Morpholine motifs have been used extensively as targeting moieties for lysosomes, primarily in fluorescence imaging agents. Traditionally these imaging agents are based on organic molecules which have several shortcomings including small Stokes shifts, short emission lifetimes, and susceptibility to photobleaching. To explore alternative lysosome targeting imaging agents we have used a rhenium based phosphorescent platform which has been previously demonstrated to have an improved Stokes shift, a long lifetime emission, and is highly photostable. Rhenium complexes containing morpholine substituted ligands were designed to accumulate in acidic compartments. Two of the three complexes prepared exhibited bright emission in cells, when incubated at low concentrations (20 μM) and were non-toxic at concentrations as high as 100 μM, making them suitable for live cell imaging. We show that the rhenium complexes are amenable to chemical modification and that the morpholine targeted derivatives can be used for live cell confocal fluorescence imaging of endosomes-lysosomes.

While a multitude of studies have appeared touting the use of molecules as electronic components, the design of molecular switches is crucial for the next steps in molecular electronics. In this work, single-molecule devices incorporating spiropyrans, made using break junction techniques, are described. Linear spiropyrans with electrode-contacting groups linked by alkynyl spacers to both the indoline and chromenone moieties have previously provided very low conductance values, and removing the alkynyl spacer has resulted in a total loss of conductance. An orthogonal T-shaped approach to single-molecule junctions incorporating spiropyran moieties in which the conducting pathway lies orthogonal to the molecule backbone is described and characterized. This approach has provided singlemolecule conductance features with good correlation to molecular length. Additional higher conducting states are accessible using switching induced by UV light or protonation. Theoretical modeling demonstrates that upon (photo)chemical isomerization to the merocyanine, two cooperating phenomena increase conductance: release of steric hindrance allows the conductance pathway to become more planar (raising the mid-bandgap transmission) and a bound state introduces sharp interference near the Fermi level of the electrodes similarly responding to the change in state. Functionalising organic molecular photoswitches with metal complexes has been shown to alter and enhance their switching states. These organometallic photoswitches provide a promising basis for novel smart molecular materials and molecular electronic devices. We have detailed the synthesis and characterisation of mono- and bimetallic half-sandwich ruthenium and iron complexes functionalised with alkynyl dihydropyrenes (DHP). Their electronic and photophysical properties were determined by the use of chemical, electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical techniques. The introduction of the metal alkynyl moiety allows access to additional redox and protonation states not accessible by the DHP alone. An additional metal alkynyl moiety inhibits observable photochromic switching. Analysis of the NIR and IR bands in the mixed valence complexes suggests there is a high degree of charge delocalisation across the DHP.

Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies for a variety of metal ion complexes of functionalised sarcophagines (sarcophagine=sar=3,6,10,13,16,19-hexa-azabicyclo[6.6.6]icosane) have further confirmed not only that the form of the metal ion/sar unit is unique for each metal, albeit with a sensitivity of the conformation to the associated counter anions, but also that for any given metal and ligand substituent, the dimensions (bond lengths and angles) of the complex and the substituent at the secondary nitrogen centres do not differ significantly from those of the isolated components. Despite this, where the substituent contains reactive sites, the reactivity differs markedly from that of their form in an uncoordinated substrate. Rationalisations are offered for these differences, in part through the use of Hirshfeld surface analysis of the intermolecular interactions. The hybrid salt bis-(2-methyl-imidazo[1,5- a ]pyridin-2-ium) hexa-chlorido-stannate(IV), (C 8 H 9 N 2 ) 2 [SnCl 6 ], crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P 2 1 / n with the asymmetric unit containing an Sn 0.5 Cl 3 fragment (Sn site symmetry ) and one organic cation. The five- and six-membered rings in the cation are nearly coplanar; bond lengths in the pyridinium ring of the fused core are as expected; the C-N/C bond distances in the imidazolium entity fall in the range 1.337 (5)-1.401 (5) Å. The octa-hedral SnCl 6 2- dianion is almost undistorted with the Sn-Cl distances varying from 2.4255 (9) to 2.4881 (8) Å and the cis Cl-Sn-Cl angles approaching 90°. In the crystal, π-stacked chains of cations and loosely packed SnCl 6 2- dianions form separate sheets alternating parallel to (101). Most of the numerous C-H⋯Cl-Sn contacts between the organic and inorganic counterparts with the H⋯Cl distances above the van der Waals contact limit of 2.85 Å are considered a result of crystal packing., (© Vassilyeva et al. 2023.)

This paper describes the syntheses of several functionalized dihydropyrene (DHP) molecular switches with different substitution patterns. Regioselective nucleophilic alkylation of a 5-substituted dimethyl isophthalate allowed the development of a workable synthetic protocol for the preparation of 2,7-alkyne-functionalized DHPs. Synthesis of DHPs with surface-anchoring groups in the 2,7- and 4,9-positions is described. The molecular structures of several intermediates and DHPs were elucidated by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. Molecular properties and switching capabilities of both types of DHPs were assessed by light irradiation experiments, spectroelectrochemistry, and cyclic voltammetry. Spectroelectrochemistry, in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, shows reversible electrochemical switching from the DHP forms to the cyclophanediene (CPD) forms. Charge-transport behavior was assessed in single-molecule scanning tunneling microscope (STM) break junctions, combined with density functional theory-based quantum transport calculations. All DHPs with surface-contacting groups form stable molecular junctions. Experiments show that the molecular conductance depends on the substitution pattern of the DHP motif. The conductance was found to decrease with increasing applied bias.

The title compound, [Fe(C 3 H 7 NO) 6 ][Cd 2 Cl 7 ], crystallizes in the trigonal space group R and is assembled from discrete [Fe(DMF) 6 ] 3+ cations (DMF = N , N -di-methyl-formamide) and [Cd 2 Cl 7 ] 3- anions. In the cation, the iron(III) atom, located on a special position of site symmetry, is coordinated by six oxygen atoms from DMF ligands with all Fe-O distances being equal [2.0072 (16) Å]. A slight distortion of the octa-hedral environment of the metal comes from the cis O-Fe-O angles deviating from the ideal value of 90° [86.85 (7) and 93.16 (7)°] whilst all the trans angles are strictly 180°. The central Cl atom of the [Cd 2 Cl 7 ] 3- anion is also located on a special position of site symmetry and bridges two corner sharing, tetra-hedrally coordinated Cd II atoms. The two Cd atoms and the central Cl atom are colinear. The two sets of terminal chloride ligands on either side of the dumbbell-like anion are rotated relative to each other by 30°. In the crystal, the cations and anions, stacked one above the other along the c -axis direction, are held in place principally by electrostatic inter-actions. There are also C-H⋯Cl and C-H⋯O inter-actions, but these are rather weak. Of the six crystal structures reported to date for ionic salts of [Fe(DMF) 6 ] n + cations ( n = 2, 3), five contain Fe II ions. The title compound is the second example of a stable compound containing the [Fe(DMF) 6 ] 3+ cation. The existence of both [Fe(DMF) 6 ] 2+ and [Fe(DMF) 6 ] 3+ cations shows that the DMF ligand coordination sphere can accommodate changes in the charge and spin states of the metal centre., (© Vassilyeva et al. 2021.)

