Myopia can impact an individual's quality of life and induce multiple complications. In this study, we randomly divided guinea pigs into the normal control (NC) group, the lens-induced myopia (LIM) group, the normal control plus l-arginine injection (l-Arg) group, and the normal control plus saline injection (NaCl) group. The animals in each group received the relevant treatments. The results showed that myopia was deeper in the LIM and l-Arg groups compared with the NC and NaCl groups. Our experimental results suggest that the excessive supplement of l-Arg will induce myopia onset and a MEK-ERK cascade that stimulates the downstream nNOS-MMP2 and NRF2-KEAP1 signaling pathways, which is accompanied by inflammatory responses, fibrosis changes, and oxidative stress. After receiving excessive arginine supplements, the experimental individuals showed myopic shifts and a similar pathological state as the LIM group. In conclusion, the supplement of excessive arginine may be a danger factor for myopia onset.

The microbial reduction of arsenate (As(V)) significantly contributes to arsenic migration in mine stream sediment, primarily driven by heterotrophic microorganisms using dissolved organic matter (DOM) as a carbon source. This study reveals a novel reduction pathway in sediments that photosensitive DOM generates photoelectrons to stimulate diverse nonphototrophic microorganisms to reduce As(V). This microbial photoelectrophic As(V) reduction (PEAsR) was investigated using microcosm incubation, which showed the transfer of photoelectrons from DOM to indigenous sediment microorganisms, thereby leading to a 50% higher microbial reduction rate of As(V). The abundance of two marker genes for As(V) reduction, arrA and arsC , increased substantially, confirming the microbial nature of PEAsR rather than a photoelectrochemical process. Photoelectron ion is unlikely to stimulate photolithoautotrophic growth. Instead, diverse nonphototrophic genera, e.g., Cupriavidus , Sphingopyxis , Mycobacterium , and Bradyrhizobium , spanning 13 orders became enriched by 10-50 folds. Metagenomic binning revealed their genetic potential to mediate the photoelectron-assisted reduction of As(V). These microorganisms contain essential genes involved in respiratory As(V) reduction, detoxification As(V) reduction, dimethyl sulfoxide reductase family, c-type cytochromes, and multiple heavy-metal resistance but lack a complete photosynthesis system. The novel microbial PEAsR pathway offers new insights into the interaction between photoelectron utilization and nonphototrophic As(V)-reducing microorganisms, which may have profound implications for arsenic pollution transportation in mine stream sediment.

Objective: Autoinflammation and phospholipase C (PLC) γ2-associated antibody deficiency and immune dysregulation (APLAID) syndrome is an autoinflammatory disease caused by gain-of-function variants in PLCG2. This study investigates the pathogenic mechanism of a novel variant of PLCG2 in a patient with APLAID syndrome., Methods: Whole-exome sequencing and Sanger sequencing were used to identify the pathogenic variant in the patient. Single-cell RNA sequencing, immunoblotting, luciferase assay, inositol monophosphate enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, calcium flux assay, quantitative PCR, and immunoprecipitation were used to define inflammatory signatures and evaluate the effects of the PLCG2 variant on protein functionality and immune signaling., Results: We identified a novel de novo variant, PLCG2 p.D993Y, in a patient with colitis, pansinusitis, skin rash, edema, recurrent respiratory infections, B-cell deficiencies, and hypogammaglobulinemia. The single-cell transcriptome revealed exacerbated inflammatory responses in the patient's peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Expression of the D993Y variant in HEK293T, COS-7, and PLCG2 knock-out THP-1 cell lines showed heightened PLCγ2 phosphorylation; elevated inositol-1,4,5-trisphosphate production and intracellular Ca 2+ release; and activation of the MAPK, NF-κB, and NFAT signaling pathways compared with control-transfected cells. In vitro experiments indicated that the D993Y variant altered amino acid properties, disrupting the interaction between the catalytic and autoinhibitory domains of PLCγ2, resulting in PLCγ2 autoactivation., Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated that the PLCG2 D993Y variant is a gain-of-function mutation via impairing its autoinhibition, activating multiple inflammatory signaling pathways, thus leading to APLAID syndrome. This study aimed to establish a complete atlas of retinal cells in lens-induced myopia (LIM) and electroacupuncture (EA) intervention by single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and to explore the potential mechanism of EA in improving experimental myopia progression in guinea pigs. scRNA-seq is used to assess changes in individual cellular gene levels in the retina of LIM- and EA-treated guinea pigs. In addition, the role of EA in slowing myopia progression by improving retinal mitochondrial function is further investigated. scRNA-seq identified ten cell clusters in the retina of LIM and EA guinea pigs and mitochondrial respiratory chain-related genes in Cones and Muller-glia cells-Cytochrome oxidase subunit III (COX3), NADH dehydrogenase subunit 4 (ND4), and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 (ND2) are closely related to lens-induced myopia. Deciphering universal gene regulatory mechanisms in diverse organisms holds great potential for advancing our knowledge of fundamental life processes and facilitating clinical applications. However, the traditional research paradigm primarily focuses on individual model organisms and does not integrate various cell types across species. Recent breakthroughs in single-cell sequencing and deep learning techniques present an unprecedented opportunity to address this challenge. In this study, we built an extensive dataset of over 120 million human and mouse single-cell transcriptomes. After data preprocessing, we obtained 101,768,420 single-cell transcriptomes and developed a knowledge-informed cross-species foundation model, named GeneCompass. During pre-training, GeneCompass effectively integrated four types of prior biological knowledge to enhance our understanding of gene regulatory mechanisms in a self-supervised manner. By fine-tuning for multiple downstream tasks, GeneCompass outperformed state-of-the-art models in diverse applications for a single species and unlocked new realms of cross-species biological investigations. We also employed GeneCompass to search for key factors associated with cell fate transition and showed that the predicted candidate genes could successfully induce the differentiation of human embryonic stem cells into the gonadal fate. Overall, GeneCompass demonstrates the advantages of using artificial intelligence technology to decipher universal gene regulatory mechanisms and shows tremendous potential for accelerating the discovery of critical cell fate regulators and candidate drug targets., (© 2024. Compared to conventional fibers, electrospun porous nanofibers with hierarchical structures often involve additional active sites, interfaces, and internal spaces which boost the performances of functional materials. Here in this study, coaxial composite cellulose acetate@silk fibroin (CA@SF) fibrous membranes are constructed through an electrostatic spinning technique combining solvent-induced phase separation. Hierarchical core-shell structures on the fibers are achieved, which significantly increases the surface area and benefits the mechanical property, flux, as well as the electroless deposition of Ag nanoparticles. The total electromagnetic shielding efficiency of the sandwiched hierarchical CA@SF@Ag composite membrane with a thickness of only 100 μm reaches up to 100 dB, surpassing around 82% beyond nonhierarchical ones. To be noticed, when post-treated by ethanol, the membrane enables an enhanced tensile strength of up to 10 MPa with a thickness of only 50 μm. Our findings pave the way to the application of electrospun fiber membranes in the field of ultrathin electromagnetic shielding films.

