Iron-bound organic carbon (Fe-OC) is a main pathway for the long-term maintenance of soil organic carbon (SOC), but research on its mechanism is still relatively weak. We investigated the coupling relationships among iron (Fe), carbon (C) and Fe-reducing bacteria (FeRB) in the soil of a reclaimed paddy field in comparison with natural Phragmites australis wetland in the Minjiang River estuary in southeastern China. The results showed that conversion of P. australis wetland to paddy cultivation changed the soil redox process. After reclamation, soil Fe(II), Fe(III), HCl-Fe t , free iron oxide (Fe d ) and amorphous iron (Fe o ) contents and Fe(III)/Fe(II) decreased significantly (p < 0.05), while the content of complexed iron (Fe p ) increased. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling analysis (NMDS) demonstrated variability in FeRB across soil types (r = 0.900, p = 0.001). The lower Fe-OC concentration in soil after wetland reclamation may be the result of Fe reduction by dissimilatory FeRB (e.g., Bacillus, Anaeromyxobacter). On average, both Fe-OC and SOC contents decreased significantly (p < 0.05), while the contribution of Fe-OC to total SOC (f Fe-OC ) increased significantly (p < 0.05), after conversion to paddy cultivation. Structural equation modeling (SEM) showed that SOC, dissolved organic C, and Fe-OC were affected by FeRB and the speciation of Fe. In addition, Fe (III) concentration affected SOC concentration (r = 0.60, p < 0.05) and DOC concentration (r = 0.58, p < 0.05), and Fe d affected DOC concentration (r = 0.69, p < 0.05). Alpine wetlands are critical ecosystems for global carbon (C) cycling and climate change mitigation. Ecological restoration projects for alpine grazing wetlands are urgently needed, especially due to their critical role as carbon (C) sinks. However, the fate of the C pool in alpine wetlands after restoration from grazing remains unclear. In this study, soil samples from both grazed and restored wetlands in Zoige (near Hongyuan County, Sichuan Province, China) were collected to analyze soil organic carbon (SOC) fractions, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), soil properties, and plant biomass. Moreover, the Tea Bag Index (TBI) was applied to assess the initial decomposition rate ( k ) and stabilization factor ( S ), providing a novel perspective on SOC dynamics. The results of this research revealed that the mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC) was 1.40 times higher in restored sites compared to grazed sites, although no significant difference in particulate organic carbon (POC) was detected between the two site types. Furthermore, the increased MAOC after restoration exhibited a significant positive correlation with various parameters including S , C and N content, aboveground biomass, WSOC, AMF diversity, and NH 4 + . The interaction between tannins and proteins has been studied intensively for more than half a century as a result of its significance for various applications. In chemical ecology, tannins are involved in response to environmental stress, including biotic (pathogens and herbivores) and abiotic (e.g., drought) stress, and in carbon (C) and nutrient cycling. This perspective summarizes the newest insights into the role of tannins in soil processes, including the interaction with fungi leading to C stabilization. Recent knowledge presented here may help to optimize land management to increase or preserve soil C to mitigate climate change.

