Cu(In, Ga)S 2 demonstrates potential as a top cell material for tandem solar cells. However, achieving high efficiencies has been impeded by open-circuit voltage (V OC ) deficits arising from In-rich and Ga-rich composition segregation in the absorber layer. This study presents a significant improvement in the optoelectronic quality of Cu(In, Ga)S 2 films through the mitigation of composition segregation in three-stage co-evaporated films. By elevating the substrate temperature during the first stage, the intermixing of In and Ga is promoted, leading to reduced Cu(In, Ga)S 2 composition segregation. Furthermore, the optimization of Cu-excess during the second stage minimizes non-radiative voltage loss. These combined strategies yield quasi-Fermi level splitting exceeding 1 eV and a record V OC of 981 mV in Cu(In, Ga)S 2 devices. Consequently, a champion device achieves an in-house power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.1% (active area) and a certified PCE of 14.8%, highlighting the potential of Cu(In, Ga)S 2 as a stable and efficient top-cell device for tandem photovoltaics., (© 2025 The Author(s). Thick metamorphic buffers are considered indispensable for III-V semiconductor heteroepitaxy on large lattice and thermal-expansion mismatched silicon substrates. However, III-nitride buffers in conventional GaN-on-Si high electron mobility transistors (HEMT) impose a substantial thermal resistance, deteriorating device efficiency and lifetime by throttling heat extraction. To circumvent this, a systematic methodology for the direct growth of GaN after the AlN nucleation layer on six-inch silicon substrates is demonstrated using metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE). Crucial growth-stress modulation to prevent epilayer cracking is achieved even without buffers, and threading dislocation densities comparable to those in buffered structures are realized. The buffer-less design yields a GaN-to-substrate thermal resistance of (11 ± 4) m 2  K GW -1 , an order of magnitude reduction over conventional GaN-on-Si and one of the lowest on any non-native substrate. As-grown AlGaN/AlN/GaN heterojunctions on this template show a high-quality 2D electron gas (2DEG) whose room-temperature Hall-effect mobility exceeds 2000 cm 2  V -1  s -1 , rivaling the best-reported values. As further validation, the low-temperature magnetoresistance of this 2DEG shows clear Shubnikov-de-Haas oscillations, a quantum lifetime > 0.180 ps, and tell-tale signatures of spin-splitting. This study examines the exciton dynamics in InGaN/GaN core-shell nanorods using time-resolved cathodoluminescence (TRCL), which provides nanometer-scale lateral spatial and tens of picoseconds temporal resolutions. The focus is on thick (>20 nm) InGaN layers on the non-polar, semi-polar and polar InGaN facets, which are accessible for study due to the unique nanorod geometry. Spectrally integrated TRCL decay transients reveal distinct recombination behaviours across these facets, indicating varied exciton lifetimes. By extracting fast and slow lifetime components and observing their temperature trends along with those of the integrated and peak intensity, the differences in behaviour were linked to variations in point defect density and the degree and density of localisation centres in the different regions. Further analysis shows that the non-polar and polar regions demonstrate increasing lifetimes with decreasing emission energy, attributed to an increase in the depth of localisation. Nonribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs) are responsible for the production of important biologically active peptides. The large, multidomain NRPSs operate through an assembly line strategy in which the growing peptide is tethered to carrier domains that deliver the intermediates to neighboring catalytic domains. While most NRPS domains catalyze standard chemistry of amino acid activation, peptide bond formation, and product release, some canonical NRPS catalytic domains promote unexpected chemistry. The paradigm monobactam antibiotic sulfazecin is produced through the activity of a terminal thioesterase domain of SulM, which catalyzes an unusual β-lactam-forming reaction in which the nitrogen of the C-terminal N-sulfo-2,3-diaminopropionate residue attacks its thioester tether to release the monobactam product. We have determined the structure of the thioesterase domain as both a free-standing domain and a didomain complex with the upstream holo peptidyl-carrier domain. The position of variant lid helices results in an active site pocket that is quite constrained, a feature that is likely necessary to orient the substrate properly for β-lactam formation. Modeling of a sulfazecin tripeptide into the active site identifies a plausible binding mode identifying potential interactions for the sulfamate and the peptide backbone with Arg2849 and Asn2819, respectively. The overall structure is similar to the β-lactone-forming thioesterase domain that is responsible for similar ring closure in the production of obafluorin. The decrease in emission efficiency with increasing drive current density, known as 'droop', of c -plane wurtzite InGaN/GaN quantum wells presently limits the use of light-emitting diodes based on them for high brightness lighting applications. InGaN/GaN quantum wells grown in the alternative zincblende phase are free of the strong polarisation fields that exacerbate droop and so were investigated by excitation-dependent photoluminescence and photoreflectance studies. Polarisation-resolved measurements revealed that for all excitation densities studied the emission from such samples largely originates from similar microstructures or combinations of microstructures that form within the quantum well layers. Emission efficiency varies significantly with excitation at 10 K showing that non-radiative recombination processes are important even at low temperature. The onset of efficiency droop, as determined by photomodulated reflection measurements, occurred at a carrier density of around 1.2 × 10 20 cm -3 - an order of magnitude greater than the value reported for a reference wurtzite quantum well sample using the same method. The high carrier density droop onset combined with the much shorter carrier lifetime within zincblende InGaN/GaN quantum wells indicate they have the potential to effectively delay efficiency droop when used in GaN based light-emitting diodes. However, the material quality of the quantum well layers need to be improved by preventing the formation of microstructures within these layers, and the importance of the role played by non-radiative centres in the QW layer needs to be elucidated, to fully realise the material's potential.

Zincblende GaN has the potential to improve the efficiency of green- and amber-emitting nitride light emitting diodes due to the absence of internal polarisation fields. However, high densities of stacking faults are found in current zincblende GaN structures. This study presents a cathodoluminescence spectroscopy investigation into the low-temperature optical behaviour of a zincblende GaN/InGaN single quantum well structure. In panchromatic cathodoluminescence maps, stacking faults are observed as dark stripes, and are associated with non-radiative recombination centres. Furthermore, power dependent studies were performed to address whether the zincblende single quantum well exhibited a reduction in emission efficiency at higher carrier densities-the phenomenon known as efficiency droop. The single quantum well structure was observed to exhibit droop, and regions with high densities of stacking faults were seen to exacerbate this phenomenon. Overall, this study suggests that achieving efficient emission from zinc-blende GaN/InGaN quantum wells will require reduction in the stacking fault density., (Creative Commons Attribution license.)

