Accurate estimation of fish stock abundance and exploitability is critical for effective fishery management; however, fishery-dependent data are often affected by temporal and spatial heterogeneities due to the seasonal migration of fish, posing challenges for refined stock management. Previous studies have largely ignored these spatio-temporal dynamics, assuming static populations. This study develops a seasonal spatio-temporal model for Japanese sardine ( Sardinops melanostictus ) in the Northwest Pacific Ocean (NPO), using fishery-dependent data from 2014 to 2022. Seasonal standardized abundance indices (spring, summer, autumn, and an overall average) were generated and integrated with the abundance maximum sustainable yield (AMSY) method for stock assessment. The performance of the AMSY method using a spatio-temporal index was compared with the conventional model-based index, showing the superiority of the spatio-temporal approach. Results indicate a gradual increase in sardine abundance, with a significant shift in the center of gravity toward the northeast. The stock is in a sustainable state with a 94.8-99% probability of recovery. Although the stock is recovering, careful management is advised to prevent future declines. This framework offers a novel approach for assessing distant water and coastal fishery resources.

The China government has introduced many strategies in fisheries management of the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea, the most stringent of which is the summer fishing moratorium. Whether the summer fishing moratorium can restore fishery resources has always been a concern. In this study, we selected eight representative commercial fish species the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea, including Pampus argenteus , Trichiurus lepturus , Scomberomorus niphonius , Ilisha elongata , Thamnaconus modestus , Scomber japonicus , Engraulis japonicus and Larimichthys polyactis , and used the JABBA method to study their historical exploited dynamics and current stock status. We evaluated the effectiveness of the summer fishing moratorium based on the increments of biomass and catch after its implementation and adjustments. P . argenteus and S . niphonius stocks were in the healthy status in 2022, the other six fisheries stocks were overexploited. The summer fishing moratorium had a strong conservation effect, especially after the first implementation in 1995, with the biomass of six fish species increased and the catch of seven species increased, and the total average biomass and catch increments were 21.22 % and 89.72 %. This positive effect was also reflected after the first adjustment in 2003. Although the moratorium duration was continuously extended after the second and third adjustment, the conservation effect was offset by the flooding of fishing efforts immediately after the moratorium. Environmental DNA and RNA (eDNA and eRNA; collectively eNA) analyses have the potential for non-invasive and cost-efficient biomonitoring compared with traditional capture-based surveys. Although various types of eNA particles, including not only mitochondrial eDNA but also nuclear eDNA and their transcripts, are present in the water, performances of eNA detection and quantification have not yet been evaluated sufficiently across multiple mitochondrial and nuclear genes. We conducted a tank experiment with ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis) to compare the detection sensitivity, yields per water sample, and quantification variability between replicates of each type of eNAs. The assay targeting the multi-copy nuclear gene exhibited a higher sensitivity than the assay targeting the mitochondrial gene, and both the target eDNA and eRNA concentrations per water sample were higher for the nuclear gene. On the contrary, variation in eRNA quantifications per sample does not necessarily correspond to that in eDNA, and the intra-sample quantification variability (represented as the CVs between PCR replicates) tended to be larger for eRNA than eDNA. Our results suggested that, even if suitable to the sensitive detection of species occurrence, the use of eRNA particularly derived from multi-copy nuclear gene may not be necessarily appropriate for the reliable assessment of species abundance. A key issue in fishery forecasting is the collection of high-precision subsurface environmental data. A data assimilation method, named gradient-dependent optimal interpolation, was used to construct the near-real-time vertical temperature and salinity structure of a squid fishery ground based on Argo observations. The results were verified by truth-finding comparisons and applied to analyze the relationship between neon flying squid and the subsurface environment in the Kuroshio-Oyashio Confluence Region. The temperature and salinity differences between the constructed results and survey data were less than ±0.5 °C and ±0.02, respectively. Most of the relative analysis errors were less than the observational errors. Statistical analysis revealed that the most suitable temperature for squid was 18-24 °C at the near-surface (<5 m), although the squid can endure a temperature range from 11 to 12 °C at a depth of 300 m. There was an obvious thermocline in the fishery ground, with a thermocline depth of 65 m and a mean strength of approximately 0.10 °C/m. The regressive relationship between vertical temperature (thermocline parameters) and squid catch per unit effort (CPUE) followed the exponential (Gaussian) function. The most suitable salinity was 33.0-34.2 at depths shallower than 300 m.

