People cooperate every day in ways that range from largescale contributions that mitigate climate change to simple actions such as leaving another individual with choice - known as social mindfulness. It is not yet clear whether and how these complex and more simple forms of cooperation relate. Prior work has found that countries with individuals who made more socially mindful choices were linked to a higher country environmental performance - a proxy for complex cooperation. Here we replicated this initial finding in 41 samples around the world, demonstrating the robustness of the association between social mindfulness and environmental performance, and substantially built on it to show this relationship extended to a wide range of complex cooperative indices, tied closely to many current societal issues. We found that greater social mindfulness expressed by an individual was related to living in countries with more social capital, more community participation and reduced prejudice towards immigrants. This article introduces a review of research that has implemented oxytocin measurements in different fluids such as plasma, cerebrospinal fluid, urine and, mainly, saliva. The main purpose is to evaluate the level of evidence supporting the measurement of this biomarker implicated in a variety of psychological and social processes. First, a review of the technical developments that allowed the characterization, function establishing, and central and peripheral levels of this hormone is proposed. Then, the article approaches the current discussions regarding the level of reliability of the laboratory techniques that enable the measurement of oxytocin, focusing mainly on the determination of its concentration in saliva through Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). Finally, research results, which have established the major physiological correlates of this hormone in fields such as social neuroscience and neuropsychology, are collected and discussed in terms of the hormone measurement methods that different authors have used. Colombia's Recreovía program offers community-based free physical activity (PA) classes in parks. We evaluated built and social environmental factors influencing Recreovía local park environments, and facilitated a consensus-building and advocacy process among community members, policymakers and academic researchers aimed at improving uptake and impact of the Recreovía program. We used a mixed-methods approach, with individual and contextual PA measurements and a resident-enabled participatory approach (the Our Voice citizen science engagement model). Recreovía participants were likely to be women meeting PA recommendations, and highly satisfied with the Recreovía classes. Reported facilitators of the Recreovía included its role in enhancing social and individual well-being through PA classes. Reported barriers to usage were related to park maintenance, cleanliness and safety. The Our Voice process elicited community reflection, empowerment, advocacy and action. Our Voice facilitated the interplay among stakeholders and community members to optimize the Recreovía program as a facilitator of active living, and to make park environments more welcoming., (© The Author(s) 2020. The development of reliable water oxidation catalysts (WOCs) is essential for implementing artificial photosynthesis on a large technological scale. WOC research has evolved into two major branches, namely molecular and heterogeneous catalysts. Manifold design principles and plenty of mechanistic insights have been developed in these individual fields after decades of investigations. Over the past years, a growing need for knowledge transfer between both sides has emerged in order to expedite the development and optimization of next-generation WOCs. In this review, we first provide selected recent highlights in the area of molecular WOCs with different nuclearities, together with current mechanistic insight. WOCs offering molecular integrity under operational conditions are ideal platforms for elucidating reaction mechanisms and well-defined structure-function correlations at the atomic level. Next, recent mechanistic advances and design strategies for heterogeneous WOCs are illustrated for representative examples, together with a discussion of their inherent limitations in mechanistic studies. Finally, illustrative cases of knowledge transfer between molecular and heterogeneous WOCs are discussed to highlight the advantages of combining the best of both catalyst types. For the sake of conciseness, this review focuses primarily on WOCs based on the first-row transition metals, which are attracting increasing attention for both fundamental studies and economic applications.

There is extensive literature linking motor activity to cognitive effects at various stages in life, promoting both development and the reduction of aging associated pathologies. It is unclear whether the benefits of this activity on the cognitive level are associated with brain functions that are necessary for their performance or recurrence of activity or type of activity itself. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the type of motor activity (fine, gross, and motor imagery) in two modes (novel and routine) can affect cognitive functions such as attention, executive functions, and praxis in college students. A 2 × 3 factorial design with repeated measures was used without a control group and pre- and post-training evaluation. Fifty-three young people (14 men and 39 women) participated, with mean age of 18.94 years ( SD  = 1.61 years) and were divided into six groups. Each of the groups performed relevant training 20 minutes per day for five days depending on the group. Measures were taken pre and post-training for attention tests, attention span, working memory, visual constructive skills, procedural memory, and motor skills. The results show a "learning effect" from the exposure to the tests in measurements after training. It was also found that between groups, there is a difference in some of the variables of procedural memory (number of errors) and working memory. More extensive training could better reflect the effects of the training, and longitudinal evaluation could show the rate of change of functions. The main clinical implication could be the evaluation of training programs for recovery and motor training in cerebral plasticity having effect on the cognitive aspects.

