000 K were evaluated. The physical adsorption on nanocatalysts with a crystal size of 7.4 ± 0.4 nm (10 nm-nanocatalysts) majorly occurred at 300 K and was considerably decreased beyond that temperature. CO 2 chemisorption occurred above 450 K and subsequent CO 2 reduction occurred above 500 K, which was expected based on the temperature-programmed reaction. CO 2 reduction decreased above 900 K by the deactivation of the 10-nm nanocatalyst as a result of its crystal growth. The transmission electron microscopy images also indicated the complete reduction of CO 2 into carbon products at 600 and 800 K. Therefore, an optimal condition of CO 2 reduction in the temperature range of 500-800 K. The highly active thermocatalyst achieved CO 2 reduction into CO and carbon products without any reducing agents even at an extremely low temperature (500 K). In summary, temperature-dependent CO 2 sorption and reduction were observed on the 10-nm nanocatalyst; CO 2 physical adsorption at 300-500 K, CO 2 chemisorption above 450 K, CO 2 reduction at 500-850 K, and CO 2 and CO releases above 800 K.

The interfaces of carbon materials play an important role in various technological and scientific research fields. Graphene is the fundamental unit of sp 2 carbon allotropes, and the evaluation of the interfacial properties of graphene-related materials is thus essential to clarify the molecular mechanisms occurring at the interfaces. Ideally, graphene is exclusively composed of sp 2 carbon atoms; however, some parts of graphene normally contain sp 3 carbon atoms with oxygen functional groups, vacancy, and grain boundary defects, and these structural characteristics need to be considered to reveal the interfacial properties. Herein, we demonstrate the interfacial properties of graphene-related materials by analyzing the water adsorption properties of graphene, hydrogenated graphene (graphane), and partially oxidized graphene (named as graphoxide) using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. The hydrophobicity evaluated from the simulated water adsorption isotherms followed the order: graphane > graphene > graphoxide with 1% oxygen atomic ratio > graphoxide with 3% oxygen atomic ratio > graphoxide with 5% oxygen atomic ratio. The potential calculations between a single water molecule and graphoxides revealed that the presence of oxygen functional groups enhanced the hydrophilicity of graphoxide. This study also disclosed some differences between the hydrophobic interfaces of graphene and graphane, which have been rarely evaluated. Surprisingly, the hydrophobicity of graphane was higher than that of graphene despite the similar potential well depths between a water molecule and graphene/graphane. This was caused by the restriction of water orientation on graphane; water was preferentially adsorbed on the honeycomb center or concave sites in the initial adsorption, and it was hard to interact with neighboring water molecules. The different structures revealed for the graphene-related materials with nanoscale roughness played important roles in controlling the water vapor adsorption mechanism.

Defects are widely present in nanomaterials, and they are recognized as the active sites that tune surface properties in the local region for catalysis. Recently, the theory linking defect structures and catalytic properties of nanocatalysts has been most commonly described. In this study, we prepared boron-doped carbon nano-onions (B-CNOs) by applying an annealing treatment of ultradispersed nanodiamond particles and amorphous boron. These experimental conditions guarantee doping of CNOs with boron atoms in the entire carbon nanostructure, thereby ensuring structural homogeneity. In our research, we discuss the correlations between defective structures of B-CNOs with their catalytic properties toward SO 2 and tert -butanol dehydration. We show that there is a close relationship between the catalytic properties of the B-CNOs and the experimental conditions for their formation. It is not only the mass of the substrates used for the formation of B-CNOs that is crucial, that is, the mass ratio of NDs to amorphous B, but also the process, including temperature and gas atmosphere. As it was expected, all B-CNOs demonstrated significant catalytic activity in HSO 3 - oxidation. However, the subsequent annealing in an air atmosphere diminished their catalytic activity. Unfortunately, no direct relationship between the catalytic activity and the presence of heteroatoms on the B-CNO surface was observed. There was a linear dependence between catalytic activity and Raman reactivity factors for each of the B-CNO materials. In contrast to SO 2 oxidation, the B-CNO-a samples showed higher catalytic activity in tert -butanol dehydration due to the presence of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites. The occurence of three types of boron-Lewis sites differing in electron donor properties was confirmed using quantitative infrared spectroscopic measurements of pyridine adsorption.

Various carbon materials have been fabricated for use as catalyst supports, carriers, adsorbents, and electrodes as well as in other advanced applications. The performances of carbon materials in such applications can be improved by adjusting their physical properties, especially their nanostructures. The determination of the carbon nanostructure is thus considerably important. Reverse Monte Carlo and hybrid reverse Monte Carlo simulations, which are used to analyze the diffraction patterns of carbon materials, can be used to obtain nanostructure images. Here, we describe a new approach to carbon nanostructure investigation, namely, hybrid reverse molecular dynamics (HRMD) simulation. This approach has the advantage that all of the carbon atoms move toward probable carbon structures by force fields to adapt a simulated diffraction pattern to an experimental one, in contrast to the random movements in reverse Monte Carlo and hybrid reverse Monte Carlo simulations. HRMD simulation also prevents the formation of inappropriate structures.