Large-scale commercial harvesting and climate-induced fluctuations in ocean properties shape the dynamics of marine populations as interdependent drivers at varied timescales. Persistent selective removals of larger, older members of a population can distort its demographic structure, eroding resilience to fluctuations in habitat conditions and thus amplifying volatility in transient dynamics. Many historically depleted marine fish stocks have begun showing signs of recovery in recent decades following the implementation of stricter management measures. But these interventions coincide with accelerated changes in the oceans triggered by increasingly warmer, more variable climates. Applying multilevel models to annual estimates of demographic metrics of 38 stocks comprising 11 species across seven northeast Atlantic ecoregions, this study explores how time-varying local and regional climates contributed to the transient dynamics of recovering populations exposed to variable fishing pressures moderated by management actions. Analyses reveal that progressive reductions in fishing pressure and shifting climate conditions discontinuously shaped rebuilding patterns of the stocks through restorations of maternal demographic structure (reversing age truncation) and reproductive capacity. As the survival rate and demographic structure of reproductive fish improved, transient growth became less sensitive to variability in recruitment and juvenile survival and more to that in adult survival. As the biomass of reproductive fish rose, recruitment success also became increasingly regulated by density-dependent processes involving higher numbers of older fish. When reductions in fishing pressure were insufficient or delayed, however, stocks became further depleted, with more eroded demographic structures. Although warmer local climates in spawning seasons promoted recruitment success in some ecoregions, changing climates in recent decades began adversely affecting reproductive performances overall, amplifying sensitivities to recruitment variability. These shared patterns underscore the value of demographic transients in developing robust strategies for managing marine resources. Large-scale assessments of fish and shellfish populations may be valuable for identifying the impacts of fishing pressure on stocks, but they are rarely possible due to a lack of long-term datasets. In this study, a two-part mixed-effect model for lognormal data was used to obtain historical abundance indices for 16 priority fish and shellfish stocks in the Azores region derived from catch per unit effort (kg per day at sea per vessel) and landing per unit effort (kg per landing per vessel). This data was obtained over the past 30 years under the EC Data Collection Framework and, in addition to information on effort and catch, included details about the fishing operation such as quarter, vessel length and fishing gear. This information was analysed to investigate how abundance indices changed over the years, verify if trends from different data sources were different and, if possible, relate these results to the population and fishery dynamics. The abundance indices derived from both datasets were generally in agreement with each other. Declining trends have been observed for some commercially important species, such as forkbeard Phycis phycis, European conger Conger conger, parrotfish Sparisoma cretense, red scorpionfish Scorpaena scrofa, offshore rockfish Pontinus kuhlii, common spiny lobster Palinurus elephas, splendid alfonsino Beryx splendens and alfonsino B. decadactylus, which is concerning because they are particularly slow-growing, long-lived and have low natural mortality, making them susceptible to overfishing. The exploitation pattern of the invertebrate resource (Oratosquilla oratoria) was investigated in the coastal waters of the Shandong Peninsula, along with the seasonal variation in body length structure, spatial distribution in abundance, and interannual stock status. Results showed that the model with only catch data suggested both stocks in the north and south were suffering from extreme fishing pressure without explicit recovery (North: B 2019 /B MSY  = 0.468 and F 2019 /F MSY  = 1.88 in CMSY. South: B 2019 /B MSY  = 0.349 and F 2019 /F MSY  = 2.59 in CMSY). However, the other two assessment models indicated that the northern stock began to gradually recover as the fishing pressure dropped to an appropriate level after the original overfished status (North: B 2019 /B MSY  = 0.738 and F 2019 /F MSY  = 0.882 in AMSY, B 2019 /B MSY  = 0.831 and F 2019 /F MSY  = 0.774 in BSM. South: B 2019 /B MSY  = 0.164 and F 2019 /F MSY  = 1.44 in AMSY, B 2019 /B MSY  = 0.384 and F 2019 /F MSY  = 1.76 in BSM). Overall, the stock status in the north was better than that in the south. Crustacean fisheries represent an increasingly important contribution to global landings, food security and economic growth, especially in developing countries. However, many productive and valuable crustacean fisheries in Asian countries are characterized by limited data availability, scientific capacity, and fisheries management. Adaptive management frameworks, which use past and emerging information to provide stock status information and management advice, have been touted as particularly applicable for managing capacity- and data-limited fisheries because they employ methods that can improve data collection and result in evaluations of stock and ecosystem status with varying levels of data and capacity. Here, we examined the application of three adaptive fisheries management frameworks (FISHE, FishPath, and DLMtool) to three typical Asian crustacean fisheries that offered contrasting data types and availability, governance, and management and socio-economic contexts. Our aim was to evaluate their suitability for crustacean fisheries and identify particular data and modeling needs and management gaps in these fisheries. We found that while each of the frameworks could effectively recommend suitable monitoring, assessment, and management options given particular contextual factors, there were also limitations with each approach. For example, FISHE took a more wholistic view of ecosystem and fisheries heath, while the other frameworks were more focused on particular aspects of management such as stock assessment (FishPath) and management strategy evaluation (MSE; DLMtool). Applications of each approach also highlighted particular challenges in collecting commercial catch data due to limited monetary investment and poorly designed monitoring programs, which further hindered the implementation of catch and effort limits. The three frameworks also shared common challenges when applied to crustacean species, mainly associated with misalignment with the unique life-histories of crustaceans compared to finfish. By comparing the outputs of the three frameworks, we highlighted their respective strengths and weaknesses and propose an integrated framework that incorporates elements of each of the three frameworks. This integration offers a more comprehensive adaptive roadmap tailored to crustacean fisheries, which involves a mix of qualitative and quantitative approaches that could be applied depending on contextual factors and capacities. The burrowing crustacean decapod Nephrops norvegicus is a significant species in European Atlantic and Mediterranean fisheries. Research over the decades has mainly focused on behavioral and physiological aspects related to the burrowing lifestyle, since animals can only be captured by trawls when engaged in emergence on the seabed. Here, we performed a global bibliographic survey of all the scientific literature retrieved in SCOPUS since 1965, and terminology maps were produced with the VOSviewer software to reveal established and emerging research areas. We produced three term-map plots: term clustering, term citation, and term year. The term clustering network showed three clusters: fishery performance, assessment, and management; biological cycles in growth, reproduction, and behavior; and finally, physiology and ecotoxicology, including food products. The term citation map showed that intense research is developed on ecotoxicology and fishery management. Finally, the term year map showed that the species was first studied in its morphological and physiological aspects and more recently in relation to fishery and as a food resource. Taken together, the results indicate scarce knowledge on how burrowing behavior and its environmental control can alter stock assessment, because of the poor use of current and advanced monitoring technologies.