Three new NiII/ZnII heterometallics, [NiZnL'2(OMe)Cl]2 (1), [NiZnL''(Dea)Cl]2·2DMF (2) and [Ni2(H3L''')2(o-Van)(MeOH)2]Cl·[ZnCl2(H4L''')(MeOH)]·2MeOH (3), containing three-dentate Schiff bases as well as methanol or diethanolamine (H2Dea) or o-vanillin (o-VanH), all deprotonated, as bridging ligands were synthesized and structurally characterized. The Schiff base ligands were produced in situ from o-VanH and CH3NH2 (HL'), or NH2OH (HL"), or 2-amino-2-hydroxymethyl-propane-1,3-diol (H4L'''); a zerovalent metal (Ni and Zn in 1, Zn only in 2 and 3) was employed as a source of metal ions. The first two complexes are dimers with a Ni2Zn2O6 central core, while the third compound is a novel heterometallic cocrystal salt solvate built of a neutral zwitterionic ZnII Schiff base complex and of ionic salt containing dinuclear NiII complex cations. The crystal structures contain either centrosymmetric (1 and 2) or non-symmetric di-nickel fragment (3) with NiNi distances in the range 3.146-3.33 Å. The exchange coupling is antiferromagnetic for 1, J = 7.7 cm-1, and ferromagnetic for 2, J = -6.5 cm-1 (using the exchange Hamiltonian in a form Ĥ = Jŝ1ŝ2). The exchange interactions in 1 and 2 are comparable to the zero-field splitting (ZFS). High-field EPR revealed moderate magnetic anisotropy of opposite signs: D = 2.27 cm-1, E = 0.243 cm-1 (1) and D = -4.491 cm-1, E = -0.684 cm-1 (2). Compound 3 stands alone with very weak ferromagnetism (J = -0.6 cm-1) and much stronger magnetic anisotropy with D = -11.398 cm-1 and E = -1.151 cm-1. Attempts to calculate theoretically the exchange coupling (using the DFT "broken symmetry" method) and ZFS parameters (with the ab initio CASSCF method) were successful in predicting the trends of J and D among the three complexes, while the quantitative results were less good for 1 and 3.

Chiral, cationic NHC-iridium complexes are introduced as catalysts for the intramolecular hydroamination reaction of unactivated aminoalkenes. The catalysts show high activity in the construction of a range of 5- and 6-membered N-heterocycles, which are accessed in excellent optical purity, with various functional groups being tolerated with this system. A major deactivation pathway is presented and eliminated by using alternative reaction conditions. A detailed experimental and computational study on the reaction mechanism is performed providing valuable insights into the mode of action of the catalytic system and pointing to future modifications to be made for this catalytic platform., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Trinuclear lanthanoid clusters have been synthesised and investigated as toroidal spin systems. A pyridyl functionalised β-diketonate, 1,3-bis(pyridin-2-yl)propane-1,3-dione (o-dppdH) has been used to synthesise a family of clusters of the form [Dy3(OH)2(o-dppd)3Cl2(H2O)4]Cl2·7H2O (1), [Tb3(o-dppd)3(μ3-OH)2(CH3CH2OH)3Cl3][Tb3(o-dppd)3(μ3-OH)2(H2O)(CH3CH2OH)2Cl3]Cl2·H2O (2), [Ho3(OH)2(o-dppd)3Cl(H2O)5]Cl3·3H2O (3) and [Er3(OH)2(o-dppd)3Cl2(H2O)3(CH3OH)]Cl2·3H2O·CH3OH (4). Despite the previous occurrence of this structural motif in the literature, these systems have not been widely investigated in terms of torodic behaviour. Magnetic studies were used to further characterise the complexes. DC susceptibility studies support weak antiferromagnetic exchange in the complexes. Slow magnetic relaxation behaviour is observed in the dynamic AC magnetic studies for complex 1. Theoretical studies predict that complex 1 and 3 have a non-magnetic ground state based on a toroidal arrangement of spins. Changes to the coordination environment in 2 do not support a toroic spin state. The prolate nature of the ErIII centres in complex 4 and large transverse anisotropy do not support the toroidal arrangement of lanthanoid spins in the complex.

Reactions of [Ru{C=C(H)-1,4-C 6 H 4 C≡CH}(PPh 3 ) 2 Cp]BF 4 ([1 a]BF 4 ) with hydrohalic acids, HX, results in the formation of [Ru{C≡C-1,4-C 6 H 4 -C(X)=CH 2 }(PPh 3 ) 2 Cp] [X=Cl (2 a-Cl), Br (2 a-Br)], arising from facile Markovnikov addition of halide anions to the putative quinoidal cumulene cation [Ru(=C=C=C 6 H 4 =C=CH 2 )(PPh 3 ) 2 Cp] + . Similarly, [M{C=C(H)-1,4-C 6 H 4 -C≡CH}(LL)Cp ]BF 4 [M(LL)Cp'=Ru(PPh 3 ) 2 Cp ([1 a]BF 4 ); Ru(dppe)Cp* ([1 b]BF 4 ); Fe(dppe)Cp ([1 c]BF 4 ); Fe(dppe)Cp* ([1 d]BF 4 )] react with H + /H 2 O to give the acyl-functionalised phenylacetylide complexes [M{C≡C-1,4-C 6 H 4 -C(=O)CH 3 }(LL)Cp'] (3 a-d) after workup. The Markovnikov addition of the nucleophile to the remote alkyne in the cations [1 a-d] + is difficult to rationalise from the vinylidene form of the precursor and is much more satisfactorily explained from initial isomerisation to the quinoidal cumulene complexes [M(=C=C=C 6 H 4 =C=CH 2 )(LL)Cp'] + prior to attack at the more exposed, remote quaternary carbon. Thus, whilst representative acetylide complexes [Ru(C≡C-1,4-C 6 H 4 -C≡CH)(PPh 3 ) 2 Cp] (4 a) and [Ru(C≡C-1,4-C 6 H 4 -C≡CH)(dppe)Cp*] (4 b) reacted with the relatively small electrophiles [CN] + and [C 7 H 7 ] + at the β-carbon to give the expected vinylidene complexes, the bulky trityl ([CPh 3 ] + ) electrophile reacted with [M(C≡C-1,4-C 6 H 4 -C≡CH)(LL)Cp'] [M(LL)Cp'=Ru(PPh 3 ) 2 Cp (4 a); Ru(dppe)Cp* (4 b); Fe(dppe)Cp (4 c); Fe(dppe)Cp* (4 d)] at the more exposed remote end of the carbon-rich ligand to give the putative quinoidal cumulene complexes [M{C=C=C 6 H 4 =C=C(H)CPh 3 }(LL)Cp'] + , which were isolated as the water adducts [M{C≡C-1,4-C 6 H 4 -C(=O)CH 2 CPh 3 }(LL)Cp'] (6 a-d). Evincing the scope of the formation of such extended cumulenes from ethynyl-substituted arylvinylene precursors, the rather reactive half-sandwich (5-ethynyl-2-thienyl)vinylidene complexes [M{C=C(H)-2,5- c C 4 H 2 S-C≡CH}(LL)Cp']BF 4 ([7 a-d]BF 4 add water readily to give [M{C≡C-2,5- c C 4 H 2 S-C(=O)CH 3 }(LL)Cp'] (8 a-d)]., (© 2020 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Herein, we report a Rh(II)-catalyzed reaction between 1-tosyl-1,2,3-triazoles and halohydrins to provide 2,6-substituted 3,4-dihydro-2 H -1,4-oxazines under basic conditions. The reaction is proposed to undergo a rhodium carbenoid 1,3-insertion into O-H followed by an annulation. The scope includes phenyl or alkenyl C4-substituted triazoles and a range of halohydrins using catalytic Rh 2 Oct 4 and K 2 CO 3 . A synthesis of the antimicrobial natural product (±)-chelonin C is also reported using this novel methodology.

