The ability of particles to "tunnel" through potential energy barriers is a purely quantum phenomenon. A classical particle in a symmetric double-well potential, with energy below the potential barrier, will be trapped on one side of the potential well. A quantum particle, however, can sit on both sides, in either a symmetric state or an antisymmetric state. An analogous phenomenon occurs in conservative classical systems with two degrees of freedom and no potential barriers. If only the energy is conserved, the phase space will be a mixture of regular "islands" embedded in a sea of chaos. Classically, a particle sitting in one regular island cannot reach another symmetrically located regular island when the islands are separated by chaos. However, a quantum particle can sit on both regular islands, in symmetric and antisymmetric states, due to chaos-assisted tunneling. Here, we give an overview of the theory and recent experimental observations of this phenomenon.

Dyes with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties have gained interests due to their bright luminescence in solid-state aggregates. While fluorescence from AIE dyes have been widely exploited, relatively little is known about aggregation-induced stimulated emission. Here, we investigated stimulated emission of tetraphenylethene (TPE)-based organoboron AIE dyes, TPEQBN, in thin films and in microcavity lasers. Using femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy, gain coefficients up to 230 cm -1 at 500 nm were measured. Using rate equations, we analyzed concentration- and pump-dependent gain dynamics as well as laser build up dynamics. During laser oscillation, radiative stimulated emission allows high instantaneous quantum yield greater than 90% to be achieved. We fabricated solid-state microspheres made of 100% AIE dyes via microfluidic emulsion and solvent evaporation method. Coupled with high gain and high refractive index of 1.76, microspheres as small as 2 μm in diameter showed lasing by nanosecond pumping with a threshold of ~10 pJ μm -2 . Polymer coated, but not bare, microspheres were internalized by live cells and generated narrowband cavity mode emission from within the cytoplasm. Classification and recognition tasks performed on photonic hardware-based neural networks often require at least one offline computational step, such as in the increasingly popular reservoir computing paradigm. Removing this offline step can significantly improve the response time and energy efficiency of such systems. We present numerical simulations of different algorithms that utilize ultrafast photonic spiking neurons as receptive fields to allow for image recognition without an offline computing step. In particular, we discuss the merits of event, spike-time and rank-order based algorithms adapted to this system. Continuous-wave (CW) pumped lasers with device areas below 1 µm 2 constitute a key step to meeting the energy efficiency requirement for on-chip optical communications. However, a debate about whether a sub-micrometer device size and low threshold can be simultaneously satisfied has persisted owing to insurmountable radiation losses when approaching the optical diffraction limit. Herein, a record-small CW optically pumped perovskite laser with a device area of 0.65 µm 2 is demonstrated. The thresholds of sub-micrometer lasers can be found lower than those of several-micrometer counterparts, and are ascribed to the enlarged group refractive index and modal confinement resulting from the enhanced exciton-photon coupling. Moreover, the operation temperature is elevated to 150 K through the reduction in heat generation. The development of chip-level near-infrared laser sources using two-dimensional semiconductors is imperative to maintain the architecture of van der Waals integrated optical interconnections. However, the established two-dimensional semiconductor lasers may have either the disadvantages of poor controllability of monolayered gain media, large optical losses on silicon, or complicated fabrication of external optical microcavities. This study demonstrates room-temperature near-infrared lasing from mechanically exfoliated γ-phase indium selenide (InSe) microflakes free from external optical microcavities at a center wavelength of ∼1030 nm. The lasing action occurs at the sub-Mott density level and is generated by exciton-exciton scattering with a high net modal optical gain of ∼1029 cm -1 . Moreover, the lasing is sustained for microdisks fabricated by a simple laser printing with a reduced threshold. These results suggest that InSe is a promising material for near-infrared microlasers and can be employed in a wide range of applications, including imaging, sensing, and optical interconnects.

