Background: Numerous studies have shown that the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is a reliable substitute marker for insulin resistance. Nevertheless, its correlation with carotid artery plaques (CAPs) among patients with ischemic stroke (IS) remains to be elucidated., Methods: 9248 IS patients hospitalized at the First Teaching Hospital of Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine were grouped according to the quartiles of TyG index. Patients were further stratified by blood pressure status, sex, age and hypertension control status. Employing logistic regression to examine the connection between the TyG index and CAPs.Additionally, analyzing the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve to evaluate the predictive value of the TyG index for CAPs., Results: Participants with an elevated TyG index had an increased prevalence of CAPs. The TyG index was positively correlated with CAPs (OR: 1.26, CI: 1.14-1.40, P<0.001). Compared with normal blood pressure and prehypertensive patients, the TyG index was markedly correlated with CAPs among hypertensive patients (OR: 1.29, 95% CI: 1.15-1.44, P<0.001). Females had a higher OR value than males(OR: 1.31, 95% CI: 1.11-1.54, P=0.001 versus OR: 1.24, 95% CI: 1.09-1.41, P=0.001). Older patients (>60 years) had a higher OR value than their middle-aged counterparts (≤60 years) (OR: 1.35; 95% CI: 1.16-1.58, P<0.001 versus OR: 1.20; 95% CI: 1.05-1.37, P=0.007). Patients with poorly-controlled hypertension had a higher OR value than patients with well-controlled hypertension(OR: 1.36; 95% CI: 1.14-1.63, P=0.001 versus OR: 1.24; 95% CI: 1.07-1.44, P=0.003). After adjusting for potential confounding factors, the area under the ROC curve (AUC) value in the overall population, sex-stratified group, hypertensive patients and hypertension control status-stratified group were all above 0.7 (P<0.01), demonstrating good forecasting capability., Conclusions: In IS patients, the TyG index was significantly associated with CAPs. O3-type layered oxide cathodes are promising for practical sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to their high theoretical capacity, facile synthesis, and sufficient Na + storage. However, they face challenges such as rapid capacity loss and poor cycling stability, mainly attributed to irreversible phase transitions. To address these challenges, a novel cathode material, Li/Sn co-substituted O3-Na 0.95 Li 0.07 Sn 0.01 Ni 0.22 Fe 0.2 Mn 0.5 O 2 (LSNFM), has been designed by regulating the electronic structure, in which Li + activates more redox reactions of Ni 2+/3+ and Fe 3+/4+ above 2.5 V and suppresses the redox reactivity of Mn 3+/4+ below 2.5 V, while Sn 4+ can prevent the charge delocalization in the transition metal layer, contributing to structural stability. Due to this synergistic effect, the as-prepared LSNFM electrode with high structural reversibility displays a 27.2% capacity increase contributed by the high-voltage transition metal ion redox activity and exhibits excellent long-term cycling stability, an 84.0% capacity retention after 500 cycles at 1 C and an 84.7% capacity retention after 2000 cycles at 5 C. The fundamental mechanism is fully investigated using systematic in situ / ex situ characterization techniques and density functional theory computations. This work provides a paradigm for designing long-term cycle life cathode materials by synergistically regulating the electronic structure in practical SIBs.

