Background: The co-application of biochar and wood vinegar has demonstrated the potential to enhance premium crop production. The present study reveals the effects of co-applying rice husk biochar and wood vinegar (both foliar and soil application) on soil properties and the growth of Chinese cabbage (Brassica chinensis L.) in a two-season pot experiment., Results: The soil pH, electrical conductivity and dissolved organic carbon contents in combination treatments of wood vinegar and biochar were increased more when wood vinegar was applied to soils rather than to leaves, and the parameters were observed to surpass those for chemical fertilizer treatments. The biomass of Chinese cabbage shoots was significantly increased by 60.8- and 27.3-fold in the combined treatments compared to the control when 1% wood vinegar was sprayed to the leaves (WF1) in 2022 and 2023, respectively. Higher contents of vitamin C, soluble protein and soluble sugar were also observed in the combined wood vinegar and biochar treatments compared to chemical fertilizer treatments and the control; for example, the vitamin C content of plant shoot in WF1 was 21.3 times that of the control. The yield and quality of plants were decreased across all treatments in 2023 compared to 2022 but the combination treatments still displayed superiority., Conclusion: The co-application of wood vinegar and biochar enhances the growth and improve the quality of Chinese cabbage through improving the soil properties and plant photosynthesis. Critical source areas (CSAs) can act as a source of phosphorus (P) during intermittent rainfall events and contribute to dissolved P loss via runoff. Dissolved forms of P are readily accessible for plant and algal uptake; hence it is a concern in terms of the eutrophication of freshwater bodies. The potential of CSAs to release dissolved P to surface runoff upon intermittent short-term submergence caused by different rainfall events has not been studied at a field-scale in New Zealand previously. A field study was conducted to investigate the potential of two different pastoral soil CSAs (Recent and Pallic soil) to release soil P over five rainfall events during winter and to explore the mechanisms of P release in these soils. Ten sampling stations were installed within each CSA in an area of 6 × 2 m 2 . Each sampling station had two porewater samplers installed at two depths (2 and 10 cm) below the soil surface. Two platinum half-cell electrodes were installed at the same two depths. Porewater and floodwater samples were collected following five rainfall events. Redox potentials were measured in-situ. Dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP), pH, dissolved organic carbon, cations, anions, and alkalinity of the water samples were measured. Soil chemical P fractions were assessed at the beginning, middle and end of the experiment. Thermodynamic modelling was used to infer dissolution and formation of P and P-associated minerals. The average porewater DRP at the two depths during the rainfall events of the Recent and Pallic soils were 0.32-1.3 mg L -1 and 0.26-2.31 mg L -1 , respectively. The average floodwater DRP concentrations of the Recent and Pallic soils were 35 and 43-fold higher than the target DRP concentration (0.01 mg L -1 ) for the Manawatū River. The study highlights the substantial risk of P loss from CSAs to surface water, driven primarily by the reductive dissolution of Fe and Mn oxy(hydr)oxides. The findings underscore the importance of targeted management strategies to mitigate dissolved P runoff, particularly in high-risk CSAs frequent submerged during rainfall events. The co-contamination of soils by microplastics (MPs) and cadmium (Cd), one of the most perilous heavy metals, is emerging as a significant global concern, posing risks to plant productivity and human health. However, there remains a gap in the literature concerning comprehensive evaluations of the combined effects of MPs and Cd on soil-plant-human systems. This review examines the interactions and co-impacts of MPs and Cd in soil-plant-human systems, elucidating their mechanisms and synergistic effects on plant development and health risks. We also review the origins and contamination levels of MPs and Cd, revealing that sewage, atmospheric deposition, and biosolid applications are contributors to the contamination of soil with MPs and Cd. Our meta-analysis demonstrates that MPs significantly (p<0.05) increase the bioavailability of soil Cd and the accumulation of Cd in plant shoots by 6.9 and 9.3 %, respectively. The MPs facilitate Cd desorption from soils through direct adsorption via surface complexation and physical adsorption, as well as indirectly by modifying soil physicochemical properties, such as pH and dissolved organic carbon, and altering soil microbial diversity. These interactions augment the bioavailability of Cd, along with MPs, adversely affect plant growth and its physiological functions. Moreover, the ingestion of MPs and Cd through the food chain significantly enhances the bioaccessibility of Cd and exacerbates histopathological alterations in human tissues, thereby amplifying the associated health risks. Biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (BDOM), is extensively involved in the recrystallization of minerals and the speciation alteration of associated toxic metals. This study investigates how BDOM extracted from tobacco petiole (TP) or tobacco stalk (TS) biochar influences the speciation repartitioning of Cr(VI) in environments impacted by acid mine drainage (AMD), focusing on interactions with secondary minerals during Schwertmannite (Sch) dissolution and recrystallization. TP-BDOM, rich in lignin-like substances, slowed down the Cr-Sch dissolution and Cr release under acidic conditions compared to TS-BDOM. TP-BDOM's higher O/C component exerts a delayed impact on Cr-Sch stability and Cr(VI) reduction. In-situ ATR-FTIR and 2D-COS analysis showed that carboxylic and aromatic N-OH groups in BDOM could interact with Cr-Sch surfaces, affecting sulfate and Cr(VI) release. It was also observed that slight recrystallization occurred from Cr-Sch to goethite, along with increased Cr incorporation into secondary minerals within TS-BDOM. The escalating problem of compound arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) contamination in agricultural soils necessitates the urgency for effective remediation strategies. This is compounded by the opposing geochemical behaviors of As and Cd in soil, and the efficacy of biochar treatment remains unclear. This pioneering study integrated 3780 observation pairs referred from 92 peer-reviewed articles to investigate the impact of iron-modified biochar on As and Cd responses across diverse soil environments. Regarding the treatments, 1) biochar significantly decreased the exchangeable and acid-soluble fraction of As (AsF1, 20.9%) and Cd (CdF1, 24.0%) in paddy fields; 2) iron-modified biochar significantly decreased AsF1 (32.0%) and CdF1 (27.4%); 3) iron-modified biochar in paddy fields contributed to the morphological changes in As and Cd, mainly characterized by a decrease in AsF1 (36.5%) and CdF1 (36.3%) and an increase in the reducible fraction of As (19.7%) and Cd (39.2%); and 4) iron-modified biochar in paddy fields increased As (43.1%) and Cd (53.7%) concentrations in the iron plaque on root surfaces. Biochar, an environmentally friendly material, was found to passivate lead (Pb) in contaminated soil effectively. This study utilized spectroscopic investigations and partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) analysis to examine the impact of coconut-fiber biochar (CFB) on the translocation, accumulation, and detoxification mechanisms of Pb in soil-rice systems. The results demonstrated a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in bioavailable Pb concentration in paddy soils with CFB amendment, as well as reduced Pb concentrations in rice roots, shoots, and brown rice. Synchrotron-based micro X-ray fluorescence analyses revealed that CFB application inhibited the migration of Pb to the rhizospheric soil region, leading to reduced Pb uptake by rice roots. Additionally, the CFB treatment decreased Pb concentrations in the cellular protoplasm of both roots and shoots, and enhanced the activity of antioxidant enzymes in rice plants, improving their Pb stress tolerance. PLS-PM analyses quantified the effects of CFB on the accumulation and detoxification pathways of Pb in the soil-rice system. This study examined the effectiveness of pristine biochar (BC) and Fe-functionalized biochar (FBC) in remediating As-Sb co-contaminated soil, and revealed the resulting impact on soil enzymatic activities and bacterial communities. Results from incubation experiments showed that the 1.5% FBC treatment reduced the bioavailable As and Sb concentration by 13.5% and 27.1%, respectively, in compared to the control, and reduced the proportion of specifically adsorbed and amorphous Fe-Mn oxide-bound metal(loid) fractions in the treated soil. Among the BC treatments, only the 1.5% BC treatment resulted in a reduction of bioavailable As by 11.7% and Sb by 21.4%. The 0.5% BC treatment showed no significant difference. The FBC achieved high As/Sb immobilization efficiency through Fe-induced electrostatic attraction, π-π electron donor-acceptor coordination, and complexation (Fe-O(H)-As/Sb) mechanisms. Additionally, the 1.5% FBC treatment led to a 108.2% and 367.4% increase in the activities of N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase and urease in soils, respectively, compared to the control. Furthermore, it significantly