GNSS-RTK offers numerous advantages and broad prospects in structural dynamic monitoring in civil engineering. However, in practical applications, GNSS-RTK accuracy is susceptible to the monitoring environments, causing actual monitoring accuracy to fall below its calibrated accuracy. This study investigates the monitoring accuracy and spectral characteristics of GNSS-RTK based on stability tests under different environments related to reflection and obstruction conditions (i.e., concrete, grass, an obstructed balcony, and a water area). The findings indicate that in open environments of grass, concrete, and water, the standard deviation (STD) of GNSS-RTK monitored displacement is below 8 mm, its accuracy meeting the specifications of structural health monitoring. In the obstructed balcony environments, GNSS-RTK signals exhibit amplitude jumps, resulting in lower accuracy; however, during non-jump intervals, the STD of monitored displacement is below 10 mm, satisfying the structural health monitoring accuracy requirements. Moreover, the amplitudes of GNSS-RTK displacements in the concrete, grass, and water areas are basically consistent with the calibration accuracy of ±10 mm in the horizontal direction and ±20 mm in the elevation direction, while the amplitudes of GNSS-RTK displacements in the obstructed balcony condition are far greater than the calibration accuracy. The spectral analysis of GNSS-RTK signals reveals that multipath errors in concrete, grass, and obstructed balcony environments are primarily concentrated in the low-frequency range within 0.04 Hz, while the internal white noise of the instrument is widely and evenly distributed across the whole frequency domain. Based on these findings, adaptive methods, such as filter methods and multipath error correction techniques, are proposed for the de-noising of GNSS-RTK background noise.

The chemical mechanical polishing/planarization (CMP) is essential for achieving the desired surface quality and planarity required for subsequent layers and processing steps. However, the aggregation of slurry particles caused by abrasive materials can lead to scratches, defects, increased surface roughness, degradation the quality and durability of the finished surface after milling processes during the CMP process. In this study, ceria slurry was prepared using polymer dispersant with zinc salt of ethylene acrylic acid (EAA) copolymer at different contents of 5, 6, and 7 wt% (denoted as D5, D6, and D7) to minimize particle aggregation commonly observed in CMP slurries. Among them, the D7 sample exhibited smaller particle sizes compared to commercial ceria slurry, which was attributed to the influence of the carboxyl groups (-COOH) of the polyacrylic acid polymer coating the ceria particles. It is believed that the polymer dispersant more effectively adsorbs onto the particle surfaces, increasing electrostatic repulsion between particles and thereby reducing particle size. Furthermore, the stability of the prepared slurry was evaluated under extreme conditions over three months at 25 °C (both open and closed conditions), 4 °C, and 60 °C. The D7 slurry remained stable with no significant changes observed. In addition, the prepared D7 ceria slurry exhibited a slightly higher removal rate (RR) and better uniformity, which can be attributed to the smaller particle sizes of the ceria nanoparticles compared to those in the commercial slurry. This suggests that the colloidal stability of the D7 ceria slurry is superior to that of the commercial ceria slurry.

Nonthermal plasma (NTP) treatment of food presents a new technology for the industry but raises concerns about lipid oxidation due to the presence of reactive species. Considering the critical role of the degree of unsaturation in lipid oxidation, this study investigates NTP-induced oxidation across various unsaturated lipids. These lipids are six oil samples primarily containing one of the following methylesters: oleate, linoleate, linolenate, arachidonate, eicosapentaenoate, and docosahexaenoate. Samples were treated with a nonthermal surface dielectric barrier discharge. Plasma-induced effects were first examined by classical lipid oxidation indicators, such as the peroxide value and p -anisidine value. The specific volatile oxidation products, including hexanal, nonanal, trans-2-hexenal, and methyl 9-oxononanoate, were determined to further elucidate the impact of ozone-related oxidation. Monitoring the production of selected nonvolatile oxidation products, such as epoxy-, oxo-, and hydroxy fatty acid methylesters, confirmed that plasma treatment facilitated the decomposition of lipid hydroperoxide. Generally, the level of plasma-induced oxidation increased in parallel with the unsaturation degree of the studied samples, except for the quantity of individual volatile carbonyls. The long-term effect of NTP treatment was investigated by a stability test, revealing that the oxidative stability depended on the input gas of plasma treatment, the sensitivity of the treated sample, and the presence of antioxidants. Except for the focus on the NTP impact, this study offered a case study of a comprehensive investigation into lipid oxidation.