Extensively-used rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) face challenges in achieving high safety and long cycle life. To address such challenges, ultrathin solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) is fabricated with reduced phonon scattering by depositing the composites of ionic-liquid (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyamide, EMIM:DCA), polyurethane (PU) and lithium salt on the polyethylene separator. The robust and flexible separator matrix not only reduces the electrolyte thickness and improves the mobility of Li + , but more importantly provides a relatively regular thermal diffusion channel for SPE and reduces the external phonon scattering. Moreover, the introduction of EMIM:DCA successfully breaks the random intermolecular attraction of the PU polymer chain and significantly decreases phonon scattering to enhance the internal thermal conductivity of the polymer. Thus, the thermal conductivity of the as-obtained SPE increases by approximately six times, and the thermal runaway (TR) of the battery is effectively inhibited. Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) have been generally regarded as emerging pollutants and received worldwide attention in recent years. Water and food consumption are the primary pathways for human exposure to MPs/NPs, thus gastrointestinal tracts may be susceptible to their toxicity. Although the recent report has indicated the presence of MPs/NPs in multiple human organs, little is known about their gastric effects. Therefore, this study focused on the adverse effects of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on gastric epithelium in vivo and in vitro. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) revealed the distribution of PS-MPs was associated with their particle sizes, and predominantly concentrated in gastric tissues. Gastric barrier injury and mitochondrial damage were observed in rats after exposure to PS-MPs. Compared with the larger ones, polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) more significantly reduced the activity of antioxidant enzymes while enhancing the level of MDA, 8-OhdG and γ-H2AX. Meanwhile, PS-MPs caused upregulation of β-catenin/YAP through redox-dependent regulation of nucleoredoxin (NXN) and dishevelled (Dvl). These findings supported the size-dependent effects of PS-MPs on oxidative stress and DNA damage. Some rare earth elements are occupational and environmental toxicants and can cause organ and systemic damage; therefore, they have attracted global attention. Neodymium oxide (Nd2O3) is a rare earth element that is refined and significantly utilized in China. The long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) H19 is encoded by the H19/IGF2 imprinted gene cluster located on human chromosome 11p15.5. H19 has become a research focus due to its ectopic expression leading to the promotion of fibrosis. However, the mechanisms by which it causes pulmonary fibrosis are elusive. This investigation indicates that biologically active Nd2O3 increases H19, SNIP1, and c-myc, decreases miR-29a-3p, accelerates macrophage M2 polarization, and causes pulmonary fibrosis in mice lung tissues. In macrophage-differentiated THP-1 cells, Nd2O3 (25 μg/ml) enhanced H19, SNIP1, and c-myc, reduced miR-29a-3p, accelerated macrophages M2 polarization, and stimulated fibrogenic cytokine (TGF-β1) secretion. Furthermore, the coculturing of Nd2O3-treated macrophage-differentiated THP-1 cells. And human embryonic lung fibroblast cells activated lung fibroblast, which increases the levels of collagen I, α-SMA, p-Smad2/3, and Smad4, whereas H19 knockdown or miR-29a-3p upregulation in macrophages had opposite effects. Moreover, it was revealed that H19/miR-29a-3p/SNIP1/c-myc regulatory axis is involved in pulmonary fibrosis induced by Nd2O3. Targeting overexpressed thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) in cancer cells to induce oxidative stress has been proved to be an effective strategy for cancer therapy. However, the treatment was hindered by the low efficiency and frequent administration of TrxR inhibitors, and hence more potent TrxR inhibitors were urgently needed. Herein, we designed and synthesized a series of TrxR inhibitors based on arsenicals. Among these, compound 1d inhibited the proliferation of a variety of cancer cells at low micromolar concentrations and exhibited low toxicity to normal cells. Importantly, compound 1d induced the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by inhibiting the TrxR activity, further causing the collapse of the redox system, mitochondrial dysfunction, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and DNA damage, followed by oxidative stress-induced cell apoptosis. In vivo data showed that, compared with the clinical TrxR inhibitor auranofin (AUR), compound 1d could more effectively eliminate tumors by 90 % at a dose of 1.5 mg/kg without any obvious side effects. (1) Objective: Rare earth neodymium oxide (Nd 2 O 3 ) is refined and used extensively around the world, and the occupational and environmental safety of rare piles of the earth has attracted considerable attention. Nd 2 O 3 enters the human body through the respiratory system, reaches various organs through blood circulation, and accumulates to produce toxic effects. At present, little is known about the reproductive toxicity of Nd 2 O 3 . Non-coding RNAs participate in a variety of physiological activities and are very important for spermatogenesis. However, it is unknown whether they are involved in Nd 2 O 3 -induced reproductive toxicity. Therefore, we conducted a pathological analysis, sperm quality testing, and RNA-seq on the testicular tissue of mice exposed to Nd 2 O 3 to find the key genes and regulatory pathways of male reproductive damage and explore the early biomarkers and mechanisms of reproductive damage caused by Nd 2 O 3 . (2) Methods: After exposure of mice to Nd 2 O 3 , we carried out a pathological analysis and RNA-seq analysis for miRNAs/lncRNAs/circRNAs/mRNAs on the testicular tissue of mice, and the total RNAs were used to investigate miRNA/lncRNA/circRNA/mRNA expression profiles by strand-specific RNA sequencing at the transcriptome level to help uncover RNA-related mechanisms in Nd 2 O 3 -induced toxicity. (3) Results: Nd 2 O 3 damaged testis and sperm morphology, significantly decreased the number of sperm, and deformed the sperm head and tail. RNA-seq analysis showed that the expression level of mRNA/miRNA/circRNA/lncRNA in the testicular tissue of mice exposed to Nd 2 O 3 is abnormal. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis demonstrated that the functional enrichment of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and their target genes was closely related to the related pathway of spermatogenesis. Furthermore, some miRNAs/lncRNAs/circRNAs that were greatly upregulated or inducibly expressed, implying their potential value as candidate markers for Nd 2 O 3 -induced reproductive toxicity, help us to further investigate the mechanisms of key genes, key signaling pathways, and inter-gene regulation for Nd 2 O 3 -induced reproductive toxicity. (4) Conclusions: This study provides the first database of a Nd 2 O 3 -induced transcriptome. This information is useful for the development of biomarkers of Nd 2 O 3 -induced reproductive injury and promotes understanding of the reproductive toxicity mechanism of Nd 2 O 3 .

The occupational and environmental health safety of rare earths has attracted considerable attention. In China, the rare earth neodymium oxide (Nd 2 O 3 ) is extensively refined and utilized. However, the mechanisms of Nd 2 O 3 -induced lung injury are elusive. In the present study, we found that exposure of mice to Nd 2 O 3 caused an inflammatory reaction and fibrosis in lung tissues, which was in relation to the Nd 2 O 3 -induced higher levels of the lncRNA H19 (H19), tumor necrosis factor receptor 1 (TNFRSF1A), p-p65, and p-IKKβ and lower levels of miR-29a-3p. Further, in mouse monocyte macrophage leukemia cells (RAW264.7), Nd 2 O 3 induced an inflammatory reaction, increases of H19 and TNFRSF1A levels, decreases of miR-29a-3p levels, and activation of the nuclear factor (NF)-κB signaling pathway. Further, we established that miR-29a-3p regulates TNFRSF1A expression. Up-regulation of miR-29a-3p and down-regulation of H19 blocked the Nd 2 O 3 -induced secretion of TNF-α, MIP-1α, and IL-6; the increases of TNFRSF1A levels; and activation of the NF-κB signaling pathway in RAW264.7 cells. Further, in Nd 2 O 3 -treated RAW26.4 cells, H19 inhibited the expression of miR-29a-3p, which targets TNFRSF1A, and activated the NF-κB signaling pathway to enhance the expression of TNF-α, MIP-1α, and IL-6. Moreover, for mice, up-regulation of miR-29a-3p reversed lung tissue inflammation, pulmonary fibrosis, and activation of the NF-κB signaling pathway induced by Nd 2 O 3 . In sum, the present investigation shows that H19 via miR-29a-3p is involved in lung inflammation and pulmonary fibrosis induced by Nd 2 O 3 , which is a mechanism for the Nd 2 O 3 -induced lung inflammatory response and pulmonary fibrosis. The root of Millettia speciosa Champ. (MSCP) is used in folk medicine and is popular as a soup ingredient. The root is composed of the rhizome and radix, but only the radix has been used as a food. Thus, it is very important to compare the chemical components and antioxidant activities between the rhizome and radix. The extracts were analyzed by UHPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap-MS and multivariate analysis, and the antioxidant activities were evaluated by 2,20-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazo-line-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assays. Ninety-one compounds were detected simultaneously and temporarily identified. Ten compounds were identified as chemical markers to distinguish the rhizome from the radix. The antioxidant activities of the radix were higher than the rhizome. Correlation analysis showed that uvaol-3-caffeate, 3-O-caffeoyloleanolic acid, and khrinone E were the main active markers for antioxidant activity, which allowed for the rapid differentiation of rhizomes and the radix. Therefore, it could be helpful for future exploration of its material base and bioactive mechanism. In addition, it would be considered to be used as a new method for the quality control of M. speciosa .