Two previously reported bis-indole alkaloids, echinosulfone A and echinosulfonic acid B, have been isolated for the first time from a Western Australian marine sponge, Crella sp. (order: Poecilosclerida, family: Crellidae). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction of a decomposition product of echinosulfone A prompted our investigation and subsequent structure reassignment of the echinosulfonic acid natural product family, which we report here. The reassignments are supported by analysis of 1D and 2D NMR data, MS fragmentation, and DFT calculations of 13 C NMR shifts.

The etiology of fungal pathogenesis of grains is critical to global food security. The large number of orphan biosynthetic gene clusters uncovered in fungal plant pathogen genome sequencing projects suggests that we have a significant knowledge gap about the secondary metabolite repertoires of these pathogens and their roles in plant pathogenesis. Cytochalasans are a family of natural products of significant interest due to their ability to bind to actin and interfere with cellular processes that involved actin polymerization; however, our understanding of their biosynthesis and biological roles remains incomplete. Here, we identified a putative polyketide synthase-nonribosomal peptide synthetase (PKS-NRPS) gene cluster ( phm ) that was upregulated in the pathogen Parastagonospora nodorum during its infection on wheat. Overexpression of the transcription factor gene phmR encoded in the phm gene cluster resulted in the production of two leucine-derived cytochalasans, phomacins D and E ( 1 and 2 , respectively), and an acetonyl adduct phomacin F. Heterologous expression of the PKS-NRPS gene phmA and the trans -enoyl reductase (ER) gene phmE in Aspergillus nidulans resulted in the production of a novel 2-pyrrolidone precursor prephomacin. Reverse genetics and wheat seedling infection assays showed that Δ phmA mutants exhibited significantly reduced virulence compared to the wild type. We further demonstrated that both 1 and 2 showed potent actin polymerization-inhibitory activities and exhibited potentially monocot-specific antigerminative activities. The findings from this study have advanced our knowledge based on the biosynthesis and biological roles of cytochalasans, the latter of which could have significant implications for our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of fungus-plant interactions.

Bioactive natural products underpin the intriguing pollination strategy used by sexually deceptive orchids. These compounds, which mimic the sex pheromones of the female insect, are emitted in particular blends to lure male insect pollinators of specific species. By combining methods from field biology, analytical chemistry, electrophysiology, crystallography, and organic synthesis, we report that an undescribed β-hydroxylactone, in combination with two specific hydroxymethylpyrazines, act as pollinator attractants in the rare hammer orchid Drakaea micrantha. This discovery represents an unusual case of chemically unrelated compounds being used together as a sexual attractant. Furthermore, this is the first example of the identification of pollinator attractants in an endangered orchid, enabling the use of chemistry in orchid conservation. Together with the more intuitive and commonly recognized conductance mechanisms of charge-hopping and tunneling, quantum-interference (QI) phenomena have been identified as important factors affecting charge transport through molecules. Consequently, establishing simple and flexible molecular-design strategies to understand, control, and exploit QI in molecular junctions poses an exciting challenge. Here we demonstrate that destructive quantum interference (DQI) in meta-substituted phenylene ethylene-type oligomers (m-OPE) can be tuned by changing the position and conformation of methoxy (OMe) substituents at the central phenylene ring. These substituents play the role of molecular-scale taps, which can be switched on or off to control the current flow through a molecule. Our experimental results conclusively verify recently postulated magic-ratio and orbital-product rules, and highlight a novel chemical design strategy for tuning and gating DQI features to create single-molecule devices with desirable electronic functions., (© 2019 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The synthesis of a novel Rh(i)-aryl complex is detailed and its ability to serve as an initiator in the stereospecific polymerisation of phenylacetylene evaluated. Targeting the Rh(i) species, (2-phenylnaphthalen-1-yl)rhodium(i)(2,5-norbornadiene)tris(para-fluorophenylphosphine), Rh(nbd)(P(4-FC 6 H 4 ) 3 )(2-PhNapth), following recrystallization we obtained the isomeric (2-(naphthalen-2-yl)phenyl)rhodium(i) complex, Rh(nbd)(P(4-FC 6 H 4 ) 3 )(2-NapthPh), as determined by X-ray single-crystal structure analysis, and confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction. The isolation of the latter species was proposed to occur from the target (2-PhNapth) derivative via an intramolecular 1,4-Rh atom migration. This supposition was supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations that indicated the isolated (2-NapthPh) derivative has lower energy (-19 kJ mol -1 ) than the targeted complex. The structure of the isolated (2-NapthPh) species was confirmed by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy including 2D 31 P- 103 Rh{ 1 H, 103 Rh}, heteronuclear multiple-quantum correlation (HMQC) experiments; however, NMR analysis indicated the presence of a second, minor species in solution in an approximate 1 : 4 ratio with the 2-NapthPh complex. The minor species was identified as a second structural isomer, the 3-phenylnaphthyl derivative, proposed to be formed under a dynamic equilibrium with the 2-NapthPh derivative via a second 1,4-Rh atom migration. DFT calculations indicate that this 1,4-migration proceeds through a low-energy pathway involved in the oxidative addition of a C-H bond to Rh followed by a reductive elimination with the distribution of the products being thermodynamically controlled. The recrystallized Rh(nbd)(P(4-FC 6 H 4 ) 3 )(2-NapthPh) complex was subsequently evaluated as an initiator in the polymerisation of phenylacetylene (PA); gratifyingly, the Rh(i) species was an active initiating species with the pseudo-first-order kinetic and molecular weight evolution vs time plots both linear implying a controlled polymerisation while yielding (co)polymers with low dispersities (Đ = M w /M n typically ≤1.25) and high cis-transoidal stereoregularity (>95%). Typical initiation efficiencies, while not quantitative (as judged by size exclusion chromatography), were nonetheless high at ca. 0.8. The presence of the minor 3-phenylnaphthyl species when in solution is proposed to be the cause of the observed non-quantitative initiation.

