Actinidia arguta ( A. arguta , kiwiberry) is a perennial deciduous vine with a strong overwintering ability. We hypothesized that trehalose metabolism, which plays a pivotal role in the stress tolerance of plants, may be involved in the cold acclimatization of A. arguta . Transcriptome analysis showed that the expression of AaTPPA , which encodes a trehalose-6-phosphate phosphatase (TPP), was upregulated in response to low temperatures. AaTPPA expression levels were much higher in lateral buds, roots, and stem cambia than in leaves in autumn. In AaTPPA -overexpressing (OE) Arabidopsis thaliana ( A. thaliana ), trehalose levels were 8-11 times higher than that of the wild type (WT) and showed different phenotypic characteristics from WT and OtsB ( Escherichia coli TPP ) overexpressing lines. AaTPPA -OE A. thaliana exhibited significantly higher freezing tolerance than WT and OtsB -OE lines. Transient overexpression of AaTPPA in A. arguta leaves increased the scavenging ability of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the soluble sugar and proline contents. AaERF64 , an ethylene-responsive transcription factor, was induced by ethylene treatment and bound to the GCC-box of the AaTPPA promoter to activate its expression. AaTPPA expression was also induced by abscisic acid. Sedimentary records of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and phthalates could reflect energy consumption and industrial production adjustment. However, there is limited knowledge about their effects on variations of PAH and phthalate compositions in the sediment core. The PAH and phthalate sedimentary records in Huguangyan Maar Lake in Guangdong, China were constructed, and random forest models were adopted to quantify the associated impact factors. Sums of sixteen PAH (∑ 16 PAH) and seven phthalate (∑ 7 PAE) concentrations in the sediment ranged from 28.8 to 1110 and 246-4290 μg/kg dry weight in 1900-2020. Proportions of 5-6 ring PAHs to the ∑ 16 PAHs increased from 32.0 %-40.7 % in 1900-2020 with increased coal and petroleum consumption, especially after 1980. However, those of 2-3 ring PAHs decreased from 30.7 % to 23.6 % due to the biomass substitution with natural gas. The proportions of bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate to the ∑ 7 PAEs decreased from 52.3 %-29.1 % in 1900-2020, while those of di-isobutyl phthalate increased (13.7 % to 42.3 %). The shift from traditional plasticizers to non-phthalates drove this transformation, though the primary plastic production is increasing. Objectives: The launch of state certification for community health workers (CHWs) in Massachusetts in 2018 aimed to promote and champion this critical workforce. However, concerns exist about unintentional adverse effects of certification. Given this, we conducted 2 cross-sectional surveys to evaluate this certification policy., Methods: We conducted surveys of CHW employers and CHWs in 3 sample frames: community health centers and federally qualified health centers, acute-care hospitals, and community-based organizations. We administered the surveys in 2016 (before certification launch) and 2021 (after certification launch) to answer the following questions: Was certification associated with positive outcomes among CHWs after its launch? Did harmful shifts occur among the CHW workforce and employers after certification launch? Was certification associated with disparities among CHWs after its launch?, Results: Certification was associated with higher pay among certified (vs noncertified) CHWs, better perceptions of CHWs among certified (vs noncertified) CHWs, and better integration of certified (vs noncertified) CHWs into care teams. We found no adverse shifts in CHW workforce by sociodemographic variables or in CHW employer characteristics (most notably CHW employer hiring requirements) after certification launch. After certification launch, certified and uncertified CHWs had similar demographic and educational characteristics. However, certified CHWs more often worked in large, clinical organizations while uncertified CHWs most often worked in medium-sized community-based organizations., Conclusions: Our evaluation of Massachusetts CHW certification suggests that CHW certification was not associated with workforce disparities and was associated with positive outcomes. Plant senescence is a highly regulated developmental program crucial for nutrient reallocation and stress adaptation in response to developmental and environmental cues. Stress-induced and age-dependent natural senescence share both overlapping and distinct molecular responses and regulatory schemes. Previously, we have utilized a carbon-deprivation (C-deprivation) senescence assay using Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) seedlings to investigate senescence regulation. Here we conducted a comprehensive time-resolved transcriptomic analysis of Arabidopsis wild type seedlings subjected to C-deprivation treatment at multiple time points, unveiling substantial temporal changes and distinct gene expression patterns. Moreover, we identified ALTERED MERISTEM PROGRAM 1 (AMP1), encoding an endoplasmic reticulum protein, as a potential regulator of senescence based on its expression profile. By characterizing loss-of-function alleles and overexpression lines of AMP1, we confirmed its role as a negative regulator of plant senescence. Genetic analyses further revealed a synergistic interaction between AMP1 and the autophagy pathway in regulating senescence. Additionally, we discovered a functional association between AMP1 and the endosome-localized ABNORMAL SHOOT3 (ABS3)-mediated senescence pathway and positioned key senescence-promoting transcription factors downstream of AMP1. Abiotic stresses including cold, drought, salt, and iron deficiency severely impair plant development, crop productivity, and geographic distribution. Several bodies of research have shed light on the pleiotropic functions of BASIC HELIX-LOOP-HELIX (bHLH) proteins in plant responses to these abiotic stresses. In this review, we mention the regulatory roles of bHLH TFs in response to stresses such as cold, drought, salt resistance, and iron deficiency, as well as in enhancing grain yield in plants, especially crops. The bHLH proteins bind to E/G-box motifs in the target promoter and interact with various other factors to form a complex regulatory network. Through this network, they cooperatively activate or repress the transcription of downstream genes, thereby regulating various stress responses. Finally, we present some perspectives for future research focusing on the molecular mechanisms that integrate and coordinate these abiotic stresses. Understanding these molecular mechanisms is crucial for the development of stress-tolerant crops.

The increase in atmospheric CO 2 concentration is a significant factor in triggering global warming. CO 2 is essential for plant photosynthesis, but excessive CO 2 can negatively impact photosynthesis and its associated physiological and biochemical processes. The tetraploid Robinia pseudoacacia L., a superior and improved variety, exhibits high tolerance to abiotic stress. In this study, we investigated the physiological and proteomic response mechanisms of the tetraploid R. pseudoacacia under high CO 2 treatment. The results of our physiological and biochemical analyses revealed that a 5% high concentration of CO 2 hindered the growth and development of the tetraploid R. pseudoacacia and caused severe damage to the leaves. Additionally, it significantly reduced photosynthetic parameters such as P n, G s, T r, and C i, as well as respiration. The levels of chlorophyll (Chl a and b) and the fluorescent parameters of chlorophyll ( Fm , Fv / Fm , q P, and ETR ) also significantly decreased. Conversely, the levels of ROS (H 2 O 2 and O 2 ·- ) were significantly increased, while the activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, GR, and APX) were significantly decreased. Furthermore, high CO 2 induced stomatal closure by promoting the accumulation of ROS and NO in guard cells. Through a proteomic analysis, we identified a total of 1652 DAPs after high CO 2 treatment. GO functional annotation revealed that these DAPs were mainly associated with redox activity, catalytic activity, and ion binding. KEGG analysis showed an enrichment of DAPs in metabolic pathways, secondary metabolite biosynthesis, amino acid biosynthesis, and photosynthetic pathways. Overall, our study provides valuable insights into the adaptation mechanisms of the tetraploid R. pseudoacacia to high CO 2 .

