Metalo hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (MHOFs) have received growing interest in designing crystalline functional materials. However, reports on bifunctional MHOFs showing magnetic and proton-conductive properties are extremely limited and their design is challenging. Herein, we investigated the magnetic and proton-conductive properties of two sulfonated CoHOF and MnHOF , {M(H 2 O) 2 (abs) 2 } n (M = Co 2+ and Mn 2+ , Habs = 4-aminoazobenzene-4'-sulfonic anion), constructed by coordination chains. The supramolecular frameworks sustained by H bonds between -SO 3 - and coordinated water show directional ladder-type H bonds with hydrophilic nanochannels, leading to high proton conduction with exceptionally high conductivity around 10 -2 S cm -1 at 100 °C under 97% relative humidity. In particular, the maximum σ value of CoHOF , 2.11 × 10 -2 S cm -1 , recorded the highest value among the reported proton-conducting materials showing slow magnetic relaxation. Meanwhile, the molecular structure of organosulfonate enables the magnetic isolation of high-spin Co 2+ and Mn 2+ centers in the frameworks. Magnetic measurements indicated that the MHOFs show field-induced single-ion magnet (SIM) properties, making these compounds rare magnetic-proton-conductive MHOFs. The work provides not only two unique MHOFs with SIM behavior and high proton conduction performance but also avenues for designing stable bifunctional MHOFs via a coordination chain approach.

Understanding the origin of ultralow lattice thermal conductivity κ L of halide perovskites is of great significance in the energy conversion field. The soft phonon modes and the large anharmonicity corresponding to the dynamic rotation of halogen atoms play an important role in limiting the thermal transport of halide perovskites. The dynamic rotation has long been thought to originate from the electrostatic repulsion of lone pairs around halogen atoms. Here, by studying the layered perovskite Cs 3 Bi 2 I 6 Cl 3 , it is found that the interaction between the lone pairs contributed by the s bands of halogen atoms is short-range, and the dynamic rotation is really driven by the occupied p-band electrons. It dominates Cs 3 Bi 2 I 6 Cl 3 with ultralow κ L , < 0.2 W mK -1 at 300 K. Moreover, soft optical phonons are presented ≈1 and 2.2 THz that constitute relatively flat and dense bands due to the rattling Cs and Cl atoms, contributing a large glass-like component to the κ L . Recent evidence indicates that reward value encoding in humans is highly context dependent, leading to suboptimal decisions in some cases, but whether this computational constraint on valuation is a shared feature of human cognition remains unknown. Here we studied the behaviour of n = 561 individuals from 11 countries of markedly different socioeconomic and cultural makeup. Our findings show that context sensitivity was present in all 11 countries. Suboptimal decisions generated by context manipulation were not explained by risk aversion, as estimated through a separate description-based choice task (that is, lotteries) consisting of matched decision offers. Conversely, risk aversion significantly differed across countries. Overall, our findings suggest that context-dependent reward value encoding is a feature of human cognition that remains consistently present across different countries, as opposed to description-based decision-making, which is more permeable to cultural factors., (© 2024. Stacking two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials in a layered bulk structure provides an appealing platform for the emergence of exotic physical properties. As a vdW crystal with exceptional plasticity, InSe offers the opportunity to explore various effects arising from the coupling of its peculiar mechanical behaviors and other physical properties. Here, we employ neutron scattering techniques to investigate the correlations of plastic interlayer slip, lattice anharmonicity, and thermal transport in InSe crystals. Not only are the interlayer slip direction and magnitude well captured by shifts in the Bragg reflections, but we also observe a deviation from the expected Debye behaviour in the heat capacity and lattice thermal conductivity. Combining the experimental data with first-principles calculations, we tentatively attribute the observed evidence of strong phonon-phonon interactions to a combination of a large acoustic-optical frequency resonance and a nesting effect. These findings correlate the macroscopic plastic slip and the microscopic lattice dynamics, providing insights into the mechano-thermo coupling and modulation in 2D vdW materials., (© 2024. Flexible thermoelectric devices hold significant promise in wearable electronics owing to their capacity for green energy generation, temperature sensing, and comfortable wear. However, the simultaneous achievement of excellent multifunctional sensing and power generation poses a challenge in these devices. Here, ordered tellurium-based hetero-nanowire films are designed for flexible and multifunctional thermoelectric devices by optimizing the Seebeck coefficient and power factor. The obtained devices can efficiently detect both object and environment temperature, thermal conductivity, heat proximity, and airflow. In addition, combining the thermoelectric units with radiative cooling materials exhibits remarkable thermal management capabilities, preventing device overheating and avoiding degradation in power generation. Impressively, this multifunctional electronics exhibits excellent resistance in extreme low earth orbit environments. Topological electronic transition is the very promising strategy for achieving high band degeneracy (N V ) and for optimizing thermoelectric performance. Herein, this work verifies in p-type Mg 3 Sb 2- x Bi x that topological electronic transition could be the key mechanism responsible for elevating the N V of valence band edge from 1 to 6, leading to much improved thermoelectric performance. Through comprehensive spectroscopy characterizations and theoretical calculations of electronic structures, the topological electronic transition from trivial semiconductor is unambiguously demonstrated to topological semimetal of Mg 3 Sb 2- x Bi x with increasing the Bi content, due to the strong spin-orbit coupling of Bi and the band inversion. The distinct evolution of Fermi surface configuration and the multivalley valence band edge with N V of 6 are discovered in the Bi-rich compositions, while a peculiar two-step band inversion is revealed for the first time in the end compound Mg 3 Bi 2 . As a result, the optimal p-type Mg 3 Sb 0.5 Bi 1.5 simultaneously obtains a positive bandgap and high N V of 6, and thus acquires the largest thermoelectric power factor of 3.54 and 6.93 µW cm -1 K -2 at 300 and 575 K, respectively, outperforming the values in other compositions. The integration of computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided process planning (CAPP), and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) systems is significantly enhanced by employing deep learning-based automatic feature recognition (AFR) methods. These methods outperform traditional, rule-based approaches, particularly in handling the complexities of intersecting features. However, existing deep learning-based AFR methods face two major challenges. The initial challenge stems from the frequent utilization of voxelized or point-cloud representations of CAD models, resulting in the unfortunate loss of valuable geometric and topological information inherent in original Boundary representation (B-Rep) models. The second challenge involves the limitation of supervised deep learning methods in identifying machining features that are not present in the predefined dataset. This constraint renders them suboptimal for the continually evolving datasets of real industrial scenarios. To address the first challenge, this study introduces a graph-structured language, Multidimensional Attributed Face-Edge Graph (maFEG), crafted to encapsulate the intricate geometric and topological details of CAD models. Furthermore, a graph neural network, Sheet-metalNet, is proposed for the efficient learning and interpretation of maFEGs. To tackle the second challenge, a three-component incremental learning strategy is proposed: an initial phase of pre-training and fine-tuning, a prototype sampling-based replay, and a stage employing knowledge distillation for parameter regularization. The effectiveness of Sheet-metalNet and its complementary incremental learning strategy is evaluated using the open-source MFCAD++ dataset and the newly created SMCAD dataset. Experimental results show that Sheet-metalNet surpasses state-of-the-art AFR methods in machining feature recognition accuracy. The micropore, a mysterious structure found in apicomplexan species, was recently shown to be essential for nutrient acquisition in Plasmodium falciparum and Toxoplasma gondii. However, the differences between the micropores of these two parasites questions the nature of a general apicomplexan micropore structure and whether the formation process model from Plasmodium can be applied to other apicomplexans. We analyzed the literature on different apicomplexan micropores and found that T. gondii probably harbors a more representative micropore type than the more widely studied ones in Plasmodium. Dietary habits are essential in the mean age at menarche (AAM). However, the causal relationship between these factors remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate the genetic relationship between dietary habits and AAM. Genetic summary statistics for dietary habits were obtained from the UK Biobank. GWAS summary data for AAM was obtained from the ReproGen Consortium. Linkage disequilibrium score regression was used to test genetic correlations between dietary habits and AAM. The Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses used the inverse-variance weighted method. Genetic correlations with AAM were identified for 29 candi-date dietary habits, such as milk type (skimmed, semi-skimmed, full cream; coefficient = 0.2704, P ldsc  = 1.13 × 10 -14 ). MR evaluations revealed that 19 dietary habits were associated with AAM, including bread type (white vs. any other; OR 1.71, 95% CI 1.28-2.29, P mr  = 3.20 × 10 -4 ), tablespoons of cooked vegetables (OR 0.437, 95% CI 0.29-0.67; P mr  = 1.30 × 10 -4 ), and cups of coffee per day (OR 0.72, 95% CI 0.57-0.92, P mr  = 8.31 × 10 -3 ). These results were observed to be stable under the sensitivity analysis. The graph representation of complex materials plays a crucial role in the field of inorganic and organic materials investigations for developing data-centric materials science, such as those using graph neural networks (GNNs). However, the currently prevalent GNN models are primarily employed for investigating periodic crystals and organic small molecule data, yet they still encounter challenges in terms of interpretability and computational efficiency when applied to polymer monomers and organic macromolecules data. There is still a lack of graph representation of organic polymers and macromolecules specifically tailored for GNN models to explore the structural characteristics. The Polymer-unit Graph , a novel coarse-grained graph representation method introduced in study, is dedicated to expressing and analyzing polymers and macromolecules. By incorporating the Polymer-unit Graph into the GNN models and analyzing the organic semiconductor (OSC) materials database, it becomes possible to uncover intricate structure-property relationships involving branched-chain engineering, fluoridation substitution, and donor-acceptor combination effects on the elementary structure of OSC polymers. Furthermore, the Polymer-unit Graph enables visualizing the relationship between target properties and polymer units while reducing training time by an impressive 98% and minimizing molecular graph representation models. In conclusion, the Polymer-unit Graph successfully integrates the concept of Polymer-unit into the field of GNNs, enabling more accurate analysis and understanding of organic polymers and macromolecules.

