El artículo presenta un análisis de la recepción de la obra de Federico García Lorca en Italia durante las dos primeras décadas después de su muerte. A pesar de la dificultad histórica y bibliográfica de la época, varios hispanistas e hispanófilos italianos, incluyendo traductores, críticos y escritores, jugaron un papel importante en la introducción de la obra de Lorca en Italia. En el estudio se mencionan los primeros comentarios y reseñas de las obras lorquianas en la prensa italiana, así como entrevistas que se centraron tanto en su trabajo como director teatral como en su personalidad (de entre los primeros receptores, cabe destacar la labor de Levi y Marconi). Estas páginas, publicadas en revistas y diarios, ofrecen una visión temprana de la recepción de Lorca en Italia, pese a la hostilidad del gobierno italiano de la época. En una época en la que las traducciones predominaron sobre la interpretación crítica, se presta atención sobre todo a las figuras de tres hispanistas y comparatistas: Carlo Bo, Vittorio Bodini y Oreste Macrí. Los tres traducen y editan parte sustancial de la obra del poeta granadino, haciéndola accesible al público lector italiano a partir de la década de los cuarenta. Más allá de su labor traductográfica, los tres maestros hispanistas son los principales promotores también de la interpretación de la poesía, el teatro y la prosa de Lorca en Italia, convirtiéndose el autor español en uno de los escritores españoles contemporáneos más leídos y publicados en el país transalpino., The article presents an analysis of the reception of Federico García Lorca’s work in Italy during the first two decades after his death. Despite the historical and bibliographical difficulty of the time, several Italian hispanists and hispanophiles, including translators, critics and writers, played an important role in the introduction of Lorca’s work in Italy. The study mentions the first comments and reviews of Lorca’s works in the Italian press, as well as interviews that focused both on his work as a theater director and on his personality (among the first recipients, it is worth highlighting the work of Levi and Marconi). These pages, published in magazines and newspapers, offer an early vision of Lorca’s reception in Italy, despite the hostility of the Italian government of the time. In a period in which translations predominated over critical interpretation, attention is paid above all to the figures of three Hispanists and comparatists: Carlo Bo, Vittorio Bodini and Oreste Macrí. The three translated and edited a substantial part of the work of the poet, making it accessible to the Italian reading public from the 1940s onwards. Beyond their translation work, the three Hispanist masters are also the main promoters of the interpretation of Lorca’s poetry, theater and prose in Italy, making the Spanish author one of the most read and published contemporary Spanish writers in the transalpine country.

Habitat mapping is crucial for understanding habitat connectivity and for spatial planning, environmental management, conservation, and targeted research, including long-term change monitoring. However, such information has been lacking for many Dutch Caribbean islands, especially regarding marine habitats. This study used 2144 georeferenced images from different surveys to develop habitat models predicting the distribution of habitat types within the Saba Bank National Park. The habitat models link environmental factors to species or habitat occurrence, enabling predictions in unsurveyed areas with known covariates. Machine learning techniques (Random Forests, Gradient Boosting, and weighted K Nearest Neighbor) were applied to interpret and predict ten habitat types over the Bank. Three models were created for each technique: 1) utilizing only geographic coordinates; 2) incorporating covariables such as depth, distance to the edge of the Bank, Topographic Position Index (TPI), and Terrain Ruggedness index (TRI); 3) a combination of the previous two models. All models performed well, accurately predicting habitat types between 67 and 74% of the georeferenced images. However, the most natural representation occurred with models combining geographic and covariate variables. Predicted habitats include coral reef, patch reef, gorgonian reef, sargassum fields, cyanobacteria-dominated fields, Lobophora fields, Neogoniolithon- Lyngbya habitat, other macroalgae fields, sand with a mix of species, and bare sand. Habitat distribution appears to be related to the main currents in the area and depth, with coral reefs occurring mainly along the southern and eastern edge of the Bank, with gorgonians and other soft corals dominating there the shallow areas. Macroalgae, including fields of Sargassum, dominate the back-reef area. Extensive sand plains dominate the center of the Bank, and along the north-western and northern edge of the Bank, between 40 and 60m depth Lobophora fields

