The interaction of an optical pulse with a quantum well saturable absorber is simulated using a semi-classical two-level-atom model which has been modified to approximate spectral hole burning in the carrier distribution. Saturable absorption behaviour is examined in the limit where pulse duration approaches the carrier-carrier scattering time. For long pulses bleaching dominates the absorber response but as the pulse duration approaches the carrier-carrier scattering timescale an additional pulse shaping mechanism becomes active, allowing the absorber to continue to shorten pulses beyond the limit set by bleaching. Examination of the spectral and temporal absorption profiles suggests that intense pulses experience additional pulse shortening from the optical Stark effect.

We present a method to experimentally characterize the gain filter and calculate a corresponding parabolic gain bandwidth of lasers that are described by "class A" dynamics by solving the master equation of spectral condensation for Gaussian spectra. We experimentally determine the gain filter, with an equivalent parabolic gain bandwidth of up to 51 nm, for broad-band InGaAs/GaAs quantum well gain surface-emitting semiconductor laser structures capable of producing pulses down to 60 fs width when mode-locked with an optical Stark saturable absorber mirror.

We report what is to our knowledge the first operation of a planar dielectric tapered-waveguide laser. The waveguide laser is fabricated by potassium-ion exchange in Nd(3+) -doped BK7 glass and consists of a single-mode channel waveguide of a few micrometers' width followed by a linear taper up to a broad region with a width of ~180microm . A slope efficiency of 42% is found both in the tapers and in standard channel waveguides fabricated upon the same substrate, indicating that the tapers and the channels have similar internal losses; hence the low-loss nature of the tapered beam expansion. The output from either end of the tapered structure is found to be nearly diffraction limited.

We present, for what we believe is the first time, results of continuous-wave diode-pumping of a Nd:YVO (4) laser with an adaptive gain-grating resonator. The system is shown to produce more than a 7-W output in a TEM>(00) single longitudinal mode with a laser beam propagation parameter M(2) of <1.3 and <1.1 in the x and y axes, respectively. We demonstrate the self-adaptive abilities of the resonator by spatial correction of an intracavity aberrator for both injected and self-starting versions of the cavity.

High-phase-conjugate reflectivities of >800% have been achieved through degenerate four-wave mixing in a cw diode-side-pumped Nd:YVO(4) amplifier. Reflectivity curves are shown as a function of input pump-beam intensity for three values of small-signal amplifier gain, and comparison is made with a numerical simulation.

A compact high-power planar waveguide laser end pumped by a diode-bar is reported. The waveguide was fabricated by liquid-phase epitaxy and had an 80-microm-thick, 1.5-at. % Nd:Y(3)Al(5)O(12) core on a Y(3)Al(5)O(12) substrate. A maximum output power of 6.2 W was obtained at 1.064 microm when the device was pumped with a 20-W diode bar operating near 807 nm, giving an overall optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 31%. The total device length was 5 cm.

We propose and theoretically analyze three-level cladding-pumped fiber lasers in which the laser-active dopant is placed in a ring around a single-mode core. A ring-doped laser can work efficiently at wavelengths with strong small-signal absorption. This is otherwise difficult in a cladding-pumped fiber. Moreover, ring doping makes the laser less sensitive to quenching of the laser-active dopant and to excited-state absorption of the lasing field. In simulations of a Yb(3+) -doped fiber laser, ring doping increased the slope efficiency to 62%, up from 13% for a conventional core-doped fiber.

We report what is to our knowledge the first laser operation of Nd(3+) -doped LiNbO(3) near 900 nm. An absorbed power threshold of 26 mW was obtained when the device was pumped at 814 nm. The design of the waveguide geometry to favor laser operation at this wavelength is demonstrated.

We report laser action in a Ti-diffused LiNbO(3) waveguide doped with trivalent Yb ions by thermal indiffusion. Lasing was observed at 1008, 1030, and 1060 nm with thresholds as low as 15-mW launched pump power. We reduced photorefractivity, which initially permitted only intermittent lasing, by annealing the sample in wet O(2). The annealed sample lased continuously in a cavity formed by high-ref lectivity mirrors; however, with a 7% output coupler the output power exhibited instabilities. The greatest value of the output power observed under these conditions was consistent with a slope efficiency of ~16% with respect to absorbed power.

We report what we believe to be the first planar-technology waveguide laser in the 2-microm region. Laser operation of the (3)H(4) to (3)H(6) transition of Tm(3+) ions in a lead germanate glass host has been observed in an ion-implanted planar waveguide.

We report 1.064-microm laser operation of an epitaxially grown Nd: YAG planar waveguide with thresholds as low as ~0.7 mW when high-reflectivity mirrors are used. The output is single mode and, when a 83% reflectivity output coupler is used, has a diode pumped slope efficiency of ~40%. Output powers in excess of 60 mW have been obtained when pumping with a Rhodamine 6G dye laser.

We report what is to our knowledge the first fabrication and laser operation of ion-implanted Nd:GGG channel waveguides. Diode-pumped operation has been achieved with absorbed power thresholds as low as ~2 mW and a slope efficiency of ~30% with respect to absorbed power.

Laser oscillation in an ion-implanted planar Nd:MgO:LiNbO(3) waveguide is demonstrated for the first time to our knowledge. Details of the waveguide structure, spectroscopic properties, photorefractive effects, and laser performance are given. A simple calculation of the absorbed power threshold gives ~8 mW, in fair agreement with the experimental value of ~17 mW.

A tunable Nd(3+)-doped monomode-fiber laser has been constructed that operates continuously at room temperature. The tuning range covered is 0.900-0.945 and 1.070-1.135 microm. Output powers of 3 mW for 53 mW of absorbed pump and 2 mW for 35 mW of absorbed pump, respectively, were achieved for the two ranges from pumping by a dye laser operating at 590 nm.

The hyperfine splitting of the ground state and the lowest electronic component of the (1)D(2) excited state have been measured for Pr(3+) in YAG. We show that a particularly simple and powerful technique is the production of sublevel coherence by short-pulse (impact) excitation, which is detected by coherent forward scattering of a weak probe beam and Fourier transformation of the resulting quantum-beat signal. This yielded excited-state splittings of 6.49 and 8.29 MHz. The ground state shows large pseudoquadrupole splittings of 33.4 and 41.6 MHz, which were obtained by optically detected nuclear quadrupole resonance.
