Ultraviolet (UV) radiation influences development and genome stability in organisms; however, its impact on meiosis, a special cell division essential for the delivery of genetic information across generations in eukaryotes, has not yet been elucidated. In this study, by performing cytogenetic studies, we reported that UV radiation does not damage meiotic chromosome integrity but attenuates centromere-mediated chromosome stability and induces unreduced gametes in Arabidopsis thaliana. We showed that functional centromere-specific histone 3 (CENH3) is required for obligate crossover formation and plays a role in the protection of sister chromatid cohesion under UV stress. Moreover, we found that UV specifically alters the orientation and organization of spindles and phragmoplasts at meiosis II, resulting in meiotic restitution and unreduced gametes. We determined that UV-induced meiotic restitution does not rely on the UV Resistance Locus8-mediated UV perception and the Tapetal Development and Function1- and Aborted Microspores-dependent tapetum development, but possibly occurs via altered JASON function and downregulated Parallel Spindle1. The recently emerged BA.2.86, JN.1, EG.5, EG.5.1, and HV.1 variants have a growth advantage. In this study, we explore the structural bases of receptor binding and immune evasion for the Omicron BA.2.86, JN.1, EG.5, EG.5.1, and HV.1 sub-variants. Our findings reveal that BA.2.86 exhibits strong receptor binding, whereas its JN.1 sub-lineage displays a decreased binding affinity to human ACE2 (hACE2). Through complex structure analyses, we observed that the reversion of R493Q in BA.2.86 receptor binding domain (RBD) plays a facilitating role in receptor binding, while the L455S substitution in JN.1 RBD restores optimal affinity. Furthermore, the structure of monoclonal antibody (mAb) S309 complexed with BA.2.86 RBD highlights the importance of the K356T mutation, which brings a new N-glycosylation motif, altering the binding pattern of mAbs belonging to RBD-5 represented by S309. Intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) modeling is a widely used double-exponential model for describing diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) signal, with a slow component related to pure molecular diffusion and a fast component associated with microcirculatory perfusion, which compensates for the limitations of traditional DWI. IVIM is a noninvasive technique for obtaining liver pathological information and characterizing liver lesions, and has potential applications in the initial diagnosis and treatment monitoring of liver diseases. Recent studies have demonstrated that IVIM-derived parameters are useful for evaluating liver lesions, including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), liver fibrosis and liver tumors. However, the results are not stable. Therefore, it is necessary to summarize the current applications of IVIM in liver disease research, identify existing shortcomings, and point out the future development direction. In this review, we searched for studies related to hepatic IVIM-DWI applications over the past two decades in the PubMed database. We first introduce the fundamental principles and influential factors of IVIM, and then discuss its application in NAFLD, liver fibrosis, and focal hepatic lesions. It has been found that IVIM is still unstable in ensuring the robustness and reproducibility of measurements in the assessment of liver fibrosis grade and liver tumors differentiation, due to inconsistent and substantial overlap in the range of IVIM-derived parameters for different fibrotic stages. In the end, the future direction of IVIM-DWI in the assessment of liver diseases is discussed, emphasizing the need for further research on the stability of IVIM-derived parameters, particularly perfusion-related parameters, in order to promote the clinical practice of IVIM-DWI. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the burden of kidney dysfunction (KD), assess socioeconomic inequalities, and project trends in the future., Methods: Data on deaths, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and years of life lost (YLLs) were from Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. The Joinpoint regression model was utilized to analyze the temporal trend by the annual percentage change (APC). The slope index and concentration index were employed to evaluate cross-country disparities. The future trend was predicted using an age-period-cohort analysis., Results: In the past three decades, the death numbers of KD increased from 1,571,720 to 3,161,552, DALYs from 42,090,331 to 76,486,945, YLDs from 5,003,267 to 11,282,484, and YLLs from 37,087,065 to 65,204,461, respectively. The age-standardized rate (ASR) of deaths, DALYs, and YLLs exhibited a declining trend. The ASR of YLDs increased until 2017, then decreased. The slope index and concentration index for DALYs increased from 248.1 to 351.9 and from 40.70 to 57.8. In the future, the ASR of deaths, DALYs, YLDs, and YLLs will remain stable, while their numbers will continue to rise, except for YLLs., Conclusions: The disease burden of KD remained serious. Despite extensive study, geochemical modeling often fails to accurately predict lead (Pb) immobilization in environmental samples. This study employs the Charge Distribution MUlti-SIte Complexation (CD-MUSIC) model, X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS), and density functional theory (DFT) to investigate mechanisms of phosphate (PO 4 ) induced Pb immobilization on metal (hydr)oxides. The results reveal that PO 4 mainly enhances bidentate-adsorbed Pb on goethite via electrostatic synergy at low PO 4 concentrations. At relatively low pH (below 5.5) and elevated PO 4 concentrations, the formation of the monodentate-O-sharing Pb-PO 4 ternary structure on goethite becomes important. Precipitation of hydropyromorphite (Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH) occurs at high pH and high concentrations of Pb and PO 4 , with an optimized log K sp value of -82.02. The adjustment of log K sp compared to that in the bulk solution allows for quantification of the overall Pb-PO 4 precipitation enhanced by goethite. The CD-MUSIC model parameters for both the bidentate Pb complex and the monodentate-O-sharing Pb-PO 4 ternary complex were optimized. The modeling results and parameters are further validated and specified with XAFS analysis and DFT calculations. This study provides quantitative molecular-level insights into the contributions of electrostatic enhancement, ternary complexation, and precipitation to phosphate-induced Pb immobilization on oxides, which will be helpful in resolving controversies regarding Pb distribution in environmental samples.

Objective: With this study, we aimed to estimate the disease burden attributable to child and maternal malnutrition (CMM) throughout the world between 1990 and 2019., Methods: The number, age-standardized rate, population attributable fraction of deaths, disability-adjusted life-years, years of life lost, and years lived with disability associated with CMM were estimated using the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 by age, sex, year, location, and sociodemographic index at the global level. The slope index of inequality and concentration index were employed to measure socioeconomic-related health inequalities across countries., Results: The number (million) of global deaths, disability-adjusted life-years, and years of life lost related to CMM were 2.9, 294.8, and 250.5 in 2019, showing decreases of 60.8, 57.4, and 60.7% since 1990. However, the number of years lived with CMM-related disability increased from 36.0 in 1990 to 44.3 in 2019. Additionally, the age-standardized rates of these 4 indicators showed varying degrees of decline. The global burden of CMM-related conditions differed with age and sex. The burden was the heaviest in western sub-Saharan Africa, especially in Chad. In terms of diseases, neonatal disorders represented the most significant burden attributed to CMM. Additionally, the CMM burden was more concentrated in regions with low sociodemographic indices, shown by the slope index of inequality and concentration index., Conclusions: The findings of this study highlight the ongoing global burden of CMM, particularly in terms of years lived with disability. Doping in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) has received extensive attention for its prospect in the application of photoelectric devices. Currently researchers focus on the doping ability and doping distribution in monolayer TMD and have obtained a series of achievements. Bilayer TMD has more excellent properties compared with monolayer TMD. Moreover, bilayer TMD with different stacking structures presents varying performance due to the difference in interlayer coupling. Herein, this work focuses on doping ability of dopants in different bilayer stacking structures that has not been studied yet. Results of this work show that the doping ability of V atoms in bilayer AA' and AB stacked WS 2 is different, and the doping concentration of V atoms in AB stacked WS 2 is higher than in AA' stacked WS 2 . Moreover, dopants from top and bottom layer can be distinguished by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) image. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation further confirms the doping rule. The number of thoracic vertebrae (NTV) in pigs is an important economic trait that significantly influences pork production. While the Licha black pig is a well-known Chinese pig breed with multiple thoracic vertebrae, the genetic mechanism is still unknown. Here, we performed a selective signal analysis on the genome of Licha black pigs, comparing individuals with 15 NTV versus those with 16 NTV to better understand functional genes associated with NTV. A total of 2265 selection signal regions were detected across the genome, including 527 genes and 1073 QTL that overlapped with the selection signal regions. Functional enrichment analysis revealed that LRP5 and SP5 genes were involved in biological processes such as bone morphogenesis and Wnt protein binding. Furthermore, three genes, LRP8 , DEF6 , and SCUBE3 , associated with osteoblast differentiation and bone formation, were located within or close to the QTL related to bone development and vertebrae number. These five genes were hypothesized to be potential candidates for regulating the NTV trait in Licha black pigs. Our findings revealed several candidate genes that play crucial roles in NTV regulation and provide a theoretical foundation to understand the genetic mechanism of the NTV trait in pig breeding.