Stroke is the second leading cause globally that leads to severe disability and death. Stem cell therapy has been developed over the recent years to treat stroke and diminish the mortality and disability rate of brain injuries. Acupuncture, which can activate endogenous recovery via physical stimuli, has been applied to enhance the recovery and rehabilitation of stroke patients. Attempts have been made to combine stem cell therapy and acupuncture to treat stroke patients and have shown the promising results. This prospective review will look into the possible mechanisms of stem cell therapy and acupuncture and intend to undercover the potential benefit of the combined therapy. It intends to bridge the modern emerging stem cell therapy and traditional acupuncture at cellular and molecular levels and to demonstrate the potential benefit to improve clinical outcomes., (© 2022. Background: Acupuncture therapy has been widely used as an alternative therapy to treat multiple diseases, such as sequelae of stroke, pain, facial paralysis and so on. In recent years, few adverse events related to acupuncture treatment have been reported, among which hematoma, bleeding and dizziness are the main manifestations. However, to date, there have been no existing cases reported the association between acupuncture therapy and asymptomatic/pauci-symptomatic hyperCKemia., Case Presentation: We report a patient who developed hyperCKemia during 5 sessions of acupuncture at different frequencies. After stopping acupuncture treatment for 1 month, follow-up showed a significant downward trend in serum creatine kinase (sCK). However, after that this patient started to get acupuncture treatment again in order to improve the sequelae of stroke. Meantime, the sCK rose again., Conclusion: HyperCKemia may associated with acupuncture therapy. Background: Parkinson disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disease among middle-aged and elderly people. Clinically, it is a movement disorder characterized mainly by static tremors, kinesia, myotonia, and postural balance disorder. In recent years, an increasing number of clinical reports on moxibustion therapy for PD have been published. Despite this, no systematic review of moxibustion therapy for PD has been undertaken., Methods: Two reviewers will search the following 7 English and Chinese databases online: the Cochrane Library; PubMed; EMBASE; the China National Knowledge Infrastructure; the Wan Fang databases; the China Science and Technology Journal Database; and the Chinese Biomedical Literature Database. Reviewers will search each electronic database for studies published from journal inception to May 2021. Two reviewers will independently conduct clinical study inclusion, data extraction, and risk bias assessment. Any differences in the above process will be resolved through discussion with a third reviewer. Development of thermoelectrics usually involves trial-and-error investigations, including time-consuming synthesis and measurements. Here, we identify the electronic quality factor B E for determining the maximum thermoelectric power factor, which can be conveniently estimated by a single measurement of Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity of only one sample, not necessarily optimized, at an arbitrary temperature. We demonstrate that thousands of experimental measurements in dozens of materials can all be described by a universal curve and a single material parameter B E for each class of materials. Furthermore, any deviation in B E with temperature or doping indicated new effects such as band convergence or additional scattering. This makes B E a powerful tool for evaluating and guiding the development of thermoelectrics. With the acceleration of urbanization, the heat island effect, as a prominent feature of urban climate, has attracted more attention. Differences in urban landscape patterns have an essential impact on the urban thermal environment. The objective of the study is to examine the impact of urban landscape types and patterns on surface temperature. Taking Zhengzhou City, China, as an example, using Google Earth remote sensing images, an urban landscape type map was created, and landscape indices were calculated. The land surface temperature (LST) of the study area was retrieved by the Landsat-8 thermal infrared band. Correlation analysis indicated that the relationships between urban landscape patterns and the thermal environment were as follows: (i) The scale indices (percentage of landscape (PLAND), largest patch index (LPI), edge density (ED), patch density (PD)) of urban landscape types with cooling effect (water body, riverfront area, park, high-rise building) were significantly negative correlated with mean LST of each partition. (ii) Conversely, there were significant positive correlations between the PLAND and LPI of landscape types with warming effect (block, development land, railway land) and the LST of the partition. (iii) The DIVISION index of the four kinds of landscapes with cooling effect was highly positively correlated with LST, and the DIVISION and SPLIT indices of the three kinds of landscapes with warming effect displayed a remarkable negative relationship with LST. Therefore, under the condition of scale control, integrated distribution of landscape with cooling effect, scattered distribution of landscape with warming effect, and reduced connectivity of landscape with warming effect will contribute to effectively alleviating the formation of urban heat islands.