Marine population modeling, which underpins the scientific advice to support fisheries interventions, is an active research field with recent advancements to address modern challenges (e.g., climate change) and enduring issues (e.g., data limitations). Based on discussions during the 'Land of Plenty' session at the 2021 World Fisheries Congress, we synthesize current challenges, recent advances, and interdisciplinary developments in biological fisheries models (i.e., data-limited, stock assessment, spatial, ecosystem, and climate), management strategy evaluation, and the scientific advice that bridges the science-policy interface. Our review demonstrates that proliferation of interdisciplinary research teams and enhanced data collection protocols have enabled increased integration of spatiotemporal, ecosystem, and socioeconomic dimensions in many fisheries models. However, not all management systems have the resources to implement model-based advice, while protocols for sharing confidential data are lacking and impeding research advances. We recommend that management and modeling frameworks continue to adopt participatory co-management approaches that emphasize wider inclusion of local knowledge and stakeholder input to fill knowledge gaps and promote information sharing. Moreover, fisheries management, by which we mean the end-to-end process of data collection, scientific analysis, and implementation of evidence-informed management actions, must integrate improved communication, engagement, and capacity building, while incorporating feedback loops at each stage. Ayu Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis is a key commercially and culturally important freshwater osmeroid in Japan. Its native population is mostly an amphidromous form migrating between rivers and the sea, and not only native but also artificially landlocked forms are found in lakes and dam reservoirs. This study was undertaken to execute population feasibility and maximum sustainable yield (MSY) analysis of an artificially landlocked form of ayu during January 2018 to December 2020 in the Haidzuka reservoir and its connected Tabusa River, western Japan. FAO-ICLARM Stock Assessment Tools-II and empirical models were employed to estimate the growth function and population parameters. The estimated asymptotic length was 19.50 cm, and the growth coefficient was 0.73 year -1 with a growth performance index of 2.443. The length at first maturity and length at optimum yield were calculated as 10.77 cm and 12.63 cm, respectively, which were lower than the length at first capture (L c  = 13.15 cm), suggesting the mesh size of fishing gear favoring the sustainability of the reproductive potential of this population. The calculated total, natural, and fishing mortalities were 2.45, 1.19, and 1.26 year -1 , respectively. The recruitment pattern was continuous round the year with two pulses where the peak was during July. The current level of exploitation (0.51) was slightly higher than the maximum exploitation rate (0.45), indicating a little overharvesting. The MSY of ayu in the Haidzuka reservoir was estimated to be 211 metric tons if the recommended L c is maintained. Knowledge of the status of the black-lipped pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera populations is critical for the sustainability of the French Polynesia black pearl farming industry. Indeed, this activity relies on collection of spat settling out of the water column, which is inherently related to the abundance of in situ benthic stocks and their reproductive capacities. From surveys performed between 2016 and 2021, we present new stock assessments of natural wild oyster populations from four contrasted pearl farming lagoons (Gambier, Takapoto, Raroia, Takume). Also using Ahe atoll historical data, we first highlight how results vary with the methods (Direct, Zonal and Cokriging) used to scale in situ density measurements to lagoon-scale stocks. Takapoto and Gambier populations were also previously surveyed at least twice since the 1980s, allowing to demonstrate with field data clear changes in stock distributions and population structures. Sea Urchin is not only the crucial keystone species for the coral reef restoration but also it has antimicrobial and anti-cancer activities. This study undertaken to focus on length weight relationship, size fecundity distribution and the estimation of fecundity from the long-spined Sea Urchin, Diadema savignyi at the coastal water of the middle Red Sea, Saudi Arabia. A total of 633 specimen of D. savignyi has been collected from the coastal water of Obhur Creak during the sampling time. In each species, total length (TL) measured as a TW = 11.908 × 0.9995 (R 2  = 0.8975) through the linear regression graph and digital slide callipers and, individual body weight estimated by the digital balance. The natural and fishing mortality 2.02/yr and 0.19/yr respectively has documented from study area. The Asymptotic length value (L∞) (cm) were estimated 7.35 where the growth coefficient (K) was 