The synthesis, structural and photophysical characterisation of four tricarbonyl rhenium(i) complexes bound to 1,10-phenanthroline and a tetrazolato ancillary ligand are reported. The complexes are differentiated by the nature (hydroxy or methoxy) and position (meta or para) of the substituent attached to the phenyl ring in conjugation to the tetrazole ring. The complexes exhibit phosphorescence emission from triplet charge transfer excited states, with the maxima around 600 nm, excited state lifetime decays in the 200-300 ns range, and quantum yield values of 4-6% in degassed acetonitrile solutions. The nature and position of the substituent does not significantly affect the photophysical properties, which remain unchanged even after deprotonation of the hydroxide group on the phenol ring. The interpretation of the photophysical data was further validated by resonance Raman spectroscopy and time-dependent density functional theory calculations. All the complexes are internalised within cells, albeit to variable degrees. As highlighted by a combination of flow cytometry and confocal microscopy, the species display diffuse cytoplasmic localisation except for the complex with the hydroxy functional group at the para position, which reveals lower accumulation in cells and more pronounced punctate staining. Overall, the complexes displayed low levels of cytotoxicity.

Developing molecular circuits that can function as the active components in electrical devices is an ongoing challenge in molecular electronics. It demands mechanical stability of the single-molecule circuit while simultaneously being responsive to external stimuli mimicking the operation of conventional electronic components. Here, we report single-molecule circuits based on spiropyran derivatives that respond electrically to chemical and mechanical stimuli. The merocyanine that results from the protonation/ring-opening of the spiropyran form showed single-molecule diode characteristics, with an average current rectification ratio of 5 at ±1 V, favoring the orientation where the positively charged end of the molecule is attached to the negative terminal of the circuit. Mechanical pulling of a single spiropyran molecule drives a switch to a more conducting merocyanine state. The mechanical switching is enabled by the strong Au-C covalent bonding between the molecule and the electrodes, which allows the tensile force delivered by the STM piezo to break the molecule at its spiropyran C-O bond.

The observation of an unusual crystal habit in the common diuretic drug hydrochlorothiazide (HCT), and identification of its subtle conformational chirality, has stimulated a detailed investigation of its crystalline forms. Enantiomeric conformers of HCT resolve into an unusual structure of conjoined enantiomorphic twin crystals comprising enantiopure domains of opposite chirality. The purity of the domains and the chiral molecular conformation are confirmed by spatially revolved synchrotron micro-XRD experiments and neutron diffraction, respectively. Macroscopic inversion twin symmetry observed between the crystal wings suggests a pseudoracemic structure that is not a solid solution or a layered crystal structure, but an unusual structural variant of conglomerates and racemic twins. Computed interaction energies for molecular pairs in the racemic and enantiopure polymorphs of HCT, and the observation of large opposing unit-cell dipole moments for the enantiopure domains in these twin crystals, suggest a plausible crystal nucleation mechanism for this unusual crystal habit., (© 2019 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The first approaches to the 10'-anthronyl-2-anthraquinone skeleton have been devised, allowing two syntheses of the marine natural product albopunctatone. Both routes involve regioselective addition of a nucleophilic masked anthraquinone to a protected chrysazin derivative; the best affords albopunctatone in five steps and 35% overall yield. Albopunctatone exhibits potent inhibitory activity against Plasmodium falciparum and negligible toxicity to a range of other microbial pathogens and mammalian cells.

The monocation product of the oxidative condensation-cyclization between two mol-ecules of pyridine-2-carbaldehyde and one mol-ecule of CH 3 NH 2 ·HCl in methanol, 2-methyl-3-(pyridin-2-yl)imidazo[1,5- a ]pyridinium, was isolated in the presence of metal ions as bis-[2-methyl-3-(pyridin-2-yl)imidazo[1,5- a ]pyridin-2-ium] tetra-iodo-cadmate, (C 13 H 12 N 3 ) 2 [CdI 4 ], (I), and the mixed chloride/nitrate salt, bis-[2-methyl-3-(pyridin-2-yl)imidazo[1,5- a ]pyridin-2-ium] 1.5-chlor-ide 0.5-nitrate trihydrate, 2C 13 H 12 N 3 + ·1.5Cl - ·0.5NO 3 - ·3H 2 O, (II). Hybrid salt (I) crystallizes in the space group P 2 1 / n with two [ L ] 2 [CdI 4 ] mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit related by pseudosymmetry. In the crystal of (I), layers of organic cations and of tetra-halometallate anions are stacked parallel to the ab plane. Anti-parallel L + cations disposed in a herring-bone pattern form π-bonded chains through aromatic stacking. In the inorganic layer, adjacent tetra-hedral CdI 4 units have no connectivity but demonstrate close packing of iodide anions. In the crystal lattice of (II), the cations are arranged in stacks propagating along the a axis; the one-dimensional hydrogen-bonded polymer built of chloride ions and water mol-ecules runs parallel to a column of stacked cations.