Interleukin-27 receptor (IL-27R) is expressed in a variety of immune cells and structural cells, including dendritic cells. The mechanism of IL-27 in asthma has not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to examine whether IL-27 regulated the CD39/ATP axis of dendritic cells in asthma. Our results showed that in ovalbumin (OVA)-induced asthma mouse model, IL-27Rα -/- asthmatic mice showed increased airway resistance, increased infiltration of inflammatory cells in lung tissue, proliferation of goblet cells, enhanced expression of Muc5 AC around airway epithelium, increased total number of cells and eosinophils, increased levels of total IgE, OVA-IgE, IL-4, IL-5, IL-13 and IL-17 A, and increased expression of transcription factors GATA-3 and RORγt in lung tissue. The expression of CD39 mRNA and protein in the lung tissue of IL-27Rα -/- asthmatic mice decreased, and the expression of NLRP3, ASC and Caspase-1 in NLRP3 inflammasome components increased. The concentration of ATP was significantly increased compared with WT asthmatic mice. In vitro experiments showed that the expression of CD39 in lung dendritic cells of IL-27Rα -/- asthmatic mice decreased, while the expression of NLRP3 inflammasome components NLRP3, ASC and Caspase-1 increased. The apicoplast is a four-membrane plastid found in the apicomplexans, which harbors biosynthesis and organelle housekeeping activities in the matrix. However, the mechanism driving the flux of metabolites, in and out, remains unknown. Here, we used TurboID and genome engineering to identify apicoplast transporters in Toxoplasma gondii . Among the many novel transporters, we show that one pair of apicomplexan monocarboxylate transporters (AMTs) appears to have evolved from a putative host cell that engulfed a red alga. Protein depletion showed that AMT1 and AMT2 are critical for parasite growth. Metabolite analyses supported the notion that AMT1 and AMT2 are associated with biosynthesis of isoprenoids and fatty acids. However, stronger phenotypic defects were observed for AMT2, including in the inability to establish T. gondii parasite virulence in mice. Searching for new high-performance thermoelectric (TE) materials that are economical and environmentally friendly is an urgent task for TE society, but the advancements are greatly limited by the time-consuming and high cost of the traditional trial-and-error method. The significant progress achieved in the computing hardware, efficient computing methods, advance artificial intelligence algorithms, and rapidly growing material data have brought a paradigm shift in the investigation of TE materials. Many electrical and thermal performance descriptors are proposed and efficient high-throughput (HTP) calculation methods are developed with the purpose to quickly screen new potential TE materials from the material databases. Some HTP experiment methods are also developed which can increase the density of information obtained in a single experiment with less time and lower cost. In addition, machine learning (ML) methods are also introduced in thermoelectrics. In this review, the HTP strategies in the discovery of TE materials are systematically summarized. The applications of performance descriptor, HTP calculation, HTP experiment, and ML in the discovery of new TE materials are reviewed. To understand the contamination characteristics and ecological risk of antibiotics in contaminated fields of pharmaceutical plants， samples of the surface soil， soil column， wastewater treatment process water， ground water， and residue dregs were collected from two typical antibiotic pharmaceutical plants in South and North China. A total of 87 commonly used antibiotics were quantified using ultrasound extraction-solid phase extraction and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results showed that a total of 31 antibiotics of five classes were detected in all types of samples， and the maximum concentrations at each sampling point in the surface soil， soil column， residue dregs， wastewater treatment process water， and groundwater were 420 ng·g -1 ， 595 ng·g -1 ， 139 ng·g -1 ， 1 151 ng·L -1 ， and 6.65 ng·L -1 ， respectively. Most of the antibiotics were found in the surface soil， showing a decreasing trend with the depth of the soil column. The ecological risk assessment indicated that sulfamethazine， sulfaquinoxaline， tetracycline， chlorotetracycline， and D-sorbitol were at higher risk. Improving the efficiency of antibiotic removal from pharmaceutical wastewater and preventing production shop leaks are effective measures of controlling antibiotic contamination into and around fields in pharmaceutical plants.

