Molecule-based selective contacts have become a crucial component to ensure high-efficiency inverted perovskite solar cells 1-5 . These molecules always consist of a conjugated core with heteroatom substitution to render the desirable carrier-transport capability 6-9 . So far, the design of successful conjugation cores has been limited to two N-substituted π-conjugated structures, carbazole and triphenylamine, with molecular optimization evolving around their derivatives 2,5,10-12 . However, further improvement of the device longevity has been hampered by the concomitant limitations of the molecular stability induced by such heteroatom-substituted structures 13,14 . A more robust molecular contact without sacrificing the electronic properties is in urgent demand, but remains a challenge. Here we report a peri-fused polyaromatic core structure without heteroatom substitution that yields superior carrier transport and selectivity over conventional heteroatom-substituted core structures. This core structure produced a relatively chemically inert and structurally rigid molecular contact, which considerably improved the performance of perovskite solar cells in terms of both efficiency and durability. The exploitation of hierarchical carbon nanocages with superior light-to-heat conversion efficiency, together with their distinct structural, morphological, and electronic properties, in photothermal applications could provide effective solutions to long-standing challenges in diverse areas. Here, we demonstrate the discovery of pristine and nitrogen-doped hierarchical carbon nanocages as superior supports for highly loaded, small-sized Ru particles toward enhanced photothermal CO 2 catalysis. A record CO production rate of 3.1 mol·g Ru -1 ·h -1 with above 90% selectivity in flow reactors was reached for hierarchical nitrogen-doped carbon-nanocage-supported Ru clusters under 2.4 W·cm -2 illumination without external heating. Detailed studies reveal that the enhanced performance originates from the strong broadband sunlight absorption and efficient light-to-heat conversion of nanocage supports as well as the excellent intrinsic catalytic reactivity of sub-2 nm Ru particles. Our study reveals the great potential of hierarchical carbon nanocages in photothermal catalysis to reduce the fossil fuel consumption of various industrial chemical processes and stimulates interest in their exploitation for other demanding photothermal applications.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Hyperlipidemia as a major health issue has attracted much public attention. As a geographical indication product of China, Liupao tea (LPT) is a typical representative of traditional Chinese dark tea that has shown good potential in regulating glucose and lipid metabolism. LPT has important medicinal value in hyperlipidemia prevention. However, the active ingredients and metabolic mechanisms by which LPT alleviates hyperlipidemia remain unclear., Aim of the Study: This study aimed to systematically investigate the metabolic mechanisms and active ingredients of LPT extract in alleviating hyperlipidemia., Materials and Methods: Firstly, we developed a mouse model of hyperlipidemia to study the pharmacodynamics of LPT. Subsequently, network pharmacology and molecular docking were performed to predict the potential key active ingredients and core targets of LPT against hyperlipidemia. LC-MS/MS was used to validate the identity of key active ingredients in LPT with chemical standards. Finally, the effect and metabolic mechanisms of LPT extract in alleviating hyperlipidemia were investigated by integrating metabolomic, lipidomic, and gut microbiome analyses., Results: Results showed that LPT extract effectively improved hyperlipidemia by suppressing weight gain, remedying dysregulation of glucose and lipid metabolism, and reducing hepatic damage. Network pharmacology analysis and molecular docking suggested that four potential active ingredients and seven potential core targets were closely associated with roles for hyperlipidemia treatment. Ellagic acid, catechin, and naringenin were considered to be the key active ingredients of LPT alleviating hyperlipidemia. Additionally, LPT extract modulated the mRNA expression levels of Fxr, Cyp7a1, Cyp8b1, and Cyp27a1 associated with bile acid (BA) metabolism, mitigated the disturbances of BA and glycerophospholipid (GP) metabolism in hyperlipidemia mice. Combining fecal microbiota transplantation and correlation analysis, LPT extract effectively improved species diversity and abundance of gut microbiota, particularly the BA and GP metabolism-related gut microbiota, in the hyperlipidemia mice., Conclusions: LPT extract ameliorated hyperlipidemia by modulating GP and BA metabolism by regulating Lactobacillus and Dubosiella, thereby alleviating hyperlipidemia. Three active ingredients of LPT served as the key factors in exerting an improvement on hyperlipidemia. Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the factors influencing dry eye disease (DED)-related ocular symptoms in participants with short fluorescein tear break-up time (FTBUT)., Methods: This cross-sectional study included 82 participants with short FTBUT (<10 seconds). Examinations included Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), FTBUT, average noninvasive tear break-up time (NIBUTave), lid wiper epitheliopathy, lipid layer thickness, blink rate, partial blink, tear meniscus height, and meibomian gland (MG) evaluation which included ratio of residual MG area (RMGA) and MG grade in tarsal plates. One-way analysis of variance was used to detect differences between symptomatic tear film instability group (FTBUT <5 s, OSDI ≥13), asymptomatic tear film instability group (FTBUT <5 s, OSDI <13), and control group (FTBUT ≥5 s, OSDI <13). A bivariate correlation, partial correlation, and multiple linear regression analyses were used to identify major factors. Only the right eye was included., Results: Among the participants with FTBUT <5 seconds, symptomatic group showed less upper RMGA ( P < 0.001) and NIBUTave ( P = 0.010). OSDI was negatively associated with upper RMGA ( r = -0.450, P < 0.001) and NIBUTave ( r = -0.414, P = 0.001), and positively associated with upper MG grade ( r = 0.277, P = 0.027). The skeleton serves as a supportive and protective organ for the body. As individuals age, their bone tissue undergoes structural, cellular, and molecular changes, including the accumulation of senescent cells. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) play a crucial role in aging through the cellular secretome and have been found to induce or accelerate age-related dysfunction in bones and to contribute further via the circulatory system to the aging of phenotypes of other bodily systems. However, the extent of these effects and their underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Therefore, this paper attempts to give an overview of the current understanding of age-related alteration in EVs derived from bones. The role of EVs in mediating communications among bone-related cells and other body parts is discussed, and the significance of bones in the whole-body aging process is highlighted. Current treatments for orthopaedic illnesses frequently result in poor prognosis, treatment failure, numerous relapses, and other unpleasant outcomes that have a significant impact on patients' quality of life. Cell-free therapy has emerged as one of the most promising options in recent decades for improving the status quo. As a result, using exosomes produced from various cells to modulate ferroptosis has been proposed as a therapeutic method for the condition. Exosomes are extracellular vesicles that secrete various bioactive chemicals that influence disease treatment and play a role in the genesis and progression of orthopaedic illnesses. Ferroptosis is a recently defined kind of controlled cell death typified by large iron ion buildup and lipid peroxidation. An increasing number of studies indicate that ferroptosis plays a significant role in orthopaedic illnesses. Exosomes, as intercellular information transfer channels, have been found to play a significant role in the regulation of ferroptosis processes. Furthermore, accumulating research suggests that exosomes can influence the course of many diseases by regulating ferroptosis in injured cells. In order to better understand the processes by which exosomes govern ferroptosis in the therapy of orthopaedic illnesses. This review discusses the biogenesis, secretion, and uptake of exosomes, as well as the mechanisms of ferroptosis and exosomes in the therapy of orthopaedic illnesses. It focuses on recent research advances and exosome mechanisms in regulating iron death for the therapy of orthopaedic illnesses. The spray system mechanism during a gas explosion in an underground square pipeline is complex. In this paper, the underground square of Fuxin City is selected as the research object. FLACS numerical simulation software is used to analyze the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of a gas explosion in an underground square pipeline with an unopened spray system using combustion and combustion rate models. Different spray pressures were compared and analyzed to determine the optimal spray control pressure, and the spray system mechanism was clarified. The results revealed that the gas explosion overpressure is divided into the overpressure gentle, overpressure rising, and overpressure decay stages, corresponding to a trend of rapid growth and slow decline. The influence of spray pressure on the gas explosion exhibits a promotion-inhibition-promotion trend, corresponding to 0-0.2 MPa, 0.2-0.6 MPa, and 0.6-1.6 Mpa, respectively. The peak overpressure and overpressure propagation rates are the lowest at 0.6 MPa, and the explosion suppression effect is the most pronounced. The spray system mechanism varies with the explosion overpressure stages. Osteoclast precursors (OCPs) are thought to commit to osteoclast differentiation, which is accelerated by aging-related chronic inflammation, thereby leading to osteoporosis. However, whether the fate of OCPs can be reshaped to transition into other cell lineages is unknown. Here, we showed that M2 macrophage-derived extracellular vesicles (M2-EVs) could reprogram OCPs to downregulate osteoclast-specific gene expression and convert OCPs to M2 macrophage-like lineage cells, which reshaped the fate of OCPs by delivering the molecular metabolite glutamate. Upon delivery of glutamate, glutamine metabolism in OCPs was markedly enhanced, resulting in the increased production of α-ketoglutarate (αKG), which participates in Jmjd3-dependent epigenetic reprogramming, causing M2-like macrophage differentiation. Thus, we revealed a novel transformation of OCPs into M2-like macrophages via M2-EVs-initiated metabolic reprogramming and epigenetic modification. Purpose: To compare the postoperative rehabilitation of femoral neck fractures treated with robot-assisted nailing and freehand nailing., Methods: We systematically searched the PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI), WanFang database, China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP) and Web of Science databases to identify potentially eligible articles. Indispensable data such as the year of publication, country, study type, robot type, age, number of patients, sex distribution, study design, and outcome indicators were extracted. The outcome indicators of interest included healing rate, length of healing time, Harris score, operation time, frequency of X-ray fluoroscopy, frequency of guide pin insertion, and intraoperative blood loss. RevMan 5.4.1 was used for the meta-analysis., Results: Fourteen studies with 908 participants were included in this meta-analysis. The results showed that in terms of healing rate (SMD = 2.75, 95% CI, 1.03 to 7.32, P = 0.04) and Harris score (SMD = 2.27, 95% CI, 0.79 to 3.75, P = 0.003), robot-assisted screw placement technique scores were higher than the traditional freehand technique. Additionally, operative time (SMD = -12.72, 95% CI, -19.74 to -5.70, P = 0.0004), healing time (SMD = -13.63, 95% CI, -20.18 to -7.08, P < 0.0001), frequency of X-ray fluoroscopy (SMD = - 13.64, 95% CI, - 18.32 to - 8.95, P < 0.00001), frequency of guide pin insertion (SMD = - 7.95, 95% CI, - 10.13 to - 5.76, P < 0.00001), and intraoperative blood loss (SMD = - 17.33, 95% CI, - 23.66 to - 11.00, P < 0.00001) were lower for patients who underwent robotic-assisted screw placement than those for patients who underwent the conventional freehand technique., Conclusion: Compared to the freehand nailing technique, robot-assisted nailing helps improve postoperative healing rates in patients with femoral neck fractures; shortens healing times; better restores hip function; reduces the number of intraoperative fluoroscopies, guides pin placements; reduces intraoperative bleeding; and increases perioperative safety., (© 2024. Improving the solar-to-thermal energy conversion efficiency of photothermal nanomaterials at no expense of other physicochemical properties, e.g., the catalytic reactivity of metal nanoparticles, is highly desired for diverse applications but remains a big challenge. Herein, a synergistic strategy is developed for enhanced photothermal conversion by a greenhouse-like plasmonic superstructure of 4 nm cobalt nanoparticles while maintaining their intrinsic catalytic reactivity. The silica shell plays a key role in retaining the plasmonic superstructures for efficient use of the full solar spectrum, and reducing the heat loss of cobalt nanoparticles via the nano-greenhouse effect. The optimized plasmonic superstructure catalyst exhibits supra-photothermal CO 2 methanation performance with a record-high rate of 2.3 mol g Co -1 h -1 , close to 100% CH 4 selectivity, and desirable catalytic stability. Facial age recognition has been widely used in real-world applications. Most of current facial age recognition methods use deep learning to extract facial features to identify age. However, due to the high dimension features of faces, deep learning methods might extract a lot of redundant features, which is not beneficial for facial age recognition. To improve facial age recognition effectively, this paper proposed the deep manifold learning (DML), a combination of deep learning and manifold learning. In DML, deep learning was used to extract high-dimensional facial features, and manifold learning selected age-related features from these high-dimensional facial features for facial age recognition. Finally, we validated the DML on Multivariate Observations of Reactions and Physical Health (MORPH) and Face and Gesture Recognition Network (FG-NET) datasets. The results indicated that the mean absolute error (MAE) of MORPH is 1.60 and that of FG-NET is 2.48. Moreover, compared with the state of the art facial age recognition methods, the accuracy of DML has been greatly improved.