Class II mixed-valence bimetallic complexes {[Cp'(PP)M]C≡C-C≡N[M'(PP)'Cp']} 2+ (M, M'=Ru, Fe; PP=dppe, (PPh 3 ) 2 ; Cp'=Cp*, Cp) exist as conformational ensembles in fluid solution, with a population of structures ranging from cis- to trans-like geometries. Each conformer gives rise to its own series of low-energy intervalence charge-transfer (IVCT) and local d-d transitions, which overlap in the NIR region, giving complex band envelopes in the NIR absorption spectrum, which prevent any meaningful attempt at analysis of the band shape. However, DFT and time-dependent (TD)DFT calculations with dispersion-corrected global-hybrid (BLYP35-D3) or local hybrid (lh-SsirPW92-D3) functionals on a small number of optimised structures chosen to sample the ground state potential energy hypersurfaces of each of these complexes has proven sufficient to explain the major features of the electronic spectra. Although modest in terms of computational expense, this approach provides a more accurate description of the underlying molecular electronic structure than would be possible through analysis of the IVCT band by using the static point-charge model of Marcus-Hush theory and derivatives, or TDDFT calculations from a single (global) minimum energy geometry., (© 2019 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A novel class of spiroimidazolidine-2',4'-diones substituted with aryl sulfonyl group at different positions was designed and synthesized. The target compounds were evaluated for their potential to release insulin from MIN6 cell line derived from in-vivo immortalized insulin-secreting pancreatic cells. The MIN6 cells represent an important model of beta cells, which as passage numbers increases, lose the first phase but retain partial second phase glucose stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS), similar to patients in early type 2 diabetes onset. Some of the compounds exhibited high potency. Compound 2d and 3f exhibited excellent insulin release activity from MIN6 cells when compared with standard drug, tolbutamide. Some of these compounds had a potent inhibitory activity for human recombinant aldose reductase (ALR2), an enzyme which converts glucose into sorbitol and plays a key role in development of complications arising from diabetes, such as retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy and cataract formation. Against human recombinant ALR2, compounds 2a, 3a-d, and 3f-h displayed effective inhibition activities. The results were augmented by the ability of the compounds to prevent sorbitol accumulation in the isolated rat lenses, sciatic nerves and erythrocytes. Some of the compounds were found to possess excellent dual activity, hence they may be promising candidates to modify and evaluate their dual action, i.e., insulin release to combat diabetes and ALR2 inhibition to prevent/treat diabetic complications. The compounds were also found to possess good antioxidant efficacy. Several trinuclear ferrocenes are obtained by Friedel-Crafts reaction of octamethylferrocene with ferrocenoyl chloride and subsequent modifications. 1,1'-Diferrocenoyloctamethylferrocene (3) is transformed to the divinyl derivative (4a) by reaction with MeLi and AlCl 3 . The reactive 4a cyclizes spontaneously to a [4]ferrocenophane with buta-1,3-diene handle (5) or in the presence of AlCl 3 to a [3]ferrocenophane with propene handle (6). Structure assignments are supported by X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy, and mechanisms are proposed. Electrochemical behavior of the compounds was investigated with cyclic voltammetry, and assignments of the redox processes were carried out with the aid of density functional theory calculations. The synthesized compounds and demonstrated transformations represent useful tools for preparation of materials for charge-transport studies in metal-molecule-metal junctions.

A conjugated β-triketone, tris(2-naphthoyl)methane (tnmH), has been synthesized and successfully utilized as an antenna moiety for sensitization of the trivalent lanthanoids Eu3+, Sm3+, Yb3+ and Nd3+, in an isomorphous series of mononuclear complexes formulated as [Ln(tnm)3(DMSO)2] (Ln3+ = Nd3+, Sm3+, Eu3+, Gd3+ and Yb3+). The photophysical properties of the materials were characterized as comprehensively as possible, with overall quantum yields, intrinsic quantum yields based on calculated radiative decays, and sensitization efficiencies reported. This investigation improves understanding of the sensitization processes occurring in the near-infrared (NIR) region, where quantitative data are currently scarce. In fact, the [Yb(tnm)3(DMSO)2] and its deuterated analogue, [Yb(tnm)3(d6-DMSO)2], present high values of overall quantum yield of 4% and 6%, respectively, which makes them useful and readily accessible references for future investigation of NIR-emitting systems.

β-Triketonates have been recently used as chelating ligands for lanthanoid ions, presenting unique structures varying from polynuclear assemblies to polymers. In an effort to overcome low solubility of the complexes of tribenzoylmethane, four β-triketones with higher lipophilicity were synthesised. Complexation reactions were performed for each of these molecules using different alkaline bases in alcoholic media. X-ray diffraction studies suggested that the ligands were undergoing decomposition under the reaction conditions. This is proposed to be caused by in situ retro-Claisen condensation reactions, consistent with two examples that have been reported previously. The lability of the lanthanoid cations in the presence of a varying set of potential ligands gave rise to structures where one, two, or three of the molecules involved in the retro-Claisen condensation reaction were linked to the lanthanoid centres. These results, along with measurements of ligand decomposition in the presence of base alone, suggest the solvent used will modulate the impact of the retro-Claisen condensation in these complexes.

We report on the assembly of three-fold axially compressed icosahedral arrays of the bowl shaped p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene molecules in the solid-state, intricately bound to dipicolinate and yttrium(iii) ions, with the compression reflected in Hirshfeld surface analyses. Solution studies show dissolution of the icosahedra intact, but with a geometrical rearrangement to regular icosahedra.

Isomorphous β-triketonate-based lanthanoid polymers containing tris(4-methylbenzoyl)methanide (mtbm) and Rb+ with formula {[Ln(Rb)(mtbm)4]2}n (Ln = Eu3+ and Nd3+) have been synthesised and structurally characterised. The photophysical properties for the Nd3+ complex presented relatively long lifetimes and high quantum yields in comparison with analogous β-diketonate complexes. Mixed lanthanoid complexes were also formed and their luminescence properties studied, with effective sensitisation of the 4F3/2 of Nd3+via the 5D0 of Eu3+, which is to the best of our knowledge the first example of Eu3+ to Nd3+ sensitisation in a structurally defined coordination complex or polymer.

A novel chiral disulfoxide ligand pair bearing fluorine atoms at the 6 and 6' position of its atropisomeric backbone, ( M, S, S)- and ( P, S, S)- p-Tol-6F-BIPHESO, was synthesized. Complexation to a rhodium(I) precursor gave rise to μ-Cl- and μ-OH-bridged rhodium dimer complexes incorporating the new ( M, S, S)- p-Tol-6F-BIPHESO ligand, while its sibling ( P, S, S)- p-Tol-6F-BIPHESO was not complexed efficiently to the rhodium precursor. The performance of this disulfoxide ligand [( M, S, S)- p-Tol-6F-BIPHESO] in catalysis was tested in both 1,4- and 1,2-addition reactions of arylboronic acids. We show that addition to both cyclic and acyclic enones as well as N-tosylarylimines proceeds with high yields and high enantioselectivities to give the corresponding products. The synthesis of enantiomerically pure p-Tol-6F-BIPHESO is straightforward and inexpensive which, together with the high catalytic performance and wide substrate scope for these addition reactions, makes it a very attractive alternative to more classical chiral ligand entities.