Chlorobenzene (CB) is a prevalent organic contaminant in water and soil environments. It presents high chemical stability and is resistant to both oxidation and reduction. In this study, we showed that CB was substantially removed by soluble Mn(III) produced during the reductive dissolution of colloidal MnO 2 by naturally-occurring organic acids such as formate (FOR), oxalate (OX), and citrate (CIT). The removal rate was dependent on the physicochemical properties of organic acids. With strong electron-donating and coordination ability, OX and CIT promoted MnO 2 dissolution and Mn(III) generation compared to FOR, but had adverse effects on the stability and reactivity of Mn(III). As a result, CB removal followed the order: MnO 2 /CIT > MnO 2 /FOR > MnO 2 /OX. Analysis of the transformation products showed that Mn(III) complexes acted as strong electrophiles, attacking the ortho/para carbons of the benzene ring and transforming CB to chlorophenols via an electrophilic substitution mechanism. The theoretical foundation of this proposed reaction mechanism was supplemented by quantum mechanical calculations. Zinc is one of human essential metals. In this study, 101 kinds of daily food for residents, including vegetables, aquatic food, meat, fruits, rice and cereal products, pulse food, dairy products and eggs, were collected at various agricultural markets and supermarkets in Guangzhou city, China, and their zinc contents were determined. The results showed oyster is most abundant in zinc (703.5 ± 25.6 mg/kg), followed by high-zinc milk powder (58.63 ± 0.90 mg/kg), pulse food, mutton, beef and pig liver with zinc contents above 30 mg/kg. The zinc contents of rice and cereal products, milk powder, poultry, pork, some aquatic food and eggs are also relatively high (>10 mg/kg), while vegetables and fruits have zinc contents significantly below 10 mg/kg. The daily zinc intake per person was determined by considering the zinc content of various food types and the dietary habits of specific demographic groups, resulting in 12.3 mg/day for the normal person, 11.2 mg/day for low-income individual, 12.3 mg/day for middle-income individual, 13.3 mg/day for high-income individual, 10.2 mg/day for older individual, 12.9 mg/day for factory worker, 11.5 mg/day for college student, and 8.4 mg/day for kindergarten child. The reference values of zinc intake recommended by the Chinese Nutrition Society were used to evaluate the zinc intake of Guangzhou residents, showing that the residents' zinc intake is generally sufficient and not necessary to use zinc supplementation. The potential host range of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been expanding alongside its evolution during the pandemic, with rabbits and hares being considered important potential hosts, supported by a report of rabbit sero-prevalence in nature. We measured the binding affinities of rabbit and hare angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) with receptor-binding domains (RBDs) from SARS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2, and its variants and found that rabbit and hare ACE2s had broad variant tropism, with significantly enhanced affinities to Omicron BA.4/5 and its subsequent-emerged sub-variants (>10 fold). The structures of rabbit ACE2 complexed with either SARS-CoV-2 prototype (PT) or Omicron BA.4/5 spike (S) proteins were determined, thereby unveiling the importance of rabbit ACE2 Q34 in RBD-interaction and elucidating the molecular basis of the enhanced binding with Omicron BA.4/5 RBD. These results address the highly enhanced risk of rabbits infecting SARS-CoV-2 Omicron sub-variants and the importance of constant surveillance.IMPORTANCEThe severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has swept the globe and caused immense health and economic damage. SARS-CoV-2 has demonstrated a broad host range, indicating a high risk of interspecies transmission and adaptive mutation. Therefore, constant monitoring for potential hosts is of immense importance. In this study, we found that Omicron BA.4/5 and subsequent-emerged sub-variants exhibited enhanced binding to both rabbit and hare angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), and we elucidated the structural mechanism of their recognition. From the structure, we found that Q34, a unique residue of rabbit ACE2 compared to other ACE2 orthologs, plays an important role in ACE2 recognition. Patients with neurodegenerative diseases exhibit diminished basal forebrain (BF) volume compared to healthy individuals. However, it's uncertain whether this difference is consistent between sexes. It has been reported that BF volume moderately atrophies during aging, but the effect of sex on BF volume changes during the normal aging process remains unclear. In the cross-sectional study, we observed a significant reduction in BF volume in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) compared to Healthy Controls (HCs), especially in the Ch4 subregion. Notably, significant differences in BF volume between MCI and HCs were observed solely in the female group. Additionally, we identified asymmetrical atrophy in the left and right Ch4 subregions in female patients with AD. In the longitudinal analysis, we found that aging seemed to have a minimal impact on BF volume in males. Human brain structure shows heterogeneous patterns of change across adults aging and is associated with cognition. However, the relationship between cortical structural changes during aging and gene transcription signatures remains unclear. Here, using structural magnetic resonance imaging data of two separate cohorts of healthy participants from the Cambridge Centre for Aging and Neuroscience (n = 454, 18-87 years) and Dallas Lifespan Brain Study (n = 304, 20-89 years) and a transcriptome dataset, we investigated the link between cortical morphometric similarity network and brain-wide gene transcription. In two cohorts, we found reproducible morphometric similarity network change patterns of decreased morphological similarity with age in cognitive related areas (mainly located in superior frontal and temporal cortices), and increased morphological similarity in sensorimotor related areas (postcentral and lateral occipital cortices). Changes in morphometric similarity network showed significant spatial correlation with the expression of age-related genes that enriched to synaptic-related biological processes, synaptic abnormalities likely accounting for cognitive decline. Transcription changes in astrocytes, microglia, and neuronal cells interpreted most of the age-related morphometric similarity network changes, which suggest potential intervention and therapeutic targets for cognitive decline. Taken together, by linking gene transcription signatures to cortical morphometric similarity network, our findings might provide molecular and cellular substrates for cortical structural changes related to cognitive decline across adults aging., (© The Author(s) 2023. Brain function changes affect cognitive functions in older adults, yet the relationship between cognition and the dynamic changes of brain networks during naturalistic stimulation is not clear. Here, we recruited the young, middle-aged and older groups from the Cambridge Center for Aging and Neuroscience to investigate the relationship between dynamic metrics of brain networks and cognition using functional magnetic resonance imaging data during movie-watching. We found six reliable co-activation pattern (CAP) states of brain networks grouped into three pairs with opposite activation patterns in three age groups. Compared with young and middle-aged adults, older adults dwelled shorter time in CAP state 4 with deactivated default mode network (DMN) and activated salience, frontoparietal and dorsal-attention networks (DAN), and longer time in state 6 with deactivated DMN and activated DAN and visual network, suggesting altered dynamic interaction between DMN and other brain networks might contribute to cognitive decline in older adults. Meanwhile, older adults showed easier transfer from state 6 to state 3 (activated DMN and deactivated sensorimotor network), suggesting that the fragile antagonism between DMN and other cognitive networks might contribute to cognitive decline in older adults. The objective of this study was to evaluate the worldwide burden of leukemia owing to occupational exposure to formaldehyde (OEF) from 1990 to 2019. Data on leukemia due to OEF were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2019. By region, age, sex, and disease subtype, the numbers and age-standardized rates (ASRs) associated with deaths, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) were analyzed. Annual average percentage change (AAPC) was used to estimate disease burden trends from 1990 to 2019. To measure the risk of leukemia due to OEF, the population attributable fraction (PAF) was introduced. From 1990 to 2019, the number of deaths, DALYs, YLLs, and YLDs for leukemia caused by OEF increased by 44%, 34%, 33%, and 124%, respectively. Regarding the change in ASRs, the age-standardized YLDs (ASYLDs) rate of leukemia due to OEF, which was 38.03% (AAPC = 1.17 [95% confidence interval [CI] 1.11, 1.23]), indicated an increased trend. But the age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR), age-standardized DALY (ASDALY) rate, and age-standardized