Introduction: The lack of evidence of mental health patients' perception on patient participation in multidisciplinary team meetings (MTMs) is a potential threat to the person-centeredness of care., Aim: To explore the perceptions of mental health patients regarding patient participation in MTMs and to identify factors associated with these perceptions., Method: In a cross-sectional study, 127 former and 109 currently admitted mental health patients completed the Patient Participation during Team Meetings Questionnaire (PaPaT-Q). The STROBE-checklist was used for reporting the study., Results: Overall, patients' perceptions were positive. Former patients expressed greater willingness to participate in MTMs, considered participation as more important, and felt more competent. These patients also exhibited a stronger preference for an autonomous role in medical decision making when participating in MTMs. The perception varied across factors such as gender, educational level, nature of psychological complaints and prior experience(s) with participation in MTMs., Discussion: These findings may help mental healthcare professionals to become more aware to factors associated with mental health patients' perception of patient participation in MTMs., Implications: The results can be used by mental healthcare professionals to motivate mental health patients in an even more tailor-made basis to participate in MTMs when admitted in a hospital., (© 2024 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Rationale: In the Collaborative Network To Take Responsibility for Oral Anticancer Therapy (CONTACT) project, an evidence-based and patient-centred care(PCC) pathway was implemented in 12 oncology departments in Flanders. The care pathway was developed in cocreation by an interdisciplinary project team, and tailored to the local hospital context., Aims and Objectives: In this study, the impact of the care pathways on quality of PCC and other patient outcomes was investigated., Method: A pre-posttest study was performed in nine of the participating oncology departments. The primary outcome was quality of PCC. Furthermore, level of patient self-management, medication adherence, satisfaction with information about the oral anticancer drug and quality of life were measured as secondary outcomes. Linear mixed models were used to investigate differences in outcomes between the pre- and posttest group., Results: Quality of PCC, as well as all secondary outcomes improved after implementation of the care pathway. However, the changes in pre- and posttest scores were not significant. The overall quality of PCC increased from 3.72 to 3.88, measured on a five-point Likert scale (p = 0.124)., Conclusion: This study showed small, however, no significant improvements in the quality of PCC and other patient outcomes. The lack of significant changes can be attributed to the complexity of the care pathway development, poor or unstable implementation of the care pathway and limited changes in follow-up care. Aims: To explore patterns and dynamics during the co-design process of nurse practitioners' role development in three departments in a Belgian tertiary hospital., Design: Participatory action research was utilised in conjunction with principles of a Grounded Theory approach to explore patterns and dynamics., Methods: Sixteen meetings were conducted between January and June 2021 with interdisciplinary teams to develop the roles. Thirteen exploratory interviews were held with the stakeholders involved between March and June 2022. All meetings and interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data were systematically analysed using researcher triangulation and thematic analysis., Results: Stakeholders' initial conception of the nurse practitioner roles affected development. A dynamic interplay of individual, team-related and contextual (e.g., financial and legal) factors shaped these conceptions. Through co-design, stakeholders' conception evolved as insights were shared, misconceptions challenged and perspectives broadened. Physicians generally the developmental process, while nursing leadership was more fragmented., Conclusion: This study identifies patterns and dynamics in interdisciplinary teams during the developmental process. The key findings underpin the crucial role of stakeholders' conceptions, use of co-design and leadership in this process. Therefore, a thorough understanding of initial conceptions is ess, and efforts should be directed towards providing sufficient knowledge and experience to prevent misconceptions. Additionally, this study emphasises the significance of a balanced team composition that incorporates diverse conceptions of the role. Interprofessional communication is crucial for patient care, yet there is a dearth of comprehensive assessment tools essential to train and assess healthcare students. While the Interprofessional Educational Collaborative framework (IPEC) outlines eight sub-competencies, it lacks detailed behavioral indicators. This study aimed to create a repository of interprofessional communication behaviors to complement the IPEC sub-competencies. From 12,448 articles, 55 were selected and thematically analyzed with NVivo18®. We identified 230 interprofessional communication behaviors, organized into 10 themes and 61 sub-themes, aligning with the IPEC sub-competencies. This comprehensive repository could be foundational for developing interprofessional communication assessment tools in healthcare education and aiding healthcare institutions in improving interprofessional communication practices.

Introduction: Involving mental healthcare patients in nursing handover practices seems a promising method for increasing patient participation, empowerment, and shared decision-making but is hardly found in practice., Method: An explorative review on bedside handovers in mental health care was conducted. Searched databases included CINHAHL, Web of Science, PubMed, and Embase. The search strategy yielded 3126 articles. Nine articles met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review., Results: Pre- and post-implementation perspectives were described, as well as strategies for implementation. After the implementation of bedside handover, nurses and patients experienced more time spent together and a greater sense of involvement with the care plans could be noticed., Discussion: Being involved in bedside handovers facilitates active participation and open dialogue between nurses and patients. This accelerates the opportunities for patients to take part in shared decision-making and feel recognised as experts in their illness experience. Background: Self-management of a chronic condition is a complex but increasingly important issue. However, a supportive attitude and behaviour among healthcare professionals is hampered by a lack of awareness, knowledge and motivation. In addition, the role of professionals in supporting self-management seems unclear., Methods: A blended learning program for primary healthcare professionals was developed to strengthen self-management support in primary care. The program was piloted in community health centres and multidisciplinary medical practices in Flanders. Using the Kirkpatrick model, the impact on healthcare professionals' reaction, learning and behaviour regarding self-management support was evaluated., Results: A total of 60 healthcare professionals registered for the educational program. Post-learning questionnaires and verbal feedback showed a positive response, with professionals highly appreciating the innovative blended learning approach. In terms of learning, participants showed a good understanding of self-management support, although nuances were observed in the application of acquired knowledge to practice scenarios. Finally, preliminary insights into behavioural change were explored, revealing a positive impact of the intervention on participants' supportive self-management behaviours in healthcare practice., Conclusions: Our study provides preliminary insights into the outcomes of a blended learning program designed to increase awareness and knowledge of self-management support among professionals. Aims: (1) To identify, evaluate and summarize evidence about the objectives and characteristics of mentoring programmes for specialized nurses (SNs) or nurse navigators (NNs) and advanced practice nurses (APNs) and (2) to identify the effectiveness of these programmes., Design: A systematic review based on PRISMA guidelines., Data Sources: From November 2022 until 7 December 2022, four databases were searched: PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL and The Cochrane Library., Review Methods: Study selection was performed independently by two researchers. Disagreements were discussed until consensus was reached. Data extraction was undertaken for included studies. Data synthesis was conducted using narrative analysis. Quality appraisal was performed using the Critical Appraisal Skill Programme (CASP) and Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT)., Results: Twelve articles were included, all of which focused on mentoring programmes for APNs. Different forms of mentorship (e.g. (in)formal mentorship, work shadowing, workshops) were reported. Studies reported positive outcomes on job retention (n = 5), job satisfaction (n = 6), skills improvement (n = 7), satisfaction with the programme (n = 7) and confidence improvement (n = 4) among participants of mentoring programmes., Conclusion: There is a lack of uniformity and consistency in various elements of mentoring programmes. Further research is needed to develop mentoring programmes for both APNs and SNs/NNs in a systematic and theoretically underpinned manner. It is necessary to establish a thorough evaluation methodology, preferably using a mixed methods design that includes both a qualitative process evaluation and a comprehensive outcome evaluation using validated questionnaires, taking into account the NN/APN, the interprofessional team and organizational level., Impact: The synthesis of evidence may be useful to organizations developing and implementing mentoring programmes for both SN/NN and APN. Introduction: There is a lack of distinct and measurable outcomes in psychiatric and/or mental health nursing which negatively impacts guiding clinical practice, assessing evidence-based nursing interventions, ensuring future-proof nursing education and establishing visibility as a profession and discipline. Psychiatric and/or mental health nursing struggle to demonstrate patient-reported outcomes to assess the effectiveness of their practice. A systematic review that summarising patient-reported outcomes, associated factors, measured nursing care/interventions and used measurement scales of psychiatric and/or mental health nursing in the adult population in acute, intensive and forensic psychiatric wards in hospitals will capture important information on how care can be improved by better understanding what matters and what is important to patients