Emotional memory has been primarily studied with fear-conditioning paradigms. Fear conditioning is a form of learning through which individuals learn the relationships between aversive events and otherwise neutral stimuli. The most-widely utilized procedures for studying emotional memories entail fear conditioning in rats. In these tasks, the unconditioned stimulus (US) is a footshock presented once or several times across single or several sessions, and the conditioned response (CR) is freezing. In a version of these procedures, called cued fear conditioning, a tone (conditioned stimulus, CS) is paired with footshocks (US) during the training phase. During the first test, animals are exposed to the same context in which training took place, and freezing responses are tested in the absence of footshocks and tones (i.e., a context test). During the second test, freezing is measured when the context is changed (e.g., by manipulating the smell and walls of the experimental chamber) and the tone is presented in the absence of footshocks (i.e., a cue test). Most cued fear conditioning procedures entail few tone-shock pairings (e.g., 1-3 trials in a single session). There is a growing interest in less common versions involving an extensive number of pairings (i.e., overtraining) related to the long-lasting effect called fear incubation (i.e., fear responses increase over time without further exposure to aversive events or conditioned stimuli). Extended fear-conditioning tasks have been key to the understanding of fear incubation's behavioral and neurobiological aspects, including its relationship with other psychological phenomena (e.g., post-traumatic stress disorder). Here, we describe an extended fear-conditioning protocol that produces overtraining and fear incubation in rats. This protocol entails a single training session with 25 tone-shock pairings (i.e., overtraining) and a comparison of conditioned freezing responses during context and cue tests 48 h (short-term) and 6 weeks (long-term) after training.

Water oxidation is the bottleneck reaction for overall water splitting as a direct and promising strategy toward clean fuels. However, the development of robust and affordable heterogeneous water oxidation catalysts remains challenging, especially with respect to the wide parameter space of synthesis and resulting material properties. Oxide catalysts performance in particular has been shown to depend on both synthetic routes and applied catalytic test methods. We here focus on spinel-type Co 3 O 4 as a representative case for an in-depth study of the influence of rather subtle synthetic parameter variations on the catalytic performance. To this end, a series of Co 3 O 4 samples was prepared via time-saving and tunable microwave-hydrothermal synthesis, while systematically varying a single parameter at a time. The resulting spinel-type catalysts were characterized with respect to key materials properties, including crystallinity, oxidation state and surface area using a wide range of analytical methods, such as PXRD, Raman/IR, XAS and XPS spectroscopy. Their water oxidation activity in electrocatalytic and chemical oxidation setups was then compared and correlated with the obtained catalyst properties. Both water oxidation methods displayed related trends concerning favorable synthetic parameters, namely higher activity for lower synthesis temperatures, lower precursor concentrations, addition of hydrogen peroxide and shorter ramping and reaction times, respectively. In addition to the surface area, structural features such as disorder were found to be influential for the water oxidation activity. Current catalysis undergoes a paradigm shift from molecular and heterogeneous realms towards new dynamic catalyst concepts. This calls for innovative strategies to understand the essential catalytic motifs and true catalysts emerging from oxidative transformation processes. Polyoxometalate (POM) clusters offer an inexhaustible reservoir for new noble metal-free catalysts and excellent model systems whose structure-activity relationships and mechanisms remain to be explored. Here, we first introduce a new {Zn n Na 6-n (B-α-SbW 9 O 33 ) 2 } (n = 3-6) catalyst family with remarkable tuning options of the Zn-based core structure and high activity in H 2 O 2 -assisted catalytic alcohol oxidation as a representative reaction. Next, high level solution-based computational modelling of the intermediates and transition states was carried out for [Zn 6 Cl 6 (SbW 9 O 33 ) 2 ] 12- as a representative well-defined case. The results indicate a radical-based oxidation process with the involvement of tungsten and adjacent zinc metal centers. The {Zn n Na 6-n (B-α-SbW 9 O 33 ) 2 } series indeed efficiently catalyses alcohol oxidation via peroxotungstate intermediates, in agreement with strong spectroscopic support and other experimental evidence for the radical mechanism. Finally, the high performance of [Zn 6 Cl 6 (SbW 9 O 33 ) 2 ] 12- was traced back to its transformation into a highly active and robust disordered Zn/W-POM catalyst. The atomic short-range structure of this resting pre-catalyst was elucidated by RMC modelling of the experimental W-L 3 and Zn-K edge EXAFS spectra and supported with further analytical methods. We demonstrate that computational identification of the reactive sites combined with the analytical tracking of their dynamic transformations provides essential input to expedite cluster-based molecular catalyst design.