Conductive hydrogels have received widespread attention in the field of flexible sensors. However, a single network structure inside the hydrogel sensor usually makes it difficult to bear larger mechanical loadings, greatly limiting practical applications. Developing a recoverable conductive hydrogel sensor with high toughness and adaptability is still challenging. Herein, a high-performance polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based conductive composite hydrogel was constructed, assisted by green cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), magnesium chloride (MgCl 2 ), ethylene glycol (EG), and liquid metal (LM). The synergistic effects between CNFs and LM enhanced the network structure inside the recoverable hydrogel. This resulted in an excellent tensile strength of 3.86 MPa with an elongation at break of as high as 918.4 % and compressive strength of 4.04 MPa at 80 % strain. In addition, the conductive network composed of MgCl 2 and LM endowed the hydrogel good electrical conductivity. Moreover, it could be used as a flexible strain sensor for various application scenarios, e.g., micro-stress monitoring (water droplet falling) and information encryption transmission of Morse code. The low-temperature impact toughness of nodular cast iron can be significantly enhanced by heat treatment, and thus meet the severe service requirements in the fields of high-speed rail and power generation, etc. In order to explore the enhancement mechanism, microstructure, hardness, composition and other characteristics of as-cast and heat-treated nodular cast iron is systematically tested and compared by optical microscopy, microhardness tester, EBSD, SEM, electron probe, and impact toughness testing machine in this study. The results show that heat treatment has little effect on the morphology and size of graphite in nodular cast iron, ignores the effect on the grain size, morphology, and distribution of ferritic matrix, and has little effect on the hardness and exchange of elements, while it is meaningful to find that heat treatment brings about significant decrease in high-angle grain boundaries (HAGB) between 59° and 60°, decreasing from 10% to 3%. Therefore, the significant enhancement of low-temperature impact toughness of nodular cast iron by heat treatment may result from the obvious decrease in HAGB between 59° and 60°, instead of other reasons. From this perspective, the study can provide novel ideas for optimizing the heat treatment process of nodular cast iron.

Nowadays, functional electronic devices with excellent flexibility and thermal management capability for effective electromagnetic wave absorption are urgently in demand. Herein, a novel and highly flexible silver nanowire (AgNW)/iron nanowire (FeNW) decorated melamine composite foam (AgFe-MF) was prepared via simple dip-coating process. Owing to optimal impedance matching, synergistic dielectric and magnetic losses as well as three-dimensional porous structure, the AgFe-MF with an ultra-low filler content (0.22 vol%) exhibited an outstanding minimum reflection loss of -69.61 dB, and the best effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) could reach up to 6.37 GHz. Importantly, the EAB of long-time working AgFe-MF was enhanced to 7.01 GHz after 1000 compress-release cycles under 40 % strain. Besides, it also featured considerate Joule heating capacity and achieved a saturation temperature of over 85.7 ℃ under 2.6 V voltage. The impressive thermal isolation and long-term stability ensured the safety used as portable heater. A multi-objective pedestrian tracking method based on you only look once-v8 (YOLOv8) and the improved simple online and real time tracking with a deep association metric (DeepSORT) was proposed with the purpose of coping with the issues of local occlusion and ID dynamic transformation that frequently arise when tracking target pedestrians in real complex traffic scenarios. To begin with, in order to enhance the feature extraction network's capacity to learn target feature information in busy traffic situations, the detector implemented the YOLOv8 method with a high level of small-scale feature expression. In addition, the omni-scale network (OSNet) feature extraction network was then put on top of DeepSORT in order to accomplish real-time synchronized target tracking. This increases the effectiveness of picture edge recognition by dynamically fusing the collected feature information at various scales. Furthermore, a new adaptive forgetting smoothing Kalman filtering algorithm (FSA) was created to adapt to the nonlinear condition of the pedestrian trajectory in the traffic scene in order to address the issue of poor prediction attributed to the linear state equation of Kalman filtering once more. Afterward, the original intersection over union (IOU) association matching algorithm of DeepSORT was replaced by the complete-intersection over union (CIOU) association matching algorithm to fundamentally reduce the target pedestrians' omission and misdetection situation and to improve the accuracy of data matching. Eventually, the generalized trajectory feature extractor model (GFModel) was developed to tightly merge the local and global information through the average pooling operation in order to get precise tracking results and further decrease the impact of numerous disturbances on target tracking. The fusion algorithm of YOLOv8 and improved DeepSORT method based on OSNet, FSA and GFModel was named YOFGD. According to the experimental findings, YOFGD's ultimate accuracy can reach 77.9% and its speed can reach 55.8 frames per second (FPS), which is more than enough to fulfill the demands of real-world scenarios.

Objective: To summarize the influence of microstructure on performance of triply-periodic minimal surface (TPMS) bone scaffolds., Methods: The relevant literature on the microstructure of TPMS bone scaffolds both domestically and internationally in recent years was widely reviewed, and the research progress in the imfluence of microstructure on the performance of bone scaffolds was summarized., Results: The microstructure characteristics of TPMS bone scaffolds, such as pore shape, porosity, pore size, curvature, specific surface area, and tortuosity, exert a profound influence on bone scaffold performance. By finely adjusting the above parameters, it becomes feasible to substantially optimize the structural mechanical characteristics of the scaffold, thereby effectively preempting the occurrence of stress shielding phenomena. Concurrently, the manipulation of these parameters can also optimize the scaffold's biological performance, facilitating cell adhesion, proliferation, and growth, while facilitating the ingrowth and permeation of bone tissue. Ultimately, the ideal bone fusion results will obtain., Conclusion: The microstructure significantly and substantially influences the performance of TPMS bone scaffolds. By deeply exploring the characteristics of these microstructure effects on the performance of bone scaffolds, the design of bone scaffolds can be further optimized to better match specific implantation regions.