An isomorphous series of lanthanoid complexes containing tribenzoylmethanide (tbm) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) ligands has been synthesised and structurally characterised. These complexes, formulated as [Ln(phen)(tbm)3] (Ln = Eu3+, Er3+ and Yb3+), were compared with analogous dibenzoylmethanide (dbm) [Ln(phen)(dbm)3] complexes to investigate the effect of changing β-diketonate to β-triketonate ligands on the photophysical properties of the complex. The photophysical properties for the Eu3+ complexes were similar for both systems, whereas a modest enhancement was observed for Yb3+ and Er3+ moving from the dbm to the tbm complexes. A detailed study of the NIR photophysical properties was achieved by adapting the integrating sphere method for the calculation of overall quantum yields in the solid state.

This paper describes the facile synthesis of a number of electron rich octamethyl[1.4]ferrocenophanes with unsaturated handles from 1,1'-bis(1-chlorovinyl)octamethylferrocene. Treatment of this reactive compound with sodium hydroxide in DMF initiates a series of reactions resulting in the formation of four different ferrocenophanes. The most complex of these products arises from a cascade of cyclisations giving an unusual, unsymmetrical bis-ferrocenophane with a central fused cyclobutene. Control over the reaction outcome is achieved by manipulating the concentration of NaOH. Mechanisms are proposed, and supported by DFT calculations.

The reaction of the β-triketonate ligands tris(4-methylbenzoyl)methanide and tribenzoylmethanide with the trivalent lanthanoids Eu 3+ , Er 3+ , and Yb 3+ in the presence of Cs + afforded polymeric structures where the repeating units are represented by bimetallic tetranuclear assemblies of formulation {[Ln(Cs)(β-triketonate) 4 ] 2 } n . The only exception is the structure formed by the reaction of tris(4-methylbenzoyl)methanide, Yb 3+ , and Cs + , which yielded a polymeric assembly where the repeating units are mononuclear Yb 3+ complexes bridged by Cs + cations. Photophysical measurements on the obtained materials confirmed efficient sensitization from the ligand excited states to the 4f* excited states of the three lanthanoids. According to transient absorption data, Er 3+ and Yb 3+ are sensitized via energy transfer from the triplet state of the β-triketonate ligands. On the other hand, energy transfer to Eu 3+ seems to occur via an alternative pathway, possibly directly via the singlet state or through ligand to metal charge transfer states. The emission measurements confirm efficient sensitization for all three lanthanoids and bright near-infrared emission for Er 3+ and Yb 3+ , a characteristic that seems to be linked to the specific chemical structure of the β-triketonate ligands.

Metal complexes are receiving increased attention as molecular wires in fundamental studies of the transport properties of metal|molecule|metal junctions. In this context we report the single-molecule conductance of a systematic series of d 8 square-planar platinum(ii) trans-bis(alkynyl) complexes with terminal trimethylsilylethynyl (C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CSiMe 3 ) contacting groups, e.g. trans-Pt{C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CC 6 H 4 C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CSiMe 3 } 2 (PR 3 ) 2 (R = Ph or Et), using a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments in solution and theoretical calculations using density functional theory and non-equilibrium Green's function formalism. The measured conductance values of the complexes (ca. 3-5 × 10 -5 G 0 ) are commensurate with similarly structured all-organic oligo(phenylene ethynylene) and oligo(yne) compounds. Based on conductance and break-off distance data, we demonstrate that a PPh 3 supporting ligand in the platinum complexes can provide an alternative contact point for the STM tip in the molecular junctions, orthogonal to the terminal C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CSiMe 3 group. The attachment of hexyloxy side chains to the diethynylbenzene ligands, e.g. trans-Pt{C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CC 6 H 2 (Ohex) 2 C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CSiMe 3 } 2 (PPh 3 ) 2 (Ohex = OC 6 H 13 ), hinders contact of the STM tip to the PPh 3 groups and effectively insulates the molecule, allowing the conductance through the full length of the backbone to be reliably measured. The use of trialkylphosphine (PEt 3 ), rather than triarylphosphine (PPh 3 ), ancillary ligands at platinum also eliminates these orthogonal contacts. These results have significant implications for the future design of organometallic complexes for studies in molecular junctions.

Two new N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands bearing 2-morpholino and 2-piperidinyl naphthyl wingtips were synthesised (2-SIMorNap and 2-SIPipNap). Nuclear magnetic resonance studies, in conjunction with crystal structures and derivatisation of the NHC salts using a chiral counteranion, revealed that the ligand wingtips are oriented anti with respect to each other. From the free carbene, palladium, ruthenium and iridium complexes were prepared. NHC-iridium dicarbonyl complexes were made in order to extract the TEP values for these ligands. The study showed that these NHC ligands are more electron-donating than normal, aryl-substituted NHCs. The palladium complexes were tested in representative Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions and compared to the state of the art systems. Ruthenium-catalysed ring-closing metathesis with these ligands was also performed. It was found that Grubbs' 2 nd generation catalyst incorporating 2-SIPipNap did not initiate at room temperature and required heating for RCM to occur.

The reaction of hydrated lanthanoid chlorides with tribenzoylmethane and an alkali metal hydroxide consistently resulted in the crystallization of neutral tetranuclear assemblies with the general formula [Ln(Ae⋅HOEt)(L)4 ]2 (Ln=Eu(3+) , Er(3+) , Yb(3+) ; Ae=Na(+) , K(+) , Rb(+) ). Analysis of the crystal structures of these species revealed a coordination geometry that varied from a slightly distorted square antiprism to a slightly distorted triangular dodecahedron, with the specific geometrical shape being dependent on the degree of lattice solvation and identity of the alkali metal. The near-infrared (NIR)-emitting assemblies of Yb(3+) and Er(3+) showed remarkably efficient emission, characterized by significantly longer excited-state lifetimes (τobs ≈37-47 μs for Yb(3+) and τobs ≈4-6 μs for Er(3+) ) when compared with the broader family of lanthanoid β-diketonate species, even in the case of perfluorination of the ligands. The Eu(3+) assemblies show bright red emission and a luminescence performance (τobs ≈0.5 ms, ${{\Phi}{{{\rm L}\hfill \atop {\rm Ln}\hfill}}}$≈35-37 %, ηsens ≈68-70 %) more akin to the β-diketonate species. The results highlight that the β-triketonate ligand offers a tunable and facile system for the preparation of efficient NIR emitters without the need for more complicated perfluorination or deuteration synthetic strategies., (© 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Large metal-oxo clusters consistently assume spherical or regular polyhedral morphologies rather than high-aspect-ratio structures. Access to elongated core structures has now been achieved by the reaction of lanthanoid salts with a tetrazole-functionalized calixarene in the presence of a simple carboxylate co-ligand. The resulting Ln19 and Ln12 clusters are constructed from apex-fused Ln5O6 trigonal bipyramids and are formed consistently under a range of reaction conditions and reagent ratios. Altering the carboxylate co-ligand structure reliably controls the cluster length, giving access to a new class of rod-like clusters of variable length.