increased the abundance of Proteobacteria (15.2%), Actinobacteriota (37.0%), Chloroflexi (21.4%), and Gemmatimonadota (43.6%) at the phylum level. Co-occurrence network analysis showed that FBC was better than BC in increasing the complexity of bacterial communities. Partial least squares path modeling further indicated that the addition of biochar treatments can affect soil enzyme activities by altering soil bacterial composition. Both livestock-manure and livestock-manure-derived biochar have been used to remediate heavy metal-contaminated soil. However, direct comparisons of the heavy metal stabilization efficiency of livestock-manure and EQC-manure-biochar (derived from an equal quantity of corresponding livestock-manure) are limited. In the present study, the effect of livestock-manures and EQC-manure-biochars on soil properties and heavy metal bioavailability and leachability were compared using two contrasting soils (Ferralsols and Fluvisols). The results showed that both the livestock-manures and EQC-manure-biochars significantly changed soil pH, available phosphorus, available potassium, alkaline nitrogen and organic matter content (p < 0.05), but the trends were variable. In Ferralsols, the DTPA-extractable Cd and Zn decreased by -0.38%~5.70% and - 3.79%~9.98% with livestock-manure application and by -7.99%~7.23% and - 5.67%~7.17% with EQC-manure-biochars application. In Fluvisols, the DTPA-extractable Cd and Zn decreased by 13.39%~17.41% and - 45.26%~14.24% with livestock-manure application and by 10.76%~16.90% and - 36.38%~16.37% with EQC-manure-biochar application. Furthermore, the change in TCLP-extractable Cd and Zn in both soils was similar to that of DTPA-extractable Cd and Zn. Notably, the Cd and Zn stabilization efficiency of the EQC-manure-biochars was no better than that of the corresponding livestock-manures. Objective: A human steering model for teleoperated driving is extended to capture the human steering behavior in haptic shared control of autonomy-enabled Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs)., Background: Prior studies presented human steering models for teleoperation of a passenger-sized Unmanned Ground Vehicle, where a human is fully in charge of driving. However, these models are not applicable when a human needs to interact with autonomy in haptic shared control of autonomy-enabled UGVs. How a human operator reacts to the presence of autonomy needs to be studied and mathematically encapsulated in a module to capture the collaboration between human and autonomy., Method: Human subject tests are conducted to collect data in haptic shared control for model development and validation. The ACT-R architecture and two-point steering model used in the previous literature are adopted to predict the operator's desired steering angle. A torque conversion module is developed to convert the steering command from the ACT-R model to human torque input, thus enabling haptic shared control with autonomy. A parameterization strategy is described to find the set of model parameters that optimize the haptic shared control performance in terms of minimum average lane keeping error (ALKE)., Results: The model predicts the minimum ALKE human subjects achieve in shared control., Conclusions: The extended model can successfully predict the best haptic shared control performance as measured by ALKE., Application: This model can be used in place of human operators, enabling fully simulation-based engineering, in the development and evaluation of haptic shared control technologies for autonomy-enabled UGVs, including control negotiation strategies and autonomy capabilities.

The beneficial utilization of potentially increasing urban green waste (UGW) is critical for sustainable urban development in China. In this study, UGW was pyrolyzed at different temperatures, and the resulting biochar was used to amend Cd-contaminated soils to grow cabbage. Our results showed that the Cd adsorption capacity of UGW-biochar was positively correlated with the surface area, O/C, and (O+N)/C value of biochar. Furthermore, UGW-biochar was incorporated into three Cd-contaminated soils, including one acidic soil and two neutral soils, to assess its impact on the availability of Cd. The most substantial reduction in the concentration of available Cd was observed in the acidic soil, of the three tested soils. In the neutral soils, a more substantial reduction was found in the heavily Cd-contaminated soil compared to the lightly Cd-contaminated soil. UGW-biochar amendments to the three Cd-contaminated soils resulted in an increase in the cabbage biomass in acidic soil, whereas in neutral soils, it increased in lightly contaminated soils but decreased in heavily contaminated soils. Additionally, the Cd bioaccumulation factor (BCF), translocation factor (TF), and removal efficiency (RE), as impacted by the biochar application, were calculated in the lightly Cd-contaminated soil-cabbage system. The BCF decreased from 5.84 to 3.80 as the dosage of the UGW-biochar increased from 0% to 3%, indicating that the UGW-biochar immobilized Cd and reduced its bioaccumulation in cabbage roots. Based on our investigations, UGW-biochar effectively immobilizes Cd by reducing its mobility and bioavailability in a lightly contaminated environment matrix.

The aqueous phase (AP) of hydrothermal carbonization is rich in humic substances (HSs), which could influence the poultry manure composting process and the product quality. Here, raw AP and its modified product (MAP) with different nitrogen (N) contents were added into chicken manure composting at low (5%) or high (10%) rate. Results showed that all APs addition decreased the temperature and pH but AP-10% increased total N, HSs, and humic acid (HA) of compost by 12%, 18% and 27%, respectively. MAP applications increased the total phosphorus by 8-9% and MAP-10% enhanced the total potussium content by 20%. Additionally, both AP and MAP additions increased the contents of three major components of dissolved organic matter by 20-64%. Neonicotinoids (NEOs) are synthetic insecticides with broad-spectrum insecticidal activity and outstanding efficacy. However, their extensive use and persistence in the environment have resulted in the accumulation and biomagnification of NEOs, posing significant risks to non-target organisms and humans. This review provides a summary of research history, advancements, and highlighted topics in NEOs remediation technologies and mechanisms. Various remediation approaches have been developed, including physiochemical, microbial, and phytoremediation, with microbial and physicochemical remediation being the most extensively studied. Recent advances in physiochemical remediation have led to the development of innovative adsorbents, photocatalysts, and optimized treatment processes. High-efficiency degrading strains with well-characterized metabolic pathways have been successfully isolated and cultured for microbial remediation, while many plant species have shown great potential for phytoremediation. However, significant challenges and gaps remain in this field. Future research should prioritize isolating, domesticating or engineering high efficiency, broad-spectrum microbial strains for NEO degradation, as well as developing synergistic remediation techniques to enhance removal efficiency on multiple NEOs with varying concentrations in different environmental media. Furthermore, a shift from pipe-end treatment to pollution prevention strategies is needed, including the development of green and economically efficient alternatives such as biological insecticides. Integrated remediation technologies and case-specific strategies that can be applied to practical remediation projects need to be developed, along with clarifying NEO degradation mechanisms to improve remediation efficiency. Terrain traversability is critical for developing Go/No-Go maps for ground vehicles, which significantly impact a mission's success. To predict the mobility of terrain, one must understand the soil characteristics. In-situ measurements performed in the field are the current method of collecting this information, which is time-consuming, costly, and can be lethal for military operations. This paper investigates an alternative approach using thermal, multispectral, and hyperspectral remote sensing from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platform. Remotely sensed data combined with machine learning (linear, ridge, lasso, partial least squares (PLS), support vector machines (SVM), and k nearest neighbors (KNN)) and deep learning (multi-layer perceptron (MLP) and convolutional neural network (CNN)) are used to perform a comparative study to estimate the soil properties, such as the soil moisture and terrain strength, used to generate prediction maps of these terrain characteristics. This study found that deep learning outperformed machine learning. Specifically, a multi-layer perceptron performed the best for predicting the percent moisture content (R 2 /RMSE = 0.97/1.55) and the soil strength (in PSI), as measured by a cone penetrometer for the averaged 0-6" (CP06) (R 2 /RMSE = 0.95/67) and 0-12" depth (CP12) (R 2 /RMSE = 0.92/94). A Polaris MRZR vehicle was used to test the application of these prediction maps for mobility purposes, and correlations were observed between the CP06 and the rear wheel slip and the CP12 and the vehicle speed. Thus, this study demonstrates the potential of a more rapid, cost-efficient, and safer approach to predict terrain properties for mobility mapping using remote sensing data with machine and deep learning algorithms.

