The membrane fouling derived from the accumulated dust pollutants and highly viscous oily particles causes irreversible damage to the filtration performance of air filters and results in a significant reduction in their service life. However, it is still challenging to construct high-efficiency and antifouling air filtration membranes with recyclable regeneration. Herein, the fluorine-free amphiphobic micro/nanofiber composite membrane was controllably constructed by integrating click chemistry reaction and electrospinning technique. Low-surface-energy fibers were constructed by a thiol-ene click chemical reaction between mercaptosilane and vinyl groups of polystyrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), combined with hydroxyl-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) during the electrospinning process. The functional air filter is then prepared by the two-layer composite strategy. Because of the advantages of liquid-like fibrous surface and micro/nanofibrous porous structure, SBS/PAN composite membrane simultaneously shows superior antifouling performances of pollutants and filtration efficiency of over 97% PM 0.3 removal. More importantly, the antifouling fibrous membrane still presents a stable and efficient filtration efficiency after multiple washes. Its service life in dust filtration environments is approximately 1.7 times longer than that of the substrate membrane. This work may provide a significant reference for the design of antifouling fiber membranes and high-efficiency air filters with long life spans and reusability.

Recently, solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SDIE) has been developed quickly for low-cost and sustainable seawater desalination, but addressing the conflict between a high evaporation rate and salt rejection during SDIE is still challenging. Here, a spatial confinement strategy is proposed to prepare the gel composite solar evaporator (SCE) by loading one thin hydrogel layer onto the skeleton of a carbon aerogel. The SCE retains the hierarchically porous structure of carbon aerogels with an optimized water supply induced by dual-driven forces (capillary effects and osmotic pressure) and takes advantage of both aerogels and hydrogels, which can gain energy from air and reduce water enthalpy. The SCE has a high evaporation rate (up to 4.23 kg m -2  h -1 under one sun) and excellent salt rejection performance and can maintain structural integrity after long-term evaporation even at high salinities. The SDIE behavior, including heat distribution, water transport, and salt ion distribution, is investigated by combining theoretical simulations and experimental results. Conductive organohydrogels are promising for strain sensing, while their weak mechanical properties, poor crack propagation resistance and unstable sensing signals during long-term use have seriously limited their applications as high-performance strain sensors. Here, we propose a facile method, i.e. , solvent exchange assisted hot-pressing, to prepare strong yet tough, transparent and anti-fatigue ionically conductive organohydrogels (ICOHs). The densified polymeric network and improved crystallinity endow ICOHs with excellent mechanical properties. The tensile strength, toughness, fracture energy and fatigue threshold of ICOHs can reach 36.12 ± 4.15 MPa, 54.57 ± 2.89 MJ m -3 , 43.44 ± 8.54 kJ m -2 and 1212.86 ± 57.20 J m -2 , respectively, with a satisfactory fracture strain of 266 ± 33%. In addition, ICOH strain sensors with freezing and drying resistance exhibit excellent cycling stability (10 000 cycles). More importantly, the fatigue resistance allows the notched strain sensor to work normally with no crack propagation and output stable and reliable sensing signals. Overall, the unique flaw-insensitive strain sensing makes ICOHs promising in the field of wearable and durable electronics.

With the advantages of lightweight and low thermal conductivity properties, polymeric foams are widely employed as thermal insulation materials for energy-saving buildings but suffer from inherent flammability. Flame-retardant coatings hold great promise for improving the fire safety of these foams without deteriorating the mechanical-physical properties of the foam. In this work, four kinds of sulfur-based flame-retardant copolymers are synthesized via a facile radical copolymerization. The sulfur-containing monomers serve as flame-retardant agents including vinyl sulfonic acid sodium (SPS), ethylene sulfonic acid sodium (VS), and sodium p-styrene sulfonate (VSS). Additionally, 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) and 4-hydroxybutyl acrylate are employed to enable a strong interface adhesion with polymeric foams through interfacial H-bonding. By using as-synthesized waterborne flame-retardant polymeric coating with a thickness of 600 µm, the coated polyurethane foam (PUF) can achieve a desired V-0 rating during the vertical burning test with a high limiting oxygen index (LOI) of >31.5 vol%. By comparing these sulfur-containing polymeric fire-retardant coatings, poly(VS-co-HEA) coated PUF demonstrates the best interface adhesion capability and flame-retardant performance, with the lowest peak heat release rate of 166 kW m -2 and the highest LOI of 36.4 vol%. Incorporating outstanding flame retardancy and electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) into polymers is a pressing requirement for practical utilization. In this study, we first employed the principles of microencapsulation and electrostatic interaction-driven self-assembly to encapsulate polyethyleneimine (PEI) molecules and Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets on the surface of ammonium polyphosphate (APP), forming a double-layer-encapsulated structure of ammonium polyphosphate (APP@PEI@Ti 3 C 2 T x ). Subsequently, flame-retardant thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composites were fabricated by melting the flame-retardant agent with TPU. Afterwards, by using air-assisted thermocompression technology, we combined a reduced graphene oxide (rGO) film with flame-retardant TPU composites to fabricate hierarchical TPU/APP@PEI@Ti 3 C 2 T x /rGO composites. We systematically studied the combustion behavior, flame retardancy, and smoke-suppression performance of these composite materials, as well as the flame-retardant mechanism of the expansion system. The results indicated a significant improvement in the interface interaction between APP@PEI@Ti 3 C 2 T x and the TPU matrix. Compared to pure TPU, the TPU/10APP@PEI@1TC composite exhibited reductions of 84.1%, 43.2%, 62.4%, and 85.2% in peak heat release rate, total heat release, total smoke release, and total carbon dioxide yield, respectively. The averaged EMI SE of hierarchical TPU/5APP@PEI@1TC/rGO also reached 15.53 dB in the X-band.