Background: Post-stroke depression (PSD) is a common stroke complication that is characterized by hopelessness, anxiety, disordered sleep, and lowered responsiveness. Rehabilitation and acupuncture treatments are often combined to treat PSD; however, there has been no meta-analysis on their synergistic effect. Therefore, we aim to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the effectiveness of acupuncture and rehabilitation in PSD treatment., Methods: We will search the following electronic databases: PubMed, the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, the Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, China Science and Technology Journal Database, and Wan Fang databases. We will include studies published between the database initiation and May 2020. Two reviewers will separately conduct study selection, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment. Disputes will be settled by consulting a third reviewer. Review Manager Software 5.3 will be employed for this meta-analysis., Results: This systematic review will assess whether acupuncture combined with rehabilitation treatment is more effective than rehabilitation alone in the management of PSD., Conclusion: This systematic review will provide evidence regarding the synergistic effect of acupuncture and rehabilitation treatment for PSD.

Acupuncture is a complementary and nonpharmacological intervention that can be effective for the management of chronic pain in addition to or instead of medication. Various animal models for neuropathic pain, inflammatory pain, cancer-related pain, and visceral pain already exist in acupuncture research. We used a newly validated human pain model and examined whether acupuncture can influence experimentally induced dental pain. For this study, we compared the impact of manual acupuncture (real acupuncture), manual stimulation of a needle inserted at nonacupuncture points (sham acupuncture) and no acupuncture on experimentally induced dental pain in 35 healthy men who were randomized to different sequences of all 3 interventions in a within-subject design. BORG CR10 pain ratings and autonomic responses (electrodermal activity and heart rate variability) were investigated. An initial mixed model with repeated measures included preintervention pain ratings and the trial sequence as covariates. The results showed that acupuncture was effective in reducing pain intensity when compared to no acupuncture (β = -.708, P = .002), corresponding to a medium Cohen's d effect size of .56. The comparison to the sham acupuncture revealed no statistically significant difference. No differences in autonomic responses between real and sham acupuncture were found during the intervention procedures. PERSPECTIVE: This study established a dental pain model for acupuncture research and provided evidence that experimentally induced dental pain can be influenced by either real acupuncture or manual stimulation of needles at nonacupuncture points. Advancing thermoelectric n-type Mg 3 Sb 2 alloys requires both high carrier concentration offered by effective doping and high carrier mobility enabled by large grains. Existing research usually involves chalcogen doping on the anion sites, and the resultant carrier concentration reaches ≈3 × 10 19 cm -3 or below. This is much lower than the optimum theoretically predicted, which suggets that further improvements will be possible once a highly efficient dopant is found. Yttrium, a trivalent dopant, is shown to enable carrier concentrations up to and above ≈1 × 10 20 cm -3 when it is doped on the cation site. Such carrier concentration allows for in-depth understand of the electronic transport properties over a broad range of carrier concentrations, based on a single parabolic band approximation. As well as reasonably high carrier mobility in coarse-grain materials sintered by hot deforming and fusing of large pieces of ingots synthesized by melting, higher thermoelectric performance than earlier experimentally reported for n-type Mg 3 Sb 2 is found. In particular, the thermoelectric figure of merit, zT, is even higher than that of any known n-type thermoelectric, including Bi 2 Te 3 alloys, within 300-500 K. Over the past years, thermoelectric Mg 3 Sb 2 alloys particularly in n-type conduction, have attracted increasing attentions for thermoelectric applications, due to the multivalley conduction band, abundance of constituents, and less toxicity. However, the high vapor pressure, causticity of Mg, and the high melting point of Mg 3 Sb 2 tend to cause the inclusion in the materials of boundary phases and defects that affect the transport properties. In this work, a utilization of tantalum-sealing for melting enables n-type Mg 3 Sb 2 alloys to show a substantially higher mobility than ever reported, which can be attributed to the purification of phases and to the coarse grains. Importantly, the inherently high mobility successfully enables the thermoelectric figure of merit in optimal compositions to be highly competitive to that of commercially available n-type Bi 2 Te 3 alloys and to be higher than that of other known n-type thermoelectrics at 300-500 K. Xingnao Kaiqiao (XNKQ) acupuncture is an acupuncture technique used for stroke patients. In 24 healthy volunteers, we applied this complex acupuncture intervention, which consists of a manual needle-stimulation on five acupuncture points (DU26 unilaterally, PC6, and SP6 bilaterally). XNKQ was compared to three control conditions: (1) insertion of needles on the XNKQ acupuncture points without stimulation, (2) manual needle-stimulation on five nearby non-acupuncture points, and (3) insertion of needles on the non-acupuncture points without stimulation. In a within-subject design, we investigated functional connectivity changes in resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) by means of the data-driven eigenvector centrality (EC) approach. With a 2 × 2 factorial within-subjects design with two-factor stimulation (stimulation vs. non-stimulation) and location (acupuncture points vs. non-acupuncture points), we found decreased EC in the precuneus after needle-stimulation (stimulation

