Background: Approximately 3.9 million persons worldwide have young-onset dementia. Symptoms related to young-onset dementia present distinct challenges related to finances, employment, and family. To provide tailored support, it is important to gain knowledge about the formal support available for persons with young-onset dementia. Therefore, this paper aims to describe formal support for persons with young-onset dementia in Sweden and the factors influencing this support., Methods: This retrospective study used data on persons under 65 years of age (n = 284) from The Swedish Registry for Cognitive/Dementia Disorders (SveDem) between 2021 and 2022. SveDem was established to monitor the quality of dementia care in Sweden. Characteristics of participants were obtained, including age, sex, dementia diagnosis, MMSE, medications, accommodation, and care setting. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression were used to test for associations between participant characteristics and post-diagnostic support., Results: Information and educational support were usually offered to the person with young-onset dementia (90.1%) and their family (78.9%). Approximately half of the sample were offered contact with a dementia nurse (49.3%), counsellor (51.4%), or needs assessor (47.9%). A minority (28.5%) were offered cognitive aids. Six regression models were conducted based on participant characteristics to predict the likelihood that persons were offered support. Support was not predicted by age, sex, children at home, accommodation, or medications. Lower MMSE scores (p < .05) and home help (p < .05) were significantly associated with offer of a needs assessor. Living together was a significant predictor (p < .01) for information and educational support offered to the family. Care setting significantly predicted (p < .01) an offer of information and educational support for the person and family members, as well as contact with a counsellor., Conclusion: This study indicates potential formal support shortages for persons with young-onset dementia in some areas of dementia care. Despite equal support across most characteristics, disparities based on care setting highlight the importance of specialised dementia care. Pre-diagnostic support is minimal, indicating challenges for persons with young-onset dementia to access these services before diagnosis. Background and Objectives: Although East Asian American family caregivers are known to underutilize formal support services, there is a lack of evidence regarding the associations of formal service utilization with caregivers' well-being. This study examined the prevalence of different types of home-and community-based formal service utilization among Korean and Chinese American family caregivers of persons with dementia and how utilization of such services was associated with their well-being. We also explored their overall experience in accessing and utilizing formal dementia support services and programs., Research Design and Methods: We employed a convergent mixed-methods study design. In a convenience sampling method, we recruited 62 family caregivers. Logistic regression and thematic analysis were utilized to analyze data., Results: The results showed in-home services were mostly utilized among family caregivers of these ethnic groups. Out of 9 different support services, those who utilized nutrition programs and case management were more likely to report higher overall well-being. Four themes were developed: (1) awareness of formal support services but uncertainty on how to access them, (2) language barriers imposing additional challenges in accessing formal support services, (3) traveling to access culturally appropriate services, and (4) desire for culturally tailored medical and long-term care services., Discussion and Implications: Findings from this study suggest the importance of case management services to overcome barriers to accessing and utilizing a wide range of formal support services and provision of culturally appropriate food in formal support services to increase East Asian American family caregivers' utilization of long-term care services., (© The Author(s) 2023. Behaviour changes (BCs) are common in young-onset dementia (YOD). Access to knowledgeable and age-appropriate support services is needed to assist with the appropriate management of BCs. We sought to investigate the types of YOD-related BCs that most commonly require support, the formal services being accessed for support, and the experiences of those seeking support in Australia. We employed a cross-sectional online questionnaire for individuals living with YOD as well as individuals providing informal or formal care for someone with YOD. Thirty-six questionnaire responses were recorded. Of the total sample, 83% reported YOD-related BCs requiring support, the most common being appetite/eating changes, followed by agitation/aggression and apathy/indifference. Seventy-six percent of these individuals had attempted to seek support from a formal service, with Dementia Australia, Dementia Support Australia, and general practitioners most commonly approached. Responses suggested that the support access pathway is suboptimal, with a lack of clarity about what services to approach for support and long wait times. Furthermore, 28% of participants had not gained access to support utilizing non-pharmacological strategies. Individuals who need support for YOD-related BCs demonstrated a high rate of help-seeking from formal support services; however, the support access pathway is slow, is difficult to navigate, and does not result in the best-practice management of BCs. Formal services resourced to provide efficient support with the implementation of behavioural strategies are needed, along with clear, accessible guidelines on the pathway to access them.

Background: As part of efforts to prevent violence against women, several countries have institutionalized formal support services including legislations to prevent, protect victims, and deter perpetrators of domestic violence (DV). Prior research on formal support service utilization shows that DV survivors do not get the necessary services they deserve. However, much remains to be known about the experiences of women survivors of DV who accessed a range of formal support services and how their experiences (dis)empowered them. Here, we assessed the experiences of Ghanaian women survivors of DV with formal support services vis-à-vis the provisions of the Ghana DV Act and insights of subject experts., Methods: From May to August 2018, we recruited a total of 28 participants: 21 women survivors of DV in Weija-Gbawe Municipality of Ghana, and 7 experts from the police, human rights, and health professions. We used two sets of in-depth interview guides: one to collect data on survivors' experiences, and the second for the insights of experts. We performed summary descriptive statistics on survivors' sociodemographic characteristics and used thematic analysis to assess their experiences of DV; and access to, patronage, and response of formal support services., Results: Of 21 DV survivors, 19 (90.1%) were aware of the existence of the DV law, however none was well informed of their entitlements. DV survivors have low formal education and are not economically empowered. Some DV survivors are revictimized in the process of accessing formal services. DV survivors expect the government to provide them with shelter, upkeep, medical, and legal aid. All the 21 survivors had at least one contact with a women's rights organization and were knowledgeable of their supporting services namely legal services, temporary shelter, and psychosocial support., Conclusions: The experiences of DV survivors do not reflect the legal provisions of Ghana's DV Act. Government under funding of formal services and negative gender norms are disempowering to survivors. NGOs are popular among women survivors of DV in Ghana for the education, legal, and material support they provide. Background: Little is known about the prognostic differences between older emergency department (ED) patients who present with different formal support requirements in the community. We set out to describe and compare the patient profiles and patterns of health service use among three older ED cohorts: home care clients, nursing home residents and those receiving no formal support., Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis of the Canadian cohort from the interRAI multinational ED study. Data were collected using interRAI ED contact assessment on patients 75 years of age and older (n = 2,274), in eight ED sites across Canada. A series of descriptive statistics were reported. Adjusted associations were determined using logistic regression., Results: Older adults receiving no formal support services were most stable. However, they were most likely to be hospitalized. Older home care clients were most likely to report depressive symptoms and distressed caregivers. They also had the greatest odds of frequent ED visitation post-discharge (OR=1.9; 95% CI=1.39-2.59). Older adults transferred from a nursing home were the frailest but had the lowest odds of hospital admission (OR=0.14; 95% CI=0.09-0.23)., Conclusion: We demonstrated the importance of inquiring about community-based formal support services and provide data to support decision-making in the ED., Competing Interests: CONFLICT OF INTEREST DISCLOSURES The authors declare that no conflicts of interest exist., (© 2020 Author(s).