The crosstalk between the nerve and stomatognathic systems plays a more important role in organismal health than previously appreciated with the presence of emerging concept of the "brain-oral axis". A deeper understanding of the intricate interaction between the nervous system and the stomatognathic system is warranted, considering their significant developmental homology and anatomical proximity, and the more complex innervation of the jawbone compared to other skeletons. In this review, we provide an in-depth look at studies concerning neurodevelopment, craniofacial development, and congenital anomalies that occur when the two systems develop abnormally. It summarizes the cross-regulation between nerves and jawbones and the effects of various states of the jawbone on intrabony nerve distribution. Diseases closely related to both the nervous system and the stomatognathic system are divided into craniofacial diseases caused by neurological illnesses, and neurological diseases caused by an aberrant stomatognathic system. The two-way relationships between common diseases, such as periodontitis and neurodegenerative disorders, and depression and oral diseases were also discussed. Objective: To review the research progress of design of bone scaffolds with different single cell structures., Methods: The related literature on the study of bone scaffolds with different single cell structures at home and abroad in recent years was extensively reviewed, and the research progress was summarized., Results: The single cell structure of bone scaffold can be divided into regular cell structure, irregular cell structure, cell structure designed based on topology optimization theory, and cell structure designed based on triply periodic minimal surface. Different single cell structures have different structural morphology and geometric characteristics, and the selection of single cell structure directly determines the mechanical properties and biological properties of bone scaffold. It is very important to choose a reasonable cell structure for bone scaffold to replace the original bone tissue., Conclusion: Bone scaffolds have been widely studied, but there are many kinds of bone scaffolds at present, and the optimization of single cell structure should be considered comprehensively, which is helpful to develop bone scaffolds with excellent performance and provide effective support for bone tissue.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a highly malignant tumor with high incidence and mortality rates. Aging-related genes are closely related to the occurrence and development of cancer. Therefore, it is of great significance to evaluate the prognosis of HCC patients by constructing a model based on aging-related genes., Method: Non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) clustering analysis was used to cluster the samples. The correlation between the risk score and immune cells, immune checkpoints, and Mismatch Repair (MMR) was evaluated through Spearman correlation test. Real Time Quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) and immunohistochemistry were used to validate the expression levels of key genes in tissue and cells for the constructed model., Result: By performing NMF clustering, we were able to effectively group the liver cancer samples into two distinct clusters. Considering the potential correlation between aging-related genes and the prognosis of liver cancer patients, we used aging-related genes to construct a prognostic model. Spearman correlation analysis showed that the model risk score was closely related to MMR and immune checkpoint expression. Drug sensitivity analysis also provided guidance for the clinical use of chemotherapy drugs. RT-qPCR showed that TFDP1, NDRG1, and FXR1 were expressed at higher levels in different liver cancer cell lines compared to normal liver cells., Conclusion: In summary, we have developed an aging-related model to predict the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma and guide clinical drug treatment for different patients.

Sudden changes in the morphological characteristics of trees are closely related to plant health, and automated phenotypic measurements can help improve the efficiency of plant health monitoring, and thus aid in the conservation of old and valuable tress. The irregular distribution of branches and the influence of the natural environment make it very difficult to monitor the status of branches in the field. In order to solve the problem of branch phenotype monitoring of tall and valuable plants in the field environment, this paper proposes an improved UNet model to achieve accurate extraction of trunk and branches. This paper also proposes an algorithm that can measure the branch length and inclination angle by using the main trunk and branches separated in the previous stage, finding the skeleton line of a single branch via digital image morphological processing and the Zhang-Suen thinning algorithm, obtaining the number of pixel points as the branch length, and then using Euclidean distance to fit a straight line to calculate the inclination angle of each branch. These were carried out in order to monitor the change in branch length and inclination angle and to determine whether plant branch breakage or external stress events had occurred. We evaluated the method on video images of Abies beshanzuensis , and the experimental results showed that the present algorithm has more excellent performance at 94.30% MIoU as compared with other target segmentation algorithms. The coefficient of determination (R 2 ) is higher than 0.89 for the calculation of the branch length and inclination angle. In summary, the algorithm proposed in this paper can effectively segment the branches of tall plants and measure their length and inclination angle in a field environment, thus providing an effective method to monitor the health of valuable plants.

The effect of ambient temperature on health continues to draw more and more attention with the global warming. Bacillary dysentery (BD) is a major global environmental health issue and affected by temperature and other environmental variables. In the current study, we evaluated the effect of temperature on the incidence of BD from January 1st, 2008 to December 31st, 2011 in Jiayuguan, a temperate continental arid climate city in the Hexi Corridor of northwest China. A distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) was performed to evaluate the lag effect of temperature on BD up to 30 days. Results showed the risk of BD increased with temperature significantly, especially after 8 °C. The maximum risk of BD was observed at extreme high temperature (29 °C). The effect of temperature on BD risk was significantly divided into short-term effect at lag 5 days and long-term effect at lag 30 days. Age ≤ 15 years were most affected by high temperature. The maximum cumulative risk for lag 30 days (25.8, 95% CIs: 11.8-50.1) was observed at 29 °C. Age ≤ 15 years and females showed short-term effect at lag 5 days and long-term effect at lag 30 days, while age > 15 years and males showed acute short-term effect at lag 0 and light long-term effect at lag 16 days., (© 2023. Increasing studies have reported temperature modification effects on air pollutants-induced respiratory diseases. In the current study, daily data of respiratory emergency room visits (ERVs), meteorological factors, and concentrations of air pollutants were collected from 2013 to 2016 in Lanzhou, a northwest city in China. Daily average temperature was stratified into low (≤ 25 percentile, P 25 ), medium (25-75 percentile, P 25 -P 75 ) and high (≥ 75 percentile, P 75 ) to explore how temperature modifies the effects of air pollutants (PM 2.5 , PM 10 , SO 2 , and NO 2 ) on respiratory ERVs by using generalized additive Poisson regression model (GAM). Seasonal modification was also investigated. Results showed that (a) PM 10 , PM 2.5 , and NO 2 had the strongest effects on respiratory ERVs in low temperature; (b) males and 15-and-younger were more vulnerable in low temperature while females and those older than 46 years were highly affected in high temperature; (c) PM 10 , PM 2.5 , and NO 2 were mostly associated with the total and both males and females in winter, while SO 2 resulted in the highest risk for the total and males in autumn and females in spring. Purpose: To examine the clinical and pathological features, laboratory markers, therapeutic options and risk factors indicating poor prognosis of hydroa vacciniforme-like lymphoproliferative disorder (HVLPD)., Patients and Methods: Seven patients with HVLPD had their clinical and pathological data collected. Immunohistochemical staining, Epstein-Barr virus-encoded RNA (EBER) in situ hybridization experiments, T-cell receptor (TCR) gene rearrangement, RT-PCR tests and the Elisa assay were carried out., Results: The main clinical manifestations were papulovesicular lesions and ulcers on the face, neck, or trunk. Five cases had systemic symptoms. Three of the deceased patients had significant facial edema, deep body necrosis, and ulceration. The pathological results demonstrated that lymphocytes infiltrated blood vessels and sweat glands in addition to the dermis and subcutaneous tissues. All patients tested positive for CD3 and EBER. Six cases tested positive for TCRβF1, but none tested positive for TCRδ. TCRγ monoclonal rearrangement, strongly positive expression of TIA-1 and a Ki67 proliferation index of 40% occurred in 3 fatal cases. When compared to the survival group, the plasma EBV DNA in the deceased group was considerably higher ( P <0.05). IFN-γ and TNF-α cytokine levels in patients were higher than in the control group, particularly in the deceased group ( P <0.05). The skin lesions on all patients recovered quickly underwent conservative care. Nonetheless, 3 patients passed away as the disease progressed in its latter stages., Conclusion: In our cases, the main infiltrating cells were T cells and the dominant lymphocyte subclass was αβT cells. Driving metal-cluster-catalyzed high-temperature chemical reactions by sunlight holds promise for the development of negative-carbon-footprint industrial catalysis, which has yet often been hindered by the poor ability of metal clusters to harvest and utilize the full spectrum of solar energy. Here, we report the preparation of Mo 2 TiC 2 MXene-supported Ru clusters (Ru/Mo 2 TiC 2 ) with pronounced broadband sunlight absorption ability and high sintering resistance. Under illumination of focused sunlight, Ru/Mo 2 TiC 2 can catalyze the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction to produce carbon monoxide from the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide and renewable hydrogen with enhanced activity, selectivity, and stability compared to their nanoparticle counterparts. Notably, the CO production rate of MXene-supported Ru clusters reached 4.0 mol·g Ru -1 ·h -1 , which is among the best reported so far for photothermal RWGS catalysts. Detailed studies suggest that the production of methane is kinetically inhibited by the rapid desorption of CO from the surface of the Ru clusters.

