Throughout the history of human spaceflight, crewmembers have experienced various in-flight medical conditions including illness and injury. Planned missions to the Moon and Mars will require capabilities to maintain the health of future space travelers. Mass, power, and volume available in the vehicles and habitats for these missions will be severely constrained; resupply of resources will be limited or non-existent, as will opportunities for evacuation to Earth. Furthermore, ground-based support will be hampered by communication latencies and blackouts. These vehicle and mission constraints will necessitate a medical system that has been efficiently planned, providing on-board procedural guidance in addition to a variety of medical devices and consumable resources. Medical capabilities required for the diagnosis and treatment of potential medical conditions during future spaceflight missions may include real-time health monitoring, medical imaging, and biomarker analyses ( e.g., blood or urine). Terrestrial medicine shares these needs, thus many of these medical capabilities could likely be satisfied by Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) devices and methodologies; however, in some cases the unique space environment and increased mission duration will drive the need to modify technologies and the way care is provided. NASA’s Human Research Program (HRP) Exploration Medical Capability (ExMC) Element and Mars Campaign Office’s Exploration Medical Integrated Product Team (XMIPT) are working together to decrease medical risk during exploration missions. Flight-tested medical diagnostic and treatment technologies are necessary to effectively manage medical conditions relevant to exploration missions while meeting vehicle constraints, integrating with medical decision-support tools, and enabling increasingly Earth-independent operations. Several projects have leveraged the ISS as a testbed for exploration, including 1) i n- situ blood analysis, 2) medical inventory, 3) intravenous fluid generation, and 4) autonomous medical procedure guidance. Management of several in-flight medical conditions, such as bacterial and viral infections and acute radiation syndrome, is dramatically improved with ability to assess blood cell populations, electrolytes, and metabolites. I n December 2020 and January 2021 ExMC performed an ISS technology demonstration (Tech Demo) of the HemoCue® WBC DIFF analyzer (HemoCue, Brea, CA), a COTS device that was modified to enable functionality in a spaceflight environment. This Tech Demo marked the first time that hematology measurements were successfully performed real-time in microgravity. Also modified and demonstrated was the reusable Handheld Electrolytes and Lab Technology for Humans (rHEALTH) ONE analyzer (rHEALTH, Bedford, MA), which uses flow cytometry and sheath-based hydrodynamic focusing methodologies. The rHEALTH ONE ISS Tech Demo in May 2022 demonstrated test results obtained in-flight matched those on the ground. NASA currently relies on crew self-reporting to manage and maintain medical inventory on ISS.The ability to maintain an accurate inventory becomes more critical during long duration missions since the crew will need to be increasingly autonomous in finding and utilizing medical items, including those scenarios when alternative treatments need to be considered due to limited or no resupply. HRP’s Medical Consumables Tracking (MCT) project was developed by ZIN Technologies, Inc. (Cleveland, OH), and demonstrated real-time tracking of medical supplies aboard the ISS between December 2016 and July 2018. The MCT system design utilized Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) technology to perform automated inventory and was installed in the Crew Health Care System (CHeCS) Resupply Stowage Rack (RSR). The challenge of limited shelf life, exacerbated by the lack of resupply opportunities, affects a plethora of medical system components including consumables, pharmaceuticals, and intravenous (IV) fluid. In 2010, ExMC funded ZIN Technologies, Inc. (Cleveland, OH), to develop the Intravenous Fluid Generation (IVGEN) system. IV fluids were successfully generated with IVGEN using the potable water supply on ISS during ISS Expedition 23. The XMIPT is in the process of developing a miniaturized version of the original IVGEN hardware for a future Tech Demo aboard the ISS. Current ISS medical operations rely heavily on preflight training and real-time remote guidance, both of which become impractical or impossible for exploration missions. The primary goal of the Autonomous Medical Officer Support (AMOS) Software Tech Demos on ISS was to confirm telemedical proof-of-concept for autonomous medical imaging in an operational setting. This novel software tool shifts emphasis from preflight training and real-time remote guidance to in-flight just-in-time instruction, a new and necessary paradigm for crew medical autonomy. AMOS introduces a novel, streamlined skill management concept for exploration missions featuring comprehensive training and guidance modules for ultrasound examinations using the ISS Ultrasound 2 (a modified GE Vivid-q™; General Electric HealthCare, Chicago, IL). With no prior crew training or remote guidance, two Tech Demos on the ISS (April 2020 and June 2022) resulted in high quality, clinically useful image sets. We will provide a review of historical, current, and planned medical devices and technologies considered for inclusion within future spaceflight medical systems and summarize hardware development activities and medical device tech demos conducted on the ISS.