[RuCl(arene)(μ-Cl)]2 dimers were treated in a 1:2 molar ratio with sodium or thallium salts of bis- and tris(pyrazolyl)borate ligands [Na(Bp(Br3))], [Tl(Tp(Br3))], and [Tl(Tp(iPr, 4Br))]. Mononuclear neutral complexes [RuCl(arene)(κ(2)-Bp(Br3))] (1: arene=p-cymene (cym); 2: arene=hexamethylbenzene (hmb); 3: arene=benzene (bz)), [RuCl(arene)(κ(2)-Tp(Br3))] (4: arene=cym; 6: arene=bz), and [RuCl(arene)(κ(2)-Tp(iPr, 4Br))] (7: arene=cym, 8: arene=hmb, 9: arene=bz) have been always obtained with the exception of the ionic [Ru2 (hmb)2-(μ-Cl)3][Tp(Br3)] (5'), which formed independently of the ratio of reactants and reaction conditions employed. The ionic [Ru-(CH3OH)(cym)(κ(2)-Bp(Br3))][X] (10: X=PF6, 12: X=O3SCF3) and the neutral [Ru(O2CCF3)(cym)(κ(2)-Bp(Br3))] (11) have been obtained by a metathesis reaction with corresponding silver salts. All complexes 1-12 have been characterized by analytical and spectroscopic data (IR, ESI-MS, (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy). The structures of the thallium and calcium derivatives of ligand Tp(Br3), [Tl(Tp(Br3))] and [Ca(dmso)6][Tp(Br3)]2 ⋅2 DMSO, of the complexes 1, 4, 5', 6, 11, and of the decomposition product [RuCl(cym)(Hpz(iPr, 4Br))2][Cl] (7') have been confirmed by using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Electrochemical studies showed that 1-9 and 11 undergo a single-electron Ru(II) →Ru(III) oxidation at a potential, measured by cyclic voltammetry, which allows comparison of the electron-donor characters of the bis- and tris(pyrazol-1-yl)borate and arene ligands, and to estimate, for the first time, the values of the Lever EL ligand parameter for Bp(Br3), Tp(Br3), and Tp(iPr, 4Br). Theoretical calculations at the DFT level indicated that both oxidation and reduction of the Ru complexes under study are mostly metal-centered with some involvement of the chloride ligand in the former case, and also demonstrated that the experimental isolation of the μ(3)-binuclear complex 5' (instead of the mononuclear 5) is accounted for by the low thermodynamic stability of the latter species due to steric reasons., (© 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Adducts of a number of tertiary pnicogen ligands ER(3) (triphenyl-phosphine and -arsine (PPh(3),AsPh(3)), diphenyl,2-pyridylphosphine (PPh(2)py), tris(4-fluorophenyl)phosphine (P(C(6)H(4)-4F)(3)), tris(2-tolyl)phosphine (P(o-tol)(3)), tris(cyclohexyl)phosphine (PCy(3))), with silver(I) thiocyanate, AgSCN are structurally and spectroscopically characterized. The 1:3 AgSCN : ER(3) complexes structurally defined (for PPh(3),AsPh(3) (diversely solvated)) take the form [(R(3)E)(3)AgX], the thiocyanate X = NCS being N-bound, thus [(Ph(3)E)Ag(NCS)]. A 1:2 complex with PPh(2)py, takes the binuclear form [(pyPh(2)P)(2)Ag()Ag(PPh(2)py)(2)] with an eight-membered cyclic core. 1:1 complexes are defined with PPh(2)py, P(o-tol)(3) and PCy(3); binuclear forms [(R(3)P)Ag()Ag(PR(3))] are obtained with P(o-tol)(3) (two polymorphs), while novel isomeric tetranuclear forms, which may be envisaged as dimers of dimers, are obtained with PPh(2)py, and, as further polymorphs, with PCy(3); these latter may be considered as extensions of the 'cubane' and 'step' forms previously described for [(R(3)E)AgX](4) (X = halide) complexes. Solvent-assisted mechanochemical or solvent-assisted solid-state synthesis methods were employed in some cases, where complexes could not be obtained by conventional solution methods, or where such methods yielded a mixture of polymorphs unsuitable for solid-state spectroscopy. The wavenumbers of the ν(CN) bands in the IR spectra are in broad agreement with the empirical rule that distinguishes bridging from terminal bonding, but exceptions occur for compounds that have a double SCN bridged dimeric structure, and replacement of PPh(3) with PPh(2)py apparently causes a significant decrease in ν(CN) to well below the range expected for bridging SCN in these structures. (31)P CP MAS NMR spectra yield additional parameters that allow a correlation between the structures and spectra.

Reaction of imidazole aldehydes with dihydrazino derivatives of 2-phenylpyrimidine provides a family of bis(acylhydrazone) ligands which form [2 × 2] metallogrid complexes with transition metal ions including Fe(II), Co(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II). The free ligands show H-bonding interactions, both donor and acceptor, largely involving the imidazole units, while binding of the metal ions occupies all the acceptor sites and leaves only the pyrrolic-NH site as an H-bond donor, although its deprotonation by a strong base can regenerate an acceptor. These H-bonding interactions have been studied by (1)H NMR spectroscopy in solution and in the solid state by means of several crystal structure determinations. The Fe(II) grids appear to be exclusively high-spin species over a wide temperature range in solution. In the solid state various forms of spin-crossover behaviour can be observed between 1.8 and 300 K, which has been rationalised in terms of the varied forms of hydrogen-bonding possible in the crystalline state.

Karrikinolide is a naturally derived potent seed germination stimulant that is responsible for triggering the germination of numerous plant species from various habitats around the world. We now report that solar irradiation of karrikinolide yields two novel head-to-head cage photodimers with the formation, stability and bioactivity of both presented herein.

An unsymmetrical bis(tridentate) ligand LH in which one binding site can be readily deprotonated forms a kinetically inert [Co(III)L(2)](+) complex which can be used as a "corner" species for the "Coupe du Roi" assembly of trans,trans-[Co(2)M(2)L(4)](6+) metallogrids (M = Fe(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Zn(II)). In the mixed Co(III)/Co(II) species, the oxidation states appear to be localised. In solution, the ligand LH forms octacationic, homometallic [2 × 2] grids with the individual labile metal ions Fe(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), seemingly as mixtures of all possible isomers arising from the unsymmetrical nature of the ligand. In the solid state, however, [Zn(4)L(4)](CF(3)SO(3))(8)·4CH(3)CN crystallises as a single species where the cation has S(4) symmetry. This stereoselectivity in the crystalline lattice is associated with interactions between the cation and triflate anions which can again be analysed in terms of the Coupe du Roi concept.