0.67 from the monthly length-frequency numeric data by using FAO FISAT II software for generating and estimating the population parameters and age. However, the recruitment pattern was observed to be increased gradually with the maximum recruitment peak between the months of September and October 2021. Therefore, the estimation of fecundity varied from 49,226 ova (total length 3.1 cm) to 466,133 ova (total length 6.8). As a result, analysis of the relationship between the absolute fecundity (F) and total length (TL), and between the fecundity and drained body weight (DW), revealed a linear regression model with a positive and significant relationship at p < 0.05. This is the first approach to study the detailed population dynamic of the ecologically and economically important tropical long spine sea urchin ( D. savignyi ) endemic to the region. Sustainable human exploitation of living marine resources stems from a delicate balance between yield stability and population persistence to achieve socioeconomic and conservation goals. But our imperfect knowledge of how oceanic oscillations regulate temporal variation in an exploited species can obscure the risk of missing management targets. We illustrate how applying a management policy to suppress fluctuations in fishery yield in variable environments (prey density and regional climate) can present unintended outcomes in harvested predators and the sustainability of harvesting. Using Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua, an apex predatory fish) in the Barents Sea as a case study we simulate age-structured population and harvest dynamics through time-varying, density-dependent and density-independent processes with a stochastic, process-based model informed by 27-year monitoring data. In this model, capelin (Mallotus villosus, a pelagic forage fish), a primary prey of cod, fluctuations modulate the strength of density-dependent regulation primarily through cannibalistic pressure on juvenile cod survival; sea temperature fluctuations modulate thermal regulation of cod feeding, growth, maturation, and reproduction. We first explore how capelin and temperature fluctuations filtered through cod intrinsic dynamics modify catch stability and then evaluate how management to suppress short-term variability in catch targets alters overharvest risk. Analyses revealed that suppressing year-to-year catch variability impedes management responses to adjust fishing pressure, which becomes progressively out of sync with variations in cod abundance. This asynchrony becomes amplified in fluctuating environments, magnifying the amplitudes of both fishing pressure and cod abundance and then intensifying the density-dependent regulation of juvenile survival through cannibalism. Although these transient dynamics theoretically give higher average catches, emergent, quasicyclic behaviors of the population would increase long-term yield variability and elevate overharvest risk. Management strategies that overlook the interplay of extrinsic (fishing and environment) and intrinsic (life history and demography) fluctuations thus can inadvertently destabilize fish stocks, thereby jeopardizing the sustainability of harvesting. The study describes growth pattern, growth parameter, mortality, recruitment pattern, exploitation rate ( E) and maximum sustainable yield (MSY) to Panna heterolepis from the Bay of Bengal (Bangladesh). About 1223 specimens were collected from commercial fishermen for 12 consecutive months from January to December, 2019. Length-frequency data were analyzed with FAO-ICLARM Stock Assessment Tool. Moreover, our study recorded different water quality and environmental parameters including pH, rainfall, temperature and DO (dissolved oxygen) from the Bay of Bengal. The findings of the study revealed that the allometric co-efficient ( b ) value indicated negative allometric growth (<3.00) for P. heterolepis population. Whereas, the population dynamic parameters showed growth coefficient ( K ) 0.13 year -1 , life-span ( t max ) 3.85 year and growth performance index ( Ø' ) 2.30. Along with this, P. heterolepis was found to grow rapidly with an asymptotic length ( L ∞ ) of 39.08 cm. We found that the natural mortality ( M = 0.44 year -1 ) rate was almost similar with fishing mortality ( F = 0.42 year -1 ). Consequently, the standing stock was not quite sustainable with the existing fishing strategy. Furthermore, the maximum allowable exploitation rate ( E max = 0.471) was lower than the recorded exploitation rate ( E = 0.490). Subsequently, overfishing is the most focal threat to the wild stock. The recruitment pattern was almost continuous throughout sampling period. Finally, the MSY was assessed at 10234.47 metric tons. Additionally, the environmental parameters denoted that the ecosystem was in a balanced condition for the wild population. Little is known about intraspecific variation within the deacon rockfish ( Sebastes diaconus ), a recently described species found in the northeast Pacific Ocean. We investigated population structure