China has experienced a boom expansion of non-grain production in recent years. While the non-grain production can increase the economic benefits of farmers, its expansion has significant impacts on the ecological environment and agricultural sustainability. This study attempted to assess the trade-offs between the economic benefits and environmental costs of non-grain production and to provide reference for future land use management. Focusing on the non-grain expansion in Tongxiang City, eastern China, empirical models and field surveys were used to evaluate its environmental impacts and monetary analysis was used to assess the trade-offs between the economic benefits and environmental costs. The results showed that the area of non-grain production increased by 2464.74 ha from 2005 to 2020, and pond fish farming accounted for the largest proportion. The economic benefits and environmental costs of non-grain production increased continuously during 2005-2020, and the net economic-environmental benefits gradually expanded after 2010. Trade-off analysis indicates that the economic benefits of duck rearing did not compensate for the environmental costs, while the other non-grain productions did. Nevertheless, the potential impact of non-grain conversion on the local environment is still underestimated. Some suggestions are proposed to achieve a win-win situation between cultivated land utilization and ecological protection., (© 2024. In order to achieve the coordinated development of ecological protection and cultivated land use, ecological security and cultivated land use functions (CLUFs) in the study area were evaluated by constructing a comprehensive evaluation index system. The leading CLUFs were measured, and it was determined to use the normalized revealed comparative advantage (NRCA) index. The spatial superposition analysis of the ecological security level and the leading CLUFs was carried out to obtain the zoning of the coordinated development of ecological security and cultivated land use, and differentiated utilization strategies were proposed for different zones. The results of this study showed the following: (1) The ecological security level of cultivated land in Yuanyang County can be divided into high, medium, and low security levels, accounting for 30.68%, 43.42%, and 25.9% of the total cultivated land area, respectively. The overall ecological security level is high. (2) The current cultivated land use mainly has a production function, accounting for 38.39% of the total cultivated land area, the leading CLUFs that are 34.16% of the cultivated land are the ecological function, and 27.45% of the cultivated land is the living function. (3) The spatial superposition analysis of the ecological security level and leading CLUFs yielded four zones of cultivated land use enhancement, including a production core zone, and different control strategies were proposed for the different zones. These strategies may help to fully realize the multifunctionality of the cultivated land without compromising ecological protection. Implementing differentiated protection for cultivated land in different use zones can achieve the coordinated development of ecological protection and cultivated land use, thus promoting the sustainable use of cultivated land resources.

The control of non-grain production (NGP) has become a great challenge for cultivated land protection in China in recent years. A control method for NGP that can coordinate the conflicts between cultivated land protection and farmers' interest is urgently needed. Taking Tongxiang City as an example, this research proposed a solution for the control and management of NGP based on cultivated land multifunctional assessment. The GIS and AHP approach were used to assess production function via a comprehensive evaluation index. The InVEST and FMSPA models were applied to assess ecological function while, the Maxent model was applied to assess recreational function, then multifunctional comprehensive zoning was conducted through natural breakpoint method and spatial overlay analysis. Five development-oriented function zones were considered, including the core area of grain production plus areas for ecological agriculture, leisure agriculture, compound agriculture, and general farmland. Differentiated control measures for NGPs in each functional subarea are proposed considering the current NGP distribution of Tongxiang city. This research can provide a reference for subsequent improvement of land management policies and can aid the achievement of sustainable agricultural development and rural revitalization.

Exploring the elements that affect farmers' willingness to protect cultivated land is the key to improving the ecological compensation mechanism for cultivated land protection. The purpose of this study was to analyze regional differences in ecological compensation for cultivated land protection, and to explore the influence of different external environments on farmers' willingness to engage in cultivated land protection. Based on the Profitable Spatial Boundary Analysis theory (PSBA), GIS spatial analysis technology was used to analyze regional space differences and assess ecological compensation for urban and rural cultivated land protection at the micro scale. The results show that the willingness of farmers to participate in cultivated land protection is affected by the external environment and the ecological compensation offered. The trend of the comprehensive benefit of cultivated land protection ecological compensation ( B ) is "Λ" from the first layer to the third layer. The B value of the urban-rural junction area is the highest value. This shows that the external environment is favorable for ecological compensation in this area, which has a positive effect on farmers' willingness to protect cultivated land. B < 0 in the first and third layer, which has a depressant effect on farmers' willingness to protect cultivated land. The study results contribute to the understanding of the impact of regional differences in the external environmental on ecological compensation and farmers' willingness to engage in cultivated land protection.
