Cardiomyocyte injury is closely related to various myocardial diseases, and S-Allyl-L-cysteine (SAC) has been found to have myocardial protective effects, but its mechanism is currently unclear. Meanwhile, copper also has various physiological functions, and this study found that copper inhibited cell viability in a concentration and time-dependent manner, and was associated with multiple modes of death. Elesclomol plus CuCl 2 (ES + Cu) significantly inhibited cell viability, and this effect could only be blocked by copper chelator TTM, indicating that "ES + Cu" induced cuproptosis in cardiomyocytes. SAC reduced the inhibitory effects of high concentration copper and "ES + Cu" on cell viability in a concentration and time-dependent manner, indicating that SAC plays a cardioprotective role under stress. Further mechanism study showed that high concentration of copper significantly induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis and increased the levels of LDH, MDA and ROS, while SAC inhibited the apoptosis and injury of cardiomyocytes induced by copper. "ES + Cu" significantly increased intracellular copper levels and decreased the expression of FDX1, LIAS, Lip-DLST and Lip-DLAT; FDX1 siRNA did not affect the expression of LIAS, but further reduced the expression of Lip-DLST and Lip-DLAT; SAC did not affect the expression of these genes, but enhanced the effect of "ES + Cu" in down-regulating these gene expression and restored intracellular copper levels. In addition, "ES + Cu" reduced ATP production, weakened the activity of mitochondrial complex I and III, inhibited cell viability, and increased the contents of injury markers LDH, MDA, CK-MB and cTnI, while SAC significantly improved mitochondrial function injury and cardiomyocyte injury induced by "ES + Cu". In Shijiazhuang City, ozone （O 3 ） pollution occurs frequently in June every year. In June 2023, the average O 3 8 h concentration （O 3 -8h） pollution exceeded 80% of the days in the month, and O 3 was the primary pollutant, accounting for 100%. For an O 3 heavy pollution process from June 11 to 18, the air quality model WRF-CMAQ was used for simulation, and the average error data MFB and MFE were -10.47% and 17.96%, respectively, which was within the ideal error range. The CMAQ process analysis module was used to simulate the physical and chemical processes in Shijiazhuang City, and the dry deposition （DDEP） contribution concentration was -23.88 μg·m -3 , which was the main process of O 3 consumption, whereas the transport process （TRAN） was the main source of O 3 , among which the contribution was more significant in vertical transport （VTRA）. At the same time, the source analysis module （ISAM） was used to analyze the O 3 contribution of local and surrounding areas in Shijiazhuang City. The results showed that the contribution rate of local industry sources in Shijiazhuang City was as follows： traffic source （12.54%） > industrial source （6.94%） > residential source （6.56%） > power source （4.75%）. The long-distance transmission source （BCON） continued to be in the first place with a high contribution rate of 63.31%. In the heavy pollution period under stable weather, the contribution concentration of BCON in the D02 layer of the nested domain to Shijiazhuang City was lower than the sum of the marked area. Among the surrounding cities, Baoding City had the highest contribution rate under stable weather, accounting for 26.21%. In the late period, the contribution concentration of Xingtai City increased rapidly under the action of high-value southwest wind. To effectively reduce O 3 pollution, it is necessary to reduce emissions in the city and to control the upwind cities in advance, and the implementation of inter-regional joint prevention and control is the key.