The development of efficient, stable, and economic water oxidation catalysts (WOCs) is a forefront topic of sustainable energy research. We newly present a comprehensive three-step approach to systematically investigate challenging relationships among preparative history, properties, and performance in heterogeneous WOCs. To this end, we studied (1) the influence of the preparative method on the material properties and (2) their correlation with the performance as (3) a function of the catalytic test method. Spinel-type Co 3 O 4 was selected as a clear-cut model WOC and synthesized via nine different preparative routes. In search of the key material properties for high catalytic performance, these cobalt oxide samples were characterized with a wide range of analytical methods, including X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, BET surface area analysis, and transmission electron microscopy. Next, the corresponding catalytic water oxidation activities were assessed with the three most widely applied protocols to date, namely, photocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and chemical oxidation. The activity of the Co 3 O 4 samples was found to clearly depend on the applied test method. Increasing surface area and disorder as well as a decrease in oxidation states arising from low synthesis temperatures were identified as key parameters for high chemical oxidation activity. Surprisingly, no obvious property-performance correlations were found for photocatalytic water oxidation. In sharp contrast, all samples showed similar activity in electrochemical water oxidation. While loading of cocatalysts is one of the most widely investigated strategies to promote the efficiency of photoelectrodes, the understanding of their functionality remains controversial. We established new hybrid molecular photoanodes with cobalt-based molecular cubane cocatalysts on hematite as a model system. Photoelectrochemical and rate law analyses revealed an interesting functionality transition of the {Co(II) 4 O 4 }-type cocatalysts. Their role changed from predominant hole reservoirs to catalytic centers upon modulation of the applied bias. Kinetic analysis of the photoelectrochemical processes indicated that this observed transition arises from the dynamic equilibria of photogenerated surface charge carriers. Most importantly, we confirmed this functional transition of the cocatalysts and the related kinetic properties for several cobalt-based molecular and heterogeneous catalysts, indicating wide applicability of the derived trends. Additionally, complementary analytical characterizations show that a transformation of the applied molecular species occurs at higher applied bias, pointing to a dynamic interplay connecting molecular and heterogeneous catalysis. Our insights promote the essential understanding of efficient (molecular) cocatalyzed photoelectrode systems to design tailor-made hybrid devices for a wide range of catalytic applications.

This paper describes the behavioral data of an experiment in which water flows (WFs) were first used as replacement of the traditional electric shocks to test free-operant avoidance in Betta splendens (Hurtado-Parrado et al. 2019 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.beproc.2018.10.021). WFs with a duration of 10 s each were delivered with 30-s flow-flow (F-F) and response-flow (R-F) intervals in a custom-made shuttle tank. Fish escaped or avoided the WFs by changing compartments. Crossings during the WFs, interrupted the flows, were automatically scored as escape (Esc), and initiated a new R-F interval. Crossings that occurred during R-F or F-F intervals were scored as avoidance responses and also reset the R-F interval. We compared the effect of adding a warning stimulus - curtains of air bubbles - to the last 5 s of the R-F interval; i.e., signaled versus unsignaled avoidance. A unique development of the WFs procedure, and thus the data here described, is that crossings were further differentiated into subcategories; namely, early avoidance (EA) if a crossing occurred during the first 25 s of the R-F interval; late avoidance (LA) if a crossing occurred during the last 5 s of the R-F interval; and Flow-Flow avoidance (FF) if a crossing occurred anytime during the F-F interval. Here we present the data of six bettas across the different phases of the experiment; namely, baseline (BL - no WFs programmed), signaled avoidance (SA - warning stimulus scheduled), and unsignaled avoidance (UA - no warning stimulus scheduled). The dataset available at the Open Science Framework (OSF) repository (http://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/FMHXD (Hurtado-Parrado et al., 2019)) includes for each fish and per 20-min daily session the total number of crossings; frequency of each type of crossing (Esc, EA, LA, FF); total WF frequency and duration, the total time spent in each compartment, and an index of preference for each compartment based on the proportion of time spent in the tank's compartments.