Layered compounds characterized by van der Waals gaps are often associated with relatively weak interlayer particle interactions. However, in specific scenarios, these seemingly feeble forces can exert an impact on interlayer interactions through subtle energy fluctuations, which can give rise to a diverse range of physical and chemical properties, particularly intriguing in the context of thermal transport. In this study, taking a natural superlattice composed of alternately stacked PbS and SnS 2 sublayers as a model, we proposed that in a superlattice, there is strong hybridization between acoustic phonons of heavy sublayers and optical phonons of light sublayers. We identified newly generated vibration modes in the superlattice, such as interlayer shear and breathing, which exhibit lower sound velocity and contribute less to heat transport compared to their parent materials, which significantly alters the thermal behaviors of the superlattice compared to its bulk counterparts. Our findings on the behavior of interlayer phonons in superlattices not only can shed light on developing functional materials with enhanced thermal dissipation capabilities but also contribute to the broader field of condensed matter physics, offering insights into various fields, including thermoelectrics and phononic devices, and may pave the way for technological advancements in these areas.

N-type ZrNiSn-based alloys reach a record thermoelectric figure of merit zT ≈1.2 by increasing the carrier concentration to 4-5 × 10 20 cm -3 . In this work, It is reported that a comparable zT can also be realized in trace Ru-doped ZrNiSn-based alloy at even lower temperature by decreasing the carrier concentration. Compared to the previously reported Co doping, the doping of Ru results in a more effective reduction in carrier concentration, and thus higher Seebeck coefficient, lower electronic thermal conductivity, and enhanced thermoelectric performance. The electronic specific heat coefficient of the ZrNi 1- x Ru x Sn sample remains constant with increasing Ru content, indicating no obvious change in the density of states effective mass. Theoretical calculations show that the doping of Ru has negligible effect on the bottom of conduction band. The lattice thermal conductivity is further reduced by alloying Ti and Hf at the Zr site, and the bipolar diffusion is suppressed by doping of 0.5 at.% Sb. As a result, Ti 0.25 Zr 0.5 Hf 0.25 Ni 0.99 Ru 0.01 Sn 0.995 Sb 0.005 reaches not only a zT value of 1.1 at 773 K but also a record average zT value of 0.8 in 300 to 873 K, demonstrating the effectiveness of trace Ru doping on boosting the thermoelectric performance of ZrNiSn-based alloys., (© 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

A dysprosium(III) metal-organic framework constructed using dysprosium(III) cubanes as secondary building units has been reported to exhibit field-induced slow magnetic relaxation behavior and an unprecedented ecu topology, which is the first example of an 8-connected Ln-cubane-based framework material and a rare Dy 4 -MOF showing slow magnetic relaxation.

Swine farms contaminated the surrounding environment through manure application and biogas slurry irrigation, hence causing the wide residual of multiple antimicrobial drugs (ADs) and their transformation products (TPs). This study performed target, suspect, and nontarget screening methods to comprehensively investigate the pollution profiles of ADs in a typical swine farm, and characterize the potential transformed pathway of TPs and distinguish specific reactions of different catalog of ADs. Samples of fresh feces, compost, biogas slurry, topsoil, column soil, groundwater and plants were analyzed using the database containing 98 target analytes, 679 suspected parent ADs, and ∼ 10 7 TPs. In total, 29 ADs were quantitively detected, and tetracyclines (TCs) were mostly frequently detected ADs with the concentrations up to 4251 ng/g in topsoil. Soil column investigation revealed that doxycycline (DOX) and tetracycline (TC) in soil could migrate to depths of approximately 1 m in soil. Suspect screening identified 75 parent ADs, with 10 being reported for the first time in environmental media. Semi-quantification of ADs revealed that one of the less-concerned ADs, clinafloxacin, was detected to exceed 5000 ng/L in biogas slurry, suggesting that significant attentions should be paid to these less-concerned ADs. Moreover, 314 TPs was identified, and most of them were found to undergo microbial/enzymatic metabolism pathways. Overall, our study displays a comprehensive overview of ADs and their TPs in swine farming environments, and provides an inventory of crucial list that worthy of concern. Extending a selected cyanometalate block into a higher dimensional framework continues to present intriguing challenges in the fields of chemistry and material science. Here, we prepared two rope-like chain compounds of {[(Tp* Me )Fe(CN) 3 ] 2 Cu 2 X 2 (L)}·sol ( 1 , X = Cl, L = (MeCN) 0.5 (H 2 O/MeOH) 0.5 , sol = 2MeCN·1.5H 2 O; 2 , X = Br, L = MeOH, sol = 2MeCN·0.75H 2 O; Tp* Me = tris(3, 4, 5-trimethylpyrazole)borate) in which the cyanide-bridged trigonal-bipyramidal [Fe 2 Cu 3 ] subunits were linked with the adjacent ones via two vertex Cu(II) centers, providing a new cyanometallate chain archetype. Direct current magnetic study revealed the presence of ferromagnetic couplings between Fe(III) and Cu(II) ions and uniaxial anisotropy due to a favorable alignment of the anisotropic tricyanoiron(III) units. Moreover, compound 1 exhibits single-chain magnet behavior with an appreciable energy barrier of 72 K, while 2 behaves as a metamagnet, likely caused by the subtle changes in the interchain interactions.