Controlling the growth of microbial consortia is of great significance in the biomedical field. Selective bacterial growth is achieved by fabricating silk inverse opal (SIO) scaffolds with varying pore sizes ranging from 0.3 to 4.5 µm. Pore size significantly influences the growth dynamics of bacteria in both single and mixed-strain cultures. Specially, the SIO-4.5 µm scaffold is observed to be more favorable for cultivating S. aureus, whereas the SIO-0.3 µm scaffold is more suitable for cultivating E. coli and P. aeruginosa. By adjusting the secondary conformation of silk fibroin, the stiffness of the SIO substrate will be altered, which results in the increase of bacteria on the SIO by 16 times compared with that on the silk fibroin film. Manipulating the pore size allows for the adjustment of the S. aureus to P. aeruginosa ratio from 0.8 to 9.3, highlighting the potential of this approach in regulating bacterial culture., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

In the natural environment, a symphony of environmental factors including sunlight exposure, current fluctuations, sodium chloride concentrations, and sediment dynamics intertwine, potentially magnifying the impacts on the aging process of disposable face masks (DFMs), thus escalating environmental risks. Employing Regular Two-Level Factorial Design, the study scrutinized interactive impacts of ultraviolet radiation, sand abrasion, acetic acid exposure, sodium chloride levels, and mechanical agitation on mask aging. Aging mechanisms and environmental risks linked with DFMs were elucidated through two-dimensional correlation analyses and risk index method. Following a simulated aging duration of three months, a single mask exhibited the propensity to release a substantial quantity of microplastics, ranging from 38,800 ± 360 to 938,400 ± 529 particles, and heavy metals, with concentrations from 0.06 ± 0.02 μg/g (Pb) to 29.01 ± 1.83 μg/g (Zn). Besides, specific contaminants such as zinc ions (24.24 μg/g), chromium (VI) (4.20 μg/g), thallium (I) (0.92 μg/g), tetracycline (0.51 μg/g), and acenaphthene (1.73 μg/g) can be adsorbed significantly by aged masks. The study elucidates pivotal role of interactions between ultraviolet radiation and acetic acid exposure in exacerbating the environmental risks associated with masks, while emphasizing the pronounced influence of many other interactions. The occurrence and development of ophthalmic diseases are related to the dysfunction of eye tissues. Ubiquitin is an important form of protein post-translational modification, which plays an essential role in the occurrence and development of diseases through specific modification of target proteins. Ubiquitination governs a variety of intracellular signal transduction processes, including proteasome degradation, DNA damage repair, and cell cycle progression. Studies have found that ubiquitin can play a role in eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, keratopathy, retinopathy, and eye tumors. Natural polymer-derived nanofibrils have gained significant interest in diverse fields. However, production of bio-nanofibrils with the hierarchical structures such as fibrillar structures and crystalline features remains a great challenge. Herein, an all-natural strategy for simple, green, and scalable top-down exfoliation silk nanofibrils (SNFs) in novel renewable deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed by amino acids and D-sorbitol is innovatively developed. The DES-exfoliated SNFs with a controllable fibrillar structures and intact crystalline features, novelty preserving the hierarchical structure of natural silk fibers. Owing to the amphiphilic nature, the DES-exfoliated SNFs show excellent capacity of assisting the exfoliation of several 2D-layered materials, i.e., h-BN, MoS 2 , and WS 2 . More importantly, the SNFs-assisted dispersion of BNNSs with a concentration of 59.3% can be employed to construct SNFs/BNNSs nanocomposite membranes with excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength of 416.7 MPa, tensile modulus of 3.86 GPa and toughness of 1295.4 KJ·m -3 ) and thermal conductivity (in-plane thermal conductivity coefficient of 3.84 W·m -1 ·K -1 ), enabling it to possess superior cooling efficiency compared with the commercial silicone pad., (© 2024 The Author(s). Furniture is identified as a vital volatile organic compound (VOC) emission source in the indoor environment. Leather has become the most common raw and auxiliary fabric material for upholstered furniture, particularly with extensive consumption in sofas, due to its abundant resources and efficient functions. Despite being widely traded across the world, little research has been conducted on the VOCs released by leather materials and their health risk assessment in the indoor environment. Accordingly, this study investigated the VOC emissions of leather with different grades and the health risk of the inhalation exposure. Based on the ultra-fast gas phase electronic nose (EN) and GC-FID/Qtof, the substantial emissions of aliphatic aldehyde ketones (Aks), particularly hexanal, appear to be the cause of off-flavor in medium and low grade (MG and LG) sofa leathers. The health risk assessment indicated that leather materials barely pose non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic effects to residents. Background: Myopia is one of the most common eye diseases in children and adolescents worldwide, and scleral remodeling plays a role in myopia progression. However, the identity of the initiating factors and signaling pathways that induce myopia-associated scleral remodeling is still unclear. This study aimed to identify biomarkers of scleral remodeling to elucidate the pathogenesis of myopia., Methods: The gene expression omnibus (GEO) and comparative toxicogenomics database (CTD) mining were used to identify the miRNA-mRNA regulatory network related to scleral remodeling in myopia. Real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR), Western blot, immunofluorescence, H&E staining, Masson staining, and flow cytometry were used to detect the changes in the FOXO signaling pathway, fibrosis, apoptosis, cell cycle, and other related factors in scleral remodeling., Results: miR-15b-5p/miR-379-3p can regulate the FOXO signaling pathway. Confirmatory studies confirmed that the axial length of the eye was significantly increased, the scleral thickness was thinner, the levels of miR-15b-5p, miR-379-3p, PTEN, p-PTEN, FOXO3a, cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitor 1B (CDKN1B) were increased, and the levels of IGF1R were decreased in Len-induced myopia (LIM) group. CDK2, cyclin D1 (CCND1), and cell cycle block assessed by flow cytometry indicated G1/S cell cycle arrest in myopic sclera. The increase in BAX level and the decrease in BCL-2 level indicated enhanced apoptosis of the myopic sclera. In addition, we found that the levels of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), collagen type 1 (COL-1), and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) were decreased, suggesting scleral remodeling occurred in myopia., Conclusions: miR-15b-5p/miR-379-3p can regulate the scleral cell cycle and apoptosis through the IGF1R/PTEN/FOXO signaling