themselves. This review can contribute to the design, planning, delivery and assessment of the quality of current and future nursing care METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This protocol follows the Cochrane methodological guidance on systematic reviews of interventions and The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocol. The search strategy will be identified by consultations with clinical and methodological experts and by exploring the literature. The databases Ovid MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, APA PsychARTICLES, Web of Science and Scopus will be searched for all published studies. Studies will be screened and selected with criteria described in the population, intervention, control and outcomes format after a pilot test by two researchers. Studies will be screened in two stages: (1) title and abstract screening and (2) full-text screening. Data extraction and the quality assessment based on the Johanna Briggs Institute guidelines will be conducted by two researchers. Objectives: Advanced practice nursing roles in cancer care are diverse and exist across the cancer care continuum. However, the titles used and the scope of practice differ across countries. This diversity is likely to be misleading to patients and influence nurses' contribution to health care. An understanding of the current state of advanced practice nursing roles in cancer care internationally is needed to inform opportunities for future role development and enhance cancer nursing career pathways., Methods: This scoping review included a systematic search of four databases: MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Academic Search Complete. Independent screening for papers meeting the review's inclusion criteria was undertaken using online screening software. Data extraction, coding, and mapping were undertaken in NVivo 12., Results: Of the 13,409 records identified, 108 met the review's inclusion criteria. A variety of roles in cancer care settings were described. The United States and the United Kingdom had the most titles for advanced practice nursing roles. Tumor-specific roles were described and integrated into different phases of the cancer care continuum. Trends in continuing professional development for advanced practice nurses in cancer care included the rise in Fellowship programs in the United States and practice-based education in the United Kingdom., Conclusions: The differences in advanced practice nursing roles in cancer care allow regional and institutional variation to meet the needs of patient populations and health care system demands. However, a lack of clarity surrounding titles and roles results in confusion and underutilization of these nurses' highly specialized skill sets., Implications for Nursing Practice: Incongruence in titles and scope of practice internationally will ultimately result in a merging of roles. Objectives: To reflect on current practice analyses regarding the role of advanced practice nurse (APN) researcher in oncology, and report on the challenges that were faced and lessons we have learned when intensively working with APNs on doing research within the domain of oncology., Methods: Discussions with APNs supervised by or who collaborated with academics in nursing science during the past 10 years on doing research within the domain of oncology., Results: Several misconceptions exist regarding the role of APNs as researchers. During the research process, APNs are confronted with a wide range of topics based on evidence gaps and unmet needs, challenges linked to specific research designs, and ethical issues. APNs also face challenges related to the dissemination of research. This step in the research process is often overlooked due to APNs' lack of time, limited financial resources, insufficient support for academic writing, or lower priority for APNs and other healthcare providers., Conclusion: The APN role of researcher in oncology is fundamental for the advancement of oncology nursing care, implementation of evidence-based practice and innovations in oncology patient care, and further development of the nursing profession and nursing science. Participation in research is considered a main function that differentiates APNs from nurses in other clinical roles, such as specialized nurses. In mental health care settings, inpatients are increasingly engaged in their care process, allowing them to participate in multidisciplinary team meetings. Research into how mental health patients (MHPs) experience participating in such meetings is, however, limited. This study aimed to explore inpatients' experiences when participating in multidisciplinary team meetings in a Belgian inpatient mental health unit. This study used a phenomenological design with data collection including semistructured interviews. Twelve individuals participated in the study. Participants were MHPs admitted to a mental health unit that works according to the model of recovery-oriented mental health practice. Findings were analysed utilising thematic analysis. Results showed that the MHPs' experiences were mainly positive but intense. Themes included: 'Feeling honoured to be invited', 'Sense of obligation', 'Feeling nervous', 'Transparency in team members' insights', 'Feeling supported by the (primary) nurse' and 'Duality about the presence of relatives'. By taking these findings into account, (mental) healthcare workers gain insight into the patient's lived experiences, allowing them to provide more person-centred care when inpatients participate in multidisciplinary team meetings. Moreover, these findings can support mental health units in implementing or optimising patient participation in multidisciplinary team meetings. Aims: The aim of the study was to develop a comprehensive competency framework for advanced practice nurses in Belgium., Design: A co-design development process was conducted., Methods: This study consisted of two consecutive stages (November 2020-December 2021): (1) developing a competency framework for advanced practice nurses in Belgium by the research team, based on literature and (2) group discussions or interviews with and written feedback from key stakeholders. 11 group discussions and seven individual interviews were conducted with various stakeholder groups with a total of 117 participants., Results: A comprehensive competency framework containing 31 key competencies and 120 enabling competencies was developed based on the Canadian Medical Education Directions for Specialists Competency Framework. These competencies were grouped into seven roles: clinical expert and therapist, organizer of quality care and leader in innovation, professional and clinical leader, collaborator, researcher, communicator and health promoter., Conclusion: The developed competency framework has resemblance to other international frameworks. This framework emphasized the independent role of the advanced practice nurse and provided guidance in a clear task division and delegation to other professionals. It can provide a solid foundation for delivering high-quality, patient-centred care by advanced practice nurses in the years to come., Implications for the Profession: This competency framework can guide further development of advanced practice nursing education in Belgium and represents a starting point for future evaluation of its feasibility and usability in education and clinical practice. Advanced practice nurses and healthcare managers can also use the framework as an instrument for personal and professional development, performance appraisal, and further alignment of these function profiles in clinical practice. Finally, this framework can inform and guide policymakers towards legal recognition of advanced practice nursing in Belgium and inspire the development of advanced practice nursing profiles in countries where these profiles are still emerging., Impact: What problem did the study address? The absence of a detailed competency framework for advanced practice nurses complicates legal recognition, role clarification and implementation in practice in Belgium. A rigorously developed competency framework could clarify which competencies to integrate in future advanced practice nursing education, mentorship programs and practice. What were the main findings? The competency framework outlined seven roles for advanced practice nurses: clinical expert and therapist, organizer of quality care and leader in innovation, professional and clinical leader, collaborator, researcher, communicator, and health promoter. Differentiation from other expert nursing profiles and clinical autonomy of advanced practice nurses were pivotal. Where and on whom will the research have impact? The comprehensive competency framework for advanced practice nurses and the collaborative methodology used can inspire other countries where these profiles are still emerging. The competency framework can be used as an instrument for role clarification, performance appraisals, continuous professional development, and professional (e-)portfolios. Background: During adolescence, adolescents and young adults (AYAs) are expected to transfer their care from the pediatric environment towards an adult-focused setting. To prevent an abrupt transfer of care, it is recommended to provide AYAs with chronic conditions an adequate transition program. The aim of this paper is to describe the study protocol for the development of a transition program for AYAs with common chronic conditions (COCCOS study), using the Experience-Based Co-Design (EBCD) methodology., Methods and Analysis: A qualitative, participatory study is conducted in Flanders (Belgium). Study participants are AYAs (n≥15, 14-25 years old, diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, asthma, or obesity), their families, and healthcare providers (n≥15). The study is composed of eight EBCD stages: clinical site observations, in-depth interviews, trigger film, healthcare providers' feedback event, AYAs' feedback event, joint event, co-design workshops, and a celebration event. Photovoice will take place as a starting point of EBCD. Data will be analyzed using thematic analysis., Results: Data collection has started in January 2023 and is expected to be completed in May 2024. As of August 2023, over 15 clinical site observations have been conducted. A total of 18 AYAs, two parents, six healthcare providers have been enrolled and a total of 20 interviews have been conducted., Conclusion: Advancing transitional care is essential for tackling negative health outcomes. Background: To support self-management of chronically ill persons, innovative approaches of care practice are being developed. Unfortunately, many self-management supporting interventions struggle to achieve reliable and consistent improvements at various levels (patient, provider and healthcare system level). One possible strategy to facilitate translating theory into practice, is to consider the healthcare professionals' perspective prior to the development of new