Band structure characteristics, such as band gap and band dispersion, are fundamental properties of materials. Temperature can affect them because of lattice expansion and phonon-induced atomic vibrations. Here, we apply the recently developed electron-phonon renormalization method to study the temperature effect on the band structures of thermoelectric (TE) filled skutterudites BaCo 4 Sb 12 , BaFe 4 Sb 12 , and YbFe 4 Sb 12 from first-principles. The results reveal that the band gap in BaCo 4 Sb 12 drops slower with temperature compared with our previous study on CoSb 3 , where it considerably reduces from 0 K to 800 K for BaFe 4 Sb 12 (∼0.222 eV) and YbFe 4 Sb 12 (∼0.201 eV). Furthermore, the band dispersions near the band edges at the Γ -point in the three systems at high temperatures are similar to those at 0 K, and the electron energies have small linewidths, whereas the linewidths for energies near the Fermi level are large. The different phenomena are due to the different phonon vibration-induced electronic structure disorders, reflecting the strength of electron-phonon coupling. Band renormalization would further affect the TE properties of these filled skutterudites. Our work provides a deeper understanding of the temperature-dependent band structure in skutterudites.

Obtaining a 3D feature description with high descriptiveness and robustness under complicated nuisances is a significant and challenging task in 3D feature matching. This paper proposes a novel feature description consisting of a stable local reference frame (LRF) and a feature descriptor based on local spatial voxels. First, an improved LRF was designed by incorporating distance weights into Z- and X-axis calculations. Subsequently, based on the LRF and voxel segmentation, a feature descriptor based on voxel homogenization was proposed. Moreover, uniform segmentation of cube voxels was performed, considering the eigenvalues of each voxel and its neighboring voxels, thereby enhancing the stability of the description. The performance of the descriptor was strictly tested and evaluated on three public datasets, which exhibited high descriptiveness, robustness, and superior performance compared with other current methods. In the apicomplexans, endocytosed cargos (e.g., hemoglobin) are trafficked to a specialized organelle for digestion. This follows a unique endocytotic process at the micropore/cytostome in these parasites. However, the mechanism underlying endocytic trafficking remains elusive, due to the repurposing of classical endocytic proteins for the biogenesis of apical organelles. To resolve this issue, we have exploited the genetic tractability of the model apicomplexan Toxoplasma gondii , which ingests host cytosolic materials (e.g., green fluorescent protein[GFP]). We determined an association between protein prenylation and endocytic trafficking, and using an alkyne-labeled click chemistry approach, the prenylated proteome was characterized. Genome editing, using clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repaet/CRISPR-associated nuclease 9 (CRISPR/Cas9), was efficiently utilized to generate genetically modified lines for the functional screening of 23 prenylated candidates. This identified four of these proteins that regulate the trafficking of endocytosed GFP vesicles. Among these proteins, Rab1B and YKT6.1 are highly conserved but are non-classical endocytic proteins in eukaryotes. Confocal imaging analysis showed that Rab1B and Ras are substantially localized to both the trans-Golgi network and the endosome-like compartments in the parasite. Conditional knockdown of Rab1B caused a rapid defect in secretory trafficking to the rhoptry bulb, suggesting a trafficking intersection role for the key regulator Rab1B. Further experiments confirmed a critical role for protein prenylation in regulating the stability/activity of these proteins (i.e., Rab1B and YKT6.1) in the parasite. Our findings define the molecular basis of endocytic trafficking and reveal a potential intersection function of Rab1B on membrane trafficking in T. gondii . This might extend to other related protists, including the malarial parasites. IMPORTANCE The protozoan Toxoplasma gondii establishes a permissive niche, in host cells, that allows parasites to acquire large molecules such as proteins. Numerous studies have demonstrated that the parasite repurposes the classical endocytic components for secretory sorting to the apical organelles, leaving the question of endocytic transport to the lysosome-like compartment unclear. Recent studies indicated that endocytic trafficking is likely to associate with protein prenylation in malarial parasites. This information promoted us to examine this association in the model apicomplexan T. gondii and to identify the key components of the prenylated proteome that are involved. By exploiting the genetic tractability of T. gondii and a host GFP acquisition assay, we reveal four non-classical endocytic proteins that regulate the transport of endocytosed cargos (e.g., GFP) in T. gondii . Currently, the efforts to find materials with high κ anisotropy ratios mainly focus on layered materials, however, the limited quantity and lower workability comparing to non-layered ones boost the exploration of non-layered materials with high κ anisotropy ratios. Here, taking PbSnS 3 , a typical non-layered orthorhombic compound, as an example, we propose that maldistribution of chemical bond strength can lead to large anisotropy of κ in non-layered materials. Our result reveals that the maldistribution of Pb-S bonds lead to obvious collective vibrations of dioctahedron chain units, resulting in an anisotropy ratio up to 7.1 at 200 K and 5.5 at 300 K, respectively, which is one of the highest ever reported in non-layered materials and even surpasses many classical layered materials such as Bi 2 Te 3 and SnSe. ING5 belongs to the inhibitor of growth (ING) candidate tumor suppressor family, which is involved in multiple cellular functions, such as cell cycle regulation, apoptosis, and chromatin remodelling. Previously, we reported that ING5 overexpression inhibits EMT by regulating EMT-related molecules, including Snail1, at the mRNA and protein levels. However, the mechanisms remain unclear. In the current study, we identify that ING5 overexpression induces the upregulation of miR-34c-5p. The expression levels of both ING5 and miR-34c-5p in NSCLC tissues from the TCGA database are decreased compared with that in adjacent tissues. Higher expression levels of both ING5 and miR-34c-5p predict longer overall survival (OS). Snail1 is the target gene of miR-34c-5p, as predicted by an online database, which is further verified by a dual-luciferase reporter assay. The expression level of Snail1 in NSCLC cells is markedly reduced following miR-34c-5p overexpression, leading to the inactivation of the Snail1 downstream TGF-β/Smad3 signaling pathway. The TGF-β signaling-specific inhibitor LY2157299 reverses the enhanced EMT, proliferation, migration, and invasion abilities induced by the miR-34c-5p inhibitor. Furthermore, tail vein injection of miR-34c-5p agomir inhibits xenografted tumor metastasis. Overall, this study concludes that miR-34c-5p, induced by ING5 overexpression, is a tumor suppressor that targets Snail1 and mediates the inhibitory effects of ING5 on the EMT and invasion of NSCLC cells. These results provide a novel mechanism mediating the antitumor effects of ING5.

