The development of an effective hemostatic agents is of vital importance for saving wounded individuals from uncontrolled hemorrhage, which is the main reason for preventable death after accidental injury. However, current high-performance hemostatic agents suffer from a cumbersome preparation procedures and poor biocompatibility. Here, we engineered a cellulosic-derived aerogel material by simply controlling the drying process of cellulose regeneration for fast hemostasis. Four different freeze-drying pretreatments were investigated. As compared with the other three, the cellulosic aerogel material prepared without freezing pretreatment exhibited the lowest crystallinity (21.3%) and the highest body fluid absorption capacity (20.3 times that of its own weight) due to its super hierarchical porous structure, which led to an excellent hemostatic performance in vitro blood coagulation (≈100 s). Moreover, the addition of gelatin and diatomite in the material could tune the functional groups and electrostatic properties of the aerogel and further enhance its hemostatic performance. Various characterizations, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray nanocomputed tomography (CT), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and zeta potential analysis, were carried out to probe the structure-function relationship of the prepared material, and its mechanism of fast hemostasis was thereafter revealed. The results indicate that the developed aerogel is a cost-effective and feasibly scalable hemostatic material suitable for practical use in industry.

This study proposes a novel anaerobic digestion (AD) strategy combining recyclable photoactivated nanomaterials with illumination to enhance electronic transfer for anaerobic microorganisms. Results showed that 7000 Lux illumination increased methane production yield and rate. Incorporating Fe 3 O 4 into graphite carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) created a recyclable Fe 3 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 (FG) nanocomposite with improved light absorption, conductivity, redox properties, and methane promotion. The highest methane yield from corn straw was achieved with 7000 Lux and 1.5 g/L FG nanocomposite, 22.6% higher than the dark control. The AD system exhibited increased adenosine triphosphate content, improved redox performance, reduced electron transfer resistance, and higher photocurrent intensity. These improvements bolstered the microorganisms and key genes involved in hydrolysis and acidification, which in turn optimized the acetoclastic pathway. Selective deoxygenation of chemicals using non-noble metal-based catalysts poses a significant challenge toward upgrading biomass-derived oxygenates into advanced fuels and fine chemicals. Herein, we report a bifunctional core-shell catalyst (Ni@Al 3 -mSiO 2 ) consisting of Ni nanoparticles closely encapsulated by the Al-doped mesoporous silica shell that achieves 100% vanillin conversion and >99% yield of 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol under 1 MPa H 2 at 130 °C in water. Due to the unique mesoporous core-shell structure, no significant decrease in catalytic activity was observed after 10 recycles. Furthermore, incorporating Al atoms into the silica shell significantly increased the number of acidic sites. Density functional theory calculations reveal the reaction pathway of the vanillin hydrodeoxygenation process and uncover the intrinsic influence of the Al sites. This work not only provides an efficient and cost-effective bifunctional hydrodeoxygenation catalyst but also offers a new synthetic protocol to rationally design promising non-noble metal catalysts for biomass valorization or other widespread applications.