Co(III) sarcophagine-type cage molecules, [Co(diCLsar)](3+) or [Co(HONOsar)](3+), form either 1 : 1 or 1 : 2 host-guest inclusion complexes with mono-phosphonium cations and sodium p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene in the solid state yielding complex I [p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene·Co(diCLsar)·2{benzyltriphenylphosphonium}], complex II [2{p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene}·Co(diCLsar)·3{tetraphenylphosphonium}] and complex III [p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene·Co(HONOsar)·tetraphenylphosphonium]. The diversity of the structural types of these multi-component systems, including the orientation of the Co(III) molecules in the cavities of the calixarenes, depends on the nature of their terminal functional groups. The secondary coordination interactions binding between the Co(III) molecules and p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene have also been investigated in water using NMR techniques.

Hirshfeld surface analysis of the 'ordered' inner phase of the molecular capsule complex, [(chloroform)(6)@C-n-butylpyrogallol[4]arene)(6)], provides insight into the intermolecular contacts and orientation of the solvent molecules. Molecular simulations show that adding two or three hydrogen molecules to the six solvent molecules is energetically favoured, and this correlates with NMR studies.

The title compound undergoes two order-disorder transitions between 15 and 299 K, dictated by ordering of the guest molecules in the host cages, and resulting in three related crystal structures. We anticipate behaviour of this kind to be widespread, and speculate that the concept of "the crystal structure" for individual Dianin's clathrates may be elusive.

Hexamethoxy-calix[6]arene has been fully functionalized with p-phosphonic acid groups on the upper rim in 57% yield over three steps, and has been authenticated in the solid state by X-ray diffraction as either a nitrate salt or one of two calcium complexes. The latter differ by the ratio of calcium ions per calixarene, either 3:1 or 4:1. In both structures the coordination sphere of the calcium ions is made up of oxygen atoms from the phosphonic acid groups and from water of crystallization, as part of extended polymeric layers in the extended 3D packing. Hirshfeld surface analysis shows extensive O...H and O...Ca interactions for the phosphonic acid moieties in both calcium structures. MALDI-TOF MS of the hexaphosphonic acid shows nano-arrays consisting of up to a maximum of 28 calixarene units.

Addition of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium (C(n)-mim) cations 3-5 to a mixture of bis-phosphonium cation 2 and sodium p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene (1) in the presence of lanthanide ions results in the selective binding of an imidazolium cation into the cavity of the calixarene. The result is a multi-layered solid material with an inherently flexible interplay of the components. Incorporating ethyl-, n-butyl- or n-hexyl-mim cations into the multi-layers results in significant perturbation of the structure, the most striking effect is the tilting of the plane of the bowl-shaped calixarene relative to the plane of the multi-layer, with tilt angles of 7.2, 28.9 and 65.5 degrees , respectively. The lanthanide ions facilitate complexation, but are not incorporated into the structures and, in all cases, the calixarene takes on a 5- charge, with one of the lower-rim phenolic groups deprotonated. ROESY NMR experiments and other (1)H NMR spectroscopy studies establish the formation of 1:1 supermolecules of C(n)-mim and calixarene, regardless of the ratio of the two components, and indicate that the supermolecules undergo rapid exchange on the NMR spectroscopy timescale.

In extension of recent synthetic and crystallographic studies of adducts of silver(I) oxyanion salts with uni- and bi-dentate nitrogen-donor ligands, AgX : L (1 : n), a parallel series of complexes formed with silver(I) trifluoromethanesulfonate ('tfs', 'triflate') has been similarly defined, showing rather more divergence from tendencies established with the previous ClO(4), NO(3), F(3)CCO(2) core arrays than might be expected from basicity arguments. Thus, while silver triflate crystallised from neat base forms 1 : 2 mononuclear adducts with 2,4,6-trimethylpyridine and quinoline which comprise essentially linear two-coordinate [LAgL](+) cations, perturbed by approaches of the anions, 1 : 2 adducts obtained similarly from pyridine and 2-methylpyridine are [L(2)Ag(mu-tfs)(2)AgL(2)] dimers, with central four- and eight-membered rings arising from mu-OSO(2)CF(3) and extended mu-(O,O'SOCF(3)) anion bridging modes, respectively. With piperidine, a single-stranded polymer reminiscent of the arrays [(pip)(2)AgX](infinity/infinity), X = Cl, NCS, is formed, the triflate bridging through two of its oxygen atoms, rather than via a single atom bridge. With 2- and 4-cyanopyridine, the former a 1 : 1 adduct (being an acetonitrile solvate (MeCN coordinated)), and the latter 1 : 2, both are more complex structures in which the nitrile functionalities now coordinate weakly. The 1 : 2 adduct with 2-acetylpyridine parallels its perchlorate analogue, the ligands being bidentate in a mononuclear complex [L(2)AgOSO(2)CF(3)], while adducts of 2,9-dimethylphenanthroline and 2,2'-biquinolyl, both acetonitrile monosolvates, take the form [LAg(NCMe)]tfs. Agtfs : dpk (8 : 8)(infinity/infinity).EtOH ('dpk' = bis(2-pyridyl)ketone) is a complex polymer. The nature of the interactions is explored by way of spectroscopy (IR, NMR and ESI MS) and a density functional theory approach.

Lower rim O-methyl, -n-butyl, and n-octadecyl calix[4]arenes bearing p-phosphonic acid groups on the upper rim have been prepared in high yield, compounds 12-14. Where possible the compounds have been characterized in the solid state using X-ray diffraction, or as the precursor phosphate esters or a cesium salt. The cone conformation ethyl phosphate ester for the octadecyl compound crystallizes in a bi-layer 39.1 A thick which approaches the 40 A of biological membranes. The 1,3-alternate cone conformation of the cesium salt of the O-methyl phosphonic acid has a metal ion coordinated to two methoxy groups, four O-P (two from neighboring calixarenes), and two eta(3)-C(3) moieties from two 1,3-disposed aromatic rings. MALDI-TOF spectra of compounds 12-14 show successive peaks corresponding to 15, 33 and 16 calixarene units, which is consistent with the intra-molecular H-bonding capabilities of the di-protic phosphonic acid groups where the calixarenes are arranged into layers, including bilayers.