Large language models (LLMs) trained on general domain corpora showed remarkable results on natural language processing (NLP) tasks. However, previous research demonstrated LLMs trained using domain-focused corpora perform better on specialized tasks. Inspired by this pivotal insight, we developed INDUS, a comprehensive suite of LLMs tailored for the Earth science, biology, physics, heliophysics, planetary sciences and astrophysics domains and trained using curated scientific corpora drawn from diverse data sources. The suite of models include: (1) an encoder model trained using domain-specific vocabulary and corpora to address natural language understanding tasks, (2) a contrastive-learning-based general text embedding model trained using a diverse set of datasets drawn from multiple sources to address information retrieval tasks and (3) smaller versions of these models created using knowledge distillation techniques to address applications which have latency or resource constraints. We also created three new scientific benchmark datasets namely, CLIMATE-CHANGE-NER (entity-recognition), NASA-QA (extractive QA) and NASA-IR (IR) to accelerate research in these multi-disciplinary fields. Finally, we show that our models outperform both general-purpose encoders (RoBERTa) and existing domain-specific encoders (SciBERT) on these new tasks as well as existing benchmark tasks in the domains of interest.

One of the most urgent challenges for European academic and cultural institutions is to promote an intelligent use of materials and resources available on the web, by implementing best practices of web archiving, and building scientifically valid databases which can have a positive social impact. This paper will present the theoretical and methodological framework of Eredità Culturali, an ongoing project that aims at answering this challenge by focusing on the Florentine cultural heritage. The first stage of Eredità Culturali consisted in surveying similar initiatives within the European research landscape and examining national and international cataloguing models and standards to build a data entry prototype that interacts with other systems. Hence, a flexible and open-access web platform has been designed to validate, preserve and consult cultural information from disparate data sets into a single archive. A geo-referenced information system has also been developed, in which four databases designed by the Department's research groups of Geography, Archaeology, Performing Arts and History of the Book will converge and make sound data available for both non-academic and professional audiences. The analytical investigation is integrated with original ways of dissemination that will facilitate historical connections between different cultural heritages and legacies.&nbsp

Large-scale asymmetries (i.e. lopsidedness) are a common feature in the stellar density distribution of nearby disk galaxies both in low- and high-density environments. In this work, we characterize the present-day lopsidedness in a sample of 1435 disk-like galaxies selected from the TNG50 simulation. We find that the percentage of lopsided galaxies (10%-30%) is in good agreement with observations if we use similar radial ranges to the observations. However, the percentage (58%) significantly increases if we extend our measurement to larger radii. We find a mild or lack of correlation between lopsidedness amplitude and environment at z=0 and a strong correlation between lopsidedness and galaxy morphology regardless of the environment. Present-day galaxies with more extended disks, flatter inner galactic regions and lower central stellar mass density (i.e. late-type disk galaxies) are typically more lopsided than galaxies with smaller disks, rounder inner galactic regions and higher central stellar mass density (i.e. early-type disk galaxies). Interestingly, we find that lopsided galaxies have, on average, a very distinct star formation history within the last 10 Gyr, with respect to their symmetric counterparts. Symmetric galaxies have typically assembled at early times (~8-6 Gyr ago) with relatively short and intense bursts of central star formation, while lopsided galaxies have assembled on longer timescales and with milder initial bursts of star formation, continuing building up their mass until z=0. Overall, these results indicate that lopsidedness in present-day disk galaxies is connected to the specific evolutionary histories of the galaxies that shaped their distinct internal properties., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS, 23 pages (including the Appendix), 23 figures