pathway, thereby promoting scleral remodeling in myopia progression., (© 2024. Rechargeable aluminum batteries (RABs) are a promising candidate for large-scale energy storage, attributing to the abundant reserves, low cost, intrinsic safety, and high theoretical capacity of Al. However, the cathode materials reported thus far still face challenges such as limited capacity, sluggish kinetics, and undesirable cycle life. Herein, we propose an organic cathode benzo[i] benzo[6,7] quinoxalino [2,3-a] benzo [6,7] quinoxalino [2,3-c] phenazine-5,8,13,16,21,24-hexaone (BQQPH) for RABs. The six C=O and six C=N redox active sites in each molecule enable BQQPH to deliver a record ultra-high capacity of 413 mAh g -1 at 0.2 A g -1 . Encouragingly, the intermolecular hydrogen bonding network and π-π stacking interactions endow BQQPH with robust structural stability and minimal solubility, enabling an ultra-long lifetime of 100,000 cycles. Moreover, the electron-withdrawing carbonyl group induces a reduction in the energy level of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and expands the π-conjugated system, which considerably enhances both the discharge voltage and redox kinetics of BQQPH. In situ and ex situ characterizations combined with theoretical calculations unveil that the charge storage mechanism is reversible coordination/dissociation of AlCl 2 + with the N and O sites in BQQPH accompanied by 12-electron transfer. High-entropy oxides (HEOs) have garnered significant attention within the realm of rechargeable batteries owing to their distinctive advantages, which encompass diverse structural attributes, customizable compositions, entropy-driven stabilization effects, and remarkable superionic conductivity. Despite the brilliance of HEOs in energy conversion and storage applications, there is still lacking a comprehensive review for both entry-level and experienced researchers, which succinctly encapsulates the present status and the challenges inherent to HEOs, spanning structural features, intrinsic properties, prevalent synthetic methodologies, and diversified applications in rechargeable batteries. Within this review, the endeavor is to distill the structural characteristics, ionic conductivity, and entropy stabilization effects, explore the practical applications of HEOs in the realm of rechargeable batteries (lithium-ion, sodium-ion, and lithium-sulfur batteries), including anode and cathode materials, electrolytes, and electrocatalysts. The review seeks to furnish an overview of the evolving landscape of HEOs-based cell component materials, shedding light on the progress made and the hurdles encountered, as well as serving as the guidance for HEOs compositions design and optimization strategy to enhance the reversible structural stability, electrical properties, and electrochemical performance of rechargeable batteries in the realm of energy storage and conversion., (© 2024 The Authors. The evolution of light-skin pigmentation among Eurasians is considered as an adaptation to the high-latitude environments. East Asians are ideal populations for studying skin color evolution because of the complex environment of East Asia. Here, we report a strong selection signal for the pigmentation gene phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) in light-skinned Han Chinese individuals. The intron mutation rs10778203 in PAH is enriched in East Asians and is significantly associated with skin color of the back of the hand in Han Chinese males (P < 0.05). In vitro luciferase and transcription factor binding assays show that the ancestral allele of rs10778203 could bind to SMAD2 and has a significant enhancer activity for PAH. However, the derived T allele (the major allele in East Asians) of rs10778203 decreases the binding activity of transcription factors and enhancer activity. Meanwhile, the derived T allele of rs10778203 shows a weaker ultraviolet radiation response in A375 cells and zebrafish embryos. Furthermore, rs10778203 decreases melanin production in transgenic zebrafish embryos after ultraviolet B (UVB) treatment. Collectively, PAH is a potential pigmentation gene that regulates skin tanning ability. Electricity-driven oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a highly attractive strategy for biomass transformation. However, achieving industrial-grade current densities remains a great challenge. Herein, by modulating the water content in a solvothermal system, Ni 3 S 2 /NF with stabilized and shorter Ni-S bonds as well as a tunable coordination environment of Ni sites was fabricated. The prepared Ni 3 S 2 /NF was highly efficient for electrocatalytic oxidation of HMF to produce FDCA, and the FDCA yield and Faraday efficiency could reach 98.8% and 97.6% at the HMF complete conversion. More importantly, an industrial-grade current density of 1000 mA cm -2 could be achieved at a potential of only 1.45 V vs. RHE for HMFOR and the current density could exceed 500 mA cm -2 with other bio-based compounds as the reactants. The excellent performance of Ni 3 S 2 /NF originated from the shorter Ni-S bonds and its better electrochemical properties, which significantly promoted the dehydrogenation step of oxidizing HMF. Besides, the gram-scale FDCA production could be realized on Ni 3 S 2 /NF in a MEA reactor. As modern humans ventured out of Africa and dispersed around the world, they faced novel environmental challenges that led to geographic adaptations including skin colour. Over the long history of human evolution, skin colour has changed dramatically, showing tremendous diversity across different geographical regions, for example, the majority of individuals from the expansive lands of Africa have darker skin, whereas the majority of people from Eurasia exhibit lighter skin. What adaptations did lighter skin confer upon modern humans as they migrated from Africa to Eurasia? What genetic mechanisms underlie the diversity of skin colour observed in different populations? In recent years, scientists have gradually gained a deeper understanding of the interactions between pigmentation gene and skin colour through population-based genomic studies of different groups around the world, particularly in East Asia and Africa. In this review, we summarize our current understanding of 26 skin colour-related pigmentation genes and 48 SNPs that influence skin colour. Important pigmentation genes across three major populations are described in detail: MFSD12, SLC24A5, PDPK1 and DDB1/CYB561A3/TMEM138 influence skin colour in African populations; OCA2, KITLG, SLC24A2, GNPAT and PAH are key to the evolution of skin pigmentation in East Asian populations; and SLC24A5, SLC45A2, TYR, TYRP1, ASIP, MC1R and IRF4 significantly contribute to the lightening of skin colour in European populations. Highly porous light absorbers are fabricated based on polypyrrole (PPy)-coated carbon nanotube (CNT). Carbon nanotube sponge (CNTS) or carbon nanotube array (CNTA) with three-dimensional (3D) network structure is the framework of porous light absorbers. Both PPy@CNTS and PPy@CNTA composites exhibit excellent light absorption of the full solar spectrum. The CNTS and CNTA with porous structures have extremely large effective surface area for light absorption and for water evaporation that has great practical benefit to the solar-driven vapor generation. The PPy layer on CNT sidewalls significantly improves the hydrophilicity of porous CNTS and CNTA. The good wettability of water on CNT sidewalls makes water transport in porous CNT materials highly efficient. The PPy@CNTS and PPy@CNTA light absorbers achieve high water evaporation rates of 3.35 and 3.41 kg m -2 h -1 , respectively, under 1-sun radiation. The orientation of nano channels in CNTA-based light absorbers also plays an important role in the solar-driven vapor generation. The water transport and vapor escape are more efficient in CNTA-based light absorbers as compared to the CNTS-based light absorbers due to the relatively short path for the water transport and the vapor escape in CNTA-based light absorbers., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