Biochar application can improve crop yield, reduce ammonia (NH 3 ) volatilization and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emission from farmland. We here conducted a pot experiment to compare the effects of biochar application on rice yield, nitrogen (N) uptake, NH 3 and N 2 O losses in paddy soil with low, medium, and high N inputs at 160 kg/ha, 200 kg/ha and 240 kg/ha, respectively. The results showed that: (1) Biochar significantly increased the rice grain yield at medium (200 kg/ha) and high (240 kg/ha) N inputs by 56.4 and 70.5%, respectively. The way to increase yield was to increase the rice N uptake, rice panicle number per pot and 1,000 grain weight by 78.5-96.5%, 6-16% and 4.4-6.1%, respectively; (2) Under low (160 kg/ha) N input, adding biochar effectively reduced the NH 3 volatilization by 31.6% in rice season. The decreases of pH value and NH 4 + -N content in surface water, and the increases of the abundance of NH 4 + -N oxidizing archaea and bacteria (AOA and AOB) communities contributed to the reduction of NH 3 volatilization following the biochar application; (3) Under same N input levels, the total N 2 O emission in rice season decreased by 43.3-73.9% after biochar addition. The decreases of nir K and nir S gene abundances but the increases of nos Z gene abundance are the main mechanisms for biochar application to reduce N 2 O emissions. Globally, soil contamination with arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) has become a severe environmental issue. Herein, a pot experiment was conducted using pak choi (Brassica chinensis L.) to investigate the effects of biochars derived from crawfish (Procambarus clarkia) shells (CSB) and Chinese banyan (Ficus microcarpa) branches (CBB) on the phytoavailability of As and Pb, and bacterial community composition in soils. Our results showed that the application of CSB and CBB decreased the concentrations of DTPA-extractable Pb in soils ranging from 26.8 % to 28.8 %, whereas CSB increased the concentration of NH 4 H 2 PO 4 -extractable As in soils, compared to the control. Application of both biochars reduced the uptake of As and Pb in the edible part of pak choi. In addition, application of CBB significantly (P < 0.05) increased the activities of α-glucosidase, β-glucosidase, cellobiohydrolase, and acid phosphomonoesterase by 55.0 %, 54.4 %, 195.1 %, and 76.7 %, respectively, compared to the control. High-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that the predominant bacteria at the phyla level in both biochar-treated soils were Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteriota. Redundancy and correlation analyses showed that the changes in bacterial community composition could be related to soil organic carbon content, As availability, and nutrient availability in soils. The N losses and agronomic performances of newly developed slow-releasing fertilisers (SRFs; Epox5 and Poly5) were tested against conventional N fertilisers, urea and diammonium phosphate (DAP), in a climate-controlled lysimeter system. The dry matter (DM) yield and N losses of SRFs were not significantly different from urea and DAP. However, nitrate leaching and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) losses were unexpectedly low and therefore, it was inferred that nitrate underwent a chemical transformation. It was observed that a thick fibreglass wick interrupted drainage and created an anaerobic condition in the soil. The subsoil was found to have a high extractable total iron and it was postulated that iron played a role in the observed low level of N losses. An investigation was carried out with a factorial design using sand types and rates of N application as the main factors. Two types of sand; with high and low iron concentration and four levels of N applications; 0 (control), 50, 100 and 200 kg N ha -1 were employed in a leaching column and nitrate and N 2 O losses were measured. The nitrate leaching was significantly (P < 0.05) affected by sand types wherein a lower nitrate level was recorded for high‑iron concentration sand than for low-iron concentration sand at all N application levels. The N 2 O emission was significantly (P < 0.05) lower for high-iron sand than for low-iron sand for the 200 N treatment, but not significantly different between sand types for other treatments. These observations provide evidence for the involvement of iron in nitrate transformation under anaerobic conditions and it was hypothesised path was dissimilar nitrate reduction (DNR). Soil washing is an efficient, economical, and green remediation technology for removing several heavy metal (loid)s from contaminated industrial sites. The extraction of green and efficient washing agents from low-cost feedback is crucially important. In this study, a soluble humic substance (HS) extracted from leonardite was first tested to wash soils (red soil, fluvo-aquic soil, and black soil) heavily contaminated with arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd). A D-optimal mixture design was investigated to optimize the washing parameters. The optimum removal efficiencies of As and Cd by single HS washing were found to be 52.58%-60.20% and 58.52%-86.69%, respectively. Furthermore, a two-step sequential washing with chemical reductant NH 2 OH•HCl coupled with HS (NH 2 OH•HCl + HS) was performed to improve the removal efficiency of As and Cd. The two-step sequential washing significantly enhanced the removal of As and Cd to 75.25%-81.53% and 64.53%-97.64%, which makes the residual As and Cd in soil below the risk control standards for construction land. The two-step sequential washing also effectively controlled the mobility and bioavailability of residual As and Cd. However, the activities of soil catalase and urease significantly decreased after the NH 2 OH•HCl + HS washing. Follow-up measures such as soil neutralization could be applied to relieve and restore the soil enzyme activity. Ammonia oxidation to hydroxylamine is catalyzed by the ammonia monooxygenase enzyme and copper (Cu) is a key element for this process. We investigated the effect of soil bioavailable Cu changes induced through the application of Cu-complexing compounds on nitrification rate, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA) amoA gene abundance, and mineral nitrogen (N) leaching in urine patches using the Manawatu Recent soil. Further, evaluated the combination of organic compound calcium lignosulphonate (LS) with a growth stimulant Gibberellic acid (GA). Treatments were applied in May 2021 as late-autumn treatments: control (no urine), urine-only at 600 kg N ha -1 , urine + dicyandiamide (DCD), urine + co-poly-acrylic-maleic acid (PA-MA), urine + LS, urine + split-application of LS (2LS), and urine + combination of GA plus LS (GA + LS). In addition, another four treatments were applied in July 2021 as mid-winter treatments: control, urine-only at 600 kg N ha -1 , urine + GA, and urine + GA + LS. Soil bioavailable Cu and mineral N leaching were examined during the experimental period. The AOB/AOA amoA genes were quantified using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Changes in soil bioavailable Cu across treatments correlated with nitrification rate and AOB amoA abundance in late-autumn while the AOA amoA abundance did not change. The reduction in soil bioavailable Cu induced by the PA-MA and 2LS was linked to significant (P < 0.05) reduction in mineral N leaching of 16 and 30%, respectively, relative to the urine-only. The LS did not induce a significant effect on either bioavailable Cu or mineral N leaching relative to urine-only. The GA + LS reduced mineral N leaching by 10% relative to LS in late-autumn, however, there was no significant effect in mid-winter. Soil acidification is the main cause for aggravation of soil cadmium (Cd) pollution. Biochar treatment can increase the soil pH and decrease the Cd availability in soils. However, there is limited information in literature on the comprehensive assessment of the response of Cd fractions to biochar. Therefore, in the present meta-analysis study, we evaluate the response of Cd fractions to biochar application in soils with different pH and to further examine the effect of physicochemical properties of biochar on Cd. Results from the overall analysis indicated that biochar treatment increased the soil pH by 7.0%, thereby decreasing the amount of available Cd (37.3%). In acidic soil, biochar significantly reduced the acid-soluble fraction (Acid-Cd) of Cd by 36.8%, while Oxidizable fraction of Cd (Oxid-Cd, 20.9%) and Residual fraction of Cd (Resid-Cd, 22.2%) were significantly increased. In neutral soils, only Acid-Cd was significantly reduced (33.0%) in the presence of biochar. In alkaline soils, biochar caused significant reduction in Acid-Cd of 12.4% and an increase in Oxid-Cd and Resid-Cd of 26.6% and 47.8%, respectively. Further, our