This research endeavours to study the growth of ultralong carbon nanotubes (UL-CNTs) from methane using diverse catalysts, namely FeCl 3 , bi-metallic Fe-Cu, Fe-Ni, and Fe-Co chlorides. Aqueous catalyst solutions were evenly dispersed on silica substrates and grown at 950 °C in the presence of hydrogen via a horizontal chemical vapour deposition (CVD) furnace. The samples underwent characterisation by Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and optical microscopy to identify the quality of CNTs and enumerate individual UL-CNTs. Our findings revealed that FeCl 3 , as a mono-metallic catalyst, generated the longest UL-CNTs, which measured 1.32 cm, followed by Fe-Cu (0.85 cm), Fe-Co (0.7 cm), and Fe-Ni (0.6 cm), respectively. The G/D ratio (graphene to defects) from the Raman spectroscopy was the highest with the FeCl 3 catalyst (3.09), followed by Fe-Cu (2.79), Fe-Co catalyst (2.13), and Fe-Ni (2.52). It indicates that the mono-iron-based catalyst also produces the highest purity CNTs. Moreover, this study scrutinises the vapour-liquid-solid (VLS) model for CNT growth and the impact of carbide formation as a precursor to CNT growth. Our research findings indicate that forming iron carbide (Fe 3 C) is a crucial transition phase for amorphous carbon transformation to CNTs. Notably, the iron catalyst generated the longest and densest CNTs relative to other iron-based bi-metallic catalysts, which is consistent with the temperature of carbide formation in the mono-metallic system. From correlations made using the phase diagram with carbon, we conclude that CNT growth is favoured because of increased carbon solubility within the mono-metallic catalyst compared to the bi-metallic catalysts.

The inherent value and use of hydrocarbons from waste plastics and solvents can be extended through open-loop chemical recycling, as this process converts plastic to a range of non-plastic materials. This process is enhanced by first creating plastic-solvent combinations from multiple sources, which then are streamlined through a single process stream. We report on the relevant mechanics for streamlining industrially relevant polymers such as polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (PP), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) into chemical slurries mixed with various organic solvents such as toluene, xylene, and cyclohexane. The miscibility of the polymer feedstock within the solvent was evaluated using the Relative Energy Difference method, and the dissolution process was evaluated using the "Molecular theories in a continuum framework" model. These models were used to design a batch process yielding 1 tonne/h slurry by setting appropriate assumptions including constant viscosity of solvents, disentanglement-controlled dissolution mechanism, and linear increase in the dissolved polymer's mass fraction over time. Solvent selection was found to be the most critical parameter for the dissolution process. The characteristics of the ideal solvent are high affinity to the desired polymer and low viscosity. This work serves as a universal technical guideline for the open-loop chemical recycling of plastics, avoiding the growth of waste plastic by utilising them as a carbon feedstock towards a circular economy framework.