Objectives: An increasing number of studies have shown that third (CB3)- and fourth-generation cryoballoons (CB4) have been used to treat various types of atrial fibrillation (AF), but previous research regarding the safety and efficacy of CB3 or CB4 ablation remains controversial. Therefore, a meta-analysis was performed to further evaluate the safety and efficacy of pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) using the CB3 and CB4 in the treatment of AF., Methods: We searched PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, China Science and Technology Journal Database, and Clinicaltrials.gov up to December 2023 for qualified trials and data extraction according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. All analyses were carried out using Review Manager 5.3 software., Results: The meta-analysis included 13 observational studies consisting of 3,281 subjects and did not include a randomized controlled trial. Overall analyses indicated that the CB3 significantly reduced total procedure time [weighted mean difference (WMD) = -8.69 min, 95% confidence interval (CI) = -15.45 to -1.94 min, I 2  = 93%], increased the PVI recording [relative risk (RR) = 1.24, 95% CI = 1.03-1.49, I 2  = 90%], and increased the mean nadir temperature of overall PVs (WMD = 2.80°C, 95% CI = 1.08-4.51°C, I 2  = 89%) compared with the CB2. Moreover, the CB4 significantly reduced the total procedure time (WMD = -14.50 min, 95% CI = -20.89 to -8.11 min, I 2  = 95%), reduced the fluoroscopy time (WMD = -2.37 min, 95% CI = -4.28 to -0.46 min, I 2  = 95%), increased the PVI recording (RR = 1.40, 95% CI = 1.15-1.71, I 2  = 90%) compared with the CB2. Consumption of dietary fiber and anthocyanin has been linked to a lower incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC). This study scrutinizes the potential antitumorigenic attributes of a black rice diet (BRD), abundantly rich in dietary fiber and anthocyanin. Our results demonstrate notable antitumorigenic effects in mice on BRD, indicated by a reduction in both the size and number of intestinal tumors and a consequent extension in life span, compared to control diet-fed counterparts. Furthermore, fecal transplants from BRD-fed mice to germ-free mice led to a decrease in colonic cell proliferation, coupled with maintained integrity of the intestinal barrier. The BRD was associated with significant shifts in gut microbiota composition, specifically an augmentation in probiotic strains Bacteroides uniformis and Lactobacillus . Noteworthy changes in gut metabolites were also documented, including the upregulation of indole-3-lactic acid and indole. These metabolites have been identified to stimulate the intestinal aryl hydrocarbon receptor pathway, inhibiting CRC cell proliferation and colorectal tumorigenesis. In summary, these findings propose that a BRD may modulate the progression of intestinal tumors by fostering protective gut microbiota and metabolite profiles. Men demonstrate higher incidence and mortality rates of colorectal cancer (CRC) than women. This study aims to explain the potential causes of such sexual dimorphism in CRC from the perspective of sex-biased gut microbiota and metabolites. The results show that sexual dimorphism in colorectal tumorigenesis is observed in both Apc Min/ + mice and azoxymethane (AOM)/dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-treated mice with male mice have significantly larger and more tumors, accompanied by more impaired gut barrier function. Moreover, pseudo-germ mice receiving fecal samples from male mice or patients show more severe intestinal barrier damage and higher level of inflammation. A significant change in gut microbiota composition is found with increased pathogenic bacteria Akkermansia muciniphila and deplets probiotic Parabacteroides goldsteinii in both male mice and pseudo-germ mice receiving fecal sample from male mice. Sex-biased gut metabolites in pseudo-germ mice receiving fecal sample from CRC patients or CRC mice contribute to sex dimorphism in CRC tumorigenesis through glycerophospholipids metabolism pathway. Sexual dimorphism in tumorigenesis of CRC mouse models. In conclusion, the sex-biased gut microbiome and metabolites contribute to sexual dimorphism in CRC. Rationale: Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) is an opportunistic fungal infection that occurs in people with impaired or suppressed immunity such as patients with human immunodeficiency virus or organ transplant. However, the incidence and characteristics of PCP in the population with long-term hemodialysis is poorly described in the literature., Patient Concerns: We present a case of a 50-year-old female patient being transferred to our hospital in February 2022 with a 20-day history of cough and tight breath. She received amoxicillin and cephalosporin anti-infection treatment successively in local hospital but no significant improvement in symptoms. She had a 2-year history of hemodialysis and no relevant transplantation and human immunodeficiency virus infection. She was diagnosed as ANCA associated vasculitis (AAV) and given oral prednisone acetate (20 mg/day) and methotrexate (2.5 mg/week) half a year ago., Diagnoses: Based on the patient's medical history, Lung computerized tomography image, the Next generation sequencing report, the patient was diagnosed with renal failure, anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody associated vasculitis, and Pneumocystis pneumonia., Interventions: The dosage of immunosuppressant was reduced due to leucocyte dripping and fever, and antibiotic and antifungal treatment were also given. The patient's lung condition was getting worse and noninvasive ventilator was required to maintain blood oxygen. Blood filtration is used to remove toxins. Ganciclovir and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole was used based on the next generation sequencing report., Outcomes: The patient died of respiratory failure., Lessons: The risk of PCP in hemodialysis patients may be higher than that in ordinary population, and the prognosis of patients with immunosuppression may be worse. Dynamic assessment of vasculitis activity is necessary for hemodialysis patients with AAV because infections may obscure lung symptoms of AAV. It is not recommended that hemodialysis patients with long-term immunosuppression should reduce or stop the dosage of immunosuppressive drugs during the treatment because it may aggravate the condition of PCP. Objective: We investigated the effects of COVID-19 fear on negative moods among college students, and assessed the efficacy of physical exercise behavior as a moderator variable., Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. Students from three colleges and universities in Shangqiu City, Henan Province and Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province were enrolled in this study, which was performed during the COVID-19 pandemic using an online questionnaire. A total of 3,133 college students completed the questionnaire. Measurement tools included the COVID-19 Phobia Scale (C19P-S), Depression-Anxiety-Stress Self-Rating Scale (DASS), and the Physical Activity Behavior Scale (PARS-3)., Results: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the rates of depression, anxiety, and stressful negative moods among college students were 35.5, 65.5, and 10.95%, respectively; there was a positive correlation between COVID-19 fear and negative moods among college students ( r = 0.479, p < 0.001), which was negatively correlated with physical exercise behavior ( r = -0.4, p < 0.001); the regulating effects of physical exercise behavior were significant (ΔR2 = 0.04, p < 0.001)., Conclusion: The rate of negative moods among college students is high, and the fear for COVID-19 is one of the key factors that lead to negative moods. Physical exercise can modulate the impact of COVID-19 fear among college students on negative moods. Objective: To explore the effect of problematic mobile phone use on college students' physical activity and their relationships., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 3980 college students from three universities in Jiangsu province by random cluster sampling. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short (IPAQ-SF) measured college students' physical activity. The Mobile Phone Addiction Tendency Scale for College Students (MPATS) measured problematic mobile phone use tendencies. College students' physical activity was measured by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short (IPAQ-SF), and the Mobile Phone Addiction Tendency Scale measured their mobile phone addiction tendency for College Students (MPATS)., Results: (1) The proportions of the low-, medium-, and high-intensity physical activity were 83.5%, 10.7%, and 5.8%, respectively, with gender differences; The score of problematic mobile phone use tendency was 38.725 ± 15.139. (2) There were significant differences in problematic mobile phone use tendency among college students with different physical activity intensity (F = 11.839, p < 0.001, η 2 = 0.007). (3) The level of physical activity was significantly correlated with the tendency of problematic mobile phone use ( r = -0.173, p < 0.001). (4) Physical activity of college students could significantly predict the tendency of problematic mobile phone use (F (3,3605) = 11.296, p < 0.001)., Conclusions: The physical activity of college students was mainly moderate to low intensity, while the tendency of problematic mobile phone use was high. College students' physical activity level was one of the important constraints of problematic mobile phone use tendency.

AutoML aims at best configuring learning systems automatically. It contains core subtasks of algorithm selection and hyper-parameter tuning. Previous approaches considered searching in the joint hyper-parameter space of all algorithms, which forms a huge but redundant space and causes an inefficient search. We tackle this issue in a cascaded algorithm selection way, which contains an upper-level process of algorithm selection and a lower-level process of hyper-parameter tuning for algorithms. While the lower-level process employs an anytime tuning approach, the upper-level process is naturally formulated as a multi-armed bandit, deciding which algorithm should be allocated one more piece of time for the lower-level tuning. To achieve the goal of finding the best configuration, we propose the Extreme-Region Upper Confidence Bound (ER-UCB) strategy. Unlike UCB bandits that maximize the mean of feedback distribution, ER-UCB maximizes the extreme-region of feedback distribution. We first consider stationary distributions and propose the ER-UCB-S algorithm that has O(Klnn) regret upper bound with K arms and n trials. We then extend to non-stationary settings and propose the ER-UCB-N algorithm that has O(Kn ν ) regret upper bound, where [Formula: see text]. Finally, empirical studies on synthetic and AutoML tasks verify the effectiveness of ER-UCB-S/N by their outperformance in corresponding settings.

Objective: Negative moods in college students have caused frequent extreme behaviors. This study analyzed the current status and correlation between physical activity and negative moods in college students., Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used in the present research. Data on college students' physical activity and negative moods were collected using the Sports Questionnaire Star software. The questionnaires were administered to college students in five colleges and universities in Henan and Jiangsu Provinces, China, and a total of 3711 correctly completed questionnaires were returned. Data on sociological and demographic information, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form (IPAQ-SF), and the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS) were collected. The research was conducted in December 2021., Results: The low-intensity physical activity rate among college students was 55.56%, while depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms were detected in 35.14%, 65.29%, and 10.99%of the college students, respectively. Depression (K = 35.58, p < 0.001) and anxiety (K = 15.56, p < 0.001) rates were significantly different among the different physical activity intensity groups. The proportion of students who perform high-intensity physical activities was lower than those who perform low- and moderate-intensity physical activities., Conclusion: Low physical activity and high anxiety are evident among college students, and prolonged moderate-to-low-intensity physical activity (including static behavior) induces depression and anxiety. In the future, further studies can be conducted on improving the physical activity intensity of college students, improving the mental health monitoring and intervention systems of college students, and exploring the dose-effect relationship between physical activity and negative moods.

Background: In the period of the COVID-19 pandemic, the level of college students' physical exercise, the detection rate of negative emotions, and their correlation should attract extensive attention. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the correlation between college students' physical exercise and negative emotions., Methods: Data were collected via a web-based cross-sectional survey. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 3118 college students from five universities in Shanghai in March 2022. In addition to sociodemographic information, measures included Physical Activity Rating Scale (PARS-3) and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS). The chi-squared test and logistic regression were used to analyze the differences and test the relative risk of negative emotions caused by different amounts of physical exercise., Results: Most students (66.1%) performed a small amount of physical exercise. Male students' physical-exercise level was higher than female students', and the detection rate of negative emotions was lower than that of female students. Moderate and low physical-exercise levels were associated with a higher risk of depression (beta of 0.289 and 0.345, respectively) and anxiety (beta of 0.301 and 0.418) symptoms than high physical-exercise level., Conclusions: The anxiety symptoms of college students were significant during the COVID-19 pandemic period. The physical-exercise behavior of college students was closely related to negative emotions, and the weakening of physical-exercise behavior was one of the factors that induced negative emotions in college students.