The vast majority of research on aversive control of behavior using animal models employs electric-shock based procedures with avian and mammalian species. Notwithstanding that pragmatic aspects explain this prominence in the field, there is still a need for testing well-established facts about shock-based aversive control using other, perhaps more ecologically valid or biologically relevant, forms of stimulation with other species. Following up on an observation that water disturbances appear to be aversive to Betta splendens (bettas), we developed a preparation for studying free-operant avoidance with this species in which water flows (WFs) replaced electric shocks. Fish changed compartments in a shuttle tank to escape or avoid 10-s WFs, which were delivered with 30-s flow-flow and response-flow intervals. We tested the effect of adding a warning stimulus (curtains of air bubbles) to the last 5 s of the response-flow interval (i.e., signaled avoidance) on the bettas' temporal distribution of crossings and swimming patterns. Escape was the predominant response, which importantly reduced the exposure to the WFs. Avoidance responses rarely exceeded the frequency of escape. The warning stimulus did not produce the expected postponement of responses to the last segment of the response-flow interval. Distinctive swimming patterns emerged, dissipated, and reappeared during baseline and treatment conditions. These findings confirm the aversive function of WFs for bettas and expand the generality of negative reinforcement phenomena using non-shock-based procedures with a less-frequently studied species. Transition metal carbodiimides MNCN (M = Co, Ni, Co 0.9 Ni 0.1 , Mn and Cu), were studied by simultaneous operando Raman and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) with focus on surface oxide detection during electrocatalytic water oxidation. As a proof of concept, easily modifiable screen-printed electrodes were used in this unified operando synchrotron setup for a trade-off between convenience of electrochemical anodization and spectroscopic data acquisition. Monitoring of chemical and structural transformations at the electrode surface during initial anodic electrode polarization shows stability for MNCN with M = Co, Ni, Co 0.9 Ni 0.1 and Mn. While MnNCN is inactive, CoNCN emerges as the most active representative of the series. CuNCN displays pronounced side reactions and the formation of a surface copper oxide layer leading to lower current density attributed to water oxidation, as evident from an irreversible variation of the CuNCN redox behaviour in rotating ring-disc voltammetry. Furthermore, the accompanying structural and vibrational spectroscopy properties of the different MNCN compounds were explored with complementary ex situ analytical methods.

Solid state materials with crystalline order have been well-known and characterized for almost a century while the description of disordered materials still bears significant challenges. Among these are the atomic short-range order and electronic properties of amorphous transition metal oxides [aTMOs], that have emerged as novel multifunctional materials due to their optical switching properties and high-capacity to intercalate alkali metal ions at low voltages. For decades, research on aTMOs has dealt with technological optimization. However, it remains challenging to unveil their intricate atomic short-range order. Currently, no systematic and broadly applicable methods exist to assess atomic-size structure, and since electronic localization is structure-dependent, still there are not well-established optical and electronic mechanisms for modelling the properties of aTMOs. We present state-of-the-art systematic procedures involving theory and experiment in a self-consistent computational framework to unveil the atomic short-range order and its role for the electronic properties. The scheme is applied to amorphous tungsten trioxide aWO 3 , which is the most studied electrochromic aTMO in spite of its unidentified atomic-size structure. Our approach provides a one-to-one matching of experimental data and corresponding model structure from which electronic properties can be directly calculated in agreement with the electronic transitions observed in the XANES spectra.