Graphene is an ideal candidate to use in various applications as a component in semiconductor devices with excellent properties, such as its atomic thickness, optical transparency, chemical stability, and high electrical and thermal conductivities. The high gas sensitivities of graphene functionalized with metal, metal oxides, and other groups have been improved through intensive research. However, the development of a metal-free graphene gas sensor and clarification of its mechanism still remain a challenge. In this study, H 2 , CO 2 , NH 3 , and He gas sensing performances are demonstrated using two- to multilayered graphene, directly fabricated on a quartz substrate. The sheet resistances of more than 100 graphene layers were considerably changed from 3% to 6% by He gas injection, caused by its piezoresistive property. The anomalous resistance changes by piezoresistivity is a result of electron transfer path changes associated with graphene assemble structure changes by insertion of He gas between graphene crystal units and pressing graphene units. The sheet resistances of the synthesized graphene were found to dramatically change through physical adsorption and chemisorption. The chemisorption of NH 3 gas on functional oxygen groups at graphene edges was responsible for the chemiresistive behavior of the material. The gas sensing and piezoresistive mechanisms of graphene determined in this work sheds light on the development of a graphene gas sensor.

Hydroxyapatite [Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, HAP] has P-OH Brønsted acidic sites, Ca2+ Lewis acidic sites, and OH- and O2- basic sites on which acidic and basic gas molecules can be selectively adsorbed, and has no micropore onto which various molecules adsorb regardless of the chemical properties of gas molecules. The interaction between the surface sites and acidic and basic gas and water molecules has been investigated by evaluating the adsorption properties of various molecules on the surfaces of calcium-deficient HAP. The specific adsorption sites were assessed by examining the reversible and irreversible adsorption of NH3, CO2, aldehydes, and water vapor on HAP at the temperature of 298 K, using two HAP samples with different Ca/P ratios, but similar structures and surface areas: Ca-deficient HAP with an extreme lower Ca/P ratio (named P-HAP) and one with a higher Ca/P ratio (named C-HAP). Irreversible adsorption of NH3 on C-HAP is attributed to the adsorption on both Ca2+ Lewis acidic and P-OH Brønsted acidic sites. Irreversible adsorption on P-HAP is attributed to the adsorption on P-OH Brønsted acidic sites only. Irreversible adsorption of CO2 occurred on C-HAP only, and preferentially on OH- basic sites. Acetaldehyde undergoes a catalytic reaction over both OH- basic sites and surface P-OH Brønsted acidic sites at 298 K. Water irreversible adsorption was extensively observed for P-HAP, and water was barely desorbed at low pressures. In situ powder X-ray diffraction showed an asymmetric expansion of the lattice in the [100] direction, indicating that water was incorporated into P-HAP crystals, especially on structural OH- sites. Irreversible adsorption of acidic and basic molecules was therefore less observed on P-HAP than on C-HAP, but P-HAP had considerable irreversible adsorption of water vapor with associated asymmetric lattice expansion. The incorporation of water vapor was first observed and could be useful to improve adsorption or catalytic performance with the mediation of water vapor and/or hydration.

Supramolecular polymers have emerged in the last decade as highly accessible polymeric nanomaterials. An important step toward finely designed nanomaterials with versatile functions, such as those of natural proteins, is intricate topological control over their main chains. Herein, we report the facile one-shot preparation of supramolecular copolymers involving segregated secondary structures. By cooling non-polar solutions containing two monomers that individually afford helically folded and linearly extended secondary structures, we obtain unique nanofibers with coexisting distinct secondary structures. A spectroscopic analysis of the formation process of such topologically chimeric fibers reveals that the monomer composition varies gradually during the polymerization due to the formation of heteromeric hydrogen-bonded intermediates. We further demonstrate the folding of these chimeric fibers by light-induced deformation of the linearly extended segments.

Folding one-dimensional polymer chains into well-defined topologies represents an important organization process for proteins, but replicating this process for supramolecular polymers remains a challenging task. We report supramolecular polymers that can fold into protein-like topologies. Our approach is based on curvature-forming supramolecular rosettes, which affords kinetic control over the extent of helical folding in the resulting supramolecular fibers by changing the cooling rate for polymerization. When using a slow cooling rate, we obtained misfolded fibers containing a minor amount of helical domains that folded on a time scale of days into unique topologies reminiscent of the protein tertiary structures. Thermodynamic analysis of fibers with varying degrees of folding revealed that the folding is accompanied by a large enthalpic gain. The self-folding proceeds via ordering of misfolded domains in the main chain using helical domains as templates, as fully misfolded fibers prepared by a fast cooling rate do not self-fold.

Perovskites have been attracting attention because of their considerable luminescence properties. A conventional perovskite such as BaTiO 3 has no intrinsic photoluminescence. Doping with rare metals, nanocrystallization, and addition of organometallic halides induce significant photoluminescence and photovoltages. Here, we report anomalous light reflection and photoluminescence of BaTiO 3 on heating. Light absorption shifted from the near-ultraviolet region to the visible region on heating. The small emission peaks at around 400-500 nm disappeared and new peaks appeared above 800 nm; the quantum yields of these peaks were less than 1% and more than 7%, respectively.