Pursuing efficient thermoelectricity from low-dimensional materials has been highly motivated since the seminal work of Hicks and Dresselhaus. In fact, many superior thermoelectric materials like Bi 2 Te 3 , Mg 3 Sb 2 /Mg 3 Bi 2 and SnSe are quasi-two-dimensional (q2D), though the advantages of two-dimensionality appear to be diverse and sometimes controversial. Here, we report on a remarkably high thermoelectric performance in TlCu 3 Te 2 , which is quasi-one-dimensional (q1D) with a further reduced dimension. The thermoelectric figure of merit zT along its q1D axis amounts to 1.3 (1.5) at 300 (400) K, rivaling the best ever reported at these temperatures. The high thermoelectric performances benefit from, on one hand, large power factors derived from a center-hollowed, pancake-like Fermi pocket with q1D dispersion at the edge of a narrow band gap, and on the other hand, small lattice thermal conductivities caused by the large and anharmonic q1D lattice consisting of heavy, lone-pair-electron bearing (Tl + ) and weakly-bonded (Cu + ) ions. High-performance organic semiconductors (OSCs) can be designed based on the identification of functional units and their role in the material properties. Herein, we present a polymer-unit fingerprint (PUFp) generation framework, "Python-based polymer-unit-recognition script" (PURS), to identify the subunits "polymer unit" in the polymer and generate polymer-unit fingerprint (PUFp). Using 678 collected OSC data, machine learning (ML) models can be used to determine structure-mobility relationships by using PUFp as a structural input, and the classification accuracy reaches 85.2%. A polymer-unit library consisting of 445 units is constructed, and the key polymer units affecting the mobility of OSCs are identified. By investigating the combinations of polymer units with mobility performance, a scheme for designing OSCs by combining ML approaches and PUFp information is proposed. This scheme not only passively predicts OSC mobility but also actively provides structural guidance for high-mobility OSC material design. The proposed scheme demonstrates the ability to screen materials through pre-evaluation and classification ML steps and is an alternative methodology for applying ML in high-mobility OSC discovery.

Gallium (Ga) is a low melting point metal in the liquid state in the biological environment which presents a unique combination of fluidity, softness, and metallic electrical and thermal properties. In this work, liquid Ga is proposed as a biocompatible electrode material for cell culture by electro-stimulation since the cytotoxicity of Ga is generally considered low and some Ga compounds have been reported to exhibit anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory activities. Complementarily, polydopamine (PDA) was coated on liquid Ga to increase the attachment capability of cells on the liquid Ga electrode and provide enhanced biocompatibility. The liquid Ga layer could be readily painted at room temperature on a solid inert substrate, followed by the formation of a nanoscale PDA coating layer resulting in a conformable and biocompatible composite electrode. The PDA layer was shown to coordinate with Ga 3+ , which is sourced from liquid Ga, providing electrical conductivity in the cell culture medium. The PDA-Ga 3+ composite acted as a conductive substrate for advanced electro-stimulation for cell culture methods of representative animal fibroblasts. The cell proliferation was observed to increase by ∼143% as compared to a standard glass coverslip at a low potential of 0.1 V of direct coupling stimulation. This novel PDA-Ga 3+ composite has potential applications in cell culture and regenerative medicine.

Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is the causative agent of toxoplasmosis and can infect numerous warm-blooded animals. An improved understanding of the fine structure of this parasite can help elucidate its replication mechanism. Previous studies have resolved the ultrastructure of the cytoskeleton using purified samples, which eliminates their cellular context. Here the application of cryo-electron tomography to visualize T. gondii tachyzoites in their native state is reported. The fine structure and cellular distribution of the cytoskeleton are resolved and analyzed at nanometer resolution. Additionally, the tachyzoite structural characteristics are annotated during its endodyogeny for the first time. By comparing the structural features in mature tachyzoites and their daughter buds, it is proposed that the conoid fiber of the Apicomplexa originates from microtubules. This work represents the detailed molecular anatomy of T. gondii, particularly during the budding replication stage of tachyzoite, and provides a reference for further studies of this fascinating organism., (© 2023 The Authors. Abstract: Background: Immunosuppression caused by immune cell apoptosis and an imbalance of T helper 2 cells (T H 2) and T helper 1 cells (T H 1), is associated with poor outcomes in septic patients. Esmolol was reported to improve survival by modulating immune responses in septic shock. Whether esmolol could alleviate sepsis-induced immunosuppression and the optimal dose are unclear. Methods: Four hours after cecal ligation and puncture (CLP), Wistar rats were randomized into CLP, CLP + E-5 (esmolol: 5 mg·kg -1 ·h -1 ) and CLP + E-18 (esmolol: 18 mg·kg -1 ·h -1 ) groups. Eight rats were underwent sham operation. Eighteen hours after CLP, hemodynamics and organ histological injuries were evaluated, peripheral blood mononuclear cells apoptosis and T-lymphocyte subsets counts were determined by flow cytometry, and the expression of p-Akt, Bcl-2, cleaved Caspase-3, and p-Erk1/2 in splenic CD4 + T-lymphocytes was determined by western blot and immunohistochemistry. β 1 -Adrenoreceptor expressions were evaluated using real-time polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry. Results: Cecal ligation and puncture induced tachycardia, hypotension, hyperlactatemia, and multiple organ injury. Heart rate was unchanged in the CLP + E-5 group but decreased in the CLP + E-18 group. Hypotension, lactatemia, and multiple organ injuries were improved only in the CLP + E-5 group. T-lymphocyte apoptosis and T H 2/T H 1 ratio was decreased in CLP + E-5 but not in CLP + E-18. p-Akt and Bcl-2 expressions were increased, while cleaved Caspase-3 and p-Erk1/2 expressions were decreased in CLP + E-5. β 1 -Adrenoreceptor expressions were unchanged in both CLP + E-5 and CLP + E-18 groups. Conclusions: Low dose of esmolol reduced T-lymphocyte apoptosis and restored T H 2/T H 1 ratio in septic shock. Esmolol might modulate Akt/Bcl-2/Caspase-3 pathway to relieve T-lymphocyte apoptosis and inhibit Erk1/2 activity to decrease T H 0 differentiation to T H 2. Gallium (Ga) is a low melting point post-transition metal that, under mild mechanical agitation, can form micron and submicron-sized particles with combined fluid-like and metallic properties. In this work, an inorganic network of Ga liquid metal particles was synthesised via spontaneous formation of manganese (Mn) oxide species on their liquid metallic surfaces forming an all-inorganic composite. The micron-sized Ga particles formed by sonication were connected together by Mn oxide nanostructures spontaneously established from the reduction of a Mn salt in aqueous solution slightly above the melting point of Ga. The formed Mn oxide nanostructures were found to coalesce from the surface of the Ga particles into a continuous inorganic network. The morphology of the composites could be altered by varying the Mn salt concentration and by performing post-treatment annealing. The composites presented a shell of various Mn oxide nanostructures including wrinkled sheets, rods and nanoneedles, around spherical liquid Ga particles, and a liquid metal core. The photoelectric and optical properties of the composites were thoroughly characterised, which revealed decreasing bandgaps and valence band edge characteristics as a function of increased Mn oxide coverage. The photoluminescence properties of the composites could be also engineered by increasing the Mn oxide coverage. The all-inorganic liquid Ga composite could be formed via a straightforward reduction reaction of a Mn-rich salt at the surface of liquid Ga particles with tunable surface properties for future optoelectronic applications.