Brain atlases are tools based on comprehensive studies used to locate biological characteristics (structures, connections, proteins, and gene expression) in different regions of the brain. These atlases have been disseminated to the point where tools have been created to store, manage, and share the information they contain. This study used the data published by the Allen Mouse Brain Atlas (2004) for mice (C57BL/6J) and Allen Human Brain Atlas (2010) for humans (6 donors) to compare the expression of serotonin-related genes. Genes of interest were searched for manually in each case (in situ hybridization for mice and microarrays for humans), normalized expression data ( z -scores) were extracted, and the results were graphed. Despite the differences in methodology, quantification, and subjects used in the process, a high degree of similarity was found between expression data. Here we compare expression in a way that allows the use of translational research methods to infer and validate knowledge. This type of study allows part of the relationship between structures and functions to be identified, by examining expression patterns and comparing levels of expression in different states, anatomical correlations, and phenotypes between different species. The study concludes by discussing the importance of knowing, managing, and disseminating comprehensive, open-access studies in neuroscience.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative condition, which compromises the motor functions and causes the alteration of some executive brain functions. The presence of changes in cognitive symptoms in PD could be due to the procedure of deep brain stimulation (DBS). We searched in several databases for studies that compared performance in executive function tests before and after the DBS procedure in PE and then performed a meta-analysis. After the initial search, there were 15 articles that specifically evaluated the functions of verbal fluency, working memory, cognitive flexibility, abstract thinking, and inhibition. It was found that there were differences in the evaluation of the cognitive functions in terms of the protocols, which generated heterogeneity in the results of the meta-analysis. Likewise, a tendency to diminish functions like verbal fluency and inhibition was found, being this consistent with similar studies. In the other functions evaluated, no difference was found between pre- and postsurgery scores. Background: CO2 resurfacing and CO2 microfractionated laser systems are reliable tools to improve different facial pathologic skin conditions but are associated with a high rate of complications specially in Fitzpatrick III, IV, and V skin phototypes, predominant in the Latin population, which has pushed many surgeons to change technologies and abandon its use., Objective: To compare patient results with the CO2 resurfacing laser and microfractionated CO2 laser resurfacing in all skin types and show similar results to those obtained worldwide in patients with phototypes III, IV, and V., Methods: Standardized review of medical records from a database of private practice patients treated since January 1998 to July 2012 with SlimE30 MiXto SX(®) CO2 laser. Evaluation of outcomes, complications, and satisfaction of three different modalities of treatment (CO2 ablative laser, CO2 microfractionated and a combination of both) was made., Results: A total of 665 treated patients were included. Ablative CO2 was applied to 80.3 %, CO2 microfractionated to 15.1 %, and mixed treatment to 4.5 % of cases. Globally, hyperpigmentation rates were 30.4 % in the CO2 resurfacing group, 16.3 % when a combination of modalities was applied and 11 % in microfractionated CO2 cases. A steady increase of these rates is shown as the phototype becomes higher. Satisfaction rates were high for all groups: 86.7 % in the mixed group, 82.2 % in the microfractionated CO2, and 79.6 % in the CO2 ablative., Conclusions: Good results and an acceptable rate of complications in latin skins are obtainable after treating patients with CO2 ablative and microfractionated CO2 systems alone or in combination. Staged treatments and adequate post-procedure care reduce these complications.

The goal of intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) that interact in natural language is to emulate the benefits that a well-trained human tutor provides to students, by interpreting student answers and appropriately responding in order to encourage elaboration. BRCA Gist is an ITS developed using AutoTutor Lite, a Web-based version of AutoTutor. Fuzzy-trace theory theoretically motivated the development of BRCA Gist, which engages people in tutorial dialogues to teach them about genetic breast cancer risk. We describe an empirical method to create tutorial dialogues and fine-tune the calibration of BRCA Gist's semantic processing engine without a team of computer scientists. We created five interactive dialogues centered on pedagogic questions such as "What should someone do if she receives a positive result for genetic risk of breast cancer?" This method involved an iterative refinement process of repeated testing with different texts and successively making adjustments to the tutor's expectations and settings in order to improve performance. The goal of this method was to enable BRCA Gist to interpret and respond to answers in a manner that best facilitated learning. We developed a method to analyze the efficacy of the tutor's dialogues. We found that BRCA Gist's assessment of participants' answers was highly correlated with the quality of the answers found by trained human judges using a reliable rubric. The dialogue quality between users and BRCA Gist predicted performance on a breast cancer risk knowledge test completed after exposure to the tutor. The appropriateness of BRCA Gist's feedback also predicted the quality of answers and breast cancer risk knowledge test scores.

Iron is an essential element for oceanic microbial life but its low bioavailability limits microorganisms in large areas of the oceans. To acquire this metal many marine bacteria produce organic chelates that bind and transport iron (siderophores). While it has been hypothesized that the global production of siderophores by heterotrophic bacteria and some cyanobacteria constitutes the bulk of organic ligands binding iron in the ocean because stability constants of siderophores and these organic ligands are similar, and because ligand concentrations rise sharply in response to iron fertilization events, direct evidence for this proposal is lacking. This lack is due to the difficulty in characterizing these ligands due both to their extremely low concentrations and their highly heterogeneous nature. The situation for characterizing photoactive siderophores in situ is more problematic because of their expected short lifetimes in the photic zone. An alternative approach is to make use of high sensitivity molecular technology (qPCR) to search for siderophore biosynthesis genes related to the production of photoactive siderophores. In this way one can access their "biochemical potential" and utilize this information as a proxy for the presence of these siderophores in the marine environment. Here we show, using qPCR primers designed to detect biosynthetic genes for the siderophores vibrioferrin, petrobactin and aerobactin that such genes are widespread and based on their abundance, the "biochemical potential" for photoactive siderophore production is significant. Concurrently we also briefly examine the microbial biodiversity responsible for such production as a function of depth and location across a North Atlantic transect.

