A low-dispersion objective-prism survey for low-redshift emission-line galaxies (ELGs) is being carried out by the University Complutense de Madrid with the Schmidt telescope at the German-Spanish Observatory of Calar Alto (Almeria, Spain). A 4 deg full aperture prism, which provides a dispersion of 1950 A/mm, and IIIaF emulsion combination has been used to search for ELGs selected by the presence of H-alpha emission in their spectra. Our survey has proved to be able to recover objects already found by similar surveys with different techniques and, what is more important, to discover new objects not previously cataloged. A compilation of descriptions and positions, along with finding charts when necessary, is presented for 160 extragalactic emission-line objects. This is the first list, which contains objects located in a region of the sky covering 270 sq deg in 10 fields near alpha = 0(sup h) and delta = 20 deg.

The active close binary U Cep has been monitored in the ultraviolet, using IUE, during 1.25 orbital cycles. The emission spectrum at the bottom of the primary total eclipse confirms earlier suggestions of an unexpected absence of the Hell 1640 A line. Stronger than expected emission in some other lines like NV, CII, CIV or AlIII, indicative of hot plasma, points out that some important differences still remain between the active components of RS CVn-type binaries and the mass-losing components of semidetached Algols. Simultaneous X-ray measurements, carried out with GINGA, indicated a low upper limit flux in the observed energy range (1 to 10 keV). A comparison with other binary systems or isolated stars is discussed in order to understand the obtained results.

We report on a series of ultraviolet spectroscopic observations made with the IUE satellite, which sampled critical outburst stages of the soft X-ray transient Nova Muscae 1991. Continuum light curves, and a multi-epoch line analysis are presented. In addition, a single epoch optical-UV spectra obtained with the HST/FOS is discussed. The optical-UV continuum fits approximately the 'canonical' fv varies as V exp 1/3 power low expected for thermal emission from steady state accretion disk. The emission line spectrum contains prominent high ionization lines of C IV and N V. Weaker lines are seen at intermittent epochs, including some of lower ionization. The derivation of galactic reddening which has significant implications for distance estimates is discussed. Comparisons with previous SXT sources are considered.

We present and discuss the low resolution absolute calibration for the LWP camera of the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE). The calibration, implemented in routine processing of LWP low resolution images on December 22, 1987 at both GSFC and VILSPA IUE ground stations, is based on the last set of Intensity Transfer Function (ITF 2) obtained in September 1984 and on a substantially larger amount of IUE observations of standard stars than used for the preliminary calibration by Cassatella & Harris (1983) based on the earlier ITF (ITF 1). The new ITF and the associated calibration provide upgraded performances in flux accuracy, signal-to-noise ratio and linearity with respect to the earlier LWP ITF1 which was implemented in processing LWP data obtained in the period from October 16, 1983 until December 21, 1987.

During the all-sky survey conducted by the Rosat Wide Field Camera, the binary flare star system BY Draconis was monitored with coverage by the IUE satellite far-UV and optical observations and by the Rosat X-ray telescope for part of the time. A stellar flare was detected in all four wavebands. This is the first unambiguous EUV detection of a flare and one of the widest simultaneous wavelength-range coverages obtained. The peak luminosity and total energy of this flare in the photon energy range 0.08-0.18 keV are comparable with the values obtained for a number of flares integrated over a larger energy range by Exosat satellite observations in 1983-86. It is concluded that radiation in the EUV carries away a substantial fraction of the total flare energy.

On May 22, 1989, the Japanese Ginga Team discovered a new x ray source that was cataloged as GS 2023+338. This source was subsequently identified as coincident in position with a previously known nova cataloged as V404 Cygni. Its last recorded outburst was in 1938 when it rose to about 12th mag. Spectroscopic data were obtained and confirmed the nature of the outburst. Additional ground based data were obtained by us at CTIO and the VLA. The x ray behavior of this object was reported to be very unusual and it reached a peak of about 17 crab about one week after discovery. Since then it has varied widely in magnitude at all wavelengths at which it has been studied. A brief summary of the observations that were obtained up to the time of the meeting and shortly thereafter is presented.