Thermoelectric (TE) materials can directly convert heat to electricity and vice versa and have broad application potential for solid-state power generation and refrigeration. Over the past few decades, efforts have been made to develop new TE materials with high performance. However, traditional experiments and simulations are expensive and time-consuming, limiting the development of new materials. Machine learning (ML) has been increasingly applied to study TE materials in recent years. This paper reviews the recent progress in ML-based TE material research. The application of ML in predicting and optimizing the properties of TE materials, including electrical and thermal transport properties and optimization of functional materials with targeted TE properties, is reviewed. Finally, future research directions are discussed.

Apicomplexan parasite growth and replication relies on nutrient acquisition from host cells, in which intracellular multiplication occurs, yet the mechanisms that underlie the nutrient salvage remain elusive. Numerous ultrastructural studies have documented a plasma membrane invagination with a dense neck, termed the micropore, on the surface of intracellular parasites. However, the function of this structure remains unknown. Here we validate the micropore as an essential organelle for endocytosis of nutrients from the host cell cytosol and Golgi in the model apicomplexan Toxoplasma gondii. Detailed analyses demonstrated that Kelch13 is localized at the dense neck of the organelle and functions as a protein hub at the micropore for endocytic uptake. Intriguingly, maximal activity of the micropore requires the ceramide de novo synthesis pathway in the parasite. Thus, this study provides insights into the machinery underlying acquisition of host cell-derived nutrients by apicomplexan parasites that are otherwise sequestered from host cell compartments., (© 2023. Additive manufacturing is one the most promising fabrication strategies for the fabrication of bone tissue scaffolds using biodegradable semi-crystalline polymers. During the fabrication process, polymeric material in a molten state is deposited in a platform and starts to solidify while cooling down. The build-up of consecutive layers reheats the previously deposited material, introducing a complex thermal cycle with impacts on the overall properties of printed scaffolds. Therefore, the accurate prediction of these thermal cycles is significantly important to properly design the additively manufactured polymer scaffolds and the bonding between the layers. This paper presents a novel multi-stage numerical model, integrating a 2D representation of the dynamic deposition process and a 3D thermal evolution model to simulate the fabrication process. Numerical simulations show how the deposition velocity controls the spatial dimensions of the individual deposition layers and the cooling process when consecutive layers are deposited during polymer printing. Moreover, numerical results show a good agreement with experimental results.

Background: Trichinosis is a worldwide food-borne zoonotic parasitic disease, which is mainly obtained by ingesting undercooked meat containing infected larvae. The purpose of our article is to introduce and discuss two rare cases of pleural effusion caused by Trichinella spiralis., Case Presentation: Here we described two male patients who presented to the respiratory department of our hospital with a massive unilateral pleural effusion, their serum eosinophils were in the normal range, laboratory serological tests revealed that Trichinella spiralis IgG antibody was positive. After the oral administration of antiparasitic drugs, the pleural effusion of two patients was completely absorbed., Conclusion: Both patients were diagnosed with Trichinosis complicated with pleural effusion, which is very rare in the clinic and easy to be misdiagnosed because of normal eosinophils., (© 2023. Disruption of T-cell differentiation is characteristic of airway inflammation in allergic asthma. How miR-19a works in asthma has not been completely elucidated. This study aimed to examine whether microRNA-19a regulates helper T-cell proliferation and to identify the factors involved and the underlying mechanisms. Our results showed that miR-19a levels were upregulated in parallel with a reduction in RUNX3 expression in a house dust mite (HDM)-induced murine model of asthma. A dual-luciferase reporter assay and RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) assay showed that RUNX3 was a direct target of miR-19a. Inhibiting the expression of miR-19a attenuated inflammation and mucus production, induced Th1 cells, suppressed the Th2 inflammatory response, and repressed dendritic cell (DC) maturation by increasing RUNX3 expression in WT asthmatic mice but not RUNX3 +/- mice. In vitro experiments revealed that miR-19a inhibition could target RUNX3 to induce Th1 polarization and inhibit Th2 polarization by directly acting on naïve CD4 + T cells or indirectly mediating the maturation and antigen-presenting abilities of DCs. Many Zintl phases are promising thermoelectric materials owning to their features like narrow band gaps, multiband behaviors, ideal charge transport tunnels, and loosely bound cations. Herein we show a new Zintl phase NaCdSb with exceptional intrinsic thermoelectric performance. Pristine NaCdSb exhibits semiconductor behaviors with an experimental hole concentration of 2.9×10 18  cm -3 and a calculated band gap of 0.5 eV. As the temperature increases, the hole concentration rises gradually and approaches its optimal one, leading to a high power factor of 11.56 μW cm -1  K -2 at 673 K. The ultralow thermal conductivity is derived from the small phonon group velocity and short phonon lifetime, ascribed to the structural anharmonicity of Cd-Sb bonds. As a consequence, a maximum zT of 1.3 at 673 K has been achieved without any doping optimization or structural modification, demonstrating that NaCdSb is a remarkable thermoelectric compound with great potential for performance improvement., (© 2022 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory-related disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). More than 200 countries worldwide are affected by this disease. The Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 is the major epidemic variant worldwide and is characterized by higher infectivity. However, the immunity and risk factors for prolonged viral elimination in patients with non-severe SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant infections are unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the relationship between immunity and duration of viral elimination in non-severe SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant-infected patients in Shanghai., Methods: In total, 108 non-severe SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant-infected patients from Shanghai New International Expo Center Fangcang Shelter Hospital were recruited in this study. They were further allocated to the early elimination (EE) and prolonged elimination (PE) groups according to SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid positivity duration., Results: Compared to patients with EE, those with PE had increased serum concentrations of interleukin (IL)-5, IL-6, and IL-8; higher neutrophil count and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR); lower lymphocyte, eosinophil, and red blood cell counts; and lower concentrations of hemoglobin and albumin (ALB). In lymphocyte subpopulation analysis, lower numbers of CD3 + T cells, CD4 + T cells, CD8 + T cells, and NK cells and a higher CD4/CD8 ratio were observed in patients with PE. In addition, correlation analysis results revealed that cycle threshold values of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant ORF1ab and N were negatively correlated with IL-6 and IL-8 levels and positively correlated with eosinophil count in patients with COVID-19. Finally, multivariate regression analysis showed that ALB, CD4/CD8 ratio, NLR, and eosinophil count were predictors of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant elimination., Conclusion: In this study, we identified that the ALB, CD4/CD8 ratio, NLR, and eosinophil count were risk factors for prolonged viral elimination in non-severe SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant-infected patients. An interplay of geometrical frustration and strong quantum fluctuations in a spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet (TAF) can lead to exotic quantum states. Here, we report the neutron-scattering, magnetization, specific heat, and magnetocaloric studies of the recently discovered spin-1/2 TAF Na 2 BaCo(PO 4 ) 2 , which can be described by a spin-1/2 easy axis XXZ model. The zero-field neutron diffraction experiment reveals an incommensurate antiferromagnetic ground state with a significantly reduced ordered moment of about 0.54(2) μ B /Co. Different magnetic phase diagrams with magnetic fields in the a b plane and along the easy c -axis were extracted based on the magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and elastic neutron-scattering results. In addition, two-dimensional (2D) spin dispersion in the triangular plane was observed in the high-field polarized state, and microscopic exchange parameters of the spin Hamiltonian have been determined through the linear spin wave theory. Consistently, quantum critical behaviors with the universality class of d  = 2 and ν z = 1 were established in the vicinity of the saturation field, where a Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of diluted magnons occurs. The newly discovered quantum criticality and fractional magnetization phase in this ideal spin-1/2 TAF present exciting opportunities for exploring exotic quantum phenomena.