Deltas, as areas with both land and water, have always been attractive places to live because they offer good conditions for agriculture, and because navigation was for a long time important for transport. These reasons apply also to the Bangladesh delta, the most important food system for the region. However, the food production system is experiencing (increasing) pressures that threaten food security. The Bangladesh delta has become more vulnerable to development and risks related to climate change, including floods, cyclones, drought, heat stress and salinity intrusion, threatening humans and livestock and reducing agricultural and aquacultural potential. Due to changes in the area of sea level rise, temperature and precipitation changes, salinisation, water quality problems, drying out and flooding, population pressure and urbanisation, agricultural production is becoming more uncertain. Other threats to food security are the prevalence of both stunting and obesity, while food safety standards are rather low due to the usage of (agro) chemicals during or after harvest. A main concern specifically observed in southwestern Bangladesh is the salinisation of water and soil, which threatens the entire food production system of the region. The question is how to deal with this in the future in order to ensure the livelihoods of farmers and to ensure that sufficient, safe and nutritious food is available for the growing and increasingly urban population, while at the same time ensuring that, as protein demand increases and agricultural land decreases, the environment is not compromised and climate change is suitably addressed. This report provides an analysis of the food system in Bangladesh, with an emphasis on the southwestern delta, and, after that, begins by describing possible transition pathways. The pathways explored are i) focus on mangroves in combination with shrimp cultivation; ii) improved water and soil management; iii) climate adaptive livestock managemen, Delta’s, waar land en water samenkomen, zijn altijd al aantrekkelijke plaatsen geweest om te leven. Ze bieden goede omstandigheden voor landbouw met gemakkelijk toegankelijke transportmogelijkheden over water. Dit is ook zo in de Bangladesh delta: de delta is een belangrijke bron voor voedsel in de regio. Echter, vanwege toegenomen ontwikkelings- en klimaat gerelateerde risico’s zoals overstromingen, cyclonen, droogte- en hittestress en zoutintrusie zijn delta’s ook in toenemende mate kwetsbare gebieden. Levens van mensen en vee en de productiviteit van de landbouw en aquacultuur worden hierdoor bedreigd. Door veranderingen in zeespiegelstijging, temperatuur en neerslag, verzilting, waterkwaliteitsproblemen, droogte en overstroming, bevolkingsdruk en verstedelijking, staat de landbouwproductie onder druk. Andere factorendie voedselzekerheid bedreigen zijn onder- en overgewicht, en ook voedselveiligheid is een bron van zorg vanwege beperkte handhaving van regelgeving terwijl er wel chemicaliën in de landbouw worden gebruikt. In het zuidwesten van Bangladesh is verzilting van zowel bodem als water een bijzonder aandachtspunt, wat de voedselproductie van de regio ernstig bedreigd. De vraag is hoe hier mee om te gaan, nu en in de toekomst. Er zijn, naast voldoende voedsel produceren,nog drie doelen: 1. inkomensmogelijkheden voor boeren veilig stellen, 2. gezond voedsel produceren, terwijl vanwege een toenemende stedelijke bevolking de verwachting is dat de vraag naar eiwitten zal toenemen terwijl het landbouwareaal zal afnemen; en 3. tegelijkertijd milieuvervuiling en klimaatverandering het hoofd bieden. In het onderzoek wordt hiervoor een voedselsysteemanalyse gedaan, die in dit rapport wordt beschreven, met nadruk op de zuidwestelijke delta van Bangladesh. Transforming documents into machine-processable representations is a challenging task due to their complex structures and variability in formats. Recovering the layout structure and content from PDF files or scanned material has remained a key problem for decades. ICDAR has a long tradition in hosting competitions to benchmark the state-of-the-art and encourage the development of novel solutions to document layout understanding. In this report, we present the results of our \textit{ICDAR 2023 Competition on Robust Layout Segmentation in Corporate Documents}, which posed the challenge to accurately segment the page layout in a broad range of document styles and domains, including corporate reports, technical literature and patents. To raise the bar over previous competitions, we engineered a hard competition dataset and proposed the recent DocLayNet dataset for training. We recorded 45 team registrations and received official submissions from 21 teams. In the presented solutions, we recognize interesting combinations of recent computer vision models, data augmentation strategies and ensemble methods to achieve remarkable accuracy in the task we posed. A clear trend towards adoption of vision-transformer based methods is evident. We present new, deep optical observations of the early-type galaxy NGC 4278, which is located in a small loose group. We find that the galaxy lacks fine substructure, i.e., it appears relaxed, out to a radius of $\sim$70 kpc. Our $g$- and $i$-band surface brightness profiles are uniform down to our deepest levels of $\sim$28 mag arcsec$^{-2}$. This spans an extremely large radial range of more than 14 half-mass radii. Combined with archival globular cluster (GC) number density maps and a new analysis of the total mass distribution obtained from archival Chandra X-ray data, we find that the red GC subpopulation traces well the stellar mass density profile from 2.4 out to even 14 half-mass radii, while the blue GC subpopulation traces the total mass density profile of the galaxy over a large radial range. Our results reinforce the scenario that red GCs form mostly in-situ along with the stellar component of the galaxy, while the blue GCs are more closely aligned with the total mass distribution in the halo and were accreted along with halo matter. We conclude that for galaxies where the X-ray emission from the hot halo is too faint to be properly observable and as such is not available to measure the dark matter profile, the blue GC population can be used to trace this dark matter component out to large radii., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, 1 table. We present Deep Search DocQA. This application enables information extraction from documents via a question-answering conversational assistant. The system integrates several technologies from different AI disciplines consisting of document conversion to machine-readable format (via computer vision), finding relevant data (via natural language processing), and formulating an eloquent response (via large language models). Users can explore over 10,000 Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) disclosure reports from over 2000 corporations. We study the present-day rotational velocity ($V_{rot}$) and velocity dispersion (${\sigma}$) profiles of the globular cluster (GC) systems in a sample of 50 lenticular (S0) galaxies from the E-MOSAICS galaxy formation simulations. We find that 82% of the galaxies have GCs that are rotating along the photometric major axis of the galaxy ($aligned$), while the remaining 18% of the galaxies do not ($misaligned$). This is generally consistent with the observations from the SLUGGS survey. For the $aligned$ galaxies, classified as $peaked$ $and$ $outwardly$ $decreasing$ (49%), $flat$ (24%) and $increasing$ (27%) based on the $V_{rot}/{\sigma}$ profiles out to large radii, we do not find any clear correlation between these present-day $V_{rot}/{\sigma}$ profiles of the GCs and the past merger histories of the S0 galaxies, unlike in previous simulations of galaxy stars. For just over half of the $misaligned$ galaxies, we find that the GC misalignment is the result of a major merger within the last 10 Gyr so that the $ex$-$situ$ GCs are misaligned by an angle between 0{\deg} (co-rotation) to 180{\deg} (counter-rotation) with respect to the $in$-$situ$ GCs, depending on the orbital configuration of the merging galaxies. For the remaining $misaligned$ galaxies, we suggest that the $in$-$situ$ metal-poor GCs, formed at early times, have undergone more frequent kinematic perturbations than the $in$-$situ$ metal-rich GCs. We also find that the GCs accreted early and the $in$-$situ$ GCs are predominantly located within 0.2 virial radii ($R_{200}$) from the centre of galaxies in 3D phase-space diagrams., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures

Foundation Models (FMs) have demonstrated unprecedented capabilities including zero-shot learning, high fidelity data synthesis, and out of domain generalization. However, as we show in this paper, FMs still have poor out-of-the-box performance on expert tasks (e.g. retrieval of car manuals technical illustrations from language queries), data for which is either unseen or belonging to a long-tail part of the data distribution of the huge datasets used for FM pre-training. This underlines the necessity to explicitly evaluate and finetune FMs on such expert tasks, arguably ones that appear the most in practical real-world applications. In this paper, we propose a first of its kind FETA benchmark built around the task of teaching FMs to understand technical documentation, via learning to match their graphical illustrations to corresponding language descriptions. Our FETA benchmark focuses on text-to-image and image-to-text retrieval in public car manuals and sales catalogue brochures. FETA is equipped with a procedure for completely automatic annotation extraction (code would be released upon acceptance), allowing easy extension of FETA to more documentation types and application domains in the future. Our automatic annotation leads to an automated performance metric shown to be consistent with metrics computed on human-curated annotations (also released). We provide multiple baselines and analysis of popular FMs on FETA leading to several interesting findings that we believe would be very valuable to the FM community, paving the way towards real-world application of FMs for practical expert tasks currently 'overlooked' by standard benchmarks focusing on common objects.

