The technology advancements that will be necessary to implement the atmospheric observation systems are considered. Upper and lower atmospheric air quality and meteorological parameters necessary to support the air quality investigations were included. The technology needs were found predominantly in areas related to sensors and measurements of air quality and meteorological measurements.

The technology advancements needed to implement the atmospheric observation satellite systems for air quality research were identified. Tropospheric measurements are considered. The measurements and sensors are based on a model of knowledge objectives in atmospheric science. A set of potential missions and attendant spacecraft and sensors is postulated. The results show that the predominant technology needs will be in passive and active sensors for accurate and frequent global measurements of trace gas concentration profiles.

Two types of experiments were performed with a correlation interferometer on-board a Bell Jet Ranger 206 Helicopter. The first consisted of simultaneous ground- and air-truth measurements as the instrumented helicopter passed over the Cheverly site. The second consisted of several measurement flights in and around the national capital air quality control region (Washington, D.C.). The correlation interferometer data, the infrared Fourier spectrometer data, and the integrated altitude sampling data showed agreement within the errors of the individual measurements. High values for CO were found from the D.C. flight data to be reproducible and concentrated in areas of stop-and-go traffic. It is concluded, that pollutants at low altitudes are detectable from an air-borne platform by remote correlation interferometry and that the correlation interferometer measurements agree with ground- and air-truth data.

The experiment is designed to obtain data for the investigation of mechanisms by which CO is removed from the earth's atmosphere. The approach uses an orbiting platform to remotely map global CO concentrations and determine vertical CO profiles using a correlation interferometer measurement technique. The instrument is capable of measuring CO over the range of expected atmospheric burdens and of measuring trace atmospheric constituents.

A multigas correlation interferometer, based on the previously developed and tested COPE instrument, has been designed and fabricated and is presently undergoing laboratory testing. The CIMATS instrument has the capability to remotely measure densities of selected gaseous atmospheric species in the spectral range 2 to 2.5 and 4 to 10 microns. The sensor has been designed for both nadir viewing and earth limb viewing. As presently configured the sensor is capable of measuring ammonia, nitrous oxide, and carbon monoxide in the nonthermal infrared spectral region and carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide in the thermal infrared. Other gaseous species can be measured by inclusion of additional narrow band filters.

The sensors were examined for adaptability to shuttle by reviewing pertinent information regarding sensor characteristics as they related to the shuttle and Multimission Modular Spacecraft environments. This included physical and electrical characteristics, data output and command requirements, attitude and orientation requirements, thermal and safety requirements, and adaptability and modification for space. The sensor requirements and characteristics were compared with the corresponding shuttle and Multimission Modular Spacecraft characteristics and capabilities. On this basis the adaptability and necessary modifications for each sensor were determined. A number of the sensors were examined in more detail and estimated cost for the modifications was provided.

The observed lack of a high rate of growth in global CO concentration implies that there is some sink mechanism for destroying the CO as rapidly as it is being produced. A program is described which is intended to develop both the experiment concept and the remote sensor required to measure atmospheric CO with sufficient accuracy to locate the sink, whether it be at the earth's surface or in the upper atmosphere. The program calls for the development of a remote sensor which can look for surface sinks by mapping the vertical CO burden in the atmosphere on a daily basis, and which can look for an upper atmospheric sink by means of measurements of total CO in a horizontal path through the limb of the earth's atmosphere, using the sun as the source.

Design and development of Sisyphus meteoroid detection system for interplanetary spacecraft

The feasibility of measuring atmospheric carbon monoxide from a remote platform using the correlation interferometry technique was considered. It has been determined that CO data can be obtained with an accuracy of 10 percent using this technique on the first overtone band of CO at 2.3 mu. That band has been found to be much more suitable than the stronger fundamental band at 4.6 mu. Calculations for both wavelengths are presented which illustrate the effects of atmospheric temperature profiles, inversion layers, ground temperature and emissivity, CO profile, reflectivity, and atmospheric pressure. The applicable radiative transfer theory on which these calculations are based is described together with the principles of the technique.

Two correlation interferometers, a breadboard model and an engineering model, have been designed, constructed, and tested for the measurement of selected atmospheric trace species. Test results showed that errors of less than 10% are attainable for atmospheric amounts of carbon monoxide and methane measured at 2.3 microns. Based on these results a program has been undertaken to determine the feasibility of measuring other trace species by correlation interferometry. It shown that in addition to carbon monoxide and methane, carbon dioxide, water vapor, ammonia, nitric oxide, nitrous oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide can also be accurately measured with this instrument.

The breadboard model of the correlation interferometer for the Carbon Monoxide Pollution Experiment has been designed, fabricated, and tested. Laboratory, long-path, and atmospheric tests which were performed show the technique to be a feasible method for obtaining a global carbon monoxide map and a vertical carbon monoxide profile and similar information is readily obtainable for methane as well. In addition, the technique is readily applicable to other trace gases by minor instrumental changes. As shown by the results and the conclusions, it has been determined that CO and CH4 data can be obtained with an accuracy of 10% using this technique on the spectral region around 2.3 microns.

A correlation interferometer has been developed for the measurement of carbon monoxide and methane at 2.35 micrometers in the troposphere and in the stratosphere. This instrument has been tested in laboratory tests, solar-looking outdoor tests, and downward-looking airplane-based tests. The aircraft tests were flown on a Falcon fanjet provided by The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing over both polluted and unpolluted regions of North America. The results of these various tests are discussed. Based on the results obtained for carbon monoxide and methane, a study was undertaken to investigate the feasibility of measuring other atmospheric trace species by correlation interferometry. Results of the feasibility study for carbon dioxide, water vapor, ammonia, nitrous oxide, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and several hydrocarbons are presented.