The global occurrences of lake eutrophication have led to algal bloom and the subsequent algal decomposition, releasing high amounts of algae-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) into the lake water. Algae-derived DOM could regulate the quantity and composition of DOM in lake water and further impact the biogeochemical cycles of multiple elements. In this study, the dynamic changes in the quantity and quality of DOM during algal decomposition under different eutrophic scenarios (e.g., from oligotrophication to severe eutrophication) were monitored, and the corresponding environmental effects (e.g., microbial responses and greenhouse gas emissions) caused by algal decomposition were further explored. The results showed that algal decomposition significantly increased the DOM levels, bioavailability, and intensities of fluorescent components in the water. The total DOM levels gradually decreased, whereas the average molecular weight increased along the decomposition process. Furthermore, unsaturated hydrocarbon and aliphatic compounds were preferentially utilized by microorganisms during algal decomposition, and some refractory molecules (e.g., lignin, condensed hydrocarbons, and tannin with high O/C values) were synchronously generated, as evidenced by the results from ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry. The dominant bacterial species during algal decomposition shifted from Proteobacteria (46%) to Bacteroidetes (42%). In addition, algae addition resulted in 1.2-5 times the emissions of CO 2 and CH 4 from water, and the emission rates could be well predicted by the optical index of a 254 in water. This study provides comprehensive perspectives for understanding the environmental behaviors of aquatic DOM and further paves the ways for the mitigation of lake eutrophication.

In situ measurement of multiple pollutants coexisting in sediment porewater is an essential step in comprehensively assessing the bioavailability and risk of pollutants, but to date, this needs to be better developed. In this study, a passive sampler, consisting of an "I-shaped" supporting frame and inorganic/organic sampling units, incorporating equilibrium dialysis theory and kinetic/equilibrium sorption principle, was developed for the synchronous measurement of inorganic (e.g., phosphorus and metal(loid)s) and organic pollutants (e.g., parent and substituted PAHs). The equilibrium time and sampling rates were explored in laboratory tests to support in situ application. Profiles of pollutants in porewater within a vertical resolution of centimeters, i.e., 1 cm and 2 cm for inorganic and organic pollutants, respectively, were obtained by field deployment of the sampler for further estimation of diffusive fluxes across the sediment-water interface. The results suggested that the role of sediments for a specific pollutant may change (e.g., from "sink" to "source") during the sampling time. This study demonstrated the feasibility of synchronous measurement of inorganic and organic pollutants in sediment porewater by the passive sampler. Algal organic matter (AOM) is a major component of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in eutrophic lakes and could impact the photodegradation of neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) in water. Predicting these effects, however, is challenging, largely due to the dynamic changes of AOM during algal decomposition. Here, we investigated the effects of AOM on MeHg photodegradation throughout the algal decomposition process and elucidated these effects by characterizing dynamic changes of AOM and exploring the respective roles of various reactive oxygen species (ROS). Our results reveal that AOM derived from algal decomposition significantly inhibits MeHg photodegradation, and the extent of this inhibition varies depending on the specific lakes (8-21 %, p < 0.05) and their eutrophication states (16-28 %, p < 0.05). The inhibitory effect gradually weakened as the decomposition progressed, which may be attributed to the dynamic changes in the quantity and quality of AOM. Moreover, hydroxyl radical (·OH) was found to be the main contributor in driving MeHg photodegradation (15-23 %) during the early stages of decomposition (day 0-3), while in the later stage (day 12-24), the role of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 , 15-20 %) and ( 3 DOM*, 21-30 %) gradually strengthened and these three ROS jointly drove MeHg photodegradation. Based on our findings and recent studies, we propose that AOM derived from algal decomposition plays a vital role in increasing the risk of MeHg in eutrophic lakes. It promotes MeHg formation while simultaneously inhibiting its photodegradation. Bleeding is as particularly a serious phenomenon in Actinidia arguta and has important effects on this plant's growth and development. Here we used A. arguta to study the effects of bleeding on the growth and development of leaves and fruits after a bleeding episode. We detect and analyze physiological indices of leaves and fruit after bleeding. The result revealed that the relative electrical conductivity and malondialdehyde (MDA) of leaves increased in treatment. Nitro blue tetrazolium chloride (NBT) and 3,3-diaminobenzidine (DAB) staining revealed the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in leaves after bleeding. The chlorophyll content and photosynthetic parameter of plants were also decreased. In fruits, pulp and seed water content decreased after the damage, as did fruit vitamin C (Vc), soluble sugar content, and soluble solids content (SSC); the titratable acid content did not change significantly. We therefore conclude that bleeding affects the physiological indices of A. arguta. Our study provides a theoretical basis for understanding the physiological changes of A. arguta after bleeding episodes and laying a timely foundation for advancing research on A. arguta bleeding and long-term field studies should be executed in order to gain insights into underlying mechanisms., (© 2023. Senescence is the final stage of plant growth and development, and is a highly regulated process at the molecular, cellular, and organismal levels. When triggered by age, hormonal, or environmental cues, plants actively adjust their metabolism and gene expression to execute the progression of senescence. Regulation of senescence is vital for the reallocation of nutrients to sink organs, to ensure reproductive success and adaptations to stresses. Identification and characterization of hallmarks of leaf senescence are of great importance for understanding the molecular regulatory mechanisms of plant senescence, and breeding future crops with more desirable senescence traits. Tremendous progress has been made in elucidating the genetic network underpinning the metabolic and cellular changes in leaf senescence. Wetlands are considered the hotspots for mercury (Hg) biogeochemistry, garnering global attention. Therefore, it is important to review the research progress in this field and predict future frontiers. To achieve that, we conducted a literature analysis by collecting 15,813 publications about Hg in wetlands from the Web of Science Core Collection. The focus of wetland Hg research has changed dramatically over time: 1) In the initial stage (i.e., 1959-1990), research mainly focused on investigating the sources and contents of Hg in wetland environments and fish. 2) For the next 20 years (i.e., 1991-2010), Hg transformation (e.g., Hg reduction and methylation) and environmental factors that affect Hg bioaccumulation have attracted extensive attention. 3) In the recent years of 2011-2022, hot topics in Hg study include microbial Hg methylators, Hg bioavailability, methylmercury (MeHg) demethylation, Hg stable isotope, and Hg cycling in paddy fields. Finally, we put forward future research priorities, i.e., 1) clarifying the primary factors controlling MeHg production, 2) uncovering the MeHg demethylation process, 3) elucidating MeHg bioaccumulation process to better predict its risk, and 4) recognizing the role of wetlands in Hg circulation. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is an essential component of environmental systems. It usually originates from two end-members, including allochthonous and autochthonous sources. Previously, links have been established between DOM origins/sources and its biogeochemical reactivities. However, the influence of changes in DOM characteristics driven by end-member mixing on DOM biogeochemical reactivities has not been clarified. In this study, we investigated variations of DOM reactivities responding to the dynamics of DOM characteristics induced by different mixing ratios of two DOM end-members derived from humic acid (HA) and algae, respectively. Four biogeochemical reactivities of DOM were evaluated, including biodegradation, ·OH production, photodegradation, and redox capacity. Results showed that the variations of DOM characteristics due to the two end-members mixing significantly impact its biogeochemical reactivities. However, not all spectral parameters and reactivities followed the conservative mixing behavior. In contrast to reactivities of ·OH production and redox capacity, mixed samples showed apparent deviations from conservative linear relationships in biodegradation and photodegradation due to the interaction between the two end-members. Regarding the role of DOM properties influencing reactivity changes, peak A and M were recognized as the most stable parameters. However, peak C and SUVA 254 were identified as the most vital contributors for explaining DOM reactivity variations. These findings suggest that a general model for describing the dynamic relationship between DOM source and reactivity cannot be proposed. Thus, the dynamics of DOM reactivity in diverse ecosystems cannot be estimated simply by the "plus or minus" of the reactivity from individual end-member. The effect of end-member mixing should be evaluated in a given reactivity instead of generalization. This study provides important insights for further understanding the dynamics of DOM's environmental role in different ecosystems influenced by variations of source inputs. Background: Professional certification of community health workers (CHWs) is a debated topic. Although intended to promote CHWs, certification may have unintended impacts given the grassroots nature of the workforce. As such, both intended effects and unintended adverse effects should be carefully evaluated. However, there is a lack of published literature describing such effective evaluations with a robust methodology. In this methods paper, we describe a key component of evaluating CHW certification in Massachusetts-the Massachusetts CHW Workforce Survey., Methods: Design of the surveys was informed by a program theory framework that delineated both positive and negative potential impacts of Massachusetts CHW certification on CHWs and CHW employers. Using this framework, we developed measures of interest and preliminary CHW and CHW employer surveys. To validate and refine the surveys, we conducted cognitive interviews with CHWs and CHW employers. We then finalized survey tools with input from state and national stakeholders, CHWs, and CHW employers. Our sample consisted of three frames based on where CHWs are most likely to be employed in Massachusetts: acute care hospitals, community-based organizations, and ambulatory care health centers, primarily community health centers and federally qualified health centers. We then undertook extensive outreach efforts to determine whether each organization employed CHWs and to obtain CHW and CHW employer contact information. Our statistical analysis of the data utilized inverse probability score weighting accounting for organizational, site, and individual response., Anticipated Results: Wave one of the survey was administered in 2016 prior to launch of Massachusetts CHW certification and wave two in 2021. We report descriptive statistics of the three sample frames and response rates of each survey for each wave. Further, we describe select anticipated results related to certification, including outcomes of the program theory framework., Conclusions: The Massachusetts CHW Workforce Survey is the culmination of 5 years of effort to evaluate the impact of CHW certification in Massachusetts. Mercury sulfides (HgS), one of the largest Hg sinks in the lithosphere, has long been considered to be highly inert. Recently, several HgS speciation (e.g., nano- or micro-sized HgS particles) in paddy soils have been found to be reactive and bioavailable, increasing the possibility of methylation and bioaccumulation and posing a potential risk to humans. However, a simple and uniform method for investigating HgS bioavailability is still lacking. To address this issue, we extracted dissolved Hg from HgS particles by sodium thiosulfate (Na 2 S 2 O 3 ) in paddy soils and analyzed the correlation between extracted Hg and soil methylmercury (MeHg). Results showed that the amounts of Hg extracted by Na 2 S 2 O 3 had a strong positive correlation with the levels of soil MeHg (R 2 adj  = 0.893, p < 0.05). It is suggested that Na 2 S 2 O 3 extraction may be a good method of predicting Hg bioavailability in paddy soils. One of the hallmarks of plant senescence is the global transcriptional reprogramming coordinated by a plethora of transcription factors (TFs). However, mechanisms underlying the interactions between different TFs in modulating senescence remain obscure. Previously, we discovered that plant ABS3 subfamily MATE transporter genes regulate senescence and senescence-associated transcriptional changes. In a genetic screen for mutants suppressing the accelerated senescence phenotype of the gain-of-function mutant abs3-1D, AUXIN RESPONSE FACTOR 2 (ARF2) and PHYTOCHROME-INTERACTING FACTOR 5 (PIF5) were identified as key TFs responsible for transcriptional regulation in the ABS3-mediated senescence pathway. ARF2 and PIF5 (as well as PIF4) interact directly and function interdependently to promote senescence, and they share common target genes such as key senescence promoting genes ORESARA 1 (ORE1) and STAY-GREEN 1 (SGR1) in the ABS3-mediated senescence pathway. In addition, we discovered reciprocal regulation between ABS3-subfamily MATEs and the ARF2 and PIF5/4 TFs. Methylmercury (MeHg) production in paddy soils and its accumulation in rice raise global concerns since rice consumption has been identified as an important pathway of human exposure to MeHg. Sulfur (S) amendment via fertilization has been reported to facilitate Hg methylation in paddy soils under anaerobic conditions, while the dynamic of S-amendment induced MeHg production in soils with increasing redox potential remains unclear. This critical gap hinders a comprehensive understanding of Hg biogeochemistry in rice paddy system which is characterized by the fluctuation of redox potential. Here, we conducted soil incubation experiments to explore MeHg production in slow-oxidizing paddy soils amended with different species of S and doses of sulfate. Results show that the elevated redox potential (1) increased MeHg concentrations by 10.9%-35.2%, which were mainly attributed to the re-oxidation of other S species to sulfate and thus the elevated abundance of sulfate-reducing bacteria, and (2) increased MeHg phytoavailability by up to 75% due to the reductions in acid volatile sulfide (AVS) that strongly binds MeHg in soils. Mercury (Hg) could be microbially methylated to the bioaccumulative neurotoxin methylmercury (MeHg), raising health concerns. Understanding the methylation of various Hg species is thus critical in predicting the MeHg risk. Among the known Hg species, mercury sulfide (HgS) is the largest Hg reservoir in the lithosphere and has long been considered to be highly inert. However, with advances in the analytical methods of nanoparticles, HgS nanoparticles (HgS NPs) have recently been detected in various environmental matrices or organisms. Furthermore, pioneering laboratory studies have reported the high bioavailability of HgS NPs. The formation, presence, and transformation (e.g., methylation) of HgS NPs are intricately related to several environmental factors, especially dissolved organic matter (DOM). The complexity of the behavior of HgS NPs and the heterogeneity of DOM prevent us from comprehensively understanding and predicting the risk of HgS NPs. To reveal the role of HgS NPs in Hg biogeochemical cycling, research needs should focus on the following aspects: the formation pathways, the presence, and the environmental behaviors of HgS NPs impacted by the dominant influential factor of DOM. We thus summarized the latest progress in these aspects and proposed future research priorities, e.g., developing the detection techniques of HgS NPs and probing HgS NPs in various