Tropical dry plant formations comprise diverse forests found in areas that experience pronounced seasonal changes in precipitation. Across broad regions, variation in the amount and distribution of precipitation determine the availability of water, and thus differences in species composition and phenology. Within any given region hydrology and topographic position, and geologic substrate may underlie additional differences in forest attributes. Of these three factors, geologic substrate is the least understood but it has been suggested that its influence on tropical dry forests, and more broadly speaking tropical forests, results from a combination of mechanisms regulating the use of water and nutrients. Phenological studies at population, community, and system levels acknowledge the significance of plan phenology for different ecological processes. Thus, characterizing phenological patterns at multiple levels of biological organization as a function of geologic substrate is important to assess the diversity of behaviors, and ultimately vulnerability of tropical dry forests to climate change. A study conducted in Curaçao between September of 1992 to February of 1995 at three sites underlaing by different geologies provided a unique opportunity to investigate the extent to which plant phenology diverges in regions underlain by different geologies.

Il 2022 è l’anno centenario della morte di Marcel Proust. Eventi di ogni tipo sono stati realizzati in Francia e in molti paesi europei, tra cui l’Italia. La Firenze University Press ha deciso di celebrare l’evento affidando ad Anna Dolfi l’allestimento di un volume dedicato all’autore destinato alla collana “Moderna/Comparata”, un volume che rappresentasse elementi di novità rispetto al conosciuto, che coinvolgesse docenti dell’università di Firenze e di altri atenei, ricercatori già noti e giovani studiosi. Nasce così Il ‘tono’ Proust che presenta una lettura inedita e polifonica del grande Marcel: ripercorre tracce perdute e pagine dimenticate, indaga cosa hanno prodotto il desiderio e la malattia. Si scopre perfino un Proust che ha precorso le nostre paure e clausure da pandemia, sperimentando ogni percorso della memoria, e che spesso ci è arrivato ‘a pezzi’ per responsabilità di quanti non l’hanno letto per intero, dimenticando i consigli dei suoi grandi interpreti e il segno lasciato in scrittori, poeti, pensatori italiani e stranieri. L’architettura di questo libro consente di muoversi liberamente tra le diverse proposte e ricrea in una paradossale unità quella disseminazione di temi e figure, affioramenti e intermittences, tipica della poetica e dell’opera proustiana.

We investigate the origin of the large clustering signal detected in the angular distribution of the radio sources in the TGSS catalog. To do so, we cross-correlate the angular position of the radio sources with the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) lensing maps from the Planck satellite, since cross-correlation is expected to be insensitive to source of possible systematic errors that may generate a spurious clustering signal. The amplitude of the angular cross-correlation spectrum of TGSS-CMB lensing turns out to be much smaller than that of the TGSS auto-spectrum and consistent with that of the NVSS-CMB lensing cross spectrum. A result that confirms the spurious origin of the TGSS large scale clustering signal. We further compare the two cross-spectra with theoretical predictions that use various prescriptions from the literature, for the redshift counts of the radio sources, $N(z)$, and their bias $b(z)$. These models, that assume a $\Lambda$CDM cosmology and that were proposed to fit the NVSS auto-spectrum, fail to match the cross-spectra on large scale, though not by far. When the bias relation is let free to vary (model predictions are rather insensitive to the choice of the N(z)) the quality of the fit improves but a large bias ($ b_g = 2.53 \pm 0.11$) is required, which does not seem to be consistent with the observed clustering amplitude of the radio sources in the local universe. Whether this large cross-correlation amplitude represents a problem for the radio sources models, or for the $\Lambda$CDM framework itself, can only be clarified using next generation datasets featuring large number of objects. What our analysis does show is the possibility to remove the $N(z)$ and $b(z)$ degeneracy by combining angular and cross-correlation analyses., Comment: 21 pages, 18 figures