Core-shell architecture enables to impart unique customized properties to microparticles, through the proper selection of composition and aggregation state of the inner and outer materials. Here, the synthesis of microparticles with a chiral dielectric core and a metallic shell of gold nanoparticles is demonstrated. The chiral core is obtained by UV induced polymerization of the self-organized droplets of a cholesteric reactive mesogen in a chloroauric acid aqueous solution. Gold nanoparticles precipitation contemporarily occurs upon UV irradiation, covering the microparticles surface. Electron microscopy and optical spectroscopy investigations give evidence that the degree of coverage of the core by gold nanoparticles, with size less than 100 nm, depends on the chloroauric acid concentration, while their aggregation is influenced by the polymeric surface morphology. The optical properties of the chiral microparticles are modified by the gold shell. Specifically, gold coating of dye doped chiral microparticles, working as Bragg onion resonators, clearly improves the stability of omnidirectional microlasers. Perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have emerged as attractive gain materials for solution-processed microlasers. Despite the recent surge of reports in this field, it is still challenging to develop low-cost perovskite NC-based microlasers with high performance. Herein, we demonstrate low-threshold, spectrally tunable lasing from ensembles of CsPbBr 3 NCs deposited on silica microspheres. Multiple whispering-gallery-mode lasing is achieved from individual NC/microspheres with a low threshold of ∼3.1 μ J cm -2 and cavity quality factor of ∼1193. Through time-resolved photoluminescence measurements, electron-hole plasma recombination is elucidated as the lasing mechanism. By tuning the microsphere diameter, the desirable single-mode lasing is successfully achieved. Remarkably, the CsPbBr 3 NCs display durable room-temperature lasing under ∼10 7 shots of pulsed laser excitation, substantially exceeding the stability of conventional colloidal NCs. Conjugated polymers have emerged as ideal organic laser materials for the excellent optoelectrical properties and facile processability. During a typical lasing process, resonator configurations with specific geometry are essential to provide optical feedback and then amplified light. Herein, we summarized the geometry and working mechanism of several typical resonator configurations formed with conjugated polymers. Meanwhile, recent advances in fabrication techniques and lasing performance are also discussed to provide new ideas for the design and optimization of microcavity geometries. Microscopic lasers represent a promising tool for the development of cutting-edge photonic devices thanks to their ability to enhance light-matter interaction at the microscale. In this work, we realize liquid microlasers with tunable emission by exploiting the self-formation of three-dimensional liquid droplets into a polymeric matrix driven by viscoelastic dewetting. We design a flexible device to be used as a smart photonic label which is detachable and reusable on various types of substrates such as paper or fabric. The innovative lasing emission mechanism proposed here is based on whispering gallery mode emission coupled to random lasing, the latter prompted by the inclusion of dielectric compounds into the active gain medium. The wide possibility of modulating the emission wavelength of the microlasers by acting on different parameters, such as the cavity size, type and volume fraction of the dielectrics, and gain medium, offers a multitude of spectroscopic encoding schemes for the realization of photonic barcodes and labels to be employed in anticounterfeiting applications and multiplexed bioassays.

Porous organic frameworks have emerged as the promising platforms to construct tunable microlasers. Most of these microlasers are achieved from metal-organic frameworks via meticulously accommodating the laser dyes with the sacrifice of the pore space, yet they often suffer from the obstacles of either relatively limited gain concentration or sophisticated fabrication techniques. Herein, we reported on the first hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) microlasers with color-tunable performance based on conformation-dependent stimulated emissions. Two types of HOF microcrystals with the same gain lumnogen as the building block were synthesized via a temperature-controlled self-assembly method. The distinct frameworks offer different conformations of the gain building block, which lead to great impacts on their conjugation degrees and excited-state processes, resulting in remarkably distinct emission colors (blue and green). Accordingly, blue/green-color lasing actions were achieved in these two types of HOFs based on well-faceted assembled wire-like cavities. These results offer a deep insight on the exploitation of HOF-based miniaturized lasers with desired nanophotonics performances.