among fish sampled from two nearshore reefs (Siletz Reef and Seal Rock) and one offshore site (Stonewall Bank) within a <50-km 2 area off the Oregon coast. Fish from the three sample sites exhibited small but statistically significant differences based on genetic variation at >15,000 neutral loci, whether analyzed independently or classified into nearshore and offshore groups. Male and females were readily distinguished using genetic data and 92 outlier loci were associated with sex, potentially indicating differential selection between males and females. Morphometric results indicated that there was significant secondary sexual dimorphism in otolith shape, but further sampling is required to disentangle potential confounding influence of age. This study is the first step toward understanding intraspecific variation within the deacon rockfish and the potential management implications. Since differentiation among the three sample sites was small, we consider the results to be suggestive of a single stock. The present paper contains two datasets; i) the growth band count (GBC) of mud crab, Scylla olivacea collected from Setiu Wetlands, Terengganu coastal water, East coast of Peninsular Malaysia and ii) the increment sizes of body weight (BW) and carapace width (CW) of immature S. olivace after molting. The datasets presented here were associated with the research articles entitled i) "Study on carapace width growth band counts relationship of orange mud crab, S. olivacea (Herbst, 1796) from Terengganu Coastal Waters, Malaysia" (Hasyima-Ismail et al. 2017) [1] and ii) "Relationship between the carapace width and body weight increments and the confirmation of Stage 1 ovary after the molting of immature orange mud crabs, S. olivacea (Herbst, 1796), in captivity" (Amin-Safwan et al. 2019-2020) [2], and provided here as raw data of Supplementary materials. Raw datasets for GBC in the wild were generated by examination of the thin cross sectioning process of the gastric mill of S. olivacea . The GBC were measured for each individual crab wherein band counts ranged from 1 to 3. The analysis provides evidence that the GBC of the crabs can be determined through both mesocardiac and zygocardiac ossicles. This data is of importance to researchers for estimation of stock assessment and improvement of fisheries management to further improve policy. For the BW-CW increment data, a total of 135 immature crabs were sampled from Setiu Wetlands, Terengganu, Malaysia, and were introduced to limb autotomy technique in order to induced molt. Crabs were reared until successful molting and immediately prior to hardened shell, before final measurement of body weight and carapace width determination. Management procedures (MPs) based on data-limited methods (DLMs) recently developed to give management advices for data-limited stocks worldwide are scarce or yet to be implemented on freshwater species. In this study, case studies (CSs) were developed using length-frequency data (LFD) of common carp species harvested from Dianshan Lake to estimate life-history parameters from existing methods. These CSs were later used to examine their influences when tested with various MPs under scenarios when operating models (OMs) were subjected to observation and estimation uncertainties. The results after management strategy evaluation (MSE) was run for various defined OMs showed that three MPs emerged best for providing managing advice. For high yield to be maintained during short-term periods, MinlenLopt1 suggested the smallest length at full retention (sLFR) to be 42.11 cm; while Slotlim and matlenlim2 suggested that to maintain biomass and stable spawning biomass (SBMSY) and also avoid overfishing from occurring in this fishery, sLFR should be 56.1 cm. Values given by these MPs allowed the removal of species that spawned at least once. Also, life-history parameters derived from CS4 presented the best results, being more reliable in presenting better inputs for effective management of the said fishery.

Crustaceans, such as crab, lobster, prawn, and Antarctic krill, have formed a vast and commercially valuable fishery globally. Although the importance and scale of these crustacean fishe-ries are increasing, the suitable and effective methods for stock assessment and management of crustacean fisheries are urgent to be improved compared to other fisheries. We reviewed and evaluated four kinds of stock assessment methods for assessing crustacean fishery, including the surplus production model, delay-difference model, the depletion model, and size-structured model. We described the application of those models in stock assessment of crustacean fishery, and briefly summarized the assumptions and data needed in these models. We further compared the advantages and disadvantages of those models. In addition, the assumptions of the models, the estimation method of the parameters, and the general solution of uncertainty were analyzed. Finally, the future direction and prospect of crustacean stock assessment were discussed.