Background: The development of liposuction provided plastic surgeons with a safe and effective way to sculpt the human figure. The techniques and instrumentation used in the performance of liposuction have evolved significantly since its introduction., Objective: The authors review their experience with different liposuction techniques over the past 25 years., Methods: Data from patients who had undergone liposuction were collected from the personal databases of four different surgeons and from the database at the Corpus and Rostrum Plastic Surgery Clinic in Cali, Colombia. A retrospective review was conducted and the results from different liposuction techniques were compared., Results: A total of 26,259 patient charts were reviewed. The results showed that 5% of patients experienced a postsurgical seroma. Postsurgical fibrosis developed to some degree in 2.3% of patients. Anemia was present in 18% of all patients and in 60% of those patients who underwent dry liposuction. Ninety percent of patients reported postoperative pain. The incidence of deep vein thrombosis was 0.03%, as was the incidence of pulmonary embolism. Mortality was 0.01% and was mainly caused by pulmonary embolism. Patient satisfaction was similar for all of the described techniques., Conclusions: The incidence of anemia was reduced significantly in patients undergoing tumescent liposuction versus dry liposuction. However, the occurrence of seroma increased with the introduction of tumescent liposuction. The incidence of postoperative pain and fibrosis was similar for all liposuction techniques reviewed. The aesthetic results obtained using ultrasound- or laser-assisted liposuction were similar to those obtaining using other techniques.

In augmentation mammoplasty, the selection of placement for implants is based on the characteristics of each patient and the tissue conditions to ensure an optimal covering of these. The location must not be arbitrarily based on the preferences of the surgeon and the patient, but must ensure adequate tissue covering, thus minimizing shorts and long-term risks. Retromammary, retropectoral, and total and mixed retromuscular implants have been used. The retrofascia location of the mammary prosthesis reported in this article was described for the first time in the year 2000. This retrofascia technique refers to the collocation of the implant behind the fascia and in front of the pectoralis major muscle with the goal of achieving proper covering and good support of the implant. This is a nonrandomized prospective study investigated 110 cases of mammary hypoplasia and ptosis levels 1 and 2 from October 2001 to October 2002 with an average follow-up period of 1 year. Periareolar incisions were used in the retrofascia collocation of the mammary implant. The types of implants used included texturized silicone gel (85%) and smooth silicone gel (15%). As demonstrated by the findings, this surgical technique can achieve a good support to keep the prosthesis in an adequate position, maintaining the superior pole with a very natural projection. The incidence of complications was 7.6%, the most frequent of which was capsular contracture (3.53%).

A case of a upper extremity pilomatrixoma (calcifying epithelioma of Malherbe) clinically confused with a secondary reaction to the dog antigen application presented in a young woman and diagnosed following surgically excised is presented. On cytologic examination, basaloid cells, multinucleated giant cells and deposits of calcium were identified. Adjacent to the basaloid cells were acellular masses suggestive of ghost cells.

In order to warn the health authorities in our region about the economic damages that a hemorrhagic dengue epidemic may cause, it was decided to study and publish the estimated cost of the Cuban epidemic in 1981, during which 344,203 diseased were reported, 10312 severe cases and 158 deceased. Economic costs include hospitalization expenses, assistance in emergency units, social security, expenses in out-patient treatment, goods not produced and expenses in the anti-vector campaign. Probably, this epidemic which could be controlled in about 4 months, has been the one causing most economic damages to date.

Dengue haemorrhagic fever/dengue shock syndrome (DHF/DSS) is one of the principal causes of hospitalization and death among children in several south-east Asian countries. Also, in the Region of the Americas, there has been an increase in the frequency of dengue fever epidemics and in the number of cases of DHF/DSS. In 1981 an epidemic of dengue haemorrhagic fever occurred in Cuba and this suggests that there is a high risk that such epidemics could recur in the region. The article summarizes the main clinical, virological, and epidemiological data obtained during the outbreak, some of which are reported for the first time.