Ambient air pollution has been regarded as an important cause of the morbidity and mortality of respiratory diseases. In the current work, a total of 469,490 respiratory emergency room (ER) visits in Lanzhou, China from Jan 1, 2013 to Dec 31, 2016 were collected. A generalized additive model (GAM) was used to investigate the association between O 3 and respiratory ER visits for the different gender and age subgroups. The results showed that: (a) with per inter-quartile range (IQR) (31 µg/m 3 ) increase in O 3 , the greatest relative risk (RR) of respiratory ER visits for the total was 1.014 (95% CI 1.008-1.020) at lag 4 days. Females and 16-to-45-year-olds were relatively more sensitive to O 3 ; (b) the significant lag effects were found in single-day lag models, with the highest RR values for different groups were observed at lag 3-lag 5 days. The multi-day cumulative lag effects were stronger for the total; (c) in the multiple-pollutant models, the effects of O 3 were generally increased when introducing other pollutants (PM 10 , PM 2.5 , SO 2 and NO 2 ) for adjustment. In this paper, a promising acoustic structure for noise reduction was prepared, in which microperforated nanofibrous resonant membrane together with nonwovens were used. The role of microperforated nanofibrous film, the effect of perforation parameters, cavity and the assembly sequence of the composite fibrous structure on sound absorption performance has been studied. This structure effectively combined the porous sound absorbing, micro-perforated absorbing and membrane resonance mechanisms, which can improve the sound absorbing performance without weight and thickness penalty offering a competitive advantage in noise reduction. In recent years, O 3 pollution had been worsening in China and became a major challenge for human health. To evaluate the O 3 effects on circulatory and respiratory mortality in Harbin, a high latitude city of northeast China, we applied a time-series study from 2014 to 2016. After collecting data and adjusting for the effects of confounders, we built the generalized additive model to assess the associations between O 3 and mortality at different lag days. The results showed that an interquartile-range (IQR) increase in O 3 concentration corresponded to excess risk (ER) of 2.00% (95%CI: - 0.25-4.30%) for circulatory mortality at lag 0 and 8.02% (95%CI: 4.18-12.01%) for respiratory mortality at lag 2 days in the single-pollutant model. Stratified analysis showed that O 3 had a greater effect on females than on males. The effect of O 3 exposure on circulatory mortality was stronger during the warm period, while the opposite trend was founded for respiratory mortality. It is of emerging interest to convert CO 2 and green H 2 into solar fuels with great efficiency through photothermal CO 2 hydrogenation. However, designing photothermal catalysts with improved sunlight harvesting ability, intrinsic catalytic activity, and thermal management to prevent heat dissipation still remains rather challenging. Herein, we report a facile structural engineering strategy for preparing efficient nanoarray-based photothermal catalysts with strong light absorption ability, high metal dispersity, and effective thermal management. Optimizing the 120 μm-SiNCs@Co catalyst allowed it to reach a record high Co-based photothermal CO 2 conversion rate of 1780 mmol g Co -1 h -1 . This study provides insight into the structural engineering of photothermal catalysts for enhanced catalytic performance and lays a foundation for efficient photothermal CO 2 catalysis.