YLL (ASYLL) rate showed decline trends, with - 11.90% (AAPC =  - 0.41 [95% CI - 0.45, - 0.37]), - 14.19% (AAPC =  - 0.5 [95% CI - 0.55, - 0.45]), and - 14.97% (AAPC =  - 0.53 [95% CI - 0.58, - 0.48]), respectively. In terms of PAFs, there were increasing trends in PAFs of age-standardized deaths, ASDALYs, ASYLLs, and ASYLDs for leukemia caused by OEF, with 20.15% (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 11.76%, 30.25%), 36.28% (95% UI 21.46%, 53.42%), 51.91% (95% UI 35.05%, 72.07%), and 36.34% (95% UI 21.58%, 53.63%), respectively. Across the socio-demographic index (SDI) regions, the leukemia burden caused by OEF was concentrated in middle and high-middle SDI regions. Besides, OEF poses a more serious risk for acute leukemia among the leukemia subtype. Globally, leukemia caused by OEF remains a public health burden. Background: White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are widely-seen in the aging population, which are associated with cerebrovascular risk factors and age-related cognitive decline. At present, structural atrophy and functional alterations coexisted with WMHs lacks comprehensive investigation. This study developed a WMHs risk prediction model to evaluate WHMs according to Fazekas scales, and to locate potential regions with high risks across the entire brain., Methods: We developed a WMHs risk prediction model, which consisted of the following steps: T2 fluid attenuated inversion recovery (T2-FLAIR) image of each participant was firstly segmented into 1000 tiles with the size of 32 × 32 × 1, features from the tiles were extracted using the ResNet18-based feature extractor, and then a 1D convolutional neural network (CNN) was used to score all tiles based on the extracted features. Finally, a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) was constructed to predict the Fazekas scales based on the tile scores. The proposed model was trained using T2-FLAIR images, we selected tiles with abnormal scores in the test set after prediction, and evaluated their corresponding gray matter (GM) volume, white matter (WM) volume, fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), and cerebral blood flow (CBF) via longitudinal and multi-sequence Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data analysis., Results: The proposed WMHs risk prediction model could accurately predict the Fazekas ratings based on the tile scores from T2-FLAIR MRI images with accuracy of 0.656, 0.621 in training data set and test set, respectively. The longitudinal MRI validation revealed that most of the high-risk tiles predicted by the WMHs risk prediction model in the baseline images had WMHs in the corresponding positions in the longitudinal images. The validation on multi-sequence MRI demonstrated that WMHs were associated with GM and WM atrophies, WM micro-structural and perfusion alterations in high-risk tiles, and multi-modal MRI measures of most high-risk tiles showed significant associations with Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) score., Conclusion: Our proposed WMHs risk prediction model can not only accurately evaluate WMH severities according to Fazekas scales, but can also uncover potential markers of WMHs across modalities. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease commonly found in middle-aged and older people. Chondrocytes are the only cells in joint cartilage that are difficult to heal after pyroptosis, and they will aggravate the wear and tear of joint cartilage and affect the progression of OA. Pyroptosis is a novel form of programmed cell death, and the classical pyroptosis pathway is a programmed cell death pattern mediated by inflammatory cysteine protease-1. Activation of NLRP3 leads to activation and cleavage of caspase-1 precursors, which in turn leads to activation and cleavage of GSDMD proteins and the release of proinflammatory factors. Resolvin D1 (RvD1) is a specialized pro-resolving mediator (SPM) derived from omega-3 unsaturated fatty acids that reduces inflammation and catabolic responses in OA chondrocytes. However, it is unclear whether RvD1 promotes OA chondrocyte proliferation and thus joint cartilage repair. Objectives: The abrupt change of climate has led to an increasing trend of hospitalised patients in recent years. This study aimed to analyse the temperature variability (TV) associated with respiratory disease (RD) hospitalisations, hospital stays and hospital expenses., Study Design: The generalized linear model combined with distributed lag non-linear model was used to investigate the association between TV and RD hospitalisations., Methods: TV was determined by measuring the standard deviation of maximum and minimum temperatures for the current day and the previous 7 days. RD hospitalisations data were obtained from three major tertiary hospitals in Huaibei City, namely, the Huaibei People's Hospital, the Huaibei Hospital Of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Huaibei Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital. First, using a time series decomposition model, the seasonality and long-term trend of hospitalisations, hospital stays and hospital expenses for RD were explored in this warm temperate sub-humid monsoon climate. Second, robust models were used to analyse the association between TV and RD hospitalisations, hospital stays and hospital expenses. In addition, this study stratified results by sex, age and season. Third, using the attributable fraction (AF) and attributable number (AN), hospitalisations, hospital stays and hospital expenses for RD attributed to TV were quantified., Results: Overall, 0.013% of hospitalisations were attributed to TV 0-1 (i.e. TV at the current day and previous 1 day), corresponding to 220 cases, 1603 days of hospital stays and 1,308,000 RMB of hospital expenses. Females were more susceptible to TV than males, and the risk increased with longer exposure (the highest risk was seen at TV 0-7 [i.e. TV at the current day and previous 7 days] exposure). Higher AF and AN were observed at ages 0-5 years and ≥65 years. In addition, it was also found that TV was more strongly linked to RD in the cool season. The hot season was positively associated with hospital stays and hospital expenses at TV 0-3 to TV 0-7 exposure., Conclusions: Exposure to TV increased the risk of hospitalisations, longer hospital stays and higher hospital expenses for RD. High sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) are a controllable risk factor for chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs), but their effect on the global disease burden is uncertain. The study aims to assess the global burden of high SSBs from 1990 to 2019. Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 provides data on deaths, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), years of life with disabilities (YLDs) and years of life lost (YLLs) ascribe to high SSBs by ages, genders, regions and countries. For the past 30 years, overall exposure to high SSBs decreased for males and increased for females. The number of deaths from chronic NCDs ascribed to high SSBs increased from 149,988 (110,278-182,947) to 242,218 (172,045-302,250), DALYs increased from 3,698,578 (2,693,476-4,559,740) to 6,307,562 (4,300,765-8,079,556), especially the males. Age-standardized YLDs rate (ASYLDs) increased from 11.58 to 17.03. The number of ischemic heart disease (IHD) and diabetes mellitus (DM) deaths and DALYs ascribed to high SSBs has been increasing. Age-standardized death rate (ASDR) for DM risen from 0.56 to 0.62, age-standardized DALYs rate (ASDALYs) risen from 21.41 to 28.21. The burden of disease ascribed to high SSBs was in the elderly significantly higher than in the young and middle-aged, mainly concentrated in Central Asia and Oceania. The disease burden was highest in regions with moderate sociodemographic index (SDI). Background: The global burden of digestive diseases has been rising in the last 30 years. The rates and trends of incidence, deaths, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) for digestive diseases need to be investigated., Methods: We extracted the data on overall digestive diseases and by cause between 1990-2019 from the Global Burden of Diseases 2019 website, including the absolute number and the corresponding age-standardized rates of incidence (ASIR), deaths (ASDR), and DALYs (ASDALYs)., Results: Globally, the incident cases, deaths, and DALYs of digestive diseases in 2019 increased by 74.44, 37.85, and 23.46%, respectively, compared with that in 1990, with an increasing ASIR of 0.09%, as well as decreasing ASDR and ASDALYs of 1.38 and 1.32% annually. The sociodemographic index (SDI) of overall digestive diseases showed a slight increase in ASIR from low to middle-low regions. The downtrend in ASDR and ASDALYs was found in all SDI regions. The burden of incidence was higher in females, while the burden of deaths and DALYs was higher in males for the overall digestive diseases and most causes. The estimated annual percentage changes were significantly associated with the baseline ASIR, ASDR, and ASDALYs for the overall digestive diseases, and the negative correlations between ASDR, ASDALYs, and human development index both in 1990 ( R  = -0.68, R  = -0.69) and 2019 ( R  = -0.71, R  = -0.73) were noticed., Conclusion: The findings indicate that digestive diseases remain