Background: Self-efficacy is an important component of the mental well-being of college students. This study aimed to evaluate the development and the correlation between physical fitness (PF), exercise behavior, and self-efficacy in college students. To examine whether PF in individual college students can predict self-efficacy, and whether exercise behavior mediates this relationship., Methods: This was an observational study of 1923 randomly selected college students (50.5% girl). Measures included the Physical Activity Rating Scale, the Self-Efficacy Scale, and PF testing., Results: Self-efficacy was weakly correlated to both PF ( r = 0.240) and exercise behavior ( r = 0.248). In regression analysis, PF explained 24.7% of the variance in self-efficacy, increasing to 29.4% when exercise behavior was considered. Therefore, the predictive effect of PF on self-efficacy is partially realized through healthy exercise behavior., Conclusion: Physical fitness can predict self-efficacy among college students, with exercise behavior being an important mediation of this relationship. Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is a chronic neurological disorder that is often resistant to antiepileptic drugs. The pathogenesis of TLE is extremely complicated and remains elusive. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying TLE is crucial for its diagnosis and treatment. In the present study, a lithium-pilocarpine-induced TLE model was employed to reveal the pathological changes of hippocampus in rats. Hippocampal samples were taken for proteomic analysis at 2 weeks after the onset of spontaneous seizure (a chronic stage of epileptogenesis). Isobaric tag for relative and absolute quantization (iTRAQ) coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) technique was applied for proteomic analysis of hippocampus. A total of 4173 proteins were identified from the hippocampi of epileptic rats and its control, of which 27 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were obtained with a fold change > 1.5 and P < 0.05. Bioinformatics analysis indicated 27 DEPs were mainly enriched in "regulation of synaptic plasticity and structure" and "calmodulin-dependent protein kinase activity," which implicate synaptic remodeling may play a vital role in the pathogenesis of TLE. Consequently, the synaptic plasticity-related proteins and synaptic structure were investigated to verify it. It has been demonstrated that CaMKII- α , CaMKII- β , and GFAP were significant upregulated coincidently with proteomic analysis in the hippocampus of TLE rats. Moreover, the increased dendritic spines and hippocampal sclerosis further proved that synaptic plasticity involves in the development of TLE. Despite a growing neuroimaging literature on the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder (MDD), reproducible findings are lacking, probably reflecting mostly small sample sizes and heterogeneity in analytic approaches. To address these issues, the Depression Imaging REsearch ConsorTium (DIRECT) was launched. The REST-meta-MDD project, pooling 2428 functional brain images processed with a standardized pipeline across all participating sites, has been the first effort from DIRECT. In this review, we present an overview of the motivations, rationale, and principal findings of the studies so far from the REST-meta-MDD project. Findings from the first round of analyses of the pooled repository have included alterations in functional connectivity within the default mode network, in whole-brain topological properties, in dynamic features, and in functional lateralization. These well-powered exploratory observations have also provided the basis for future longitudinal hypothesis-driven research. Following these fruitful explorations, DIRECT has proceeded to its second stage of data sharing that seeks to examine ethnicity in brain alterations in MDD by extending the exclusive Chinese original sample to other ethnic groups through international collaborations. A state-of-the-art, surface-based preprocessing pipeline has also been introduced to improve sensitivity. Functional images from patients with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia will be included to identify shared and unique abnormalities across diagnosis boundaries. In addition, large-scale longitudinal studies targeting brain network alterations following antidepressant treatment, aggregation of diffusion tensor images, and the development of functional magnetic resonance imaging-guided neuromodulation approaches are underway. The nucleus accumbens (NAc) is considered a hub of reward processing and a growing body of evidence has suggested its crucial role in the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder (MDD). However, inconsistent results have been reported by studies on reward network-focused resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI). In this study, we examined functional alterations of the NAc-based reward circuits in patients with MDD via meta- and mega-analysis. First, we performed a coordinated-based meta-analysis with a new SDM-PSI method for all up-to-date rs-fMRI studies that focused on the reward circuits of patients with MDD. Then, we tested the meta-analysis results in the REST-meta-MDD database which provided anonymous rs-fMRI data from 186 recurrent MDDs and 465 healthy controls. Decreased functional connectivity (FC) within the reward system in patients with recurrent MDD was the most robust finding in this study. We also found disrupted NAc FCs in the DMN in patients with recurrent MDD compared with healthy controls. Specifically, the combination of disrupted NAc FCs within the reward network could discriminate patients with recurrent MDD from healthy controls with an optimal accuracy of 74.7%. This study confirmed the critical role of decreased FC in the reward network in the neuropathology of MDD. Disrupted inter-network connectivity between the reward network and DMN may also have contributed to the neural mechanisms of MDD. Background: Recently, functional homotopy (FH) architecture, defined as robust functional connectivity (FC) between homotopic regions, has been frequently reported to be altered in MDD patients (MDDs) but with divergent locations., Methods: In this study, we obtained resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (R-fMRI) data from 1004 MDDs (mean age, 33.88 years; age range, 18-60 years) and 898 matched healthy controls (HCs) from an aggregated dataset from 20 centers in China. We focused on interhemispheric function integration in MDDs and its correlation with clinical characteristics using voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) devised to inquire about FH patterns., Results: As compared with HCs, MDDs showed decreased VMHC in visual, motor, somatosensory, limbic, angular gyrus, and cerebellum, particularly in posterior cingulate gyrus/precuneus (PCC/PCu) (false discovery rate [FDR] q < 0.002, z = -7.07). Further analysis observed that the reduction in SMG and insula was more prominent with age, of which SMG reflected such age-related change in males instead of females. Besides, the reduction in MTG was found to be a male-special abnormal pattern in MDDs. VMHC alterations were markedly related to episode type and illness severity. The higher Hamilton Depression Rating Scale score, the more apparent VMHC reduction in the primary visual cortex. First-episode MDDs revealed stronger VMHC reduction in PCu relative to recurrent MDDs., Conclusions: We confirmed a significant VMHC reduction in MDDs in broad areas, especially in PCC/PCu. This reduction was affected by gender, age, episode type, and illness severity. Objective: To explore characteristics of the species structure of the genus Bifidobacterium at different levels of blood glucose and lipid in middle-aged and older adults in Chengdu so as to provide research basis for applying bifidobacteria in the prevention and treatment of hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia., Methods: A total of 289 middle-aged and older adults of 45 and older were recruited in Chengdu between April and August 2018. They were divided into the healthy group, the dyslipidemia group, the hyperglycemia group, and the combination group (of subjects with both dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia). The levels of their fasting blood glucose (GLU), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were examined. In addition, stool samples were collected and real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR was used for quantitative analysis of the genus Bifidobacterium and the 8 bifidobacteria most commonly found in human intestines, the results of which were then examined to identify their correlation to blood glucose and lipid levels., Results: A total of 289 samples were collected and findings of inter-group comparison of the species structure of Bifidobacterium were as follows: 1) findings regarding the Bifidobacterium species examined--there was no significant difference between groups in the detection rate and the number of species detected; the quantity of B. angulatum was significantly higher in the dyslipidemia group than that in the healthy group and that in the combination group, the quantify of B. catenulatum was significantly higher in the hyperglycemia group than that in the healthy group, and the quantity of B. dentium was significantly higher in the dyslipidemia group than that in the combination group. 2) Findings regarding the correlation between the quantity of bifidobacteria and blood glucose and lipid--at the genus level, only the dyslipidemia group showed negative correlation ( r =-0.346) between Bifidobacterium and TC. At the species level, B. bifidum was negatively correlated with TG ( r =-0.761), B. breve was negatively correlated with GLU, TC, and LDL-C ( r =-0.256, r =-0.261, and r =-0.362), B.dentium was positively correlated with GLU ( r =0.206), and B. infantis was negatively correlated with TC ( r =-0.334) in the healthy group. In the hyperglycemia group, B. catenulatum and B. infantis were both positively correlated with HDL-C ( r =0.307 and r =0.525). In the combination group, B. bifidum was negatively correlated with HDL-C ( r =-0.828), while B. breve was positively correlated with TG and HDL-C ( r =0.427 and r =0.375)., Conclusion: Middle-aged and older adults with dyslipidemia and/or hyperglycemia were significantly different from healthy subjects in their testing results for Bifidobacterium . Compared with the structure of Bifidobacterium species, the changes in the number of Bifidobacterium species detected were more closely correlated to the levels of blood glucose and blood lipid, showing unique characteristics in different situations, which may indicate potential application as indicators for glucose and lipid metabolism., (Copyright© by Editorial Board of Journal of Sichuan University (Medical Sciences).)