Document understanding is a key business process in the data-driven economy since documents are central to knowledge discovery and business insights. Converting documents into a machine-processable format is a particular challenge here due to their huge variability in formats and complex structure. Accordingly, many algorithms and machine-learning methods emerged to solve particular tasks such as Optical Character Recognition (OCR), layout analysis, table-structure recovery, figure understanding, etc. We observe the adoption of such methods in document understanding solutions offered by all major cloud providers. Yet, publications outlining how such services are designed and optimized to scale in the cloud are scarce. In this paper, we focus on the case of document conversion to illustrate the particular challenges of scaling a complex data processing pipeline with a strong reliance on machine-learning methods on cloud infrastructure. Our key objective is to achieve high scalability and responsiveness for different workload profiles in a well-defined resource budget. We outline the requirements, design, and implementation choices of our document conversion service and reflect on the challenges we faced. Evidence for the scaling behavior and resource efficiency is provided for two alternative workload distribution strategies and deployment configurations. Our best-performing method achieves sustained throughput of over one million PDF pages per hour on 3072 CPU cores across 192 nodes., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, to be published in IEEE CLOUD 2022

Accurate document layout analysis is a key requirement for high-quality PDF document conversion. With the recent availability of public, large ground-truth datasets such as PubLayNet and DocBank, deep-learning models have proven to be very effective at layout detection and segmentation. While these datasets are of adequate size to train such models, they severely lack in layout variability since they are sourced from scientific article repositories such as PubMed and arXiv only. Consequently, the accuracy of the layout segmentation drops significantly when these models are applied on more challenging and diverse layouts. In this paper, we present \textit{DocLayNet}, a new, publicly available, document-layout annotation dataset in COCO format. It contains 80863 manually annotated pages from diverse data sources to represent a wide variability in layouts. For each PDF page, the layout annotations provide labelled bounding-boxes with a choice of 11 distinct classes. DocLayNet also provides a subset of double- and triple-annotated pages to determine the inter-annotator agreement. In multiple experiments, we provide baseline accuracy scores (in mAP) for a set of popular object detection models. We also demonstrate that these models fall approximately 10\% behind the inter-annotator agreement. Furthermore, we provide evidence that DocLayNet is of sufficient size. Lastly, we compare models trained on PubLayNet, DocBank and DocLayNet, showing that layout predictions of the DocLayNet-trained models are more robust and thus the preferred choice for general-purpose document-layout analysis., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables. The Global Register of Introduced and Invasive Species (GRIIS) presents validated and verified checklists of introduced (alien) and invasive alien species at the country level. Despite their ubiquity throughout the Universe, the formation of S0 galaxies remains uncertain. Recent observations have revealed that S0 galaxies make up a diverse population which is difficult to explain with a single formation pathway, suggesting that the picture of how these galaxies form is more complicated than originally envisioned. Here we take advantage of the latest hydrodynamical cosmological simulations and follow up these studies with an investigation into the formation histories of S0s in IllustrisTNG. We first classify IllustrisTNG galaxies in a way which is fully consistent with the observations, and reproduce the observed photometric and environmental distributions seen for the S0 population. We then trace the formation histories of S0 galaxies back through time, identifying two main distinct pathways; those which experienced gas stripping via group infalls (37 percent of S0s) or significant merger events (57 percent). We find that those forming via mergers feature a transient star-forming ring, whose present-day occurrence rate matches observations. We find that these formation pathways together can reproduce the range in rotational support in observed S0s, concluding that there are two main formation pathways for S0 galaxies., Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Modification of a ZrO2 based catalyst with selected transition metals dopants has shown promising improvement in the catalytic activity of palmitic acid ketonization. Small amounts of metal oxide deposition on the surface of the ZrO2 catalyst enhances the yield of palmitone (16-hentriacontanone) as the major product with pentadecane as the largest side product. This investigation explores the effects of addition of carefully chosen metal oxides (Fe2O3, NiO, MnO2, CeO2, CuO, CoO, Cr2O3, La2O3 and ZnO) as dopants on bulk ZrO2. The catalysts are prepared via a deposition–precipitation method followed by calcination at 550 °C and characterized by XRD, BET-surface area, TPD-CO2, TPD-NH3, FESEM, TEM and XPS. The screening of synthesized catalysts was carried out with 5% catalyst loading onto 15 g of pristine palmitic acid and the reaction carried out at 340 °C for 3 h. Preliminary studies show catalytic activity improvement with addition of dopants in the order of La2O3/ZrO2 < CoO/ZrO2 < MnO2/ZrO2 with the highest palmitic acid conversion of 92% and palmitone yield of 27.7% achieved using 5% MnO2/ZrO2 catalyst. Besides, NiO/ZrO2 exhibits high selectivity exclusively for pentadecane compared to other catalysts with maximum yield of 24.9% and conversion of 64.9% is observed. Therefore, the changes in physicochemical properties of the dopant added ZrO2 catalysts and their influence in palmitic acid ketonization reaction is discussed in detail.