Identifying the stability and phytotoxicity of liquid digestate (LD) is necessary for safe agricultural utilization. Storage temperature, method, and time are critical factors that affect the stability and phytotoxicity of LD. This study therefore aimed to explore the dynamics of stability, phytotoxicity, and microbial community of LD in cattle farms under different storage conditions. The results showed that the contents of solids, organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorous decreased during storage and exhibited temperature dependency. Conversely, the seed germination index increased, which was negatively correlated with dissolved organic carbon and ammonium nitrogen and positively correlated with certain bacteria (Thermovirga and Fastidiosipila). Open storage and/or higher temperature were found to contribute to the stabilization efficiency and phytotoxicity disappearance of LD. Open storage of LD at 30 °C for 60 days and 20 °C for 90 days was safe for its agricultural utilization, while hermetic storage of LD at 30 °C for 120 days and 20 °C for 150 days was safe. Lignocellulose represents the most abundant carbon-capturing substance that is convertible for biofuels and bioproduction. Although biomass pretreatments have been broadly applied to reduce lignocellulose recalcitrance for enhanced enzymatic saccharification, they mostly require strong conditions with potential secondary waste release. By classifying all major types of pretreatments that have been recently conducted with different sources of lignocellulose substrates, this study sorted out their distinct roles for wall polymer extraction and destruction, leading to the optimal pretreatments evaluated for cost-effective biomass enzymatic saccharification to maximize biofuel production. Notably, all undigestible lignocellulose residues are also aimed for effective conversion into value-added bioproduction. Meanwhile, desired pretreatments were proposed for the generation of highly-valuable nanomaterials such as cellulose nanocrystals, lignin nanoparticles, functional wood, carbon dots, porous and graphitic nanocarbons. Upland rice is a distinct ecotype that grows in aerobic environments and tolerates drought stress. However, the genetic basis of its drought resistance is unclear. Here, using an integrative approach combining a genome-wide association study with analyses of introgression lines and transcriptomic profiles, we identify a gene, DROUGHT1 (DROT1), encoding a COBRA-like protein that confers drought resistance in rice. DROT1 is specifically expressed in vascular bundles and is directly repressed by ERF3 and activated by ERF71, both drought-responsive transcription factors. DROT1 improves drought resistance by adjusting cell wall structure by increasing cellulose content and maintaining cellulose crystallinity. A C-to-T single-nucleotide variation in the promoter increases DROT1 expression and drought resistance in upland rice. The potential elite haplotype of DROT1 in upland rice could originate in wild rice (O. rufipogon) and may be beneficial for breeding upland rice varieties., (© 2022. The Author(s).)

Ensiling is an effective storage strategy for agricultural biomass, especially for energy crops (mainly energy grasses and maize). However, the ensiling of excessively wilted crop straw is limited due to material characteristics, such as a high lignocellulosic content and low water-soluble carbohydrate and moisture contents. In this study, acetic acid or hetero-fermentative lactic acid bacterial community (hetero-fermentative LAB) were employed as silage additives to improve the ensiling process of excessively wilted wheat straw (EWS). The results showed that the additives inhibited the growth of Enterobacteriaceae and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_12, whose abundances decreased from 55.8% to 0.03-0.2%, respectively. The growth of Lactobacillus was accelerated, and the abundances increased from 1.3% to 80.1-98.4% during the ensiling process. Lactic acid fermentation was the dominant metabolic pathway in the no additive treatment. The additives increased acetic acid fermentation and preserved the hemicellulose and cellulose contents, increasing the methane yield by 17.7-23.9%. Pretreatment is the initial stage of lignocellulosic biorefinery process, but is limited by the time-consuming processes, harsh conditions and/or undesirable products. Herein, a mild (<60 °C) and highly efficient pretreatment strategy is developed. The novel mechanocatalytical reaction system driven by fluid shear force helps to exfoliate cellulose from lignocellulose, and the heat generated by the shear process can be used to precipitate and recover the dissolved cellulose from the precooled NaOH/urea solution. The regenerated cellulose shows satisfying crystal structure (cellulose II), significantly decreased crystallinity and nearly tripled enzymolysis glucose yield. Almost 90% of lignin and hemicellulose could be rapidly separated. The separated lignin shows a nearly native structure with 64% β-O-4 linkage, which is even higher than the ball-milling lignin (60%). The development of biogas projects feed by lignocellulosic biomass has been constrained by the high cost of pre- and post-treatment. In this study, a novel strategy for pretreatment by using two by-products, i.e., CO 2 and liquid