Background: Myopia is one of the eye diseases that can damage the vision of young people. This study aimed to explore the protective role of miR-92b-3p against DNA damage and apoptosis in retinal tissues of negative lens-induced myopic (LIM) guinea pigs by targeting BTG2., Methods: Biometric measurements of ocular parameters, flash electroretinogram (FERG), and retinal thickness (RT) were performed after miR-92b-3p intravitreal injection in LIM guinea pigs. The apoptotic rate was detected by Annexin V-FITC/PI double staining, and the change in mitochondrial membrane potential was measured by JC-1 staining. Retinal apoptosis and expression of p53, BTG2, and CDK2 were explored by TdT-mediated dUTP-biotin nick labeling (TUNEL) and immunofluorescence staining assays, respectively. BTG2 and its upstream and downstream molecules at gene and protein levels in retinal tissues were measured by real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) and Western blotting., Results: Compared with normal controls (NC), the ocular axial length of LIM guinea pig significantly increased, whereas refraction decreased. Meanwhile, dMax-a and -b wave amplitudes of ERG declined, retinal thickness was decreased, the number of apoptotic cells and apoptotic rate in LIM eyes was exaggerated, and the mitochondrial membrane potential significantly decreased. In addition, results of qPCR and Western blot assays showed that the expression levels of p53, BTG2, CDK2, and BAX in LIM guinea pigs were higher than the levels of the NC group, whereas the BCL-2 expression level was decreased. By contrast, the miR-92b-3p intravitreal injection in LIM guinea pigs could significantly inhibit axial elongation, alleviate DNA damage and apoptosis, and thus protect guinea pigs against myopia., Conclusion: In conclusion, p53 and BTG2 were activated in the retinal tissue of myopic guinea pigs, and the activated BTG2 could elevate the expression of CDK2 and BAX, and attenuate the expression of BCL-2, which in turn promote apoptosis and eventually lead to retinal thinning and impaired visual function in myopic guinea pigs. In the sixth generation (6G) era, intelligent machine network (IMN) applications, such as intelligent transportation, require collaborative machines with communication, sensing, and computation (CSC) capabilities. This article proposes an integrated communication, sensing, and computation (ICSAC) framework for 6G to achieve the reciprocity among CSC functions to enhance the reliability and latency of communication, accuracy and timeliness of sensing information acquisition, and privacy and security of computing to realize the IMN applications. Specifically, the sensing and communication functions can merge into unified platforms using the same transmit signals, and the acquired real-time sensing information can be exploited as prior information for intelligent algorithms to enhance the performance of communication networks. This is called the computing-empowered integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) reciprocity. Such reciprocity can further improve the performance of distributed computation with the assistance of networked sensing capability, which is named the sensing-empowered integrated communications and computation (ICAC) reciprocity. The above ISAC and ICAC reciprocities can enhance each other iteratively and finally lead to the ICSAC reciprocity. To achieve these reciprocities, we explore the potential enabling technologies for the ICSAC framework. Finally, we present the evaluation results of crucial enabling technologies to show the feasibility of the ICSAC framework.

Thermophilic anaerobic digestion (TAD) represents a promising biotechnology for both methane energy production and waste stream treatment. However, numerous critical microorganisms and their metabolic characteristics involved in this process remain unidentified due to the limitations of culturable isolates. This study investigated the phylogenetic composition and potential metabolic traits of bacteria and methanogenic archaea in a TAD system using culture-independent metagenomics. Predominant microorganisms identified in the stable phase of TAD included hydrogenotrophic methanogens (Methanothermobacter and Methanosarcina) and hydrogen-producing bacteria (Coprothermobacter, Acetomicrobium, and Defluviitoga). Nine major metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) associated with the dominant genera were selected to infer their metabolic potentials. Genes related to thermal resistance were widely found in all nine major MAGs, such as the molecular chaperone genes, Clp protease gene, and RNA polymerase genes, which may contribute to their predominance under thermophilic condition. Thermophilic temperatures may increase the hydrogen partial pressure of Coprothermobacter, Acetomicrobium, and Defluviitoga, subsequently altering the primary methanogenesis pathway from acetoclastic pathway to hydrogenotrophic pathway in the TAD. Consequently, genes encoding the hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis pathway were the most abundant in the recovered archaeal MAGs. In this paper, the problem of joint transmission and computation resource allocation for a multi-user probabilistic semantic communication (PSC) network is investigated. In the considered model, users employ semantic information extraction techniques to compress their large-sized data before transmitting them to a multi-antenna base station (BS). Our model represents large-sized data through substantial knowledge graphs, utilizing shared probability graphs between the users and the BS for efficient semantic compression. The resource allocation problem is formulated as an optimization problem with the objective of maximizing the sum of the equivalent rate of all users, considering the total power budget and semantic resource limit constraints. The computation load considered in the PSC network is formulated as a non-smooth piecewise function with respect to the semantic compression ratio. To tackle this non-convex non-smooth optimization challenge, a three-stage algorithm is proposed, where the solutions for the received beamforming matrix of the BS, the transmit power of each user, and the semantic compression ratio of each user are obtained stage by stage. The numerical results validate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme.