Despite incorporation of organic groups into silica-based aerogels to enhance their mechanical flexibility, the wide temperature reliability of the modified silicone aerogel is inevitably degraded. Therefore, facile synthesis of soft silicone aerogels with wide-temperature stability remains challenging. Herein, novel silicone aerogels containing a high content of Si are reported by using polydimethylvinylsiloxane (PDMVS), a hydrosilylation adduct with water-repellent groups, as a "flexible chain segment" embedded within the aerogel network. The poly(2-dimethoxymethylsilyl)ethylmethylvinylsiloxane (PDEMSEMVS) aerogel is fabricated through a cost-effective ambient temperature/pressure drying process. The optimized aerogel exhibits exceptional performance, such as ultra-low density (50 mg cm -3 ), wide-temperature mechanical flexibility, and super-hydrophobicity, in comparison to the previous polysiloxane aerogels. A significant reduction in the density of these aerogels is achieved while maintaining a high crosslinking density by synthesizing gel networks with well-defined macromolecules through hydrolytic polycondensation crosslinking of PDEMSEMVS. Notably, the pore/nanoparticle size of aerogels can be fine-tuned by optimizing the gel solvent type. Conductive organohydrogels have gained increasing attention in wearable sensors, flexible batteries, and soft robots due to their exceptional environment adaptability and controllable conductivity. However, it is still difficult for conductive organohydrogels to achieve simultaneous improvement in mechanical and electrical properties. Here, we propose a novel "water vapor assisted aramid nanofiber (ANF) reinforcement" strategy to prepare robust and ionically conductive organohydrogels. Water vapor diffusion can induce the pre-gelation of the polymer solution and ensure the uniform dispersion of ANFs in organohydrogels. ANF reinforced organohydrogels have remarkable mechanical properties with a tensile strength, stretchability and toughness of up to 1.88 ± 0.04 MPa, 633 ± 30%, and 6.75 ± 0.38 MJ m -3 , respectively. Furthermore, the organohydrogels exhibit great crack propagation resistance with the fracture energy and fatigue threshold as high as 3793 ± 167 J m -2 and ∼328 J m -2 , respectively. As strain sensors, the conductive organohydrogel demonstrates a short response time of 112 ms, a large working strain and superior cycling stability (1200 cycles at 40% strain), enabling effective monitoring of a wide range of complex human motions. This study provides a new yet effective design strategy for high performance and multi-functional nanofiller reinforced organohydrogels.

The combination of electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance and flame-retardant property is essential for applications in the field of electronics and electrics. To date, there have been few successful cases in achieving such portfolios, due to the different mechanisms and even mutual exclusivity of these two attributes. Herein, an ammonium polyphosphate@chitosan@carbon nanotube (APP@CS@MWCNT) core-multishell hybrid was synthesized by microencapsulation technology. Then, the hybrid was introduced into TPU matrix to fabricate TPU composites, acting as surface layer. Meanwhile, MXene film was used as intermediate layer to construct hierarchical TPU composites. The obtained results showed that after introduction of 1 wt% APP@CS@MWCNT hybrid, the peak of heat release rate (PHRR) and the peak of smoke produce rate (PSPR) of TPU composites decreased by 67.4% and 35.6%, respectively, compared with those of pure TPU. Cotton fabric composites were designed to be protected by fire safe thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composites for developing electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding polymer composites with superior mechanical properties. Herein, the as-prepared MXene was coated onto the fiber surface of cotton and then thermally compressed with TPU composites, which were filled with the sodium dodecyl sulfate modified layered double hydroxides functionalized the short carbon fiber hybrids through melt blending method. Then, a series of highly fire safe cotton/TPU hierarchical composites were constructed by a designed thermal compression technique. For instance, the obtained cotton/TPU hierarchical sample showed greatly reduced peak of heat release rate, peak of carbon monoxide production rate and peak of carbon dioxide production rate of TPU by 50.1%, 52.1% and 55.4%, respectively. Furthermore, the cotton/TPU hierarchical composites possessed the EMI shielding effectiveness of 40.0 dB in the X band and 54.6 dB in the K band. The mechanical property of the cotton/TPU hierarchical composites was also reinforced, where the elongation at break and toughness values of the TPU/SCF/mLDH1/C2 hierarchical composite were 21.47 and 18.30 times higher than those of pure TPU, respectively. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) aerogels with excellent environmentally friendly properties have been considered to replace undegradable polymer foams. However, due to highly flammable, hydrophilic, and worse compression resistance performance, PVA aerogels have always been excluded from practical. Herein, a fire safety and compression resistance PVA/expansible graphene oxide (EGO)/Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) (PGL) aerogel was prepared via the freeze-drying method and electrostatic adsorption of flame retardant. The ice crystals from aerogels were sublimated and left a mass of tree-like pore tunnel structures. Meantime, the compound of EGO and LDHs rendered PGL aerogels high compressive strength of 6.0917 MPa (at 80% of strains), a high specific modulus of 19.16 m 2 /s 2 , and an ultra-low density of 0.059 g/cm 3 . Especially, the as-prepared PGL aerogels showed heat release reduced by 55.4%, smoke release reduced by 54.3%, and the limiting oxygen index reaching up to 31%. Moreover, LDHs also enhanced the interface with PVA/EGO resulting in hydrophobic performance improvement. The proposed enhancements mechanism suggested that (i) chemical reactions between EGO and PVA matrix; (ii) a mass of negative potential sites from the interface of PVA/EGO composites made LDHs sheets easily adsorbing; (iii) oxygen-containing groups from EGO and LDHs absorbed mass of heat during combustion; (iv) the compact char residues on the surface of aerogels acting as barriers suppressed smoke and prevented PVA matrix from further combustion. An abundance of early warning graphene-based nano-materials and sensors have been developed to avoid and prevent the critical fire risk of combustible materials. However, there are still some limitations that should be addressed, such as the black color, high-cost and single fire warning response of graphene-based fire warning materials. Herein, we report an unexpected montmorillonite (MMT)-based intelligent fire warning materials that have excellent fire cyclic warning performance and reliable flame retardancy. Combining phenyltriethoxysilane (PTES) molecules, poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) nanofiber (PBONF), and layers of MMT to form a silane crosslinked 3D nanonetwork system, the homologous PTES decorated MMT-PBONF nanocomposites are designed and fabricated via a sol-gel process and low temperature self-assembly method. The optimized nanocomposite paper shows good mechanical flexibility (good recovery after kneading or bending process), high tensile strength of ∼81 MPa and good water resistance. Furthermore, the nanocomposite paper exhibits high-temperature flame resistance (almost unchanged structure and size after 120 s combustion), sensitive flame alarm response (∼0.3 s response once exposure onto a flame), cyclic fire warning performance (>40 cycles), and adaptability to complex fire situations (several fire attack and evacuation scenarios), showing promising applications for monitoring the critical fire risk of combustible materials. Composite organohydrogels have been widely used in wearable electronics. However, it remains a great challenge to develop mechanically robust and multifunctional composite organohydrogels with good dispersion of nanofillers and strong interfacial interactions. Here, multifunctional nanofiber composite reinforced organohydrogels (NCROs) are prepared. The NCRO with a sandwich-like structure possesses excellent multi-level interfacial bonding. Simultaneously, the synergistic strengthening and toughening mechanism at three different length scales endow the NCRO with outstanding mechanical properties with a tensile strength (up to 7.38 ± 0.24 MPa), fracture strain (up to 941 ± 17%), toughness (up to 31.59 ± 1.53 MJ m -3 ) and fracture energy (up to 5.41 ± 0.63 kJ m -2 ). Moreover, the NCRO can be used for high performance electromagnetic interference shielding and strain sensing due to its high conductivity and excellent environmental tolerance such as anti-freezing performance. Remarkably, owing to the organohydrogel stabilized conductive network, the NCRO exhibits superior long-term sensing stability and durability compared to the nanofiber composite itself. The one-way transportation of liquids plays an important role in smart and wearable electronics. Here, we report an asymmetric nanofibrous membrane (ANM) with unidirectional water transport (UWT) capability by integrating one superhydrophilic MXene/Chitosan/Polyurethane (PU) nanofiber membrane (MCPNM) and one ultrathin hydrophobic PU/Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) layer with a "bead-on-string" structure. The UWT performance shows long-term stability and can be well maintained during the cyclic stretching, abrasion and ultrasonic washing tests. The ANM exhibits negative temperature coefficient and is served as a temperature sensor to monitor the temperature variation of the environment, which can provide efficient alarm signals in a hot or cold condition. When attached on person's skin, the ANM displays a unique anti-gravity UWT behavior. Integrating high flame retardancy and excellent electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding into polymetric materials is extremely necessary, and well dispersing conductive fillers into polymeric materials is still a great challenge because of incompatible interfacial polarity between polymer matrix and conductive fillers. Therefore, under the premise of maintaining integral conductive films in the process of hot compression, constructing a novel EMI shielding polymer nanocomposites where conductive films closely adhere to polymer nanocmposites layers should be a fascinating stratety. In this work, salicylaldehyde-modified chitosan decorated titanium carbide nanohybrid (Ti 3 C 2 T x -SCS) was combined with piperazine-modified ammonium polyphosphate (PA-APP) to fabricate thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) nanocomposites, which were used for construction of hierarchical nanocomposite films by inserting reduced graphene oxide (rGO) films into TPU/PA-APP/Ti 3 C 2 T x -SCS nanocomposite layers through our self-developed air assisted hot pressing technique. The total heat release, total smoke release and total carbon monoxide yield for TPU nanocomposite containing 4.0 wt% Ti 3 C 2 T x -SCS nanohybrid were 58.0%, 58.4% and 75.8% lower than those of pristine TPU, respectively. Besides, the hierarchical TPU nanocomposite film containing 1.0 wt% Ti 3 C 2 T x -SCS presented an averaged EMI shielding effectiveness of 21.3 dB in X band. Enriching and detecting the trace pollutants in actual matrices are critical to evaluating the water quality. Herein, a novel nanofibrous membrane, named PAN-SiO 2 @TpPa, was prepared by in situ growing β-ketoenamine-linked covalent organic frameworks (COF-TpPa) on the aminated polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers, and adopted for enriching the trace polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in various natural water body (river, lake and sea water) through the solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME) process. The resulted nanofibrous membrane owned abundant functional groups (-NH-, -OH and aromatic groups), outstandingly thermal and chemical stability, and excellent ability in extracting PCBs congeners. Based on the SPME process, the PCBs congeners could be quantitatively analyzed by the traditional gas chromatography (GC) method, with the satisfactory linear relationship (R 2 >0.99), low detection limit (LODs, 0.1∼5 ng L -1 ), high enrichment factors (EFs, 2714∼3949) and multiple recycling (>150 runs). Meanwhile, when PAN-SiO 2 @TpPa was adopted in the real water samples, the low matrix effects on the enrichment of PCBs at both 5 and 50 ng L -1 over PAN-SiO 2 @TpPa membrane firmly revealed the feasibility of enriching the trace PCBs in real water. With the depletion of fossil fuel energy and both the slow development and low utilization rate of new eco-friendly energy, finding new ways to efficiently store energy has become a research hotspot. Presently, polyethylene glycol (PEG) is an excellent heat storage material, but it is a typical solid-liquid phase change material (PCM) with a risk of leakage during phase transition. A combination of wood flour (WF) and PEG can effectively eliminate the risk of leakage after the melting of PEG. However, WF and PEG are both flammable materials, which impedes their application. Therefore, it is of great significance to expand their application by forming composites from among PEG, supporting mediums, and flame-retardant additives. This will improve both their flame retardancy and phase change energy storage performance, and will also lead to the preparation of excellent flame-retardant phase change composite materials with solid-solid phase change characteristics. To address this issue, ammonium polyphosphate (APP), organic modified montmorillonite (OMMT), and WF were blended into PEG in specific proportions to prepare a series of PEG/WF-based composites. Both thermal cycling tests and thermogravimetric analysis results demonstrated that the as-prepared composites had good thermal reliability and chemical stability. In addition, during differential scanning calorimetry tests, the PEG/WF/8.0APP@2.0OMMT composite presented the highest melting latent heat (176.6 J/g), and its enthalpy efficiency reached more than 98.3%. The PEG/WF/8.0APP@2.0OMMT composite also exhibited superior thermal insulation performance when compared to the pure PEG/WF composite. Furthermore, the PEG/WF/8.0APP@2.0OMMT composite exhibited a significant 50% reduction in peak heat release rate as a result of the synergistic effect between OMMT and APP in the gas and condensed phases. This work offers a useful strategy for the fabrication of multifunctional phase-change material, which is expected to broaden its industrial applications.