Among the efforts to improve the performances of microlasers, optimization of the gain properties and cavity parameters of these lasers has attracted significant attention recently. Distributed feedback lasers, as one of the most promising candidate technologies for electrically pumped microlasers, can be combined with dual-gratings. This combination provides additional freedom for the design of the laser cavity. Here, a holographic dual-grating is designed to improve the distributed feedback laser performance. The holographic dual-grating laser consists of a colloidal quantum dot film with two parallel gratings, comprising first-order (210 nm) and second-order (420 nm) gratings that can be fabricated easily using a combination of spin coating and interference lithography. The feedback and the output from the cavity are controlled using the first-order grating and the second-order grating, respectively. Through careful design and analysis of the dual-grating, a balance is achieved between the feedback and the cavity output such that the lasing threshold based on the dual-grating is nearly half the threshold of conventional distributed feedback lasers. Additionally, the holographic dual-grating laser shows a high level of stability because of the high stability of the colloidal quantum dots against photobleaching.

Microlasers in near-degenerate supermodes lay the cornerstone for studies of non-Hermitian physics, novel light sources, and advanced sensors. Recent experiments of the stimulated scattering in supermode microcavities reported beating phenomena, interpreted as dual-mode lasing, which, however, contradicts their single-mode nature due to the clamped pump field. Here, we investigate the supermode Raman laser in a whispering-gallery microcavity and demonstrate experimentally its single-mode lasing behavior with a side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) up to 37 dB, despite the emergence of near-degenerate supermodes by the backscattering between counterpropagating waves. Moreover, the beating signal is recognized as the transient interference during the switching process between the two supermode lasers. Chiral light-matter interactions have emerged as a promising area in biophysics and quantum optics. Great progress in enhancing chiral light-matter interactions have been investigated through passive resonators or spontaneous emission. Nevertheless, the interaction between chiral biomolecules and stimulated emission remains unexplored. Here we introduce the concept of a biological chiral laser by amplifying chiral light-matter interactions in an active resonator through stimulated emission process. Green fluorescent proteins or chiral biomolecules encapsulated in Fabry-Perot microcavity served as the gain material while excited by either left-handed or right-handed circularly polarized pump laser. Owing to the nonlinear pump energy dependence of stimulated emission, significant enhancement of chiral light-matter interactions was demonstrated. Detailed experiments and theory revealed that a lasing dissymmetry factor is determined by molecular absorption dissymmetry factor at its excitation wavelength. Finally, chirality transfer was investigated under a stimulated emission process through resonance energy transfer. Our findings elucidate the mechanism of stimulated chiral light-matter interactions, providing better understanding of light-matter interaction in biophysics, chiral sensing, and quantum biophotonics.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently emerged as appealing platforms to construct microlasers owing to their compelling characters combining the excellent stability of inorganic materials and processable characters of organic materials. However, MOF microstructures developed thus far are generally composed of multiple edge boundaries due to their crystalline nature, which consequently raises significant scattering losses that are detrimental to lasing performance. In this work, we propose a strategy to overcome the above drawback by designing spherically shaped MOFs microcavities. Such spherical MOF microstructures are constructed by amorphizing MOFs with a topological distortion network through introducing flexible building blocks into the growth environment. With an ultra-smooth surface and excellent circular boundaries, the acquired spherical microcavities possess a Q factor as high as ≈10 4 and can provide sufficient feedback for high-quality single-mode lasing oscillations. MOF-based one-dimensional materials have received increasing attention in the nanophotonics field, but it is still difficult in the flexible shape evolution of MOF micro/nanocrystals for desired optical functionalities due to the susceptible solvothermal growth process. Herein, we report on the well-controlled shape evolution of pure-MOF microcrystals with optical waveguide and lasing performances based on a bottom-up and top-down synergistic method. The MOF microcrystals from solvothermal synthesis (bottom-up) enable the evolution from microrods via microtubes to nanowires through a chelating agent-assisted etching process (top-down). The three types of MOF 1D-microstructures with high crystallinity and smooth surfaces all exhibit efficient optical waveguide performance. Furthermore, MOF nanowire with lowest propagation loss served as low-threshold pure-MOF nanolasers with Fabry-Pérot resonance. Lasers based on biological materials are attracting an increasing interest in view of their use in integrated and transient photonics. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) as optical biopolymer in combination with highly emissive dyes has been reported to have excellent potential in this respect. However, achieving miniaturized lasing systems based on solid-state DNA shaped in different geometries to confine and enhance emission is still a challenge, and the physicochemical mechanisms originating fluorescence enhancement are not fully understood. Herein, a class of wavelength-tunable lasers based on DNA nanofibers is demonstrated, for which optical properties are highly controlled through the system morphology. A synergistic effect is highlighted at the basis of lasing action. Through a quantum chemical investigation, it is shown that the interaction of DNA with the encapsulated dye leads to hindered twisting and suppressed channels for the nonradiative decay. This is combined with effective waveguiding, optical gain, and tailored mode confinement to promote morphologically controlled lasing in DNA-based nanofibers. Combined dry-wet transient materials and devices are introduced, which are based on water-dissolvable dye-doped polymers layered onto nonpolar cyclic hydrocarbon sublimating substrates. Light-emitting heterostructures showing amplified spontaneous emission are obtained on transient elements and used as illumination sources for speckle-free, full-field imaging, and transient optical labels are realized that incorporate QR-codes with stably encoded information. The transient behavior is also studied at the microscopic scale, highlighting the real-time evolution of material domains in the sublimating compound. Finally, the exhausted components are fully soluble in water thus being naturally degradable. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an emerging kind of laser material, yet they remain a challenge in the controlled fabrication of crystal nanostructures with desired morphology for tuning their optical microcavities. Herein, the shape-engineering of pure MOF microlasers was demonstrated based on the coordination-mode-tailored method. The one-dimensional (1D) microwires and 2D microplates were selectively fabricated through changing the HCl concentration to tailor the coordination modes. Both the single-crystalline microwires and microplates with strong optical confinement functioned as low-threshold MOF microlasers. Moreover, distinct lasing behaviors of 1D and 2D MOF microcrystals confirm a typical shape-dependent microcavity effect: 1D microwires serve as Fabry-Pérot (FP) resonators, and 2D microplates lead to the whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microcavities. These results provide a special pathway for the exploitation of MOF-based micro/nanolasers with on-demand functions.