Bright and efficient deep-red light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are important for applications in medical therapy and biological imaging due to the high penetration of deep-red photons into human tissues. Metal-halide perovskites have potential to achieve bright and efficient electroluminescence due to their favorable optoelectronic properties. However, efficient and bright perovskite-based deep-red LEDs have not been achieved yet, due to either Auger recombination in low-dimensional perovskites or trap-assisted nonradiative recombination in 3D perovskites. Here, a lateral Cs 4 PbI 6 /FA x Cs 1- x PbI 3 (0D/3D) heterostructure that can enable efficient deep-red perovskite LEDs at very high brightness is demonstrated. The Cs 4 PbI 6 can facilitate the growth of low-defect FA x Cs 1- x PbI 3 , and act as low-refractive-index grids, which can simultaneously reduce nonradiative recombination and enhance light extraction. This device reaches a peak external quantum efficiency of 21.0% at a photon flux of 1.75 × 10 21 m -2 s -1 , which is almost two orders of magnitude higher than that of reported high-efficiency deep-red perovskite LEDs. Purpose: To evaluate the biological and biomechanical effects of fenestration/microdiscectomy in an in vivo rabbit model, and in doing so, create a preclinical animal model of IVDD., Methods: Lateral lumbar IVD fenestration was performed in vivo as single- (L3/4; n = 12) and multi-level (L2/3, L3/4, L4/5; n = 12) fenestration in skeletally mature 6-month-old New Zealand White rabbits. Radiographic, micro-CT, micro-MRI, non-destructive robotic range of motion, and histological evaluations were performed 6- and 12-weeks postoperatively. Independent t tests, one-way and two-way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used for parametric and nonparametric data, respectively. Statistical significance was set at P < 0.05., Results: All rabbits recovered uneventfully from surgery and ambulated normally. Radiographs and micro-CT demonstrated marked reactive proliferative osseous changes and endplate sclerosis at fenestrated IVDs. Range of motion at the fenestrated disc space was significantly reduced compared to intact controls at 6- and 12-weeks postoperatively (P < 0.05). Mean disc height index percentage for fenestrated IVDs was significantly lower than adjacent, non-operated IVDs for both single and multi-level groups, at 6 and 12 weeks (P < 0.001). Pfirrmann MRI IVDD and histological grading scores were significantly higher for fenestrated IVDs compared to non-operated adjacent and age-matched control IVDs for single and multi-level groups at 6 and 12 weeks (P < 0.001)., Conclusions: Fenestration, akin to microdiscectomy, demonstrated significant biological, and biomechanical effects in this in vivo rabbit model and warrants consideration by veterinary and human spine surgeons. In this article, porous GaN distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) were fabricated by epitaxy of undoped/doped multilayers followed by electrochemical etching. We present backscattered electron scanning electron microscopy (BSE-SEM) for sub-surface plan-view imaging, enabling efficient, non-destructive pore morphology characterization. In mesoporous GaN DBRs, BSE-SEM images the same branching pores and Voronoi-like domains as scanning transmission electron microscopy. In microporous GaN DBRs, micrographs were dominated by first porous layer features (45 nm to 108 nm sub-surface) with diffuse second layer (153 nm to 216 nm sub-surface) contributions. The optimum primary electron landing energy (LE) for image contrast and spatial resolution in a Zeiss GeminiSEM 300 was approximately 20 keV. BSE-SEM detects porosity ca. 295 nm sub-surface in an overgrown porous GaN DBR, yielding low contrast that is still first porous layer dominated. Imaging through a ca. 190 nm GaN cap improves contrast. We derived image contrast, spatial resolution, and information depth expectations from semi-empirical expressions. These theoretical studies echo our experiments as image contrast and spatial resolution can improve with higher LE, plateauing towards 30 keV. BSE-SEM is predicted to be dominated by the uppermost porous layer's uppermost region, congruent with experimental analysis. Joint replacements provide pain free movement for the injured or our aging population. Current prothesis mainly consist of hard metal on metal, or ceramic femoral head on ultra-high-molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). In this study, a rodent fracture model was used to test the influence of wear debris from a high-performance polymer (polyimide MP-1™). Saline, MP-1™ Low Dose in Saline (1%), or MP-1 High Dose (2%) in Saline was injected directly into a standard closed unilateral femoral fracture in 12-week old Sprague Dawley rats ( n  = 25) for 1, 3 and 6 weeks. Endpoints included radiography, micro-computed tomography, mechanical testing and paraffin histology. No adverse effects from the wear particles were observed from the current study based on radiology, mechanical or histological data. Although the particles were present, histological analysis revealed a progression in healing between the Polyimide treated groups and the non-treated saline control groups over the duration of 1, 3, and 6 weeks, with no inhibition from the particles. The MP-1™ wear debris generated are larger than 1 µm thus are not able to be engulfed by macrophages and cause osteolysis. Recent advancements in the fabrication of layered halide perovskites and their subsequent modification for optoelectronic applications have ushered in a need for innovative characterisation techniques. In particular, heterostructures containing multiple phases and consequently featuring spatially defined optoelectronic properties are very challenging to study. Here, we adopt an approach centered on cathodoluminescence, complemented by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy analysis. Cathodoluminescence enables assessment of local emission variations by injecting charges with a nanometer-scale electron probe, which we use to investigate emission changes in three different systems: PEA 2 PbBr 4 , PEA 2 PbI 4 and lateral heterostructures of the two, fabricated via halide substitution. We identify and map different emission bands that can be correlated with local chemical composition and geometry. One emission band is characteristic of bromine-based halide perovskite, while the other originates from iodine-based perovskite. The coexistence of these emissions bands in the halide-substituted sample confirms the formation of lateral heterostructures. To improve the signal quality of the acquired data, we employed multivariate analysis, specifically the non-negative matrix factorization algorithm, on both cathodoluminescence and compositional datasets. The scanning capacitance microscope (SCM) is a powerful tool to characterise local electrical properties in GaN-based high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) structures with nanoscale resolution. We investigated the experimental setup and the imaging conditions to optimise the SCM contrast. As to the experimental setup, we show that the desired tip should be sharp (e.g., with the tip radius of ≤25nm) and its coating should be made of conductive doped diamond. Most importantly, its spring constant should be large to achieve stable tip-sample contact. The selected tip should be positioned close to both the edge and Ohmic contact of the sample. Regarding the imaging conditions, we also show that a dc bias should be applied in addition to an ac bias because the latter alone is not sufficient to deplete the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in the AlGaN/GaN heterostructure. The approximate range of the effective dc bias values was found by measuring the local dC/dV-V curves, yielding, after further optimisation, two optimised dc bias values which provide strong, but opposite, SCM contrast. In comparison, the selected ac bias value has no significant impact on the SCM contrast. In this work, a technique for quantifying carbon doping concentrations in GaN:C/AlGaN buffer structures using cathodoluminescence (CL) is presented. The method stems from the knowledge that the blue and yellow