Background and Objectives: Previous studies have suggested that long-term β-blocker therapy before sepsis is associated with reduced mortality. Sepsis-associated coagulopathy (SAC) remains a common complication in patients with sepsis and is associated with increased mortality. Adrenergic pathways are involved in the regulation of the coagulation system. Pre-existing long-term β-blocker therapy may have potentially beneficial effects on SAC and has yet to be well characterized. We aimed to assess the potential association between pre-existing long-term β-blocker therapy and the outcomes of patients with SAC. Materials and Methods: This study retrospectively screened the clinical data of adult patients with SAC admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and respiratory ICU between May 2020 and October 2022. Patients with SAC who took any β-blocker for at least one year were considered pre-existing long-term β-blocker therapy. All enrolled patients were followed up for 28 days or until death. Results: Among the 228 SAC patients, 48 received long-term β-blocker therapy before septic episodes. Pre-existing long-term β-blocker therapy was associated with reduced vasopressor requirements and a decreased 28-day mortality (log-rank test: p = 0.041). In particular, long-term β-blocker therapy was related to substantially lower D-dimer levels and a trend of improved activated partial thromboplastin time in patients with SAC during initial ICU admission. Multivariable regression analysis showed that long-term β-blocker therapy was significantly and independently associated with a 28-day mortality among patients with SAC (adjusted odds ratio, 0.55; 95% confidence interval, (0.32-0.94); p = 0.030). Conclusions: Pre-existing long-term β-blocker therapy might be associated with reduced vasopressor requirements and a decreased 28-day mortality among patients with SAC, providing evidence for the protective effect of β-blockers against SAC in managing sepsis.

Spin crossover (SCO) complexes have been extensively explored as bistable materials and recently used as molecular modules for the development of new multifunctional molecular magnetic materials. Herein, we present the synthesis, crystal structure, magnetic, and electrical properties of a mononuclear cobalt complex constructed by a halogen-functionalized terpyridine derivative and organosulfonate. A complete and gradual spin transition with the T 1/2 =200 K was observed for the Co 2+ ions through both the magnetic measurement and dynamic crystallographic experiments. Interestingly, considerable room temperature proton conductivity of 6.9×10 -5  S cm -1 under 98% relative humidity was evidenced because of the presence of sulfonate-assisted hydrogen-bonded proton hopping pathways. New ternary gold alloys with low resistivities (ρ) were screened out via an interpretable machine learning strategy by using the support vector regression (SVR) model integrated with SHAP analysis. The correlation coefficient (R) and the root mean square error (RMSE) of test set were 0.876 and 0.302, respectively, indicating the strong generalization ability of the model. The average ρ of top 10 candidates was 1.22×10 -7  Ω m, which was 41% lower than the known minimum of 2.08×10 -7  Ω m. The outputs of SVR model were analyzed with the critical SHAP values including first ionization energy of C-site (584 kJ ⋅ mol -1 ), electronegativity of C-site (1.72) and the second ionization energy of B-site (1135 kJ ⋅ mol -1 ), respectively. We demonstrate the use of functional-unit-based material design for thermoelectrics. This is an efficient approach for identifying high-performance thermoelectric materials, based on the use of combinations of functional fragments relevant to desired properties. Here, we reveal that linear triatomic resonant bonds (LTRBs) found in some Zintl compounds provide strong anisotropy both structurally and electronically, along with strong anharmonic phonon scattering. An LTRB is thus introduced as a functional unit, and compounds are then screened as potential thermoelectric materials. We identify 17 semiconducting candidates from the MatHub-3d database that contain LTRBs. Detailed transport calculations demonstrate that the LTRB-containing compounds not only have considerably lower lattice thermal conductivities than other compounds with similar average atomic masses, but also exhibit remarkable band anisotropy near the valence band maximums due to the LTRB. K 5 CuSb 2 is adopted as an example to elucidate the fundamental correlation between the LTRB and thermoelectric properties. The [Sb-Cu-Sb] 5- resonant structures demonstrate the delocalized Sb-Sb interaction within each LTRB, resulting in the softening of TA phonons and leading to large anharmonicity. The low lattice thermal conductivity (0.39 W/m·K at 300 K) combined with the band anisotropy results in a high thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) for K 5 CuSb 2 of 1.3 at 800 K. This work is a case study of the functional-unit-based material design for the development of novel thermoelectric materials.