matrices, further exploring the interactions between DOM and HgS NPs. Besides, as most of the previous studies were conducted in laboratories, our current knowledge should be further refreshed through field observations, which would help to gain better insights into predicting the Hg risks in natural environment., (Copyright © 2022. The MAP215 family of microtubule (MT) polymerase/nucleation factors and the MT severing enzyme katanin are widely conserved MT-associated proteins (MAPs) across the plant and animal kingdoms. However, how these two essential MAPs coordinate to regulate plant MT dynamics and development remains unknown. Here, we identified novel hypomorphic alleles of MICROTUBULE ORGANIZATION 1 (MOR1), encoding the Arabidopsis thaliana homolog of MAP215, in genetic screens for mutants oversensitive to the MT-destabilizing drug propyzamide. Live imaging in planta revealed that MOR1-green fluorescent protein predominantly tracks the plus-ends of cortical MTs (cMTs) in interphase cells and labels preprophase band, spindle and phragmoplast MT arrays in dividing cells. Remarkably, MOR1 and KATANIN 1 (KTN1), the p60 subunit of Arabidopsis katanin, act synergistically to control the proper formation of plant-specific MT arrays, and consequently, cell division and anisotropic cell expansion. Moreover, MOR1 physically interacts with KTN1 and promotes KTN1-mediated severing of cMTs. Mangrove ecosystems serve as an important carbon sink but also could be a hotspot that produces neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg). Although many studies have focused on mercury (Hg) contamination in this carbon-rich ecosystem, our understanding of the effects and mechanisms of the organic matter (OM) regulation of MeHg production in mangrove sediments is still limited. Here, we examined the effects of Hg contamination and OM enrichment on MeHg production in anoxic mangrove sediments and identified the major microbial guilds attending this process. The mangrove sediments possessed a high potential for producing MeHg, but this was counterbalanced by its rapid degradation. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) such as Desulfobacterales, Desulfovibrionales, and Syntrophobacterales were the major methylators. OM diagenesis significantly changed the biogeochemical conditions, accelerating MeHg degradation in the sediments. The enhanced MeHg degradation could be attributed to the abundant sulfide produced during OM decomposition, which could potentially inhibit the Hg methylation by immobilization of inorganic Hg, abiotically degrade MeHg, and favor the non-mer-mediated degradation of MeHg by SRB. As the biggest inter-basin water transfer scheme in the world, the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWD) was designed to alleviate the water crisis in North China. The main channel of the middle route of the SNWD is of great concern in terms of the drinking water quality. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that the dissolved organic matter (DOM) derived from the planktonic algae causes the rising levels of COD Mn along the middle route by monitoring data on water quality (2015-2019, monthly resolution). The results showed that algal density in the main channel increased along the channel and was significantly correlated with COD Mn (p < 0.01). Five fluorescent components of DOM, including tyrosine-like (14.85%), tryptophan-like (22.48%), microbial byproduct-like (26.34%), fulvic acid-like (11.41%), and humic acid-like (24.92%) components, were detected. The level of tyrosine-like components increased along the channel and was significantly correlated with algal density (p<0.01), indicating that algae significantly changed the level of DOM in the channel. Algal decomposition and metabolism were found to be the main mechanisms that drive the changes in COD Mn . Reducing health risk of mercury (Hg)/methylmercury (MeHg) in sewage sludge is vital to its land application. This study revealed that thermal hydrolysis reduced MeHg content both during pretreatment process and subsequent anaerobic digestion (AD), which resulted in decrease of MeHg content from 4.24 ng/g to 0.95 ng/g after thermal hydrolysis (150 ℃) and further decreased to 0.39 ng/g after AD. Notably, thermal hydrolysis at high temperature (120 ℃ and 150 ℃) promoted both Hg methylation and MeHg demethylation rather than the control or at low temperature (100 ℃). Hg methylation dominated in hydrolysis and acidogenesis stage, whereas MeHg demethylation dominated in methanogenesis stage. Though abundance of related genes (HgcA and merA) was dramatically reduced, Ruminococcaceae, Peptococcaceae, and Lachnospiraceae were potentially Hg methylators in hydrolysis and acidogenesis stage. The Yangtze River exhibits a high biodiversity and plays an important role in global biodiversity conservation. As the world's busiest inland river in regard to shipping, little attention has been paid to underwater noise pollution. In 2017, the underwater noise level in 25 riverside locations along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River mainly at night time were investigated by using passive acoustic monitoring method. Approximately 88% and 40% of the sampled sites exhibit noise levels exceeding the underwater acoustic thresholds of causing responsiveness and temporary threshold shift, respectively, in cetacean. Noise pollution may impose a high impact on fish with physostomous swim bladders and Weberian ossicles, such as silver carp, bighead carp, goldfish and common carp, whereas it may affect fish with physoclistous swim bladders and without Weberian ossicles, such as lake sturgeon and paddlefish, to a lesser extent. Noise levels reductions of approximately 10 and 20 dB were observed in the middle and lower reaches, respectively, of the Yangtze River over the 2012 level. The green development mode of the ongoing construction of green shipping in the Yangtze River Economic Belt, including the development of green shipping lanes, ports, ships and transportation organizations, may account for the alleviated underwater noise pollution. Follow-up noise mitigation endeavors, such as the extension of ship speed restrictions and the study and implementation of the optimal navigation speed in ecologically important areas, are required to further reduce the noise level in the Yangtze River to protect local porpoises and fish., (Copyright © 2021 The Authors. There are global concerns about dietary exposure to metal(loid)s in foods. However, little is known about the relative contribution of rice versus fish to multiple metal(loid) exposure for the general population, especially in Asia where rice and fish are major food sources. We compared relative contributions of rice and fish consumption to multi-metal(loid) exposure on the city-scale (Nanjing) and province-scale in China. The effects of ingestion rate, metal(loid) level, and bioaccessibility were examined to calculate modeled risk from Cu, Zn, total As (TAs), inorganic As (iAs), Se, Cd, Pb, and methylmercury (MeHg). Metal(loid) levels in rice and fish samples collected from Nanjing City were generally low, except iAs. Metal(loid) bioaccessibilities in fish were higher than those in rice, except Se. Calculated carcinogenic risks induced by iAs intake (indicated by increased lifetime cancer risk, ILCR) were above the acceptable level (1 0  -4 ) in Nanjing City (median: 3 × 10 -4 for female and 4 × 10 -4 for male) and nine provinces (1.4 × 10 -4 to 5.9 × 10 -4 ) in China. Rice consumption accounted for 85.0% to 99.8% of carcinogenic risk. The non-carcinogenic hazard quotients (HQ) for single metals and hazard index (HI) for multi-metal exposure were < 1 in all cases, indicating of their slight non-carcinogen health effects associated. In Guangdong and Jiangsu provinces, results showed that rice and fish intake contributed similarly to the HI (i.e., 42.6% vs 57.4% in Guangdong and 54.6% vs 45.4% in Jiangsu). Sensitivity analysis indicated that carcinogenic risk was most sensitive to rice ingestion rate and rice iAs levels, while non-carcinogenic hazard (i.e., HQ and HI) was most sensitive to ingestion rate of fish and rice, and Cu concentration in rice. Research on mercury (Hg), a naturally occurring element in Earth's lithosphere, has been extremely hot in the past few decades due to the outbreak of a series of disastrous poisoning incidents. However, such studies might provide us a