luminescence intensity in CL spectra of GaN varies with the carbon doping concentration. By calculating the blue and yellow luminescence peak intensities normalised to the peak GaN near-band-edge intensity for GaN layers of known carbon concentrations, calibration curves that show the change in normalised blue and yellow luminescence intensity with carbon concentration in the 10 16 - 10 19 cm -3 range were derived at both room temperature and 10 K. The utility of such calibration curves was then examined by testing against an unknown sample containing multiple carbon-doped GaN layers. The results obtained from CL using the normalised blue luminescence calibration curves are in close agreement with those from secondary-ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS). However,the method fails when applying calibration curves obtained from the normalised yellow luminescence likely due to the influence of native V Ga defects acting in this luminescence region. Effective light extraction from optically active solid-state spin centers inside high-index semiconductor host crystals is an important factor in integrating these pseudo-atomic centers in wider quantum systems. Here, we report increased fluorescent light collection efficiency from laser-written nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in bulk diamond facilitated by micro-transfer printed GaN solid immersion lenses. Both laser-writing of NV centers and transfer printing of micro-lens structures are compatible with high spatial resolution, enabling deterministic fabrication routes toward future scalable systems development. The micro-lenses are integrated in a noninvasive manner, as they are added on top of the unstructured diamond surface and bonded by van der Waals forces. For emitters at 5 μm depth, we find approximately 2× improvement of fluorescent light collection using an air objective with a numerical aperture of NA = 0.95 in good agreement with simulations. Similarly, the solid immersion lenses strongly enhance light collection when using an objective with NA = 0.5, significantly improving the signal-to-noise ratio of the NV center emission while maintaining the NV's quantum properties after integration., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2023 The Authors. The high thermal conductivity of polycrystalline diamond makes it ideally suited for thermal management solutions for gallium nitride (GaN) devices, with a diamond layer grown on an aluminum nitride (AlN) interlayer atop the GaN stack. However, this application is limited by the thermal barrier at the interface between diamond and substrate, which has been associated with the transition region formed in the initial phases of growth. In this work, in situ spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) is employed to monitor early-stage microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition diamond growth on AlN. An optical model was developed from ex situ spectra and applied to spectra taken in situ during growth. Coalescence of separate islands into a single film was marked by a reduction in bulk void fraction prior to a spike in sp 2 fraction due to grain boundary formation. The internal quantum efficiency of (In,Ga)N/GaN quantum wells can surpass 90% for blue-emitting structures at moderate drive current densities but decreases significantly for longer emission wavelengths and at higher excitation rates. This latter effect is known as efficiency "droop" and limits the brightness of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on such quantum wells. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain efficiency droop including Auger recombination, both intrinsic and defect-assisted, carrier escape, and the saturation of localized states. However, it remains unclear which of these mechanisms is most important because it has proven difficult to reconcile theoretical calculations of droop with measurements. Here, we first present experimental photoluminescence measurements extending over three orders of magnitude of excitation for three samples grown at different temperatures that indicate that droop behavior is not dependent on the point defect density in the quantum wells studied. Second, we use an atomistic tight-binding electronic structure model to calculate localization-enhanced radiative and Auger rates and show that both the corresponding carrier density-dependent internal quantum efficiency and the carrier density decay dynamics are in excellent agreement with our experimental measurements. Moreover, we show that point defect density, Auger recombination, and the effect of the polarization field on recombination rates only limit the peak internal quantum efficiency to about 70% in the resonantly excited green-emitting quantum wells studied. Understanding the growth mechanisms of III-nitride nanowires is of great importance to realise their full potential. We present a systematic study of silane-assisted GaN nanowire growth on c -sapphire substrates by investigating the surface evolution of the sapphire substrates during the high temperature annealing, nitridation and nucleation steps, and the growth of GaN nanowires. The nucleation step - which transforms the AlN layer formed during the nitridation step to AlGaN - is critical for subsequent silane-assisted GaN nanowire growth. Both Ga-polar and N-polar GaN nanowires were grown with N-polar nanowires growing much faster than the Ga-polar nanowires. On the top surface of the N-polar GaN nanowires protuberance structures were found, which relates to the presence of Ga-polar domains within the nanowires. Detailed morphology studies revealed ring-like features concentric with the protuberance structures, indicating energetically favourable nucleation sites at inversion domain boundaries. Cathodoluminescence studies showed quenching of emission intensity at the protuberance structures, but the impact is limited to the protuberance structure area only and does not extend to the surrounding areas. 2H-Benzotriazol-2-ylethylammonium bromide and iodide and its difluorinated derivatives are synthesized and employed as interlayers for passivation of formamidinium lead triiodide (FAPbI 3 ) solar cells. In combination with PbI 2 and PbBr 2 , these benzotriazole derivatives form two-dimensional (2D) Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites (RPPs) as evidenced by their crystal structures and thin film characteristics. When used to passivate n-i-p FAPbI 3 solar cells, the power conversion efficiency improves from 20% to close to 22% by enhancing the open-circuit voltage. Quasi-Fermi level splitting experiments and scanning electron microscopy cathodoluminescence hyperspectral imaging reveal that passivation provides a reduced nonradiative recombination at the interface between the perovskite and hole transport layer. Photoluminescence spectroscopy, angle-resolved grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering, and depth profiling X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies of the 2D/three-dimensional (3D) interface between the benzotriazole RPP and FAPbI 3 show that a nonuniform layer of 2D perovskites is enough to passivate defects, enhance charge extraction, and decrease nonradiative recombination., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2023 The Authors. We demonstrate that semiconductor quantum dots can be excited efficiently in a resonant three-photon process, while resonant two-photon excitation is highly suppressed. Time-dependent Floquet theory is used to quantify the strength of the multiphoton processes and model the experimental results. The efficiency of these transitions can be drawn directly from parity considerations in the electron and hole wave functions in semiconductor quantum dots. Finally, we exploit this technique to probe intrinsic properties of InGaN quantum dots. In contrast to nonresonant excitation, slow relaxation of charge carriers is avoided, which allows us to measure directly the radiative lifetime of the lowest energy exciton states. Since the emission energy is detuned far from the resonant driving laser field, polarization filtering is not required and emission with a greater degree of linear polarization is observed compared to nonresonant excitation.