An imbalance in bone homeostasis results in bone loss and poor healing in bone diseases and trauma. Osteoimmune interactions, as a key contributor to bone homeostasis, depend on the crosstalk between mesenchymal stem cell-osteoblast (MSC-OB) and monocyte-macrophage (MC-Mφ) lineages. Currently, extracellular vesicles (EVs) are considered to be involved in cell-to-cell communication and represent a novel avenue to enhance our understanding of bone homeostasis and to develop novel diagnostic and therapeutic options. In this comprehensive review, we aim to present recent advances in the study of the effect of MC-Mφ-derived EVs on osteogenesis and the regulatory effects of MSC-OB-derived EVs on the differentiation, recruitment and efferocytosis of Mφ. Furthermore, we discuss the role of EVs as crucial mediators of the communication between these cell lineages involved in the development of common bone diseases, with a focus on osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, bone fracture, and periodontal disease. Previous studies have reported that daily average temperature is connected with respiratory diseases (RD), but proof is limited for the influence of the extreme low temperature on RD in Lanzhou, a northwestern China of temperate area. Generalized additive model (GAM) was built in this work to describe the relationship between daily mean temperature and RD in Lanzhou, China from 2012 to 2017. The results indicated that the exposure-response curve was inverse J-shaped, showing the lower the temperature, the larger the relative risk (RR). The RR of daily emergency room (ER) admissions in P5 extreme low temperature (the temperature below the fifth percentile, etc.) was larger than that in P10. The P5 extreme low temperature has the strongest effect at lag 0, and the RRs were 1.043 (95% CI: 1.030, 1.055) for the total, 1.031 (95% CI: 1.015, 1.046) for males and 1.058 (95% CI: 1.039, 1.077) for females. For different age groups, the largest RRs were 1.026 (95% CI: 1.013, 1.039) for the children (age < 16 years) at lag 5, 1.057 (95% CI: 1.030, 1.085) for the young adults (aged 16-45 years), 1.060 (95% CI: 1.023, 1.099) for the middle-aged (aged 46-60 years) and 1.121 (95% CI: 1.077, 1.166) for the elderly group of age > 60 years. The clinical symptoms of perforating arteries differ, and responses to intravenous thrombolytic therapy are heterogeneous. Here, we investigated the effect of intravenous thrombolytic therapy and the related factors influencing acute perforating and non-perforating middle cerebral artery infarctions. We analyzed 320 patients with acute middle cerebral artery infarction who received alteplase thrombolysis within 4.5 h of onset at two stroke centers from January 2016 to December 2019. Outcome measures included rates of a favorable functional outcome (modified Rankin Scale scores of 0-2), distribution of modified Rankin Scale scores, intracranial hemorrhage, and symptomatic cerebral hemorrhage at 14 days, with comparisons between perforating artery and non-perforating artery cerebral infarction groups. In the perforating vessel disease group, 12 cases (17.4%) of intracranial hemorrhage occurred, with symptomatic cerebral hemorrhage in three cases (4.3%); there were no significant differences between the perforating and non-perforating vessel disease groups (all P > 0.05). In the perforating vessel disease group, the only significant prognostic factor was the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score before thrombolysis (Exp(B) = 1.365; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.124-1.659; P = 0.002), and the only significant risk factor for hemorrhagic transformation was previous perforator disease (Exp(B) = 0.078; P = 0.038). Regardless of whether an acute infarction is perforating or non-perforating, intravenous thrombolytic therapy can yield a favorable outcome. The dynein protein plays a key role in the degradation pathway by attaching to targeted molecules and transporting the autophagosome to the centrosome. Aging plays an important role in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD), but its effect on dynein is not clear. In this study we analyzed behavioral characteristics using the rod endurance test and climbing rod time test in different aged mice (3 months, 12 months, 20 months), and measured protein expression of dynein, α-synuclein, Tctex-1, and LC3 in the substantianigra of the mice by Western blot. The mRNA levels of dynein, α-synuclein, LC3 and Tctex-1 were measured by quantitative real time reverse transcription PCR, and detecting expression of dynein and α-synuclein by immunofluorescence. We found the motor functions of A53T mutant mice, in 12 months and 20 months, decreased more significantly compared with normal mice (p < 0.05). In addition, the expression of dynein, LC3-Ⅱ and Tctex-1 proteins in the substantia nigra of the two groups decreased with age. However, α-synuclein protein increased gradually with age, with significantly higher levels in the PD groups compared with age matched controls (p < 0.05). These results were confirmed by immunofluorescence. Our data demonstrates that dynein and other autophagy proteins change with age, and this is associated with increased α-synuclein. Purpose: The association between atmospheric particulate matter and emergency room visits for cerebrovascular disease were evaluated in Beijing., Methods: A generalized additive model was used to evaluate the associations between particulate matter and cerebrovascular disease, based on the daily data of meteorological elements, PM concentrations, and emergency room (ER) visits for cerebrovascular disease in Beijing from 2009 to 2012. Long-term trends and the effects of holidays, the day of the week, and confounding factors were controlled to determine the lag effect at 0-6 days. Single- and double-pollutant models were employed for different age and sex groups., Results: The effect of PM 2.5 concentration on the number of daily ER visits for cerebrovascular disease was much stronger than that of PM 10 concentration. PM 2.5 and PM 10 had maximum RR values of 1.096 and 1.054 at lag 6 for patients aged 61-75 years. For each inter-quartile range (IQR) increase in PM 10 concentration, the maximum RR values for the total, males, females, aged 15-60 years, aged 61-75 years, and aged > 75 years were 1.024, 1.044, 1.043, 1.038, 1.054, and 1.032, respectively. For each IQR increase in PM 2.5 concentration, the maximum RR values for the total, males, females, aged 15-60 years, aged 61-75 years, and aged > 75 years were 1.038, 1.064, 1.076, 1.054, 1.096, and 1.049, respectively. The RR values of the double-pollutant models were lower than those of the single-pollutant models., Conclusion: This study showed that the effects of PM pollution on cerebrovascular disease were different among different gender and age groups, and aged 61-75 years were mostly sensitive to particulate matters. The effects of PM 2.5 on cerebrovascular disease were stronger than those of PM 10 . We report synthesis and solid-state 17 O NMR characterization of α-d-glucose for which all six oxygen atoms are site-specifically 17 O-labeled. Solid-state 17 O NMR spectra were recorded for α-d-glucose/NaCl/H 2 O (2/1/1) cocrystals under static and magic-angle-spinning (MAS) conditions at five moderate, high, and ultrahigh magnetic fields: 14.1, 16.4, 18.8, 21.1, and 35.2 T. Complete 17 O chemical shift (CS) and quadrupolar coupling (QC) tensors were determined for each of the six oxygen-containing functional groups in α-d-glucose. Paramagnetic Cu(ii) doping was found to significantly shorten the spin-lattice relaxation times for both 1 H and 17 O nuclei in these compounds. A combination of the paramagnetic Cu(ii) doping, new CPMAS CryoProbe technology, and apodization weighted sampling led to a sensitivity boost for solid-state 17 O NMR by a factor of 6-8, which made it possible to acquire high-quality 2D 17 O multiple-quantum (MQ) MAS spectra for carbohydrate compounds. The unprecedented spectral resolution offered by 2D 17 O MQMAS spectra permitted detection of a key structural difference for a single hydrogen bond between two types of crystallographically distinct α-d-glucose molecules. This work represents the first case where all oxygen-containing functional groups in a carbohydrate molecule are site-specifically 17 O-labeled and fully characterized by solid-state 17 O NMR. As one of the most important industrial cities in Northwest China, Lanzhou currently suffers from serious air pollution. This study analyzed the formation mechanism and potential source areas of persistent air pollution in Lanzhou during the heating period from November 1, 2016 to