digestate (LD), generated from anaerobic digestion (AD) was developed to overcome these shortcomings. Results showed that corn straw pretreated in LD pressurized under 1 Mpa CO 2 at 55 ℃ resulted in increased glucose and xylose contents and a 9.80% decrease in cellulose crystallinity. After 45 days of AD conversion, the methane yield increased by 50.97% compared with untreated straw. However, pretreatment in LD pressurized under 1 Mpa CO 2 at 170 ℃ produced 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and furfural, which led to a decrease in methane production from the straw in the subsequent AD conversion. Improving biomass enzymatic saccharification is effective for crop straw utilization, whereas phytoremediation is efficient for trace metal elimination from polluted agricultural soil. Here, we found that the green proteins extracted from Amaranthus leaf tissue could act as active biosurfactant to remarkably enhance lignocellulose enzymatic saccharification for high bioethanol production examined in eight grassy and woody plants after mild chemical and green-like pretreatments were performed. Notably, this study estimated that total green proteins supply collected from one-hectare-land Amaranth plants could even lead to additional 6400-12,400 tons of bioethanol, being over 10-fold bioethanol yield higher than those of soybean seed proteins and chemical surfactant. Meanwhile, the Amaranth green proteins were characterized as a dominated biosorbent for multiple trace metals (Cd, Pb, As) adsorption, being 2.9-6 folds higher than those of its lignocellulose. The Amaranth plants were also assessed to accumulate much more trace metals than all other plants as previously examined from large-scale contaminated soils. Furthermore, the Amaranth green proteins not only effectively block lignin to release active cellulases for the mostly enhanced biomass hydrolyzes, but also efficiently involve in multiple chemical bindings with Cd, which should thus address critical issues of high-costly biomass waste utilization and low-efficient trace metal remediation., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. The mechanisms and enhancing effects of different biochar loadings on the digesters receiving low and high excess (or anaerobic) sludge loadings were thoroughly examined in the present study. This was done to explore an efficient method for converting excess sludge to anaerobic sludge. Biochar had an obvious effect on the anaerobic digestion of excess sludge but not on the anaerobic sludge. When the amount of biochar added was equivalent to 100% of the sludge TS, the cumulative methane yields of anaerobic digestion inoculated with small and large amounts of excess sludge were respectively 30.2 and 1.7 times that of those without biochar. The number of methanogens in the digesters that received small and large inoculations of excess sludge with 100% biochar, were respectively 105.4% and 20.6% higher than those without biochar. The biochar enhanced the systems performance because it selectively enriched the Trichococcus and Methanomicrobiales tightly attach to it. This enhanced the synergy and overall activity of the system by promoting biofilm development. Lignin, an underutilized component of lignocellulosic biomass, is regarded as a rich reservoir for the production of aromatic chemicals and fuels. Despite extensive research in recent years, lignin's potential is far from being fully unlocked. Photocatalysis that uses sustainable solar energy to drive lignin conversion under mild conditions has been identified as a promising strategy and received growing research interest. This review aims to present a critical introduction to the photocatalytic conversion of lignin, including a summary of lignin conversion pathways and mechanisms, as well as the latest cutting-edge innovations on photocatalyst design and reactor construction. The fabrication of nitrogen-doped activated carbons (N-ACs) from leather solid wastes (LSW), a huge underutilized bioresource, by different activation methods was investigated. N-AC prepared by KOH activation (named KNAC) exhibited superior physical and chemical properties with much higher BET surface area (2247 m 2 g -1 ) and more abundant hierarchical micropores than those activated by nano-CaCO 3 (CNAC) or by direct carbonization (NNAC). KOH activation decreased the total nitrogen content in KNAC, but it increased the ratio of surface nitrogen species. KOH activation also significantly promoted the conversion of nitrogen species in the carbon material to pyridinic N. Potential applications of the prepared N-ACs were evaluated, and they were tested as adsorbents to remove phenols from water and as the anodes of lithium batteries. The high surface area, abundant micropores, and plentiful surface pyridinic N guaranteed KNAC a superior nitrogen-doped activated carbon that could serve as an excellent adsorbent to remove phenols (282 mg/g) from waste water as well as an outstanding electrode material with a high and stable charge/discharge capacity (533.54 mAh g -1 after 150th cycle). Background: As a leading biomass feedstock, poplar plants provide enormous lignocellulose resource convertible for biofuels and bio-chemicals. However, lignocellulose recalcitrance particularly in wood plants, basically causes a costly bioethanol production unacceptable for