Existing barriers to efficient deep ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) may be reduced or overcome by moving away from conventional planar growth and toward three-dimensional nanostructuring. Nanorods have the potential for enhanced doping, reduced dislocation densities, improved light extraction efficiency, and quantum wells free from the quantum-confined Stark effect. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid top-down/bottom-up approach to creating highly uniform AlGaN core-shell nanorods on sapphire repeatable on wafer scales. Our GaN-free design avoids self-absorption of the quantum well emission while preserving electrical functionality. The effective junctions formed by doping of both the n-type cores and p-type caps were studied using nanoprobing experiments, where we find low turn-on voltages, strongly rectifying behaviors and significant electron-beam-induced currents. Time-resolved cathodoluminescence measurements find short carrier liftetimes consistent with reduced polarization fields. Our results show nanostructuring to be a promising route to deep-UV-emitting LEDs, achievable using commercially compatible methods.

The interface between the polymer and nanoparticle has a vital role in determining the overall dielectric properties of a dielectric polymer nanocomposite. In this study, a novel dielectric nanocomposite containing a high permittivity polymer, cyanoethylated cellulose (CRS) and TiO 2 nanoparticles surface modified by hydrogen plasma treatments was successfully prepared with different weight percentages (10%, 20% and 30%) of hydrogenated TiO 2 . Internal structure of H plasma treated TiO 2 nanoparticles (H-TiO 2 ) and the intermolecular interactions and morphology within the polymer nanocomposites were analysed. H-TiO 2 /CRS thin films on SiO 2 /Si wafers were used to form metal-insulator-metal (MIM) type capacitors. Capacitances and loss factors in the frequency range of 1 kHz to 1 MHz were measured. At 1 kHz H-TiO 2 /CRS nanocomposites exhibited ultra-high dielectric constants of 80, 118 and 131 for nanocomposites with 10%, 20% and 30% weight of hydrogenated TiO 2 respectively, significantly higher than values of pure CRS (21) and TiO 2 (41). Furthermore, all three H-TiO 2 /CRS nanocomposites show a loss factor <0.3 at 1 kHz and low leakage current densities (10 -6 A cm -2 -10 -7 A cm -2 ). Leakage was studied using conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM) and it was observed that the leakage is associated with H-TiO 2 nanoparticles embedded in the CRS polymer matrix. Although, modified interface slightly reduces energy densities compared to pristine TiO 2 /CRS system, the capacitance values for H-TiO 2 /CRS-in the voltage range of -2 V to 2 V are very stable. Whilst H-TiO 2 /CRS possesses ultra-high dielectric constants (>100), this study reveals that the polymer nanoparticle interface has a potential influence on dielectric behaviour of the composite.

The extension of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to measure layers and interfaces below the uppermost surface requires higher X-ray energies and electron energy analysers capable of measuring higher electron kinetic energies. This has been enabled at synchrotron radiation facilities and by using lab-based instruments which are now available with sufficient sensitivity for measurements to be performed on reasonable timescales. Here, we detail measurements on buried interfaces using a Ga Kα (9.25 keV) metal jet X-ray source and an EW4000 energy analyser (ScientaOmicron GmbH) in the Henry Royce Institute at the University of Manchester. Development of the technique has required the calculation of relative sensitivity factors (RSFs) to enable quantification analogous to Al Kα XPS, and here we provide further substantiation of the Ga Kα RSF library. Examples of buried interfaces include layers of memory and energy materials below top electrode layers, semiconductor heterostructures, ions implanted in graphite, oxide layers at metallic surfaces, and core-shell nanoparticles. The use of an angle-resolved mode enables depth profiling from the surface into the bulk, and is complemented with surface-sensitive XPS. Inelastic background modelling allows the extraction of information about buried layers at depths up to 20 times the photoelectron inelastic mean free path.

Mouse haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) first emerge at embryonic day 10.5 (E10.5), on the ventral surface of the dorsal aorta, by endothelial-to-haematopoietic transition. We investigated whether mesenchymal stem cells, which provide an essential niche for long-term HSCs (LT-HSCs) in the bone marrow, reside in the aorta-gonad-mesonephros and contribute to the development of the dorsal aorta and endothelial-to-haematopoietic transition. Here we show that mesoderm-derived PDGFRA + stromal cells (Mesp1 der PSCs) contribute to the haemogenic endothelium of the dorsal aorta and populate the E10.5-E11.5 aorta-gonad-mesonephros but by E13.5 were replaced by neural-crest-derived PSCs (Wnt1 der PSCs). Co-aggregating non-haemogenic endothelial cells with Mesp1 der PSCs but not Wnt1 der PSCs resulted in activation of a haematopoietic transcriptional programme in endothelial cells and generation of LT-HSCs. Dose-dependent inhibition of PDGFRA or BMP, WNT and NOTCH signalling interrupted this reprogramming event. A biphasic calcium phosphate with submicron needle-shaped surface topography combined with a novel polyethylene glycol/polylactic acid triblock copolymer binder (BCP-EP) was investigated in this study. This study aims to evaluate the composition, degradation mechanism and bioactivity of BCP-EP in vitro, and its in vivo performance as an autograft bone graft (ABG) extender in a rabbit Posterolateral Fusion (PLF) model. The characterization of BCP-EP and its in vitro degradation products showed that the binder hydrolyses rapidly into lactic acid, lactide oligomers and unaltered PEG (polyethylene glycol) without altering the BCP granules and their characteristic submicron needle-shaped surface topography. The bioactivity of BCP-EP after immersion in SBF revealed a progressive surface mineralization. In vivo, BCP-EP was assessed in a rabbit PLF model by radiography, manual palpation, histology and histomorphometry up to 12 weeks post-implantation. Twenty skeletally mature New Zealand (NZ) White Rabbits underwent single-level intertransverse process PLF surgery at L4/5 using (1) autologous bone graft (ABG) alone or (2) by mixing in a 1:1 ratio with BCP-EP (BCP-EP/ABG). After 3 days of implantation, histology showed the BCP granules were in direct contact with tissues and cells. After 12 weeks, material resorption and mature bone formation were observed, which resulted in solid fusion between the two transverse processes, following all assessment methods. BCP-EP/ABG showed comparable fusion rates with ABG at 12 weeks, and no graft migration or adverse reaction were noted at the implantation site nor in distant organs.