March 31, 2017 based on the air pollutant concentrations and relevant meteorological data. Our findings indicate that particulate pollution was extremely severe during the study period. The daily PM 2.5 and PM 10 concentrations had significantly negative correlations with daily temperature, wind speed, maximum daily boundary layer height, while the daily PM 2.5 and PM 10 concentrations showed significantly positive correlations with daily relative humidity. Five persistent pollution episodes were identified and classified as either stagnant accumulation or explosive growth types according to the mechanism of pollution formation and evolution. The PM 2.5 and PM 10 concentrations and PM 2.5 /PM 10 ratio followed a growing "saw-tooth cycle" pattern during the stagnant accumulation type event. Dust storms caused abrupt peaks in PM 10 and a sharp decrease in the PM 2.5 /PM 10 ratio in explosive growth type events. The potential sources of PM 10 were mainly distributed in the Kumtag Desert in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the Qaidam Basin and Hehuang Valley in Qinghai Province, and the western and eastern Hexi Corridor in Gansu Province. Chemical fibers such as glass fiber and aramid cover a large proportion of sound-absorbing composite materials on the current commercial market. These materials possess superior mechanical properties but have the disadvantages of high production costs and energy consumption and difficult recovery and degradation. In this paper, jute fiber and polypropylene were selected as raw materials, and a series of jute fiber-reinforced polypropylene composite materials were prepared by a mixing-hot-pressing process. The acoustic and mechanical performances of the composites with different fiber contents and fiber residue ratios were discussed. The results showed that the sound absorption coefficient values increased with the increasing fiber content and decreasing residual gum ratio. The mechanical properties varied inversely with the residual gum rate. With the increase of fiber content, the tensile and bending strengths first increased and then decreased. Epidemiological studies have suggested that particulate matter (PM) pollution seriously affects human health, particularly it is closely associated with respiratory diseases. The aim of this study is to quantitatively evaluate the effect of PMs (PM 10 and PM 2.5 ) on emergency room (ER) visits for respiratory diseases in Lanzhou, a valley basin city in northwest China. Based on the data of the ER visits, daily concentration of particulate matters and daily meteorological elements from January 1, 2013, to July 31, 2017, we used a generalized additive model (GAM) of time series to evaluate the exposure-response relationship between PMs and respiratory ER visits. Seasonal modified effects of PM 2.5 and PM 10 on different age and gender groups were also performed. Results showed that the highest incidence of respiratory diseases occurred in winter. Respiratory ER visits for the total were significantly associated with PM 2.5 (at lag 0 day) and PM 10 (at lag 3 days), with relative risks (RRs) of 1.042 (95%CI: 1.036 -1.047) and 1.013 (95%CI: 1.011-1.016), respectively. Effects of PM pollutants on respiratory diseases are different among different age and gender groups. Children under 15 years and the elders over 60 years were the most sensitive to PM pollution, and males were more sensitive than females. Under the global climate warming, extreme weather events occur more and more frequently. Epidemiological studies have proved that extreme temperature is strongly correlated with respiratory diseases. We evaluated extreme-temperature effect on respiratory emergency room (ER) visits for 5 years in Lanzhou, a northwest temperate climate city of China from January 1st, 2013, to August 31st, 2017. We built a distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) to evaluate the lag effect up to 30 days. Results showed the relative risk (RR) of respiratory disease always reached the maximum at lag 0 day and decreased to 1.0 at lag 5 days. Extremely low temperature showed the lag effect of 22 days and the maximum RR was 1.415 (95% CI 1.295-1.546) at lag 0 day. Extremely high temperature showed the lag effect of 7 days and the maximum RR was 1.091 (95% CI 1.069-1.114) at lag 0 day. The elders (age > 65 years) were at the greatest risk to extreme temperatures and the response were very acute. Children (age ≤ 15 years) were at the lowest risk but the lag effect lasted the longest lag days than other subgroups. Males showed longer-term lag effect and higher RR than females. The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) continues to spread worldwide and has led to recession, rising unemployment, and the collapse of the health-care system. The aim of this study was to explore the exposure-response relationship between daily confirmed COVID-19 cases and environmental factors. We used a time-series generalized additive model (GAM) to investigate the short-term association between COVID-19 and environmental factors by using daily meteorological elements, air pollutant concentration, and daily confirmed COVID-19 cases from January 21, 2020, to February 29, 2020, in Shanghai, China. We observed significant negative associations between daily confirmed COVID-19 cases and mean temperature (T ave ), temperature humidity index (THI), and index of wind effect (K), whereas air quality index (AQI), PM 2.5 , PM 10 NO 2 , and SO 2 were significantly associated with the increase in daily confirmed COVID-19 cases. A 1 °C increase in T ave , one-unit increase in THI, and 10-unit increase in K (lag 0-7 days) were associated with 4.7, 1.8, and 1.6% decrease in daily confirmed cases, respectively. Daily T ave , THI, K, PM 10 , and SO 2 had significant lag and persistence (lag 0-7 days), whereas the lag and persistence of AQI, PM 2.5 , and NO 2 were significant at both lag 0-7 and 0-14 days. A 10-μg/m 3 increase in PM 10 and 1-μg/m 3 increase in SO 2 was associated with 13.9 and 5.7% increase in daily confirmed cases at lag 0-7 days, respectively, whereas a 10-unit increase in AQI and a 10-μg/m 3 increase in PM 2.5 and NO 2 were associated with 7.9, 7.8, and 10.1% increase in daily confirmed cases at lag 0-14 days, respectively. This systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to obtain updated evidence regarding the short-term effect of ozone on respiratory mortality in China. We systematically searched the Embase, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Internet, and Wanfang databases for relevant studies. After screening based on the inclusion criteria, 12 studies with 19 estimates were selected for further meta-analysis. The results revealed that respiratory mortality significantly increased by 0.55% (95% confidence interval: 0.24%-0.85%; Q = 39.47, I 2  = 54.4%, P = 0.002, tau 2  < 10 -5 ) for every 10-μg/m 3 increase in the maximum 8-h average concentration of ozone. Furthermore, differences in combined estimates were observed between various regions and lag structures. The combined effect of single-day lags was generally larger than that of multiday lags; the estimate of mortality for the population in the north was larger than that for the population in the south. The sensitivity analysis demonstrated that the main findings were stable; funnel plots with Egger's and Begg's tests indicated no significant publication bias in our analysis., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Particulate matter (PM) has been proved to be a risk factor for the development of circulatory system diseases (CSDs) around the world. In this study, we collected daily air pollutants, emergency room (ER) visits for CSDs, and meteorological data from 2009 to 2012 in Beijing, China. After controlling for the long-term trend and eliminating the influence of confounding factors, the generalized additive model (GAM) was used to evaluate the short-term effects of PM 10 on CSDs and cause-specific diseases. The results showed that for every 10 μg/m 3 increase in PM 10 , the largest effect estimates in ER visits of total CSDs, arrhythmia, cerebrovascular diseases, high blood pressure, ischemic heart disease and other related diseases were 0.14% (95% CI: 0.06-0.23%), 0.37% (95% CI: - 0.23 to 0.97%), 0.20% (95% CI: 0.00-0.40%), 0.15% (95% CI: 0.02-0.27%), 0.18% (95% CI: 0.02-0.35%) and 0.35% (95% CI: - 0.04 to 0.79%), respectively. When NO 2 or SO 2 was added into the model, the effect estimates of PM 10 were mostly attenuated, while in those models with PM 2.5 added, the effect estimates of PM 10 were mostly increased. Stratified analysis indicated that PM 10 had a greater effect on males and the elderly.