As a universal polymer material, polystyrene (PS) is widely applied in electrical devices and construction. Thus, it is necessary to improve the flame retardancy and electromagnetic shielding properties of PS material. In this work, PS/silicon-wrapped ammonium polyphosphate/Inorganic acid-treated multi-walled carbon nanotubes composites (PS/SiAPP/aMWCNT, abbreviated as PAC) were prepared via methods of filtration-induced assembly and hot-pressing. Morphology and structure characterization demonstrated that SiAPP and aMWCNT had good dispersion in PS and excellent compatibility with the PS matrix. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the addition of aMWCNT to PS improved its thermal stability and carbon-forming characteristics. The peak heat release rate, the peak carbon monoxide production rate, and the peak smoke production rate of the PAC10 composite decreased by 53.7%, 41.9%, and 45.5%, respectively, while its electromagnetic shielding effectiveness reached 12 dB. These enhancements were attributed to the reason that SiAPP and aMWCNT synergistically catalyzed the char generation and SiAPP produced free radical scavengers and numbers of incombustible gases, which could decrease the oxygen concentration and retard the combustion reaction. Therefore, the assembled PS/SiAPP/aMWCNT system provides a new pathway to improve the flame retardant and electromagnetic shielding properties of PS.

In this study, the S modified iron-based catalyst (S-Fe@C) for activating peroxydisulfate (PDS) was fabricated by heating the S-MIL-101 (Fe) precursor at 800 °C. The resulted S-Fe@C composite mainly consisted of carbon, Fe 0 , FeS, FeS 2 , and Fe 3 O 4 , and showed strong magnetism. Compared with Fe@C obtained from MIL-101 (Fe), the S-Fe@C exhibited much higher performance (1.5 times larger) on PDS activation and the S-Fe@C/PDS could rapidly degrade various organic pollutants in 5 min under the attack of the species of SO 4 - ·, 1 O 2 , electro-transfer and Fe(IV). The S element in enhancing the PDS activation mainly involved two mechanisms. Detecting and analyzing of the trace organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the real water has become a big challenge. In this work, a novel functional electrospun nanofiber membrane (PAN@COFs) was synthesized through the in situ growth of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) on a polyacrylonitrile electrospun nanofiber membranes under room temperature and used in the solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME) to enrich trace organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in water. The resulted PAN@COFs composite consisted of numerous nanofibers coated ample porous COFs spheres (~ 500 nm) and owned stable crystal structure, abundant functional groups, good stability. In addition, the enrichment experiments clearly revealed that PAN@COFs exhibited rather outstanding performance on adsorbing the trace OCPs (as low as 10 ng L -1 ) with the enrichment of 482-2686 times. Besides, PAN@COFs displayed good reusability and could be reused 100 times. Notably, in the real water samples (sea water and river water), the high enrichment factors and recovery rates strongly confirmed the feasibility of PAN@COFs for detecting the trace OCPs. Furthermore, due to the synergy of π-π stacking interaction and hydrophobic interaction between the OCPs molecules and PAN@COFs, the OCPs could be efficiently adsorbed on PAN@COFs, even under the extremely low driving force., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. Frequent leaks of hazardous chemicals have a huge impact on human lives, property and the ecological environment. Therefore, the three-dimensional functional porous materials with high absorption efficiency and special wettability for the disposal of hazardous chemical spills is an urgent demand. In this work, a series of spherical beads consisting of partially reduced graphene oxide (prGO) and MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) nanosheets were constructed by hydrogen bond induced self-assembly along with freeze-drying and thermal treatment. The lightweight and amphipathic prGO/MXene spherical beads (prGMSBDs) had millimeter-level size, spherical morphology and highly porous internal structure, which were especially suitable for eliminating hazardous chemicals. Because of their excellent thermal stability and fire retardance, the prGMSBDs could be used to absorb flammable organic liquids, reducing the fire risk of the flammable hazardous chemical spills. Indeed, the prGMSBDs exhibited outstanding absorption performances for various hazardous chemicals, including organic solvents and water-based concentrated acid and alkali. Moreover, the prGMSBDs showed relatively stable absorption performance after five absorption-drying cycles. Due to meeting the requirements of both amphipathic characteristic and flame retardancy, the prGMSBDs reported in this work may offer a promising strategy for rapidly cleaning up various hazardous chemicals and open a feasible route to protecting the combustible hazardous chemical spills from fire., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. Electroconductive polystyrene (PS) composites with ideal flame-retardant properties are considered as potential electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials. In this work, PS/silicon wrapped ammonium polyphosphate/multi-wall carbon nanotubes (PS/SiAPP/MWCNT) composites with segregated structure were synthesized via the methods of balling mill and hot-pressing. The obtained results revealed that the SiAPP and MWCNT were successfully introduced onto PS spheres and showed uniform distribution on the PS surface. The thermogravimetric analysis showed that PS/SiAPP/MWCNT containing 7 wt% MWCNT exhibited excellent thermal stability. Furthermore, the results of cone calorimeter test indicated that the heat release rate and total heat release of the PS/SiAPP/MWCNT containing a loading of 7 wt% MWCNT were reduced by 60.5% and 33.9%, respectively. In addition, the EMI shielding performance could reach 11 dB. Above results implied that the synergistic effect between the MWCNT and SiAPP effectively enhanced the flame retardant performance of the PS by promoting the generation of dense and continuous char layer to protect the PS from burning. The multiple reflection and adsorption are responsible for improved EMI shielding effectiveness. Flexible polyurethane foam (FPUF) has been considered as an excellent material in many fields, such as furniture and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding products due to its lightweight and flexibility. However, there is a severe fire hazard problem for FPUF that makes it unsuitable to be used in practical. Herein, a facile method was to prepare anti-dripping FPUF via electroless plating at ambient temperature. The silver nanoparticles (SNPs) were in-situ grown on the surface along with the polydopamine (PDA) as an adhesive and template (SNP@PDA@FPUF). As a result, these FPUFs show outstanding fire safety and anti-dripping capacity, and the heat release rate reduced 80.92%. Furthermore, the amounts of carbon oxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) decreased 75.01% and 22.4%, respectively. Above all, the EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) accomplished almost 120 dB as the increasing electroless time with a low density of 0.051 g/cm 3 . Furthermore, the specific EMI SE (SSE) and the absolute EMI SE (SSE/t) accomplished 2630.98 dB·cm 3 /g and 2434 dB·cm 2 /g, respectively, which was far beyond the commercial request. In this work, a novel cellulose aerogel (CNC-PVAm/rGO) was fabricated using cellulose nanocrystalline (CNC) modified with polyvinylamine (PVAm) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The resultant CNC-PVAm/rGO was then applied for the adsorption of diclofenac sodium (DCF), a typical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Characterization using ultra-high-resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area revealed that the obtained CNC-PVAm/rGO displayed an evident 3D porous structure, which had an ultralight weight, good recovery, abundant surface functional groups (e.g., -NH 2 and -OH), and rGO nanosheets. In addition, the material presented a stable crystal structure and large specific surface area (105.73 m 2  g -1 ). During the adsorption of DCF, the CNC-PVAm/rGO aerogel showed a rather excellent adsorption performance, with a maximum adsorption capacity (q max ) of 605.87 mg g -1 , which was approximately 53 times larger than that of the bare CNC aerogel (11.45 mg g -1 ). The adsorption performance of CNC-PVAm/rGO was also better than that of other reported adsorbents. The adsorption of DCF to CNC-PVAm/rGO obeyed the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, and underwent a spontaneous exothermic process. Moreover, DCF was easily desorbed from CNC-PVAm/rGO with sodium hydroxide solution (0.1 mol L -1 ), and the absorbent could be reused four times. The introduction of PVAm and rGO to the CNC-PVAm/rGO aerogel also greatly enhanced electrostatic interactions, π-π interactions, and hydrophobic effects. A porous β-cyclodextrin modified cellulose nano-fiber membrane (CA-P-CDP) was fabricated and employed to treat the trace bisphenol pollutants (bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S (BPS), and bisphenol F (BPF)) in water. The characterization highlighted the porous structure, stable crystal structure, good thermal stability of the obtained CA-P-CDP, as well as abundant functional groups, which could greatly improve the adsorption of bisphenol pollutants and recovery. During the static adsorption process, the adsorbents dosage, temperature and pH showed significant influence on the adsorption performance. At the selected conditions (25 °C, 7.0 of pH and 0.1 g L -1 of CA-P-CDP dosage), the BPA/BPS/BPF adsorption on CA-P-CDP could rapidly reached the equilibrium in 15 min by following the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the maximum adsorption capacities were 50.37, 48.52 and 47.25 mg g -1 , respectively, according to Liu isotherm model. The mechanisms between the bisphenol pollutants and CA-P-CDP mainly involved the synergism of hydrophobic effects, hydrogen-bonding interactions and π-π stacking interactions. Besides, the dynamic adsorption data showed that the volume of treated water for CA-P-CDP (0.58 L) was 14.5 times larger than that of pristine cellulose membrane (0.04 L), revealing satisfactory adsorption performance of trace BPA in water. Furthermore, during the treatment of real water samples (lake water and river water) with trace bisphenol pollutants, the complete removal of the pollutants were evidently observed, which strongly verified the possibility of CA-P-CDP for the practical application., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate whether the extended culture of day 3 (D3) embryos with low blastomere number to blastocyst following frozen-thawed embryo transfer improved the clinical outcomes., Methods: This was a retrospective study of clinical data of women undergoing in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI) cycles in the Tangdu Hospital. The patients were divided into groups with 4-5, 6, 7-9 and > 9 cells based on the blastomere number of D3 embryos. The clinical outcomes were compared., Results: In fresh transfer cycles, the implantation and clinical pregnancy rates significantly decreased, while the abortion rate significantly increased in the groups with 4-5 and 6 cells compared with those with 7-9 and > 9 cells. In frozen-thawed transfer cycles, the clinical pregnancy and implantation rates for a single blastocyst transfer cycle showed no significant differences in the groups with 4-5 and 6 cells compared with those with 7-9 and > 9 cells. However, the abortion rate was significantly higher in the group with 4-5 cells than in that with 7-9 and > 9 cells. In the double blastocyst transfer cycle, the clinical pregnancy rate showed no significant differences among the groups with 4-5, 6, and 7-9 cells., Conclusion: The implantation and clinical pregnancy rates of D3 embryos with 6 cells significantly decreased; these embryos were not considered as high-quality embryos. Extended culture of D3 embryos with ≤ 6 blastomeres to blastocysts, particularly 6-cell embryos, resulted in a similar clinical pregnancy rate as that of blastocysts derived from D3 embryos with ≥ 7 blastomeres.