Objective: While gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are very common in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), few studies have investigated the neural basis behind these symptoms. In this study, we sought to elucidate the neural basis of GI symptoms in MDD patients by analyzing the changes in regional gray matter volume (GMV) and gray matter density (GMD) in brain structure., Method: Subjects were recruited from 13 clinical centers and categorized into three groups, each of which is based on the presence or absence of GI symptoms: the GI symptoms group (MDD patients with at least one GI symptom), the non-GI symptoms group (MDD patients without any GI symptoms), and the healthy control group (HCs). Structural magnetic resonance images (MRI) were collected of 335 patients in the GI symptoms group, 149 patients in the non-GI symptoms group, and 446 patients in the healthy control group. The 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17) was administered to all patients. Correlation analysis and logistic regression analysis were used to determine if there was a correlation between the altered brain regions and the clinical symptoms., Results: There were significantly higher HAMD-17 scores in the GI symptoms group than that of the non-GI symptoms group (P < 0.001). Both GMV and GMD were significant different among the three groups for the bilateral superior temporal gyrus, bilateral middle temporal gyrus, left lingual gyrus, bilateral caudate nucleus, right Fusiform gyrus and bilateral Thalamus (GRF correction, cluster-P < 0.01, voxel-P < 0.001). Compared to the HC group, the GI symptoms group demonstrated increased GMV and GMD in the bilateral superior temporal gyrus, and the non-GI symptoms group demonstrated an increased GMV and GMD in the right superior temporal gyrus, right fusiform gyrus and decreased GMV in the right Caudate nucleus (GRF correction, cluster-P < 0.01, voxel-P < 0.001). Compared to the non-GI symptoms group, the GI symptoms group demonstrated significantly increased GMV and GMD in the bilateral thalamus, as well as decreased GMV in the bilateral superior temporal gyrus and bilateral insula lobe (GRF correction, cluster-P < 0.01, voxel-P < 0.001). While these changed brain areas had significantly association with GI symptoms (P < 0.001), they were not correlated with depressive symptoms (P > 0.05). Risk factors for gastrointestinal symptoms in MDD patients (p < 0.05) included age, increased GMD in the right thalamus, and decreased GMV in the bilateral superior temporal gyrus and left Insula lobe., Conclusion: MDD patients with GI symptoms have more severe depressive symptoms. MDD patients with GI symptoms exhibited larger GMV and GMD in the bilateral thalamus, and smaller GMV in the bilateral superior temporal gyrus and bilateral insula lobe that were correlated with GI symptoms, and some of them and age may contribute to the presence of GI symptoms in MDD patients., (Copyright © 2021. Aberrant topological organization of whole-brain networks has been inconsistently reported in studies of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), reflecting limited sample sizes. To address this issue, we utilized a big data sample of MDD patients from the REST-meta-MDD Project, including 821 MDD patients and 765 normal controls (NCs) from 16 sites. Using the Dosenbach 160 node atlas, we examined whole-brain functional networks and extracted topological features (e.g., global and local efficiency, nodal efficiency, and degree) using graph theory-based methods. Linear mixed-effect models were used for group comparisons to control for site variability; robustness of results was confirmed (e.g., multiple topological parameters, different node definitions, and several head motion control strategies were applied). We found decreased global and local efficiency in patients with MDD compared to NCs. At the nodal level, patients with MDD were characterized by decreased nodal degrees in the somatomotor network (SMN), dorsal attention network (DAN) and visual network (VN) and decreased nodal efficiency in the default mode network (DMN), SMN, DAN, and VN. These topological differences were mostly driven by recurrent MDD patients, rather than first-episode drug naive (FEDN) patients with MDD. In this highly powered multisite study, we observed disrupted topological architecture of functional brain networks in MDD, suggesting both locally and globally decreased efficiency in brain networks., (© 2021. Background and Purpose: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is a common chronic neurological disease that is often invulnerable to anti-epileptic drugs. Increasing data have demonstrated that acetylcholine (ACh) and cholinergic neurotransmission are involved in the pathophysiology of epilepsy. Cytisine, a full agonist of α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (α7nAChRs) and a partial agonist of α4β2nAChRs, has been widely applied for smoking cessation and has shown neuroprotection in neurological diseases. However, whether cytisine plays a role in treating TLE has not yet been determined. Experimental Approach: In this study, cytisine was injected intraperitoneally into pilocarpine-induced epileptic rats for three weeks. Alpha-bungarotoxin (α-bgt), a specific α7nAChR antagonist, was used to evaluate the mechanism of action of cytisine. Rats were assayed for the occurrence of seizures and cognitive function by video surveillance and Morris water maze. Hippocampal injuries and synaptic structure were assessed by Nissl staining and Golgi staining. Furthermore, levels of glutamate, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), ACh, and α7nAChRs were measured. Results: Cytisine significantly reduced seizures and hippocampal damage while improving cognition and inhibiting synaptic remodeling in TLE rats. Additionally, cytisine decreased glutamate levels without altering GABA levels, and increased ACh levels and α7nAChR expression in the hippocampi of TLE rats. α-bgt antagonized the above-mentioned effects of cytisine treatment. Conclusion and Implications: Taken together, these findings indicate that cytisine exerted an anti-epileptic and neuroprotective effect in TLE rats via activation of α7nAChRs, which was associated with a decrease in glutamate levels, inhibition of synaptic remodeling, and improvement of cholinergic transmission in the hippocampus. Background: Functional specialization is a feature of human brain for understanding the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder (MDD). The degree of human specialization refers to within and cross hemispheric interactions. However, most previous studies only focused on interhemispheric connectivity in MDD, and the results varied across studies. Hence, brain functional connectivity asymmetry in MDD should be further studied., Methods: Resting-state fMRI data of 753 patients with MDD and 451 healthy controls were provided by REST-meta-MDD Project. Twenty-five project contributors preprocessed their data locally with the Data Processing Assistant State fMRI software and shared final indices. The parameter of asymmetry (PAS), a novel voxel-based whole-brain quantitative measure that reflects inter- and intrahemispheric asymmetry, was reported. We also examined the effects of age, sex and clinical variables (including symptom severity, illness duration and three depressive phenotypes)., Results: Compared with healthy controls, patients with MDD showed increased PAS scores (decreased hemispheric specialization) in most of the areas of default mode network, control network, attention network and some regions in the cerebellum and visual cortex. Demographic characteristics and clinical variables have significant effects on these abnormalities., Limitations: Although a large sample size could improve statistical power, future independent efforts are needed to confirm our results., Conclusions: Our results highlight the idea that many brain networks contribute to broad clinical pathophysiology of MDD, and indicate that a lateralized, efficient and economical brain information processing system is disrupted in MDD. Long non-coding (lnc) RNAs serve crucial functions in human cancers. However, the involvement of the lncRNA B4GALT1-antisense RNA 1 (AS1) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has not been extensively studied. Reverse transcription-quantitative PCR was performed to detect B4GALT1-AS1 levels in NSCLC tissues and cell lines. Potential influences of B4GALT1-AS1 on biological functions of NSCLC were assessed through a series of in vitro experiments, and the molecular mechanism was determined via RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) and bioinformatics analyses. The results of the present study demonstrated that knockdown of B4GALT1-AS1 significantly attenuated the proliferative ability and clonality of H1299 and A549 cells. In the present study, B4GALT1-AS1 competed as an endogenous RNA by sequestering microRNA-30e (miR-30e) leading to an enhanced expression of SRY-box transcription factor 9 (SOX9). The effects of silencing B4GALT1-AS1 on NSCLC cells proliferation could be ameliorated by inhibiting miR-30e or restoring SOX9. Hence, B4GALT1-AS1 acted as a lncRNA that drives tumor progression in NSCLC via the regulation of the miR-30e/SOX9 axis. Previous studies reported a dysregulation of micro (mi)R-208b-5p expression level in various types of human cancer; however, the role of miR-208-5p in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains unclear. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine whether miR-208b-5p could regulate NSCLC progression. A total of 62 pairs of primary tumor and adjacent normal tissues were collected from patients with NSCLC. miR-208b-5p expression level was determined by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Furthermore, miR-208b-5p mimics was transfected into NSCLC A549 and H1299 cells in order to upregulate miR-208b-5p expression. Dual-luciferase reporter assay was utilized to investigate the associations between miR-208b-5p and IL9 mRNA. The results demonstrated that miR-208b-5p expression decreased in NSCLC tissues and cell lines. Furthermore, miR-208b-5p overexpression inhibited A549 and H1299 cell proliferation and invasiveness. miR-208b-5p was demonstrated to bind directly to the 3' untranslated region of interleukin-9 (IL-9) and therefore decreased its expression. In the NSCLC-derived cell lines, miR-208b-5p inactivated IL-9/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) signaling pathway. Furthermore, enhanced IL-9 level decreased the miR-208b-5p-mediated suppression of epithelial-mesenchymal transition in NSCLC cells by inactivating the STAT3 signaling pathway. In conclusion, the findings from this study demonstrated that miR-208b-5p inhibited migration and invasion of NSCLC cells. BACKGROUND Artemisia annua exerts powerful effects in non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). Some studies have shown that Artemisia annua possesses the characteristics of new therapeutic drugs for NSCLC patients. However, the underlying molecular mechanism of Artemisia annua anti-NSCLC is not yet fully elucidated because Artemisia annua contains hundreds of ingredients. This study aimed to conduct network pharmacological analysis on the mechanism of action of Artemisia annua against NSCLC. MATERIAL AND METHODS The active ingredients and corresponding potential targets of Artemisia annua were searched and screened in the Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology Database and Analysis Platform (TCMSP). Then through The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) databases to establish NSCLC related targets. Based on the matching results of Artemisia annua potential targets and NSCLC targets, a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed to analyze the interactions between these targets and topologically screen the central targets. Furthermore, Gene Ontology (GO) biological functions analysis and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) signal pathways enrichment were carried out. RESULTS There were 19 main active ingredients of Artemisia annua screened for target prediction; 40 NSCLC-related common targets were identified via multiple NSCLC databases. The node area and corresponding degree value of AKT1, MYC, CCND1, VEGFA, JUN, MAPK1, EGFR, and ESR1 were large and could be easily found in the PPI network. The aforementioned results were further verified by the analysis of GO biological function and KEGG enrichment analysis. CONCLUSIONS The network pharmacology analysis reveals the molecular biological mechanism of Artemisia annua anti-NSCLC via multiple active components, multi-channels, and multi-targets. This suggests that Artemisia annua might be developed as a promising anti-NSCLC drug.

Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is heterogeneous disorder associated with aberrant functional connectivity within the default mode network (DMN). This study focused on data-driven identification and validation of potential DMN-pattern-based MDD subtypes to parse heterogeneity of the disorder., Methods: The sample comprised 1397 participants including 690 patients with MDD and 707 healthy controls (HC) registered from multiple sites based on the REST-meta-MDD Project in China. Baseline resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data was recorded for each participant. Discriminative features were selected from DMN between patients and HC. Patient subgroups were defined by K-means and principle component analysis in the multi-site datasets and validated in an independent single-site dataset. Statistical significance of resultant clustering were confirmed. Demographic and clinical variables were compared between identified patient subgroups., Results: Two MDD subgroups with differing functional connectivity profiles of DMN were identified in the multi-site datasets, and relatively stable in different validation samples. The predominant dysfunctional connectivity profiles were detected among superior frontal cortex, ventral medial prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate cortex and precuneus, whereas one subgroup exhibited increases of connectivity (hyperDMN MDD) and another subgroup showed decreases of connectivity (hypoDMN MDD). The hyperDMN subgroup in the discovery dataset had age-related severity of depressive symptoms. Patient subgroups had comparable demographic and clinical symptom variables., Conclusions: Findings suggest the existence of two neural subtypes of MDD associated with different dysfunctional DMN connectivity patterns, which may provide useful evidence for parsing heterogeneity of depression and be valuable to inform the search for personalized treatment strategies., (Copyright © 2020 The Author(s). Major depressive disorder (MDD) is common and disabling, but its neuropathophysiology remains unclear. Most studies of functional brain networks in MDD have had limited statistical power and data analysis approaches have varied widely. The REST-meta-MDD Project of resting-state fMRI (R-fMRI) addresses these issues. Twenty-five research groups in China established the REST-meta-MDD Consortium by contributing R-fMRI data from 1,300 patients with MDD and 1,128 normal controls (NCs). Data were preprocessed locally with a standardized protocol before aggregated group analyses. We focused on functional connectivity (FC) within the default mode network (DMN), frequently reported to be increased in MDD. Instead, we found decreased DMN FC when we compared 848 patients with MDD to 794 NCs from 17 sites after data exclusion. We found FC reduction only in recurrent MDD, not in first-episode drug-naïve MDD. Decreased DMN FC was associated with medication usage but not with MDD duration. DMN FC was also positively related to symptom severity but only in recurrent MDD. Exploratory analyses also revealed alterations in FC of visual, sensory-motor, and dorsal attention networks in MDD. We confirmed the key role of DMN in MDD but found reduced rather than increased FC within the DMN. Future studies should test whether decreased DMN FC mediates response to treatment. Lactate dehydrogenase A (LDH-A) is a key enzyme during glycolysis, which increases the synthesis of related proteins and has elevated activity in cancer cells. The role of LDH-A in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) progression was investigated in the present study. Expression levels of LDH-A were assessed in LUAD samples, and the relationship between LDH-A expression status and the prognosis of LUAD patients was confirmed. The effect of LDH-A on proliferation, invasion, migration, and colony formation of cancer cells was assessed. We further determined the role of LDH-A in tumor growth in vivo by using xenograft LUAD tumor models. The potential mechanism of LDH-A promotion in LUAD progression was explored. LDH-A showed an abnormally high expression in LUAD, which is closely associated with poor prognosis in patients with LUAD. In in vitro experiments, silencing LDH-A expression in LUAD cells could effectively inhibit proliferation, invasion, migration, and colony formation of cancer cells. In in vivo experiments, tumor growth was markedly inhibited by LDH-A silencing in a xenograft model of LUAD. Notably, LDH-A could also promote tumor progression by regulating epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related molecules. Clenbuterol (CLB) is harmful to human health when used long term, and it has been listed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). In this work, a novel zinc-based metal-organic frameworks-reduced graphene oxide-CdTe quantum dots (ZnMOF-RGO-CdTe QDs) hybrid was used to construct an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor for detecting CLB. CdTe QDs, loaded by RGO, exhibited an enhanced ECL signal. In addition, the ZnMOFs catalyzed OH • generation by coreactant H 2 O 2 , which further strengthened the ECL signal of the CdTe QDs. The integration of ZnMOFs and RGO-CdTe QDs endowed the sensor with high sensitivity for CLB detection. The intensity of the ECL signal increased as the concentration of CLB increased. The linear range of CLB detection was 3.0 × 10 -13  M to 6.0 × 10 -10  M, and the detection limit was estimated to be 1.0 × 10 -13  M. Furthermore, the sensor displayed a good repeatability and stability. The ZnMOF-RGO-CdTe QD hybrids described in this study provide a foundation for the development of new methods of detecting CLB. In this paper, we generalize the concept of well-posedness to a class of split hemivariational inequalities. By imposing very mild assumptions on involved operators, we establish some metric characterizations of the well-posedness for the split hemivariational inequality. The association between cognitive emotion regulation strategy use and adolescents' risk behavior has long been emphasized. To identify coping profiles of Chinese adolescents having unprotected sex and to examine the characteristics and associations among those subgroups, 541 adolescents (age, 14-19 years) were screened from secondary schools in 10 Chinese cities. By latent profile analysis (LPA), the participants were identified into three latent profiles: the low reaction profile (LRP, N = 70), the medium reaction profile (MRP, N = 369), and the high reaction profile (HRP, N = 102) based on nine subscales of the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ). By one-way analysis of variance, chi-square tests, and multivariate logistic regression analysis, we found that: the HRP has the highest level of using eight strategies and the lowest unprotected sex, meanwhile the LRP has the lowest level of using nine strategies and the highest unprotected sex among three groups (both p < .05). The low response coping was more prevalent among boys and younger students. It indicates that more active cognitive coping, using both adaptive and maladaptive strategies, may associate with less unprotected sex. The programs of enhancing active copying may be targeted in interventions aiming to reduce adolescent unprotected sex.