Eosinophilic asthma accounts for 40% to 50% of asthmatic patients. However, 5% to 10% of patients with asthma need high-dose drug control, which is clinically referred to as severe asthma patients. Interleukin (IL)-5 plays an important role in the proliferation, maturation, and migration of eosinophils. Benralizumab, as an antagonist of the IL-5 receptor, can treat eosinophilic asthma by promoting the apoptosis of eosinophils. The implications for efficacy and/or adverse events are unclear. This article reviews the findings about benralizumab in the treatment of severe eosinophilic asthma in recent years. Understanding the interfacial contacts between liquid metals and substrate materials is becoming increasingly important for the fast-rising liquid metal-enabled technologies. However, for such technologies, probing the contact behavior and interfacial charge transport has remained challenging due to the deformable nature of liquid metals and the presence of the surface oxide layer. Here, we encapsulate eutectic gallium indium (EGaIn) micro-/nanodroplets with tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) nanoparticles to form a WO 3 /EGaIn liquid metal marble network, in which the interfacial contact of the intrinsically semiconducting WO 3 governs the charge transport. We investigate the interfacial structures and charge transport characteristics under different contact conditions and various gaseous environments. The results suggest that establishing a WO 3 /EGaIn heterostructure leads to near-ohmic contact behaviors and also the emergence of localized surface plasmon resonance. Density functional theory calculations of the WO 3 /EGaIn interface support the experiments by revealing atomistic attractions between EGaIn alloy and the O atoms from WO 3 , resulting in a Fermi level shift. We also show that the efficient interfacial charge transport of the liquid metal marble network results in an enhanced gas-sensing response. This work paves the way for the possibility of studying other liquid metal/semiconductor contacts for applications in soft electronics and optics.

Understanding the micro-mechanism of the temperature dependence of the band gap in all-inorganic perovskites is of great significance for their optoelectronic and photovoltaic applications in various temperature environments. Herein, based on the recently developed electron-phonon renormalization method, the temperature-dependent band gaps of the optoelectronic perovskite CsPbI 3 are studied from 300 K to 750 K (including orthorhombic, tetragonal, and cubic phases). It is found that the temperature-induced structural fluctuation makes the structure of perovskites deviate from the 0 K one, and the corresponding renormalized band gap differs from that at 0 K, especially for the high-temperature cubic phase ( e.g. , Δ E g is ∼177 meV at 600 K). However, within the temperature range of each CsPbI 3 phase, the band gap E g is enlarged slightly with the increase of temperature ( e.g. , Δ E g is ∼26 meV from 600 K to 750 K for the cubic phase), showing the insensitivity of the structural fluctuation effect to the temperature change. The reason is that the chemical characters of band edges are determined by PbI 3 - , and due to the strong correlation between Pb and I, the Pb-I bond lengths and Pb-I-Pb bond angles are almost unchanged as the temperature increases. Our work provides a fundamental understanding of the temperature-dependent band gaps in all-inorganic perovskites and shed light on the commercialization of perovskites.

Controlling lattice vibrations to obtain intrinsic low thermal conductivity play a critical role in thermal management of electronic and photonic devices, energy converters, and thermal insulation, which necessitates exploring new compounds and a thorough understanding of their chemical structure, bonding, and lattice dynamics. Herein, a new chalcogenide, Ga 6 Cr 5 Se 16 , shows intrinsic low lattice thermal conductivity κ lat , which crystallizes in the monoclinic phase (C2/m) with the stacked inverse GaSe 4 layers (g'), close-packed Cr 3+ Se 6 layers (c), GaSe 4 layers (g) and loosely-stacked Cr 2+ Se 6 layers (c') along the c-axis. In this structure, a wide variety of chemical bonding is arranged in each layer, such as covalent Ga-Se, covalent Cr 3+ -Se, and weaker Cr 2+ -Se bonding, which endow it with a large phonon symphony by strong coupling of soft acoustic and low-lying optical phonons. As a result, Ga 6 Cr 5 Se 16 realizes an intrinsic low κ lat of 0.79 W m - 1  K - 1 at 323 K, which is almost four times, or twice lower than that of Cr 3 Se 4 (2.95 W m - 1  K - 1 ), or Cr 2 Se 3 (1.56 W m - 1  K - 1 ), Ga 2 Se 3 (1.36 W m - 1 K - 1 ) at 323 K, respectively. Precise control of the structures and magnetic properties of a molecular material constitutes an important challenge to realize tailor-made magnetic function. Herein, we report that the ligand-directed coordination self-assembly of a dianionic cobalt(II) mononuclear complex and selective organic linkers has led to two distinct dicobalt(II) complexes, [Co 2 (pdms) 2 (bpym) 3 ]·2MeCN (1) and [Co(pdms)(bipm)] 2 ·3DMF (2) (H 2 pdms = 1,2-bis(methanesulfonamide)benzene; bpym = 2,2'-bipyrimidine; bimp = 1,4-bis[(1 H -imidazol-1-yl)methyl]benzene). Structural analyses revealed that complexes 1 and 2 are discrete binuclear molecules containing two neutral {Co(pdms)} species bridged by bpym and bimp ligands, respectively, forming an exchange-coupled CoII2 dimer and a rare CoII2 metallocycle. Magnetic studies found that 1 exhibits considerable antiferromagnetic interactions transferred by the bpym bridge while negligible magnetic interactions in 2 due to the long bimp ligands. Interestingly, both the complexes show significant magnetic anisotropy and thus exhibit slow magnetic relaxation under an external dc field originating from spin-lattice relaxation. Detailed theoretical calculations were further applied to understand the magnetic interactions and magnetic anisotropy in 1 and 2. The foregoing results highlight that coordination solids with programmed structures and magnetic properties can be designed and prepared through a judicious selection of molecular complex building blocks and organic linkers.

Systemic injury plays a central role in severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). Retrograde biliopancreatic duct infusion of sodium taurocholate (NaT) is commonly used to establish SAP animal models. To better characterize the systemic injury in this model, SAP was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats by NaT administration (3.5 or 5%), followed by sacrifice at 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h. Normal saline was used as a control in Sham-operated rats. The mortality rate, ascites volume, and serum and ascitic fluid amylase and lipase activities were assessed. Multiple organ dysfunction, including dysfunction of the pancreas, lung, ileum, liver, and kidney, was investigated using hematoxylin and eosin staining. The interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α levels in the ascitic fluid, serum, and ileum tissues were evaluated using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Tight junction proteins, zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) and occludin, in ileum tissues were studied using immunofluorescence. Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), creatinine (CRE) and urea levels were measured using an automatic biochemical analyzer. The results of the present study indicated that both 3.5 and 5% NaT could induce a stable elevation of pancreatitis indices, with histopathological injury of the pancreas, lungs and ileum (5% NaT). The ascitic fluid levels of IL-6 and IL-1β were increased in the 5% NaT group. ALT and AST levels increased temporarily and recovered in 72 h, without a significant increase in CRE and urea levels or apparent hepatic and renal pathological injury.