In this study fully atomistic grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations have been employed to study the behaviour of an electrolyte salt (NaPF 6 ) and different non-aqueous (organic) solvents in carbon nanopores, to reveal the structure and storage mechanism. Organic solutions of Na + and PF 6 - ions at 1 M concentration were considered, based on the conditions in operational sodium ion batteries and supercapacitors. Three organic solvents with different properties were selected: ethylene carbonate (EC), propylene carbonate (PC), and ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC). The effects of solvents, pore size and surface charge were quantified by calculating the radial distribution functions and ionic density profiles. It is shown that the organic solvent properties and nanopore confinement can affect the structure of the organic electrolyte solution. For the pore size range (1-5 nm) investigated in this paper, the surface charge used in this study can alter the sodium ions but not the solvent structure inside the pore.

We present the structures of NaCl aqueous solution in carbon nanotubes with diameters of 1, 2, and 3 nm based on an analysis performed using X-ray diffraction and canonical ensemble Monte Carlo simulations. Anomalously longer nearest-neighbor distances were observed in the electrolyte for the 1-nm-diameter carbon nanotubes; in contrast, in the 2 and 3 nm carbon nanotubes, the nearest-neighbor distances were shorter than those in the bulk electrolyte. We also observed similar properties for water in carbon nanotubes, which was expected because the main component of the electrolyte was water. However, the nearest-neighbor distances of the electrolyte were longer than those of water in all of the carbon nanotubes; the difference was especially pronounced in the 2-nm-diameter carbon nanotubes. Thus, small numbers of ions affected the entire structure of the electrolyte in the nanopores of the carbon nanotubes. The formation of strong hydration shells between ions and water molecules considerably interrupted the hydrogen bonding between water molecules in the nanopores of the carbon nanotubes. The hydration shell had a diameter of approximately 1 nm, and hydration shells were thus adopted for the nanopores of the 2-nm-diameter carbon nanotubes, providing an explanation for the large difference in the nearest-neighbor distances between the electrolyte and water in these nanopores.

Unlike classical covalent polymers, one-dimensionally (1D) elongated supramolecular polymers (SPs) can be encoded with high degrees of internal order by the cooperative aggregation of molecular subunits, which endows these SPs with extraordinary properties and functions. However, this internal order has not yet been exploited to generate and dynamically control well-defined higher-order (secondary) conformations of the SP backbone, which may induce functionality that is comparable to protein folding/unfolding. Herein, we report light-induced conformational changes of SPs based on the 1D exotic stacking of hydrogen-bonded azobenzene hexamers. The stacking causes a unique internal order that leads to spontaneous curvature, which allows accessing conformations that range from randomly folded to helically folded coils. The reversible photoisomerization of the azobenzene moiety destroys or recovers the curvature of the main chain, which demonstrates external control over the SP conformation that may ultimately lead to biological functions.

Intricately designed π-conjugated molecules containing interactive groups can be used to generate supramolecular polymers with outstanding structural and functional properties. To construct such supramolecular polymers, the non-covalent synthesis of supermacrocyclic monomers from relatively simple molecules represents an attractive strategy, although this has been rarely exploited. Here, we report the supramolecular polymerization of two barbiturate-naphthalene derivatives that circularly hexamerize by hydrogen bonding. The two molecules contain an aliphatic "wedge" unit with either an ether or ester linkage. This subtle difference is amplified into distinct features both in terms of the morphology of the supramolecular polymers and the polymerization process. The degrees of conformational freedom of the wedge unit determine the stacking of the supermacrocycles, as is evident from 2D X-ray diffraction analyses on the aligned fibers. The differences in stacking impart the supramolecular polymer fibers with different morphological features (cylindrical or helical), which are reflected in the properties of concentrated solutions (suspension or gel). The degrees of conformational freedom of the wedge unit also affect the polymerization kinetics, in which the more flexible ether linkage induces pathway complexity by the formation of off-pathway aggregates., (© 2017 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. An alkylene-tethered perylene bisimide (PBI) dyad with hydrophilic substituents forms helical supramolecular polymers that can be visualized by AFM in THF-water mixtures. The supramolecular polymers also form thixotropic gel-like lyotropic mesophases in the mixtures.

Water in carbon nanotubes is surrounded by hydrophobic carbon surfaces and shows anomalous structural and fast transport properties. However, the dynamics of water in hydrophobic nanospaces is only phenomenologically understood. In this study, water dynamics in hydrophobic carbon nanotubes is evaluated based on water relaxation using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations. Extremely fast relaxation (0.001 s) of water confined in carbon nanotubes of 1 nm in diameter on average is observed; the relaxation times of water confined in carbon nanotubes with an average diameter of 2 nm (0.40 s) is similar to that of bulk water (0.44 s). The extremely fast relaxation time of water confined in carbon nanotubes with an average diameter of 1 nm is a result of frequent energy transfer between water and carbon surfaces. Water relaxation in carbon nanotubes of average diameter 2 nm is slow because of the limited number of collisions between water molecules. A double-step CO2 sorption by [Cu(4,4'-bpy)2(BF4)2] (ELM-11) was observed during isothermal measurements at 195, 253, 273, and 298 K and was accompanied by interlayer expansion in the layered structure of ELM-11. The first step occurred in the range of the relative pressure (P/P0) from 10(-3) to 10(-2). The second step was observed at P/P0 ≈ 0.3 at the four temperatures. Structural changes in ELM-11 during the CO2 sorption process were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. The structural change for the first step was well understood from a detailed structural analysis, as reported previously. The XRD results showed further expansion of the layers during the second step as compared to the already expanded structure in the first step, and both steps were found to be caused by the gate phenomenon. The energy for the expansion of the layer structure was estimated from experimental and simulated data.