biased view towards Hg if no thorough review about its long-term effects on living organisms from a multi-timescale perspective was performed. Hg might have played a mysterious role in critical intervals (e.g., mass extinction and oceanic anoxia events) in several geologic periods due to the elevated Hg levels induced by volcanism whereas it has long been used for various purposes in human history. Therefore, it is necessary to go through previous studies and historical records of different timescales (10 0 to 10 6 yr). In this work, we conducted a thorough review of Hg knowledge at three different timescales, i.e., geologic periods (10 6 yr), human history (10 3 yr), and contemporary history (10 0 yr), summarizing recent advances and indicated potential research gaps. By doing so, we demonstrated that it is possible to achieve safe and sustainable Hg applications despite the current Hg crisis. However, such silver linings depend on a better understanding of ecosystem dynamics. Besides, considering the possible dire consequences of erupted Hg levels as suggested in geological periods, swift actions to mitigate the impacts of anthropogenic activities on the Hg cycle will be another key point. Algal blooms bring massive amounts of algal organic matter (AOM) into eutrophic lakes, which influences microbial methylmercury (MeHg) production. However, because of the complexity of AOM and its dynamic changes during algal decomposition, the relationship between AOM and microbial Hg methylators remains poorly understood, which hinders predicting MeHg production and its bioaccumulation in eutrophic shallow lakes. To address that, we explored the impacts of AOM on microbial Hg methylators and MeHg production by characterizing dissolved organic matter with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS) and three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy and quantifying the microbial Hg methylation gene hgcA . We first reveal that the predominance of methanogens, facilitated by eutrophication-induced carbon input, could drive MeHg production in lake water. Specifically, bioavailable components of AOM ( i.e. , CHONs such as aromatic proteins and soluble microbial byproduct-like materials) increased the abundances (Archaea- hgcA gene: 438-2240% higher) and activities (net CH 4 production: 16.0-44.4% higher) of Archaea ( e.g. , methanogens). These in turn led to enhanced dissolved MeHg levels (24.3-15,918% higher) for three major eutrophic shallow lakes in China. Nevertheless, our model results indicate that AOM-facilitated MeHg production could be offset by AOM-induced MeHg biodilution under eutrophication. Our study would help reduce uncertainties in predicting MeHg production, providing a basis for mitigating the MeHg risk in eutrophic lakes.

Sulfur could be introduced into paddy soils via dry or wet deposition, irrigation, and fertilization, which subsequently impacts the production of methylmercury (MeHg), a bioaccumulative neurotoxicant. However, effects of sulfur input on MeHg production are variable, possibly due to the multiple effects of sulfur on Hg mobility and/or microbial Hg methylators, leading to uncertainties in predicting MeHg risk. To address that, we explored the effects of different types and amounts of sulfur as well as concentrations of ambient sulfate on Hg methylation in paddy soils, and elucidated the mechanisms by quantifying changes in (1) Hg mobility and (2) microbial Hg methylators (e.g., sulfate-reducing bacteria, SRB). Our results indicated that MeHg levels increased by 40-86% and 30-96% in soils under various types (i.e., 200 mg kg -1 elemental sulfur, ammonium sulfate, sulfur-coated urea and potassium sulfate (K 2 SO 4 )) and different amounts (i.e., 100, 200 and 400 mg kg -1 K 2 SO 4 ) of sulfur input. The enhanced MeHg production could be explained by increased Hg mobility but not changes in microbial Hg methylators. Besides, sulfate input increased MeHg levels (89-240%) in soils with low ambient sulfate levels (<100 mg kg -1 ) but had no effect on high-sulfate soils (>380 mg kg -1 ). These could be explained by the diverse responses of Hg mobility and microbial Hg methylators to sulfate input at different ambient sulfate levels. The Fuyang River system (FRS) in north China, for a long time, is seriously polluted with organic compounds and heavy metals due to industrialization. However, the information on heavy metal pollution in this area is still limited, and health risks raised by trace elements are neglected up to now. To characterize the heavy metal pollutants and assess their potential ecological risks scientifically in FRS, surface sediments were collected from 66 sampling sites selected according to the hydrological and anthropogenic conditions along the river. A total of twelve metal pollutants (e.g., Cr, As, and Hg) in the sediments were detected among the distributaries. A combining application of geoaccumulation index (I geo ), ratio of secondary phase and primary phase (RSP), and the ecological risk factor (Er i ) in this study gave systematic assessment results of single or combined pollution status raised by heavy metals in this area. The results show that Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd, Co, and Sn are mainly dispersed in the river reaches of Xingtai City and pose potential health risks in midstream, as per the geoaccumulation index and Pearson's correlation analyses. In particular, Cd accumulates strongly in sediments of Ming River and Aixinzhuang dam from Xingtai City. In upstream and downstream of FRS, the potential ecological risk is low, except in Yongnian County where high ecological risk was caused by Cd and Hg. These findings provide new insights into the pollution characteristics and assessment of the potential ecological risks induced by heavy metals along FRS, which suggest new directions should strategically tend to typical pollutants control by policy formulation and taking effective measures to prevent and manage heavy metal pollution in North China., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Various environmental stresses strongly influence plant development. Among these stresses is drought, which is a serious threat that can reduce agricultural productivity and obstruct plant growth. Although the mechanism of plants in response to drought has been studied extensively, the adaptive strategies of Amygdalus mira ( Koehne ) Yü et Lu grown in drought and rewatered habitats remain undefined. Amygdalus mira from the Tibetan Plateau has outstanding nutritional and medicinal values and can thrive in extreme drought. In this study, the physiological and proteomic responses in leaves of A. mira were investigated during drought and recovery period. The changes in plant growth, photosynthesis, enzymes, and non-enzymatic antioxidant under drought and rewatering were also analyzed in leaves. Compared with controls, A. mira showed stronger adaptive and resistant characteristics to drought. In addition, the proteomic technique was also used to study drought tolerance mechanisms in A. mira leaves. Differentially expressed proteins were identified using mass spectrometry. Accordingly, 103 proteins involved in 10 functional categories: cytoskeleton dynamics, energy metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, photosynthesis, transcription and translation, transport, stress and defense, molecular chaperones, other materials metabolism, and unknown function were identified. These results showed that an increase of stress-defense-related proteins in leaves after drought treatment contributed to coping with drought. Importantly, A. mira developed an adaptive mechanism to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS), including enhancing antioxidant enzyme activities and non-enzymatic antioxidant contents, reducing energy, and adjusting the efficiency of gas exchanges. Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been introduced to and developed in China for environmental engineering over the most prosperous three decades (1990-2020). To study the origin, development process, and future trend of CWs, this review summarized a wide range of literatures between 1990 and 2020 by Chinese authors. Firstly, the publication number over years, research highlights, and the author contributions with the most published papers in this field were conducted through bibliometric analysis. Secondly, the most principal components of CWs, substrates and macrophytes were summarized and analyzed. Thirdly, the typical application cases from traditional CWs, pond systems to combined pond-wetland systems were presented. In China, CWs were predominately distributed in the east of the so-called 'Hu Huanyong Line'. Therefore CWs were limited by the socio-economic level and climatic conditions. It is unquestionable that the overall level of China's CWs has improved significantly, and one of the most prominent features has started towards the plural pattern development. There has been a trend of large-scale or low-cost CW application in the recent years. However, lifecycle research and management are required for better strategies in the future., (Copyright © 2020. Mercury (Hg) contamination in mangrove ecosystems has received increasing attention in recent years. Although many studies have investigated methylmercury (MeHg) contamination and its relationship to a number of environmental factors in mangrove sediments, the production of MeHg in this carbon-rich ecosystem has not been fully evaluated. In this study, we measured the total mercury (THg) and MeHg concentrations in the sediments collected from seven mangrove forests in China. In addition, we examined the origin and quality of sedimentary organic matter (OM), trying to evaluate their influence on the MeHg accumulation in mangrove sediments. We found that litterfall played an important role in regulating THg and MeHg contents in mangrove sediments. THg and MeHg concentrations in the mangrove sediments were positively correlated to OM content and the labile fraction of the OM. Multiple evidence (stable carbon isotopes, monosaccharide compositions, and biogenic silica) suggested that OM in mangrove sediments was dominated by input from litterfall. THg and MeHg concentrations were elevated at the sediments with higher input of mangrove OM. We observed that addition of mangrove litter stimulated the production of MeHg under anaerobic conditions. Overall, our results suggested that litterfall acted as a source of inorganic Hg, labile carbon, and low-molecular-weight OM which greatly favor the Hg methylation. Methylmercury (MeHg) is one of the highly toxic and bio-accumulated forms of mercury. Its presence in wastewater treatment processes has been evidenced in recent studies. Considering its enrichment in sewage sludge and the ecological risk associated with its land application, this study investigated the fate of mercury and MeHg in full-scale anaerobic digestion combined with Cambi thermal hydrolysis based on one-year sampling. Results showed that the advanced anaerobic digestion could increase the total mercury (THg) content from 4.35 ± 0.43 mg/kg in raw sludge to 6.37 ± 1.05 mg/kg in digested sludge, and the MeHg content decreased from 1.61 to 8.94 ng/g in raw sludge to 0.21-2.03 ng/g after anaerobic digestion. The demethylation of MeHg was dominant in both thermal hydrolysis and anaerobic digestion; it was mostly derived from the physico-chemical impacts such as chemical decomposition in thermal hydrolysis and precipitation in anaerobic digestion. Although the reported microbial methylators, such as Methanosarcina and Clostridia, were dominant in anaerobic digestion, the relative abundances of hgcA and merA were relatively low and did not correlate with the MeHg profiles. Soil salinity is one of the major environmental factors, influencing agricultural productivity of crops. As a non-edible and ideal oilseed crop, castor (Ricinus communis L.) has great industrial value in biofuel, but molecular mechanisms of salt stress regulation are still unknown. In this study, the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) for differential salt tolerance in two castor cultivar (wild castor : Y, cultivated castor 'Tongbi 5': Z) were identified. 12 libraries were sampled for Illumina high-throughput sequencing to consider 132,426 nonredundant unigenes and 31,221 gene loci. Multiple phytohormones and transcription factors (TFs) were correlated with salt-tolerance and differently enriched in these two genotypes. The type 2C protein phosphatases (PP2C) homologs were all upregulated under salt stress. Importantly, IAA (1), DELLA (1) and Jasmonate zim domain (JAZ) (1) were also identified and found to be differentially expressed. Based on the co-expressed module by regulatory networks and heatmap analysis, ERF/AP2, WRKY and bHLH families were prominently participate in high salt stress response of wild and cultivated castor. Finally, these results highlight that the hub DEGs and families were more accumulated in cultivated castor than those in wild castor, providing novel insights into the salinity adaptive mechanisms and genetic improvement in castor., (Copyright © 2020. Improvement of water quality has frequently been delayed due to high recycling rates of nutrients across the sediment-water interface in a reservoir. Diffusive fluxes and annual loads of ammonia nitrogen (NH 4 + -N) and phosphate (PO 4 3- -P) in sediments from Guanting Reservoir (GTR) were estimated according to their vertical distribution. The average contents of NH 4 + -N and PO 4 3- -P in surface pore water were higher by factors of 6.9 - 11.7 and 1.3 - 6.4 than those in overlying water, respectively. The ranges of fluxes were 1.59 - 13.0 (mg m 2  d -1 ) for NH 4 + -N, and 0.002 - 0.196 (mg m 2  d -1 ) for PO 4 3- -P. The annual load contributions from sediments of GTR were 659 t a -1 for NH 4 + -N and 4.83 t a -1 for PO 4 3- -P. Notably, the upstream of GTR accounted for 50.7% annual loads for NH 4 + -N, while the downstream contributed 71.2% loads to PO 4 3- -P. This study will better inform future environmental management for the reservoir.

The cycling of phosphorus (P), iron (Fe) and sulfur (S) in sediments has been previously investigated, but its impacts on the formation of black-odorous waterbodies remains unclear. Here, high-resolution (i.e., 2 mm for P and Fe, and 0.042 mm for S of 2D presentation) simultaneous measurements of P, Fe, and S profiles in river sediments based on the diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) technique were conducted in the Pearl River Delta region, South China. Similar distribution trends and significant positive correlations (R = 0.67-0.93, p < 0.01) were observed between Fe and P. Considering the high diffusion fluxes of Fe and P together, it revealed that P release was promoted by the Fe reduction. The two-dimensional labile S profiles showed that their concentrations in sediments were higher by factors of 1.6-20 than those in overlying water. The minor diffusion fluxes of S and the accumulation of acid volatile sulfide indicated that S 2- combining with Fe 2+ occurred prior to diffusion. Furthermore, the formation mechanisms of black-odorous waterbodies were explored: (i) oxygen depletion by COD and NH 4 + ‒N and large amounts of sulfate input were the main exogenous driving factors. (ii) Reduction of Fe and S to form ferrous sulfide accompanied with P release in sediments were the dominant endogenous causes. Hearing is considered the primary sensory modality of cetaceans and enables their vital life functions. Information on the hearing sensitivity variability within a species obtained in a biologically relevant wild context is fundamental to evaluating potential noise impact and population-relevant management. Here, non-invasive auditory evoked-potential methods were adopted to describe the audiograms (11.2-152 kHz) of a group of four wild Yangtze finless porpoises (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis asiaeorientalis) during a capture-and-release health assessment project in Poyang Lake, China. All audiograms presented a U shape, generally similar to those of other delphinids and phocoenids. The lowest auditory threshold (51-55 dB re 1 µPa) was identified at a test frequency of 76 kHz, which was higher than that observed in aquarium porpoises (54 kHz). The good hearing range (within 20 dB of the best hearing sensitivity) was from approximately 20 to 145 kHz, and the low- and high-frequency hearing cut-offs (threshold > 120 dB re l μPa) were 5.6 and 170 kHz, respectively. Compared with aquarium porpoises, wild porpoises have significantly better hearing sensitivity at 32 and 76 kHz and worse sensitivity at 54, 108 and 140 kHz. The audiograms of this group can provide a basis for better understanding the potential impact of anthropogenic noise.