commercial marketing with potential secondary pollution to the environment. Therefore, it becomes important to reduce lignocellulose recalcitrance by genetic modification of plant cell walls, and meanwhile to establish advanced biomass process technology in woody plants. Brassinosteroids, plant-specific steroid hormones, are considered to participate in plant growth and development for biomass production, but little has been reported about brassinosteroids roles in plant cell wall assembly and modification. In this study, we generated transgenic poplar plant that overexpressed DEETIOLATED2 gene for brassinosteroids overproduction. We then detected cell wall feature alteration and examined biomass enzymatic saccharification for bioethanol production under various chemical pretreatments., Results: Compared with wild type, the PtoDET2 overexpressed transgenic plants contained much higher brassinosteroids levels. The transgenic poplar also exhibited significantly enhanced plant growth rate and biomass yield by increasing xylem development and cell wall polymer deposition. Meanwhile, the transgenic plants showed significantly improved lignocellulose features such as reduced cellulose crystalline index and degree of polymerization values and decreased hemicellulose xylose/arabinose ratio for raised biomass porosity and accessibility, which led to integrated enhancement on biomass enzymatic saccharification and bioethanol yield under various chemical pretreatments. In contrast, the CRISPR/Cas9-generated mutation of PtoDET2 showed significantly lower brassinosteroids level for reduced biomass saccharification and bioethanol yield, compared to the wild type. Notably, the optimal green-like pretreatment could even achieve the highest bioethanol yield by effective lignin extraction in the transgenic plant. Hence, this study proposed a mechanistic model elucidating how brassinosteroid regulates cell wall modification for reduced lignocellulose recalcitrance and increased biomass porosity and accessibility for high bioethanol production., Conclusions: This study has demonstrated a powerful strategy to enhance cellulosic bioethanol production by regulating brassinosteroid biosynthesis for reducing lignocellulose recalcitrance in the transgenic poplar plants. A composted material derived from biogas production residues, spent mushroom substrate (SMS) and pig manure was evaluated as a partial or total replacement for peat in growth medium for tomato and pepper seedlings. Five different substrates were tested: T1, compost + perlite (5:1, v:v); T2, compost + peat + perlite (4:1:1, v:v:v); T3, compost + peat + perlite (2.5:2.5:1, v:v:v); T4, compost + peat + perlite (1:4:1, v:v:v); and CK, a commercial peat + perlite (5:1, v:v). The physical-chemical characteristics of the various media were analyzed, and the germination rate and morphological growth were also measured. Real-time Quantitative PCR (qPCR) was used to quantify Fusarium concentrations. The addition of compost to peat-based growth medium increased the pH, electrical conductivity, air porosity, bulk density, and nutrition (NPK), and decreased the water holding capacity and total porosity. The use of compost did not affect the percent germination at day 15 of the tomato and pepper seedlings. The addition of compost resulted in better or comparable seedling quality compared with CK and fertilized CK. The best growth parameters were seen in tomato and pepper seedlings grown in T1 and T2, with higher morphological growth in comparison with CK and fertilized CK. However, T2 showed the highest Fusarium concentration compared to compost and all growth media. Fusarium concentrations in T1, T3, and T4 did not differ significantly from those in CK for tomato seedlings, and those in T1 and T4 were also similar to those in CK for pepper seedlings. The results suggest that biogas residues and SMS compost is a good alternative to peat, allowing 100% replacement, and that 20-50% replacement produces tomato and pepper seedlings with higher morphological growth and lower Fusarium concentrations., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. In this study, the impact of pig manure on the maturity of compost consisting of spent mushroom substrate and rice husks was accessed. The results showed that the addition of pig manure (SMS-PM) reached 50°C 5days earlier and lasted 15days longer than without pig manure (SMS). Furthermore, the addition of pig manure improved nutrition and germination index. High-throughput 16S rRNA pyrosequencing was used to evaluate the bacterial and fungal composition during the composting process of SMS-PM compared to SMS alone. The SMS treatment showed a relatively higher abundance of carbon-degrading microbes (Bacillaceae and Thermomyces) and plant pathogenic fungi (Sordariomycetes&#95;unclassified) at the end of the compost. In contrast, the SMS-PM showed an increased bacterial diversity with anti-pathogen (Pseudomonas). The results indicated that the addition of pig manure improved the decomposition of refractory carbon from the spent mushroom substrate and promoted the maturity and nutritional content of the compost product., (Copyright © 2017. Ensilage is a commonly used method of preserving energy crops for biogas production. However, aerobic deterioration of silage is an inevitable problem. This study investigated the