In the present, whitening products are most popular in the cosmetics market, and nanoemulsions are effective drug delivery systems through the skin. The objective of this study was to investigate multiple nanoemulsion formulations for lightning skin effects. The method of this study was the selection of active compounds based on synergistic tyrosinase inhibition activity, formulation preparation by low and high energy methods, physicochemical property determination, stability test, cell toxicity, and anti-melanogenesis in cell culture. From the results, it was found that tyrosinase inhibition with substrate l-tyrosine from the mixture of curcumin and alpha-arbutin gave the highest activity with an IC 50 of 63.58 ± 4.99 μM, showed a synergistic effect at a CI value of 0.99, and selected these compounds to develop formulations by the low energy method. However, the most formulations prepared by this method were unstable and phase separated, while the high energy method gave the most formulations with good properties, which were selected for further investigation. The best formulation was 2DS which showed internal droplet morphology in the range of nanometers under a TEM microscope. For 3 months stability test, the formulations had no phase separation and gave the slightly changed values of particle size, polydispersity index (PDI), zeta potentials, and pH values. In addition, multiple nanoemulsions also enhanced the stability of active compounds, with the highest percentage of remaining content of curcumin and arbutin at 94.69 and 90.45 %, respectively at 4 °C for 3 months. In a cell culture test on B 16 F 10 , 2DS at 0.05 g/ml gave no cell cytotoxicity and anti-melanogenesis at 57.75 ± 5.74 %, the same potency as kojic acid at a concentration of 20 μg/ml. Dimensionally stable anodes of titanium (Ti) metal coated with mixed metal oxides (MMO) are widely used in several electrochemical applications, especially chloro-alkali electrolysis. Herein, we deposited MMO coatings on Ti substrates in different compositions, namely, (60%RuO 2 -40%TiO 2 ), (60%RuO 2 -30%TiO 2 -10%IrO 2 ), and (60%RuO 2 -20%TiO 2 -15%IrO 2 -5%Ta 2 O 5 ), where RuO 2 has the same percentage ratio in all coatings. The aim was to use these electrodes for chlorine evolution reaction (CER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) applications. Electrochemical characterization of the coated samples was performed to identify the best Ti/MMO electrodes with the highest efficiencies among the various prepared combinations. The role of IrO 2 and Ta 2 O 5 in enhancing corrosion resistance and electrochemical efficacy was up for debate. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses were exploited to determine the surface morphology, chemical composition, crystallinity, surface composition, and chemical states of the acquired coatings. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) method was used to evaluate the apparent activation energy ( E a ) of the deposited MMO. Additionally, the electrochemical performance of our designed coatings was scrutinized by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), a current on-off test, a CV stability test (ST), and an accelerated stability test (AST). Furthermore, linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) was incorporated to assess the catalytic efficacy of the prepared anodes toward the CER in a brine solution of pH 2 and the OER in 1 M H 2 SO 4 . It became clear that the CER and OER incurred almost the same potential value (1.1 V) on both Ti/RuO 2 -TiO 2 and Ti/RuO 2 -TiO 2 -IrO 2 electrodes. However, on the Ti/RuO 2 -TiO 2 -IrO 2 -Ta 2 O 5 anode, there was a 0.2 V potential difference between the CER occurring at 1.1 V and the OER happening at 1.3 V., (© 2024. The Author(s).)

A co-amorphous model drug was prepared by the spray-drying (SD) of probucol (PC) and atorvastatin calcium trihydrate salt (ATO) as low water solubility and co-former components, respectively. The physicochemical properties of the prepared samples were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analysis, thermal analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and dissolution tests. Stability tests were also conducted under a stress environment of 40 °C and 75% relative humidity. The results of PXRD measurements and thermal analysis suggested that PC and ATO form a co-amorphous system by SD. Thermal analysis also indicated an endothermic peak that followed an exotherm in amorphous PC and a physical mixture (PM) of amorphous PC and ATO; however, no endothermic peak was detected in the co-amorphous system. The dissolution profiles for PC in the co-amorphous sample composed of PC and ATO were improved compared to those for raw PC crystals or the PM. Stability tests indicated that the co-amorphous material formed by PC and ATO can be stored for 35 d without crystallization, whereas amorphous PC became crystallized within a day. Therefore, co-amorphization of PC and ATO prepared by SD is considered to be a useful method to improve the solubility of PC in water.