In order to explore highly efficient flame-retardant rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF), phosphorus/nitrogen compounds and expandable graphite (EG) were successfully incorporated into RPUF by a free one-spot method. The combustion results showed that the fire safety of the RPUF samples was remarkably improved by the addition of phosphoric/nitrogen compounds and EG. With the incorporation of 22.4 wt.% phosphorus/nitrogen compounds and 3.2 wt.% EG, the RPUF composites achieved UL-94 V-0 rating. Besides, the total heat release and total smoke release of RPUF composites were reduced by 29.6% and 32.4% respectively, compared to those of the pure RPUF sample. PO• and PO 2 • together with nonflammable gaseous products were evolved from phosphoric/nitrogen compounds in the gas phase, which quenched the flammable free radicals in the matrix and diluted the concentration of combustible gaseous products generated from PRUF during combustion. The compact char residues which acted as excellent physical barriers were formed by catalysis of EG and phosphoric/nitrogen compounds in the condense phase. The fire hazard of RPUF was significantly reduced by the synergistic effect of phosphorus-nitrogen compounds and EG. This work provides a promising strategy to enhance the fire safety of RPUF.

The extensive utilization of rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) as construction insulation material has brought two main troubles to our society: fire risks and toxic hazards. To reduce the fire hazards of RPUF, a layered MoS 2 decorated with Cu 2 O nanoparticles was creativity obtained by hydrothermal technology and facile wet chemical treatment for reducing the toxic product formations of polyurethane nanocomposites during combustion. Due to the low weight ratio of Cu 2 O attached onto MoS 2 , the resulting Cu 2 O-MoS 2 hybrid effectively prevented the MoS 2 nanosheets from restacking. However, the Cu 2 O-MoS 2 -M hybrid was produced by increasing content of Cu 2 O, which has the characteristic stacked layer structure of MoS 2 . Reduced harmful organic volatiles and the toxic gases (e.g. a respective decrease of ca. 28% and 53% for CO and NO x products) were obtained because of synergistic effect between the physical adsorption of MoS 2 and catalysis action of Cu 2 O. Notably, the addition of Cu 2 O-MoS 2 hybrids led to high char formation of the RPUF nanocomposite, indicating the effectively catalytic carbonization property. In addition, the N-Gas model for predicting fire smoke toxicity was developed and demonstrated. A novel and submicro-scale aluminum branched oligo(phenylphosphonate) (AHPP) has been successfully synthesized and embedded into a polymeric substrate to improve the fire safety of epoxy resin (EP). The chemical structures of intermediates and target products were characterized using the nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared analysis. Morphology analysis confirmed that all of the as-synthesized AHPP submicro-particles are mutually well-separated. Combustion results demonstrated that the limiting oxygen index value is increased to 30.5% from 23.5% while the PHRR and THR are decreased by ca. 68.1% and 41.2%, respectively for the EP/AHPP-7.5 composite compared to the corresponding values for pure EP. In addition, the binary blends display the satisfying smoke toxicity suppression performance during combustion. The total smoke production and the total CO yield for EP/AHPP-7.5 are dramatically reduced by 62.0% and 32.3%, respectively, which may mainly be ascribed to the catalytic carbonization performance of the polymers and formation of Al 2 O 3 layers on the surface of the char residues. As a result, the findings in this study enabled the submicro-scale phosphorus-containing flame retardant to be a potential candidate as an efficient additive for reducing smoke toxicity of polymer composites., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Epoxy resin (EP) has widespread applications in thermosetting materials with great versatility and desirable properties such as high electrical resistivity and satisfactory mechanical properties. At present, 9,10-Dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) is widely applied to EP matrix for high flame resistance. Nevertheless, EP/DOPO composites acquire highly toxic decomposition products and smoke particles produced during combustion due to the gaseous fire-inhibition mechanism, which will be a major problem. To address this concern, an effective hyper-branched aluminum phosphonate (AHPP) was rationally designed and then coupled with DOPO into EP matrix to fabricate the fire-safe epoxy resin composites. On the basis of the results, significant increment in limiting oxygen index value (an achievement of 32% from 23.5% for pristine EP) and reduction in peak heat release rate and total heat release (59.4% and 45.6%) with the DOPO/AHPP ratio of 2:1 were recorded. During the cone calorimeter test, both the smoke production and total CO yield of EP-4 composite with the DOPO/AHPP ratio of 1:2 were dramatically decreased by 42.7% and 53.6%, which was mainly associated with the excellent catalytic carbonization of AHPP submicro-particles for EP composite. Future applications of submicro-scaled flame-retardant with various phosphorus oxidation states will have good prospects for development.

Purpose: Studies on rodents have shown that assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) are associated with perturbation of genomic imprinting in blastocyst-stage embryos. However, the vulnerable developmental window for ART influence on the genomic imprinting of embryos is still undetermined. The purpose of this study was to establish the specific embryonic development stage at which the loss of methylation of H19 imprinting control regions (ICRs) was caused by ART occurrence. Additionally, we explored protocols to safeguard against possible negative impacts of ART on embryo H19 imprinting., Methods: Mouse embryos were generated under four different experimental conditions, divided into four groups: control, in vitro culture (IVC), in vitro fertilization (IVF), and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). The methylation levels of H19 ICR of the grouped or individual embryos were analyzed by bisulfite-sequencing PCR., Results: Our data showed that the loss of methylation of H19 ICR in mouse blastocysts was inflicted to a similar extent by IVC, IVF, and ICSI. Specifically, we observed a significant loss of methylation of H19 ICR between the mouse 8-cell and morula stages. In addition, we revealed that the transfer of mouse embryos generated by ARTs in the uterus at the 8-cell stage induced the occurrence of methylation patterns in the blastocysts closer to the in vivo ones., Conclusions: Our findings indicate that the loss of methylation of H19 ICR caused by ARTs occurs between the 8-cell and the morula stages, and the transfer of cleavage embryos to the uterus mitigates the loss methylation of H19 derived by mice ARTs.