effect of aerobic deterioration on methane production and microbial community dynamics through anaerobic digestion (AD) of maize stalk silage, following 9days air exposure of silage. After air exposure, hydrolytic activity and methanogenic archaea amount in AD were reduced, decreasing the specific methane yield (SMY); whereas lignocellulose decomposition during exposure improved the degradability of silage in AD and enhanced SMY, partially compensating the dry matter (DM) loss. 29.3% of the DM and 40.7% of methane yield were lost following 0-9days exposure. Metagenomic analysis showed a shift from Clostridia to Bacteroidia and Anaerolineae in AD after silage deterioration; Methanosaetaceae was the dominant methanogenic archaea., (Copyright © 2017. Fe is widely used as an additive in anaerobic digestion, but its bioavailability and the mechanism by which it enhances digestion are unclear. In this study, sequential extraction was used to measure Fe bioavailability, while biochemical parameters, kinetics model and Q-PCR (fluorescence quantitative PCR) were used to explore its mechanism of stimulation. The results showed that sequential extraction is a suitable method to assess the anaerobic system bioavailability of Fe, which is low and fluctuates to a limited extent (1.7 to -3.1wt%), indicating that it would be easy for Fe levels to be insufficient. Methane yield increased when the added Fe 2+ was 10-500mg/L. Appropriate amounts of Fe 2+ accelerated the decomposition of rice straw and facilitated methanogen metabolism, thereby improving reactor performance. Molasses is a typical feedstock for fermentation, but the effluent is hard to treat. In this study, molasses containing a high concentration of organic matter was treated by a two-stage Fix-bed reactor system with an increased organic loading rate (OLR). The results indicated at high molasses loading rate, the two-stage system was more efficient (i.e. organic matter removal, the COD of effluent and biogas production) than the single-stage system. The relative abundance of Anaerolineaceae and W5&#95;norank was higher in the first stage (R1), where these organisms digest carbohydrates, while the second stage (R2) had higher relative abundance of Synergistaceae and SB-1&#95;norank, which digest VFAs and decomposition-resistant compounds to produce compounds used by hydrogen methanogens. Silage processing has a crucial positive impact on the methane yield of anaerobic treated substrates. Changes in the characteristics of switchgrass after ensiling with different additives and their effects on methane production and microbial community changes during anaerobic digestion were investigated. After ensiling (CK), methane yield was increased by 33.59% relative to that of fresh switchgrass (FS). In comparison with the CK treatment, methane production was improved by 17.41%, 13.08% and 8.72% in response to ensiling with LBr+X, LBr and X, respectively. A modified Gompertz model predicted that the optimum treatment was LBr+X, with a potential cumulative methane yield of 178.31mL/g total solids (TS) and a maximum biogas production rate of 44.39mL/g TS·d. Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes were the predominant bacteria in FS and silage switchgrass; however, the switchgrass treated with LBr+X was rich in Synergistetes, which was crucial for methane production., (Copyright © 2017. Although trace elements are known to aid anaerobic digestion, their mechanism of action is still unclear. High-throughput sequencing was used to reveal the mechanism by which adding trace elements affects microbial communities and their action. The results showed that the highest methane yields, with addition of Fe, Mo, Se and Mn were 289.2, 289.6, 285.3, 293.0mL/g volatile solids (VS), respectively. The addition of Fe, Mo, Se and Mn significantly (P<0.05) reduced the level of volatile fatty acids (VFAs). The dominant bacteria and archaea were Bacteroidetes and Methanosaeta, respectively. Compared with the proportion of Methanosaeta in the control group, treatment with added trace elements increased Methanosaeta by as much as 12.4%. Microbial community analysis indicated that adding trace elements changed the composition and diversity of archaea and bacteria. The ready formation of scum in vertical reactors has been a bottleneck in the digestion of lignocellulosic materials for biogas production. This study describes a single vertical reactor that integrates the acidogenic and methanogenic phases of this process. The effects of two types of maize stover feedstock (fresh and silage) and two mixing intensities (20 and 70rpm) on methane yield were orthogonally determined. Fresh maize stover yielded approximately 14% more methane than silage maize stover. Mixing at 20rpm contributed to methane yield, while mixing at 70rpm blurred the phase boundary, resulting in accumulation of volatile fatty acids and loss of methanogens. The upper and lower phases clearly constituted a two-phase fermentation system. Clostridiales occupied the acidogenic phase, while the predominant bacteria in the methanogenic phase were Bacteroidetes, Chloroflexi, and Synergistetes. A two-phase digestion system for treating agricultural waste is beneficial for methane production. This study explored the effect of solid content, temperature, and mixing mode on the process of hydrolysis