Gene-environment interactions that moderate aggressive behavior have been identified independently in the serotonin transporter (5-HTT) gene and monoamine oxidase A gene (MAOA). The aim of the present study was to investigate epistasis interactions between MAOA-variable number tandem repeat (VNTR), 5-HTTlinked polymorphism (LPR) and child abuse and the effects of these on aggressive tendencies in a group of otherwise healthy adolescents. A group of 546 Chinese male adolescents completed the Child Trauma Questionnaire and Youth self-report of the Child Behavior Checklist. Buccal cells were collected for DNA analysis. The effects of childhood abuse, MAOA-VNTR, 5-HTTLPR genotypes and their interactive gene-gene-environmental effects on aggressive behavior were analyzed using a linear regression model. The effect of child maltreatment was significant, and a three-way interaction among MAOA-VNTR, 5-HTTLPR and sexual abuse (SA) relating to aggressive behaviors was identified. Chinese male adolescents with high expression of the MAOA-VNTR allele and 5-HTTLPR "SS" genotype exhibited the highest aggression tendencies with an increase in SA during childhood. The findings reported support aggression being a complex behavior involving the synergistic effects of gene-gene-environment interactions.

Purpose: This single-arm, open-label study aimed to explore the effects of extended-release paliperidone on social and cognitive function in patients with schizophrenia., Methods: Paliperidone extended-release (flexible dose ranging from 3 to 12 mg/day orally) was administered for 24 weeks in patients with schizophrenia. Patient function was assessed using the personal and social performance scale, measurement and treatment research to improve cognition in schizophrenia initiative-consensus cognitive battery, positive and negative syndrome scale, and clinical global impression-severity., Results: Ninety patients were included in the full analysis set, while 72 patients were included in the per protocol set. The personal and social performance score was 54.3±14.3 at baseline, and significantly increased to 73.4±12.6 at week 24 (P<0.001). For the measurement and treatment research to improve cognition in schizophrenia initiative-consensus cognitive battery assessment, six of the nine individual subtests, six of the seven cognitive domains, and total cognitive scores improved significantly (P<0.05) between baseline and endpoint. positive and negative syndrome scale total scores and clinical global impression-severity scores decreased gradually (P<0.001) from week 4 to the conclusion of the study., Conclusion: Paliperidone extended-release treatment significantly improves social and neurocognitive function as well as symptoms in Chinese patients with schizophrenia.