Background: Uterine fibroids(UF) are the most common benign tumors in women, with high incidence and unknown causes. We aimed to explore the correlation between Methylenetetra-hydrofolate reductase ( MTHFR ) C677T polymorphism and UF., Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study. Data were collected from 2411 women detected for MTHFR C677T polymorphism in the Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University from 2018 to 2020. B-ultrasound (BU) and the first page of medical records were used to analyze whether they had ever been diagnosed with UF. The collected data were analyzed. Using the chi-square test and regression analysis to explore the correlation, and the risk factors was screened by multifactor logistic regression analysis., Results: A total of 2411 pregnant women were in the MTHFR C677T polymorphism detection. Among them, 226(9.37%) were diagnosed as UF by BU or clinical diagnosis. The allele and genotype of MTHFR C677T were significantly different between the case and control group (p<0.05), and the distribution of the allele was following Hardy-Weinberg (H-W) equilibrium. Comparing with the wild-type ( C/C ), the mutant group ( C/T+T/T ) was more likely to form UF(OR,1.43;OR95%CI,1.07-1.89). After adjusting for confoundings, the heterozygous mutant ( C/T ) was more susceptible to UF than the wild-type (aOR,1.41;aOR95%CI,1.41-1.91). In the case group, BMI, gravidity and parity were not associated with the size and number of UF and the MTHFR C677T polymorphism (p>0.05). However, older maternal age was associated with the incidence of UF, especially the multiple UF (p<0.05)., Conclusion: Our results found that MTHFR C677T polymorphism was associated with UF occurrence for the first time. The major obstacle to treat cervical squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) is the high prevalence of metastasis, which severely affects 5-year survival rate and quality of life for cancer patients. The DEAD-box helicase family has been reported to be a critical mediator in the development and metastasis of various cancers. DEAD-box helicase 19A (DDX19A) is a member of the DEAD-box helicase family; however, its functional role in CSCC is unclear. In this study, bioinformatics analysis of clinical samples from public databases demonstrated that the expression of DDX19A was elevated in CSCC tissues and that high expression of DDX19A was positively correlated with metastasis and poor clinical outcome. Functionally, we found that DDX19A promoted CSCC cell migration and invasion in vitro and lung metastasis in vivo . Mechanistically, overexpression of DDX19A increased NADPH oxidase 1 (NOX1) expression, enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and induced the migration and invasion of CSCC cells. Rescue experiments revealed that DDX19A-induced CSCC functional alterations were dependent on NOX1 and that DDX19A-promoted CSCC metastasis was abrogated upon the inhibition of ROS. The conversion of CO 2 into fuels and feedstock chemicals via photothermal catalysis holds promise for efficient solar energy utilization to tackle the global energy shortage and climate change. Despite recent advances, it is of emerging interest to explore promising materials with excellent photothermal properties to boost the performance of photothermal CO 2 catalysis. Here, we report the discovery of MXene materials as superior photothermal supports for metal nanoparticles. As a proof-of-concept study, we demonstrate that Nb 2 C and Ti 3 C 2 , two typical MXene materials, can enhance the photothermal effect and thus boost the photothermal catalytic activity of Ni nanoparticles. A record CO 2 conversion rate of 8.50 mol·g Ni -1 ·h -1 is achieved for Nb 2 C-nanosheet-supported Ni nanoparticles under intense illumination. Our study bridges the gap between photothermal MXene materials and photothermal CO 2 catalysis toward more efficient solar-to-chemical energy conversions and stimulates the interest in MXene-supported metal nanoparticles for other heterogeneous catalytic reactions, particularly driven by sunlight.

Cardamonin (CD), a naturally occurring chalcone isolated from large black cardamom, was previously reported to suppress the proliferation of breast cancer cells. However, its precise molecular anti-tumor mechanisms have not been well elucidated. In this study, we found that CD markedly inhibited the proliferation of MDA-MB 231 and MCF-7 breast cancer cells through the induction of G2/M arrest and apoptosis. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) plays a pivotal role in the inhibition of CD-induced cell proliferation. Treatment with N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), an ROS scavenger, blocked CD-induced G2/M arrest and apoptosis in this study. Quenching of ROS by overexpression of catalase also blocked CD-induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. We showed that CD enhanced the expression and nuclear translocation of Forkhead box O3 (FOXO3a) via upstream c-Jun N-terminal kinase, inducing the expression of FOXO3a and its target genes, including p21, p27, and Bim. This process led to the reduction of cyclin D1 and enhancement of activated caspase-3 expression. The addition of NAC markedly reversed these effects, knockdown of FOXO3a using small interfering RNA also decreased CD-induced G2/M arrest and apoptosis. In vivo, CD efficiently suppressed the growth of MDA-MB 231 breast cancer xenograft tumors. The strain of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars at high temperatures is currently difficult to measure. To overcome this difficulty, a method of smart FRP bars embedded with optical fibers was proposed and studied, in which an ordinary single-mode optical fiber was applied as a distributed sensor. In this paper, both the distributed temperature and strain-sensing characteristics of optical fiber were studied based on pulse pre-pump Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (PPP-BOTDA) under high temperature. The temperature and strain coefficients were investigated under a thermomechanical coupling environment with consideration of large strain levels. The experimental results show that the temperature and strain coefficients decreased as the temperature increased, because the properties of silica and coating materials changed with temperature. Then, the formulas for determining the temperature and strain coefficients at high temperatures were introduced and discussed. The excellent sensing performance of the optical fiber indicated that smart FRP bars have the potential for use at high temperatures.