and acidification using rice straw and cow dung launched in non-airtight acidogenic system. The results showed that the substrate could be hydrolyzed efficiently in the initial stage, the hydrolysis coefficient (k) of maximum cellulose and hemicellulose can be increased by 217.9% and 290.5%, respectively, compared with those of middle and last stages. High solid content played a leading role in promoting hydrolysis, resulted in hydrolysate content (sCOD) that was significantly higher than in treatments with low solid content (P<0.01), and led to organic acids accumulation up to 5.8 and 6.7g/L at mesophilic and thermophilic temperatures. Thermophilic temperature stimulated the hydrolysis and acidification of low solid content (P<0.05), and improved organic acid accumulation of high solid content only during the middle stage (P<0.01). Mixing mode was not a major factor, but increasing the mixing time was necessary for organic acid accumulation during the last stage (P<0.05). Silage and dry are the two typical cornstalk forms. Either form could be used as substrate in biogas plants and might be replaced by another when shortage occurred. This study focused on the feeding sequence of these two kinds of feedstocks, aiming to discuss their specific methane potential (SMP). A 15-day hydraulic retention time was chosen for semi-continuous experiments based on the batch test results. In semi-continuous experiments, before and after feedstocks were exchanged, the significantly decreased and comparable SMPs of silage and dry cornstalks indicated that a basis of unstable digestion would result in incomplete methane release from the subsequent digestion. A higher similarity of bacterial community structure and greater quantity of bacteria were shown in acidified silage cornstalk digestion through band similarity analysis. Methanosaetaceae and methanomicrobiales were the predominant methanogens, and aceticlastic methanogenesis was the main route for methane production. The different feeding sequences affected the hydrolysis course and further influenced the methanogenic proliferation. Our work suggests that silage cornstalk digestion should be conducted before dry cornstalk digestion.

A series of 2D sheet Bi2OxS3-x/Nb6O17 (Bi/Nb) heterostructure photocatalysts were synthesized through a facile hydrothermal vulcanization method between Bi(3+) exchanged K4Nb6O17 and thiourea (NH2CSNH2). XRD results confirm that the heterostructures were composed of Bi2OxS3-x and Nb6O17. HRTEM indicates that Bi2OxS3-x was successfully intercalated into layers of K4Nb6O17. Such large interfacial contacts can be beneficial to the transfer and separation of photogenerated charge carriers. Thus the composites exhibit good photocatalytic performance for the degradation of methyl orange (MO) under visible light irradiation (λ > 400 nm), which is superior to that of both precursors, pure Bi2S3 and K4Nb6O17. Radical capture tests reveal that photogenerated holes h(+) and ˙O2(-) play important roles in the photodegradation of MO. And based on the UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) and the band gap of the semiconductors, the mechanism of the enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity of these composites has been proposed.

Bioaugmentation using microbial consortia is helpful in some anaerobic digestion (AD) systems, but accelerated acidification to produce methane has not been performed effectively with corn stalks and cow dung. In this study, the thermophilic microbial consortia MC1 was inoculated into a complex open environment (unsterilized and sterilized systems) to evaluate the feasibility of bioaugmentation to improve acidification efficiency. The results indicated that MC1 itself degraded lignocellulose efficiently, and accumulated more organic acids within 3days. Similar trends were also observed in the unsterilized system, where the hemicellulose degradation rate and organic acid concentrations increased significantly by two-fold and 20.1% (P<0.05), respectively, and clearly reduced the loss of product. Microbial composition did not change obviously after inoculating MC1, but the abundance of members of MC1, such as Bacillus and Clostridium, increased clearly on day 3. Organic light-emitting field-effect transistors (OLEFETs) are regarded as a novel kind of device architecture for fulfilling electrical-pumped organic lasers. However, the realization of OLEFETs with high external quantum efficiency (EQE) and high brightness simultaneously is still a tough task. Moreover, the design of the resonator structure in LED is far from satisfactory. Here, OLEFETs with EQE of 1.5% at the brightness of 2600 cdm(-2), and the corresponding ON/OFF ratio and current efficiency reaches above 10(4) and 3.1 cdA(-1), respectively, were achieved by introducing 1,4,5,8,9,12-hexaazatriphenylene-hexacarbonitrile (HAT-CN) as a charge generation layer. Moreover, a vertical microcavity based on distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) and Ag source/drain electrodes is successfully introduced into the high performance OLEFETs, which results in electroluminescent spectrum linewidth narrowing from 96 nm to 6.9 nm. The results manifest the superiority of the vertical microcavity as an optical resonator in OLEFETs, which sheds some light on achieving the electrically pumped organic lasers.