2D Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites (RPPs) have aroused growing attention in light harvesting and emission applications owing to their high environmental stability. Recently, coherent light emission of RPPs was reported, however mostly from inhomologous thin films that involve cascade intercompositional energy transfer. Lasing and fundamental understanding of intrinsic laser dynamics in homologous RPPs free from intercompositional energy transfer is still inadequate. Herein, the lasing and loss mechanisms of homologous 2D (BA) 2 (MA) n -1 Pb n RPP thin flakes mechanically exfoliated from the bulk crystal are reported. Multicolor lasing is achieved from the large-n RPPs (n ≥ 3) in the spectral range of 620-680 nm but not from small-n RPPs (n ≤ 2) even down to 78 K. With decreasing n, the lasing threshold increases significantly and the characteristic temperature decreases as 49, 25, and 20 K for n = 5, 4, and 3, respectively. The n-engineered lasing behaviors are attributed to the stronger Auger recombination and exciton-phonon interaction as a result of the enhanced quantum confinement in the smaller-n perovskites. These results not only advance the fundamental understanding of loss mechanisms in both inhomologous and homologous RPP lasers but also provide insights into developing low-threshold, substrate-free, and multicolor 2D semiconductor microlasers.3 n +1 RPP thin flakes mechanically exfoliated from the bulk crystal are reported. Halide-perovskite microlasers have demonstrated fascinating performance owing to their low-threshold lasing at room temperature and low-cost fabrication. However, being synthesized chemically, controllable fabrication of such microlasers remains challenging, and it requires template-assisted growth or complicated nanolithography. Here, we suggest and implement an approach for the fabrication of microlasers by direct laser ablation of a thin film on glass with donut-shaped femtosecond laser beams. The fabricated microlasers represent MAPbBr x I y microdisks with 760 nm thickness and diameters ranging from 2 to 9 μm that are controlled by a topological charge of the vortex beam. As a result, this method allows one to fabricate single-mode perovskite microlasers operating at room temperature in a broad spectral range (550-800 nm) with Q-factors up to 5500. High-speed fabrication and reproducibility of microdisk parameters, as well as a precise control of their location on a surface, make it possible to fabricate centimeter-sized arrays of such microlasers. Our finding is important for direct writing of fully integrated coherent light sources for advanced photonic and optoelectronic circuitry.