Worldwide, stroke is the leading cause of mortality and disability, with hypertension being an independent risk factor for a secondary stroke. Acupuncture for the treatment of hypertension gains more attention in alternative and complementary medicine, but the results are inconsistent. Few studies regarding the secondary prevention of stroke by managing hypertension with acupuncture have been carried out as there are some problems regarding the antihypertensive drug status in the secondary prevention of stroke. Still, the potential of acupuncture in regulating the blood pressure for secondary stroke prevention deserves our focus. This review is based on papers recorded in the PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases, from their inception until March 28, 2017, and retrieved with the following search terms: hypertension and acupuncture, limited in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs), stress-induced (or cold-induced) hypertensive or pre-hypertensive models. We find that, in these hypertensive animals, acupuncture could mainly influence factors related to the nervous system, oxidative stress, the endocrine system, cardiovascular function, and hemorheology, which are closely associated with the stroke outcome. This trend may give us a hint that acupuncture might well participate in the secondary prevention of stroke through these pathways when used in the management of hypertension., (© 2018 S. Background: Xingnao Kaiqiao acupuncture involves needling of the Neiguan (PC6), Renzhong (DU26), and Sanyinjiao (SP6) acupoints. The technique has a significant clinical effect in many neurological diseases. In the present report, we have developed a protocol for a scientific trial to analyze whether Xingnao Kaiqiao can be used to treat gastrointestinal dysfunction after laparoscopic surgery. In this context, we intend to execute a double-blind, randomized controlled trial to assess the efficacy and safety of Xingnao Kaiqiao acupuncture via intradermal needling., Methods/design: This will be a single-center, double-blind, randomized controlled clinical trial. It has been designed on the basis of the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT 2010) guidelines and the Standards for Reporting Interventions in Controlled Trials of Acupuncture (STRICTA). The subjects will be recruited from among inpatients scheduled for laparoscopic surgery at the Department of Minimally Invasive Surgery, Tianjin Nankai Hospital, Tianjin, China. Using random numbers generated in SPSS 19.0, the recruited subjects will be allocated to either the "Xingnao Kaiqiao" group or the sham stimulation group. A specially appointed investigator will be in charge of the randomization. Xingnao Kaiqiao via intradermal needling (or sham needling) will be administered 6 h after laparoscopic surgery, and then every 12 h for a total of six sessions, each of which will last 3 min. The subjects will undergo their first evaluation shortly before the first treatment (6 h after laparoscopic surgery); evaluations will be repeated every 12 h until a total of seven evaluations have been completed. The primary outcome will be the time until the first postoperative flatus. The secondary outcomes will be: the time until the first postoperative defecation; levels of abdominal pain, abdominal distension, and nausea; blood ghrelin level; occurrence of vomiting; psychological status; and quality of life., Discussion: This upcoming randomized clinical trial was designed as a standardized method to assess the efficacy and safety of Xingnao Kaiqiao acupuncture using intradermal needles on PC6, DU26, and SP6 in the treatment of gastrointestinal dysfunction after laparoscopic surgery. We aim to provide evidence and thus improve the clinical application of this technique., Trial Registration: Chinese Clinical Trial Registry, ChiCTR-IOR-17010763 . Registered on 2 March 2017.

It has always been considered that Zhenjiu Dacheng ( Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion ) printed by ZHAO Wenbing is the earliest version. In comparative study, it is found that there are two versions in the Ming dynasty, one is the original, stored in the Library of China Academy of Sciences and another one is the revision, stored in the Library of Tianjin University of TCM, Zhejiang Provincial Library and the Library of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. The last item, Chengjiang (CV 24) in the Acupoint Indication of Conception Vessel in volume 7 is included in the revised edition, but not covered in the original one, which is the difference between the two versions. Both of the versions were in the Ming dynasty, rather than the block-printed one in the Qing dynasty.

Objective: To compare the effects between resuscitation acupuncture and pregabalin for thalamic pain and their impacts on plasma P substance (SP) and β-endorphin (β-EP)., Methods: Sixty-four patients were randomly assigned into an acupuncture group and a western medication group, 32 cases in each one. Based on conventional western methods, pregabalin capsule was used orally in the western medication group, 75 mg a time,twice a day; resuscitation acupuncture was applied in the acupuncture group. The main acupoints were Shuigou (GV 26), Neiguan (PC 6), Sanyinjiao (SP 6). Patients with upper limb pain were attached affected Jiquan (HT 1), Chize (LU 5), and Hegu (LI 4); lower limb pain, affected Weizhong (BL 40), Zusanli (ST 36); hea-dache, bilateral Fengchi (GB 20), Wangu (GB 12), and Yifeng (TE 17), twice a day. Treatment was given 6 d a week for 8 weeks in the two groups. The changes of simplified McGill pain questionnaire (SF-MPQ), plasma SP and β-EP were observed before and after 4-week, 8-week treatment, as well as at follow-up, namely, 3 months after treatment. Also, clinical effects were evaluated., Results: The total effective rate of the acupuncture group was 50.0% (16/32) after 4-week treatment, which was similar to 46.9% (15/32) in the western medication group ( P >0.05). While after 8-week treatment and at follow-up, the total effective rates of the acupuncture group were 90.6% (29/32) and 84.4% (27/32), which were better than 65.6% (21/32) and 40.6% (13/32) of the western medication group correspondingly (both P <0.05). After 4-week, 8-week treatment and at follow-up, the pain scores of the acupuncture group were lower than that before treatment (all P <0.05). After 4-week and 8-week treatment, the pain scores of the western medication group were lower than that before treatment (both P <0.05). After 8-week treatment and at follow-up, the pain scores of the acupuncture group were superior to thoseof the western medication group (both P <0.05). After 4-week and 8-week treatment,the contents of plasma SP reduced compared with those before treatment in the two groups (all P <0.05), and plasma β-EP increased (all P <0.05). After 8-week treatment, SP content of the acupuncture group was apparently lower than that of the western medication group ( P <0.05), and β-EP increased more obviously ( P <0.05)., Conclusions: Resuscitation acupuncture can effectively relieve the symptoms of thalamic pain with stable and long-term effect, and it is better than pregabalin. Meanwhile, the acupuncture can increase β-EP and reduce SP.