The Natural Mortality coefficient ( M ) is a key parameter for stock assessments. The need to establish age-specific natural mortality coefficients is widely recognized because M decreases rapidly over the early stages of the life cycle until it reaches a stable M value around the age-at-maturity. The aim of this study was to estimate M during the life cycle of the sea cucumber Isostichopus badionotus , a species under heavy fishing exploitation in the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. Coefficients M at age were estimated using two models: The Gnomonic Interval Model (GIM) and the Chen & Watanabe model. Two different scenarios were simulated considering early and late age-at-maturity. Estimated M values using the GIM model for the early maturity scenario were 2.15 to 2.35 year -1 (interquartile range) for the juvenile stage and 0.39 to 0.43 year -1 for the adult stage; for the late maturity scenario were 0.65 to 0.71 year -1 for the juvenile stage and 0.68 to 0.74 year -1 for the adult stage. The Chen & Watanabe model M estimates for juvenile stage were between 0.85 and 2.23 year -1 and 0.39 and 2.23 year -1 for the early and late maturity scenarios respectively; for adult stage were between 0.97 and 0.21 year -1 and 0.62 and 0.43 year -1 respectively. The GIM estimated high natural mortality rates during larval stages. The disappearance of larger individuals and the decrease in individual body condition suffered by Atlantic cod Gadus morhua in the eastern Baltic during the past two decades can be expected to affect the stock reproductive output. To investigate this, female G. morhua were collected during the spawning and pre-spawning period in 2015-2016. The current individual potential fecundity (F P ) of eastern Baltic G. morhua was estimated and analysed in relation to total length (L T ) and indices of nutritional status such as body condition (K) and hepato-somatic index (I H ) using generalized linear models. In addition, the current prevalence of atresia and its potential relation to K were investigated. Moreover, a calibration curve to estimate F P from oocyte diameter, based on the autodiametric oocyte counting method, was established for the first time for eastern Baltic G. morhua and can be used for future fecundity studies on this stock. The results showed that F P was mainly positively related to fish length, but K and I H also contributed significantly to the variation in F P . The model predicted that fish with K = 1·2 have a F P 51% higher than fish of the same L T with K = 0·8. The prevalence of fecundity regulation by atresia was 5·8%, but it was found only in fish in the pre-spawning maturity stage and with low K. This study investigated maturation and spawning of Patagonian toothfish Dissostichus eleginoides in the Heard Island and McDonald Islands (HIMI) fishery on the Kerguelen Plateau in the Indian Sector of the Southern Ocean based on gonads and otoliths collected between 2004 and 2015 and using histological analyses and calibration of macroscopic staging criteria. Dissostichus eleginoides at HIMI spawn throughout the austral late autumn and winter months of May-August and spawning activity is concentrated on slopes along the west and south of the plateau around HIMI at depths of 1500-1900 m. Comparison between histological analyses and macroscopic gonad staging indicated that many fish that had spawned, as indicated by the presence of post-ovulatory follicles, returned to a resting stage which was macroscopically indistinguishable from maturing fish. Furthermore, the occurrence of females of all size classes with low gonado-somatic index and low macroscopic gonad stage during the spawning season suggested that a proportion of mature females did not spawn every year. Age-at-maturity estimates, based on the assumption that fish of macroscopic stages ≥2 were mature, decreased between the 2004-2009 and 2010-2015 periods for both sexes. The magnitude of this temporal variation in age at maturity, however, varied between gear types and fishing depths and variable sampling regimes probably influenced these variations. The Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center deploys the Modular Optical Underwater Survey System (MOUSS) to estimate the species-specific, size-structured abundance of commercially-important fish species in Hawaii and the Pacific Islands. The MOUSS is an autonomous stereo-video camera system designed for the in situ visual sampling of fish assemblages. This system is rated to 500 m and its low-light, stereo-video cameras enable identification, counting, and sizing of individuals at a range of 0.5-10 m. The modular nature of MOUSS allows for the efficient and cost-effective use of various imaging sensors, power systems, and deployment platforms. The MOUSS is in use for surveys in Hawaii, the Gulf of Mexico, and Southern California. In Hawaiian waters, the system can effectively identify individuals to a depth of 250 m using only ambient light. Overfishing is a primary cause of population declines for many shark species of conservation concern. However, means of obtaining information on fishery interactions and mortality, necessary for the development of successful conservation strategies, are often fisheries-dependent and of questionable quality for many species of commercially exploited pelagic sharks. We used satellite telemetry as a fisheries-independent tool to document fisheries interactions, and quantify fishing mortality of the highly migratory shortfin mako shark ( Isurus oxyrinchus ) in the western North Atlantic Ocean. Forty satellite-tagged shortfin mako sharks tracked over 3 years entered the Exclusive Economic Zones of 19 countries and were harvested in fisheries of five countries, with 30% of tagged sharks harvested. Our tagging-derived estimates of instantaneous fishing mortality rates ( F = 0.19-0.56) were 10-fold higher than previous estimates from fisheries-dependent data (approx. 0.015-0.024), suggesting data used in stock assessments may considerably underestimate fishing mortality. Additionally, our estimates of F were greater than those associated with maximum sustainable yield, suggesting a state of overfishing. This information has direct application to evaluations of stock status and for effective management of populations, and thus satellite tagging studies have potential to provide more accurate estimates of fishing mortality and survival than traditional fisheries-dependent methodology., (© 2017 The Author(s).)