interventions. An exploration of their knowledge and opinion about barriers and facilitators is necessary before employing any self-management support (SMS) intervention. Therefore, our study aims to explore care professionals' perspectives about SMS within the Flemish primary care setting., Methods: This study used a qualitative study design to examine SMS in primary care setting. Five focus groups were conducted, grouped into three waves. Participants were healthcare professionals in Flanders representing different disciplines and settings. A maximum variation purposive sampling was used to recruit participants. For the data analysis, the framework of thematic networks by Attride-Stirling was applied., Results: A total of 34 healthcare professionals participated. Three global themes related to SMS were derived from the thematic analysis: (1) Characteristics, (2) Support strategies, (3) Barriers and facilitators. SMS was characterised as a collaboration-based and person-centred approach. A variety of supporting strategies were mentioned by the focus group participants. Most strategies consisted of informing and educating patients. Complementary to individual strategies, collaborative strategies were deemed necessary to support self-management. Regarding barriers and facilitators, different patient-related factors were identified. Additionally, competencies of healthcare providers and external factors seem to hinder the implementation of SMS in practice., Conclusions: This focus group study highlights the importance of a collaborative, person-centred approach to SMS in the context of chronic diseases. Our findings point to the need for interventions that raise awareness and address barriers associated with SMS. Objectives: Bedside handovers have the potential to provide opportunities to increase patient involvement in mental health care. Living with a chronic illness requires individuals to perform a critical role in self-managing their illness to improve their quality of life and prevent disease-related complications. To our knowledge, no studies have explored how individuals perceive managing their illness in daily living within the Asian context. This exploratory-descriptive qualitative study aimed to explore the individuals' perspectives regarding self-managing their life with a chronic illness within the Asian context. Individual interviews were conducted with 15 adults living with chronic illness, from three teaching hospitals in Pakistan. An iterative process was followed for data collection and analysis. The analysis identified self-management as complex and situation-driven with variable roles for individuals, namely follower, selective follower, self-permitting role, and active role. Three interrelated elements were found to be influencing these roles: the components of self-management; individuals' relationship with agencies (significant people and power); and their inner drives. Individuals keep moving between these four self-management roles to avoid disharmony and reciprocate the efforts of their significant others. The interdependent community structure, which is a reality in Asian society, was reflected in our data. With this in view, a great deal of authority was given to family relationships and healthcare professionals (HCPs). This study found a lack of collaborative partnership role between individuals and HCPs. The findings and a suggested conceptual figure can facilitate redefining the individuals' and professionals' roles in the healthcare system to promote collaborative partnership and improve individuals' experience of living with a chronic illness within the Asian context. Members of the research team have extensive experience in research around chronic illness management, and self-management (support) from the Western context. WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN?: The nurse-patient relationship in mental health care is an important focus of mental health nursing theories and research. There is limited evidence about which factors influence nurse-sensitive patient outcomes of the nurse-patient relationship. This hinders the development, planning, delivering, and quality assurance of the nurse-patient relationship in nursing practice and nursing education. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: To our best knowledge, this is the first study to examine associations between nurse-sensitive patient outcomes of the nurse-patient relationship and a range of patient characteristics and relationship-contextual factors. In this study, we found that gender, age, hospital characteristics, nurse availability when needed, nurse contact, and nurse stimulation were associated with the scores on the nurse-sensitive patient outcome scale. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE?: Having insight into the factors associated with nurse-sensitive patient outcomes of the nurse-patient relationship can help nurses, nursing students, nursing management and also patients to enhance the nurse-patient relationship, trying to influence outcomes of nursing care. ABSTRACT: Introduction The lack of evidence on patient characteristics and relational-contextual factors influencing nurse-sensitive patient outcomes of a nurse-patient relationship is a possible threat to the quality and education of the nurse-patient relationship. Aim To measure nurse-sensitive patient outcomes of the nurse-patient relationship and to explore the associations between nurse-sensitive patient outcomes and a range of patient characteristics and relational-contextual factors. Method In a multicenter cross-sectional study, 340 inpatients from 30 units in five psychiatric hospitals completed the Mental Health Nurse-Sensitive Patient Outcome Scale. Descriptive, univariate and Linear Mixed Model analyses were conducted. Results Overall, patient-reported outcomes were moderate to good. Female participants, nurse availability when needed, more nurse contact and nurse stimulation were associated with higher outcomes. Age differences were observed for some of the outcomes. Outcomes also varied across hospitals but were not related to the number of times patients were hospitalized or to their current length of stay in the hospital. Discussion The results may help nurses to become more sensitive and responsive to factors associated with nurse-sensitive patient outcomes of the nurse-patient relationship. Rationale: Due to the emergence of oral anticancer therapies, existing care processes in oncology - that are mainly focused on in-hospital treatments - must be rethought. The development of a care pathway is a well-known methodology to reorganise and standardise care for a specific patient group. However, care pathway development might be complex and burdensome for healthcare teams, requiring a well-thought-out methodology that provides guidance to the teams., Aims and Objectives: In 10 Belgian oncology departments, multidisciplinary teams developed a tailored care pathway, aimed to offer high-quality patient-centred care. Each department followed a cocreation methodology, consisting of a current practice assessment, a priority setting, and the actual development of the care pathway. The aim of this study was to investigate how and to which extent underperformed evidence-based key elements (KEs), identified in the current practice assessment, guided the development of the care pathway, and how compliant the final care pathways are with the list of evidence-based KEs., Methods: A qualitative content analysis was conducted to describe and compare the results of each phase of the cocreation methodology., Results: This study shows that much of the evidence and feedback on current practice that was used as a starting point, got lost throughout the cocreation process. Only a limited proportion of the (seriously) underperformed KEs were prioritised by the multidisciplinary teams. Furthermore, several prioritised KEs could not be retrieved in the care pathway documents. Also, the final care pathways were not fully compliant with existing evidence., Conclusion: Based on the findings, a more rigorous cocreation methodology seems needed, offering very concrete support for multidisciplinary teams to integrate the prioritised KEs in the care process (e.g., by using a model care pathway). Background: Although support is needed, no method exists to elicit and integrate personal goals into medication optimization interventions for nursing home residents., Aim: To develop and evaluate a tool to (1) elicit and evaluate residents' personal goals during medication optimization, and (2) elicit involvement preferences regarding medication decision-making., Method: A draft was composed by the research team, on which feedback was collected through four focus groups with healthcare professionals (n = 23) and pilot interviews with residents (n = 6). The tool was then pilot tested in 11 nursing homes as means to facilitate person-centered medication reviews, focusing on feasibility, appropriateness, and meaningfulness. Evaluation was performed through interviews and focus groups with residents and healthcare professionals, and reports for executed medication reviews. Interview summaries and reports were analyzed inductively., Results: The RESident's Participation in the Evaluation and Customization of Therapy tool (RESPECT-tool) was drafted as a modular approach of five modules. Pilot study results showed that the tool supported the formulation of personal goals. Goals resulted in changes in all aspects of the nursing home stay, indicating the tool's potential to promote person-centered care. The RESPECT-tool showed value in the context of medication optimization as it allowed to determine potential links between residents' personal goals and medication plans, and its use regularly led to medication changes., Conclusion: A person-centered medication review facilitated by the RESPECT-tool holds a promising approach to medication optimization in nursing homes. Background: Patients have an important role in the improvement of their health. Patient participation is a key component to achieving this. Some form of patient participation is already present in home care, but this needs to be optimised., Aim: Gaining insight into the expectations, experiences and needs of patients regarding patient participation in home care., Design: A qualitative design was used., Setting: The study was conducted in the Flemish part of Belgium, in a purposeful sample of patients who have already received nursing care at home for at least 6 weeks., Methods: Semi-structured face-to-face in-depth interviews were conducted and analysed using the Qualitative Analyse Guide of Leuven., Results: Patient participation in home care is a dynamic process. A total of six components, which interact with each other, were identified that explain this process., Conclusion: Patient participation in home care is the interaction of different components of a whole mechanism. Within this mechanism, home nurses play a key role to facilitate participation for patients.