Based on multiple painless needle insertion skills in clinic combined with own experience, the authors propose the opinion that different painless needle insertion methods need to be used according to the positions where acupoints are. The appropriate needle insertion mean must be selected in accord with the anatomical characteristic of acupoint position, namely, tapping insertion is applied in scalp part, skin-pinching up needle insertion is used in forehead and superficial nerve trunk, fingernail-pressure needle insertion in ocular region and positions where large blood vessels distribute, flying acupuncture insertion in face and finger tip, vibrating needle in occipitonuchal region, quivering insertion in abdomen, quick pricking by single hand in the four limbs and back, and chop acupuncture in palm and pelma. The insertion methods are systematically discussed in terms of preparation, acupoint position, manipulation and attention, etc, so that to provide the reference for painless needle insertion.

Background: Effective control of hypertension is deeply associated with the secondary prevention of stroke. The blood pressure-lowering effect of acupuncture alone is controversial but worthy of exploration, considering the side effects of and the problems of low adherence to drugs., Case Reports: One male patient experienced severe dizziness after overuse of valsartan, which decreased his blood pressure to 110/70 mm Hg. Our acupuncture treatment of 40 sessions alone regulated his blood pressure to about 110/70-130/80 mm Hg, with disappearance of the dizziness after 3 sessions. The second male patient with a suboptimal blood pressure during treatment with 50 mg/day of irbesartan received sole acupuncture treatment of 41 sessions, which decreased his blood pressure to about 120/70-130/80 mm Hg after 6 sessions. The third patient, who refused to take antihypertensive drugs because of their side effects, received acupuncture treatment of 46 sessions over 2 months, which reduced his blood pressure from 150/90 to 120/80 mm Hg. The efficacy continued for 3 months (cases 1 and 3) or 2 months (case 2) post treatment end., Conclusion: Our cases suggest the potential of acupuncture alone to favorably control high blood pressure or regulate low blood pressure in stroke individuals, as a means of secondary prevention of stroke., (© 2016 S. Numerous randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of acupuncture have been conducted in recent years. The results of several studies implied that acupuncture was only a powerful placebo; however, certain studies demonstrated that verum acupuncture had a greater effect than placebo and the mechanisms between a verum acupuncture group and a placebo/sham group were different. Researchers attempted to investigate the inherent factors that may potentially influence the results of trials. Certain problems observed in acupuncture RCTs also occurred in RCTs in other fields, including insufficient sample size, high dropout rates, inadequate follow-up and randomization. The study of acupuncture is so complex that specific methodological challenges are raised, which are frequently overlooked, including sham interventions, blinding, powerful placebo effects (even stronger than an inert pill) and variations in acupuncture administration. The aforementioned problems may contribute to bias, and researchers systematically attempt to solve these problems. The present review aimed to suggest techniques to design high-quality studies, minimize the placebo effect and optimize acupuncture administration in acupuncture studies. If these problems are addressed, then the results of acupuncture studies may be different.

Objective: . To compare the signals of pulse diagnosis of fatty liver disease (FLD) patients and cirrhosis patients., Methods: After collecting the pulse waves of patients with fatty liver disease, cirrhosis patients, and healthy volunteers, we do pretreatment and parameters extracting based on harmonic fitting, modeling, and identification by unsupervised learning Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and supervised learning Least squares Regression (LS) and Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) with cross-validation step by step for analysis., Results: There is significant difference between the pulse diagnosis signals of healthy volunteers and patients with FLD and cirrhosis, and the result was confirmed by 3 analysis methods. The identification accuracy of the 1st principal component is about 75% without any classification formation by PCA, and supervised learning's accuracy (LS and LASSO) was even more than 93% when 7 parameters were used and was 84% when only 2 parameters were used., Conclusion: The method we built in this study based on the combination of unsupervised learning PCA and supervised learning LS and LASSO might offer some confidence for the realization of computer-aided diagnosis by pulse diagnosis in TCM. In addition, this study might offer some important evidence for the science of pulse diagnosis in TCM clinical diagnosis.

Our previous findings have demonstrated that acupuncture at the Taixi (KI3) acupoint in healthy youths can activate neurons in cognitive-related cerebral cortex. Here, we investigated whether acupuncture at this acupoint in elderly patients with mild cognitive impairment can also activate neurons in these regions. Resting state and task-related functional magnetic resonance imaging showed that the pinprick senstation of acupuncture at the Taixi acupoint differed significantly between elderly patients with mild cognitive impairment and healthy elderly controls. Results showed that 20 brain regions were activated in both groups of participants, including the bilateral anterior cingulate gyrus (Brodmann areas [BA] 32, 24), left medial frontal cortex (BA 9, 10, 11), left cuneus (BA 19), left middle frontal gyrus (BA 11), left lingual gyrus (BA 18), right medial frontal gyrus (BA 11), bilateral inferior frontal gyrus (BA 47), left superior frontal gyrus (BA11), right cuneus (BA 19, 18), right superior temporal gyrus (BA 38), left subcallosal gyrus (BA 47), bilateral precuneus (BA 19), right medial frontal gyrus (BA 10), right superior frontal (BA 11), left cingulate gyrus (BA 32), left precentral gyrus (BA 6), and right fusiform gyrus (BA 19). These results suggest that acupuncture at the Taixi acupoint in elderly patients with mild cognitive impairment can also activate some brain regions.