Objective: Despite the studies that have investigated the reliability of Upper Extremity Functional Tests(UEFTs), the reliability of Closed Kinetic Chain Upper Extremity Stability(CKCUES), Seated Medicine Ball Throw(SMBT), push-up(PU) and Unilateral Seated Shot Put(USSP) tests in overhead athletes has yet to be assessed. The objective of this study was to determine both the relative and absolute test-retest reliability of the four UEFTs in female overhead athletes., Methods: Twenty-nine female overhead athletes (age: 26.6 ± 5.29 years) underwent the four UEFTs twice within a three- day interval. The upper limb stability was assessed through PU and CKCUES tests, while the power was assessed though SMBT and USSP tests. The Intraclass Correlation of Coefficient (ICC) was applied to assess the relative reliability. Absolute reliability was determined by calculating the Standard Error of Measurement (SEM) and the Minimal Detectable Change (MDC). Furthermore, Bland-Altman plots were used to detect the agreements between the two measurements., Results: The relative reliability of PU, CKCUES, SMBT, and non-dominant arm USSP tests was excellent (ICC = 0.83, 0.80, 0.91, and 0.83, respectively). SEM was within a range of 1.69 to 1.72 for stability tests and a range of 13.61 to 52.12 for power (based on a 95% confidence interval). The MDC was 4.68 for PU and 4.75 for CKCUES test. At least four repetitions are needed to be considered a real improvement on PU and CKCUES tests. This value was 144.04, in SMBT and 59.03, 37.62 cm (dominant and non-dominant arm, respectively) in USSP tests, which represents the minimum change that must occur to be considered an athlete's progression., Conclusion: This study revealed that both the upper limb stability and power tests have acceptable relative and absolute intra-rater reliability in female overhead athletes. Pulmonary drug transport has numerous benefits. Large surface areas for absorption and limited drug degradation of the gastrointestinal system are provided through the respiratory tract. The administration is painless and easy for the patient. Due to their better stability when compared to liquid formulations, powders have gained popularity among pulmonary formulations. In the pharmaceutical sector, quality assurance and product stability have drawn a lot of attention. Due to this, it was decided to perform a long-term stability study on a previously developed, nanosized dry powder inhaler (DPI) formulation that contained meloxicam. Wet milling was implemented to reduce the particle size, and nano spray-drying was used to produce the extra-fine inhalable particles. The particle diameter was determined using dynamic light scattering and laser diffraction. Scanning electron microscopy was utilized to describe the morphology. X-ray powder diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry were applied to determine the crystallinity. In an artificial lung medium, the in vitro dissolution was studied. The Andersen Cascade Impactor was used to investigate the in vitro aerodynamic characteristics. The stability test results demonstrated that the DPI formulation maintained its essential qualities after 6 and 12 months of storage. Consequently, the product might be promising for further studies and development.

Novel phase Q-carbon thin films exhibit some intriguing features and have been explored for various potential applications. Herein, we report the growth of different Q-carbon structures (i.e., filaments, clusters, and microdots) by varying the laser energy density from 0.5 to 1.0 J/cm 2 during pulsed laser annealing of amorphous diamond-like carbon films with different sp 3 -sp 2 carbon compositions. These unique nano- and microstructures of Q-carbon demonstrate exceptionally stable electrochemical performance by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charging-discharging, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy for energy applications. The temperature-dependent magnetic studies (magnetization vs magnetic field and temperature) reveal the ferromagnetic nature of the Q-carbon microdots. The saturation magnetization and coercive field values decrease from 132 to 14 emu/cc and 155 to 92 Oe by increasing the temperature from 2 to 300 K, respectively. The electrochemical performances of Q-carbon filament, cluster, and microdot thin-film supercapacitors were investigated by two-electrode configurations, and the highest areal specific capacitance of ∼156 mF/cm 2 was observed at a current density of 0.15 mA/cm 2 in the Q-carbon microdot thin film. The Q-carbon microdot electrodes demonstrate an exceptional capacitance retention performance of ∼97.2% and Coulombic efficiency of ∼96.5% after 3000 cycles due to their expectational reversibility in the charging-discharging process. The kinetic feature of the ion diffusion associated with the charge storage property is also investigated, and small changes in equivalent series resistance of ∼9.5% and contact resistance of ∼9.1% confirm outstanding stability with active charge kinetics during the stability test. A high areal power density of ∼5.84 W/cm 2 was obtained at an areal energy density of ∼0.058 W h/cm 2 for the Q-carbon microdot structure. The theoretical quantum capacitance was obtained at ∼400 mF/cm 2 by density functional theory calculation, which gives an idea about the overall capacitance value. The obtained areal specific capacitance, power density, and impressive long-term cyclic stability of Q-carbon thin-film microdot electrodes endorse substantial promise in high-performance supercapacitor applications.