We report a dynamic tuning on coherent light emission wavelengths of single ZnO microwire by using the piezoelectric effect. Owing to the dominant role occupied by the piezoelectric polarization effect in the wurtzite-structure ZnO microwire, the effective dielectric constant (or refraction index) of the gain media was modulated toward an increasing trend by applying a tensile strain, resulting in a shift of the strain-mediated whispering-gallery mode (WGM) lasing at room temperature. Also, the strain required to resolve the spectra in the two operating types of PL and lasing were systematically analyzed and compared. Because of the narrow line width in the lasing mode, the strain-dependent spectral resolution was improved by an order of magnitude, making it feasible for achieving high-precision, ultrasensitive, and noncontact stress sensing. Our results have an important impact on laser modulation, optical communication, and optical sensing technology.

The detection of nanoscale objects is essential for homeland security, environmental monitoring, and early-stage diagnostics. In the past few years, optical sensors have mostly been developed with passive devices such as microcavity and plasmonic nanostructures, which require external laser sources to operate and significantly increase the costs and bulks of sensing systems. To date, the potential of their active counterparts in optical sensors has not been well explored. Herein, a novel and robust mechanism to detect nanoscale objects with lead halide perovskite microlasers is demonstrated. Nanoparticles can be simply detected and sized by measuring the intensity of scattered laser light. Measured and calculated results are presented for the emission properties of a new class of emitters operating in the cavity quantum electrodynamics regime. The structures are based on high-finesse GaAs/AlAs micropillar cavities, each with an active medium consisting of a layer of InGaAs quantum dots (QDs) and the distinguishing feature of having a substantial fraction of spontaneous emission channeled into one cavity mode (high β-factor). This paper demonstrates that the usual criterion for lasing with a conventional (low β-factor) cavity, that is, a sharp non-linearity in the input-output curve accompanied by noticeable linewidth narrowing, has to be reinforced by the equal-time second-order photon autocorrelation function to confirm lasing. The paper also shows that the equal-time second-order photon autocorrelation function is useful for recognizing superradiance, a manifestation of the correlations possible in high-β microcavities operating with QDs. In terms of consolidating the collected data and identifying the physics underlying laser action, both theory and experiment suggest a sole dependence on intracavity photon number. Evidence for this assertion comes from all our measured and calculated data on emission coherence and fluctuation, for devices ranging from light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and cavity-enhanced LEDs to lasers, lying on the same two curves: one for linewidth narrowing versus intracavity photon number and the other for g (2) (0) versus intracavity photon number., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Microgoblet laser pairs are presented for cross-referenced on-chip biomolecular sensing. Parallel readout of the micro-lasers facilitates effective mutual filtering of highly localized refractive index and temperature fluctuations in the analyte. Cross-referenced detection of two different types of proteins and complete chemical transducer reconfiguration is demonstrated. Selective surface functionalization of the individual lasers with high spatial accuracy is achieved by aligned microcontact stamping.

A novel surface functionalization technique is presented for large-scale selective molecule deposition onto whispering gallery mode microgoblet cavities. The parallel technique allows damage-free individual functionalization of the cavities, arranged on-chip in densely packaged arrays. Optical microcavities that confine light in high-Q resonance promise all of the capabilities required for a successful next-generation microsystem biodetection technology. Label-free detection down to single molecules as well as operation in aqueous environments can be integrated cost-effectively on microchips, together with other photonic components, as well as electronic ones. We provide a comprehensive review of the sensing mechanisms utilized in this emerging field, their physics, engineering and material science aspects, and their application to nanoparticle analysis and biomolecular detection. We survey the most recent developments such as the use of mode splitting for self-referenced measurements, plasmonic nanoantennas for signal enhancements, the use of optical force for nanoparticle manipulation as well as the design of active devices for ultra-sensitive detection. Furthermore, we provide an outlook on the exciting capabilities of functionalized high-Q microcavities in the life sciences.