The data from the MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) spacecraft have revealed several surprising characteristics about the surface of Mercury, leading to its classification as a geochemical endmember among the terrestrial planets. Some of these features include elevated abundances of up to 3 wt% S, C enrichment as high as 4 wt% over the local mean in low reflectance materials (LRM), Na up to 5 wt% at high northern latitudes, and Fe abundances typically lower than 2 wt% [e.g., 1–4]. The S and Fe concentrations have been used to infer that Mercury’s igneous history evolved under highly reduced oxygen fugacity conditions between 2.6 and 7.3 log10 units below the iron-wüstite buffer [e.g., 5], which is more reducing than any other terrestrial planet in the solar system [e.g., 6]. This highly reduced nature has important consequences for the differentiation and thermal/magmatic evolution of Mercury. While the immense amount of data collected by MESSENGER revealed Mercury as a geochemical endmember, this new knowledge gained raised additional questions that necessitate continued exploration of the planet. Fortunately, BepiColombo launched in October of 2018, and this joint ESA/JAXA dual-orbiter spacecraft is the most ambitious effort yet attempted to explore Mercury [e.g., 7]. Looking beyond BepiColombo, there are major aspects of Mercury’s geochemical character and evolution for which significant knowledge gaps can be dramatically improved with data acquired from the planet’s surface via in situ landed science.

Mariner 10 provided our first closeup reconnaissance of Mercury during its three flybys in 1974 and 1975. MESSENGER’s 2011–2015 orbital investigation enabled numerous discoveries, several of which led to substantial or complete changes in our fundamental understanding of the planet. Among these were the unanticipated, widespread presence of volatile elements (e.g., Na, K, S); a surface with extremely low Fe abundance whose darkening agent is likely C; a previously unknown landform—hollows— that may form by volatile sublimation from within rocks exposed to the harsh conditions on the surface; a history of expansive effusive and explosive volcanism; substantial radial contraction of the planet from interior cooling; offset of the dipole moment of the internal magnetic field northward from the geographic equator by ~20% of the planet’s radius; crustal magnetization, attributed at least in part to an ancient field; unexpected seasonal variability and relationships among exospheric species and processes; and the presence in permanently shadowed polar terrain of water ice and other volatile materials, likely to include complex organic compounds. Mercury’s highly chemically reduced and unexpectedly volatile-rich composition is unique among the terrestrial planets and was not predicted by earlier hypotheses for the planet’s origin. As an end-member of terrestrial planet formation, Mercury holds unique clues about the original distribution of elements in the earliest stages of the Solar System and how planets (and exoplanets) form and evolve in close proximity to their host stars. The BepiColombo mission promises to expand our knowledge of this planet and to shed light on some of the mysteries revealed by the MESSENGER mission. However, several fundamental science questions raised by MESSENGER’s pioneering exploration of Mercury can only be answered with in situ measurements from the planet’s surface.