The rhizosphere is the central hotspot of water and nutrient uptake by plants, rhizodeposition, microbial activities, and plant-soil-microbial interactions. The plasticity of plants offers possibilities to engineer the rhizosphere to mitigate climate change. We define rhizosphere engineering as targeted manipulation of plants, soil, microorganisms, and management to shift rhizosphere processes for specific aims [e.g., carbon (C) sequestration]. The rhizosphere components can be engineered by agronomic, physical, chemical, biological, and genomic approaches. These approaches increase plant productivity with a special focus on C inputs belowground, increase microbial necromass production, protect organic compounds and necromass by aggregation, and decrease C losses. Conservation tillage has been shown to mitigate climate change by promoting the sequestration of soil carbon (C) in agroecosystems. However, knowledge on how conservation tillage accumulates soil organic C (SOC), especially at the aggregate scale, remains limited. This study aimed to clarify the effects of conservation tillage on SOC accumulation by measuring hydrolytic and oxidative enzyme activities and C mineralization in aggregates and developing an extended scheme of C flows between aggregate fractions using the 13 C natural abundance (δ 13 C) method. Topsoils (0-10 cm) were sampled from a 21-year tillage experiment located in the Loess Plateau of China. Compared with conventional (CT) and reduced tillage with straw removal (RT), no-till (NT) and subsoiling with straw mulching (SS) enhanced the proportions of macro-aggregates (> 0.25 mm) (by 12-26%) and SOC contents in bulk soils and all aggregate fractions (by 12-53%). In bulk soils and all aggregate fractions, SOC mineralization and the activities of hydrolases (β-1,4-glucosidase, β-acetylglucosaminidase, β-xylosidase, and cellobiohydrolase) and oxidases (peroxidase and phenol oxidase) were 9-35% and 8-56% lower, respectively, under NT and SS than under CT and RT. Partial least squares path model revealed that reductions in the activities of hydrolases and oxidases and increases in macro-aggregation decreased SOC mineralization in bulk soils and macro-aggregates. Furthermore, Δ 13 C values (aggregate-associated δ 13 C - bulk-soil δ 13 C) increased with decreasing size of soil aggregates, suggesting that C is younger in larger aggregates than in smaller aggregates. The probability of C flows from large to small soil aggregates was lower under NT and SS than under CT and RT, indicating that young SOC with low rates of decomposition in macro-aggregates was better protected under NT and SS. Overall, NT and SS enhanced SOC accumulation in macro-aggregates by decreasing the activities of hydrolases and oxidases and C flows from macro- to micro-aggregates, which promoted C sequestration in soils. Litter decomposition is the main source of soil organic carbon (SOC) pool, regarding as an important part of terrestrial ecosystem C dynamics. The turnover of SOC is mainly regulated by extracellular enzymes secreted by microorganisms. However, the response mechanism of soil C-degrading enzymes and SOC in litter decomposition remains unclear. To clarify how SOC fraction dynamics respond to C-degrading enzymes in litter decomposition, we used field experiments to collect leaf litter and SOC fractions from the underlying layer in Robinia pseudoacacia plantations on the Loess Plateau. Our results showed that SOC, easily oxidizable organic C, dissolved organic C, and microbial biomass C increased significantly during the decomposition process. Litter decomposition significantly decreased soil hydrolase activity, but slightly increased oxidase activity. Correlation analysis results showed that SOC fractions were significantly positively correlated with the litter mass, lignin, soil moisture, and oxidase activity, but significantly negatively correlated with cellulose content and soil pH. Partial least squares path models revealed that soil C-degrading enzymes can directly or indirectly affect the changes of soil C fractions. The most direct factors affecting the SOC fractions of topsoil during litter decomposition were litter lignin and cellulose degradation, soil pH, and C-degrading enzymes. Furthermore, regression analysis showed that the decrease of SOC stability in litter decomposition was closely related to the decrease of soil hydrolase to oxidase ratio. These results highlighted that litter degradation-induced changes in C-degrading enzyme activity significantly affected SOC fractions. Furthermore, the distribution of soil hydrolases and oxidases affected the stability of SOC during litter decomposition. Goethite, hematite, ferrihydrite, and other iron oxides bind through various sorption reactions with humic substances (HS) in soils creating nano-, micro-, and macro-aggregates with a specific nature and stability. Long residence times of soil organic matter (SOM) have been attributed to iron-humic substance (Fe-HS) complexes due to physical protection and chemical stabilization at the organic-mineral interface. Humic acids (HA) and fulvic acids (FA) contain many acidic functional groups that interact with Fe oxides through different mechanisms. Due to the numerous interactions between mineral Fe and natural SOM, much research has led into a better identification and definition of HS. In this review, we first focus on the surface colloidal properties of Fe oxides and their reactivity toward