The rapid advancement of modern communication technologies necessitates the development of generalized multi-access frameworks and the continuous implementation of rate splitting, augmented with semantic awareness. This trend, coupled with the mounting pressure on wireless services, underscores the need for intelligent approaches to radio signal propagation. In response to these challenges, intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) have garnered significant attention for their ability to control data transmission systems in a goal-oriented and dynamic manner. This innovation is largely attributed to equitable resource allocation and the dynamic enhancement of network performance. However, the integration of rate-splitting multi-access (RSMA) architecture with semantic considerations imposes stringent requirements on IRS platforms to ensure seamless connectivity and broad coverage for a diverse user base without interference. Semantic communications hinge on a knowledge base-a centralized repository of integrated information related to the transmitted data-which becomes critically important in multi-antenna scenarios. This article proposes a novel set of design strategies for RSMA-IRS systems, enabled by reconfigurable intelligent surface synergizing with semantic communication principles. An experimental analysis is presented, demonstrating the effectiveness of these design guidelines in the context of Beyond 5G/6G communication systems. The RSMA-IRS model, infused with semantic communication, offers a promising solution for future wireless networks. Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) contained in sludge, such as carbamazepine, may be toxic to microorganisms and affect the biogenesis of methane during anaerobic digestion. In this study, different scales of anaerobic digesters were constructed to investigate the inhibitory effect of carbamazepine. Results showed that carbamazepine reduced methane production by 11.3 % and 62.1 % at concentrations of 0.4 and 2 mg/g TS, respectively. Carbamazepine hindered the dissolution of organic matter and the degradation of protein. Carbamazepine inhibited some fermentative bacteria, especially uncultured Aminicenantales, whose abundance decreased by 9.5-93.4 % under carbamazepine stress. It is worth noting that most prior studies investigated the effects of CECs only based on well-known microorganisms, ignoring the metabolisms of uncultured microorganisms. Genome-predicted metabolic potential suggested that 54 uncultured metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) associated with acidogenesis or acetogenesis. Therein, uncultured Aminicenantales related MAGs were proved to be acetogenic fermenters, their significant reduction may be an important reason for the decrease of methane production under carbamazepine stress. The toxicity of carbamazepine to microorganisms was mainly related to the overproduction of reactive oxygen species. Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with lightweight, high shielding effectiveness, excellent chemical stability, especially minimized secondary electromagnetic pollution, are urgently desired for integrated electronic systems operating in harsh working environments. Here in this study, by systematically engineering and matching the interfacial properties of carbon-based membrane materials, i.e., graphite paper, whisker carbon nanotube paper (WCNT paper), carbon nanotube film (CNT film), bucky paper (BP), and carbon cloth (CC) with three-dimensional (3D) porous carbon nanotube sponge (CNTS), we successfully constructed a series of multifunctional all-carbon EMI shielding materials, which exhibit excellent average shielding effectiveness of over 90 dB with a thickness of about 1 mm and dramatically minimized secondary electromagnetic reflection. Moreover, benefiting from the all-carbon nature and engineered interfaces, our CMC materials also exhibit excellent photothermal and Joule heating performances. These results not only provide guidance for designing advanced multifunctional all-carbon EMI shielding materials but also shed light on the hidden mechanism between interfaces and performances of composite materials.

Foaming pretreatment has been proven effective in promoting sludge drying, however, the variation in sludge properties significantly influences the foaming efficiency. Inspired by foam stabilizer of solid particles, Camellia oleifera shells (COS) was screened out from various biomasses as an additive incorporated with the CaO for promoting the sludge foaming. For the introduction of COS, this study analyzed the drying behaviors of foamed sludge, quantified the surface cracks information, characterized the combustion performance, and evaluated the energy consumption. The results indicated that 46.72-50.10% of time could be saved in foaming the sludge to 0.70 g/mL by addition of 3.0 wt% COS. Compared with the original sludge (OS), the 0.70 g/mL foamed sludge saved 47.43% of time for sludge drying at 80 °C, and this value further increased to 53.14% with 3.0 wt% COS addition. Combining the multifractal spectra and drying kinetics analysis, the foaming promoted the formation of complex surface cracks in the warm-up period, while COS further improved the complexity of cracks in the constant rate period, and the shrinkage of isolated sludge blocks in the falling rate period, thus enhanced the moisture diffusion and heat transfer. Furthermore, the appropriate porous structure and additional volatile matters promoted the combustion performance. The 0.90 g/mL foamed sludge with COS presented the lowest activation energy of 180.362 kJ/mol in combustion. The deterministic generation of individual color centers with defined orientations or types in solid-state systems is paramount for advancements in quantum technologies. Silicon vacancies in 4H-silicon carbide (4H-SiC) can be formed in V1 and V2 types. However, silicon vacancies are typically generated randomly between V1 and V2 types with similar probabilities. Here, we show that the preferred V2 centers can be selectively generated by focused ion beam (FIB) implantation on the m -plane in 4H-SiC. When implantation is on the m -plane ( a -plane), the generation probability ratio between V1 and V2 centers increase exponentially (remains constant) with decreasing FIB fluences. With a fluence of 10 ions/spot, the probability to generate V2 centers is seven times higher than V1 centers. Our results represent a critical step toward the deterministic creation of specific defect types.

The Nickel-based catalysts have a good catalytic effect on the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural electrooxidation reaction (HMFOR), but limited by the conversion potential of Ni 2+ /Ni 3+ , 1.35 V versus RHE, the HMF electrooxidation potential of nickel-based catalysts is generally greater than 1.35 V versus RHE. Considering fluorine has the highest Pauling electronegativity and similar atomic radius of oxygen, the introduction of fluorine into the lattice of metal oxides might promote the adsorption of intermediate species, thus improving the catalytic performance. F is successfully doped into the lattice structure of NiCo 2 O 4 spinel oxide by the strategy of hydrothermal reaction and low-temperature fluorination. As is confirmed by in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, the introduction of F weakens the interaction force of metal-oxygen covalent bonds of the asymmetric M T -O-M O backbone and improves the valence of Ni in tetrahedra structure, which makes it easier to be oxidized to higher valence active Ni 3+ under the action of electric field and promotes the adsorption of OH - , while the decrease of Co valence enhances the adsorption of HMF with the catalyst. Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli serotypes are associated with various clinical syndromes, yet the precise correlation between serotype and pathotype remains unclear. A major barrier to such studies is the reliance on antisera-based serotyping, which is culture-dependent, low-throughput, and cost-ineffective. We have established a highly multiplex PCR-based serotyping assay, termed the MeltArray E. coli serotyping ( EST ) assay, capable of identifying 163 O-antigen-encoding genes and 53 H-antigen-encoding genes of E. coli . The assay successfully identified serotypes directly from both simulated and real fecal samples, as demonstrated through spike-in validation experiments and a retrospective study. In a multi-province study involving 637 E. coli strains, it revealed that the five major diarrheagenic pathotypes have distinct serotype compositions. Notably, it differentiated 257 Shigella isolates into four major Shigella species, distinguishing them from enteroinvasive E. coli based on their distinct serotype profiles. The assay's universality was further corroborated by in silico analysis of whole-genome sequences from the EnteroBase. We conclude that the MeltArray EST assay represents a paradigm-shifting tool for molecular serotyping of E. coli , with potential routine applications for comprehensive serotype analysis, disease diagnosis, and outbreak detection.