The extemporaneous combustion of coal remains a major threat to safety in coal mines because such fire accidents result in casualties and significant property loss, as well as serious environmental pollution. This work proposed the fabrication of flame-retardant rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) containing expandable graphite as char expander/sealant with melamine phosphosphate and 2-carboxyethyl (phenyl)phosphinic acid as char inducer and radical trapping agents. The as-prepared RPUF successfully inhibited coal combustion by forming thermally stable high graphitic content expandable intumescent char sealing over the coal. The RPUF achieved UL-94 V-0 rating in addition to significant reductions in peak heat release, total heat release, and CO and CO 2 yields. The external and the internal residual char structure was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectra, Raman spectroscopy, and real-time Fourier transform infrared spectra techniques, and a flame-retardant mode of action has been proposed. This work provides important insight into a facile fabrication of highly efficient and economical flame-retardant RPUF to inhibit the spontaneous combustion of coal.

Constructing novel graphic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 )-based nanohybrids via a facile method for high-performance polymeric materials which exhibit enhanced fire safety properties are highly desirable. Here, the g-C 3 N 4 /carbon sphere/Cu (denoted as CSACS-C) nanohybrid was prepared by metal ions-induced gel reaction using sodium alginate as a green template, and thereafter introduced into thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) matrix to prepare nanocomposites. Microstructure analyses indicated the successful synthesis of the ternary nanohybrid, where both the g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets and Cu nanoparticles were well-dispersed in the carbon material. Moreover, the ternary nanohybrid showed good distribution in TPU matrices, and exhibited strong interfacial adhesion with the polymeric host. It is worth noting that addition of these nanohybrids led to significantly improved fire safety. Particularly, remarkably reduced pyrolysis gaseous products generation and peak of heat release rate were achieved for TPU/CSACS-C system. This enhanced fire safety was due to the interpretations that the SACS and g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets retarded the heat and mass propagation, while the incorporation of Cu nanoparticles induced earlier thermal decomposition into more char residues and less pyrolysis gaseous products. Manganese dioxide (MnO₂), as a promising green material, has recently attracted considerable attention of researchers from various fields. In this work, a facile method was introduced to prepare binary hybrids by fabricating three-dimensional (3D) zinc hydroxystannate (ZHS) cubes on two-dimensional (2D) MnO₂ nanosheets towards excellent flame retardancy and toxic effluent elimination of epoxy (EP) resin. Microstructural analysis confirmed that the morphologies and structures of MnO₂@ZHS binary hybrids were well characterized, implying the successful synthesis. Additionally, the morphological characterization indicated that MnO₂@ZHS binary hybrids could achieve satisfactory interfacial interaction with the EP matrix and be well dispersed in nanocomposites. Cone calorimeter test suggested that MnO₂@ZHS binary hybrids effectively suppressed the peak of heat release rate and total heat release of EP nanocomposites, performing better than MnO₂ or ZHS alone. Condensed-phase analysis revealed that MnO₂@ZHS binary hybrids could promote the char density and graphitization degree of char residues and thereby successfully retard the permeation of oxygen and flammable gases. Moreover, through the analysis of gas phase, it can be concluded that MnO₂@ZHS binary hybrids could efficiently suppress the production of toxic gases during the degradation of EP nanocomposites. This work implies that the construction of 2D/3D binary hybrids with an interfacial interaction is an effective way to fabricate high-performance flame retardants for EP.

A facile approach was developed to simultaneously functionalize and reduce graphene oxide (GO) with 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO)-phosphonamidate. To achieve stable dispersion and effective stress transfer, graphene was functionalized by polyethyleneimine (PEI). To improve the fire resistance of bare graphene, DOPO was grafted on the surface of PEI-reduced graphene oxide (PEI-rGO) to obtain the grafting of DOPO-phosphonamidate on the graphene. A morphological study indicated that, due to the good interfacial interaction between the functionalized graphene and epoxy (EP), functionalized reduced graphene oxide (f-rGO) was well-dispersed in the host polymer. Incorporation of 3.0 wt% f-rGO led to the increased char yields of the EP. Moreover, the storage modulus and glass transition temperature were improved, respectively. The evaluation of combustion behavior demonstrated that the peak heat release rate and total heat release of f-rGO/EP were reduced by 31% and 34.3%, respectively, compared to those of neat EP. This dramatically reduced fire hazards were mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of f-RGO. On one hand, DOPO-phosphonamidate on the surface of GO promoted flame inhibition in the gas phase while protecting the rGO against fire. A series of aluminum hypophosphite (AHPi)/graphite-like carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) (designated as CAHPi) hybrids were prepared, followed by incorporation into thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). The introduction of CAHPi hybrids into TPU led to a marked reduction in the peak of the heat release rate (pHRR), total heat release, weight loss rate, smoke production rate and total smoke production (TSP). For instance, pHRR and TSP decreased by 40% and 50% for TPU/CAHPi20. Furthermore, the increasing fire growth index and decreasing fire performance index were obtained for TPU/CAHPi systems, suggesting reduced fire hazards. It was found that improved fire safety of TPU nanocomposites was contributed by condensed phase and gas phase mechanisms. On one hand, g-C₃N₄ accelerated the thermal decomposition of AHPi for the formation of more char layers. On the other hand, g-C₃N₄ induced AHPi to generate more free radical capture agents when exposed to flame, besides protecting AHPi against thermal oxidation., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

A novel ternary nanostructure polyphosphazene nanotube (PZS)@ mesoporous silica (M-SiO 2 )@bimetallic phosphide (CoCuP) was facilely fabricated, using PZS as the template, where large amount of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide molecules were anchored to PZS via a similar layer-by-layer assembly strategy, and then uniform M-SiO 2 shells can be formed successfully by Hyeon's coating method. Subsequently, the three-dimensional (3D) nanostructure on the basis of bimetallic phosphide (CoCuP) interconnected with PZS@M-SiO 2 was synthesized via a convenient, mild hydrothermal route. It is noted that incorporating well-designed PZS@M-SiO 2 @CoCuP led to significant decrease on fire hazard of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), that is, 58.2% and 19.4% reductions in peak heat release rate and total heat release, respectively, as well as lower toxic hydrogen cyanide and carbon monoxide yield accompanied by higher graphitized char layer. In the case of TPU/PZS@M-SiO 2 @CoCuP system, the storage modulus at -97 °C was dramatically improved by 62.6%, and glass transition temperature was shifted to higher value, compared to those of pure TPU. The enhanced fire safety and mechanical property for TPU composites can be ascribed to tripartite cooperative effect from respective parts (CoCuP and M-SiO 2 ) plus the PZS.