Helium at low temperatures has unique quantum properties such as superfluidity, which causes it to behave differently from a classical fluid. Despite our deep understanding of quantum mechanics, there are many open questions concerning the properties of quantum fluids in nanoscale systems. Herein, the quantum behavior of helium transportation through one-dimensional nanopores was evaluated by measuring the adsorption of quantum helium in the nanopores of single-walled carbon nanohorns and AlPO4-5 at 2-5 K. Quantum helium was transported unimpeded through nanopores larger than 0.7 nm in diameter, whereas quantum helium transportation was significantly restricted through 0.4-nm and 0.6-nm nanopores. Conversely, nitrogen molecules diffused through the 0.4-nm nanopores at 77 K. Therefore, quantum helium behaved as a fluid comprising atoms larger than 0.4-0.6 nm. This phenomenon was remarkable, considering that helium is the smallest existing element with a (classical) size of approximately 0.27 nm. This finding revealed the presence of significant quantum fluctuations. Quantum fluctuation determined the behaviors of quantum flux and is essential to understanding unique quantum behaviors in nanoscale systems.

Incoherent neutron scattering by water confined in carbon nanohorns was measured with the backscattering spectrometer SPHERES and analyzed in exemplary breadth and depth. Quasielastic spectra admit δ-plus-Kohlrausch fits over a wide q and T range. From the q and T dependence of fitted amplitudes and relaxation times, however, it becomes clear that the fits do not represent a uniform physical process, but that there is a crossover from localized motion at low T to diffusive α relaxation at high T. The crossover temperature of about 210 to 230 K increases with decreasing wave number, which is incompatible with a thermodynamic strong-fragile transition. Extrapolated diffusion coefficients D(T) indicate that water motion is at room temperature about 2.5 times slower than in the bulk; in the supercooled state this factor becomes smaller. At even higher temperatures, where the α spectrum is essentially flat, a few percentages of the total scattering go into a Lorentzian with a width of about 1.6μeV, probably due to functional groups on the surface of the nanohorns.

The supramolecular design of photochromic molecules has produced various smart molecular assemblies that can switch their structures and/or functions in response to light stimuli. However, most of these assemblies require large structural changes of the photochromic molecules for an efficient conversion of assembled states, which often suppresses the photoreactivity within the self-assemblies. Here we report molecular assemblies, based on a photo-cross-linkable chromophoric dyad, in which a small amount of ultraviolet-generated photochemical product can guide the entire system into different assembly processes. In apolar solution, the intact dyad self-assembles into right-handed superhelical fibrils. On ultraviolet-irradiation of these fibrils, an effective photoreaction affords a sole photo-cross-linked product. When right-handed helical fibrils, containing a minor amount of the photoproduct, are thermally reconstructed, the intact molecule and the photoproduct undergo a co-assembly process that furnishes superhelical fibrils with different molecular packing structures. This molecular design principle should afford new paradigms for smart molecular assemblies.

SF6 and SF6-N2 mixed gases are used widely as insulators, but such gases have high greenhouse gas potential. The separation of SF6 from SF6-N2 mixed gases is an inevitable result of their use. Single-walled carbon nanohorns (CNHs) were used here for a fundamental study of the separation of SF6 and N2. The diameters of the interstitial and internal nanopores of the CNHs were 0.7 and 2.9 nm, respectively. The high selectivity of SF6 over N2 was observed only in the low-pressure regime in the interstitial 0.7 nm nanopores; the selectively was significantly decreased at higher pressures. In contrast, the high selectivity was maintained over the entire pressure range in the internal 2.9-nm nanopores. These results showed that the wide carbon nanopores were efficient for the separation of SF6 from the mixed gas.

The behavior of water at hydrophobic interfaces can play a significant role in determining chemical reaction outcomes and physical properties. Carbon nanotubes and aluminophosphate materials have one-dimensional hydrophobic channels, which are entirely surrounded by hydrophobic interfaces. Unique water behavior was observed in such hydrophobic channels. In this article, changes in the water affinity in one-dimensional hydrophobic channels were assessed using water vapor adsorption isotherms at 303 K and grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. Hydrophobic behavior of water adsorbed in channels wider than 3 nm was observed for both adsorption and desorption processes, owing to the hydrophobic environment. However, water showed hydrophilic properties in both adsorption and desorption processes in channels narrower than 1 nm. In intermediate-sized channels, the hydrophobic properties of water during the adsorption process were seen to transition to hydrophilic behavior during the desorption process. Hydrophilic properties in the narrow channels for both adsorption and desorption processes are a result of the relatively strong water-channel interactions (10-15 kJ mol(-1)). In the 2-3 nm channels, the water-channel interaction energy of 4-5 kJ mol(-1) was comparable to the thermal translational energy. The cohesive water interaction was approximately 35 kJ mol(-1), which was larger than the others. Thus, the water affinity change in the 2-3 nm channels for the adsorption and desorption processes was attributed to weak water-channel interactions and strong cohesive interactions. These results are inherently important to control the properties of water in hydrophobic environments.