Antimicrobial resistance is a global health security issue of widespread concern. Recent studies have unveiled the potential contribution of non-antibiotics to the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. This study investigated the effect of carbamazepine, a non-antibiotic pharmaceutical, on the fate of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during anaerobic digestion. The results, as revealed by both metagenomic sequencing and absolute quantification, demonstrated that carbamazepine induced the enrichment of ARGs and increased the abundance of ARGs hosts by 1.2-2.1 times. Carbamazepine facilitated microbial aggregation and intercellular communication by upregulating functional genes associated with two-component systems, quorum sensing and type IV secretion systems, thereby increasing the frequency of ARGs conjugation. Furthermore, carbamazepine induced the acquisition of ARGs by pathogens and elevated the overall pathogenic abundance. Objective. Head motion correction (MC) is an essential process in brain positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. We have used the Polaris Vicra, an optical hardware-based motion tracking (HMT) device, for PET head MC. However, this requires attachment of a marker to the subject's head. Markerless HMT (MLMT) methods are more convenient for clinical translation than HMT with external markers. In this study, we validated the United Imaging Healthcare motion tracking (UMT) MLMT system using phantom and human point source studies, and tested its effectiveness on eight 18 F-FPEB and four 11 C-LSN3172176 human studies, with frame-based region of interest (ROI) analysis. We also proposed an evaluation metric, registration quality ( RQ ), and compared it to a data-driven evaluation method, motion-corrected centroid-of-distribution (MCCOD). Approach. UMT utilized a stereovision camera with infrared structured light to capture the subject's real-time 3D facial surface. Each point cloud, acquired at up to 30 Hz, was registered to the reference cloud using a rigid-body iterative closest point registration algorithm. Main results. In the phantom point source study, UMT exhibited superior reconstruction results than the Vicra with higher spatial resolution (0.35 ± 0.27 mm) and smaller residual displacements (0.12 ± 0.10 mm). In the human point source study, UMT achieved comparable performance as Vicra on spatial resolution with lower noise. Moreover, UMT achieved comparable ROI values as Vicra for all the human studies, with negligible mean standard uptake value differences, while no MC results showed significant negative bias. The RQ evaluation metric demonstrated the effectiveness of UMT and yielded comparable results to MCCOD. Significance. We performed an initial validation of a commercial MLMT system against the Vicra. As an important ecological-economic development area in China, scientific understanding of the spatial and temporal changes in eco-environment quality (EEQ) and its drivers in the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) is crucial for the effective implementation of ecological protection projects in the YRB. To address the lack of large-scale EEQ assessment in the YRB, this paper uses the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform and the Remote Sensing Ecological Index (RSEI) to investigate the spatial and temporal characteristics of EEQ in the YRB from 2000 to 2020, and to analyze the impact of various factors on the EEQ of the YRB. This study showed that: (1) The overall EEQ of YRB was at the 'good' grade over the past 20 years, showing an increasing trend, with the value changing from 0.70 to 0.77. (2) The YRB's EEQ has positive spatial aggregation characteristics, with the northern part of the Jialing River basin and the Han River basin exhibiting a high-high aggregation type and the upper reaches exhibiting a low-low aggregation type. (3) In the past 20 years, the human activities had a greater impact on the EEQ of the YRB; moreover, all factors had a greater impact on the EEQ than a single factor. Nitrite (NO 2 - ) accumulation caused by nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) inhibition in nitrification is a double-edged sword, i.e., a disaster in aquatic environments but a hope for innovating nitrogen removal technology in wastewater treatment. However, little information is available regarding the molecular mechanism of NOB inhibition at the cellular level. Herein, we investigate the response of NOB inhibition on NO 2 - accumulation established by a side-stream free ammonia treatment unit in a nitrifying reactor using integrated metagenomics and metaproteomics. Results showed that compared with the baseline, the relative abundance and activity of NOB in the experimental stage decreased by 91.64 and 68.66%, respectively, directly resulting in a NO 2 - accumulation rate of 88%. Moreover, RNA polymerase, translation factors, and aa-tRNA ligase were significantly downregulated, indicating that protein synthesis in NOB was interfered during NO 2 - accumulation. Further investigations showed that ribosomal proteins and GTPases, responsible for bindings between either ribosomal proteins and rRNA or ribosome subunits, were remarkably downregulated. This suggests that ribosome biogenesis was severely disrupted, which might be the key reason for the inhibited protein synthesis. Our findings fill a knowledge gap regarding the underlying mechanisms of NO 2 - accumulation, which would be beneficial for regulating the accumulation of NO 2 - in aquatic environments and engineered systems.

Single UAVs have limited capabilities for complex missions, so suitable solutions are needed to improve the mission success rate, as well as the UAVs' survivability. A cooperative multi-UAV formation offers great advantages in this regard; however, for large and complex systems, the traditional control methods will be invalid when faced with unstable and changing environments. To deal with the poor self-adaptability and high requirements for the environmental state information of traditional control methods for a multi-UAV cluster, this paper proposes a consistent round-up strategy based on PPO path optimization to track targets. In this strategy, the leader is trained using PPO for obstacle avoidance and target tracking, while the followers are expected to establish a communication network with the leader to obtain environmental information. In this way, the tracking control law can be designed, based on the consistency protocol and the Apollonian circle, to realize the round-up of the target and obstacle avoidance. The experimental results show that the proposed strategy can achieve the round-up of the target UAV and guide the pursuing multi-UAV group to avoid obstacles in the absence of the initial detection of the target. In multiple simulated scenarios, the success rates of the pursuit multi-UAV cluster for rounding up the target are maintained above 80%.

In this study, we present a flexible wearable supernumerary robotic limb that helps chronic stroke patients with finger rehabilitation and grasping movements. The design of this innovative limb draws inspiration from bending pneumatic muscles and the unique characteristics of an elephant's trunk tip. It places a strong emphasis on crucial factors such as lightweight construction, safety, compliance, waterproofing, and achieving a high output-to-weight/pressure ratio. The proposed structure enables the robotic limb to perform both envelope and fingertip grasping. Human-robot interaction is facilitated through a flexible bending sensor, detecting the wearer's finger movements and connecting them to motion control via a threshold segmentation method. Additionally, the system is portable for versatile daily use. To validate the effectiveness of this innovation, real-world experiments involving six chronic stroke patients and three healthy volunteers were conducted. The feedback received through questionnaires indicates that the designed mechanism holds immense promise in assisting chronic stroke patients with their daily grasping activities, potentially improving their quality of life and rehabilitation outcomes.