findings showed that biochar with cation exchange capacity >100 cmol + /kg effectively decreased Acid-Cd (32.4%), while biochar with the percentage of hydrogen <2% was more contributory in increasing Resid-Cd (64.3%). Introduction: Racial/ethnic differences in diagnostic and treatment services have been identified for a range of health conditions and outcomes. The current study aimed to analyze whether there are racial/ethnic differences in the timing of diagnostic testing and treatments for males with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD)., Methods: Diagnostic and clinical data for male individuals with DMD born during 1990-2010 were analyzed from eight sites (Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Piedmont Region of North Carolina, Western New York, South Carolina, and Utah) of the Muscular Dystrophy Surveillance, Tracking, and Research Network (MD STARnet). Seven milestones related to diagnosis/treatment experiences were selected as outcomes. Times to each milestone were estimated and compared by four racial/ethnic groups using Kaplan-Meier estimation and Cox proportional-hazards models. Times between initial evaluation or diagnostic testing and later milestones were also compared by race/ethnicity., Results: We identified 682 males with definite or probable DMD of whom 61.7% were non-Hispanic white, 20.5% Hispanic, 10.6% other, and 7.2% non-Hispanic black. Seven milestone events were studied (initial evaluation, first neurology/neuromuscular visit, diagnosis, corticosteroid treatment first offered, corticosteroid treatment started, first electrocardiogram or echocardiogram, and first pulmonary function test). The first five milestone events occurred at an older age for non-Hispanic black individuals compared to non-Hispanic white individuals. Time to first offering of corticosteroids and initiation of corticosteroid therapy was later for Hispanic individuals compared to non-Hispanic white individuals. When accounting for timing of initial evaluation/diagnosis, offering of corticosteroids continued to occur later, but first pulmonary testing occurred earlier, among Hispanic individuals compared to non-Hispanic whites. No significant delays remained for non-Hispanic black individuals after accounting for later initial evaluation/diagnosis., Conclusion: We described racial/ethnic differences in ages at selected diagnostic and treatment milestones. The most notable differences were significant delays for five of seven milestones in non-Hispanic black individuals, which appeared to be attributable to later initial evaluation/diagnosis. Findings for Hispanic individuals were less consistent. Efforts to address barriers to early evaluation and diagnosis for non-Hispanic black children with DMD may promote more timely initiation of recommended disease monitoring and interventions., (© 2023 The Author(s). Copper (Cu) is the main co-factor in the functioning of the ammonia monooxygenase (AMO) enzyme, which is responsible for the first step of ammonia oxidation. We report a greenhouse-based pot experiment that examines the response of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and archaea (AOB and AOA) to different bioavailable Cu concentrations in three pastoral soils (Recent, Pallic, and Pumice soils) planted with ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Five treatments were used: control (no urine and Cu), urine only at 300 mg N kg -1 soil (Cu0), urine + 1 mg Cu kg -1 soil (Cu1), urine + 10 mg Cu kg -1 soil (Cu10), and urine + 100 mg Cu kg -1 soil (Cu100). Pots were destructively sampled at Day 0, 1, 7, 15, and 25 after urine application. The AOB/AOA amoA gene abundance was analyzed by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction at Days 1 and 15. The AOB amoA gene abundance increased 10.0- and 22.6-fold in the Recent soil and 2.1- and 2.5-fold in the Pallic soil for the Cu10 compared with Cu0 on Days 1 and 15, respectively. In contrast, the Cu100 was associated with a reduction in AOB amoA gene abundance in the Recent and Pallic soils but not in the Pumice soil. This may be due to the influence of soil cation exchange capacity differences on the bioavailable Cu. Bioavailable Cu in the Recent and Pallic soils influenced nitrification and AOB amoA gene abundance, as evidenced by the strong positive correlation between bioavailable Cu, nitrification, and AOB amoA. The effect of newly developed controlled-release fertilisers (CRFs); Epox5 and Ver-1 and two levels of Fe2+ applications (478 and 239 kg-FeSO4 ha−1) on controlling nitrogen (N) losses, were tested on ryegrass, in a climate-controlled lysimeter system. The Epox5 and Ver-1 effectively decreased the total N losses by 37 and 47%, respectively, compared to urea. Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions by Ver-1 were comparable to urea. However, Epox5 showed significantly higher (p < 0.05) N2O emissions (0.5 kg-N ha−1), compared to other treatments, possibly due to the lock-off nitrogen in Epox5. The application of Fe2+ did not show a significant effect in controlling the N leaching loss and N2O emission. Therefore, a dissimilatory nitrate reduction and chemodenitrification pathways were not pronounced in this study. The total dry matter yield, N accumulation, N use efficiency and soil residual N were not significantly different among any N treatments. Nevertheless, the N accumulation of CRFs was lower in the first month, possibly due to the slow release of urea. The total root biomass was significantly (p < 0.05) lower for Epox5 (35%), compared to urea. The hierarchical clustering of all treatments revealed that Ver-1 outperformed other treatments, followed by Epox5. Further studies are merited to identify the potential of Fe2+ as a controlling agent for N losses.

Raw biochar with high pH possibly stimulated ammonia (NH 3 ) volatilization in the agricultural soil. We hypothesized that the modified biochar (MBC) with low pH can synchronically decrease the NH 3 and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) losses. We performed a two-year experiment to clarify how citric acid MBC influence the NH 3 volatilization and N 2 O emission as well as the underlying mechanisms. Two typical paddy soils, i.e., Hydragric Anthrosol and Haplic Acrisol, receiving equal urea N with 240 kg ha -1 but varied rates of MBC with 0, 5, 10, and 20 t ha -1 (named Urea, Urea + MBC5, Urea + MBC10, and Urea + MBC20, respectively) were studied. The results showed that MBC-amended treatments effectively mitigated the NH 3 volatilization from Hydragric Anthrosol and Haplic Acrisol by 29.6%-57.9% and 30.5%-62.4% in 2017, and by 16.5%-21.0% and 24.5%-35.0% in 2018, respectively, compared to Urea treatment. In addition, significantly lower N 2 O emissions with averaged 38.3% and 43.1% in 2017, and 51.7% and 26.7% were recorded under Hydragric Anthrosol and Haplic Acrisol, respectively, following the MBC application (P < 0.05). Increased MBC addition performed higher efficacy on mitigating NH 3 volatilization, particularly in the first rice season, while this "dosage effect" was not found for N 2 O reduction. Lowered pH in overlying water, enhanced adsorption of NH 4 + -N and its nitrification rate likely contributed to the lower NH 3 volatilization as result of MBC addition. The nirS and nosZ gene copies were not changed by MBC, while the nirK gene copies were decreased as result of MBC amendment by 8.3%-25.2% under Hydragric Anthrosol and by 21.8%-24.9% under Haplic Acrisol. Consequent lower ratio of nirK/(nirS + nosZ) explained the mitigation effect of MBC on N 2 O emission. This lysimeter study investigated the effect of late-autumn application of dicyandiamide (DCD), co-poly acrylic-maleic acid (PA-MA), calcium lignosulphonate (LS), a split-application of calcium lignosulphonate (2LS), and a combination of gibberellic acid (GA) and LS (GA + LS) to reduce N leaching losses during May 2020 to December 2020 in lysimeter field sites in Manawatu (Orthic Pumice soil) and Canterbury (Pallic Orthic Brown soil), New Zealand. In a second application, urine-only, GA only and GA + LS treatments were applied during July 2020 in mid-winter on both sites. Results showed that late-autumn application of DCD, 2LS and GA + LS reduced mineral N leaching by 8%, 16%, and 35% in the Manawatu site and by 34%, 11%, and 35% in the Canterbury site, respectively when compared to urine-only. There was no significant increase in cumulative herbage N uptake and yield between urine-treated lysimeters in both sites. Mid-winter application of GA and GA + LS reduced mineral N leaching by 23% and 20%, respectively in the Manawatu site relative to urine-only treated lysimeters, but no significant reduction was observed in the Canterbury site. Our results demonstrated the potential application of these treatments in different soils under different climate and management conditions.