The use of biological pretreatment in anaerobic digestion systems has some potential; however, to date, these methods have not been able to effectively increase methane production of lignocellulose of municipal solid waste (LMSW). In this study a thermophilic microbial consortium (MC1) was used as a pretreatment method in order to enhance biogas and methane production yields. The results indicated that sCOD concentration increased significantly in the early stages of pretreatment. Ethanol, acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid were the predominant volatile organic products in the MC1 hydrolysate. Biogas and methane production yields of LMSW significantly increased following MC1 pretreatment. For the fixed-bed reactors in this experiment, during 40 days of stable operation and under different organic loading shocks, biogas production remained stable at 21 L, effluent pH remained between 6.8 and 7.5, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency and the biogas methane content were greater than 80% and 75%, respectively. The community was analyzed using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), 16S rRNA gene clone library screening, and quantitative PCR. Findings revealed that bacteria and methanogenic archaea were typically dominant in the adhering sludge. Methanomicrobiales was identified in carbon fiber carriers, they were breeding slowly, and attached easily. The 16S rRNA gene concentration of methanogenic archaea was higher in the adhering sludge than in the deposited sludge. Our results indicated that the colonization of the microorganism played a very important role in the carbon fiber carriers, as well as in the improvement of sludge activity and the shock resistance of the reactor., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. A novel two-phase anaerobic treatment technology was developed to treat high-concentration organic cassava bioethanol wastewater. The start-up process and contribution of organics (COD, total nitrogen, and NH4 +-N) removal in spatial succession of the whole process and spatial microbial diversity changing when sampling were analyzed. The results of the start-up phase showed that the organic loading rate could reach up to 10 kg COD/m(3)d, with the COD removal rate remaining over 90% after 25 days. The sample results indicated that the contribution of COD removal in the pre-anaerobic and anaerobic phases was 40% and 60%, respectively, with the highest efficiency of 98.5%; TN and NH4 +-N had decreased to 0.05 g/l and 0.90 g/l, respectively, and the mineralization rate of total nitrogen was 94.8%, 76.56% of which was attributed to the anaerobic part. The microbial diversity changed remarkably among different sample points depending on the physiological characteristics of identified strains. Moraxellaceae, Planococcaceae, and Prevotellaceae were dominant in the pre-anaerobic phase and Bacteroidetes, Campylobacterales, Acinetobacter, Lactobacillus, Clostridium, and Bacillus for the anaerobic phase. Methanosarcinaceae and Methanosaeta were the two main phylotypes in the anaerobic reactor.