Graphitic carbon nitride/organic aluminum hypophosphites (g-C 3 N 4 /OAHPi) hybrids, i.e., CPDCPAHPi and CBPODAHPi, were synthesized by esterification and salification reactions, and then incorporated into polystyrene (PS) to prepare composites through a melt blending method. Structure and morphology characterizations demonstrated the successful synthesis of PDCPAHPi, BPODAHPi and their hybrids. The g-C 3 N 4 protected OAHPi from external heat and thus improved the thermal stability of OAHPi. Combining g-C 3 N 4 with OAHPi contributed to reduction in peak of heat release rate, total heat release and smoke production rate of PS matrix. Reduced smoke released has also been demonstrated by smoke density chamber testing. Additionally, introduction of the hybrids led to decreased release of flammable aromatic compounds. These properties improvement could be attributed to gas phase action and physical barrier effect in condensed phase: phosphorus-containing low-energy radicals generated from OAHPi effectively captured high-energy free-radicals evolved from PS; g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets retarded the permeation of heat and the escape of volatile degradation products. A uniform zinc hydroxystannate (ZnHS) microcube was synthesized to reduce toxicity and fire hazards of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composites using ammonium polyphosphate as a flame retardant agent. The structure, morphology and thermal properties of ZnHS were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis, respectively. Smoke suppression properties and synergistic flame retardant effect of ZnHS on flame retardant TPU composites were intensively investigated by smoke density test, cone calorimeter test, and thermalgravimetric analysis. Thermogravimetric analysis/infrared spectrometry and tube furnace were employed to evaluate the toxic gases (CO, NOx and HCN) of TPU composites. The incorporation of ZnHS into TPU matrix effectively improved the fire safety and restrained the smoke density, which is attributed to that the char residue catalyzed by ZnHS enhanced barrier effect that reduced peak heat release rate, total heat release, smoke particles and organic volatiles during combustion. Furthermore, the ZnHS synergist demonstrated high efficiency in catalytic degradation of the toxic gases, which obviously decreased total volatiled product and toxic volatiles evolved, such as the CO, HCN and NOx, indicating suppressed toxicity of the TPU composites., (Copyright © 2016. Somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) is an assisted reproductive technique that can produce multiple copies of excellent livestock. However, low cloning efficiency limits the application of SCNT. In this study, we systematically investigated the major influencing factors related to the overall cloning efficiency in pigs. Here, 13620 cloned embryos derived from excellent pigs were transferred into 79 surrogate gilts, and 119 live cloned piglets were eventually generated. During cloning, group of cloned embryos derived from excellent Landrace or Large white pigs presented no significant differences of cleavage and blastocyst rates, blastocyst cell numbers, surrogate pregnancy and delivery rates, average numbers of piglets born and alive and cloning efficiencies, and group of 101-150, 151-200 or 201-250 cloned embryos transferred per surrogate also displayed a similar developmental efficiency. When estrus stage of surrogate gilts was compared, group of embryo transfer on Day 2 of estrus showed significantly higher pregnancy rate, delivery rate, average number of piglets born, average alive piglet number or cloning efficiency than group on Day 1, Day 3, Day 4 or Day 5, respectively (P<0.05). And, in comparison with the preovulation and postovulation groups, group of surrogate gilts during periovulation displayed a significantly higher overall cloning efficiency (P<0.05). Further investigation of surrogate estrus stage and ovulation status displayed that ovulation status was the real factor underlying estrus stage to determine the overall cloning efficiency. And more, follicle puncture for preovulation, not transfer position shallowed for preovulation or deepened for postovulation, significantly improved the average number of piglets alive and cloning efficiency (P<0.05). In conclusion, our results demonstrated that ovulation status of surrogate gilts was the fundamental factor determining the overall cloning efficiency of excellent pigs, and follicle puncture, not transfer position change, improved cloning efficiency. This work would have important implications in preserving and breeding excellent livestock and improving the overall cloning efficiency.

Novel spinel copper cobaltate (CuCo2O4)/graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) (named C-CuCo2O4) nanohybrids with different weight ratios of g-C3N4 to CuCo2O4 were successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method. Then the nanohybrids were added into the thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) matrix to prepare TPU nanocomposites using a master batch-melt compounding approach. Morphological analysis indicated that CuCo2O4 nanoparticles were uniformly distributed on g-C3N4 nanosheets. Thermal analysis revealed that C-CuCo2O4-7 (proportion of g-C3N4 to CuCo2O4 of 93/7) was an optimal nanohybrid for the properties improvement of TPU. Incorporation of C-CuCo2O4-7 into TPU led to significant improvements in the onset decomposition temperature, temperature at maximal mass loss rate and char yields. The heat release rate and total heat release of TPU/C-CuCo2O4-7 decreased by 37% and 31.3%, respectively, compared with those of pure TPU. Furthermore, the amounts of pyrolysis gaseous products, including combustible volatiles and carbon monoxide (CO), were remarkably reduced, whereas, non-flammable gas (carbon dioxide) increased. Excellent dispersion of C-CuCo2O4-7 in TPU host was achieved, due to the synergistic effect between g-C3N4 and CuCo2O4. Enhancements in the thermal stability and flame retardancy were attributed to the explanations that g-C3N4 nanosheets showed the physical barrier effect and catalytic nitrogen monoxide (NO) decomposition, and that CuCo2O4 catalyzes the reaction of CO with NO and increased char residues., (Copyright © 2015. In the present study, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) wrapped with MoS2 nanolayers (MoS2-CNTs) were facilely synthesized to obtain advanced hybrids. The structure of the MoS2-CNT hybrids was characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy measurements. Subsequently, the MoS2-CNT hybrids were incorporated into EP for reducing fire hazards. Compared with pristine CNTs, MoS2-CNT hybrids showed good dispersion in EP matrix and no obvious aggregation of CNTs was observed. The obtained nanocomposites exhibited significant improvements in thermal properties, flame retardancy and mechanical properties, compared with those of neat EP and composites with a single CNT or MoS2. With the incorporation of 2.0 wt % of MoS2-CNT hybrids, the char residues and glass transition temperature (Tg) of the EP composite was significantly increased. Also, the addition of MoS2-CNT hybrids awarded excellent fire resistance to the EP matrix, which was evidenced by the significantly reduced peak heat release rate and total heat release. Moreover, the amount of organic volatiles from EP decomposition was obviously decreased, and the formation of toxic CO was effectively suppressed, implying the toxicity of the volatiles was reduced and smoke production was obviously suppressed. The dramatically reduced fire hazards were generally ascribed to the synergistic effect of MoS2 and CNTs, containing good dispersion of MoS2-CNT hybrids, catalytic char function of MoS2 nanolayers, and physical barrier effects of MoS2 nanolayers and CNT network structure.