Objective: To develop a self-management instrument for organ transplant recipients that incorporates self-regulations skills and to determine its measurement properties., Methods: The instrument includes concepts from social cognitive models: problem awareness, attitude, self-efficacy, motivation, social support, goal setting, goal pursuit, skills and goal affect. The measurement properties were evaluated based on the COSMIN guidelines. Face and content validity were determined through patient assessment, Three-Step Test-Interview and expert assessment using the Content Validity Index. Structural validity and reliability were tested using exploratory factor analysis and Cronbach's alpha. Construct validity was tested by comparing subscales with the Health Education Impact Questionnaire (heiQ)., Results: After face and content validity assessment 47 items were entered into the exploratory factor analysis. The analysis showed two meaningful factors, with internal consistency of 0.90 and 0.89. Spearman correlations between the subscales and heiQ were moderate (0.55; 0.46). Objective: In this multicenter cross-sectional study, the quality of patient-centered education and counseling for patients treated with oral anticancer drugs was examined., Methods: The CONTACT-Patient-Centered Care Questionnaire was administered to 266 patients, recruited in 11 Flemish hospitals. The questionnaire consists of 80 items, each evaluating the degree of performance of a key element in patient-centered education and counseling., Results: In total, 15 key elements were seriously underperformed (degree of performance < 50%). Elements regarding adherence monitoring, specific topics in patient education, and involvement of the community pharmacist and home care nurse received a very low score. Objective: During autonomy-supportive consultations, professionals use a need-supportive interaction style to facilitate patients' self-regulated behaviour. To improve maternity care professionals' need-supportive interactions, it is important to provide insights into their interaction style. No tool is currently available for measuring need-supportive interactions in maternity care. Therefore, the aim of this study was to adapt the COUNSEL-CCE to evaluate need-supportive interactions in maternity care and to validate their measurements., Methods: A five-step adaptation and validation process was performed based on the guideline of Sousa and Rojjanasrirat: 1) adaptation of COUNSEL-CCE by two authors independently; 2) development of a consensus-based tool: CONSUL-MCC; 3) qualitative assessment of CONSUL-MCC; 4) pilot testing of CONSUL-MCC in the target population ( N  = 10) and 5) psychometric testing in the target population ( N  = 453)., Results: All indicators of the original tool remained relevant. Four items were rephrased, one indicator was added, and all examples were adapted to maternity care. The results of psychometric testing indicated good construct validity. Patients who take oral anticancer drugs (OACD) alternate between the hospital and the community setting. Little is known about how general practitioners (GPs) and community pharmacists (CPs) from primary care (PC) can be involved in providing seamless care. In an exploratory qualitative study, semi-structured interviews with healthcare professionals from primary and secondary care (SC) and ( N = 26) were performed to investigate perceptions of seamless collaboration for patients on OACD. Seamless collaboration initiated by SC was restricted to informing GPs about treatment-initiation and delegating limited tasks to them in treatment monitoring. CPs are currently not informed by SC about the treatment. PC expressed willingness for seamless collaboration. However, collaboration is currently impeded due to an expressed lack of trust and desire for control by SC. Moreover, SC expressed unfamiliarity with the organization of PC. Findings suggest that healthcare professionals from SC and PC need to get to know each other and to discuss expectations in the seamless care for patients on OACD. A possible strategy is to elaborate a shared care model based on a partnership between PC and SC, in which the specific expertise of each partner contributes to patient-centered care and the qualitative and safe use of OACD.

Objective: To provide an overview of types and characteristics of self-management support (SMS) interventions in adults with chronic disease and to assess the impact on the patient reported outcome Quality of Life (QoL)., Methods: An umbrella review of systematic reviews was conducted. We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL and the Cochrane Library from January 2016 to November 2020 for reviews on SMS interventions for chronic diseases, assessing the impact on the patient reported outcome QoL. Quality assessment was based on the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for Systematic reviews and Research Syntheses tool., Results: 28 reviews were included. The extensive literature review revealed a variety of SMS interventions. The most frequently cited target group for the interventions were individuals with diabetes. Interventions primarily took place in the home setting. Interventional components that were often incorporated were education, eHealth and mHealth technologies, and coaching techniques. Telephone communication was regularly reported as a type of intervention follow-up. The impact on QoL was mixed and no firm conclusions can be drawn. However, our review revealed a beneficial effect of education., Conclusions and Practical Implications: Interventions including educational components seem promising for supporting self-management and showed a beneficial effect on QoL. Objective: To develop and evaluate a tool to inform and empower nursing home (NH) residents and informal caregivers regarding the medicines' pathway., Methods: Feedback on the tool's text, drafted by the research team, was collected from a professional organization; the lay-out was designed by an illustrator. The tool was pilot tested in NHs, focusing on feasibility, appropriateness, and meaningfulness. Semi-structured interviews and focus groups with residents, informal caregivers, and healthcare professionals were performed, as well as document analysis. Qualitative data were analyzed inductively., Results: The RESPECT-brochure was developed and described each process of the medicines' pathway. Piloting showed that the tool was well perceived among residents and informal caregivers and offered opportunities to discuss medication-related questions and concerns, but that skills to tailor the conversation, especially given the changing NH population, a matching vision and local champion are required for the tool's uptake., Conclusion: An informative and empowering tool has been successfully developed and pilot tested in NHs. Purpose: To provide in-depth insight in stakeholders' experiences with the self-directed co-creation of a care pathway for patients treated with oral anticancer drugs, and to identify influencing factors for the success of the co-creation process that are persistent throughout the prior pilot phase and the scale-up phase., Methods: This qualitative process evaluation was performed in 11 Belgian oncology departments participating in a scale-up project. Semi-structured interviews with local coordinators (n = 13) and members of the project teams (n = 19), responsible for the co-creation of the care pathway, were conducted. Data were thematically analyzed., Results: Despite the external support (including group-level coaching and the use of well-defined supportive tools) to promote self-directedness, the co-creation process was perceived burdensome. Three influencing factors were persistent throughout the pilot and scale-up phase: a) shared leadership among the coordinator, physician and hospital management, b) an intrinsically motivated team driven by additional extrinsic factors, and c) a balance between external support and self-directedness., Conclusion: This study shows that the self-directed co-creation of a care pathway is feasible on the condition that important prerequisites are met, including shared leadership and team motivation. More concrete tools, such as a model care pathway, seem needed to increase feasibility of the self-directed co-creation of the care pathway. Yet, these tools should allow tailoring to the specific hospital context. WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Psychiatric and/or mental health nurses are struggling to measure the outcomes of the nurse-patient relationship. Collecting nurse-sensitive patient outcomes is a strategy to provide outcomes of a nurse-patient relationship from patients' perspectives. Because there was no validated scale, the Mental Health Nurse-Sensitive Patient Outcome-Scale (six-point Likert-scale) was recently developed and psychometrically evaluated. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: This is the first study using the Mental Health Nurse-Sensitive Patient Outcome-scale to measure nurse-sensitive patient outcomes of the nurse-patient relationship in psychiatric hospitals. Moderate to good average scores for the MH-NURSE-POS total (4.42) and domains scores (≥4.09). are observed. Especially outcomes related to 'motivation' to follow and stay committed to the treatment received high average scores (≥4.60). Our results are consistent with the patient-reported effect(s) of relation-based nursing in qualitative research. The scores generate evidence to support the outcomes of the nurse-patient relationship and implicates that further investment in (re)defining and elaborating nurse-patient relationships in mental healthcare is meaningful and justified. More comparative patient-reported data can determine how nurse-sensitive patient outcomes are affected by the patient, nurse, and context. Background: Information on how residents and their informal caregivers are involved in the medicines' pathway in nursing homes is scarce. Likewise, it is not known how they would prefer to be involved therein., Methods: A generic qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with 17 residents and 10 informal caregivers from four nursing homes was performed. Interview transcripts were analyzed using an inductive thematic framework., Results: Four themes were derived to describe resident and informal caregiver involvement in the medicines' pathway. First, residents and informal caregivers show behaviors of involvement across the medicines' pathway. Second, their attitude towards involvement was mainly one of resignation, but variation was noted in their involvement preferences, ranging from minimal information to active participation needs. Third, institutional and personal factors were found to contribute to the resigned attitude. Last, situations were identified that drive residents and informal caregivers to act, regardless of their resigned attitude., Conclusions: Resident and informal caregiver involvement in the medicines' pathway is limited. Nevertheless, interviews show that information and participation needs are present and show potential for residents' and informal caregivers' contribution to the medicines' pathway. Future research should explore initiatives to increase the understanding and acknowledgement of opportunities for involvement and to empower residents and informal caregivers to take on their roles.

Introduction: Due to the increased prevalence of chronic conditions, multimorbidity and an increased complexity of care, the burden on healthcare teams is high resulting in unmet needs of patients and their family and a high workload on healthcare professionals. To respond to these challenges, care models integrating nurse practitioners were introduced. Despite the proven benefits, implementation in Belgium is at an early stage. The aim of this study is to develop, implement and evaluate nurse practitioner roles in a Belgian university hospital. Insights into development and implementation processes can inform healthcare managers and policymakers for future (nationwide) implementation., Methods and Analysis: For the development, implementation and (process-)evaluation of nurse practitioner roles in three departments in a Belgian university hospital, a participatory action research approach involving interdisciplinary teams of healthcare professionals, healthcare managers and researchers will be used. To investigate the effectiveness at patient (eg, quality of care), healthcare providers (eg, team effectiveness) and organisational level (eg, utility) a longitudinal (matched controlled) pre-post mixed methods study will be set up. Quantitative data (surveys, data from electronic patient files, administrative files) will be analysed using SPSS V.28.0. Qualitative data will be collected throughout the whole process and will consist of the meetings, (focus group) interviews and field notes. All qualitative data will be analysed thematically both across-case and within-case. Aims and Objectives: The aim was to explore the information and counselling needs of rectal cancer survivors confronted with major low anterior resection syndrome., Background: Rectal cancer survivors are often confronted with bowel problems after surgery. This is called low anterior resection syndrome. Patients are unsure what to expect after treatment and healthcare professionals often underestimate the impact of low anterior resection syndrome on patients' lives., Design: A qualitative study with a grounded theory approach was conducted., Methods: Patients were recruited between 2017 and 2019 in three hospitals, and a call was distributed in two patients' organisations. Semi-structured interviews with patients confronted with major low anterior resection syndrome were performed. An iterative process between data collection and data analysis was used. Data analysis was done using the constant comparative method, and investigators' triangulation was applied. Qualitative data were reported following COREQ guidelines. The study was registered at Clinicaltrials.gov NCT04896879., Results: A total of 28 patients were interviewed until theoretical data saturation. Before surgery patients' need for information varied according to their individual coping mechanisms. Some patients required information before surgery, while others considered this too overwhelming. When confronted with LARS, patients desired that healthcare professionals recognised its impact and clarified its expected evolution. Objective: Pain is prevalent among breast cancer survivors and can persist for years, impeding quality of life. Both prevention and pain treatment are important. However, this requires an interdisciplinary approach and complex models of care. We report on the design and implementation of an intervention that follows a step-wise care model, aimed at timely and adequate pain follow-up among breast cancer survivors., Methods: We used intervention mapping to guide our planning process. The intervention was developed in co-design with relevant stakeholders, such as breast cancer survivors and healthcare providers., Results: An e-learning training was developed aimed at changing healthcare providers' knowledge, beliefs, and interprofessional behaviour regarding pain follow-up. Second, guides were produced to empower patients in talking about pain and stimulate referral to other disciplines., Conclusion: To achieve change in pain follow-up, multiple levels should be addressed. Additionally, the implementation and adoption of an intervention opposes challenges. Purpose: Exploring the persisting presence of underlying processes, dynamics, experienced barriers and facilitators of Advanced Practice Nurses (APN) in oncology and Oncology Nurse Navigators (ONN) during their role integration in an interprofessional team over a research period of seven years., Methods: A qualitative study based on the principles of Grounded Theory, in which individual semi-structured interviews and focus groups were conducted with 51 ONN and APN from 11 university and local hospitals in Belgium between 2011-2018. Data were analyzed to develop a framework that consists of different themes., Results: ONN and APN experienced a lonely journey during role integration. They were searching for partners, medical knowledge and acknowledgement from the interprofessional team. ONN and APN had a watchful attitude and tried to make themselves visible to ensure they were involved in the team and to preserve their role and responsibilities. An unclear role description to the interprofessional team, and a lack of coaching and guidance were influencing factors in the experience of ONN and APN., Conclusion: ONN and APN in oncology feel difficulties to integrate their role in existing interprofessional teams. A lack of role clarity, the interprofessional team environment and a desire for coaching and guidance are influencing factors to implement APN roles. Coaching and mentorship of novice ONN/APN and their interprofessional team and healthcare managers are needed to address these issues. Aims and Objectives: Gaining insight in how people living with chronic conditions experience primary healthcare within their informal network., Background: The primary healthcare system is challenged by the increasing number of people living with chronic conditions. To strengthen chronic care management, literature and policy plans point to a person-centred approach of care (PCC). A first step to identify an appropriate strategy to implement PCC is to gain more insight into the care experiences of these people and their informal caregivers., Design: A phenomenological-hermeneutical philosophy is used. The study is in line with the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research Guidelines (COREQ)., Method: In-depth, semi-structured interviews with people living with chronic conditions and informal caregiver dyads (PCDs) (n = 16; 32 individuals) were conducted. An open-ended interview guide was used to elaborate on the PCDs' experiences regarding primary care. A purposive, maximal variation sampling was applied to recruit the participants., Results: Based on sixteen PCDs' reflections, ten themes were identified presenting their experiences with primary care and described quality care as listening and giving attention to what people with chronic conditions want, to what they strive for, and above all to promote their autonomy in a context wherein they are supported by a team of formal caregivers, family and friends., Conclusion: To meet the PCDs' needs, self-management should be addressed in an interprofessional environment in which the PCD is an important partner. The findings may facilitate a shift to encourage PCDs in their strengths by enabling them to share their personal goals and by working towards meaningful activities in team collaboration., Relevance to Clinical Practice: Three strategies-self-management support, goal-oriented care, and interprofessional collaboration-have been suggested to improve the PCDs' primary care experiences. Background: Emerging evidence shows a positive impact of physical activity (PA) on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in cancer patients. However, longitudinal evidence on PA and HRQoL in patients with bladder cancer (BC) undergoing radical cystectomy (RC) is lacking., Objectives: To investigate PA levels, HRQoL outcomes and their relationship from diagnosis to one year after RC in BC patients., Methods: A longitudinal cohort study in 90 BC patients was conducted at Ghent and Leuven University Hospitals between April 2017 and December 2020. The Godin Leisure-Time Exercise Questionnaire (GLTEQ) and the EORTC QLQ-C30 and BLM30 were used to measure PA and HRQoL, respectively, before RC, one, three, six and twelve months after RC. Linear mixed models were used for statistical analyses., Results: The majority was physically inactive before RC (58%), at month one (79%), three (53%), six (61%) and twelve (64%). Among (moderately) active patients, light-intensity activities (mainly walking) were important contributors to the total amount of PA. Clinically important and low HRQoL outcomes in different domains were identified with lowest scores at diagnosis and one month after RC. Active patients before RC have better physical functioning (mean difference (MD) -22.7, standard error (SE) 8.7, p  = 0.011), global health status (MD -15.9, SE 6.9, p  = 0.023) and fatigue (MD 19.9, SE 9.5, p  = 0.038) one month after RC, compared to inactive patients. Active patients at month have better physical functioning (MD -16.2, SE 6.9, p  = 0.023) and sexual functioning (MD -16.8, SE 5.4, p  = 0.003; MD -13.5, SE 5.5, p  = 0.017) at month six and twelve, respectively, compared to inactive patients., Conclusions: Higher PA levels are associated with better HRQoL outcomes for BC patients undergoing RC. Aim: To explore the perception of mental healthcare workers about participation of inpatients during multidisciplinary team meetings (MTMs) and to determine which demographic and contextual factors are associated with this perception., Methods: A cross-sectional multicentre study in 17 psychiatric hospitals with 701 mental healthcare workers was performed between 29 April and 19 May 2019. For measuring the perception of the mental healthcare workers, the Patient Participation during Multidisciplinary Team meetings Questionnaire was used., Results: 93 % of the mental healthcare workers indicate that they are willing to allow patients to participate in a MTM. Most mental healthcare workers prefer an active role for the patient when participating in a MTM (93 %) and a collaborative role for the patient when making decisions in a MTM (75 %). Level of education, discipline, experience with patient participation in MTMs, working in a team where patient participation is applied, and recent training on patient participation, are associated with the mental healthcare worker's perception on patient participation in MTMs., Conclusion: Mental healthcare workers report a great willingness to involve inpatients in MTMs. However, social workers, nurses, and pedagogues feel less competent and are less positive about the effects of patient participation in MTMs. Mental healthcare workers with recent training in patient participation and experience in patient participation in MTMs feel more competent and believe more often that the patient should fulfil a more autonomous role when participating in a MTM. Purpose: To investigate factors affecting the co-creation and implementation of care pathways for patients treated with oral anticancer drugs., Methods: An explorative qualitative process evaluation was performed at four Belgian hospitals, co-creating and implementing a care pathway for patients on oral anticancer drugs. Semistructured interviews and focus groups were performed by a) local coordinators leading an interprofessional project team during the co-creation and implementation stage, b) external implementation coaches, and c) teams of healthcare professionals with a role in the care pathway. In total, 47 stakeholders were interviewed. Interviews were audio-taped, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed thematically., Results: We found four factors affecting co-creation and implementation of care pathways for patients on oral anticancer drugs. Developing an adequate supporting context using motivated interprofessional project teams of clinical and management staff led by competent coordinators is one important facilitator. Leadership of local coordinators and oncologists is crucial for progressing the co-creation. Other factors included the complexity of the oral anticancer drug intervention, the interprofessional character of the care pathway, and involving primary care. External coaching during co-creation proved an important facilitator., Conclusions: Prior investigation of willingness and motivation to change in clinical and management staff, competent coordinators, and leadership of oncologists are needed. Aims: To provide in-depth insight into how patients and their relatives experienced change or delay in cancer treatment and care due to COVID-19., Design: A qualitative study including semi-structured interviews with patients with cancer and their relatives., Methods: Between July and October 2020, 42 patients who were confronted with a change or delay in cancer treatment or care, and 11 relatives were interviewed. Data collection and analysis were performed according to the most important methods of grounded theory, including iterative data collection and analysis, theoretical sampling, constant comparative analysis and theoretical sensitivity., Results: This study shows that patients with cancer and relatives experienced paradoxical feelings when confronted with change or delay in treatment or care due to COVID-19. Patients and relatives felt relieved (e.g. less risk of infection), but were also concerned and anxious (e.g. fear for progression, fear for more side effects). Due to these ambivalent feelings, it was difficult for patients and relatives to cope with the change or delay in treatment or care, both when this was decided by the physician and by themselves. In combination with the general impact of COVID-19 on their daily lives, the change or delay led to additional distress. The interviews showed that exploring the meaning of change or delay of care for patients and their relatives and discussing what would help them might prevent or relieve distress., Conclusion: The findings of our study show that COVID-19 and the associated delay or changes in cancer treatment and care had a major impact on the well-being of patients and their relatives. Objective: Instruments to measure quality of patient-centred care (PCC) for the rapidly growing population of patients treated with oral anticancer drugs (OACD) are lacking. The aim of this study was to develop a valid and reliable instrument to assess PCC in the context of OACD., Methods: The CONTACT-Patient-Centred Care Questionnaire (CONTACT-PCCQ) was developed based on a validated set of key elements (KEs) for patient-centred education and counselling in patients taking OACD, and face validity was evaluated by means of cognitive interviews. In 16 Belgian hospitals, adult patients treated with OACD were asked to complete the questionnaire. Construct validity was investigated through exploratory factor analyses (EFAs) and internal consistency of the subscales was examined using Cronbach's alpha., Results: The initial 86-item instrument was completed by 464 patients. Each EFA confirmed the a priori PCC-based structure of the subscales. However, EFA revealed more than one factor for two of the subscales. Therefore, multiple subsections within these subscales were created. Based on factor loadings and item content, six items were removed. This resulted in a final 80-item instrument with seven subscales and five subsections. Cronbach's alpha for the subscales and subsections ranged between 0.732 and 0.918, which implies adequate internal consistency., Conclusion: A final instrument with 80 items divided into seven subscales, covering all six dimensions of PCC, was obtained. Aim: To evaluate the process and outcomes of INTENSS, a training intervention grounded in Self-Determination Theory to enhance nurses' competencies for self-management support., Design: Non-randomized intervention study with mixed-methods evaluation approach (2019-2020)., Methods: The multifaceted training was implemented in six groups. Cluster-assignment to study arm 1 or arm 2. Arm 1 received a basic training module and arm 2 the basic module with additional video-interaction guidance. Focus groups were held to detect what was helpful in competency enhancement. Intervention effectiveness was determined