Graphene is possibly the thinnest membrane that could be used as a molecular separation gate. Several techniques including absorption, cryogenic distillation, adsorption, and membrane separation have been adopted for constructing separation systems. Molecular separation using graphene as the membrane has been studied because large area synthesis of graphene is possible by chemical vapor deposition. Control of the gate sizes is necessary to achieve high separation performances in graphene membranes. The separation of molecules and ions using graphene and graphene oxide layers could be achieved by the intrinsic defects and defect donation of graphene. However, the controllability of the graphene gates is still under debate because gate size control at the picometer level is inevitable for the fabrication of the thinnest graphene membranes. In this paper, the controlled gate size in the graphene sheets in single-walled carbon nanohorns (NHs) is studied and the molecular separation ability of the graphene sheets is assessed by molecular probing with CO2, O2, N2, CH4, and SF6. Graphene sheets in NHs with different sized gates of 310, 370, and >500 pm were prepared and assessed by molecular probing. The 310 pm-gates in the graphene sheets could separate the molecules tested, whereas weak separation properties were observed for 370 pm-gates. The amount of CO2 that penetrated the 310 pm-gates was more than 35 times larger than that of CH4. These results were supported by molecular dynamics simulations of the penetration of molecules through 300, 400, and 700 pm-gates in graphene sheets. Therefore, a gas separation membrane using a 340-pm-thick graphene sheet has high potential. These findings provide unambiguous evidence of the importance of graphene gates on the picometer level. Control of the gates is the primary challenge for high-performance separation membranes made of graphene.

Water surrounded by hydrophobic interfaces affects a variety of chemical reactions and biological activities. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can be used to investigate the behavior of water at hydrophobic interfaces. Here, we determined the fundamental unit of water by evaluating the ice-like cluster formation of water in the limited hydrophobic nanospaces of CNTs, using X-ray diffraction and molecular simulation analysis. The water in CNTs with a diameter of 1 nm had fewer hydrogen bonds than bulk water under ambient conditions. In CNTs with diameters of 2 and 3 nm, water formed nanoclusters even under ambient conditions, because of prolific hydrogen bonding; predominant ice-like cluster formation was induced in the 2-3 nm nanospaces. The results confirming the cluster formation in the CNTs also demonstrated that the critical cluster size was 0.8-3.4 nm. We report a combined experimental (X-ray diffraction) and theoretical (molecular dynamics, hybrid density functional theory) study of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [C2C1MIM][Cl], inside carbon nanotubes (CNTs). We show that despite its huge viscosity [C2C1MIM][Cl] readily penetrates into 1-3 nm wide CNTs at slightly elevated temperatures (323-363 K). Molecular simulations were used to assign atom-atom peaks. Experimental and simulated structures of RTIL inside CNT and in bulk phase are in good agreement. We emphasize a special role of the CNT-chloride interactions in the successful adsorption of [C2C1MIM][Cl] on the inner sidewalls of 1-3 nm carbon nanotubes.

An understanding of the structure and behavior of electrolyte solutions in nanoenvironements is crucial not only for a wide variety of applications, but also for the development of physical, chemical, and biological processes. We demonstrate the structure and stability of electrolyte in carbon nanotubes using hybrid reverse Monte Carlo simulations of X-ray diffraction patterns. Hydrogen bonds between water are adequately formed in carbon nanotubes, although some hydrogen bonds are restricted by the interfaces of carbon nanotubes. The hydrogen bonding network of water in electrolyte in the carbon nanotubes is further weakened. On the other hand, formation of the ion hydration shell is significantly enhanced in the electrolyte in the carbon nanotubes in comparison to ion hydration in bulk electrolyte. Organogels: Dimerization of perylene bisimide dyes through an oligomethylene linker enabled the facile control over columnar and lamellar self-organized architectures by an odd/even effect with respect to the number of methylene groups. The hydration structure of NaCl aqueous solution was elucidated in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the basis of canonical ensemble Monte Carlo simulations. Hydration shells were preferentially formed even in narrow CNTs to gain stabilization energy, whereas hydrogen bonding between water molecules in such CNTs was sacrificed. Nanoscale-confined aqueous electrolyte solutions therefore prioritize hydration shell formation between ions and water rather than hydrogen-bond formation between water molecules.

Water in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) displays unique behaviors such as ring-like structure formation, anomalous hydrogen bonds, and fast transportation. We demonstrated the structures and stability of water in loading and release processes using a combination of X-ray diffraction analysis and hybrid reverse Monte Carlo simulations. Water formed nanoclusters in water loading, whereas layered structures were formed in water release. The water nanoclusters formed in water loading were well stabilized in CNTs. In contrast, in water release, the water layers were less stable than the water nanoclusters. The significant stabilization of nanoclusters in water loading and the relatively low stability of water layers in water release suggest easy water loading and release through CNTs, providing sequential water transportation through CNTs.