Time-resolved cathodoluminescence offers new possibilities for the study of semiconductor nanostructures - including defects. The versatile combination of time, spatial, and spectral resolution of the technique can provide new insights into the physics of carrier recombination at the nanoscale. Here, we used power-dependent cathodoluminescence and temperature-dependent time-resolved cathodoluminescence to study the carrier dynamics at trench defects in InGaN quantum wells - a defect commonly found in III-nitride structures. The measurements show that the emission properties of trench defects closely relate to the depth of the related basal plane stacking fault within the quantum well stack. The study of the variation of carrier decay time with detection energy across the emission spectrum provides strong evidence supporting the hypothesis that strain relaxation of the quantum wells enclosed within the trench promotes efficient radiative recombination even in the presence of an increased indium content. This result shines light on previously reported peculiar emission properties of the defect, and illustrates the use of cathodoluminescence as a powerful adaptable tool for the study of defects in semiconductors.

We have performed cross-sectional scanning capacitance microscopy (SCM), cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy in the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) all on the same few-micron region of a GaN/sapphire sample. To achieve this, it was necessary to develop a process flow which allowed the same features viewed in a cleaved cross-section to be traced from one microscope to the next and to adapt the focused ion beam preparation of the TEM lamella to allow preparation of a site-specific sample on a pre-cleaved cross-section. Growth of our GaN/sapphire samples involved coalescence of three-dimensional islands to form a continuous film. Highly doped marker layers were included in the sample so that coalescence boundaries formed late in the film growth process could be identified in SCM and CL. Using TEM, we then identified one or more dislocations associated with each of several such late-coalescing boundaries. In contrast, previous studies have addressed coalescence boundaries formed earlier in the growth process and have shown that early-stage island coalescence does not lead to dislocation formation., (Copyright © 2021. Directly correlated measurements of the surface morphology, light emission and subsurface structure and composition were carried out on the exact same nanoscale trench defects in InGaN quantum well (QW) structures. Multiple scanning probe, scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy techniques were used to explain the origin of their unusual emission behaviour and the relationship between surface morphology and cathodoluminescence (CL) redshift. Trench defects comprise of an open trench partially or fully enclosing material in InGaN QWs with different CL emission properties to their surroundings. The CL redshift was shown to typically vary with the width of the trench and the prominence of the material enclosed by the trench above its surroundings. Three defects, encompassing typical and atypical features, were prepared into lamellae for transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A cross marker technique was used in the focused ion beam-scanning electron microscope (FIB-SEM) to centre the previously characterised defects in each lamella for further analysis. The defects with wider trenches and strong redshifts in CL emission had their initiating basal-plane stacking fault (BSF) towards the bottom of the QW stack, while the BSF formed near the top of the QW stack for a defect with a narrow trench and minimal redshift. The raised-centre, prominent defect showed a slight increase in QW thickness moving up the QW stack while QW widths in the level-centred defect remained broadly constant. The indium content of the enclosed QWs increased above the BSF positions up to a maximum, with an increase of approximately 4% relative to the surroundings seen for one defect examined. Gross fluctuations in QW width (GWWFs) were present in the surrounding material in this sample but were not seen in QWs enclosed by the defect volumes. These GWWFs have been linked with indium loss from surface step edges two or more monolayers high, and many surface step edges appear pinned by the open trenches, suggesting another reason for the higher indium content seen in QWs enclosed by trench defects., (Copyright © 2021 The Author(s). Background Context: Synthetic bone graft substitutes are commonly used in spinal fusion surgery. Preclinical data in a model of spinal fusion to support their efficacy is an important component in clinical adoption to understand how these materials provide a biological and mechanical role in spinal fusion., Purpose: To evaluate the in vivo response of a nanosynthetic silicated calcium phosphate putty (OstP) combined with autograft compared to autograft alone or a collagen-biphasic calcium phosphate putty (MasP) combined with autograft in a rabbit spinal fusion model., Study Design: Efficacy of a nanosynthetic silicated calcium phosphate putty as an extender to autograft was studied in an experimental animal model of posterolateral spinal fusion at 6, 9, 12 and 26 weeks, compared to a predicate device., Methods: Skeletally mature female New Zealand White rabbits (70) underwent single level bilateral posterolateral intertransverse process lumbar fusion, using either autograft alone (AG), a nanosynthetic silicated calcium phosphate putty (OstP) combined with autograft (1:1), or a collagen-biphasic calcium phosphate putty (MasP) combined with autograft (1:1). Iliac crest autograft was harvested for each group, and a total of 2 cc of graft material was implanted in the posterolateral gutters per side. Fusion success was assessed at all time points by manual palpation, radiographic assessment, micro-CT and at 12 weeks only using non-destructive range of motion testing. Tissue response, bone formation and graft resorption were assessed by decalcified paraffin histology and by histomorphometry of PMMA embedded sections., Results: Assessment of fusion by manual palpation at the 12 week endpoint showed 7 out of 8 (87.5%) bilateral fusions in the OstP extender group, 4 out of 8 (50%) fusions in the MasP extender group, and 6 out of 8 (75%) fusions in the autograft alone group. Similar trends were observed with fusion scores of radiographic and micro-CT data. Histology showed a normal healing response in all groups, and increased bone formation in the OstP extender group at all timepoints compared to the MasP extender group. New bone formed directly on the OstP granule surface within the fusion mass while this was not a feature of the Collagen-Biphasic CaP material. After 26 weeks the OstP extender group exhibited 100% fusions (5 out of 5) by all measures, whereas the MasP extender group resulted in bilateral fusions in 3 out of 5 (60%), assessed by manual palpation, and fusion of only 20 and 0% by radiograph and micro-CT scoring, respectively. Histology at 26 weeks showed consistent bridging of bone between the transverse processes in the Ost P extender group, but this was not observed in the MasP extender group., Conclusions: The nanosynthetic bone graft substituted studied here, used as an extender to autograft, showed a progression to fusion between 6 and 12 weeks that was similar to that observed with autograft alone, and showed excellent fusion outcomes, bone formation and graft resorption at 26 weeks., Clinical Significance: This preclinical study showed that the novel nanosynthetic silicated CaP putty, when combined with autograft, achieved equivalent fusion outcomes to autograft. Background: Calcium phosphate-based bone graft substitutes are used to facilitate healing in bony defects caused by trauma or created during surgery. Here, we present an injectable calcium phosphate-based bone void filler that has been purposefully formulated with hyaluronic acid to