a significant public health burden, with substantial variation across countries, sexes, and age groups. The density and spatial distribution of substituted dopants affect the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) materials properties. Previous studies have demonstrated that the density of dopants in TMDCs increases with the amount of doping, and the phenomenon of doping concentration difference between the nucleation center and the edge is observed, but the spatial distribution law of doping atoms has not been carefully studied. Here, it is demonstrated that the spatial distribution of dopants changes at high doping concentrations. The spontaneous formation of an interface with a steep doping concentration change is named concentration phase separation (CPS). The difference in the spatial distribution of dopants on both sides of the interface can be identified by an optical microscope. This is consistent with the results of spectral analysis and microstructure characterization of scanning transmission electron microscope. According to the calculation results of density functional theory, the chemical potential has two relatively stable energies as the doping concentration increases, which leads to the spontaneous formation of CPS. Understanding the abnormal phenomena is important for the design of TMDCs devices. Due to the combined effect of sluices and sea tide, the sluice-controlled coastal plain river would be characterized by both trophic state and salinity gradients, affecting the spatiotemporal optical properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM). In this study, we investigated the spatiotemporal variation of water quality parameters and optical properties of DOM in the Haihe River, a representative sluice-controlled coastal plain river in Tianjin, China. A significant salinity gradient and four trophic states were observed in the water body of the Haihe River. Two humic- and one protein-like substances were identified from the DOM by the three-dimensional fluorescence spectra combined with the parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis. Pearson's correlation analysis and redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that the salinity significantly affected the abundance of chromophoric DOM (CDOM) but did not cause significant changes in the fluorescence optical characteristics. In addition, the effect of Trophic state index (TSI) on the CDOM abundance was greater than that on the fluorescence intensity of fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM). In the water body with both salinity and trophic state gradients, TSI posed a greater influence than salinity on the CDOM abundance. Our results fill the research gap in spatiotemporal DOM characteristics and water quality variation in water bodies with both salinity and trophic state gradients. Objectives: The global burden of heart disease is severe and increasing in the coming years. This study aims to analyze the global burden of heart disease., Study Design: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD), ischemic heart disease (IHD), hypertensive heart disease (HHD), and non-rheumatic valvular heart disease (NRVHD) were selected and analyzed from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019., Methods: The prevalence, deaths, disability-adjusted life years and their corresponding age-standardized rates were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. In addition, estimated annual percentage change was calculated to better assess epidemiological trends. In addition, we performed an age-period-cohort analysis using the Nordpred package in R program to predict death trends over the next 20 years., Results: Globally, the prevalence of four heart diseases (RHD, IHD, HHD, and NRVHD) increased by 70.5%, 103.5%, 137.9%, and 110.0% compared with 1990, respectively. The deaths cases of RHD decreased by 15.6%, whereas IHD, HHD, and NRVHD increased by 60.4%, 76.6%, and 110.6%. Compared with absolute values, their corresponding age-standardized rates only showed a slight increase trend or even decreased in some areas with high sociodemographic index. In the next 20 years, the absolute values of deaths will continue to increase, whereas their age-standardized rates of deaths will flatten out., Conclusions: Globally, the absolute values of heart disease have increased over the past 30 years and will continue to increase over the next 20 years. The excessive accumulation of potentially toxic metals (Pb and Cd) in coastal wetlands is among the main factors threatening wetland ecosystems. However, the effects of water table depth (WTD) on the risk and binding mechanisms of potentially toxic metals in sediments remain unclear. Here, sediments from different WTD obtained from a typical coastal wetland were evaluated using a newly developed strategy based on chemical extraction methods coupled with high-resolution spectroscopy. Our findings indicated that the WTD of the coastal wetland fluctuates frequently and the average enrichment factor for Pb was categorized as minor, whereas Cd enrichment was categorized as moderate. High-resolution spectroscopy techniques also demonstrated that organic functional groups and partly inorganic compounds (e.g., Fe-O/Si-O) played a vital role in the binding of Pb and Cd to surface sediments. Additionally, mineral components rather than organic groups were mainly bound to these metals in the bottom sediments. Sex differences in episodic memory (EM), remembering past events based on when and where they occurred, have been reported, but the neural mechanisms are unclear. T1-weighted images of 111 females and 61 males were acquired from the Dallas Lifespan Brain Study. Using surface-based morphometry and structural covariance (SC) analysis, we constructed structural covariance networks (SCN) based on cortical volume, and the global efficiency (Eglob) was computed to characterize network integration. The relationship between SCN and EM was examined by SC analysis among the top-n brain regions that were most relevant to EM performance. The number of SC connections (females: 3306; males: 437, P = 0.0212) and Eglob (females: 0.1845; males: 0.0417, P = 0.0408) of SCN in females were higher than those in males. The top-n brain regions with the strongest SC in females were located in auditory network, cingulo-opercular network (CON), and default mode network (DMN), and in males, they were located in frontoparietal network, CON, and DMN. These results confirmed that the Eglob of SCN in females was higher than males, sex differences in EM performance might be related to the differences in network-level integration. Bipolar disorder (BD) is a heritable psychiatric disorder with a complex etiology that is often associated with cortical alterations. Morphometric studies in adults with BD are well established; however, few have examined cortical changes in pediatric BD (PBD). Additionally, the correlation between cortical thickness (CT) changes in PBD and gene expression remains elusive. Here, we performed an integrative analysis using neuroimaging data from 58 PBD individuals and the Allen human brain transcriptomic dataset. We applied partial least squares (PLS) regression analysis on structural MRI data and cortical gene expression, enrichment and specific cell type analysis to investigate the genetic correlates of CT alterations in PBD. We found the expression levels of PBD-related genes showed significant spatial correlations with CT differences. Further enrichment and specific cell type analysis revealed that transcriptome signatures associated with cortical thinning were enriched in synaptic signaling, ion channels, astrocytes, and excitatory neurons. Neurodevelopmental patterns of these genes showed significantly increased expression in the cerebellum, cortex, and subcortical regions during the adolescence period. These results highlight neurodevelopmental transcriptional changes could account for most of the observed correlations with CT differences in PBD, which offers a novel perspective to understand biological conceptualization mechanisms for the genetic correlates of CT alterations., (© The Author(s) 2023. All-inorganic cesium lead triiodide (CsPbI 3 ) perovskite has received increasing attention due to its intrinsic thermal stability and suitable band gap for photovoltaic applications. However, it is difficult to deposit high-quality pure-phase CsPbI 3 films using CsI and PbI 2 as precursors due to the rapid nucleation and crystal growth by the solution coating method. Here, a simple cation-exchange approach is employed to fabricate all-inorganic 3D CsPbI 3 perovskite, where 1D ethylammonium lead (EAPbI 3 ) perovskite is first solution-deposited and then transformed to 3D CsPbI 3 via ion exchange between EA + and Cs + during thermal annealing. The large space between the PbI 3 - skeletons in 1D EAPbI 3 favors the cation interdiffusion and exchange for the formation of pure-phase 3D CsPbI 3 with full compactness and high crystallinity and orientation. The resulting CsPbI 3 film exhibits a low trap density of state and high charge mobility, and the perovskite solar cell shows a power-conversion efficiency of 18.2% with enhanced stability. This strategy provides an alternative and promising fabrication route for the fabrication of high-quality all-inorganic perovskite devices.