Electron density of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) is effectively modified by hexaiodobenzene (HIB) molecules using liquid-phase adsorption. UV-Vis-NIR absorption spectra of the HIB-adsorbed SWCNT, especially in the NIR region, showed a disappearance of S 11 transitions between the V1 valance band and the C1 conduction band of van Hove singularities which can be attributed to the effective charge transfer between HIB and the SWCNT. The adsorption of HIB also caused significant peak-shifts (lower frequency shift around 170 cm -1 and higher shift around 186 cm ‑1 ) and an intensity change (around 100-150 cm -1 and 270-290 cm -1 ) in the radial breathing mode of Raman spectra. The charge transfer from SWCNT to HIB was further confirmed by the change in the C1s peak of X-ray photoelectron spectrum, revealing the oxidation of carbon in SWCNT upon HIB adsorption.

Water plays an important role in controlling chemical reactions and bioactivities. For example, water transportation through water channels in a biomembrane is a key factor in bioactivities. However, molecular-level mechanisms of water transportation are as yet unknown. Here, we investigate water transportation through narrow and wide one-dimensional (1D) channels on the basis of water-vapor adsorption rates and those determined by molecular dynamics simulations. We observed that water in narrow 1D channels was transported 3-5 times faster than that in wide 1D channels, although the narrow 1D channels provide fewer free nanospaces for water transportation. This rapid transportation is attributed to the formation of fewer hydrogen bonds between water molecules adsorbed in narrow 1D channels. The water-transportation mechanism provides the possibility of rapid communication through 1D channels and will be useful in controlling reactions and activities in water systems.

We report a precise control over the hierarchy levels in the outstanding self-organization process shown by chiral azobenzene dimer 1. This compound forms uniform toroidal nanostructures that can hierarchically organize into chiral nanotubes under the control by temperature, concentration, or light. The nanotubes further organized into supercoiled fibrils, which finally intertwined to form double helices with one-handed helical sense.

For the practical use of activated carbon (AC) as an adsorbent of CH(4) , tightly packed monoliths with high microporosity are supposed to be one of the best morphologies in terms of storage capacity per apparent volume of the adsorbent material. However, monolith-type ACs may cause diffusion obstacles in adsorption processes owing to their necked pore structures among the densely packed particles, which result in a lower adsorption performance than that of the corresponding powder ACs. To clarify the relationship between the pore structure and CH₄ adsorptivity, microscopic observations, structural studies on the nanoscale, and conductivity measurements (thermal and electrical) were performed on recently developed binder-free, self-sinterable ACs in both powder and monolithic forms. The monolith samples exhibited higher surface areas and electrical conductivities than the corresponding powder samples. Supercritical CH₄ adsorption isotherms were measured for each powder and monolith sample at up to 7 MPa at 263, 273, and 303 K to elucidate their isosteric heats of adsorption and adsorption rate constants, which revealed that the morphologies of the monolith samples did not cause serious drawbacks for the adsorption and desorption processes. Nanoscale confined electrolyte solutions are frequently observed, specifically in electrochemistry and biochemistry. However, the mechanism and structure of such electrolyte solutions are not well understood. We investigated the structure of aqueous electrolyte solutions in the internal nanospaces of single-walled carbon nanotubes, using synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The intermolecular distance between the water molecules in the electrolyte solution was increased because of anomalously strong hydration shell formation. Water correlation was further weakened at second-neighbor or longer distances. The anomalous hydrogen-bonding structure improves our understanding of electrolyte solutions in nanoenvironments.

The role of surface functionality on silica and carbonaceous materials for adsorption of cadmium(II) was examined using various mesoporous silica and activated carbon. Silica surfaces were principally functionalized by mono-amino- and mercapto-groups, while carboxylic group was introduced to the activated carbons by oxidation. Functional groups on silica surface were formed using grafting and co-condensation techniques in their preparation. Mono-amino group was found more effective than di- and tri-amino groups for cadmium(II) adsorption on the grafted silica. Mono-amino groups prepared by co-condensation adsorbed cadmium(II) as much as 0.25mmol/g compared to mercapto- and carboxyl-groups which adsorbed around 0.12mmol/g, whereas Langmuir adsorption affinities were as strong as 50-60L/mmol for all of the three functions. The working pH range was wider for mercapto- and carboxyl-functions than for amino-group. Basic site could be an adsorption center for amino-functional groups while ion exchange sites were found to work for the mercapto- and carboxyl-functions to adsorb cadmium(II) from aqueous phase. Transitional metals (M) were dispersed on single-wall carbon nanohorns (M/SWCNHs, M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) by simple thermal treatment of the deposited metal nitrate without H(2) reduction. Nanometallic Ni particles on SWCNH were evidenced by high-resolution transmission electron microscopic observation and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The nano-Ni dispersed on SWCNH showed the highest CH(4) decomposition activity; the activity of used transitional metals decreases in the order Ni ≫ Co > Fe ≫ Cu. On the other hand, the reaction rate over Ni/SWCNH was much larger than that over Ni/Al(2)O(3), and the former provided CO(x)-free H(2) and cup-stacked carbon nanotubes, while Ni/Al(2)O(3) produced CO(x) in addition to H(2). SWCNH was superior to Al(2)O(3) as the catalyst support of Ni for the CH(4) decomposition reaction.