Microorganisms play a critical role in the biogeochemical cycling of selenium (Se) in aquatic environments, particularly in reducing the toxicity and bioavailability of selenite (Se(IV)). This study aimed to identify putative Se(IV)-reducing bacteria (Se IV RB) and investigate the genetic mechanisms underlying Se(IV) reduction in anoxic Se-rich sediment. Initial microcosm incubation confirmed that Se(IV) reduction was driven by heterotrophic microorganisms. DNA stable-isotope probing (DNA-SIP) analysis identified Pseudomonas, Geobacter, Comamonas, and Anaeromyxobacter as putative Se IV RB. High-quality metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) affiliated with these four putative Se IV RB were retrieved. Annotation of functional gene indicated that these MAGs contained putative Se(IV)-reducing genes such as DMSO reductase family, fumarate and sulfite reductases. Metatranscriptomic analysis of active Se(IV)-reducing cultures revealed significantly higher transcriptional levels of genes associated with DMSO reductase (serA/PHGDH), fumarate reductase (sdhCD/frdCD), and sulfite reductase (cysDIH) compared to those in cultures not amended with Se(IV), suggesting that these genes played important roles in Se(IV) reduction. The current study expands our knowledge of the genetic mechanisms involved in less-understood anaerobic Se(IV) bio-reduction. Tibetans are the ideal population to study genetic adaptation in extreme environments. Here, we performed systematic phenotyping of 11,880 highlanders, covering 133 quantitative traits of 13 organ systems. We provided a comprehensive phenotypic atlas by comparing altitude adaptation and altitude acclimatization. We found the differences between adaptation and acclimatization are quantitative rather than qualitative, with a whole-system "blunted effect" seen in the adapted Tibetans. We characterized twelve different functional changes between adaptation and acclimatization. More importantly, we established a landscape of adaptive phenotypes of indigenous Tibetans, including 45 newly identified Tibetan adaptation-nominated traits, involving specific changes of Tibetans in internal organ state, metabolism, eye morphology, and skin pigmentation. In addition, we observed a sex-biased pattern between altitude acclimatization and adaptation. Carbonated beverages are characterized by low temperatures, multiple microbubbles, high pressure, and an acidic environment, creating ideal conditions for releasing contaminants from plastic bottles. However, the release patterns of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) are poorly understood. We investigated the effects of plastic type, CO 2 filling volume, temperature, sugar content, and additive on the leakage of MPs/NPs and heavy metals. Our results showed that polypropylene bottles released greater MPs (234±9.66 particles/L) and NPs (9.21±0.73 × 10 7 particles/L) than polyethylene and polyethylene terephthalate bottles. However, subjecting the plastic bottles to 3 repeated inflation treatments resulted in 91.65-93.18% removal of MPs/NPs. The release of MPs/NPs increased with increasing CO 2 filling volume, driven by the synergistic effect of CO 2 bubbles and pressure. After 4 freeze-thaw cycles, the release of MPs and NPs significantly increased, reaching 450±38.65 MPs and 2.91±0.10 × 10 8 NPs per liter, respectively. The presence of sugar leads to an elevation in MPs release compared to sucrose-free carbonated water, while the addition of additives to carbonated water exhibits negligible effects on MPs release. Interestingly, actual carbonated beverages demonstrated higher MPs concentrations (260.52±27.18-281.38±61.33 particles/L) than those observed in our well-controlled experimental setup. Our study highlights the non-negligible risk of MPs/NPs in carbonated beverages at low temperatures and suggests strategies to mitigate human ingestion of MPs/NPs, such as selecting appropriate plastic materials, high-pressure carbonated water pretreatment, and minimizing freeze-thaw cycles. Aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs) have been highlighted as a potential alternative to lithium-ion batteries for large-scale energy storage due to the abundant reserve, light weight, low cost, and good safety of Al. However, the development of AIBs faces challenges due to the usage of AlCl 3 -based ionic liquid electrolytes, which are expensive, corrosive, and sensitive to humidity. Here, we develop a low-cost, non-corrosive, and air-stable hydrated eutectic electrolyte composed of aluminum perchlorate nonahydrate and methylurea (MU) ligand. Through optimizing the molar ratio to achieve the unique solvation structure, the formed Al(ClO 4 ) 3 ·9H 2 O/MU hydrated deep eutectic electrolyte (AMHEE) with an average coordination number of 2.4 can facilely realize stable and reversible deposition/stripping of Al. When combining with vanadium oxide nanorods positive electrode, the Al-ion full battery delivers a high discharge capacity of 320 mAh g -1 with good capacity retention. The unique solvation structure with a low desolvation energy of the AMHEE enables Al 3+ insertion/extraction during charge/discharge processes, which is evidenced by in situ synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the regulatory role of the PI3K/AKT/ERK signaling pathway in retinal fibrosis in -6.0 diopter (D) lens-induced myopic (LIM) guinea pigs., Methods: Biological measurements of eye tissues were performed on guinea pigs to obtain their refraction, axial length, retinal thickness, physiological function, and fundus retinal status. In addition, Masson staining and immunohistochemical (IHC) assay were further done to explore the changes in retinal morphology after myopic induction. Meanwhile, hydroxyproline (HYP) content was measured to evaluate the degree of retinal fibrosis. Moreover, the levels of the PI3K/AKT/ERK signaling pathway and fibrosis-related molecules in retinal tissues including matrix metalloproteinase 2(MMP2), collagen type I (Collagen I), and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) were detected by real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) and Western blot., Results: The LIM guinea pigs showed a significant myopic shift in refractive error and an increase in axial length compared with those of the normal control (NC) group. Masson staining, hydroxyproline content determination, and IHC showed an increase in retinal fibrosis. After myopic induction, qPCR and western blot analyses showed that phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase catalytic subunit α (PIK3CA), protein kinase B (AKT), extracellular regulated protein kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2), MMP2, Collagen I, and α-SMA were consistently elevated in the LIM group than those in the NC group., Conclusion: The PI3K/AKT/ERK signaling pathway was activated in the retinal tissues of myopic guinea pigs, which exaggerated fibrotic lesions and reduced retinal thickness, ultimately leading to retinal physiological dysfunctions in myopic guinea pigs., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier Inc. Highly-active and low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction and evolution are essential in rechargeable metal-air batteries, and single atom catalysts with Fe-N-C are promising candidates. However, the activity still needs to be boosted, and the origination of spin-related oxygen catalytic performance is still uncertain. Herein, an effective strategy to regulate local spin state of Fe-N-C through manipulating crystal field and magnetic field is proposed. The spin state of atomic Fe can be regulated from low spin to intermediate spin and to high spin. The cavitation of d xz and d yz orbitals of high spin Fe III can optimize the O 2 adsorption and promote the rate-determining step (*O 2 to *OOH). Benefiting from these merits, the high spin Fe-N-C electrocatalyst displays the highest oxygen electrocatalytic activities. Sepsis is described