Space weathering is an important process that affects the surfaces of airless bodies, such as (101955) Bennu. The consequences of this process include physical and chemical changes to materials on the surface, which in turn change spectral characteristics, especially in the visible to near infrared wavelengths. These spectral changes are not the same across airless bodies because the changes are dependent on the composition and mineralogy of the surface and even location within the Solar System. The main space weathering products responsible for these spectral changes are submicroscopic particles, which consist of two types, nanophase and microphase particles, and affect visible to near-infrared reflectance spectra differently. Nanophase particles are particles <33 nm in size and occur in agglutinates and within glassy patinas around regolith particles. In contrast, microphase particles are >33 nm in size and are present only within agglutinates. These spectral differences are best illustrated by lunar samples. In lunar soils, the nanophase and microphase particles consist of metallic iron. With increasing abundance of nanophase iron particles in a regolith, its spectrum exhibits a lower overall reflectance in the visible to near infrared, weakened absorption bands, and a reddened continuum slope. In contrast, an increasing abundance of microphase iron only causes decreases in reflectance and not reddening. Because of the spectral differences introduced by these two types of particles, it is possible to model the nanophase and microphase particle abundances of a surface through the radiative transfer technique. Beyond the Moon, the composition of the nanophase and microphase particles can include other phases because the mineralogy of the surfaces of other planetary bodies is different. For example, the nanophase and microphase particles may consist of amorphous carbon (Mercury) and sulfides (Itokawa). The mineralogy of Bennu is consistent with carbonaceous chondrites. From a number of space weathering experiments on CM chondrites, the likely nanophase and microphase mineral phases on Bennu includes iron, magnetite, and sulfides (i.e., pentlandite and troilite). The goal of this work is to input the predicted nanophase and microphase compositions for Bennu into the radiative transfer technique. Next, we use this technique to model the OSIRIS-REx Visible Infrared Spectrometer (OVIRS) so that we can model the nanophase and microphase particle abundances across the surface. This will result in space weathering maps of the surface of Bennu, which are useful for understanding the degree of space weathering across the surface and its relationship to various regions and geological features.

The surfaces of airless bodies experience solar wind irradiation and micrometeorite impacts, a process collectively known as space weathering. These mechanisms alter the chemical composition, microstructure, and optical properties of surface materials and considerable work has been done to understand this phenomenon in lunar and ordinary chondritic materials. However, ongoing sample return missions Hayabusa2 to asteroid Ryugu and OSIRIS-REx to asteroid Bennu have prompted the need to study the effects of space weathering on hydrated, organic-rich materials, especially in the context of early results. Understanding space weathering of these samples is critical for properly interpreting remote sensing data during asteroid encounters, for sample site selection, and for the eventual study of returned samples. We can better understand space weathering of carbonaceous materials by simulating these processes in the laboratory. Recent experiments have shown that the changes in spectral characteristics of carbonaceous chondrites are not consistent among experiments, suggesting additional work is needed before these results can inform our understanding of spectral variations on asteroidal surfaces. Similarly, substantial work remains to characterize the chemical and microstructural effects of these processes in order to correlate these features with spectral changes. Here, we build on our previous work, presenting new results of the pulsed laser irradiation of the Murchison (CM2) meteorite to simulate micrometeorite impacts and the progressive space weathering of carbonaceous surfaces.

The chemical composition, microstructure, and optical properties of grains on the surfaces of airless bodies are predominantly altered by micrometeorite impacts and solar wind irradiation. These processes drive space weathering and result in the formation of features including chemically-altered, amorphous grain rims, Fe nanoparticles (npFe), and vesiculated grain textures. These characteristics have been identified in returned samples from the surfaces of the Moon and asteroid Itokawa. In order to advance our understanding of the formation of these microstructural and chemical features in returned samples, we have simulated space weathering processes for a variety of materials via laboratory experiments. These experiments include ion irradiation to simulate solar wind exposure and laser irradiation and in situ heating to simulate micrometeorite impacts. While these experiments have provided considerable insight into the formation mechanisms of many space weathering features, they are predominantly static and typically performed separately. Here we present results from the simulated space weathering of olivine grains via He irradiation and dynamic heating, both performed in situ inside the transmission electron microscope (TEM). These experiments allow for the real-time observation of chemical and microstructural changes resulting from the superposed effects of ion irradiation and pulsed heating.