Graphene has become a primary material in nanotechnology and has a wide range of potential applications in electronics. Fabricated graphenes are generally nanosized and composed of stacked graphene layers. The edges of nanographenes predominantly influence the chemical and physical properties because nanographene layers have a large number of edges. We demonstrated the edge effects of nanographenes and discrimination against basal planes in molecular adsorption using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. The edge sites of nanographene layers have relatively strong Coulombic interactions as a result of the partial charges at the edges, but the basal planes rarely have Coulombic interactions. CO2 and N2 prefer to be adsorbed on the edge sites and basal planes, respectively. As a result of these different preferences, the separation ability of CO2 is higher than that of N2 in the low-pressure region, thereby offering selective adsorptions, reactions, and separations on nanographene edges.

We introduce a way to selectively probe local vibration modes at nanostructured asperities such as tips of carbon nanohorns. Our observations benefit from signal amplification in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) at sites near a silver surface. We observe nanohorn tip vibration modes in the range 200-500 cm(-1), which are obscured in regular Raman spectra. Ab initio density functional calculations assign modes in this frequency range to local vibrations at the nanohorn cap resembling the radial breathing mode of fullerenes. Careful interpretation of our SERS spectra indicates presence of caps with 5 or 6 pentagons, which are chemically the most active sites. We synthesized two high-pressure polymorphs PbNiO(3) with different structures, a perovskite-type and a LiNbO(3)-type structure, and investigated their formation behavior, detailed structure, structural transformation, thermal stability, valence state of cations, and magnetic and electronic properties. A perovskite-type PbNiO(3) synthesized at 800 °C under a pressure of 3 GPa crystallizes as an orthorhombic GdFeO(3)-type structure with a space group Pnma. The reaction under high pressure was monitored by an in situ energy dispersive X-ray diffraction experiment, which revealed that a perovskit-type phase was formed even at 400 °C under 3 GPa. The obtained perovskite-type phase irreversibly transforms to a LiNbO(3)-type phase with an acentric space group R3c by heat treatment at ambient pressure. The Rietveld structural refinement using synchrotron X-ray diffraction data and the XPS measurement for both the perovskite- and the LiNbO(3)-type phases reveal that both phases possess the valence state of Pb(4+)Ni(2+)O(3). Perovskite-type PbNiO(3) is the first example of the Pb(4+)M(2+)O(3) series, and the first example of the perovskite containing a tetravalent A-site cation without lone pair electrons. The magnetic susceptibility measurement shows that the perovskite- and LiNbO(3)-type PbNiO(3) undergo antiferromagnetic transition at 225 and 205 K, respectively. Both the perovskite- and LiNbO(3)-type phases exhibit semiconducting behavior.

Graphene and graphitic nanoribbons possess different types of carbon hybridizations exhibiting different chemical activity. In particular, the basal plane of the honeycomb lattice of nanoribbons consisting of sp(2)-hybridized carbon atoms is chemically inert. Interestingly, their bare edges could be more reactive as a result of the presence of extra unpaired electrons, and for multilayer graphene nanoribbons, the presence of terraces and ripples could introduce additional chemical activity. In this study, a remarkable irreversibility in adsorption of CO(2) and H(2)O on graphitic nanoribbons was observed at ambient temperature, which is distinctly different from the behavior of nanoporous carbon and carbon blacks. We also noted that N(2) molecules strongly interact with the basal planes at 77 K in comparison with edges. The irreversible adsorptions of both CO(2) and H(2)O are due to the large number of sp(3)-hybridized carbon atoms located at the edges. The observed irreversible adsorptivity of the edge surfaces of graphitic nanoribbons for CO(2) and H(2)O indicates a high potential in the fabrication of novel types of catalysts and highly selective gas sensors.

An outstanding compression function for materials preparation exhibited by nanospaces of single-walled carbon nanohorns (SWCNHs) was studied using the B1-to-B2 solid phase transition of KI crystals at 1.9 GPa. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron X-ray diffraction examinations provided evidence that KI nanocrystals doped in the nanotube spaces of SWCNHs at pressures below 0.1 MPa had the super-high-pressure B2 phase structure, which is induced at pressures above 1.9 GPa in bulk KI crystals. This finding of the supercompression function of the carbon nanotubular spaces can lead to the development of a new compression-free route to precious materials whose syntheses require the application of high pressure.