Objective: To explore the therapeutic effects of internal fixation with Herbert screws for the treatment of Pipkin type I and type II femoral head fractures., Methods: From January 2008 to December 2012, 23 patients with Pipkin type I and type II femoral head fractures were treated with open reduction and internal fixation by Herbert screws through Kocher-Langenbeck approach. Twenty-three patients (aged 18 to 52 years with a mean of 35.5 years, including 18 males and 5 females patients, 8 left hips and 15 right hips) with femoral head fractures and posterior hip dislocation. The fracture was classified according to Pipkin classification based on the radiographic findings, 5 patients had type I and 18 had type II fractures. The duration time from admission to the operation ranged from 6 to 72 h (averaged 32 h). The clinical and radiographic outcomes of the patients were measured using Thompson-Epstein scoring scale. The Harris hip score(HHS) was used to evaluate and compare hip functions at the latest follow-up between affected and healthy sides., Results: All the patients were followed up, and the duration ranged from 20 to 48 months (averaged 30 months). According to Thompson-Epstein system, 12 patients got an excellent result, 6 good, 4 fair and 1 poor. The average HHS at the finial follow-up was 87.80 ± 8.46 (ranged from 66 to 95), which is similar to that in the healthy side 90.10 ± 6.35 (ranged from 72 to 98) (t = 1.044, P = 0.302). The complications such as deep infection, and deep vein thrombosis were not found. At the 3rd year during follow-up,4 patients had avascular necrosis of femoral head. At the 1st year of follow-up, 1 patient had hip pain after walking,screws loosening and shift after trauma,and serious complications of traumatic arthritis. All the 5 patients were treated with total hip arthroplasties., Conclusion: The treatment of internal fixation with Herbert screws through the Kocher-Langenbeck approach is effective for Pipkin type I and type II femoral head fracture. The method is reliable and valuable for recommendation. However, such fracture may have avascular necrosis of femoral head and complication of traumatic arthritis, which should be observed carefully in clinic with preparation of the prevention and treatment measures.

Objective: Since the 1960s, fentanyl has been used to replace morphine nd other opioids due to its higher potency in the treatment of acute pain; since the 1990s, it has also been administrated to control chronic pain by using transdermal fentanyl device system. It is crucial and of utmost importance and crucial to validate a sensitive method for the quantification of transdermal fentanyl in human plasma., Materials and Methods: A rapid, simple and sensitive high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) method has been established and validated for the determination of transdermal fentanyl in human plasma using fentanyl-D5 as an internal standard (IS). Following liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) with n-hexane, the extracts were separated on a Thermo Hypersil ODS(C18) column (2.1 × 150 mm i.d., 5 μm) interfaced with a triple-quadrupole tandem mass spectrometer using positive electrospray ionization., Results and Conclusions: Quantification of fentanyl was carried out by multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) of the transitions at m/z 337.1→188.0 for fentanyl and 341.9→187.9 for IS. The lower limit of quantification was 9.75 pg×mL-1, and the test showed a linear range of 9.75 - 10,000 pg×mL-1. The validated method was subsequently applied to a bioequivalence (BE) study in 24 healthy Chinese volunteers by using transdermal fentanyl patches.

This study analyzed the effects of brassinolide (BL) on Na⁺ accumulation, leaf physiological characteristics and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) of cotton leaves under NaCl stress. The results showed that NaCl stress increased the Na⁺, proline and MDA content in the leaves of Sumian 12 and Sumian 22, and changed the expression level of genes in cotton leaves. The application of BL counteracted the NaCl stress-induced growth inhibition in the two tested cotton cultivars. It reduced the accumulation of Na⁺, enhanced proline content, and resulted in a decrease in the MDA content of NaCl-stressed leaves, and the influence of BL on salt-stressed Sumian 12 plants was more pronounced than that on Sumian 22. The digital gene expression analysis in Sumian 12 indicated that BL application significantly influenced the gene expression in NaCl-stressed cotton leaves, the gene expression pattern as a result of the root applied BL on NaCl-stressed cotton treatment (BL+NaCl) was similar to the normal cotton plants (CK). Our results indicated that brassinolide alleviated NaCl stress on cotton through improving leaf physiological characteristics and gene expression, and resulted in an increase in biomass of NaCl-stressed cotton.

Objective: Tea is the most consumed beverage in the world. (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a major green tea polyphenol, is effective in the prevention of several chronic diseases, and is marketed as part of many dietary supplements. We have now examined the myocardiotoxic effect of high doses of EGCG in mice., Results: EGCG (500 and 1000 mg/kg·d) induced cardiac collagen synthesis and fibrosis-related protein expression, such as connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) and fibronectin (FN) in mice. Moreover, EGCG decreased the protein expression of p-AMPK and increased the levels of p-p70S6 K and p-S6., Conclusion: This is the first evidence that high oral doses of EGCG could induce cardiac fibrosis, and shed new light on the understanding of EGCG-mediated myocardiotoxicity.

Introduction: Comparisons of the characteristics between the influenza A (H1N1) pdm09 and common seasonal influenza are important for both clinical management and epidemiological studies. However, the differences between pandemic and seasonal influenza during the post-pandemic period are poorly understood., Objectives: The aim of our research was to investigate clinical and immune response differences between patients with influenza A (H1N1) pdm09 pneumonia and seasonal influenza A (H3N2) pneumonia in the post-pandemic period., Methods: During the first flu season in post-pandemic period, patients from Beijing Network for Adult Community-Acquired Pneumonia present A (H1N1) pdm09 or A (H3N2) influenza were compared concurrently in the aspects of clinical characteristics and inflammatory profile in acute phase., Result: Patients with A (H1N1) pdm09 influenza pneumonia showed a close mean age to A (H3N2) pneumonia (51 ± 20 vs 53 ± 16, mean ± standard deviation, years) but tended to have more underlying diseases (32.8% vs 10%, P=0.036). Although clinical characteristics were similar, no statistical difference were found in pneumonia severity index (PSI) score or intensive care unit admission rate or mortality, patients in A (H1N1) pdm09 cohort present higher levels of aspartate aminotransferase, lactase dehydrogenase (P=0.006, 0.018, respectively) in blood and also longer duration of fever than A (H3N2) cohort. Levels of interleukin (IL)-10 and IL-12 (p70) were higher in A (H1N1) pdm09 cohort (P=0.031, 0.047, respectively)., Conclusios: During the first post-pandemic flu season, patients with the A (H1N1) pdm09 pneumonia showed similar clinical characteristics but slightly higher disease severity and stronger systemic inflammatory response than A (H3N2) pneumonia., (© 2013 The Authors. Objective: To investigate the clinical outcomes of surgical treatment of fracture of the fifth metatarsal base combined with degree III lateral ligament injury of ankle., Methods: From January 2008 to December 2011, 32 patients with fracture of the fifth metatarsal base combined with degree III lateral ligament injury of ankle were treated with surgery. Fractures were fixed with compressed canulated screw and ligaments were repaired with suture anchors. After operation, ankle joints were fixed in neutral position and slightly valgus position by plaster slab. Taking out stitch was performed at 2 weeks after operation and non-weight loading walking by double crutches support started; after the 6 weeks, remove the gypsum and part-weight loading walking by brace protection; at the 8 weeks after operation, completely weight loading walking was permitted. American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) was used to evaluate the clinical effect., Results: Thirty-two patients were followed up from 8 to 18 months with an average of 12 months. All fractures obtained healing with an average time of 12.5 weeks (ranged, 8 to 24 weeks). According to the standard of AOFAS, 18 cases got excellent results and 14 good., Conclusion: The method that fracture fixation with compressed canulated screw and ligament repair with suture anchors can obtain satisfactory effects in treating fracture of the fifth metatarsal base and degree III lateral ligament injury of ankle.