Niclosamide, a widely-used anthelmintic drug, inhibits SARS-CoV-2 virus entry through TMEM16F inhibition and replication through autophagy induction, but the relatively high cytotoxicity and poor oral bioavailability limited its application. We synthesized 22 niclosamide analogues of which compound 5 was found to exhibit the best anti-SARS-CoV-2 efficacy (IC 50  = 0.057 μ M) and compounds 6, 10, and 11 (IC 50  = 0.39, 0.38, and 0.49 μ M, respectively) showed comparable efficacy to niclosamide. On the other hand, compounds 5, 6, 11 contained higher stability in human plasma and liver S9 enzymes assay than niclosamide, which could improve bioavailability and half-life when administered orally. Fluorescence microscopy revealed that compound 5 exhibited better activity in the reduction of phosphatidylserine externalization compared to niclosamide, which was related to TMEM16F inhibition. The development of active and stable photocatalysts for the degradation of volatile organic compounds under visible light is important for efficient light utilization and environmental protection. Titanium dioxide doped with nitrogen is known to have a high activity but it exhibits a relatively low stability due to a gradual degradation of nitrogen species under highly powerful radiation. In this paper, we show that the combination of N-doped TiO 2 with bismuth tungstate prevents its degradation during the photocatalytic process and results in a very stable composite photocatalyst. The synthesis of Bi 2 WO 6 -TiO 2 -N composites is preformed through the hydrothermal treatment of an aqueous medium containing nanocrystalline N-doped TiO 2 , as well as bismuth (III) nitrate and sodium tungstate followed by drying in air. The effect of the molar ratio between the components on their characteristics and photocatalytic activity is discussed. In addition to an enhanced stability, the composite photocatalysts with a low content of Bi 2 WO 6 also exhibit an enhanced activity that is substantially higher than the activity of individual TiO 2 -N and Bi 2 WO 6 materials. Thus, the Bi 2 WO 6 -TiO 2 -N composite has the potential as an active and stable photocatalyst for efficient purification of air.

The unstoppable growth of human population that occurs in parallel with all manufacturing activities leads to a relentless increase in the demand for resources, cultivation land, and energy. In response, currently, there is significant interest in developing strategies to optimize any available resources and their biowaste. While solutions initially focused on recovering biomolecules with applications in food, energy, or materials, the feasibility of synthetic biology in this field has been demonstrated in recent years. For instance, it is possible to genetically modify Saccharomyces cerevisiae to produce terpenes for commercial applications (i.e., against malaria or as biodiesel). But the production process, similar to any industrial activity, generates biowastes containing promising biomolecules (from fermentation) that if recovered may have applications in different areas. To test this hypothesis, in the present study, the lipid composition of by-products from the industrial production of β-farnesene by genetically modified Saccharomyces cerevisiae are studied to identify potentially bioactive compounds, their recovery, and finally, their stability and in vitro bioactivity. The assayed biowaste showed the presence of triterpenes, phytosterols, and 1-octacosanol which were recovered through molecular distillation into a single fraction. During the assayed stability test, compositional modifications were observed, mainly for the phytosterols and 1-octacosanol, probably due to oxidative reactions. However, such changes did not affect the in vitro bioactivity in macrophages, where it was found that the obtained fraction decreased the production of TNF-α and IL-6 in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation.

In the case of capsule-based dry powder inhalation systems (DPIs), the selection of the appropriate capsule is important. The use of gelatin, gelatin-PEG, and HPMC capsules has become widespread in marketed capsule-based DPIs. We aimed to perform a stability test according to the ICH guideline in the above-mentioned three capsule types. The results of the novel combined formulated microcomposite were more favorable than those of the carrier-free formulation for all capsule types. The use of HPMC capsules results in the greatest stability and thus the best in vitro aerodynamic results for both DPI powders after six months. This can be explained by the fact that the residual solvent content (RSC) of the capsules differs. Under the applied conditions the RSC of the HPMC capsule decreased the least and remained within the optimal range, thus becoming less fragmented, which was reflected in the RSC, structure and morphology of the particles, as well as in the in vitro aerodynamic results (there was a difference of approximately 10% in the lung deposition results). During pharmaceutical dosage form developments, emphasis should be placed in the case of DPIs on determining which capsule type will be used for specific formulations.