The excessive accumulation of wheat grain metals and metalloids caused by ambient air contamination has drawn an increasing concern. However, at present, the differences in the pathways of cadmium and lead accumulation in wheat grains in an air-soil-wheat system are not clear. In this study, wheat was grown around a lead‑zinc smelting area and exposed to different soil Pb and Cd levels and different ambient air Pb and Cd levels. Lead and Cd accumulation in wheat grains was examined in this study. Two models of wheat grain Pb and Cd concentrations were established based on the 3 variables including soil Pb and Cd concentration, ambient air Pb and Cd concentration, and soil pH. The results showed that total suspended particulate (TSP), soil, and wheat grains exhibited different degrees of Pb and Cd contamination in the study area, and the contamination of Cd is more serious than Pb contamination. The Pb in wheat grains was more likely to derive from ambient air than from soil, whereas the impact of ambient air on the accumulation of Cd in wheat grains might be very limited. This speculation was confirmed by the results of the predictor variable relative weight method based on the multiple regression analysis. Introduction of ambient air factor (TSP Pb and Cd) greatly improved the modeling effect of wheat grains Pb, while the modeling of grain Cd was more dependent on soil pH and total soil Cd. Biochar (BC) application to agricultural soil can impact two nitrogen (N) gases pollutants, i.e., the ammonia (NH 3 ) and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) losses to atmospheric environment. Under rice-wheat rotation, applied at which growth cycle may influence the aforementioned effects of BC. We conducted a soil column (35 cm in inner diameter and 70 cm in height) experiment to evaluate the responses of wheat N use efficiency (NUE), NH 3 volatilization, and N 2 O emission from wheat season to biochar applied at rice (R) or wheat (W) growth cycle, meanwhile regarding the effect of inorganic fertilizer N input rate, i.e., 72, 90, and 108 kg ha -1 (named N72, N90, and N108, respectively). The results showed that BC application influenced the wheat growth and grain yield. In particular, BC applied at rice season increased the wheat grain yield when receiving 90 and 108 kg N ha -1 . The improved wheat grain yield was attributed to that N90 + BC(R) and N108 + BC(R) enhanced the wheat NUE by 53.8% and 52.8% over N90 and N108, respectively. More N input led to higher NH 3 volatilization and its emission factor. Interestingly, 19.7%-34.0% lower NH 3 vitalizations were recorded under treatments with BC applied in rice season, compared with the treatments only with fertilizer N. BC applied at rice season exerted higher efficiency on mitigating N 2 O emission than that applied at wheat season under three N input rates, i.e., 60.5%-77.6% vs 29.8%-34.8%. Overall, considering the crop yield and global warming potential resulting from NH 3 volatilization and N 2 O emission of wheat season, N90 + BC(R) is recommended. Introduction/aims: Corticosteroids have been shown to improve muscle strength and delay loss of ambulation (LOA) in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and are considered standard of care despite significant side-effects. The objective of this study is to evaluate whether corticosteroid treatment after LOA is beneficial for cardiac or pulmonary functions among boys with DMD., Methods: We used the Muscular Dystrophy Surveillance, Tracking, and Research Network (MD STARnet) to characterize associations between corticosteroid use and onset of abnormal left ventricular (LV) function or abnormal percent predicted forced vital capacity (ppFVC) among 398 non-ambulatory boys with DMD. Kaplan-Meier curve estimation was used to compare time to onset by corticosteroid use groups; Cox proportional hazards modeling was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals., Results: We found no differences in time to onset of abnormal LV function by corticosteroid use groups. We observed a longer time from LOA to first abnormal ppFVC in boys that were treated with corticosteroid ≥1 y beyond LOA compared with those with no corticosteroid use or those who stopped corticosteroid use within 1 y of LOA., Discussion: Our findings show no association of corticosteroid use beyond LOA with the onset of abnormal LV function, but a significant association with a delay in onset of abnormal ppFVC. Soil heavy metal contamination caused by mining activities is a global issue. These heavy metals can be enriched in plants and animals through the food chain, and eventually transferred to the human system and threatening public health. Biochar, as an environmentally friendly soil remediation agent, can effectively immobilize heavy metals in soil. However, most researchers concern more about the remediation effect and mechanism of biochar for industrial and agricultural contaminated soil, while related reviews focusing on mining soil remediation are limited. Furthermore, the remediation effect of soil in mining areas is affected by many factors, such as physicochemical properties of biochar, pyrolysis conditions, soil conditions, mining environment and application method, which can lead to great differences in the remediation effect of biochar in diverse mining areas. Therefore, it is necessary to systematically unravel the relevant knowledge of biochar remediation, which can also provide a guide for future studies on biochar remediation of contaminated soils in mining areas. The present paper first reviews the negative effects of mining activities on soil and the advantages of biochar relative to other remediation methods, followed by the mechanism and influencing factors of biochar on reducing heavy metal migration and bioavailability in mining soil were systematically summarized. Production advantages, environmental benefits and increasing parasite resistance are changing the composition of New Zealand pastures. Traditional ryegrass/clover pasture mixes are being replaced by forage herb crops such as lucerne, chicory and plantain that accumulate a higher concentration of contaminants such as cadmium (Cd). To explore the relationship between Cd in forage crops and the Cd concentration accumulated by animals, four-month-old lambs at four farms across the central North Island of New Zealand were grazed on different forage crops (ryegrass, chicory, lucerne and plantain) between weaning and slaughter. Soil and pasture samples, and sequential liver biopsies, were collected and analysed for total Cd. There were significant differences in Cd concentration between the forage crops (chicory > plantain > lucerne > ryegrass) and this ordering was repeated for Cd in liver. There was no exceedance of maximum limits (ML) for Cd in offal set by the EU and NZ/Australia food safety standards authorities for animals of this study, although the highest concentration of Cd in chicory (0.85 mg/kg DW) was considerably lower than has been recorded elsewhere in New Zealand (4.5 mg/kg DW). Provisional Soil Management Values (SMVs) were developed to explore compliance of liver with EU food standards as a function of grazing chicory. For a soil pH of 5, exceedance might occur at a soil cadmium concentration of 0.34 mg/kg. This concentration falls within Tier 0 of the New Zealand Tiered Fertiliser Management System which seeks to ensure soil Cd remains within acceptable limits over the next 100 years and beyond. Increased Cd uptake by fodder crops and its management in these Tier 0 pastoral soils is therefore an emerging issue for pastoral agriculture. Population-based estimates of survival among individuals with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) living in the United States are lacking. It is also unclear whether the association between glucocorticoid use and all-cause mortality persists in the context of other common treatments (cardiac medication, cough-assist, bilevel positive airway pressure, and scoliosis surgery) observed to delay mortality. Among 526 individuals identified by the Muscular Dystrophy Surveillance, Tracking, and Research Network, the estimated median survival time from birth was 23.7 years. Current glucocorticoid users had a lower hazard of mortality than non-users. Individuals who ever had scoliosis surgery had a lower hazard of mortality than individuals who did not have scoliosis surgery. Individuals who ever used cough assist had a lower hazard of mortality than individuals who never used cough assist. Non-Hispanic Black individuals had a higher hazard of mortality than non-Hispanic White individuals. No differences in hazards of mortality were observed between ever versus never use of cardiac medication and ever versus never use of bilevel positive airway pressure. The glucocorticoid observation is consistent with the 2018 Care Considerations statement that glucocorticoid use continues in the non-ambulatory phase. Objective: This paper extends a prior human operator model to capture human steering performance in the teleoperation of unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) in path-following scenarios with varying speed., Background: A prior study presented a human operator model to predict human steering performance in the teleoperation of a passenger-sized UGV at constant speeds. To enable applications to varying speed scenarios, the model needs to be extended to incorporate speed control and be able to predict human performance under the effect of accelerations/decelerations and various time delays induced by the teleoperation setting. A strategy is also needed to parameterize the model without human subject data for a truly predictive capability., Method: This paper adopts the ACT-R cognitive architecture and two-point steering model used in the previous work, and extends the model by incorporating a far-point speed control model to allow for varying speed. A parameterization strategy is proposed to find a robust set of parameters for each time delay to maximize steering performance. Human subject experiments are conducted to validate the model., Results: Results show that the parameterized model can predict both the trend of average lane keeping error and its lowest value for human subjects under different time delays., Conclusions: The proposed model successfully extends the prior computational model to predict human steering behavior in a teleoperated UGV with varying speed., Application: This computational model can be used to substitute for human operators in the process of development and testing of teleoperated UGV technologies and allows fully simulation-based development and studies.