Background: The serotonin transporter (5-HTT) gene may play an important role in the onset and development of mental disorders. Past studies have tested whether a functional polymorphism in the 5-HTT gene linked promoter region (5-HTTLPR) moderated the association between stress and depressive symptoms, but the results of these studies were inconsistent. Thus, the aim of the current study was to examine the interaction between 5-HTTLPR and stress that predict depressive symptoms in Chinese adolescents., Methods: A total of 252 healthy adolescents (131 females and 121 males, aged from 14 to 18, mean = 16.00, standard deviation = 0.60) participated in this study. During the initial assessment, all participants completed the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and Adolescent Life Events Questionnaire (ALEQ) and were genotyped for the 5-HTTLPR polymorphism. Participants subsequently completed CES-D and ALEQ once every three months during the subsequent 24 months. A multilevel model was used to investigate the 5-HTTLPR × stress interaction in predicting depressive symptoms., Results: The results indicated no main effect of 5-HTTLPR and a significant 5-HTTLPR × stress interaction in females only. Females with at least one 5-HTTLPR S allele exhibited more depressive symptoms under stressful situations. No significant 5-HTTLPR × stress interaction was found in males., Conclusions: In Chinese adolescents, there are gender differences on the interaction between 5-HTTLPR and stress that predict depressive symptoms. The association between stress and depressive symptoms is moderated by 5-HTTLPR in Chinese female adolescents.

The Cys2/His2-type zinc finger proteins have been implicated in different cellular processes involved in plant development and stress responses. Through microarray analysis, a salt-responsive zinc finger protein gene ZFP179 was identified and subsequently cloned from rice seedlings. ZFP179 encodes a 17.95 kDa protein with two C2H2-type zinc finger motifs having transcriptional activation activity. The real-time RT-PCR analysis showed that ZFP179 was highly expressed in immature spikes, and markedly induced in the seedlings by NaCl, PEG 6000, and ABA treatments. Overexpression of ZFP179 in rice increased salt tolerance and the transgenic seedlings showed hypersensitivity to exogenous ABA. The increased levels of free proline and soluble sugars were observed in transgenic plants compared to wild-type plants under salt stress. The ZFP179 transgenic rice exhibited significantly increased tolerance to oxidative stress, the reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging ability, and expression levels of a number of stress-related genes, including OsDREB2A, OsP5CS OsProT, and OsLea3 under salt stress. Our studies suggest that ZFP179 plays a crucial role in the plant response to salt stress, and is useful in developing transgenic crops with enhanced tolerance to salt stress.

The aim of this paper is to assess the subjective well-being of chronically ill inpatients to know which its influential factors are, what the significant predictors of SWB are, and what we can do in nursing care. A sample of 290 inpatients with chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases responded to questionnaires assessing well-being, anxiety, and depression and gave suggestions about nursing during an interview. It was shown that these patients' subjective well-being was lower than that of the general population. Using ANOVA, Pearson correlations, and multivariate stepwise regression analysis, trait anxiety, anxiety, and means of payment were found to significantly influence subjective well-being. Interventions targeting trait anxiety, anxiety, and means of payments, such as paying more attention to individuals' psychological symptoms, implementing more cost-effective treatment or caring, and establishing positive relationship with patients are necessary to improve inpatients' subjective well-being.

We previously identified a salt and drought stress-responsive TFIIIA-type zinc finger protein gene ZFP252 from rice. Here we report the functional analysis of ZFP252 using gain- and loss-of-function strategies. We found that overexpression of ZFP252 in rice increased the amount of free proline and soluble sugars, elevated the expression of stress defense genes and enhanced rice tolerance to salt and drought stresses, as compared with ZFP252 antisense and non-transgenic plants. Our findings suggest that ZFP252 plays an important role in rice response to salt and drought stresses and is useful in engineering crop plants with enhanced tolerance to salt and drought stresses.

Objective: To evaluate the association between metabolism of arsenic and DNA oxidative damage in workers in a arsenic mill., Methods: Urinary organic arsenic and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanine were detected in 37 workers highly exposed to arsenic and 16 administrative and logistic staff with mild exposure in a arsenic mill in Yunnan province, and also 28 local people who did not have the exposure in the near past time. The correlation between metabolism of arsenic and DNA oxidative damage was evaluated., Results: The urinary organic arsenic concentration was respectively (0.48 +/- 0.37) mg/L and (0.08 +/- 0.05) mg/L for men with high and low exposure, and was respectively 0.11 mg/L and (0.30 +/- 0.24) mg/ L for women with high and low exposure, while it was lower than 0.02 mg/L in the controls. Urinary 8-hydroxydeoxyguanine concentration was (18.07 +/- 11.68) micromol/mol creatinine, (11.79 +/- 8.25) micromol/mol creatinine, (10.07 +/- 3.04) micromol/mol creatinine for the males with high and low exposure and of controls, respectively, (P < 0.05), and it was 84.35 micromol/mol creatinine, (21.27 +/- 5.89) micromol/mol creatinine, (14.43 +/- 2.58) micromol/mol creatinine for females with high and low exposure and of controls, respectively. The female workers exposed to arsenic had higher urinary 8-hydroxydeoxyguanine levels than males did (P < 0.05). The increased tendencies of urinary 8-hydroxydeoxyguanine levels with the organic arsenic concentration were found in workers (r(s) = 0.279, P = 0.019)., Conclusion: Occupational individuals exposed to arsenic have obvious DNA oxidative damage, which is more severe in females. The difference of metabolism of arsenic may play a key role.

A rice zinc-finger protein gene, RZF71, encoding the C2H2-type zinc-finger transcription factor was isolated from rice (Oryza sativa L. subs. Japonica) by RT-PCR approach. Gene RZF71 encodes a 25 kDa protein with 250 amino acids, which contains two typical C2H2 zinc finger domains. The expression profiling showed that RZF71 was constitutively expressed in roots, culms, leaves, and flowering spikes. The semi-quantitative RT-PCR assay showed RZF71 was strongly induced by high-salinity and 20% PEG6000 treatments, but not regulated by low temperature and ABA (abscisic acid) treatments. Tran-sient expression of the RZF71-GFP protein in onion epidermal cell showed that RZF71 was localized in cell nuclei. These results indicated that the RZF71 may play an important role in rice responses to salt and osmotic stresses as a transcription factor.

Objective: To study the ERP old/new effects during a recognition task for Chinese words., Method: Twenty one healthy right-handed volunteers received a Chinese words recognition task. The stimuli were meaningful words consisting of two Chinese characters. The EEG signals were recorded from 9 scalp sites of the extended 10-20 systems., Result: Compared with the new words, the old words elicited larger N320 (the frontal old/new effect) at the frontal brain areas and larger LPC (the parietal old/new effect) at the parietal brain areas. And the peak of LPC appeared significantly earlier in old words ERPs than in new words ERPs., Conclusion: The old/new effect is significant for the recognition of Chinese words, which also consists of the frontal old/new effect and the parietal old/new effect. The parietal old/new effect is positive-going, but the frontal old/new effect is negative-going. The frontal old/new effect might be affected by the language and material.