Our study aimed to quantify the exposure-lag-response effects of the diurnal temperature range (DTR) on other infectious diarrhea (OID) in Tongcheng city and examine the vulnerable populations. Distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) and generalized additive model (GAM) were applied jointly to quantify the association between DTR and the daily number of OID cases compared with the median DTR. Stratified analysis was performed by gender, age, and seasons of onset. There are a total of 8231 cases during this decade. We observed a j-shaped relationship between DTR and OID, with a peak point at the maximum DTR (RR: 2.651, 95% CI: 1.320-5.323) compared to the median DTR. As DTR increased from 8.2 to 10.9 °C, we found the RRs started to decrease and then rise from day 0, and the minimum value occurred on day 7 (RR:1.003, 95% CI: 0.996-1.010). From stratified analysis, we observed that females and adults are more likely to be affected by high DTR significantly. In addition, the influence of DTR was different in cold and warm seasons. High DTR in warm seasons affects the number of OID daily cases, but no statistical significance was identified in cold seasons. Background: Smoke-free policies have led to a decline in smoking prevalence. Nevertheless, as the global population grows, more non-smokers are exposed to second-hand smoke (SHS) hazards. Mitigating SHS hazards requires a systematic analysis of the global disease burden attributable to SHS., Methods: Data on SHS was extracted from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. First, we measured the disease burden of SHS by the number of cases and age-standardized rates of deaths, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and years of life lost (YLLs) from 1990 to 2019. Second, trends in the disease burden of SHS in different periods were estimated based on the annual percentage change (APC) by joinpoint regression analysis. Finally, using histogram plots, world maps, Pearson correlation analysis, and population attributable fraction (PAF), we conducted a stratified analysis of SHS exposure by sex, age, geographic location, sociodemographic index (SDI) level, and disease., Results: The number of deaths caused by SHS remained stable between 1990 and 2019, and the number of YLDs more than doubled in three decades. In contrast, the number of DALYs and YLLs caused by SHS decreased. The declining trend in deaths (APC = -1.42 % [95 % UI -1.79 %, -1.05 %]), DALYs (APC = -1.91 % [95 % UI -2.15 %, -1.67 %]), and YLLs (APC = -1.28 % [95 % UI -1.93 %, -0.64 %]) had slowed down in recent years, while SHS-related YLDs were still increasing (APC = 1.84 % [95 % UI 0.74 %, 2.96 %]). From 2010 to 2019, we found that SHS exposure increased the risk of tracheal, bronchus, and lung cancer (PAF increased by 11.75 %), breast cancer (PAF increased by 5.36 %), diabetes mellitus (PAF increased by 8.24 %), and ischemic heart disease (PAF increased by 4.46 %). Geopolymer is widely used as a supplement to cementitious composites because of its advantages of low carbon and environmental protection, and geopolymer concrete is also broadly used in practical engineering. In recent years, geopolymer concrete has attracted increasing interest owing to its superior mechanical properties, and a series of research results have been obtained. In this paper, from the preparation of geopolymer concrete, based on the characteristics that geopolymer concrete is brittle and easy to crack, the types and basic properties of fibers to enhance the toughness of concrete are analyzed, the advantages and disadvantages of different fibers used as a material to enhance the toughness of concrete are summarized, and we review the effects of type, shape, volume rate, aspect ratio, and hybrid fiber combinations on the static mechanical properties. The results indicate that fibers have significant potential to enhance the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, and fracture toughness of geopolymer concrete, and the optimal fiber volume rate seems to be related to the fiber type. Whereas the effect of aspect ratio and hybrid fiber combinations on the properties of geopolymer concrete seems to be obvious. This paper reviews the influence of fiber on the basic mechanical properties of geopolymer concrete, which provides a solid foundation to promote the further development and application of the research on the toughness of fiber-reinforced geopolymer concrete and provides recommendations for future research.

Aim: Our study aimed to survey the burden of disease attributed to metabolic risks (MRs) and secondary MR from 1990 to 2019., Methods: Using methodological framework of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019, we reported the global number, age-standardized rate and population attributable fraction of deaths and disability adjusted life years related to MRs and secondary MR. Furthermore, we analyzed the global burden caused by MRs and secondary MR in detail by gender, age, region, country, disease and Socio-demographic Index level., Results: The number (million) of deaths and DALYs caused by MRs was 18.6 and 462.8 in 2019, with an increase of 43.6 % and 75.0 % since 1990. However, the ASR of deaths and DALYs attributed to MRs had a decrease of 23.3 % and 17.0 % since 1990. The burden caused by MRs and secondary MR raised with age, and the burden was the heaviest in low - and middle-income countries, especially in Middle East & North Africa. For diseases, the heaviest burden attributed to MRs was observed in ischemic heart disease, followed by stroke., Conclusion: The burden of disease attributed to MRs has continued to rise in the past 30 years, particularly for men and low-middle SDI regions. Objective: The primary objective of this study was to determine the genetic parameters for reproductive traits among Large White pigs, including the following traits: total number born (TNB), number born alive (NBA), litter birth weight (LBW), average birth weight (ABW), gestation length (GL), age at first service (AFS) and age at first farrowing (AFF)., Methods: The dataset consisted of 19,036 reproductive records from 4,986 sows, and a multi-trait animal model was used to estimate genetic variance components of seven reproductive traits., Results: The heritability estimates for these reproductive traits ranged from 0.09 to 0.26, with the highest heritability for GL and AFF, and the lowest heritability for NBA. The repeatabilities for TNB, NBA, LWB, ABW, and GL were ranged from 0.16 to 0.34. Genetic and phenotypic correlations ranged from -0.41 to 0.99, and -0.34 to 0.98, respectively. In particular, the correlations between TNB, NBA and LBW, between AFS and AFF, exhibited a strong positive correlation. Furthermore, for TNB, NBA, LBW, ABW, and GL, genetic correlations of the same trait between different parities were moderately to strongly correlated (0.32 to 0.97), and the correlations of adjacent parities were higher than those of nonadjacent parities., Conclusion: All the results in the present study can be used as a basis for the genetic assessment of the target population. In the formulation of dam line selection index, AFS or AFF can be considered to combine with TNB in a multiple trait swine breeding value estimation system. Moreover, breeders are encouraged to increase the proportion of sows at parity 3-5 and reinforce the management of sows at parity 1 and parity ≥8.

A mechanistic understanding of interactions between atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and their growth substrates is important for achieving the unidirectional alignment of nuclei and seamless stitching of 2D TMD domains and thus 2D wafers. In this work, we conduct a cross-sectional scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) study to investigate the atomic-scale nucleation and early stage growth behaviors of chemical vapor deposited monolayer (ML-) MoS 2 and molecular beam epitaxy ML-MoSe 2 on a Au(111) substrate. Statistical analysis reveals the majority of as-grown domains, i.e., ∼88% for MoS 2 and 90% for MoSe 2 , nucleate on surface terraces, with the rest (i.e., ∼12% for MoS 2 and 10% for MoSe 2 ) on surface steps. Moreover, within the latter case, step-associated nucleation, ∼64% of them are terminated with a Mo-zigzag edge in connection with the Au surface steps, with the rest (∼36%) being S-zigzag edges. In conjunction with ab initio density functional theory calculations, the results confirm that van der Waals epitaxy, rather than the surface step guided epitaxy, plays deterministic roles for the realization of unidirectional ML-MoS 2 (MoSe 2 ) domains on a Au(111) substrate. In contrast, surface steps, particularly their step height, are mainly responsible for the integrity and thickness of MoS 2 /MoSe 2 films. In detail, it is found that the lateral growth of monolayer thick MoS 2 /MoSe 2 domains only proceeds across mono-Au-atom high surface steps (∼2.4 Å), but fail for higher ones (bi-Au atom step and higher) during the growth. Our cross-sectional STEM study also confirms the existence of considerable compressive residual strain that reaches ∼3.0% for ML-MoS 2 /MoSe 2 domains on Au(111). The present study aims to understand the growth mechanism of 2D TMD wafers.

