The AZFc partial deletions of Y chromosome and lifestyle/epidemiological factors such as the use of smokeless chewing tobacco (SCT) exhibit intriguing variations in their association with male infertility across the population, ethnicity, and genetic background. Here, a pioneering attempt has been made to elucidate the interactions of such deletions with the habits of SCT consumption among the participating individuals, using their large epidemiological data. This screening program was conducted among Bengali-speaking men in West Bengal, India. We screened the prevalence and association of distinct partial deletions (gr/gr, b1/b3, and b2/b3) of the AZFc region using locus-specific sequence-tagged site (STS) markers among 728 case subjects and compared them with 264 ethnicity- and age-matched proven-fertile control men. The recorded epidemiological data of the study group and the outcome of partial deletion analysis were compiled to frame the plausible Gene × Epidemiological factor (G × E) interactions. The gr/gr deletion was reported to be significantly associated with azoospermic ( p  = .0015, odds ratio [OR] = 3.413) and oligozoospermic ( p  = .0382, OR = 3.012) case subgroups, and b1/b3 deletions were also detected among the infertile persons only. The G × E model revealed that men who carried microdeletions as well as were SCT users had an elevated risk of infertility ( p  = .002, OR = 6.38). The study highlights the fact that AZFc partial deletions and SCT, when co-occurred, synergistically increase the risk of infertility among men. Background: Most mammalian cells harbor molecular circadian clocks that synchronize physiological functions with the 24-h day-night cycle. Disruption of circadian rhythms, through genetic or environmental changes, promotes the development of disorders like obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. At the cellular level, circadian, mitotic, and redox cycles are functionally coupled. Evernic (EA) and usnic acid (UA), two lichen secondary metabolites, show various pharmacological activities including anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective action. All these effects have likewise been associated with a functional circadian clock., Hypothesis/purpose: To test, if the lichen compounds EA and UA modulate circadian clock function at the cellular level., Methods: We used three different cell lines and two circadian luminescence reporter systems for evaluating dose- and time-dependent effects of EA/UA treatment on cellular clock regulation at high temporal resolution. Output parameters studied were circadian luminescence rhythm period, amplitude, phase, and dampening rate., Results: Both compounds had marked effects on clock rhythm amplitudes and dampening independent of cell type, with UA generally showing a higher efficiency than EA. Only in fibroblast cells, significant effects on clock period were observed for UA treated cells showing shorter and EA treated cells showing longer period lengths. Background: Prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and vitamin D deficiency was reported among postmenopausal women (PMW) in India. However, no report is available regarding the association of MS and 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] among PMW in India. This study aimed to find out the prevalence of MS and 25(OH)D status as well as their association among rural PMW of West Bengal, India., Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 222 randomly selected rural PMW in Singur Block, West Bengal, India. Serum 25(OH)D, Blood pressure (BP), waist circumference (WC), fasting blood glucose (FBG), triglycerides (TG) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were measured using standard procedures. MS was defined as per International Diabetes Federation, 2005 (for Asian-Indians) criteria. Statistical tests were done using SPSS software., Results: Prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 46%. 51% and 19% PMW were vitamin D insufficient and deficient, respectively. 22% and 53% women having MS were vitamin D insufficient and deficient, respectively. Among the PMW, 21% and 47% with WC≥80cm; 22% and 62% with FBG≥110mg/dl; 21% and 54% with TG≥150mg/dl; 23% and 51% with HDL-C<50mg/dl, 15% and 55% with BP≥130/85mm of Hg were vitamin D insufficient and deficient, respectively. Significant statistical association between FBG and 25(OH)D status existed (p = 0.01). Significant positive correlation between WC and 25(OH)D level (p = 0.004) and significant negative correlation between FBG and 25(OH)D level observed (p = 0.02). WC was the only statistically significant predictor of the dependent variable. Odds of non-sufficient 25(OH)D level increased with decrease in WC., Conclusion: High prevalence of MS as well as vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency existed among PMW of Singur block, West Bengal, India. 25(OH)D had significant inverse and direct relationship with FBG and WC. Low 25(OH)D may be one of the potential risk factors for developing MS in PMW or vice-versa.