on trainees' attitude, motivation, self-efficacy and skills for self-management support (multiple time-points by self-reports and observations)., Results: Trainees (N = 50) indicated the video-interaction guidance, the connectivity within the training group, the constructive feedback from trainers as well as from peers, as helpful for the acquisition of self-management support skills. At 2-month post-training, participants slightly improved in their competencies for the assess (p = .03), agree (p = .02), arrange (p < .01) phase and partnership skills (p < .01). Between the study arms, video-trained participants significantly reduced their use of controlling approaches (p = .03). Observations indicated that trainees mostly used an autonomy-supportive approach, seldom we observed the use of competence supportive, controlling or chaotic approaches. The interviews gave indications that obligatory training in this field needs to be questioned., Conclusion: The outcome evaluation of the INTENNS training indicated most improvement in nurses' skills for collaborative goal setting and partnership with patients. The mixed-methods evaluation emerges transferable principles to implement the training amongst nurses and, by extension, other healthcare professions. A training intervention involving patient experts can add value to further pave the way towards a true partnership between patients and healthcare professionals., Impact: A training intervention taking into account the complexity of supporting patients towards self-management is available. Important elements for growth are: connectivity within training group, a safe learning climate where 'failure' is allowed and video-interaction guidance. Introduction: Overdiagnosis is the diagnosis of a disease that would never have caused any symptom or problem. It is a harmful side effect of screening and may lead to unnecessary treatment, costs and emotional drawbacks. Doctors and other healthcare professionals (HCPs) have the opportunity to mitigate these consequences, not only by informing their patients or the public but also by adjusting screening methods or even by refraining from screening. However, it is unclear to what extent HCPs are fully aware of overdiagnosis and whether it affects their screening decisions. With this systematic review, we aim to synthesise all available research about what HCPs know and think about overdiagnosis, how it affects their position on screening policy and whether they think patients and the public should be informed about it., Methods and Analysis: We will systematically search several databases (MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, CINAHL and PsycArticles) for studies that directly examine HCPs' knowledge and subjective perceptions of overdiagnosis due to health screening, both qualitatively and quantitatively. We will optimise our search by scanning reference and citation lists, contacting experts in the field and hand searching abstracts from the annual conference on 'Preventing Overdiagnosis'. After selection and quality appraisal, we will analyse qualitative and quantitative findings separately in a segregated design for mixed-method reviews. The data will be examined and presented descriptively. If the retrieved studies allow it, we will review them from a constructivist perspective through a critical interpretive synthesis., Ethics and Dissemination: For this type of research, no ethical approval is required. Background: There has been an exponential growth in the availability of apps, resulting in increased use of pregnancy apps. However, information on resources and use of apps among pregnant women is relatively limited., Objective: The aim of this study is to map the current information resources and the use of pregnancy apps among pregnant women in Flanders., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted, using a semistructured survey (April-June 2019) consisting of four different domains: (1) demographics; (2) use of devices; (3) sources of information; and (4) use of pregnancy apps. Women were recruited by social media, flyers, and paper questionnaires at prenatal consultations. Statistical analysis was mainly focused on descriptive statistics. Differences in continuous and categorical variables were tested using independent Student t tests and chi-square tests. Correlations were investigated between maternal characteristics and the women's responses., Results: In total, 311 women completed the entire questionnaire. Obstetricians were the primary source of information (268/311, 86.2%) for pregnant women, followed by websites/internet (267/311, 85.9%) and apps (233/311, 74.9%). The information that was most searched for was information about the development of the baby (275/311, 88.5%), discomfort/complaints (251/311, 80.7%) and health during pregnancy (248/311, 79.7%), administrative/practical issues (233/311, 74.9%), and breastfeeding (176/311, 56.6%). About half of the women (172/311, 55.3%) downloaded a pregnancy app, and primarily searched app stores (133/311, 43.0%). Pregnant women who are single asked their mothers (22/30, 73.3%) or other family members (13/30, 43.3%) for significantly more information than did married women (mother [in law]: 82/160, 51.3%, P=.02; family members: 35/160, 21.9%, P=.01). Pregnant women with lower education were significantly more likely to have a PC or laptop than those with higher education (72/73, 98.6% vs 203/237, 85.5%; P=.008), and to consult other family members for pregnancy information (30/73, 41.1% vs 55/237, 23.1%; P<.001), but were less likely to consult a gynecologist (70/73, 95.9% vs 198/237, 83.5%; P=.001). They also followed more prenatal sessions (59/73, 80.8% vs 77/237, 32.5%; P=.04) and were more likely to search for information regarding discomfort/complaints during pregnancy (65/73, 89% vs 188/237, 79.5%; P=.02). Compared to multigravida, primigravida were more likely to solicit advice about their pregnancy from other women in their social networks (family members: primigravida 44/109, 40.4% vs multigravida 40/199, 20.1%; P<.001; other pregnant women: primigravida 58/109, 53.2% vs multigravida 80/199, 40.2%; P<.03)., Conclusions: Health care professionals need to be aware that apps are important and are a growing source of information for pregnant women. Concerns rise about the quality and safety of those apps, as only a limited number of apps are subjected to an external quality check. Objective: This scoping review aimed to identify patient goal elicitation and evaluation methods for older adults, and to investigate which methods can be used in medication optimization interventions for nursing home residents (NHRs)., Methods: The Arksey and O'Malley framework guided the review. A search was launched in PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and Web of Science. Reference selection and data extraction were performed by three independent reviewers, followed by team discussions to solve discrepancies. Inductive thematic analysis was applied to synthesize the data. Included papers were reconsidered to identify methods for medication optimization interventions for NHRs., Results: Ninety-six references, encompassing 38 elicitation and 12 evaluation methods, were included. Elicitation methods differed in structure, content, and patient involvement levels. Qualitative and quantitative methods were found to assess goal attainment. Five elicitation and three evaluation methods were developed for NHRs, but none of these contained a medication-related assessment., Conclusion: A variety of goal elicitation and evaluation methods for older adults was found, but none for medication optimization interventions in NHRs., Practice Implications: A holistic approach seems important to integrate patient goals into medication optimization interventions, not limiting goal elicitation to a medication-related assessment. The COVID-19 pandemic has posed tremendous challenges to healthcare systems. Care for oncology patients, a vulnerable population during the pandemic, was disrupted and drastically changed. A multicenter qualitative study was conducted in 11 Belgian hospitals with the aim to provide an overview of the most important changes that were made in the care of oncology patients in Belgium. In each hospital, a nurse or physician was interviewed by telephone. Two rounds of structured interviews-during the first and second waves of the pandemic-were conducted. The data were analyzed using content analysis. The impact of COVID-19 on care practices for patients with cancer was enormous during the first wave. Major changes, including good but also less patient-centered practices, were implemented with unprecedented speed. After the initial wave, regular care was resumed and only limited new care practices were maintained. In only a few hospitals, healthcare teams reflected on lessons learned and on the maintenance of good practices that came from the COVID-19 experience. As a result, opportunities for healthcare innovation and quality improvement seemed to be missed. Our recommendations aim to support policymakers, hospital managers, and healthcare professionals to learn from the COVID-19 pandemic and to drive patient-centered initiatives in future cancer care.