HS. These minerals can be efficiently identified by usual techniques, such as XRD, FTIR spectroscopy, XAS, Mössbauer, diffuse reflectance spectroscopies (DRS), HRTEM, ATM, NanoSIMS. Second, we present the recent state of art regarding the adsorption/precipitation of HS onto iron mineral surfaces and their effects on binding metalloid and trace elements. Finally, we consider future research directions based on recent scientific literature, with particular focus on the ability of Fe nano-particles to increase Fe bioavailability, improve carbon sequestration, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and decrease the impact of persistent organic and inorganic pollutants. The methodology in this field has rapidly developed over the last decade. A detailed and global quantitative assessment of the distribution of pyrogenic carbon (PyC) in soils remains unaccounted due to the current lack of unbiased methods for its routine quantification in environmental samples. Conventional oxidation with potassium dichromate has been reported as a useful approach for the determination of recalcitrant C in soils. However, its inaccuracy due to the presence of residual non-polar but still non-PyC requires additional analysis by 13 C solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, which is expensive and time consuming. The goal of this work is to examine the possibility of applying infrared (IR) spectroscopy as a potential alternative. Different soil type samples (paddy soil, Histic Humaquept, Leptosol and Cambisol) have been used. The soils were digested with potassium dichromate to determine the PyC content in environmental samples. Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression was used to build calibration models to predict PyC from IR spectra. A set of artificially produced samples rich in PyC was used as reference to observe in detail the IR bands derived from aromatic structures resistant to dichromate oxidation, representing black carbon. The results showed successful PLS forecasting of PyC in the different samples by using spectra in the 1800-400 cm -1 range. This lead to significant (P < 0.05) cross-validation coefficients for PyC, determined as the aryl C content of the oxidized residue. The Variable Importance for Projection (VIP) traces for the corresponding PLS regression models plotted in the whole IR range indicates the extent to which each IR band contributes to explain the aryl C and PyC contents. In fact, forecasting PyC in soils requires information from several IR regions. In addition to the expected IR bands corresponding to aryl C, other bands are informing about the patterns of oxygen-containing functional groups and the mineralogical composition characteristic of the soils with greater black carbon storage capacity. The VIP traces of the charred biomass samples confirm that aromatic bands (1620 and 1510 cm -1 ) are the most important in the prediction model for PyC-rich samples. Tillage intensive cropping practices have deteriorated soil physical quality and decreased soil organic carbon (SOC) levels in rice-growing areas of South Asia. Consequently, crop productivity has declined over the years demonstrating the need for sustainable alternatives. Given that, a field experiment was conducted for six years to assess the impact of four tillage based crop establishment treatments [puddled transplant rice followed by conventional tillage in wheat/maize (CTTPR-CT), non-puddled transplant rice followed by zero-tillage in wheat/maize (NPTPR-ZT), zero-till transplant rice followed by zero-tillage in wheat/maize (ZTTPR-ZT), zero-tillage direct seeded rice followed by zero-tillage in wheat/maize (ZTDSR-ZT)], two residue management treatments [residue removal, residue retention (~33%)], and two cropping systems [rice-wheat, rice-maize] on soil aggregation, carbon pools, nutrient availability, and crop productivity. After six years of rotation, in top 0.2 m soil depth, zero-till crop establishment treatments (ZTTPR-ZT and ZTDSR-ZT) had higher ( p  < 0.05) total organic carbon (TOC) over conventional tillage treatment (CTTPR-CT). Zero-till crop establishment treatments increased very-labile C faction (C frac 1 ) by 21% followed by labile fraction (C frac 2 ) (16%), non-labile fraction (C frac 4 ) (13%) and less-labile fraction (C frac 3 ) (7%). Notably, higher passive C-pool in conservation tillage practices over CTTPR-CT suggests that conservation tillage could stabilize the recalcitrant form of carbon that persists longer in the soil. Meantime, zero-till crop establishment treatments had higher ( p  < 0.05) water stable macro-aggregates, macro-aggregates: micro-aggregates ratio and aggregate carbon content over CTTPR-CT. The treatment NPTPR-ZT significantly increased soil quality parameters over CTTPR-CT. However, the effect was not as prominent as that of ZTTPR-ZT and ZTDSR-ZT. Retention of crop residue increased ( p  < 0.05) TOC (12%) and soil available nutrients mainly available-P (16%), followed by available-K (12%), DTPA-extractable Zn (11%), and available-S (6%) over residue removal treatment. The constructive changes in soil properties following conservation tillage and crop residue retention led to increased crop productivity over conventional CTTPR-CT. Therefore, conservation tillage (particularly ZTTPR-ZT and ZTDSR-ZT) and crop residue retention could be recommended in tropical rice-based cropping systems for improving soil quality and production sustainability.