offer a longer working time for ease of injection into bony defects that are difficult to access during minimally invasive surgery., Methods: The bone substitute material deliverability and physical properties were characterized, and in vivo response was evaluated in a critical size distal femur defect in skeletally mature rabbits to 26 weeks. The interface with the host bone, implant degradation, and resorption were assessed with time., Results: The calcium phosphate bone substitute material could be injected as a paste within the working time window of 7-18 min, and then self-cured at body temperature within 10 min. The material reached a maximum ultimate compressive strength of 8.20 ± 0.95 MPa, similar to trabecular bone. The material was found to be biocompatible and osteoconductive in vivo out to 26 weeks, with new bone formation and normal bone architecture observed at 6 weeks, as demonstrated by histological evaluation, microcomputed tomography, and radiographic evaluation., Conclusions: These findings show that the material properties and performance are well suited for minimally invasive percutaneous delivery applications., (© 2021. Background: Early life represents a major risk window for asthma development. However, the mechanisms controlling the threshold for establishment of allergic airway inflammation in early life are incompletely understood. Airway macrophages (AMs) regulate pulmonary allergic responses and undergo TGF-β-dependent postnatal development, but the role of AM maturation factors such as TGF-β in controlling the threshold for pathogenic immune responses to inhaled allergens remains unclear., Objective: Our aim was to test the hypothesis that AM-derived TGF-β1 regulates pathogenic immunity to inhaled allergen in early life., Methods: Conditional knockout (Tgfb1 ΔCD11c ) mice, with TGF-β1 deficiency in AMs and other CD11c + cells, were analyzed throughout early life and following neonatal house dust mite (HDM) inhalation. The roles of specific chemokine receptors were determined by using in vivo blocking antibodies., Results: AM-intrinsic TGF-β1 was redundant for initial population of the neonatal lung with AMs, but AMs from Tgfb1 ΔCD11c mice failed to adopt a mature homeostatic AM phenotype in the first weeks of life. Evidence of constitutive TGF-β1 signaling was also observed in pediatric human AMs. TGF-β1-deficient AMs expressed enhanced levels of monocyte-attractant chemokines, and accordingly, Tgfb1 ΔCD11c mice exposed to HDM throughout early life accumulated CCR2-dependent inflammatory CD11c + mononuclear phagocytes into the airway niche that expressed the proallergic chemokine CCL8. Tgfb1 ΔCD11c mice displayed augmented T H 2, group 2 innate lymphoid cell, and airway remodeling responses to HDM, which were ameliorated by blockade of the CCL8 receptor CCR8., Conclusion: Our results highlight a causal relationship between AM maturity, chemokines, and pathogenic immunity to environmental stimuli in early life and identify TGF-β1 as a key regulator of this., (Copyright © 2021 The Authors. Patellofemoral anatomical dysplasia is associated with patellofemoral instability and pain. The closure of the knee physis occurs at the same age as the peak incidence of patellofemoral dislocation. This study determined the effect on the patellofemoral anatomical development in a rabbit epiphysiodesis model. Twenty-four skeletally immature New Zealand White rabbits were divided into three groups (a) distal femur epiphysiodesis (FE) (b) proximal tibia epiphysiodesis (TE) (c) control; no epiphysiodesis (C) performed at 6 weeks of age. The primary endpoint was shape analysis using three-dimensional reconstructions of micro-computed tomographys (CTs) performed at 30 weeks of age. The limb length ratios (femur:tibia) were significantly different for both FE (mean 0.72, SD 0.0381, P < .001) and TE (mean 0.91, SD 0.0383, P < .001) treatment groups compared to control (mean 0.81, SD 0.0073). Patella height, as measured from the most distal point of the patella to the tibial joint surface (modified Caton-Deschamps measurement), was lower (baja) in the FE and higher (alta) for the TE, compared with the control group. Our findings suggest femoral and tibial shortening can influence the development of the patellofemoral joint, which may be dictated by moment arm function and is potentially responsible for the etiology of patella alta. The performance of transistors designed specifically for high-frequency applications is critically reliant upon the semi-insulating electrical properties of the substrate. The suspected formation of a conductive path for radio frequency (RF) signals in the highly resistive (HR) silicon substrate itself has been long held responsible for the suboptimal efficiency of as-grown GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) at higher operating frequencies. Here, we reveal that not one but two discrete channels distinguishable by their carrier type, spatial extent, and origin within the metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) growth process participate in such parasitic substrate conduction. An n-type layer that forms first is uniformly distributed in the substrate, and it has a purely thermal origin. Alongside this, a p-type layer is localized on the substrate side of the AlN/Si interface and is induced by diffusion of group-III element of the metal-organic precursor. Fortunately, maintaining the sheet resistance of this p-type layer to high values (∼2000 Ω/□) seems feasible with particular durations of either organometallic precursor or ammonia gas predose of the Si surface, i.e., the intentional introduction of one chemical precursor just before nucleation. Terminally differentiated murine osteocytes and adipocytes can be reprogrammed using platelet-derived growth factor-AB and 5-azacytidine into multipotent stem cells with stromal cell characteristics. We have now optimized culture conditions to reprogram human adipocytes into induced multipotent stem (iMS) cells and characterized their molecular and functional properties. Although the basal transcriptomes of adipocyte-derived iMS cells and adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells were similar, there were changes in histone modifications and CpG methylation at cis-regulatory regions consistent with an epigenetic landscape that was primed for tissue development and differentiation. In a non-specific tissue injury xenograft model, iMS cells contributed directly to muscle, bone, cartilage, and blood vessels, with no evidence of teratogenic potential. In a cardiotoxin muscle injury model, iMS cells contributed specifically to satellite cells and myofibers without ectopic tissue formation. Metal halide perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have achieved great progress in recent years. However, bright and spectrally stable blue perovskite LED remains a significant challenge. Three-dimensional mixed-halide perovskites have potential to achieve high brightness electroluminescence, but their emission spectra are unstable as a result of halide phase separation. Here, we reveal that there is already heterogeneous distribution of halides in the as-deposited perovskite films, which can trace back to the nonuniform mixture of halides in the precursors. By simply introducing cationic surfactants to improve the homogeneity of the halides in the precursor solution, we can overcome the phase segregation issue and obtain spectrally stable single-phase blue-emitting perovskites. We demonstrate efficient blue perovskite LEDs with high brightness, e.g., luminous efficacy of 4.7, 2.9, and 0.4 lm W -1 and luminance of over 37,000, 9,300, and 1,300 cd m -2 for sky blue, blue, and deep blue with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.068, 0.268), (0.091, 0.165), and (0.129, 0.061), respectively, suggesting real promise of perovskites for LED applications., Competing Interests: The authors declare that there is no conflict of interest regarding the publication of this article., (Copyright © 2020 Lu Cheng et al.)