Fisheries management systems around the world are highly diverse in their design, operation, and effectiveness at meeting objectives. A variety of management institutions, strategies, and tactics are used across disparate regions, fishing fleets, and taxonomic groups. At a global level, it is unclear which particular management attributes have greatest influence on the status of fished populations, and also unclear which external factors affect the overall success of fisheries management systems. We used expert surveys to characterize the management systems by species of 28 major fishing nations and examined influences of economic, geographic, and fishery-related factors. A Fisheries Management Index, which integrated research, management, enforcement, and socioeconomic attributes, showed wide variation among countries and was strongly affected by per capita gross domestic product (positively) and capacity-enhancing subsidies (negatively). Among 13 management attributes considered, three were particularly influential in whether stock size and fishing mortality are currently in or trending toward desirable states: extensiveness of stock assessments, strength of fishing pressure limits, and comprehensiveness of enforcement programs. These results support arguments that the key to successful fisheries management is the implementation and enforcement of science-based catch or effort limits, and that monetary investment into fisheries can help achieve management objectives if used to limit fishing pressure rather than enhance fishing capacity. In addition to being an academic endeavour, the practical purpose of conducting age and growth studies on fishes is to provide biological data to stock assessment scientists and fisheries managers so they may better understand population demographics and manage exploitation rates. Age and size data are used to build growth models, which are a critical component of stock assessments. Though age determination of elasmobranchs in the northeast Pacific Ocean (NEP) began in the 1930s, the field has evolved substantially in recent years, allowing scientists to incorporate age data into assessments for more species than ever before. Owing to the highly diverse biology of this group of fishes, each species has its own set of challenges with regard to age determination. Age determination methods typically rely on semicalcified hard structures that form regular growth patterns; however, the structure selected and preparation method used is often species specific. New staining techniques have improved the ability to assess age and improve ageing precision for some species, and advances in microchemical methods have allowed for independent means of estimating age and validating age determination accuracy. Here we describe current age determination methods for NEP elasmobranchs. While the library of available techniques is increasing, there are still some NEP species for which reliable ageing methods have yet to be defined; we discuss these challenges and potential avenues of future research. In this work, we reported the complete mitochondrial genome sequence of the Schizothorax nukiangensis Tsao for the first time. The complete mtDNA genome sequence of S. nukiangensis Tsao was 16 585 bp in length, which contains 22 transfer RNA genes, 2 rRNA genes, 13 protein-coding genes, an origin of light-strand replication (OL) and a control region (D-Loop). The overall base composition of the mitogenome was calculated to be 29.6% for A, 27.0% for C, 17.9% for G and 25.5% for T. The complete mitogenome of the S. nukiangensis Tsao can provide an important data set for further studies on population history, molecular systematics, phylogeography and stock assessment.

In this study, the complete mitochondrial DNA of Schizothorax gongshanensis was determined. The complete genome is 16,591 bp in length which contains 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, 2 rRNA genes, an origin of light-strand replication (O L ) and a control region (D-Loop). The nature and intensity of intraspecific competition can vary greatly among taxa, yet similarities in these interactions can lead to similar population dynamics among related organisms. Variation along the spectrum of intraspecific competition, with contest and scramble competition as endpoints, leads to vastly different responses to population density. Here we investigated the diversity of intraspecific competition among fish species, predicting that functional forms of density-dependent reproduction would be conserved in related taxa. Using a hierarchical model that links stock-recruitment parameters among populations, species, and orders, we found that the strength of overcompensation, and therefore the type of intraspecific competition, is tightly clustered within taxonomic groupings, as species within an order share similar degrees of compensation. Specifically, species within the orders Salmoniformes and Pleuronectiformes exhibited density dependence indicative of scramble competition (overcompensation) while the orders Clupeiformes, Gadiformes, Perciformes, and Scorpaeniformes exhibited dynamics consistent with contest competition (compensation). Maximum potential recruitment also varied among orders, but with less clustering across species. We also tested whether stock-recruitment parameters correlated with maximum body length among species, but found no strong relationship. Freshwater eels are important animals because they have a unique catadromous life history and are used as food resources. European, American and Japanese eel populations now are considered to be outside the safe biological limits and are seriously threatened with extinction. Therefore, the European eel was recently categorised as critically endangered by the European Union and the United Nations. One of the reasons for the drastic decline in eel populations is overfishing, which has caused a high demand for eel aquaculture; eel aquaculture completely depends on wild juveniles, and in contrast to animals, artificial propagation has not yet succeeded for the eels. Therefore, commercial eel industries are now considering tropical eels as possible replacement for European and Japanese eels to compensate for declining stocks. In this study, I attempt to examine the present status of the biology and stock of tropical eels. However, useful scientific research and information on the biology and stock assessments of tropical eels are lacking, a situation quite different from that for other temperate freshwater eels, which have been well studied for several decades with trends and recruitment patterns being on record. Nevertheless, the present tropical eel catch has been reported as being less than half that of 20 years ago. The present trends in eel stocks and utilization for human consumption suggest that all eel populations will decline to numbers that fall outside safe biological limits and will be seriously threatened with extinction without protection and conservation from strict enforcement of local and international laws.