The minimization of Cd pollution in wheat is urgently needed in many parts of the world. Thus, the aims of the present study were to evaluate the feasibility of popular technologies (i.e., soil amendment and low-Cd wheat cultivar) at sites with different Cd risk levels (high and low) and to propose a risk-based strategy for safe grain production. At a high-Cd site, wheat variety JM22 yielded significantly lower grain Cd than SX828, regardless of soil amendment (biochar, sepiolite, and microbial agent YZ1). Neither biochar nor sepiolite amendment reduced grain Cd, DTPA-Cd, or bioconcentration factors, possibly due to low dosage. Metagenomic sequencing and quantitative PCR showed that YZ1 colonization had little effect on rhizospheric fungal community structure and could not be sustained through winter. At a low-Cd site, significantly lower grain Cd was observed in JM22, LX99, and JM262, which could be used as low-Cd cultivars in the study area. Interestingly, the grain Cd of JM22 was linearly correlated with soil Cd (R 2  = 0.84), which allowed the inference of a soil Cd threshold of 1.55 mg·kg -1 , below which JM22 alone was capable of producing safe grain. Cost-benefit analysis also indicated that the use of low-Cd cultivars is promising for pollution control. Plant growth-promoting endophytic bacteria can potentially improve the biomass production of Hg-accumulating grasses, resulting in improved Hg extraction from contaminated soils. This study aimed to analyze the effect of inoculation of Hg-resistant endophytic bacteria (i) Jeotgalicoccus huakuii ( B1 ) and (ii) Bacillus amyloliquefaciens ( B2 ), as single and consortium inoculant, on biomass production and Hg bioaccumulation of Bermuda grass ( R1 ) and Indian goosegrass ( R2 ) planted as monoculture and mixed cropping. The grass seeds were surface-sterilized before the inoculation. Both inoculated seeds with B1 and B2 (treatments) and uninoculated seeds were sown separately in sterilized sand. Grass seedlings of both treatments and control were replanted in the washed and sterilized sand medium, spiked with HgCl 2 (100 mg kg -1 ). A subset of grass was harvested at 0, 4, 6, and 10 weeks after planting to measure biomass production and Hg bioaccumulation. The results showed that bacterial inoculation enhanced the grass biomass by 52.68% and Hg bioaccumulation by 47.76%. Mercury residue of Hg-spiked sand treated with the bacterial consortium was reduced by 80%. This suggests that endophytic bacteria can improve grass biomass production and enhance Hg bioaccumulation in grass biomass.

Background: Youth with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy (DBMD) experience challenges in attaining adult roles, which may impact quality of life. New interventions and treatments may facilitate adult role attainment through improved function. Historical data on adult role attainment is important to assess the impact of new interventions on teens and young adults with DBMD. This study assesses medical knowledge, independence and employment, and relationships among adolescents and young adults with DBMD., Methods: This study uses data from a 2013 Muscular Dystrophy Surveillance, Tracking, and Research Network (MD STARnet) survey on adult transition. Males with DBMD aged 16-30 years were included., Results: Sixty-five of 258 eligible males participated; we report results on 60 participants with an MD STARnet case definition of DMD or BMD. Individuals with BMD reported higher rates than those with DMD of frequently staying home without supervision (50% BMD; 14% DMD), independently performing daily physical needs (93% BMD; 7% DMD) and being employed full or part time (33% BMD; 4% DMD). Most participants understood medication and physical therapy goals; less than half indicated being often or always responsible for scheduling DMBD-related management and refilling medications. Most had not been in a romantic relationship but reported desiring such relationships., Conclusions: Our data reinforce the impact of DMD (and to a lesser extent, BMD) on transition to adult roles. These results provide an important historical comparator for teen and adult patients who are trying new interventions and therapies. Such data are important for assessing the quality-of-life impact of new treatments and to inform support and training programs for people with DBMD as they transition to new adult roles and responsibilities.

Introduction/aims: Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies (DBMD) are X-linked neuromuscular disorders characterized by progressive muscle weakness, leading to decreased mobility and multisystem complications. We estimate productivity costs attributable to time spent by a parent caring for a male child under the age of 18 y with DBMD, with particular focus on female caregivers of boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) who have already lost ambulation., Methods: Primary caregivers of males with DBMD in the Muscular Dystrophy Surveillance and Research Tracking Network (MD STARnet) were surveyed during 2011-2012 on family quality of life measures, including labor market outcomes. Of 211 respondents, 96 female caregivers of boys with DBMD were matched on state, year of survey, respondent's age, child's age, and number of minor children with controls constructed from Current Population Survey extracts. Regression analysis was used to estimate labor market outcomes and productivity costs., Results: Caregivers of boys with DBMD worked 296 h less per year on average than caregivers of unaffected children, translating to a $8816 earnings loss in 2020 U.S. dollars. Caregivers of boys with DMD with ≥4 y of ambulation loss had a predicted loss in annualized earnings of $23,995, whereas caregivers of boys with DBMD of the same ages who remained ambulatory had no loss of earnings., Discussion: Female caregivers of non-ambulatory boys with DMD face additional household budget constraints through income loss. Soil amendments of black bone (BB), biochar (BC), silicon fertilizer (SI), and leaf fertilizer (LF) play vital roles in decreasing cadmium (Cd) availability, thereby supporting healthy plant growth and food security in agroecosystems. However, the effect of their additions on soil microbial community and the resulting soil Cd bioavailability, plant Cd uptake and health growth are still unknown. Therefore, in this study, BB, BC, SI, and LF were selected to evaluate Cd amelioration in wheat grown in Cd-contaminated soils. The results showed that relative to the control, all amendments significantly decreased both soil Cd bioavailability and its uptake in plant tissues, promoting healthy wheat growth and yield. This induced-decrease effect in seeds was the most obvious, wherein the effect was the highest in SI (52.54%), followed by LF (43.31%), and lowest in BC (35.24%) and BB (31.98%). Moreover, the induced decrease in soil Cd bioavailability was the highest in SI (29.56%), followed by BC (28.85%), lowest in LF (17.55%), and BB (15.30%). The significant effect in SI likely resulted from a significant increase in both the soil bioavailable Si and microbial community (Acidobacteria and Thaumarchaeota), which significantly decreased soil Cd bioavailability towards plant roots. In particular, a co-occurrence network analysis indicated that soil microbes played a substantial role in wheat yield under Si amendment. Purpose: Urinary tract infections commonly occur in patients with spina bifida and pose a risk of renal scarring. Routine antibiotic prophylaxis has been utilized in newborns with spina bifida to prevent urinary tract infections. We hypothesized that prophylaxis can safely be withheld in newborns with spina bifida until clinical assessment allows for risk stratification., Materials and Methods: Newborns with myelomeningocele at 9 institutions were prospectively enrolled in the UMPIRE study and managed by a standardized protocol with a strict definition of urinary tract infection. Patient data were collected regarding details of reported urinary tract infection, baseline renal ultrasound findings, vesicoureteral reflux, use of clean intermittent catheterization and circumcision status in boys. Risk ratios and corresponding 95% confidence intervals were calculated using log-binomial models., Results: From February 2015 through August 2019 data were available on 299 newborns (50.5% male). During the first 4 months of life, 48 newborns (16.1%) were treated for urinary tract infection with 23 (7.7%) having positive cultures; however, only 12 (4.0%) met the strict definition of urinary tract infection. Infants with grade 3-4 hydronephrosis had an increased risk of urinary tract infection compared to infants with no hydronephrosis (RR=10.1; 95% CI=2.8, 36.3). Infants on clean intermittent catheterization also had an increased risk of urinary tract infection (RR=3.3; 95% CI=1.0, 10.5)., Conclusions: The incidence of a culture positive, symptomatic urinary tract infection among newborns with spina bifida in the first 4 months of life was low. Patients with high grades of hydronephrosis or those on clean intermittent catheterization had a significantly greater incidence of urinary tract infection. Our findings suggest that routine antibiotic prophylaxis may not be necessary for most newborns with spina bifida.

