With the evolution of European and French regulations on animal experimentation in higher education, taking greater account of animal welfare, the University of Angers has developed a virtual animal experimentation software named Exavir. Used for practical work (PW) in physiology, pharmacology and toxicology in the Health, Sciences, and engineering curricula, Exavir can be used to simulate various experiments for teaching purposes, in vivo or ex vivo. Thanks to an original approach integrating serious games with different scenarios, students gain autonomy and become directly involved in their learning. In addition, Exavir's collaborative and participative development approach fosters inter-university partnerships and the emergence of innovative teaching methods. A hybrid pilot study carried out on a sample of 22 students in the Pharmacy Department of the Faculty of Health showed that Exavir improved students' acquisition of teaching skills in both physiology and pharmacology, compared with practical work only based on animal organs. These encouraging results demonstrate for the first time the pedagogical advantages of Exavir and confirm the interest in developing such a platform. In this context, it appears that Exavir also opens up the possibility of adapting the practical work offered within universities, and thus responding to the changing ethical issues of the coming decades., (Copyright © 2024 Académie Nationale de Pharmacie. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a phytocannabinoid present in cannabis, obtained either by extraction from the plant or by synthesis. The latter has the advantage of being pure and contains few impurities, unlike CBD of plant origin. It is used by inhalation, ingestion or skin application. In France, the law stipulates that specialties containing CBD may contain up to 0.3% of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive principle of cannabis. From an analytical point of view, it is therefore important to be able to quantify the two compounds as well as their metabolites in the various matrices that can be used clinically or forensically, in particular saliva and blood. The transformation of CBD into THC, which has long been suggested, appears to be an analytical artifact under certain conditions. CBD is not without toxicity, whether acute or chronic, as seems to attest to the serious adverse effects recorded by pharmacovigilance during the experiment currently being conducted in France by the Agence Nationale de Sécurité du Médicament et des Produits de Santé. Although CBD does not seem to modify driving abilities, driving a vehicle after consuming CBD containing up to 0.3% THC, and sometimes much more in products bought on the internet, can lead to a positive result in screening and confirmation tests by law enforcement agencies, whether salivary or blood tests, and therefore lead to a legal sanction., (Copyright © 2023 Société française de pharmacologie et de thérapeutique. With the development of industry and increase in road traffic, atmospheric pollution has reached unprecedented levels in many regions of the world. Concentrations of pollutants are often far beyond the recommendations of the World Health Organization. Skin, as the first interface between the human body and its environment, is one of the main organs exposed to pollutants and to other environmental factors such as UV irradiation. As much as the effects of pollution and UV irradiation on human skin have been described, the underlying mechanisms remain to be elucidated. This state of the art study aims at exposing the numerous adverse effects of UV and pollution as well as their mode of action on skin. We summarize how these environmental factors negatively impact skin cells: by upregulating xenobiotic metabolism (and bioactivation) and inducing oxidative stress and inflammation, leading to premature aging and a disrupted barrier function. This paper focuses on the role of expertise in the trial of Marie Lafarge, accused of poisoning and killing her husband Charles Pouch-Lafarge on 14 January 1840. Historians have argued that testimonial evidence remained dominant in French criminal law throughout the nineteenth century, thus minimizing the part taken by expert testimony. Lafarge's case provides an opportunity to revisit this claim. Instead of generating certainty, expert opinion in this case created doubt and opened up new questions. Despite the contradictions of expert opinion, Lafarge was convicted. Doubt has been little discussed in the scholarship on expertise, but it is more frequently invoked in the context of agnotology - the making of culturally induced ignorance. The controversy surrounding the Lafarge case serves to illuminate the mechanisms by which doubt could arise, how people reacted to it, and how doubt was configured within an emerging medicolegal expertise.

Research on endocrine disruptors (EDs) developed from numerous disciplines. In this concert of disciplines, epidemiology is central to inform on the relevance for humans of mechanisms and dose-response functions identified in animals, to characterize the health impact (number of attributable disease cases), the cost associated with ED exposure, and the efficiency of the measures taken to limit exposure. Here, we present epidemiological tools to draw valid inference regarding effects of potential EDs. Epidemiology is generally observational, requiring care to control confounding bias. Many potential EDs have a short biological half-life; approaches relying on repeated biospecimens sampling allow limiting exposure misclassification and the resulting bias. For non-persistent compounds, couple-child cohorts are a central study design. Cohorts can now rely on molecular biology approaches to characterize exposures and intermediate pathways, which corresponds to the advent of molecular epidemiology and allows stronger interactions between epidemiology, toxicology, and molecular epidemiology to characterize the health effects of EDs., (Copyright © 2017 Académie des sciences. Risk assessment for personal care products requires the use of alternative methods since animal testing is now totally banned. Some of these methods are effective and have been validated by the "European Union Reference Laboratory for alternatives to animal testing"; but there is still a need for development and implementation of methods for specific endpoints. In this review, we have focused on dermal risk assessment because it is the prime route of absorption and main target organ for personal care products. Within this field, various areas must be assessed: irritation, sensitisation and toxicokinetic. Personal care product behaviour after use by the consumer and potential effects on the environment are also discussed. The purpose of this review is to show evolution and the prospects of alternative methods for safety dermal assessment. Assessment strategies must be adapted to the different chemical classes of substances studied but also to the way in which they are used.