Background: Patient-centred care has been recognised as vital for today's healthcare quality. This type of care puts patients at the centre, contributing to positive patient outcomes such as patient autonomy. Empirical research comparing nurses' and patients' perceptions of the support and provision of patient-centred care is limited and focuses solely on nurses and patients working and staying on surgical wards., Aims and Objectives: Comparing patients' and nurses' perceptions of patient-centred care on different types of hospital wards, and exploring if patient empowerment, health literacy, and certain sociodemographic and context-related variables are associated with these perceptions., Design: Cross-sectional design., Methods: Data were collected in ten Flemish (February-June 2016) and two Dutch (December 2014-May 2015) hospitals using the Individualised Care Scale (ICS). A linear mixed model was fitted. Data from 845 patients and 569 nurses were analysed. As the ICS was used to measure the concept of patient-centred care, it is described using the term 'individualised care.', Results: Nurses perceived that they supported and provided individualised care more compared with patients as they scored significantly higher on the ICS compared with patients. Patients with higher empowerment scores, higher health literacy, a degree lower than bachelor, a longer hospital stay, and patients who were employed and who were admitted to Dutch hospitals scored significantly higher on some of the ICS subscales/subsections. Nurses who were older and more experienced and those working in Dutch hospitals, regional hospitals and maternity wards scored significantly higher on some of the ICS subscales/subsections., Conclusion: Nurses perceived that they supported and provided individualised care more compared with patients., Relevance to Clinical Practice: Creating a shared understanding towards the support and provision of individualised care should be a priority as this could generate more effective nursing care that takes into account the individuality of the patient., (© 2021 Nordic College of Caring Science.)

Aim: Many patients are confronted with low anterior resection syndrome after rectal surgery. The perspectives of both healthcare professionals and patients on the impact of bowel problems may differ. This study aimed to explore experiences of healthcare professionals on how to provide, organise and optimise care for patients with low anterior resection syndrome from an interprofessional perspective., Methods: An explorative qualitative design was used. Healthcare professionals were recruited in October 2018 in one general teaching hospital and one university hospital. Twenty one healthcare professionals from different professions caring for patients with low anterior resection syndrome were included in three focus group interviews., Results: Healthcare professionals confirmed a lack of focus on patients who are confronted with low anterior resection syndrome and stated a need for a standardised approach of care. Additionally, three levels for care optimization emerged from the data: information before surgery with strong emphasis on the timing of informing, counselling of patients when confronted with low anterior resection syndrome and organisation of care., Conclusions: Healthcare professionals find it important to adopt the moment and amount of information to the coping mechanism and timing of the trajectory. Counselling and follow-up of patients with LARS should be organised proactively and should not remain restricted to pharmacological and nutritional advice. Background: The prevention and treatment of chronic pain problems in breast cancer follow-up care require an adequate response from healthcare providers. Generally, this involves the uptake of evidence-based principles regarding pain management in everyday practice. However, despite the extensive literature on effective pain interventions, systematic and coordinated follow-up care is lacking for breast cancer survivors with pain problems in Flanders, Belgium., Objective: This study aimed to gather insight into healthcare providers' perceptions of pain prevention and treatment in breast cancer follow-up care, particularly with attention to the multilevel influences on pain follow-up., Methods: We conducted four online focus groups with twenty-two healthcare providers from different disciplines such as oncologists, pharmacists, nurses, physiotherapists, and psychologists. Data analysis was guided by the Qualitative Analysis Guide of Leuven. This guide is inspired by the constant comparison method, based on Grounded Theory., Results: The identified influencing factors were thematically grouped into four levels: at the level of the individual healthcare provider, in interaction with the patient, in interaction with colleagues, and at the context level. At each level, we distinguished factors related to healthcare providers' perceptions such as awareness, knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, experiences, and intentions. For example, because of a lack of knowledge and certain beliefs among healthcare providers, referral to other disciplines often does not happen in the context of pain., Conclusion: This study points out the need to explore the prevention and treatment of chronic pain after breast cancer from a multidimensional point of view. This involves not only the characteristics of individual healthcare providers but is also inherently interactional and system-like in nature. Aim: To gain insight into which elements of the interpersonal care relationship (IPCR) are perceived as occurring (less) frequently and as (not) disturbing from the perspective of hospitalized older patients., Design: A cross-sectional study in three Belgian hospitals., Methods: A convenience sample of patients aged 75 years or older admitted to a non-geriatric ward were recruited between May 2017 and April 2019. The Interpersonal Geriatric care relationship (InteGer) tool was used to identify elements of the IPCR and was completed by the researchers through structured patient interviews., Results: The mean total scale score for frequency was 3.74 (SD 1.51) [range 0-12]. On subscale level, the highest mean score was in the accessibility and the lowest mean score in the humanization subscale. Statistically significant differences between the hypothesized and experienced disturbance were observed in 18 of the 30 items. Ten items score in the category 'no action needed' (not occurring, not disturbing), nine items in the category 'remain attentive for patient experiences' (occurring, not disturbing), 10 items in the category 'further analyses or monitoring needed' (not occurring, disturbing) and one item in the category 'urgent action needed' (occurring and disturbing)., Conclusion: Participants report mostly positive experiences related to the four subscales of the InteGer, that is, humanization, attentiveness, interest and accessibility. Information on interprofessional team composition and functioning in the care for patients on oral anticancer drugs (OACDs), and how healthcare professionals (HCPs) evaluate in-hospital care processes is scarce. We aimed to investigate interprofessional care processes for OACD-patients in a partially mixed-methods study. A combination of (a) the CareProces Self-Evaluation Tool (CPSET), completed by HCP-team members by health profession who were either currently involved in care processes (oncologists and nurses) or potentially involved in future care (pharmacists, psychologists, social workers), and by hospital managers ( N = 87) and (b) semi-structured interviews in a subsample of oncologists, nursing staff, and pharmacists ( N = 26) were used. Care process coordination was evaluated poorly, mainly by nurses, pharmacists, and psychologists. Nurses and pharmacists believed that they were not engaged in the organization of OACD care, lacked role clarity, and perceived no meaningful interprofessional practice. HCPs had different perceptions toward timing and planning of patient education and follow-up. Monitoring of care processes occurred only occasionally and was unstructured resulting in apoor complication-management and variance within care processes. Care processes for OACD-patients showed opportunities for optimization of interprofessional practice in timing, planning, and monitoring. Rethinking care processes through co-design is needed.

ObjectivesInterdisciplinary bedside rounds is gaining ground as a method to improve patient centredness and involvement, quality of care and team collaboration. An exploratory study was conducted in Flemish hospitals to (1) map and (2) examine the current form of rounds and the extent to which these were bedside, patient and family participatory and interdisciplinary.MethodsIn February 2020, a quantitative cross-sectional self-reporting web-based survey was conducted in 23 hospitals in Flanders, 213 head nurses of 213 wards completed the survey. A self-reporting 19-item questionnaire was developed in Lime Survey®. The questionnaire contained a mix of closed-ended questions an open-ended questions. The data were analysed using SPSS 26.0.ResultsMost of the wards in Flanders organise a form of daily rounds at the bedside. In only half of the wards these rounds are organised at a fixed time. The rounds most often include a physician and a nurse. Other disciplines are rarely actively involved. Only a minority of wards uses checklists, structures or protocols to standardise the rounds. The majority of the wards reports that patients (and family) get sufficient time to ask questions and say they are actively stimulated to do so.ConclusionIn current practice, most rounds are (partially) bedside, open for patient and family participatory and often include only a physician and a nurse. However, these elements of interdisciplinary rounds are not yet well integrated and vary strongly amongst ward. Most rounds should be considered as an extended form of physician rounds, rather than being interdisciplinary.