Biofertilizer can improve soil quality, especially the microbiome composition, which potentially affect soil nitrogen (N) cycling. However, little is known about the responses of nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emission and ammonia (NH 3 ) volatilization from biochar-amended paddy soil to the biofertilizer application. Therefore, we conducted a soil column experiment using four 240 kg N ha -1 (equivalent to 1.7 g N pot -1 ) treatments consisting of biofertilizer (3 t ha -1 , equivalent to 21.2 g pot -1 ), biochar (7.5 t ha -1 , equivalent to 63.6 g pot -1 ), and a mixture of biofertilizer and biochar at the same rate and a control (CK). The results showed that the N 2 O emissions and NH 3 volatilizations were equivalent to 0.15-0.28% and 18.0-31.5% of rice seasonal N applied to the four treatments, respectively. Two treatments with biofertilizer and biochar individual amendment significantly increased (P < 0.05) the N 2 O emissions to same degree by 30.2%, while co-application of biochar and biofertilizer further increased the N 2 O emission by 74.4% compared to the control. The higher N 2 O emission was likely attributed to the increased gene copies of AOA, nirK, and nirS. Applying biofertilizer significantly increased (P < 0.05) NH 3 volatilization by 24.7% relative to the control, while applying biochar had no influence on NH 3 volatilization. Co-application of biofertilizer and biochar significantly decreased (P < 0.05) NH 3 volatilization by 12.3% compared to the control. Overall, the net global warming potential based on NH 3 and N 2 O in current study increased by 13.0-26.0% in both the individual- and co-application of biofertilizer and biochar. Interestingly, both individual- and co-applications of biofertilizer and biochar increased the rice grain yield by 16.5-38.3%. Therefore, applications of biofertilizer and biochar did not increase the GHGI. Particularly, the co-applying of them significantly lowered (P < 0.05) the GHGI by 15.2%. Haptic shared control is used to manage the control authority allocation between a human and an autonomous agent in semi-autonomous driving. Existing haptic shared control schemes, however, do not take full consideration of the human agent. To fill this research gap, this study presents a haptic shared control scheme that adapts to a human operator's workload, eyes on road and input torque in real time. We conducted human-in-the-loop experiments with 24 participants. In the experiment, a human operator and an autonomy module for navigation shared the control of a simulated notional High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) at a fixed speed. At the same time, the human operator performed a target detection task. The autonomy could be either adaptive or non-adaptive to the above-mentioned human factors. Results indicate that the adaptive haptic control scheme resulted in significantly lower workload, higher trust in autonomy, better driving task performance and smaller control effort., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. The application of biochar to soils contaminated with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) has received particular attention due to its ability to reduce PTE uptake by the plants. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to identify Cd and Pb concentrations in plant shoots and roots in response to biochar application and soil properties. We collected data from 65 peer-reviewed journal articles published from 2009 to 2020 in which 66% of manuscripts were published from 2015 to 2020. The data were processed using OpenMEE software. The results pinpointed that addition of biochar to soil caused a significant decrease in shoot and root Cd and Pb concentrations as compared to untreated soils with biochar (control), and the reduction rate was affected by plant types and both biochar and soil properties. The biochar size less than 2 mm, biochar pH higher than 10, pyrolysis temperature of 401-600 °C, and the application rate higher than 2% appeared to be effective in reducing shoot and root Cd and Pb concentration. Soil properties such as pH, SOC, and texture influenced the efficiency of biochar for reducing plant Cd and Pb uptake. Biochar application increased SOC (54.3%), CEC (48.0%), pH (0.08), and EC (59.4%), and reduced soil extractable Cd (42.1%) and Pb (47.1%) concentration in comparison to control. Background: Quantifying associations between genetic mutations and loss of ambulation (LoA) among males diagnosed with childhood-onset dystrophinopathy is important for understanding variation in disease progression and may be useful in clinical trial design., Methods: Genetic and clinical data from the Muscular Dystrophy Surveillance, Tracking, and Research Network for 358 males born and diagnosed from 1982 to 2011 were analyzed. LoA was defined as the age at which independent ambulation ceased. Genetic mutations were defined by overall type (deletion/duplication/point mutation) and among deletions, those amenable to exon-skipping therapy (exons 8, 20, 44-46, 51-53) and another group. Cox proportional hazards regression modeling was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs)., Results: Mutation type did not predict time to LoA. Controlling for corticosteroids, Exons 8 (HR = 0.22; 95% CI = 0.08, 0.63) and 44 (HR = 0.30; 95% CI = 0.12, 0.78) were associated with delayed LoA compared to other exon deletions., Conclusions: Delayed LoA in males with mutations amenable to exon-skipping therapy is consistent with previous studies. The two forage species used in New Zealand pastoral agricultural systems, chicory (Cichorium intybus) and plantain (Plantago lanceolata) show differential ability to absorb and translocate cadmium (Cd) from roots to shoots. Chicory can accumulate Cd from even low Cd soils to levels that might exceed regulatory guidelines for Cd in fodder crops and food. Chicory and plantain were grown in soil-filled rhizocolumns under increasing Cd levels (0 (Control), 0.4, 0.8 and 1.6 mg Cd/kg soil) for 60 days and showed variable secretion of oxalic, fumaric, malic and acetic acids as a function of Cd treatment. Plant roots secrete such Low Molecular Weight Organic Acids into the rhizosphere soil, which can influence Cd uptake. Chicory showed significantly (P < 0.05) lower secretion of fumaric acid, and higher secretion of acetic acid than plantain at all Cd treatments. We propose that the significant secretion differences between the two species can explain the significantly (P < 0.05) higher shoot Cd concentration in chicory for all Cd treatments. Introduction: Previous studies indicated variability in the prevalence of Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies (DBMD) by racial/ethnic groups. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Muscular Dystrophy Surveillance, Tracking, and Research network (MD STARnet) conducts muscular dystrophy surveillance in multiple geographic areas of the USA and continues to enroll new cases. This provides an opportunity to continue investigating differences in DBMD prevalence by race and ethnicity and to compare the impact of using varying approaches for estimating prevalence., Objective: To estimate overall and race/ethnicity-specific prevalence of DBMD among males aged 5-9 years and compare the performance of three prevalence estimation methods., Methods: The overall and race/ethnicity-specific 5-year period prevalence rates were estimated with MD STARnet data using three methods. Method 1 used the median of 5-year prevalence, and methods 2 and 3 calculated prevalence directly with different birth cohorts. To compare prevalence between racial/ethnic groups, Poisson modeling was used to estimate prevalence ratios (PRs) with non-Hispanic (NH) whites as the referent group. Comparison between methods was also conducted., Results: In the final population-based sample of 1,164 DBMD males, the overall 5-year prevalence for DBMD among 5-9 years of age ranged from 1.92 to 2.48 per 10,000 males, 0.74-1.26 for NH blacks, 1.78-2.26 for NH whites, 2.24-4.02 for Hispanics, and 0.61-1.83 for NH American Indian or Alaska Native and Asian or Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander (AIAN/API). The PRs for NH blacks/NH whites, Hispanics/NH whites, and NH AIAN/API/NH whites were 0.46 (95% CI: 0.36-0.59), 1.37 (1.17-1.61), and 0.61 (0.40-0.93), respectively., Conclusions: In males aged 5-9 years, compared to the prevalence of DBMD in NH whites, prevalence in NH blacks and NH AIAN/API was lower and higher in Hispanics. The aim of this study was to investigate the stability of heavy metals in biochar derived from rice straw with heavy metal enrichment, and the relationship between pyrolysis temperature and the stability of heavy metals in biochar. The concentrations of heavy metals of rice straw and biochar (pyrolyzed at 300 °C, 500 °C, 700 °C, and 900 °C) were measured. The experiments of extraction and leaching were conducted to evaluate the effect of pyrolysis temperature on the stability of heavy metals in biochar. A pot experiment was conducted to investigate the environmental risk of heavy metals from biochar. The pyrolysis temperature affected the pH, total C, total N, surface structure, functional groups, and the concentrations of heavy metals in biochar. After being pyrolyzed, the bioavailable DTPA fraction of total Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb of BC500, BC700, BC900, and BC900 decreased by 72.87%, 69.45%, 48.09% and 15.89%, respectively, in comparison with levels in rice straw. In addition, the leaching potential of heavy metals in biochar was significantly reduced. The pot experiment and the correlation analysis indicated that the pyrolysis temperature was not significantly related to the accumulation of heavy metals in aerial parts of rice seedlings. Increase in the pyrolysis temperature had a positive effect on increasing the stability and decreasing the mobility of heavy metals in biochar. However, the variations in the pyrolysis temperature were not the main factor to affect the uptake of heavy metals originated from biochar into the aerial parts of rice seedlings.