A stock assessment of blue swimming crabs, Portunus pelagicus was conducted with crab gill nets and collapsible crab traps at Kung Krabaen Bay, in the eastern Gulf of Thailand, from 2008 to 2009. Several key indicators show that P. pelagicus population is in crisis. Fishing mortality shows an increase to 4.14. The exploitation rate is 0.71, higher than the optimal value of 0.38. The size of the mature females has also decreased from 8.10±0.39 cm to 7.52±1.14 cm. The average fecundity is 0.572×10(6)±0.261×10(6) eggs per batch, and the sex ratio (male:female) is 1:0.92. Based on these results, a sustainable management program for P. pelagicus was proposed as follows: (i) closing the bay during the spawning season, (ii) restoration of the Enhalus acoroides seagrass beds, (iii) restocking crab larvae in the bay and (iv) educating and networking all stakeholders to develop a better understanding of the ecology of the crab to support sustainable fishery management in Kung Krabaen Bay.

Sex, age and sexual maturation are key biological parameters for aspects of life history and are fundamental information for assessing demographic changes and the reproductive viability and performance of natural populations under exploitation pressures or in response to environmental influences. Much of the information available on the reproductive condition, length at sexual maturity and sex determinations of endangered species has been derived from direct examination of the gonads in dead animals, either intentionally or incidentally caught, or from stranded individuals. However, morphological data, when used alone, do not provide accurate demographic information in sexually monomorphic marine vertebrate species (e.g. sharks, sea turtles, seabirds and cetaceans). Hormone determination is an accurate and non-destructive method that provides indirect information about sex, reproductive condition and sexual maturity of free-ranging individuals. Correlations between sex steroid concentrations and biochemical parameters, gonadal development and state, reproductive behaviour and secondary external features have been already demonstrated in many species. Different non-lethal approaches (e.g. surgical and mark-recapture procedures), with intrinsic advantages and disadvantages when applied on free-ranging organisms, have been proposed to asses sex, growth and reproductive condition. Hormone determination from blood samples will generate valuable additional demographic information needed for stock assessment and biological conservation.

Cephalopods are a relatively small class of molluscs (~800 species), but they support some large industrial scale fisheries and numerous small-scale, local, artisanal fisheries. For several decades, landings of cephalopods globally have grown against a background of total finfish landings levelling off and then declining. There is now evidence that in recent years, growth in cephalopod landings has declined. The commercially exploited cephalopod species are fast-growing, short-lived ecological opportunists. Annual variability in abundance is strongly influenced by environmental variability, but the underlying causes of the links between environment and population dynamics are poorly understood. Stock assessment models have recently been developed that incorporate environmental processes that drive variability in recruitment, distribution and migration patterns. These models can be expected to improve as more, and better, data are obtained on environmental effects and as techniques for stock identification improve. A key element of future progress will be improved understanding of trophic dynamics at all phases in the cephalopod life cycle. In the meantime, there is no routine stock assessment in many targeted fisheries or in the numerous by-catch fisheries for cephalopods. There is a particular need for a precautionary approach in these cases. Assessment in many fisheries is complicated because cephalopods are ecological opportunists and stocks appear to have benefited from the reduction of key predator by overexploitation. Because of the complexities involved, ecosystem-based fisheries management integrating social, economic and ecological considerations is desirable for cephalopod fisheries. An ecological approach to management is routine in many fisheries, but to be effective, good scientific understanding of the relationships between the environment, trophic dynamics and population dynamics is essential. The depauperate marine ecosystems of the Hawaiian Archipelago share a high proportion of species with the southern and western Pacific, indicating historical and/or ongoing connections across the large oceanic expanse separating Hawaii from its nearest neighbors. The rate and direction of these interactions are, however, unknown. While previous biogeographic studies have consistently described Hawaii as a diversity sink, prevailing currents likely offer opportunities for larval export. To assess interactions between the remote reefs of the Hawaiian Archipelago and the species rich communities of the Central and West Pacific, we surveyed 14 nuclear microsatellite loci (nDNA; n = 857) and a 614 bp segment of mitochondrial cytochrome b (mtDNA; n = 654) in the Yellow Tang ( Zebrasoma flavescens ). Concordant frequency shifts in both nDNA and mtDNA reveal significant population differentiation among three West Pacific sites and Hawaii (nDNA F ' CT = 0.116, mtDNA ϕ CT = 0.098, P < 0.001). SAMOVA analyses of microsatellite data additionally indicate fine scale differentiation within the 2600 km Hawaiian Archipelago ( F ' SC = 0.026; P < 0.001), with implications for management of this heavily-exploited aquarium fish. Mismatch analyses indicate the oldest contemporary populations are in the Hawaiian Archipelago (circa 318,000 y), with younger populations in the West Pacific (91,000 - 175,000 y). Estimates of Yellow Tang historical demography contradict expectations of Hawaii as a population sink, and instead indicate asymmetrical gene flow, with Hawaii exporting rather than importing Yellow Tang larvae.