as an immune response disorder of the host to infection in which microorganisms play a non-negligible role. Most survivors of sepsis experience ICU-acquired weakness, also known as septic myopathy, characterized by skeletal muscle atrophy, weakness, and irreparable damage/regenerated or dysfunctional. The mechanism of sepsis-induced myopathy is currently unclear. It has been believed that this state is triggered by circulating pathogens and their related harmful factors, leading to impaired muscle metabolism. Sepsis and its resulting alterations in the intestinal microbiota are associated with sepsis-related organ dysfunction, including skeletal muscle wasting. There are also some studies on interventions targeting the flora, including fecal microbiota transplants, the addition of dietary fiber and probiotics in enteral feeding products, etc., aiming to improve sepsis-related myopathy. Background: Lupus nephritis is a rare immunological disorder. Genetic factors are considered important in its causation. We aim to systematically investigate the rare pathogenic gene variants in patients with lupus nephritis., Methods: Whole-exome sequencing was used to screen pathogenic gene variants in 1886 probands with lupus nephritis. Variants were interpreted on the basis of known pathogenic variants or the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics guidelines and studied by functional analysis, including RNA sequencing, quantitative PCR, cytometric bead array, and Western blotting., Results: Mendelian form of lupus nephritis was confirmed in 71 probands, involving 63 variants in 39 pathogenic genes. The detection yield was 4%. The pathogenic genes enriched in nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB), type I interferon, phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase/serine/threonine kinase Akt (PI3K/AKT), Ras GTPase/mitogen-activated protein kinase (RAS/MAPK), and Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT) pathways. Clinical manifestation patterns were diverse among different signaling pathways. More than 50% of the pathogenic gene variants were reported to be associated with lupus or lupus nephritis for the first time. The identified pathogenic gene variants of lupus nephritis overlapped with those of autoinflammatory and immunodeficiency diseases. Inflammatory signatures, such as cytokine levels of IL-6, IL-8, IL-1 β , IFN α , IFN γ , and IP10 in serum and transcriptional levels of interferon-stimulated genes in blood, were significantly higher in patients with pathogenic gene variants compared with controls. Mobile genetic elements (MGEs) mediated horizontal gene transfer is the primary reason for the propagation of antibiotic resistance genes in environment. The behavior of MGEs under magnetic biochar pressure in sludge anaerobic digestion (AD) is still unknown. This study evaluated the effects of different dosage magnetic biochar on the MGEs in AD reactors. The results showed that the biogas yield was highest (106.68 ± 1.16 mL g -1 VS added ) with adding optimal dosage of magnetic biochar (25 mg g -1 TS added ), due to it increased the microorganism's abundance involved in hydrolysis and methanogenesis. While, the total absolute abundance of MGEs in the reactors with magnetic biochar addition increased by 11.58%-77.37% compared with the blank reactor. When the dosage of magnetic biochar was 12.5 mg g -1 TS added , the relative abundance of most MGEs was the highest. The enrichment effect on ISCR1 was the most significant, and the enrichment rate reached 158.90-214.16%. Only the intI1 abundance was reduced and the removal rates yield 14.38-40.00%, which was inversely proportional to the dosage of magnetic biochar. Co-occurrence network explored that Proteobacteria (35.64%), Firmicutes (19.80%) and Actinobacteriota (15.84%) were the main potential host of MGEs. Magnetic biochar changed MGEs abundance by affecting the potential MGEs-host community structure and abundance. Redundancy analysis and variation partitioning analysis showed that the combined effect of polysaccharides, protein and sCOD exhibited the greatest contribution (accounted for 34.08%) on MGEs variation. Norovirus (NoV) is an important cause of viral acute gastroenteritis (AGE). To gain insights into the epidemiological characteristics and genetic diversity of NoV among children in Hubei, 1216 stool samples from children (≤ 5 years) obtained under AGE surveillance from January 2017 to December 2019 were analyzed. The results showed that NoV was responsible for 14.64% of AGE cases, with the highest detection rate in children aged 7-12 months (19.76%). Statistically significant differences were found between male and female infection rates (χ2 ​= ​8.108, P ​= ​0.004). Genetic analysis of RdRp and VP1 sequences showed that NoV GII genotypes were GII.4 Sydney [P31] (34.35%), GII.3 [P12] (25.95%), GII.2 [P16] (22.90%), GII.4 Sydney [P16] (12.98%), GII.17 [P17] (2.29%), GII.6 [P7] and GII.3 [P16] (each at 0.76%). GII.17 [P17] variants were divided into the Kawasaki323-like lineage and the Kawasaki308-like lineage. A unique recombination event was detected between strains of GII.4 Sydney 2012 and GII.4 Sydney 2016. Significantly, all GII.P16 sequences associated with GII.4/GII.2 obtained in Hubei were correlated with novel GII.2 [P16] variants that re-emerged in Germany in 2016. Antigenic site analysis of complete VP1 sequences from all GII.4 variants from Hubei identified notable variable residues of antibody epitopes. There are increasing epilepsy patients suffering from the pain of seizure onsets, and effective prediction of seizures could improve their quality of life. To obtain high sensitivity for epileptic seizure prediction, current studies generally need complex feature extraction operations, which heavily depends on the artificial experience (or domain knowledge) and is highly subjective. To address these issues, in this paper we propose an end-to-end epileptic seizure prediction approach based on the long short-term memory network (LSTM). In the new method, only the gamma band of raw electroencephalography (EEG) signals is extracted as network input directly for seizure prediction, thus avoiding subjective and expensive feature design process. Despite its simplicity, the proposed method achieves the mean sensitivity of 91.76% and false prediction rate (FPR) of 0.29/h on Children's Hospital Boston-MIT (CHB-MIT) scalp EEG Database, respectively, when identifying the preictal stage from the EEG signals. Furthermore, different from traditional methods that only consider the classification of preictal and interictal EEG, we introduce the postictal stage as an extra class in the proposed method. As a result, the performance of seizure prediction is further improved, obtaining a higher sensitivity of 92.17% and a low FPR of 0.27/h. Electron shuttles (ES) can mediate long-distance electron transfer between extracellular respiratory bacteria (ERB) and the surroundings. However, the effects of graphite structure in ES on the extracellular electron transfer (EET) process remain ambiguous. This work investigated the function of graphite structure in the process of nitrobenzene (NB) degradation by Geobacter sulfurreducens PCA, in which highly aromatic carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was studied as a typical ES. The results showed that the addition of 1.5 g L -1 of CNTs improved the NB biodegradation up to 81.2%, plus 18.8% NB loss due to the adsorption property of CNTs, achieving complete removal of 200 μM NB within 9 h. The amendment of CNTs greatly increased the EET rate, indicating that graphite structure exhibited excellent electron shuttle performance. Furthermore, Raman spectrum proved that CNTs obtained better graphite structure after 90 h of cultivation with strain PCA, resulting in higher electrochemical performance. Also, CNTs was perceived as the "Contaminant Reservoir", which alleviated the toxic effect of NB and shortened the distance of EET process.