The soil fluorine (F) concentration in New Zealand agricultural soils has increased with time as a direct result of the widespread application of phosphate fertilizer to land. Elevated soil F concentrations may potentially harm soil microorganisms, which are important for nutrient cycling and soil formation. Rhizobium leguminosarum is a N 2 -fixing soil bacterium that is a fundamental component in New Zealand legume-based pastoral farming. Any impact of F on Rhizobium leguminosarum would have an adverse effect on New Zealand pasture production. In this study, F toxicity to Rhizobium leguminosarum was examined as a first step to develop F guideline values for New Zealand agricultural soils. Bottle-based experiments were conducted to examine the effect of the F - ion on Rhizobium-white clover (Trifolium repens L.) symbiosis by observing nodule morphology and growth. Results indicate that the F - concentration that causes 10% inhibition of Rhizobium respiration (IC 10 ) for F - toxicity to Rhizobium leguminosarum was >100 mg F -  L -1 . Significant morphological changes occurred when Rhizobium was exposed to F concentrations of 500 and 1000 mg L -1 . Both light and transmission electron micrographs confirmed that the Rhizobium leguminosarum-white clover interaction was not influenced by F - concentrations >100 mg L -1 . The toxic F - concentration for Rhizobium leguminosarum determined in this study is orders of magnitude higher than the F - concentration in New Zealand agriculture soils under "normal conditions." Chromium (Cr) is a common environmental contaminant due to industrial processes and anthropogenic activities such as mining of chrome ore, electroplating, timber treatment, leather tanning, fertilizer and pesticide, etc. Cr exists mainly in both hexavalent [Cr(VI)] and trivalent [Cr(III)] form, being Cr(VI) with non-degradability and potential to be hidden, thereby affecting surrounding environment and being toxic to human health. Therefore, researches on remediation of Cr pollution in the environment have received much attention. Biochar is a low-cost adsorbent, which has been identified as a suitable material for Cr(VI) immobilization and removal from soil and wastewater. This review incorporates existing literature to provide a detailed examination into the (1) Cr chemistry, the source and current status of Cr pollution, and Cr toxicity and health; (2) feedstock and characterization of biochar; (3) processes and mechanisms of immobilization and removal of Cr by biochar, including oxidation-reduction, electrostatic interactions, complexation, ion exchange, and precipitation; (4) applications of biochar for Cr(VI) remediation and the modification of biochar to improve its performance; (5) factors affecting removal efficiency of Cr(VI) with respect to its physico-chemical conditions, including pH, temperature, initial concentration, reaction time, biochar characteristics, and coexisting contaminants. Finally, we identify current issues, challenges, and put forward recommendations as well as proposed directions for future research. This review provides a thorough understanding of using biochar as an emerging biomaterial adsorbent in Cr(VI)-contaminated soils and wastewater.

Using national data, we examined emergency department (ED) encounters during 2006-2011 for which a diagnosis code for fragile X syndrome (FXS) was present ( n = 7,217). Almost half of ED visits coded for FXS resulted in hospitalization, which is much higher than for ED visits not coded for FXS. ED visits among females coded for FXS were slightly more likely to result in hospitalization. These findings underscore the importance of surveillance systems that could accurately identify individuals with FXS, track healthcare utilization and co-occurring conditions, and monitor quality of care in order to improve care and reduce FXS-associated morbidity.

Previous studies demonstrated that men were more likely to have plaque rupture and are at greater risk for myocardial infarction and stroke than women. We evaluated differences in carotid plaque characteristics by MRI between men and women with mild-moderate atherosclerosis and elevated ApoB levels. One hundred eighty-two subjects (104 men and 78 women) with CAD or carotid stenosis (≥ 15% by ultrasound), ApoB ≥ 120 mg/dL and carotid MRI scan were included. Percent wall volume (%WV) was calculated as (wall volume/total vessel volume) × 100%. Three major plaque compositions, fibrous tissue (FT), calcification (CA) and lipid rich necrotic core (LRNC), were identified and quantified using published MRI criteria. Adventitial and plaque neovascularization as fractional plasma volume (V p ) and permeability as transfer constant (K trans ) were analyzed using kinetic modeling. These characteristics were compared between men and women. Men, compared to women, were younger (54 ± 8 vs. 58 ± 8 years, p = 0.01), had higher rate of previous MI (46 vs. 26%, p = 0.005) but lower proportions of metabolic syndrome (37 vs. 59%, p = 0.003). After adjusting for between-gender differences, men were significantly more likely to have LRNC (OR 2.22, 95% CI 1.04-4.89, p = 0.04) and showed significantly larger %LRNC than women (diff = 4.3%, 95% CI 1.6-6.9%, p = 0.002), while %WV, FT, and CA were similar between men and women. There were no statistically significant differences in adventitial and plaque V p or K trans . Men were significantly more likely to have LRNC and had larger LRNC than women. However, men and women showed relatively similar levels of adventitial and plaque neovascularization and permeability.Trial registration: NCT00715273 at ClinicalTrials.gov. Ciprofloxacin has been frequently detected in water environment, and its removal has become a significant public concern. Biochar-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (BC/nZVI) to activate hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) has many advantages on promoting the removal of organic contaminants. In this paper, the BC/nZVI activating H 2 O 2 degradation of ciprofloxacin was systematically investigated by experimental and theoretical approaches. The morphologies and property analysis showed that nZVI particles distributed uniformly on the biochar surface, which mainly include  - OH, >CO and COC and CO groups. Different reaction conditions were compared to define the optimal conditions for ciprofloxacin removal in BC/nZVI/H 2 O 2 system. More than 70% of ciprofloxacin was removed in the optimal conditions: acidic condition (pH 3∼4), low doses of H 2 O 2 (20 mM), and temperature of 298 K. The hydroxyl radical ( • OH) oxidation was the primary pathway in BC/nZVI/H 2 O 2 degradation of ciprofloxacin process. The theoretical calculation indicated that hydrogen atom abstraction (HAA) pathways were the dominant oxidation pathways contributing 92.3% in overall second‒order rate constants (k) of • OH and ciprofloxacin. The current results are valuable to evaluate the application of BC/nZVI activating H 2 O 2 degradation of ciprofloxacin and other fluoroquinolone antibiotics in water treatment plants., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Purpose: The lifetime risk of renal damage in children with spina bifida is high but only limited baseline imaging data are available for this population. We evaluated a large prospective cohort of infants with spina bifida to define their baseline imaging characteristics., Materials and Methods: The UMPIRE Protocol for Young Children with Spina Bifida is an iterative quality improvement protocol that follows a cohort of newborns at 9 United States centers. Using descriptive statistics, we report the initial baseline imaging characteristics, specifically regarding renal bladder ultrasound, cystogram and dimercaptosuccinic acid nuclear medicine scan., Results: Data on 193 infants from 2015 to 2018 were analyzed. Renal-bladder ultrasound was normal in 55.9% of infants, while 40.4% had Society for Fetal Urology grade 1 to 2 hydronephrosis in at least 1 kidney, 3.7% had grade 3 to 4 hydronephrosis in either kidney and 21.8% had grade 1 or higher bilateral hydronephrosis. There was no vesicoureteral reflux in 84.6% of infants. A third of enrolled infants underwent dimercaptosuccinic acid nuclear medicine renal scan, of whom 92.4% had no renal defects and 93.9% had a difference in differential function of less than 15%., Conclusions: The majority of infants born with spina bifida have normal baseline imaging characteristics and normal urinary tract anatomy at birth. This proactive protocol offers careful scheduled surveillance of the urinary tract with the goal of lifelong maintenance of normal renal function and healthy genitourinary development.