In this study, Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (LTO) electrodes with different types of water-soluble binders are successfully coated upon aluminum foil. Electrodes containing solely sodium alginate (SA) as a binder or a mixed PVDF/carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) binder show the most stable performance in 1 M LiPF 6 in EC/DMC 1:1 in half cell vs. Li, with respect to cycle stability over 100 cycles at 1 C. The electrodes processed with a mixture of PVDF/SA show considerable fading and slightly worse values for rate capability. Each one of the different binders used is eco-friendly, and the whole processing can be performed without the use of organic solvents. Further advantages covering the whole production and recycling process, as well as safety issues during operation, encourage deeper research in this area.

Spray dried egg white powder (EWP) is traditionally processed by hot room treatment for a prolonged period of time (67 °C for 15 days) to enhance its functionality (foaming and gelling) and to improve microbial safety of EWP. Our prior research demonstrated that radio-frequency (RF) assisted thermal processing can considerably reduce the processing time, without compromising the functional properties of EWP. In this study, continuous RF processing was evaluated for pasteurization of EWP. EWP samples were inoculated with a 5-strain Salmonella cocktail or Enterococcus faecium NRRL B-2354 for the microbial challenge studies. To evaluate the inoculation method, stability and homogeneity tests were conducted for both Salmonella and E. faecium in EWP. Continuous RF heating of EWP was conducted in a 6-kW, 27.12 MHz pilot-scale parallel-plate RF heating system. RF-assisted thermal processing of EWP at 80 °C for 2 h provided >6.69 log reduction for Salmonella. E. faecium was found to be a suitable surrogate for Salmonella due to its higher resistance and similar inactivation kinetics during RF heating of EWP. Salmonella persistence in ground black pepper has caused several foodborne outbreaks and created public concern about the safety of low water activity (a w ) foods. In this study, radiofrequency (RF) processing was evaluated for pasteurization of ground black pepper. Stability and homogeneity tests were done for both Salmonella spp. and E. faecium during moisture equilibration before RF heating to evaluate the inoculation method. Moisture content of samples were conditioned such that the final moisture content after RF heating reached the optimal storage moisture. RF heating was shown to provide more than 5.98 log CFU/g reduction for Salmonella spp. and the reduction of 3.89 log CFU/g for E. faecium with a 130 s of treatment time. The higher thermal resistance of E. faecium indicated its suitability as surrogate for Salmonella spp. during RF heating of ground black pepper. Piperine, total phenolics, volatile compounds, and antioxidant activity were assessed as quality parameters for ground black pepper. In this study, the performance and stability of inverted bulk heterojunction (BHJ) polymer solar cells (PSCs) is enhanced by doping zinc oxide (ZnO) with 0-6 wt % cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) in the sol-gel ZnO precursor solution. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the optimized 3 wt % CTAB-doped ZnO PSCs was increased by 9.07%, compared to a PCE of 7.31% for the pristine ZnO device. The 0-6 wt % CTAB-doped ZnO surface roughness was reduced from 2.6 to 1 nm and the number of surface defects decreased. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy binding energies of Zn 2p 3/2 (1021.92 eV) and 2p 1/2 (1044.99 eV) shifted to 1022.83 and 1045.88 eV, respectively, which is related to strong chemical bonding via bromide ions (Br - ) that occupy oxygen vacancies in the ZnO lattice, improving the PCE of PSCs. The concentration of CTAB in ZnO significantly affected the work function of PSC devices; however, excessive CTAB increased the work function of the ZnO layer, resulting from the aggregation of CTAB molecules. In addition, after a 120-hour stability test in the atmosphere with 40% relative humidity, the inverted device based on CTAB-doped ZnO retained 92% of its original PCE and that based on pristine ZnO retained 68% of its original PCE. The obtained results demonstrate that the addition of CTAB into ZnO can dramatically influence the optical, electrical, and morphological properties of ZnO, enhancing the performance and stability of BHJ PSCs., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Hydrochloride of 10-{2-hydroxy-3-[ N , N -bis-(2-hydroxyethyl)amino]propyl}-2-trifluoromethylphenothiazine (Flu-A) is a analogue of neuroleptic fluphenazine. Flu-A exhibits anti-multidrug resistance, antimutagenic, proapoptopic, and cancer-chemopreventive activities in screening studies. To define identity, quality, and purity of new active substance it is necessary to develop a appropriate analytical method and to establish a degradation profile. Thus, a stability-indicating reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography method was developed and validated for quantitative determination of Flu-A in the presence of its degradation products generated under stress conditions. The compound was subjected to oxidation, photolysis, and degradation in aqueous solutions (neutral and acidic), and solid state according to the International Council for Harmonisation Guidelines. The method was also found to be suitable for intermediate and accelerated studies and for the evaluation of kinetic mechanism of Flu-A degradation in aqueous solutions (pH 5.1-7.5, 353 K). The structures of main potential degradation products were established using high-performance liquid chromatography-Electrospray Ionization-mass spectrometry method.