The 'enzyme latch' theory believes that oxygen constraints on phenol oxidase can restrain the activity of hydrolytic enzymes responsible for decomposition, while the 'iron (Fe) gate' theory suggests that Fe oxidation can decrease phenol oxidase activity and enhance Fe-lignin complexation under oxygen exposure. The objective of this study was to explore the roles of the 'enzyme latch' and 'Fe gate' mechanisms in regulating soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration in a rice-wheat cropping system subjected to six fertilization treatments: control (CT), chemical fertilizer (CF), CF plus manure (CFM), CF plus straw (CFS), CF plus manure and straw (CFMS), and CF plus organic-inorganic compound fertilizer (OICF). Soil samples were collected after the rice and wheat harvests and wet sieved into large macroaggregates, small macroaggregates, microaggregates, and silt and clay particles. Variations in amorphous and free Fe oxides, Fe-bound organic carbon and phenol oxidase activity were examined. After nine years, compared with the initial soil, the activation degree of free Fe oxides increased by 1.3- to 1.6-fold and the topsoil SOC stock increased by 13-61% across all treatments. Amorphous Fe oxide content, phenol oxidase activity and aggregate mean-weight diameter were higher after the wheat harvest than after the rice harvest. Amorphous Fe oxide content was positively correlated with Fe-bound organic carbon content (P < 0.001) but negatively correlated with phenol oxidase activity (P < 0.001). Therefore, seasonal alternation of wetting and drying can progressively drive the rejuvenation of Fe oxides and simultaneously affect the activity of phenol oxidase. Oxidative precipitation of amorphous Fe oxides promoted the formation of organo-Fe complexes and macroaggregates, while flooding of the paddies decreased the activity of phenol oxidase, thereby resulting in year-round hindered decomposition. In grapevines, the MYB transcription factors play an important regulatory role in the phenylpropanoid pathway including proanthocyanidin, anthocyanin, and flavonoid biosynthesis. However, the role of MYB in abiotic stresses is not clear. In this study, an R2R3-MYB transcription factor, VyMYB24 , was isolated from a high drought-tolerant Chinese wild Vitis species V. yanshanesis . Our findings demonstrated that it was involved in plant development and drought tolerance. VyMYB24 is a nuclear protein and is significantly induced by drought stress. When over-expressed in tobacco, VyMYB24 caused plant dwarfing including plant height, leaf area, flower size, and seed weight. The GA1+3 content in transgenic plants was reduced significantly, and spraying exogenous gibberellin could recover the dwarf phenotype of VyMYB24 transgenic plants, suggesting that VyMYB24 might inhibit plant development by the regulation of gibberellin (GA) metabolism. Under drought stress, the VyMYB24 transgenic plants improved their tolerance to drought with a lower wilting rate, lower relative electrical conductivity, and stronger roots. Compared to wild-type tobacco plants, VyMYB24 transgenic plants accumulated less reactive oxygen, accompanied by increased antioxidant enzyme activity and upregulated gene expression levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) genes. In addition, transgenic plants accumulated more proline, and their related synthetic genes NtP5CR and NtP5CS genes were significantly upregulated when exposed to drought. Besides, abiotic stress-responsive genes, NtDREB, NtERD10C, NtERD10D , and NtLEA5 , were upregulated significantly in VyMYB24 transgenic plants. Inorganic cesium lead iodide perovskite CsPbI 3 is attracting great attention as a light absorber for single or multi-junction photovoltaics due to its outstanding thermal stability and proper band gap. However, the device performance of CsPbI 3 -based perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is limited by the unsatisfactory crystal quality and thus severe non-radiative recombination. Here, vacuum-assisted thermal annealing (VATA) is demonstrated as an effective approach for controlling the morphology and crystallinity of the CsPbI 3 perovskite films formed from the precursors of PbI 2 , CsI, and dimethylammonium iodide (DMAI). By this method, a large-area and high-quality CsPbI 3 film is obtained, exhibiting a much reduced trap-state density with prolonged charge lifetime. Consequently, the solar cell efficiency is raised from 17.26 to 20.06 %, along with enhanced stability. Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of adding riboflavin to boar sperm freezing extender on the challenge of cryopreservation., Methods: Different concentrations (0, 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 μM) of riboflavin were added to the freezing extender. Spermatozoa motility, membrane integrity, acrosomal integrity, mitochondrial membrane potential and enzyme activities were analysed once 10 min after thawing. Q-PCR was used to detect the mRNA expression of Caspase3, Bcl-2 and Bax., Results: The results showed that the addition of 10 μM riboflavin to boar sperm freezing extender significantly increased the frozen-thawed sperm progressive motility compared with the control group (p < 0.05). Activities of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and catalase improved after adding riboflavin to the extender (p < 0.05). During freezing-thawing, the boar sperm mitochondrial membrane potential, acrosomal integrity, plasma membrane and DNA at 10 μM in the riboflavin group increased by 6.6%, 9.6%, 5.49% and 5.62% (p < 0.05), respectively, compared with the control group. The addition of 10 μM riboflavin to the extender significantly decreased the malondialdehyde (p < 0.05) content, whereas it increased the ATP content (p < 0.05) of boar sperm during freezing-thawing. Furthermore, the expression of Caspase-3 and Bax (p < 0.05) were significantly lower, whereas the expression of BCL-2 (p < 0.05) was greater than the control group when adding 10 μM riboflavin to the extender., Conclusions: Riboflavin showed cryoprotective capacity to the freezing extender used for boar sperm during the process of freezing-thawing, and the optimal concentration of riboflavin for the frozen extender was 10 μM., (© 2022 The Authors. The objectives of this study were to investigate the relationship between the in vitro ruminal ammonia nitrogen (NH 3 -N) concentration and the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System (CNCPS) N-fractions of feeds for cattle and further compare the performance of developing multiple linear regression (MLR) and artificial neural network (ANN) models in estimating the NH 3 -N concentration in rumen fermentation. Two data sets were established, of which the training data set containing forty-five rations for cattle with concentrate/roughage ratios of 50:50, 40:60, 30:70, 20:80 and 10:90 used for developing models and the test data set containing ten other rations with the same concentrate/roughage ratios with the training data set were used for validating of models. The NH 3 -N concentrations of feed samples were measured using an in vitro incubation technique. The CNCPS N-fractions (g), for example PB 1 (rapidly degraded true protein), PB 2 (neutral detergent soluble nitrogen), PB 3 (acid detergent soluble nitrogen) of rations, were calculated based on chemical analysis. Statistical analysis indicated that the NH 3 -N concentration (mg) was significantly correlated with the CNCPS N-fractions (g) PB 1 , PB 2 and PB 3 in a multiple linear pattern: NH 3 -N = (130.70±33.80) PB 1  + (155.83±17.89) PB 2 - (85.44±37.69) PB 3  + (42.43±1.05), R 2  = 0.77, p < 0.0001, n = 45. The results indicated that both MLR and ANN models were suitable for predicting in vitro NH 3 -N concentration of rations using CNCPS N-fractions PB 1 , PB 2 , and PB 3 as independent variables while the neural network model showed better performance in terms of greater r 2 , CCC and lower RMSPE between the observed and predicted values., (© 2021 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

The Licha black pig, a popular indigenous Chinese pig breed, is known for its multi-vertebral trait and higher lean meat rate. Understanding the current conservation status, family structure, and degree of inbreeding of the Licha black pig population will be useful to maintain a sufficient level of genetic diversity in these animal resources. In the present study, the genetic diversity, population structure, and inbreeding coefficient of this conserved population were analyzed using SNP genotyping data from 209 Licha black pigs. Based on the genomic information, this population was divided into eight different families with boars. The effective population size (N e ), polymorphic marker ratio (P N ), expected heterozygosity (H e ), and observed heterozygosity (H o ) of this population were 8.7, 0.827, 0.3576, and 0.3512, respectively. In addition, a total of 5976 runs of homozygosity (ROHs) were identified, and most of the ROHs (54.9%) were greater than 5 Mb. The genomic inbreeding coefficient of each individual was estimated based on ROHs ( F ROH ) with an average inbreeding coefficient of 0.11 for the population. Five statistics (N e , P N , H o , H e , and F ROH ) showed a decrease in the level of genetic diversity and a high degree of inbreeding in this population. Thus, special preservation programs need to be implemented in the future, such as introducing new individuals or improving the mating plan. Altogether, our study provides the first genomic overview of the genetic diversity and population structure of Licha black pigs, which will be useful for the management and long-term preservation of this breed.