Sperm morphology is the best predictor of fertilization potential, and the critical predictive information for supporting assisted reproductive methods selection. Given its important predictive value and the declining reality of semen quality in recent years, the threshold of normal sperm morphology rate (NSMR) is being constantly corrected and controversial, from the 4th edition (14%) to the 5th version (4%). We retrospectively analyzed 4756 cases of infertility patients treated with conventional-IVF(c-IVF) or ICSI, which were divided into three groups according to NSMR: ≥14%, 4%-14% and <4%. Here, we demonstrate that, with decrease in NSMR(≥14%, 4%-14%, <4%), in the c-IVF group, the rate of fertilization, normal fertilization, high-quality embryo, multi-pregnancy and birth weight of twins gradually decreased significantly (P<0.05), while the miscarriage rate was significantly increased (p<0.01) and implantation rate, clinical pregnancy rate, ectopic pregnancy rate, preterm birth rate, live birth rate, sex ratio, and birth weight(Singleton) showed no significant change. In the ICSI group, with decrease in NSMR (≥14%, 4%-14%, <4%), high-quality embryo rate, multi-pregnancy rate and birth weight of twins were gradually decreased significantly (p<0.05), while other parameters had no significant difference. Considering the clinical assisted methods selection, in the NFMR ≥14% group, normal fertilization rate of c-IVF was significantly higher than the ICSI group (P<0.05), in the 4%-14% group, birth weight (twins) of c-IVF were significantly higher than the ICSI group, in the <4% group, miscarriage of IVF was significantly higher than the ICSI group. Therefore, we conclude that NSMR is positively related to embryo reproductive potential, and when NSMR<4% (5th edition), ICSI should be considered first, while the NSMR≥4%, c-IVF assisted reproduction might be preferred.

A series of sodium alginate (SA) nanocomposite films with different loading levels of graphitic-like carbon nitride (g-C3N4) were fabricated via the casting technique. The structure and morphology of nanocomposite films were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Thermogravimetric analysis results suggested that thermal stability of all the nanocomposite films was enhanced significantly, including initial thermal degradation temperature increased by 29.1 °C and half thermal degradation temperature improved by 118.2 °C. Mechanical properties characterized by tensile testing and dynamic mechanical analysis measurements were also reinforced remarkably. With addition of 6.0 wt % g-C3N4, the tensile strength of SA nanocomposite films was dramatically enhanced by 103%, while the Young's modulus remarkably increased from 60 to 3540 MPa. Moreover, the storage modulus significantly improved by 34.5% was observed at loadings as low as 2.0 wt %. These enhancements were further investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry and real time Fourier transform infrared spectra. A new perspective of balance was proposed to explain the improvement of those properties for the first time. At lower than 1.0 wt % loading, most of the g-C3N4 nanosheets were discrete in the SA matrix, resulting in improved thermal stability and mechanical properties; above 1.0 wt % and below 6.0 wt % content, the aggregation was present in SA host coupled with insufficient hydrogen bondings limiting the barrier for heat and leading to the earlier degradation and poor dispersion; at 6.0 wt % addition, the favorable balance was established with enhanced thermal and mechanical performances. However, the balance point of 2.0 wt % from dynamic mechanical analysis was due to combination of temperature and agglomeration. The work may contribute to a potential research approach for other nanocomposites.

The aim of this study was to optimize electrofusion conditions for generating porcine tetraploid (4n) embryos and produce tetraploid/diploid (4n/2n) chimeric embryos. Different electric field intensities were tested and 2 direct current (DC) pulses of 0.9 kV/cm for 30 μs was selected as the optimum condition for electrofusion of 2-cell embryos to produce 4n embryos. The fusion rate of 2-cell embryos and the development rate to blastocyst of presumably 4n embryos, reached 85.4% and 28.5%, respectively. 68.18% of the fused embryos were found to be 4n as demonstrated by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). Although the number of blastomeres in 4n blastocysts was significantly lower than in 2n blastocysts (P<0.05), there was no significant difference in developmental rates of blastocysts between 2n and 4n embryos (P>0.05), suggesting that the blastocyst forming capacity in 4n embryos is similar to those in 2n embryos. Moreover, 4n/2n chimeric embryos were obtained by aggregation of 4n and 2n embryos. We found that the developmental rate and cell number of blastocysts of 4-cell (4n)/4-cell (2n) chimeric embryos were significantly higher than those of 2-cell (4n)/4-cell (2n), 4-cell (4n)/8-cell (2n), 4-cell (4n)/2-cell (2n) chimeric embryos (P<0.05). Consistent with mouse chimeras, the majority of 4n cells contribute to the trophectoderm (TE), while the 2n cells are mainly present in the inner cell mass (ICM) of porcine 4n/2n chimeric embryos. Ammonium polyphosphate (APP), a widely used intumescent flame retardant, has been microencapsulated by cellulose acetate butyrate with the aim of enhancing the water resistance of APP and the compatibility between the ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) matrix and APP. The structure of microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate (MCAPP) was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and water contact angle (WCA). The flame retadancy and thermal stability were investigated by a limiting oxygen index (LOI) test, UL-94 test, cone calorimeter, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The WCA results indicated that MCAPP has excellent water resistance and hydrophobicity. The results demonstrated that MCAPP enhanced interfacial adhesion, mechanical, electrical, and thermal stability of the EVA/MCAPP/polyamide-6 (PA-6) system. The microencapsulation not only imparted EVA/MCAPP/PA-6 with a higher LOI value and UL-94 rating but also could significantly improve the fire safety. Furthermore, the microencapsulated EVA/MCAPP/PA-6 composites can still pass the UL-94 V-0 rating after treatment with water for 3 days at 70 °C, indicating excellent water resistance. This investigation provides a promising formulation for the intumescent flame retardant EVA with excellent properties.

The low success rate of somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) in mammalian cloning is largely due to imprinting problems. However, little is known about the mechanisms of reprogramming imprinted genes during SCNT. Parental origin-specific DNA methylation regulates the monoallelic expression of imprinted genes. In natural fertilization, methylation imprints are established in the parental germline and maintained throughout embryonic development. However, it is unclear whether methylation imprints are protected from global changes of DNA methylation in cloned preimplantation embryos. Here, we demonstrate that cloned porcine preimplantation embryos exhibit demethylation at differentially methylated regions (DMRs) of imprinted genes; in particular, demethylation occurs during the first two cell cycles. By RNAi-mediated knockdown, we found that Dnmt1 is required for the maintenance of methylation imprints in porcine preimplantation embryos. However, no clear signals were detected in the nuclei of oocytes and preimplantation embryos by immunofluorescence. Thus, Dnmt1 is present at very low levels in the nuclei of porcine oocytes and preimplantation embryos and maintains methylation imprints. We further showed that methylation imprints were rescued in nonenucleated metaphase II (MII) oocytes. Our results indicate that loss of Dnmt1 in the maternal nucleus during SCNT significantly contributes to the unfaithful maintenance of methylation imprints in cloned embryos.