Introduction: The posterolateral lumbar fusion (PLF) New Zealand White (NZW) ( Oryctolagus cuniculus ) rabbit model is a long-standing surgical technique for the preclinical evaluation of materials for spinal fusion. A detailed understanding of lumbar spine anatomy and perioperative care requirements of rabbits is imperative for correct execution of the model both scientifically and ethically. This study describes the preoperative procedures and surgical techniques used in single level PLF in a NZW rabbit model as it pertains to the animal husbandry, lumbar spine anatomy, anesthesia, surgical approach, and perioperative care of rabbits in a research setting., Materials and Methods: We describe the surgical technique and perioperative patient care for single level PLF in a NZW rabbit model. Medical records from a single research facility were retrospectively reviewed for adult NZW rabbits that underwent single level PLF (L4-L5) between January 2016 and December 2019. The number of lumbar vertebrae per rabbit, fusion rates at 12 weeks using iliac crest autograft and complications are reported. Skeletal maturity was confirmed by preoperative fluoroscopic and radiographic documented closure of hindlimb physes., Results: The PLF rabbit surgical model and perioperative patient care is described. PLF was performed in 868 adult female entire NZW rabbits. The majority of rabbits had seven lumbar vertebrae (620/868; 71.4%), followed by six (221/868; 25.5%), and eight (27/868; 3.1%). Fusion rates at 12 weeks for PLF using iliac crest autograft as assessed by manual palpation and radiographic assessment was 76.9% and 70.0%, respectively. Integrating diamond with GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) improves thermal management, ultimately increasing the reliability and performance of high-power high-frequency radio frequency amplifiers. Conventionally, an amorphous interlayer is used before growing polycrystalline diamond onto GaN in these devices. This layer contributes significantly to the effective thermal boundary resistance (TBR eff ) between the GaN HEMT and the diamond, reducing the benefit of the diamond heat spreader. Replacing the amorphous interlayer with a higher thermal conductivity crystalline material would reduce TBR eff and help to enable the full potential of GaN-on-diamond devices. In this work, a crystalline Al 0.32 Ga 0.68 N interlayer has been integrated into a GaN/AlGaN HEMT device epitaxy. Two samples were studied, one with diamond grown directly on the AlGaN interlayer and another incorporating a thin crystalline SiC layer between AlGaN and diamond. The TBR eff , measured using transient thermoreflectance, was improved for the sample with SiC (30 ± 5 m 2 K GW -1 ) compared to the sample without (107 ± 44 m 2 K GW -1 ). The reduced TBR eff is thought to arise from improved adhesion between SiC and the diamond compared to the diamond directly on AlGaN because of an increased propensity for carbide bond formation between SiC and the diamond. The stronger carbide bonds aid transmission of phonons across the interface, improving heat transport.

The study aimed to evaluate the comparative osteoconductivity of three commercially available bone void fillers containing gentamicin with respect to new bone, growth, host tissue response and resorption of the implant material. Defects were created in the cancellous bone of the distal femur and proximal tibia of 12-skeletally mature sheep and filled with three commercially available bone void fillers containing gentamicin (Stimulan-G, Cerament-G, Herafill-G). Peripheral blood was taken pre-operatively and at the time of implantation, as well as at intermittent timepoints following surgery to determine systemic gentamicin levels (5-,15- and 30- minutes, 1, 2, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48- and 72-hours, 3-, 6- and 12-weeks). Decalcified, embedded samples were stained with haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and used to assess the host tissue response and the formation of new bone in the presence of test implant materials. No adverse reactions were noted at harvest at any time points for any cancellous implantation sites with the various implant materials. Comparative microCT analysis of the Stimulan-G, Cerament-G and Herafill-G test materials revealed a similar increase in bone surface area and volume between animals implanted with Stimulan-G or Cerament-G test materials. Animals implanted with Herafill-G test materials demonstrated the lowest increases in bone volume and surface area of the test materials tested, at levels similar to the negative control sites. By 12-weeks, Stimulan-G defects were completely closed with mature bone and bone marrow whilst the Cerament-G material was still present after 12 weeks by histological examination. In conclusion, this study demonstrated differences in the bone regenerative capacity of a range of bone void fillers in an in vivo setting.

We describe the use of a cross-shaped platinum marker deposited using electron-beam-induced deposition (EBID) in a focused ion beam - scanning electron microscope (FIB-SEM) system to facilitate site-specific preparation of a TEM foil containing a trench defect in an InGaN/GaN multiple quantum well structure. The defect feature is less than 100 nm wide at the surface. The marker is deposited prior to the deposition of a protective platinum strap (also by EBID) with the centre of the cross indicating the location of the feature of interest, while the arms of the square cross make an acute angle of 45° with the strap's long axis. During the ion-beam thinning process, the marker may be viewed in cross-section from both sides of the sample alternately, and the coming together of the features relating to the arms of the cross indicates increasing proximity to the feature of interest. Although this approach does allow increased precision in locating the region of interest during thinning, it also increases the time required to complete the sample preparation. Hence, this method is particularly well suited to directly correlated multi-microscopy investigations in previously characterised material where high yield and the precise location are more important than preparation time. Sterile and decellularized allograft tendons are viable biomaterials used in reconstructive surgeries for dense connective tissue injuries. Established allograft processing techniques including gamma irradiation and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) can affect tissue integrity. Supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO 2 ) represents a novel alternative that has the potential to decellularize and sterilize tendons with minimized exposure to denaturants, shortened treatment time, lack of toxic residues, and superior tissue penetration, and thus efficacy. This study attempted to develop a single-step hybrid decellularization and sterilization protocol for tendons that involved SCCO 2 treatment with various chemical additives. The processed tendons were evaluated with mechanical testing, histology, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Uniaxial mechanical testing showed that tendons treated with SCCO 2 and additive NovaKill TM Gen2 and 0.1% SDS had significantly higher ( p < 0.05) ultimate tensile stress (UTS) and Young's modulus compared to gamma-irradiated and standard-SDS-treated tendons. This was corroborated by the ultrastructural intactness of SCCO 2 -treated tendons as examined by SEM and FTIR spectroscopy, which was not preserved in gamma-irradiated and standard SDS-treated tendons. However, complete decellularization was not achieved by the experimented SCCO 2 -SDS protocols used in this study. The present study therefore serves as a concrete starting point for development of an SCCO 2 -based combined sterilization and decellularization protocol for allograft tendons, where additive choice is to be optimized., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflicts of interest.