Selective synthetic routes to coordination polymers [Cu(bpy)(2)(OTf)(2)](n) (bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine, OTf = trifluoromethanesulfonate) with 2- and 3-dimensionalities of the frameworks were established by properly choosing each different solvent-solution system. They show a quite similar local coordination environment around the Cu(II) centers, but these assemble in a different way leading to the 2D and 3D building-up structures. Although the two kinds of porous coordination polymers (PCPs) both have flexible frameworks, the 2D shows more marked flexibility than the 3D, giving rise to different flexibility-associated gas adsorption behaviors. All adsorption isotherms for N(2), CO(2), and Ar on the 3D PCP are of type I, whereas the 2D PCP has stepwise gas adsorption isotherms, also for CH(4) and water, in addition to these gases. The 3D structure, having hydrophilic and hydrophobic pores, shows the size-selective and quadrupole-surface electrical field interaction dependent adsorption. Remarkably, the 2D structure can accommodate greater amounts of gas molecules than that corresponding to the inherent crystallographic void volume through framework structural changes. In alcohol adsorption isotherms, however, the 2D PCP changes its framework structure through the guest accommodation, leading to no stepwise adsorption isotherms. The structural diversity of the 2D PCP stems from the breathing phenomenon and expansion/shrinkage modulation.

Water adsorption hysteresis is one of the most important phenomena observed during the interaction of water with hydrophobic surfaces. Adsorption hysteresis in micropores has strong relevance to the structure of adsorbed water. We used three typical models (cluster, monolayer, and uniform distribution structure models) to determine the structure of the water molecules adsorbed in hydrophobic slit-shaped carbon micropores. In each model, stabilization energy profiles were calculated for various fractional fillings by using the interaction potential theory. Simultaneously, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of water adsorbed in the micropore of 1.1 nm pore width, which shows significant adsorption hysteresis, were performed to determine the kinetics of the observed structural transformations. The transformations between monolayer and cluster were slow, that is, kinetically forbidden at the fractional filling of 0.2 and 0.6, whereas the cluster-uniform distribution structure and uniform distribution structure-monolayer transformations were kinetically allowed. It is important to tune the sorption behavior of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials. Ethanol treatment on the hydrated form of [Cu(bpy)(2)(BF(4))(2)], which is a representative flexible MOF showing the fascinating gate phenomenon on CO(2) sorption, induces an easier dehydration and a significant decrease in the CO(2) gate pressure. The results of IR, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements indicated that water molecules in the lattice of the hydrated form can be removed even at room temperature after the ethanol treatment and the basic 2D layered structure remains with a slight interlayer expansion. The results of thermogravimetric (TG) and gas chromatograph/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analyses and of CO(2) sorptions indicated that the change of the gate phenomenon was caused by a trace of residual ethanol molecules included in the structure. Similar phenomena were observed on alcohols with different polarity and molecular size.

The quasi-Werner-type copper(II) complex, [Cu(PF(6))(2)(4-mepy)(4)] (1), in which 4-mepy is the 4-methylpyridine ligand, has flexible and polar axial bonds of Cu-PF(6). Flexibility of the Cu-PF(6) bonds induces diverse and unprecedented guest-inclusion structures, such as {[Cu(PF(6))(2)(4-mepy)(4)][Cu(PF(6))(4-mepy)(4)(acetone)]·PF(6)·4acetone} (γ-1⊃2.5acetone), {[Cu(PF(6))(2)(4-mepy)(4)][Cu(PF(6))(4-mepy)(4)(2-butanone)]·PF(6)·3.5(2-butanone)} (γ-1⊃2.25(2-butanone)), {[Cu(PF(6))(2)(4-mepy)(4)][Cu(PF(6))(4-mepy)(4)(H(2)O)]·PF(6)·4benzene} (γ-1⊃0.5H(2)O·2benzene), and {[Cu(PF(6))(2)(4-mepy)(4)]·2benzene} (γ-1⊃2benzene). Exposure of the dense form, α-1, to benzene vapor affords the benzene-inclusion complex {[Cu(PF(6))(2)(4-mepy)(4)]·2benzene} (γ-1⊃2benzene), all benzene guests of which are easily removed by vacuum drying, reforming guest-free, dense α-1' with smaller sized crystals than α-1. In contrast to α-1, which shows almost no CO(2) adsorption, α-1' adsorbs CO(2) gas with structural transformations, this being the first example that exhibits adsorption of gas in a dense Werner-type complex and a drastic change in adsorption properties depending on the size of the crystals.

Vibrational-rotational properties of CH(4) adsorbed on the nanopores of single-wall carbon nanohorns (SWCNHs) at 105-140 K were investigated using IR spectroscopy. The difference vibrational-rotational bands of the ν(3) and ν(4) modes below 130 K show suppression of the P and R branches, while the Q branches remain. The widths of the Q branches are much narrower than in the bulk gas phase due to suppression of the Doppler effect. These results indicate that the rotation of CH(4) confined in the nanospaces of SWCNHs is highly restricted, resulting in a rigid assembly structure, which is an anomaly in contrast to that in the bulk liquid phase.

A two-dimensional flexible porous coordination polymer (2D-PCP) that shows expansion/shrinkage structural transformation accompanied by molecular accommodation was synthesized by control of dimensionality in zero-dimensional and one-dimensional PCPs: The dynamic structural transformation cooperatively proceeds in the solid state with a drastic molecular rearrangement. Kinetics of the structural transformation was investigated.