Space weathering alters the surfaces of airless planetary bodies via irradiation from the solar wind and micrometeorite impacts. These processes modify the microstructure, chemical composition, and spectral properties of surface materials, typically resulting in the reddening (increasing reflectance with increasing wavelength), darkening (reducing albedo), and attenuation of characteristic absorption features in reflectance spectra. In lunar samples, these changes in optical properties are driven by the production of reduced nanophase Fe particles (npFe). Our understanding of space weathering has largely been based on data from the Moon and, more recently, near-Earth S-type asteroids. However, the environment at Mercury is significantly different, with the surface experiencing intense solar wind irradiation and higher velocity micrometeorite impacts. Additionally, the composition of Mercury’s surface varies significantly from that of the Moon, including a component with very low albedo known as low reflectance material (LRM) which is enriched with up to 4 wt.% carbon over the local mean. Our understanding of how carbon phases, including graphite, are altered as a result of these processes is limited.

Surfaces of airless planetary bodies are exposed to micrometeorite bombardment and solar wind irradiation which alter the microstructural, compositional, and optical properties of regoliths over time. These processes are collectively known as space weathering, and they complicate the interpretation of remote sensing data and the subsequent characterization of airless surfaces. Within the next 5 years, NASA’s OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, Regolith Explorer) and JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency)’s Hayabusa2 missions will return samples from C-type asteroids Bennu and Ryugu, respectively. Compared to the Moon and S-type asteroids, our understanding of the space weathering of C-complex asteroids is limited. In order to maximize scientific return from remote sensing data and to prepare for the analysis of returned samples from these missions, we must better understand the effects of space weathering on hydrated, organic-rich materials. We can do so by simulating these processes in the laboratory. In this study, we simulate solar wind exposure through ion irradiation of the CM2 carbonaceous chondrite Murchison - a suitable analog for C-complex asteroids. Here, we present coordinated analyses of a sample before and after ion irradiation.

We are using innovative FIB techniques to prepare samples of planetary materials for different types of coordinated analyses using ion microprobes, synchrotron beamlines, and specialized transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. In these cases, the FIB sample preparation is the critical step in enabling these specialized analyses. We discuss several examples below utilizing the FEI Quanta3D instrument at the NASA Johnson Space Center. Trace element analyses utilizing synchrotron x-ray fluorescence. The trace element content of mineral grains in comet dust provides important clues on their formation and processing in the early solar system. We preformed coordinated analyses of a comet dust particle that had been prepared using ultramicrotomy for TEM analysis. Following the TEM analyses, we extracted a 70 nm thick section from a region of the carbon (C) film of the TEM grid, for additional analyses. A carbon ring ~2-3 μm thick was deposited on top of the C film using the FIB. The C film on the outer rim of the ring was milled away using various patterns to uniformly release the stresses on the film, preventing rupture and collapse, and was attached to the micromanipulator needle. We then isolated the ring completely and transferred the section to a silicon sample holder for analysis using the HXN (hard X-ray nanoprobe) beamline at NSLSII at Brookhaven National Lab. Coordinated Analyses of Presolar Grains. Rare sub-m presolar grains that originate in evolved stars and supernovae, occur in primitive astromaterials and are identified by their exotic isotopic compositions. Coordinated analyses of these grains using NanoSIMS, TEM, and other techniques on the same grain is enabled by innovative FIB sample preparation. In order to obtain subsequent isotopic analyses of Mg and Fe, contributions from surrounding grains were minimized. We precisely deposited a protective cap of Pt on top of the grain to preserve the grain of interest and then milled away about 5 μm diameter of the surrounding material. Following the isotopic analyses, the spindle was extracted and thinned to electron transparency for TEM microstructural analyses. In situ heating TEM experiments on lunar samples. We extracted a FIB thin section from Apollo 17 lunar rock 76015. To avoid ion-beam damage, e-beam deposition was used to deposit the first 500 nm of the C strap, followed by ion beam-assisted deposition of ~3 μm carbon. We performed an ex situ lift-out of the section and placed the section on one of the elements of a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) - specialized heating substrate and attached the section to the substrate by depositing small C straps with the FIB. The heating chips utilize silicon nitride windows to support the samples and provide uniform heating while enabling TEM imaging. The heating chip was loaded into a Hitachi “Blaze” heating holder and analyzed using a Hitachi HF5000 at the University of Arizona.