For every three people on the planet, there are approximately two Tonnes (Te) of plastic waste. We show that carbon recovery from polystyrene (PS) plastic is enhanced by the coaddition of solvents to grow carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by liquid injection chemical vapour deposition. Polystyrene was loaded up to 4 wt% in toluene and heated to 780 °C in the presence of a ferrocene catalyst and a hydrogen/argon carrier gas at a 1:19 ratio. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Raman spectroscopy were used to identify multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The PS addition in the range from 0 to 4 wt% showed improved quality and CNT homogeneity; Raman "Graphitic/Defective" (G/D) values increased from 1.9 to 2.3; mean CNT diameters increased from 43.0 to 49.2 nm; and maximum CNT yield increased from 11.37% to 14.31%. Since both the CNT diameters and the percentage yield increased following the addition of polystyrene, we conclude that carbon from PS contributes to the carbon within the MWCNTs. The electrical contact resistance of acid-washed Bucky papers produced from each loading ranged from 2.2 to 4.4 Ohm, with no direct correlation to PS loading. Due to this narrow range, materials with different loadings were mixed to create the six wires of an Ethernet cable and tested using iPerf3; the cable achieved up- and down- link speeds of ~99.5 Mbps, i.e., comparable to Cu wire with the same dimensions (~99.5 Mbps). The lifecycle assessment (LCA) of CNT wire production was compared to copper wire production for a use case in a Boeing 747-400 over the lifespan of the aircraft. Due to their lightweight nature, the CNT wires decreased the CO 2 footprint by 21 kTonnes (kTe) over the aircraft's lifespan.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can be spun into fibers as potential lightweight replacements for copper in electrical current transmission since lightweight CNT fibers weigh <1/6th that of an equivalently dimensioned copper wire. Experimentally, it has been shown that the electrical resistance of CNT fibers increases with longitudinal strain; however, although fibers may be under radial strain when they are compressed during crimping at contacts for use in electrical current transport, there has been no study of this relationship. Herein, we apply radial stress at the contact to a CNT fiber on both the nano- and macro-scale and measure the changes in fiber and contact resistance. We observed an increase in resistance with increasing pressure on the nanoscale as well as initially on the macro scale, which we attribute to the decreasing of axial CNT … CNT contacts. On the macro scale, the resistance then decreases with increased pressure, which we attribute to improved radial contact due to the closing of voids within the fiber bundle. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) show that applied pressure on the fiber can damage the π-π bonding, which could also contribute to the increased resistance. As such, care must be taken when applying radial strain on CNT fibers in applications, including crimping for electrical contacts, lest they operate in an unfavorable regime with worse electrical performance.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) show an oscillation in electrical resistance (from I - V measurements) during mechanical distortion in which peak separation is inversely correlated with the diameter of the MWCNTs. These results provide the first experimental support of the theoretical prediction that distortion causes Van Hove singularities and Dirac cones in MWCNTs to misalign and cause the opening of the band gap, and suggest that when fabricating contacts for CNTs for device applications, the pressure caused by the contact deposition method must be taken into account for manufacturing devices with consistent properties., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Measurement of the angular and overlap dependence of the conduction between two identical carbon nanotubes (CNTs), with the same diameter and chirality, has only been possible through theoretical calculations; however, our observation of increased resistance adjacent to the junction between two CNTs facilitates such measurements. Since electrical resistance was found to increase with increased diameter ratio, applying 10 V to one of dissimilar diameter CNTs results in cleavage at the junction. Manipulation of the resulting identical CNTs (created by cutting a single CNT) allows for the direct measurement of the angular and parallel overlap conduction. Angular (13° < θ < 63°) dependence shows two minima (22° and 44°) and a maximum at 30°, and conduction between parallel CNTs increases with overall tip separation but shows a sinusoidal relationship with contact length, consistent with the concept of atomic scale registry.

Two-point probe and Raman spectroscopy have been used to investigate the effects of vacuum annealing and argon bombardment on the conduction characteristics of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Surface contamination has a large effect on the two-point probe conductivity measurements which results in inconsistent and nonreproducible contacts. The electric field under the contacts is enhanced which results in overlapping depletion regions when probe separations are small (<4 μm) causing very high resistances. Annealing at 200 and 500 °C reduced the surface contamination on the MWCNT, but high resistance contacts still did not allow intrinsic conductivity measurements of the MWCNT. The high resistance measured due to the overlapping depletion regions was not observed after annealing to 500 °C. Argon bombardment reduced the surface contamination more than vacuum annealing at 500 °C but caused a slight increase in the defects concentration, enabling the resistivity of the MWCNT to be calculated, which is found to be dependent on the CNT diameter. The observations have significant implications for future CNT-based devices.

Liquid crystalline polymers have recently been engineered to exhibit complex macroscopic shape adaptivity, including optically- and thermally driven bending, self-sustaining oscillation, torsional motion, and three-dimensional folding. Miniaturization of these novel materials is of great interest for both fundamental study of processing conditions and for the development of shape-changing microdevices. Here, we present a scalable method for high-fidelity replica molding of glassy liquid crystalline polymer networks (LCNs), by vacuum-assisted replica molding, along with magnetic field-induced control of the molecular alignment. We find that an oxygen-free environment is essential to establish high-fidelity molding with low surface roughness. Identical arrays of homeotropic and polydomain LCN microstructures are fabricated to assess the influence of molecular alignment on the elastic modulus (E = 1.48 GPa compared to E = 0.54 GPa), and side-view imaging is used to quantify the reversible thermal actuation of individual LCN micropillars by high-resolution tracking of edge motion. The methods and results from this study will be synergistic with future advances in liquid crystalline polymer chemistry, and could enable the scalable manufacturing of stimuli-responsive surfaces for applications including microfluidics, tunable optics, and surfaces with switchable wetting and adhesion.