Underwater sound plays an important role in some critical life functions of many aquatic animals. Underwater noise pollution has received relatively more attention in ocean systems. However, little attention has been paid to freshwater systems, such as the Yangtze River which is the habitat of critically endangered Yangtze finless porpoises (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis asiaeorientalis). In 2012, the underwater noise levels in 25 sites along the middle and lower sections of the Yangtze River were measured. The root mean square sound pressure level (SPL) and unweighted sound exposure level (SEL) at each site ranged between 105 ± 2.4 (median ± quartile deviation) and 150 ± 5.5 dB. Obvious spatial and temporal variations in the SPL were detected among the 25 sites. The SPL and SEL in the middle section of the Yangtze River were smaller (approximately 15 dB) and fluctuated more compared to those in the lower section. The power spectrum in the mainstem was site specific. However, all the spectra levels were higher than the audiogram of Yangtze finless porpoises. Majority of the sites had an averaged cumulative unweighted SEL (72%) and cumulative weighted SEL (68%) that surpassed the underwater acoustic thresholds for onset of hearing temporal threshold shifts for finless porpoise. Porpoise bio-sonars were detected in 89% of sonar monitoring sites indicating that noise pollution in the Yangtze River greatly threatened porpoise survival. In 8% of the sites, the averaged cumulative weighted SEL exceeded that of underwater acoustic thresholds causing non-recoverable permanent threshold shifts of finless porpoises auditory system whereas it was less than 1 dB below the underwater acoustic thresholds in other 8% of the sites. These sites urgently needed noise mitigation and management strategies. Mangrove sediments act as an important natural sink and a secondary source for trace metals. The main objective of this study was to investigate metal contamination and its relationship to mangrove-derived carbohydrates in mangrove sediments. Sixteen metals (Be, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, As, Sr, Cd, Sn, Sb, Ba, Tl, and Pb）were analyzed in the surface sediments from four sites at different latitudes on the southeast coastline of China. The sedimentary organic matter was characterized by Rock-Eval pyrolysis, and the neutral sugars were examined by gas chromatograph mass spectrometry. Our results from the enrichment factors indicated that the mangrove sediments were no enriched by Ga, Sr, and Ba, minor enriched by Be, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Sn, Sb, Tl, and Pb, and moderate enriched by Cd. Litterfall was a major source of organic matter in the mangrove sediments, and the neutral sugars were mainly derived from this litterfall. Significant correlations were detected between the total organic carbon, pyrolytic parameters, neutral sugars, and enrichment factors of V, Cr, Co, Ni, Zn, and Cd, suggesting the input of neutral carbohydrates played an important role in enhancing the metal accumulation in the mangrove sediments. Eutrophication with the sustained occurrence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) has been widely recognized since the 1990s as one of the largest drinking water quality issues in the middle and lower reaches of the Han River (MLHR, the largest tributary of Yangtze). Due to impoundment of the middle route of the South to North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP), the height of the Danjiangkou Reservoir Dam was raised in 2014, resulting in lower discharge (or flow rate) for the MLHR, and subsequently enhancing the potential occurrence probabilities of HABs. Here, the characteristics of HABs that took place during the 1992 to 2018 period were summarized based on the historical water quality and meteorological data. Then, some key factors governing the HABs were analyzed to explore the underlying mechanisms. The results showed that diatoms (Cyclotella sp.) were the dominant species of the HABs. The simultaneous increase of algal density and total phosphorus (TP) concentration during algal blooms revealed that phosphorus was the key limiting nutrient for algal growth. The algal density was significantly negatively correlated with water discharge (R 2  = 0.764), or flow rate (R 2  = 0.711), indicating that the increase of water discharge from Danjiangkou Reservoir could possibly mitigate the occurrence of HABs. The threshold level of water discharge for HAB prevention was estimated as 500 m 3 /s in Xiantao Gauging Station before the height of the Dam was raised in 2014, but it subsequently increased to 800 m 3 /s afterwards. Our study clearly revealed that the occurrence probabilities of HABs in the MLHR were higher than before because of the increase in the phosphorus concentration and the decrease in water discharge under the new engineering conditions of the SNWDP. Chloroplast development and photosynthesis require the proper assembly and turnover of photosynthetic protein complexes. Chloroplasts harbor a repertoire of proteases to facilitate proteostasis and development. We have previously used an Arabidopsis leaf variegation mutant, yellow variegated2 ( var2 ), defective in thylakoid FtsH protease complexes, as a tool to dissect the genetic regulation of chloroplast development. Here, we report a new genetic enhancer mutant of var2 , enhancer of variegation3-1 ( evr3-1 ). We confirm that EVR3 encodes a chloroplast metalloprotease, reported previously as ethylene-dependent gravitropism-deficient and yellow-green1 (EGY1)/ammonium overly sensitive1 (AMOS1). We observed that mutations in EVR3 / EGY1 / AMOS1 cause more severe leaf variegation in var2-5 and synthetic lethality in var2-4 Using a modified blue-native PAGE system, we reveal abnormal accumulations of photosystem I, photosystem II, and light-harvesting antenna complexes in EVR3 / EGY1 / AMOS1 mutants. Moreover, we discover distinct roles of VAR2 and EVR3/EGY1/AMOS1 in the turnover of photosystem II reaction center under high light stress. In summary, our findings indicate that two chloroplast metalloproteases, VAR2/AtFtsH2 and EVR3/EGY1/AMOS1, function coordinately to regulate chloroplast development and reveal new roles of EVR3/EGY1/AMOS1 in regulating chloroplast proteostasis in Arabidopsis., (© 2020 Qi et al.)

It is widely acknowledged that dams affect sediment transport and water quality. To support water management of reservoirs, it is useful to explore how the fractions of phosphorus (P) in sediments were changed after the dam was built. The aim of this study was to assess the spatial and temporal trends of the P fractions in sediments from the Miyun Reservoir, a pivotal drinking water supply for Beijing City, the capital of China. Nine surface sediment samples, together with a sediment core, were collected. The concentrations of total P (TP) and their fractions were then determined by using a sequential extraction method. The results showed that the reservoir was classified into three areas spatially based on the TP concentrations, i.e., high (Baihe area), medium (transitional area), and low (Chaohe area) concentrations. The concentrations of iron-bound P (BD-P) and metal oxide-bound P (NaOH-P) were higher in the Baihe and Chaohe regions than those in the transitional area and tended to increase with water depth. Dam construction can lead to the concentrations of P increased in sediments and further increase the potential of internal P loadings. This study revealed the effect of dam construction on sedimentary P accumulation. The results will be helpful in better understanding the mobility and bioavailability of P in the aquatic ecosystem, which aim to achieve a more highly targeted environmental management for this important region.

Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) has been widely used as a sorbent for passive sampling of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in aquatic environments. However, it has seen only limited application in passive sampling for measurement of freely dissolved concentrations of parent and substituted PAHs (SPAHs), which are known to be toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic. Here, the 16 priority PAHs and some typical PAHs were selected as target compounds and were simultaneously determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS). Some batch experiments were conducted in the laboratory to explore the adsorption kinetics of the target compounds in LDPE membranes. The results showed that both PAHs and SPAHs could reach equilibrium status within 19-38 days in sorption kinetic experiments. The coefficients of partitioning between LDPE film (50 μm thickness) and water (K LDPE ) for the 16 priority PAHs were in good agreement with previously reported values, and the values of K LDPE for the 9 SPAHs are reported in this study for the first time. Significant linear relationships were observed, i.e., log K LDPE  = 0.705 × log K OW  + 1.534 for PAHs (R 2  = 0.8361, p < 0.001) and log K LDPE  = 0.458 × log K OW  + 3.092 for SPAHs (R 2  = 0.5609, p = 0.0077). The selected LDPE film was also proven to meet the condition of "zero sink" for the selected target compounds. Wetlands are highly productive and biologically diverse environments that provide numerous ecosystem services, but can also be sources of methylmercury (MeHg) production and export. Mangrove wetlands contribute up to 15% of the coastal sediment carbon storage and ~10% of the particulate terrestrial carbon exported to the ocean. Thus, mercury (Hg) methylation in mangrove sediments and subsequent MeHg output to adjacent waters could have a great impact on global Hg cycling. In this review, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the literature on worldwide Hg concentrations in mangrove ecosystems, and the results reveal that a large range of total Hg (THg) and MeHg concentrations is detected in mangrove systems. Then, we discuss the potential roles of organic matter (OM) in controlling the Hg biogeochemistry in mangrove sediments. The intense OM decomposition by anoxic reduction (e.g., sulfate reduction) drastically affects sediment chemistries, such as redox potential, pH, and sulfur speciation, all of which may have a great impact on MeHg production. While the outwelling of carbon from mangroves has been extensively examined, little is known about their roles in exporting MeHg to adjacent waters. Our understanding of Hg biogeochemical processes in mangrove systems is constrained by the limited MeHg data and a lack of in-depth studies on the Hg methylation potential in this ecologically important environment. The SDF-1/CXCR4 signaling plays a critical role in the trafficking of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to the sites of tissue damage. Our recent study demonstrated that atorvastatin (ATV) treatment improved the survival of MSCs, and ATV pretreated MSCs ( ATV- MSCs) exhibited enhanced engraftment to injured myocardium. In this study, we investigated whether combined treatment with ATV and ATV- MSCs enhances cardiac repair and regeneration by activating SDF-1/CXCR4 signaling in a rat model of acute myocardial infarction. Rats were randomized into eight groups: the Sham, AMI control and 6 other groups that were subjected to AMI followed by treatment with MSCs, ATV, ATV+MSCs, ATV- MSCs, ATV+ ATV- MSCs, ATV+ ATV- MSCs+AMD3100 (SDF-1/CXCR4 antagonist), respectively. ATV+ ATV- MSCs significantly potentiated targeted recruitment of MSCs to peri-infarct myocardium and resulted in further improvements in cardiac function and reduction in scar size compared with MSCs treatment alone at 4-week after AMI. More importantly, the cardioprotective effects conferred by ATV+ ATV- MSCs were almost completely abolished by AMD3100 treatment. Together, our study demonstrated that ATV+ ATV- MSCs significantly enhanced the targeted recruitment and survival of transplanted MSCs, and resulted in subsequent cardiac function improvement by augmenting SDF-1/CXCR4 signaling., Competing Interests: None.

Concentrations, sources and risk of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were investigated in surface sediments from 19 representative tributaries in a regional scale of Chongqing City. The total concentration of 16 PAHs (ΣPAHs) ranged from 221 to 3205 ng g -1 with a mean of 1055 ng g -1 . Most tributaries of the Jialing River exhibited significantly higher ΣPAHs concentrations (mean 1864 ng g -1 ) compared to those flowing into the Yangtze River (mean 787 ng g -1 ). Isomeric ratio and hierarchical clustering analysis showed combustion may impact sedimentary PAHs at most center sites of the City, while PAHs at most sites were mixed of petrogenic and pyrogenic sources. Toxicity equivalency concentration for carcinogenic PAH were 2-4 times more than the Dutch limit. More comprehensive assessment of safety is suggested to reduce environmental risk of PAHs in sediments.

Consumption of rice has been shown to be an important route of dietary exposure to methylmercury (MeHg, a neurotoxin) for Asians having a low fish but high rice diet. Therefore, factors that increase MeHg production and bioaccumulation in soil-rice systems, could enhance the risk of MeHg exposure. On the basis of a national-scale survey in China (64 sites in 12 provinces) and rice cultivation experiments, we report that straw amendment, a globally prevalent farming practice, could increase MeHg concentrations in paddy soils (11-1043%) and rice grains (95%). By carrying out a series of batch incubation, seedling uptake and sand culture experiments, we demonstrate that these increases could be attributed to (1) enhanced abundances/activities of microbial methylators and the transformation of refractory HgS to organic matter-complexed Hg, facilitating microbial Hg methylation in soils; (2) enhanced MeHg mobility, and increased root lengths (35-41%) and tip numbers (60-105%), increasing MeHg uptake by rice roots; and (3) enhanced MeHg translocation to rice grains from other tissues. Results of this study emphasize fresh organic matter-enhanced MeHg production and bioaccumulation, and highlight the increased risk of MeHg after straw amendment and thus the need for new policies concerning straw management.

Eutrophication is a major environmental concern in lake systems, impacting the ecological risks of contaminants and drinking water safety. It has long been believed that eutrophication and thus algal blooms would reduce methylmercury (MeHg) levels in water, as well as MeHg bioaccumulation and trophic transfer (e.g., by growth dilution). In this study, however, we demonstrated that algae settlement and decomposition after algal blooms increased MeHg levels in sediments (54-514% higher), as evidenced by the results from sediments in 10 major lakes in China. These could in turn raise concerns about enhanced trophic transfer of MeHg and deterioration of water quality after algal blooms, especially considering that 9 out of the 10 examined lakes also serve as drinking water sources. The enhanced microbial MeHg production in sediments could be explained by the algal organic matter (AOM)-enhanced abundances of microbial methylators as well as the input of algae-inhabited microbes into sediments, but not Hg speciation in sediments: (1) Several AOM components (e.g., aromatic proteins and soluble microbial by product-like material with generally low molecular weights), rather than the bulk AOM, played key roles in enhancing the abundances of microbial methylators. The copies of Archaea-hgcA methylation genes were 51-397% higher in algae-added sediments; thus, MeHg production was also higher. (2) Input of algal biomass-inhabited microbial methylators contributed to 2-21% of total Archaea-hgcA in the 10 lake sediments with added algal biomass. (3) However, AOM-induced changes in Hg speciation, with implications on Hg availability to microbial methylators, played a minor role in enhancing microbial Hg methylation in sediments as seen in X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) data. Our results suggest the need to better understand the biogeochemistry and risks of contaminants in eutrophic lakes, especially during the period of algae settlement and decomposition following algal blooms., (Copyright © 2019 The Authors.