Laboratory studies of lunar apatite [Ca5(PO4)3(F,Cl,OH)] have been important for determining the volatile inventory of the interior and the roles volatiles played during the magmatic evolution of the Moon. It has been suggested that high-Ti mare basalts sample volatiles from a distinct reservoir in the lunar mantle. However, there is still debate surrounding the crystallization and post-crystallization history of apatite in those basalts. This information is required before we can use apatite to characterize the abundance or isotopic composition of volatiles in melts or magmatic source regions. Our goal is to investigate the mineral chemistry, crystal structure, and volatile inventory of phosphates in high-Ti basalts from Apollo 11, which will allow us to determine the crystallization history of apatite in these rocks and identify any potential secondary processes that have changed the volatile composition that apatite acquired from the melt.

Grains on the surfaces of airless bodies experience irradiation from solar energetic particles and melting, vaporization and recondensation processes associated with micrometeorite impacts. Collectively, these processes are known as space weathering and they affect the spectral properties, composition, and microstructure of material on the surfaces of airless bodies, e.g. Recent efforts have focused on space weathering of carbonaceous materials which will be critical for interpreting results from the OSIRIS-REx and Hayabusa2 missions targeting primitive, organic-rich asteroids. In addition to returned sample analyses, space weathering processes are quantified through laboratory experiments. For example, the short-duration thermal pulse from hypervelocity micrometeorite impacts have been simulated using pulsed-laser irradiation of target material e.g. Recent work however, has shown that pulsed-laser irradiation has variable effects on the spectral properties and microstructure of carbonaceous chondrite samples. Here we investigate the spectral characteristics of pulsed-laser irradiated CM2 carbonaceous chondrite, Murchison, including the vaporized component. We also report the chemical and structural characteristics of specific mineral phases within the meteorite as a result of pulsed-laser irradiation.

Space weathering processes alter the chemical composition, microstructure, and spectral characteristics of material on the surfaces of airless bodies. The mechanisms driving space weathering include solar wind irradiation and the melting, vaporization and recondensation effects associated with micrometeorite impacts e.g., [1]. While much work has been done to understand space weathering of lunar and ordinary chondritic materials, the effects of these processes on hydrated carbonaceous chondrites is poorly understood. Analysis of space weathering of carbonaceous materials will be critical for understanding the nature of samples returned by upcoming missions targeting primitive, organic-rich bodies (e.g., OSIRIS-REx and Hayabusa 2). Recent experiments have shown the spectral properties of carbonaceous materials and associated minerals are altered by simulated weathering events e.g., [2-5]. However, the resulting type of alteration i.e., reddening vs. bluing of the reflectance spectrum, is not consistent across all experiments [2-5]. In addition, the microstructural and crystal chemical effects of many of these experiments have not been well characterized, making it difficult to attribute spectral changes to specific mineralogical or chemical changes in the samples. Here we report results of a pulsed laser irradiation experiment on a chip of the Murchison CM2 carbonaceous chondrite to simulate micrometeorite impact processing.

Space weathering alters the spectral properties of airless body surface materials by redden-ing and darkening their spectra and attenuating characteristic absorption bands, making it challenging to characterize them remotely [1,2]. It also causes a discrepency between laboratory analysis of meteorites and remotely sensed spectra from asteroids, making it difficult to associate meteorites with their parent bodies. The mechanisms driving space weathering include mi-crometeorite impacts and the interaction of surface materials with solar energetic ions, particularly the solar wind. These processes continuously alter the microchemical and structural characteristics of exposed grains on airless bodies. The change of these properties is caused predominantly by the vapor deposition of reduced Fe and FeS nanoparticles (npFe(sup 0) and npFeS respectively) onto the rims of surface grains [3]. Sample-based analysis of space weathering has tra-ditionally been limited to lunar soils and select asteroidal and lunar regolith breccias [3-5]. With the return of samples from the Hayabusa mission to asteroid Itoka-wa [6], for the first time we are able to compare space-weathering features on returned surface soils from a known asteroidal body. Analysis of these samples will contribute to a more comprehensive model for how space weathering varies across the inner solar system. Here we report detailed microchemical and microstructal analysis of surface grains from Itokawa.