Changes in environmental temperature affect multiple meiotic processes in flowering plants. Polyploid plants derived from whole-genome duplication (WGD) have enhanced genetic plasticity and tolerance to environmental stress but face challenges in organizing and segregating doubled chromosome sets. In this study, we investigated the impact of increased environmental temperature on male meiosis in autotetraploid Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). Under low to mildly increased temperatures (5°C-28°C), irregular chromosome segregation universally occurred in synthetic autotetraploid Columbia-0 (Col-0). Similar meiotic lesions occurred in autotetraploid rice (Oryza sativa L.) and allotetraploid canola (Brassica napus cv Westar), but not in evolutionarily derived hexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum). At extremely high temperatures, chromosome separation and tetrad formation became severely disordered due to univalent formation caused by the suppression of crossing-over. We found a strong correlation between tetravalent formation and successful chromosome pairing, both of which were negatively correlated with temperature elevation, suggesting that increased temperature interferes with crossing-over predominantly by impacting homolog pairing. We also showed that loading irregularities of axis proteins ASY1 and ASY4 co-localize on the chromosomes of the syn1 mutant and the heat-stressed diploid and autotetraploid Col-0, revealing that heat stress affects the lateral region of synaptonemal complex (SC) by impacting the stability of the chromosome axis. Moreover, we showed that chromosome axis and SC in autotetraploid Col-0 are more sensitive to increased temperature than those in diploid Arabidopsis. Methane (CH 4 ) from enteric fermentation accounts for 3 to 5% of global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to climate change. Cost-effective strategies are needed to reduce feed energy losses as enteric CH 4 while improving ruminant production efficiency. Mitigation strategies need to be environmentally friendly, easily adopted by producers and accepted by consumers. However, few sustainable CH 4 mitigation approaches are available. Recent studies show that the chemically synthesized CH 4 inhibitor 3-nitrooxypropanol is one of the most effective approaches for enteric CH 4 abatement. 3-nitrooxypropanol specifically targets the methyl-coenzyme M reductase and inhibits the final catalytic step in methanogenesis in rumen archaea. Providing 3-nitrooxypropanol to dairy and beef cattle in research studies has consistently decreased enteric CH 4 production by 30% on average, with reductions as high as 82% in some cases. Efficacy is positively related to 3-NOP dose and negatively affected by neutral detergent fiber concentration of the diet, with greater responses in dairy compared with beef cattle when compared at the same dose. This review collates the current literature on 3-nitrooxypropanol and examines the overall findings of meta-analyses and individual studies to provide a synthesis of science-based information on the use of 3-nitrooxypropanol for CH 4 abatement. The intent is to help guide commercial adoption at the farm level in the future. There is a significant body of peer-reviewed scientific literature to indicate that 3-nitrooxypropanol is effective and safe when incorporated into total mixed rations, but further research is required to fully understand the long-term effects and the interactions with other CH 4 mitigating compounds.

Biosynthesis/metabolism, perception/signaling, and transport are three essential aspects of the actions of phytohormones. Jasmonates (JAs), including jasmonic acid (JA) and related oxylipins, are implicated in the regulation of a range of ecological interactions, as well as developmental programs to integrate these interactions. Jasmonoyl-isoleucine (JA-Ile) is the most bioactive JAs, and perception of JA-Ile by its coreceptor, the Skp1-Cullin1-F-box-type (SCF) protein ubiquitin ligase complex SCF COI1 -JAZ, in the nucleus derepresses the transcriptional repression of target genes. The biosynthesis and metabolism of JAs occur in the plastid, peroxisome, cytosol, endoplasmic reticulum, and vacuole, whereas sensing of JA-Ile levels occurs in the nucleus. It is increasingly apparent that a number of transporters, particularly members of the jasmonates transporter (JAT) family, located at endomembranes as well as the plasma membrane, constitute a network for modulating and coordinating the metabolic flux and signaling of JAs. In this review, we discuss recent advances in the metabolism, signaling, and especially the transport of JAs, focusing on intracellular compartmentation of these processes. Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) with high crystalline quality are important channel materials for next-generation electronics. Researches on TMDCs have been accelerated by the development of chemical vapor deposition (CVD). However, antiparallel domains and twin grain boundaries (GBs) usually form in CVD synthesis due to the special threefold symmetry of TMDCs lattices. The existence of GBs severely reduces the electrical and photoelectrical properties of TMDCs, thus restricting their practical applications. Herein, the epitaxial growth of single crystal MoS 2 (SC-MoS 2 ) monolayer is reported on Au (111) film across a two-inch c-plane sapphire wafer by CVD. The MoS 2 domains obtained on Au (111) film exhibit unidirectional alignment with zigzag edges parallel to the <110> direction of Au (111). Experimental results indicated that the unidirectional growth of MoS 2 domains on Au (111) is a temperature-guided epitaxial growth mode. The high growth temperature provides enough energy for the rotation of the MoS 2 seeds to find the most favorable orientation on Au (111) to achieve a unidirectional ratio of over 99%. Moreover, the unidirectional MoS 2 domains seamlessly stitched into single crystal monolayer without GBs formation. Although the contribution of calcium ion (Ca 2+ ) to stabilizing organic carbon (OC) in soils has been known for years, we still have a limited understanding of the quantity and molecular composition of Ca 2+ bound SOC (Ca-OC) evolution in response to long-term fertilization. Here we report the role of Ca 2+ in the accumulation of OC in the topsoil (0-20 cm) from two long-term (25-37 years) fertilization experiment sites. Approximately 4.54-19.27% and 9.00-25.15% of SOC was bound with Ca 2+ in the Ferric Acrisol and Fluvic Cambisol, respectively. The application of NPK mineral fertilizers (NPK) decreased (p < 0.05) the Ca-OC stocks from 3.40 t ha -1 to 0.96 t ha -1 and from 2.03 t ha -1 to 1.17 t ha -1 in the Ferric Acrisol and Fluvic Cambisol, respectively. Swine manure (M) addition did not change (p > 0.05) the Ca-OC stock in Ferric Acrisol, but enhanced (p < 0.05) that from 2.03 t ha -1 to 9.75 t ha -1 in Fluvic Cambisol. Fourier transform infrared and carbon (1s)-near X-ray absorption spectroscopies showed that Ca 2+ was mainly bound with aromatic carbon and carboxylic carbon. Long-term M fertilization facilitated the binding of Ca 2+ with O-alkyl C, suggesting an increment of Ca-linked polysaccharide. Calcium ion was preferentially associated with 13 C enriched organic matter (OM). Mineral fertilization promoted the 13 C-enriched organic compounds in the Ca-OC, while organic fertilization facilitated the binding of 13 C-depleted organic C with Ca 2+ . Mobile wound signals transmitted from local damaged to distal undamaged sites induce upsurge of jasmonic acid (JA) and activation of core JA signaling, priming the whole plant for broad-spectrum resistance/immunity against future challenges. We recently characterized two jasmonate importers AtJAT3 and AtJAT4 in Arabidopsis thaliana jasmonate transporter (JAT) family that cooperatively regulate the transmission of JA from leaf-to-leaf in this wound-induced systemic response/resistance (WSR). As half-molecule ATP-binding cassette transporters, AtJAT3 and AtJAT4 need to form homodimers or/and heterodimer to function. Here we show interactions in AtJAT3-AtJAT3, AtJAT3-AtJAT4, and AtJAT4-AtJAT4 pairs by both yeast two-hybrid and bimolecular fluorescent complementation assays. Furthermore, we propose a model in which the homo-/hetero-dimers of AtJAT3/AtJAT4 mediated cell-cell transport of JA drives long-distance transmission of JA signal in a self-propagation mode and give perspectives on future works to reinforce this model.