A Humeomics sequential chemical fractionation coupled to advanced analytical identification was applied directly to soil for the first time. Humeomics extracted ~235% more soil organic carbon (SOC) than by the total alkaline extraction traditionally employed to solubilise soil humic molecules (soil Humeome). Seven fractions of either hydro- or organo-soluble components and a final unextractable humic residue were separated from soil. These materials enabled an unprecedented structural identification of solubilised heterogeneous humic molecules by combining NMR, GC-MS, and ESI-Orbitrap-MS. Identified molecules and their relative abundance were used to build up structure-based van Krevelen plots to show the specific contribution of each fraction to SOC. The stepwise isolation of mostly hydrophobic and unsaturated molecules of progressive structural complexity suggests that humic suprastructures in soil are arranged in multi-molecular layers. These comprised molecules either hydrophobically adsorbed on soil aluminosilicate surfaces in less stable fractions, or covalently bound in amorphous organo-iron complexes in more recalcitrant fractions. Moreover, most lipid molecules of the soil Humeome appeared to derive from plant polyesters rather than bacterial metabolism. Sodium ion batteries (SIBs) have been considered as a promising alternative to lithium ion batteries, owing to the abundant reserve and low-cost accessibility of the sodium source. To date, the pursuit of high-performance anode materials remains a great challenge for the SIBs. In this work, carbon-stabilized interlayer-expanded few-layer MoSe 2 nanosheets (MoSe 2 @C) have been fabricated by an oleic acid (OA) functionalized synthesis-polydopamine (PDA) stabilization-carbonization strategy, and their structural, morphological, and electrochemical properties have been carefully characterized and compared with the carbon-free MoSe 2 . When evaluated as anode for sodium ion half batteries, the MoSe 2 @C exhibits a remarkably enhanced rate capability of 367 mA h g -1 at 5 A g -1 , a high reversible discharge capacity of 445 mA h g -1 at 1 A g -1 , and a long-term cycling stability over 100 cycles. To further explore the potential applications, the MoSe 2 @C is assembled into sodium ion full batteries with Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (NVP) as cathode materials, showing an impressively high reversible capacity of 421 mA h g -1 at 0.2 A g -1 after 100 cycles. Such results are primarily attributed to the unique carbon-stabilized interlayer-expanded few-layer MoSe 2 nanosheets structure, which facilitates the permeation of electrolyte into the inner of MoSe 2 nanosheets, promoting charge transfer efficiency among MoSe 2 nanosheets, and accommodating the volume change from discharge-charge cycling.

Co-composting biowastes such as manures and biosolids can be used to stabilize carbon (C) without impacting the quality of these biowastes. This study investigated the effect of co-composting biowastes with alkaline materials on C stabilization and monitored the fertilization and revegetation values of these co-composts. The stabilization of C in biowastes (poultry manure and biosolids) was examined by their composting in the presence of various alkaline amendments (lime, fluidized bed boiler ash, flue gas desulphurization gypsum, and red mud) for 6 months in a controlled environment. The effects of co-composting on the biowastes' properties were assessed for different physical C fractions, microbial biomass C, priming effect, potentially mineralizable nitrogen, bioavailable phosphorus, and revegetation of an urban landfill soil. Co-composting biowastes with alkaline materials increased C stabilization, attributed to interaction with alkaline materials, thereby protecting it from microbial decomposition. The co-composted biowastes also increased the fertility of the landfill soil, thereby enhancing its revegetation potential. Stabilization of biowastes using alkaline materials through co-composting maintains their fertilization value in terms of improving plant growth. The co-composted biowastes also contribute to long-term soil C sequestration and reduction of bioavailability of heavy metals.