The chemistry, microstructure and optical properties of grains on the surfaces of airless bodies are continu-ously modified due to their interactions predominantly with solar energetic ions and micrometeorite impacts. Collectively known as space weathering, this phenomenon results in a discrepancy between remotely sensed spectra from asteroids and those ac-quired directly from meteorites. The return of pristine samples from the asteroid Itokawa provides insight into surface processes on airless bodies and will help in correlating remote sensing data with laboratory analysis of meteorites. Samples and Methods: We examined Itokawa samples RA-QD02-0042-01 and RA-QD-02-0042-02, ultramicrotomed sec-tions of a singular grain prepared by the Hayabusa sample cura-tion team. We analyzed these slices using a 200 keV JEOL 2010F transmission electron microscope (TEM) at Arizona State Uni-versity and a 200 keV JEOL 2500SE TEM at NASA JSC. Both field emission TEMs are equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometers (EDS) and scanning TEM (STEM) detectors. Results and Discussion: TEM observations reveal that the sectioned grain predominantly consists of a single crystal of low-Ca orthopyroxene, with subsidiary smaller regions of olivine, Fe-Ni sulfide, and Fe-Ni metal. EDS-spectrum imaging and high-resolution TEM (HRTEM) show local, nanocrystalline regions of the outermost 2 to 5 nm of the pyroxene are composed of an Fe-Mg-S-rich and Si- and O-depleted layer that is underlain by a 2- to 5-nm thick amorphous zone enriched in Si. These layers occur in multiple microtome slices and have uniform thicknesses. We also observe localized 'islands' of material on the surface of the pyroxene which HRTEM imaging indicates are amorphous and EDS measurements show are compositionally heterogeneous. A 10- to 60-nm thick partially amorphous zone occurs below the compositionally distinct rim. While this this zone is associated with the compositionally heterogeneous outer layer, it also occurs as a local stand-alone feature on the exterior rim of the grain. Ar-eas of the pyroxene grain rim also exhibit a vesicular texture. The TEM data indicate a complex history of space weather-ing for samples RA-QD02-0042-01 and -02. The outermost layer of nanocrystalline material with varied composition is consistent with previously suggested [3-4] chemical and structural pro-cessing by solar wind ions, with a possible additional role for im-pact vapor deposition [3-4]. The amorphous and compositionally distinct islands on the surface of this grain, similar to lunar glasses, suggest formation through vapor deposition via micrometeor-ite impact events. In comparison, the amorphization and vesicula-tion textures are likely a product of radiation damage from the solar wind. The depth and degree of amorphization, in conjunction with model calculations, will help provide an upper limit on exposure time for these particles.

The morphology, mineralogy, chemical composition and optical properties of lunar soils show distinct correlations as a function of grain size and origin [1,2,3]. In the <20 m size fraction, there is an increased correlation between lunar surface properties observed through remote sensing techniques and those attributed to space weathering phenomenae [1,2]. Despite the establishment of recognizable trends in lunar grains <20 in size [1,2,3], the size fraction < 10 m is characterized as a collective population of grains without subdivision. This investigation focuses specifically on grains in the <1 m diameter size fraction for both highland and mare derived soils. The properties of these materials provide the focus for many aspects of lunar research including the nature of space weathering on surface properties, electrostatic grain transport [4,5] and dusty plasmas [5]. In this study, we have used analytical transmission and scanning transmission electron microscopy (S/TEM) to characterize the mineralogy type, microstructure and major element compositions of grains in this important size range in lunar soils.