170 SD rats were randomly divided to five groups. Rats in model group, no-acupuncture group, and acupuncture group were subjected to MCAO surgery. Acupuncture group received 3 consecutive acupuncture treatments at a parameter that deep in 2 mm towards apex nasi and thrust/lifted at 3 times per second for 1 minute, while model group and no-acupuncture group were no-intervention control groups. Serious neural functional damage and sharp decrease of cerebral blood flow, obvious infarction volume, increased nestin mRNA expression, and immunopositive cells population (nestin(+), BrdU(+) and nestin/BrdU(+)) were found in MCAO rats which had not been observed in normal group and sham-operated group. However, the damage was attenuated by rat's "self-healing" capacity 3 days after MCAO. And the "self-healing" capacity can be strengthen by acupuncture treatment through increasing cerebral blood flow, neurogenesis, and regulation of gene transcription or GSK-3β and PP2A expression. In conclusion, the present study indicates that the underlying mechanism of acupuncture treatment on neural functional damage caused by focal ischemia injury is a multiple interaction which may involve improved cerebral blood supply, neurogenesis, and regulation of gene transcription or GSK-3β and PP2A expression in MCAO rats.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Danqipiantan capsule (DPC) for the treatment of stroke., Methods: PubMed, China Science And Technology Journal Database, Wanfang Database, Chinese periodicals in the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and the General Hospital of Tianjin Medical University's Library were searched until July 2012. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies that reported the use of DPC for treatment of stroke were selected., Results: Eleven articles that included 12 RCTs, and 2 articles that included 3 observational studies were identified. A total of 2590 patients participated inthe studies. We found that there was a signficant statistical difference between DPC treatment groups and the control groups in terms of the effective rate [risk ratio (RR), 1.14; 95% confidence intervals (CI), 1.04, 1.25; P = 0.01], Fugl-Meyer Assessment Scale [weighted mean difference (WMD), 9.77; 95% C (4.84, 14.70); P = 0.00], Barthel Index [WMD = 6.40; 95% Cl (3.15, 9.65)], and mean flow velocity [WMD = 5,79; 95% CI (1.64, 9.94)]. There were no significant differences for The National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale [WMD = 0.60; 95% CI (-1.09, 2.29)], visual field defects [left visual field: WMD = -203.10; 95% CI (-424.41, 18.21); right visual field: WMD = -172.60; 95% CI (-409.29, 64.09)] or the functional independence measure [WMD = -7.90; 95% Cl (-16.64, 0.84)]. Seven articles that included eight RCTs reported the safety of DPC treatment. Two articles that included three observational studies also reported beneficial effects for DPC. Because the Chinese studies were of poor methodological quality, and most of the sample sizes were small, our analysis was likely affected by bias., Conclusion: DPC has a beneficial effect and is relatively safe when used for the treatment of stroke.

The individual difference and non-repeatability in acupuncture have not only restricted the development of acupuncture, but have also affected the specificity of acupoints. The present study used instruments to control needle depth, lifting and thrusting frequency, and the duration of acupuncture. Effects of the quantified acupuncture were observed at Neiguan (PC6) with different stimulation parameters. A frequency of 1, 2, or 3 Hz and duration of 5, 60, or 180 seconds were used to observe cerebral blood flow and ratio of infarct volume recovery. Results showed that stimulation at Neiguan with a frequency of 1 Hz and long duration of 180 seconds or 2/3 Hz and long duration of 5/60 seconds significantly increased cerebral blood flow and decreased the ratio of infarct volume. Interactions between frequency and duration play a critical role in quantified acupuncture therapy.

Evidence from clinical reports has indicated that acupuncture has a promising effect on mild cognitive impairment (MCI). However, it is still unknown that by what way acupuncture can modulate brain networks involving the MCI. In the current study, multivariate Granger causality analysis (mGCA) was adopted to compare the interregional effective connectivity of brain networks by varying needling depths (deep acupuncture, DA; superficial acupuncture, SA) and at different cognitive states, which were the MCI and healthy control (HC). Results from DA at KI3 in MCI showed that the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and hippocampus emerged as central hubs and had significant causal influences with each other, but significant in HC for DA. Moreover, only several brain regions had remarkable causal interactions following SA in MCI and even few brain regions following SA in HC. Our results indicated that acupuncture at KI3 at different cognitive states and with varying needling depths may induce distinct reorganizations of effective connectivities of brain networks, and DA at KI3 in MCI can induce the strongest and more extensive effective connectivities related to the therapeutic effect of acupuncture in MCI. The study demonstrated the relatively functional specificity of acupuncture at KI3 in MCI, and needling depths play an important role in acupuncture treatments.

Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability, affecting millions of people worldwide with almost 80% of them as ischemic stroke and understanding the multiple mechanisms underlying cerebral ischemia is essential for development of effective treatments. To understand metabolic changes induced by focal brain ischemia, we conducted a comparative analysis of metabolic composition of cerebral tissue from rats with sham-operation and middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) using high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. More than 40 metabolites were assigned including organic acids, amino acids, carbohydrates, choline, pyrimidine and purine metabolites. Our results showed that MCAO led to significant level decreases for glutamate, glutamine, aspartate, γ-aminobutyrate (GABA), taurine, malate, fumarate, acetate, phosphocreatine, and purine and pyrimidine metabolites such as inosine, hypoxanthine, xanthine, uracil and UDP/UTP, together with significant level increases for glucose in focal brain tissue extracts. This demonstrated that experimental ischemic stroke in rats caused extensive perturbation in tricarboxylic acid cycle, GABA shunt, and metabolisms of choline and nucleic acids. These findings provided essential information for our understandings of MCAO-caused biochemical alterations and demonstrated the metabolite composition analysis as a useful tool for understanding the neurochemistry of stroke., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier B.V. It is known that ischemic cerebrovascular disease is causing enormous harm to human health on account of the resultant high morbidity and disability rate. In this connexion, the anticipated target is to control the size of focal ischemic cerebral infarction, which is also an important method for judgment of therapeutic efficacy. The key question is to survey the size accurately and objectively; at the same time, the quantitative analysis of focal ischemic cerebral infarction is the pivotal question affecting the experiment conclusion and the reliability level. In this paper are introduced and summarized the methods being recently and commonly used in survey and computation, and the studies made on quantitative analysis of focal ischemic cerebral infarction by 2, 3, 5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) staining method. Also are summarized the principles of dyeing in TTC method, the preparatory work, and the commonly used method of surveying and computation. It is the intent of this review to provide relevant data and suggestion for research workers.