Atropisomerism can be a complex concept for those who have not encountered it before. This paper discusses the experiments for identification, isolation, thermal stability, toxicity and biotransformation of various species. The identified atropisomers are a series of rotational hindered biaryl, rotational hindered amide, ring flip, and macrocycles atropisomers identified using supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). These technologies offered the advantage of separating various atropoenantiomers, atropdiastereomers and mixed atropisomers with other forms of stereoisomers in both analytical and preparative scales. With ultra-performance convergence chromatography (UPC(2)), the detection of N-oxide atropisomer metabolites can be obtained at very low level thus enabling the observation of conversion in human plasma possible. As the resolution of atropisomers are related to the energy barriers on the rotational axis, a calculated computational protocol was developed to predict the formation. A threshold of 10kcal/mol was established for possible detection of the atropisomers' existence with chromatographic technologies at room temperature or above. The atropisomer with higher energy barrier (>20kcal/mol) were isolated via preparative chromatography and the isolates studied in vitro and in vivo for evaluation of their stability in human plasma. Atropine (AT) and oximes, alone or in combination, have been proven greatly valuable therapeutics in the treatment of organophosphates intoxications. An injectable mixture of AT and obidoxime (OB) was formulated for the administration by automatic self-injector. The aqueous single dose solution contained 275 mg obidoxime chloride and 2.5 mg atropine sulfate per 1 mL (220 mg and 2 mg per 0.8 effective dose, respectively). The final solution was sterilized by filtration through a 0.22 μm pore size filter. This more concentrated solution allowed to use a smaller size and lighter weight cartridge. Quality control tests, including assay of the two major compounds were performed separately, using reversed-phase HPLC methods. Besides, the stability test was carried out according to ICH guideline for the accelerated test. The obtained results showed that the proposed formulation is stable over a period of 2 years after preparation.

The goal of the present study was to compare the drug release properties and stability of the nanoporous silica with different pore architectures as a matrix for improved delivery of poorly soluble drugs. For this purpose, three dimensional ordered macroporous (3DOM) silica with 3D continuous and interconnected macropores of different sizes (200 nm and 500 nm) and classic mesoporous silica (ie, Mobil Composition of Matter [MCM]-41 and Santa Barbara Amorphous [SBA]-15) with well-ordered two dimensional (2D) cylindrical mesopores were successfully fabricated and then loaded with the model drug indomethacin (IMC) via the solvent deposition method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), N2 adsorption, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were applied to systematically characterize all IMC-loaded nanoporous silica formulations, evidencing the successful inclusion of IMC into nanopores, the reduced crystallinity, and finally accelerated dissolution of IMC. It was worth mentioning that, in comparison to 2D mesoporous silica, 3DOM silica displayed a more rapid release profile, which may be ascribed to the 3D interconnected pore networks and the highly accessible surface areas. The results obtained from the stability test indicated that the amorphous state of IMC entrapped in the 2D mesoporous silica (SBA-15 and MCM-41) has a better physical stability than in that of 3DOM silica. Moreover, the dissolution rate and stability of IMC loaded in 3DOM silica was closely related to the pore size of macroporous silica. The colorimetric 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and Cell Counting Kit (CCK)-8 assays in combination with direct morphology observations demonstrated the good biocompatibility of nanoporous silica, especially for 3DOM silica and SBA-15. The present work encourages further study of the drug release properties and stability of drug entrapped in different pore architecture of silica in order to realize their potential in oral drug delivery.