A microbial consortium MC1 was used to pretreat filter paper, office paper, newspaper, and cardboard to enhance methane production. The results of pretreatment indicated that sCOD of hydrolysates of the four substrates increased significantly in the early stage, and peaked on day 7. During pretreatment, ethanol, acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, and glycerol were the predominant volatile organic products in hydrolysates. MC1 had strong degradation ability on the four substrates, and the weight loss of filter paper, office paper, newspaper, and cardboard reached 78.3%, 80.5%, 39.7%, and 49.7%, respectively. The results of anaerobic digestion showed that methane production yields and rates of the four substrates significantly increased after pretreatment. This study is the first attempt to explore the microbial pretreatment method for anaerobic digestion of waste paper and cardboard. The methane potential of nine varieties of fresh maize harvested at three different times and of maize silage was experimentally determined in batch assays. The ultimate methane productivity in terms of volatile solids (VS) was determined as 213.94-313.63, 195.88-334.81 mL/g VS from several fresh and silage maize in three stages, respectively. The average specific methane yield of wax ripeness stage for fresh maize and full ripeness stage for silage maize were higher than that of other stages, respectively. The high-oil varieties of fresh maize and silage varieties of ensiling maize could produce more methane than general varieties in the same ripeness stage. Methane yield of ensiled materials was higher than fresh material. The methane yields of fresh and silage maize in full ripeness stage were ranged 5656-7956 and 4633-8915 m(3)/ha, respectively. The effect of temperature on the functionality of microbial community structure in a low temperature, anaerobic fixed-bed reactor was studied by decreasing the operating temperature from 18 °C to 5 °C. The reactor was productive within 20 days and produced stable methane content in biogas (above 77%) throughout the trial period. At 17 °C and 15 °C, chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency and biogas production of reactor were significantly reduced. These might be temperature thresholds when fixed-bed reactors are operated under low temperatures. The methanogen community composition was analyzed using 16S rRNA gene clone library screening and quantitative PCR. At low ambient temperatures, Methanomicrobiales were dominant methanogens, and they preferentially adhered to the carbon fiber carrier. The results indicated that 16S rRNA levels of Methanomicrobiales and Methanosaetaceae in adhering sludge were higher than in deposited sludge, and they all contributed to the efficient performance of the fixed-bed reactor at low operating temperatures., (Crown Copyright © 2011. To obtain an efficient natural lignocellulolytic complex enzyme, we screened an efficient lignocellulose degrading composite microbial system (XDC-2) from composted agricultural and animal wastes amended soil following a long-term directed acclimation. The XDC-2 could not only degrade natural lignocelluloses, but could also secret extracellular xylanase efficiently in liquid culture under static conditions at room temperature. The XDC-2 degraded rice straw by 60.3% after fermentation for 15 days. Hemicelluloses were decomposed effectively, while the extracellular xylanase activity was dominant with an activity of 8.357 U ml-1 on day 6 of the fermentation period. The extracellular crude enzyme noticeably hydrolyzed natural lignocelluloses. The optimum temperature and pH for the xylanase activity were 40 degrees and 6.0. However, the xylanase was activated in a wide pH range of 3.0-10.0, and retained more than 80% of its activity at 25-35 degrees and pH 5.0-8.0 after three days of incubation in liquid culture under static conditions. PCR-DGGE analysis of successive subculture indicated that the XDC-2 was structurally stable over long-term restricted and directed cultivation. Analysis of 16S rRNA gene clone library showed that the XDC-2 was mainly composed of mesophilic bacteria related to the genera Clostridium, Bacteroides, Alcaligenes, Pseudomonas, etc. Our results offer a new approach to exploring efficient lignocellulolytic enzymes by constructing a high-performance composite microbial system with synergistic complex enzymes.

The composite microbial system of MC1 was used to degrade corn stalk in order to determine properties of the degraded products as well as bacterial composition of MC1. Results indicated that the pH of the fermentation broth was typical of lignocellulose degradation by MC1, decreasing in the early phase and increasing in later stages of the degradation. The microbial biomass peaked on the day 3 after degradation. The MC1 efficiently degraded the corn stalk by nearly 70% during which its cellulose content decreased by 71.2%, hemicellulose by 76.5% and lignin by 24.6%. The content of water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC) in the fermentation broth increased progressively during the first three days, and decreased thereafter, suggesting an accumulation of WSC in the early phase of the degradation process. Total levels of various volatile products peaked in the third day after degradation, and 7 types of volatile products were detected in the fermentation broth. These were ethanol, acetic acid, 1,2-ethanediol, propanoic acid, butanoic acid, 3-methyl-butanoic acid and glycerine. Six major compounds were quantitatively analysed and the contents of each compound were ethanol (0.584 g/L), acetic acid (0.735 g/L), 1,2-ethanediol (0.772 g/L), propanoic acid (0.026 g/L), butanoic acid (0.018 g/L) and glycerine (4.203 g/L). Characterization of bacterial cells collected from the culture solution, based on 16S rDNA PCR-DGGE analysis of DNAs, showed that the composition of bacterial community in MC1 coincided basically with observations from previous studies. This indicated that the structure of MC1 is very stable during degradation of different lignocellulose materials.