Rhizosphere, formed via the input of root exudates, is one of the most dynamic biological interfaces on earth. Investigation of carbon dynamics in rhizosphere is thus crucial for the understanding of soil biogeochemical processes. Herein, synchrotron radiation-based Fourier transform infrared (SR-FTIR) combined with two dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) was used to probe and identify the changes of chemical constituents and functional groups of organic carbon on the root/soil interface in rhizosphere of two plants [Leptochloa chinensis (L.) Nees and Cyperus rotundus L.]. The SR-FTIR results showed obviously heterogeneous distributions of functional groups in rhizosphere at microscale. Specifically, regardless of plant species, about 20-30 μm regions in rhizosphere can be affected by root activities. The peak area ratios of organic-OH and aliphatic-C to clay-OH on the root/soil interface in rhizosphere were 4.04-8.48 times higher than that in bulk soil, providing direct evidence of the organic carbon storage due to root activities. 2D-COS analysis suggested that the root activities induced the first adsorption or sequestration of newly organics (3350 cm -1 ) on the root/soil interface, followed by the destruction of clay-OH (3621 or 860 cm -1 ), leading to the release of mineral associated organics and nutrients (e.g., 1510 and 1150 cm -1 ) from the soil. These results can enlarge our knowledge on the concentration, distribution, and dynamics of organic carbon in rhizosphere at the microscale level and also the environmental behaviors and fate of other elements and contaminants that associated with organic carbon in rhizosphere. Food scarcity, population growth, and global climate change have propelled crop yield growth driven by high-throughput phenotyping into the era of big data. However, access to large-scale phenotypic data has now become a critical barrier that phenomics urgently must overcome. Fortunately, the high-throughput plant phenotyping platform (HT3P), employing advanced sensors and data collection systems, can take full advantage of non-destructive and high-throughput methods to monitor, quantify, and evaluate specific phenotypes for large-scale agricultural experiments, and it can effectively perform phenotypic tasks that traditional phenotyping could not do. In this way, HT3Ps are novel and powerful tools, for which various commercial, customized, and even self-developed ones have been recently introduced in rising numbers. Here, we review these HT3Ps in nearly 7 years from greenhouses and growth chambers to the field, and from ground-based proximal phenotyping to aerial large-scale remote sensing. Platform configurations, novelties, operating modes, current developments, as well the strengths and weaknesses of diverse types of HT3Ps are thoroughly and clearly described. Then, miscellaneous combinations of HT3Ps for comparative validation and comprehensive analysis are systematically present, for the first time. Finally, we consider current phenotypic challenges and provide fresh perspectives on future development trends of HT3Ps. The transmission of mobile wound signals along the phloem pathway is essential to the activation of wound-induced systemic response/resistance, which requires an upsurge of jasmonic acid (JA) in the distal undamaged leaves. Among these mobile signals, the electrical signal mediated by the glutamate-dependent activation of several clade three GLUTAMATE RECEPTOR-LIKE (GLR3) proteins is involved in the stimulation of JA production in distal leaves. However, whether JA acts as a mobile wound signal and, if so, how it is transmitted and interacts with the electrical signal remain unclear. Here, we show that JA was translocated from the local to distal leaves in Arabidopsis, and this process was predominantly regulated by two phloem-expressed and plasma membrane-localized jasmonate transporters, AtJAT3 and AtJAT4. In addition to the cooperation between AtJAT3/4 and GLR3.3 in the regulation of long-distance JA translocation, our findings indicate that importer-mediated cell-cell JA transport is important for driving the loading and translocation of JA in the phloem pathway in a self-propagating manner., (Copyright © 2020 The Author. Reactive oxygen species (ROS), a type of oxygen monoelectronic reduction product, have a higher chemical activity than O 2 . Although ROS pose potential risks to all organisms via inducing oxidative stress, indispensable role of ROS in individual development cannot be ignored. Among them, the role of ROS in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana is deeply studied. Mounting evidence suggests that ROS are essential for root and root hair development. In the present review, we provide an updated perspective on the latest research progress pertaining to the role of ROS in the precise regulation of root stem cell maintenance and differentiation, redox regulation of the cell cycle, and root hair initiation during root growth. Among the different types of ROS, O 2 •- and H 2 O 2 have been extensively investigated, and they exhibit different gradient distributions in the roots. The concentration of O 2 •- decreases along a gradient from the meristem to the transition zone and the concentration of H 2 O 2 decreases along a gradient from the differentiation zone to the elongation zone. These gradients are regulated by peroxidases, which are modulated by the UPBEAT1 (UPB1) transcription factor. In addition, multiple transcriptional factors, such as APP1, ABO8, PHB3, and RITF1, which are involved in the brassinolide signaling pathway, converge as a ROS signal to regulate root stem cell maintenance. Furthermore, superoxide anions (O 2 •- ) are generated from the oxidation in mitochondria, ROS produced during plasmid metabolism, H 2 O 2 produced in apoplasts, and catalysis of respiratory burst oxidase homolog (RBOH) in the cell membrane. Furthermore, ROS can act as a signal to regulate redox status, which regulates the expression of the cell-cycle components CYC2;3, CYCB1;1, and retinoblastoma-related protein, thereby controlling the cell-cycle progression. In the root maturation zone, the epidermal cells located in the H cell position emerge to form hair cells, and plant hormones, such as auxin and ethylene regulate root hair formation via ROS. Furthermore, ROS accumulation can influence hormone signal transduction and vice versa. Data about the association between nutrient stress and ROS signals in root hair development are scarce. However, the fact that ROBHC / RHD2 or RHD6 is specifically expressed in root hair cells and induced by nutrients, may explain the relationship. Changes in climate and land use are causing grasslands to suffer increasingly from abiotic stresses, including soil salinization. Silicon (Si) amendment has been frequently proposed to improve plant resistance to multiple biotic and abiotic stresses and increase ecosystem productivity while controlling the biogeochemical carbon (C) cycle. However, the effects of Si on plant C distribution and accumulation in salt-suffering grasslands are still unclear. In this study, we investigated how salt ions affected major elemental composition in plants and whether Si enhanced biomass C accumulation in grassland species in situ . In samples from the margins of salt lakes, our results showed that the differing distance away from the shore resulted in distinctive phytocoenosis, including halophytes and moderately salt-tolerant grasses, which are closely related to changing soil properties. Different salinity (Na + /K + , ranging from 0.02 to 11.8) in plants caused negative effects on plant C content that decreased from 53.9 to 29.2% with the increase in salinity. Plant Si storage [0.02-2.29 g Si m -2 dry weight (dw)] and plant Si content (0.53 to 2.58%) were positively correlated with bioavailable Si in soils (ranging from 94.4 to 192 mg kg -1 ). Although C contents in plants and phytoliths were negatively correlated with plant Si content, biomass C accumulation (1.90-83.5 g C m -2 dw) increased due to the increase of Si storage in plants. Plant phytolith-occluded carbon (PhytOC) increased from 0.07 to 0.28‰ of dry mass with the increase of Si content in moderately salt-tolerant grasses.