This animal experiment was made to probe into the mechanism by which traditional Chinese medicine interferes with the meningeal nuclear factor of rats suffering from migraine. The adult SD rats were selected, and the Cristina Tassorelli method was adopted for the preparation of the migraine models, which were classified into the normal group, model group and traditional Chinese medicine group respectively, and the latter two groups were further divided, in terms of intervals, into 0.5 h, 1.5 h, 2.5 h and 4 h groups, with the model group as control. Real-time quantitative RT-PCR technology was employed to test and measure the gene expression of meningeal nuclear factor of rats. The results showed that when the level of NF-kappaB mRNA expression in the model group was compared with that in 0.5 h group, 1.5 h group and 2.5 h group, there was no significant difference (P > 0.05), but when compared with that in the 4h group, there was significant difference (P < 0.05). Intervention by traditional Chinese medicine in the gene expression of meningeal nuclear factor of model rats suffering from migraine can restrain at different degree the expression of abnormally increasing miningeal nuclear factor NF-kappaB mRNA, which suggests that the intervention by traditional Chinese medicine may enable improvement and treatment of the obstacle of the constriction and dilation system of cerebral blood vessels through restraining excessive expression of meningeal NF-kappaB genes. This conclusion could serve as a theoretical basis for developing traditional Chinese medicine, which takes the NF-kappaB as the target point and the treatment time window, and have underpins an objective approach to the clinical treatment of migraine.

The effects of aging and acupuncture on brain MT1 and MT3 mRNA levels in senescence-accelerated mice (SAMP10) and accelerated senescence resistant mice (SAMR1) were analyzed by Northern blot analysis. Both MT1 and MT3 mRNA levels in SAMR1 were increased significantly from birth to month 4 and decreased gradually thereafter. In SAMP10, the MT3 mRNA level followed the same pattern as in SAMR1 before month 4, then decreased from month 4 to 6, but was over-expressed and exceeded the previous level at month 8. The MT1 mRNA expression in SAMP10 showed a zigzag pattern. Of two groups of SAMP10 mice treated with acupuncture, the xingnao group (PC6 and Du26 as acupoints) and the zibuganshen group (BL18 and BL23 as acupoints), both showed a higher MT1 mRNA level and a lower MT3 mRNA level than the age-matched control group. Meanwhile, in both of the acupuncture groups, the ratios of MT3 to MT1 were down-regulated to the normal range. Overall, these results suggested that over-expression of MT3 mRNA and the increase in MT3 to MT1 ratios in SAMP10 were correlated with aging, and could be an important physiological and pathological event in the aging process. Acupuncture altered the expression levels of MT1 and MT3 mRNA and differences between the effects of the two stimulated acupoints were seen. Therefore, maintenance of the balance between MTs mRNA expression and correct MTs concentrations is crucial for brain-endocrine-immune response and normal aging. Acupuncture could improve zinc ion bioavailability, by maintaining the balance between MT1 and MT3 mRNA expression levels and might explain one of the mechanisms by which acupuncture treatments defer aging and treat some age-related neurodegenerative diseases.

The brain is the sea of marrow, stores the cerebral spirit and dominates all the life activities of the human body, which are the basic TCM knowledge about the brain. Based on this knowledge, the pathogenesis of climacteric syndrome is considered as consumption and deficiency of kidney-essence, and incoordination between the brain and kidney. The principle of acupuncture treatment should be soothing the mind and tonifying the kidney.

Objective: To evaluate the effects of acupuncture for treatment of climacteric syndrome., Methods: The 65 cases in this series were randomly assigned to the acupuncture group (N=35) and the control group (N=30), with the former treated by acupuncture and the latter by medication respectively. The therapeutic effects were evaluated by means of the clinical outcome, improvement in the symptom scores and the results of radioimmunoassays., Results: In the acupuncture group, 12 cases were cured, 16 cases markedly effective, and 6 cases improved, the total effective rate being as high as 97.14%. The decrease in the symptom scores, and especially the elevation of the decreased E2 level and the decrease of the increased FSH and LH levels, demonstrated that acupuncture therapy was superior to medication., Conclusion: Acupuncture for regulating the mental activities and reinforcing the kidney is an effective therapy for climacteric syndrome.

In some previous studies, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) to the back was shown to improve non-verbal short-term and long-term memory as well as verbal fluency in patients in the early stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Moreover, the patients' physical, social and affective functions were also improved. In this study, the effects of TENS applied to the face were studied in patients with mild and severe AD. Fourteen patients with probable AD were used as subjects. To evaluate the effects of treatment, the subjects underwent two kinds of neuropsychological tests as well as a pupillary light reflex test. The pupillary light reflex test was chosen because it has been proven to show poorer results in cases of senile dementia. These three tests were carried out before the treatment, immediately after the treatment and 6 months after the treatment. Improvements were seen in subjects in the TENS groups and the effects of treatment were more significant in mild AD patients than in severe AD patients. However, the improvements were not maintained 6 months after the treatment. The possible mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of TENS in AD patients are discussed in this paper.