Background: Although originally defined as a type 2 (T2) immune-mediated condition, non-T2 cytokines, such as IFN-γ and IL-17A, have been implicated in asthma pathogenesis, particularly in patients with severe disease. IL-10 regulates T H cell phenotypes and can dampen T2 immunity to allergens, but its functions in controlling non-T2 cytokine responses in asthmatic patients are unclear., Objective: We sought to determine how IL-10 regulates the balance of T H cell responses to inhaled allergen., Methods: Allergic airway disease was induced in wild-type, IL-10 reporter, and conditional IL-10 or IL-10 receptor α (IL-10Rα) knockout mice by means of repeated intranasal administration of house dust mite (HDM). IL-10 and IFN-γ signaling were disrupted by using blocking antibodies., Results: Repeated HDM inhalation induced a mixed IL-13/IL-17A response and accumulation of IL-10-producing forkhead box P3-negative effector CD4 + T cells in the lungs. Ablation of T cell-derived IL-10 increased the IFN-γ and IL-17A response to HDM, reducing IL-13 levels and airway eosinophilia without affecting IgE levels or airway hyperresponsiveness. The increased IFN-γ response could be recapitulated by IL-10Rα deletion in CD11c + myeloid cells or local IL-10Rα blockade. Disruption of the T cell-myeloid IL-10 axis resulted in increased pulmonary monocyte-derived dendritic cell numbers and increased IFN-γ-dependent expression of CXCR3 ligands by airway macrophages, which is suggestive of a feedforward loop of T H 1 cell recruitment. Augmented IFN-γ responses in the HDM allergic airway disease model were accompanied by increased disruption of airway epithelium, which was reversed by therapeutic blockade of IFN-γ., Conclusions: IL-10 from effector T cells signals to CD11c + myeloid cells to suppress an atypical and pathogenic IFN-γ response to inhaled HDM., (Copyright © 2019 The Authors. Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) are enriched at mucosal sites, including the lung, and play a central role in type 2 immunity and maintaining tissue homeostasis. As a result, since their discovery in 2010, research into ILC2s has increased markedly. Numerous strategies have been used to define ILC2s by flow cytometry, often utilizing different combinations of surface markers despite their expression being variable and context-dependent. In this study, we sought to generate a comprehensive characterization of pulmonary ILC2s, identifying stable and context specific markers from different pulmonary compartments following different airway exposures in different strains of mice. Our analysis revealed that pulmonary ILC2 surface marker phenotype is heterogeneous and is influenced by mouse strain, pulmonary location, in vivo treatment/exposure and ex vivo stimulation. Therefore, we propose that a lineage negative cell expressing CD45 and Gata3 defines an ILC2, and subsequent surface marker expression should be used to describe their phenotype in context-specific scenarios., (Copyright © 2020 Entwistle, Gregory, Oliver, Branchett, Puttur and Lloyd.)

We report on a combined theoretical and experimental study of the impact of alloy fluctuations and Coulomb effects on the electronic and optical properties of [Formula: see text]-plane GaN/AlGaN multi-quantum well systems. The presence of carrier localization effects in this system was demonstrated by experimental observations, such as the "S-shape" temperature dependence of the photoluminescence (PL) peak energy, and non-exponential PL decay curves that varied across the PL spectra at 10 K. A three-dimensional modified continuum model, coupled with a self-consistent Hartree scheme, was employed to gain insight into the electronic and optical properties of the experimentally studied [Formula: see text]-plane GaN/AlGaN quantum wells. This model confirmed the existence of strong hole localization arising from the combined effects of the built-in polarization field along the growth direction and the alloy fluctuations at the quantum well/barrier interface. However, for electrons these localization effects are less pronounced in comparison to the holes. Furthermore, our calculations show that the attractive Coulomb interaction between electron and hole results in exciton localization. This behavior is in contrast to the picture of independently localized electrons and holes, often used to explain the radiative recombination process in [Formula: see text]-plane InGaN/GaN quantum well systems.

Background: patellar tendinopathy is an overuse condition most commonly affecting jumping athletes. Surgery is reserved for refractory cases; however, it lacks high level clinical evidence and basic science to support its use. The purpose of this study was to determine the biomechanical and histological response of surgical excision on patellar tendinopathy in the rat collagenase tendinopathy model and correlate MRI findings., Methods: Forty-eight Long Evans rats were divided into three groups: i) no patellar tendinopathy with surgical excision, ii) patella tendinopathy with surgical excision, and iii) patellar tendinopathy with no surgical excision. Endpoints included histology, mechanical testing, and MRI pre- and post-surgical intervention at one and four weeks., Results: No difference in failure load or histological grading was seen between the groups at all time points. MRIs showed initial loss of tendon continuity followed by complete healing with elongated and thickened tendons in all groups., Conclusions: While other research has reported immunohistochemistry and histology of collagenase-induced tendinopathy may be correlated with human pathogenesis, the novel MRI findings from our study suggest that the rat collagenase tendinopathy surgical model may be limited when extrapolating to humans. Further work is needed to determine if any correlation exists between the dosing, location, and animal effect of the collagenase injection model with MRI findings. Introduction: Polytrauma, to include major limb amputation, in a military population presents unique rehabilitation challenges with the overarching goal of restoring function leading to the primary question, "Is this Service Member (SM) capable of returning to duty following rehabilitation?" The US military has a vested interest in maximizing injured SMs occupational performance to allow for return to duty. The purpose of this report is to describe marksmanship (shot grouping and weapon qualification) and return to duty outcomes following a course of VRE-based firearm training in a polytrauma patient population., Methods: The medical records, stored in the Armed Forces Health Longitudinal Technology Application (AHLTA), of all patients who received rehabilitative care at the Center for the Intrepid (CFI) to include VRE-based firearms training between 01OCT2015 and 01AUG2016 were manually reviewed for inclusion. Subjects included all adult (18 years and older) SMs (active duty at time of admission) with a diagnosis of polytrauma who had been referred to and treated (received additional services such as physical and or occupational therapy) at the CFI. Approval for this research was received from the Brooke Army Medical Center Department of Clinical Investigation Office of the Institutional Review Board., Results: Medical records of 30 SMs with a polytrauma diagnosis met the inclusion criteria. Mean shot group sizes for the M9 and M4 weapon decreased between initial and post training time points for the M9 zero (p = 0.009) and M4 zero (p = 0.020). There was no significant difference between initial and post training time points at the other shooting distances with either weapon. There was an 89% qualification rate for both the M9 (n = 18) and M4 (n = 19) weapons for those who attempted qualification; 43% of the population (n = 13) did not attempt qualification with either weapon., Conclusion: SMs with polytrauma demonstrated a high rate of weapon qualification (accuracy) following VRE-based firearm training. Shot group size (precision) at short distances with a M9 pistol and M4 rifle also improved with training. While overall marksmanship appeared to improve, high return to duty rates were not directly related to firearm training or marksmanship. Future efforts need to focus on consistent clinical documentation of firearm training procedure and the establishment of psychometric properties for marksmanship outcome measures., (Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States 2019.)