Over the last decade, the African turquoise killifish, Nothobranchius furzeri, has emerged as an important model system for the study of vertebrate biology and ageing. Propagation of laboratory inbred strains of Nothobranchius furzeri, such as GRZ, however, can pose challenges due to the short window of fertility, the efforts and space requirements involved in continuous strain maintenance, and the risks of further inbreeding. The current method for long term strain preservation relies on arrest of embryos in diapause. To create an alternative for long term maintenance, we developed a robust protocol to cryopreserve and revive sperm for in vitro fertilization (IVF). We tested a variety of extender and activator buffers for sperm IVF, as well as cryoprotectants to achieve practical long-term storage and fertilization conditions tailored to this species. Our protocol enabled sperm to be preserved in a cryogenic condition for months and to be revived with an average of 40% viability upon thawing. Thawed sperm were able to fertilize nearly the same number of eggs as natural fertilization, with an average of similar to 25% and peaks of similar to 55% fertilization. This technical advance will greatly facilitate the use of N. furzeri as a model organism.

We investigate the kinematic properties of nine nearby early-type galaxies with evidence of a disk-like component. Three of these galaxies are located in the field, five in the group and only one in the cluster environment. By combining the kinematics of the stars with those of the globular clusters (GCs) and planetary nebulae (PNe), we probe the outer regions of our galaxies out to $\sim$4-6 Re. Six galaxies have PNe and red GCs that show good kinematic alignment with the stars, whose rotation occurs along the photometric major-axis of the galaxies, suggesting that both the PNe and red GCs are good tracers of the underlying stellar population beyond that traced by the stars. Additionally, the blue GCs also show rotation that is overall consistent with that of the red GCs in these six galaxies. The remaining three galaxies show kinematic twists and misalignment of the PNe and GCs with respect to the underlying stars, suggesting recent galaxy interactions. From the comparison with simulations, we propose that all six aligned galaxies that show similar dispersion-dominated kinematics at large radii (>2-3 Re) had similar late ($z<1$) assembly histories characterised by mini mergers (mass-ratio <1:10). The different Vrot/$\sigma$ profiles are then the result of an early ($z>1$) minor merger (1:10< mass-ratio <1:4) for the four galaxies with peaked and decreasing Vrot/$\sigma$ profiles and of a late minor merger for the two galaxies with flat Vrot/$\sigma$ profiles. The three mis-aligned galaxies likely formed through multiple late minor mergers that enhanced their velocity dispersion at all radii, or a late major merger that spun-up both the GC sub-populations at large radii. Therefore, lenticular galaxies can have complex merger histories that shape their characteristic kinematic profile shapes., Comment: 31 pages, 12 figures. The number of published PDF documents has increased exponentially in recent decades. There is a growing need to make their rich content discoverable to information retrieval tools. In this paper, we present a novel approach to document structure recovery in PDF using recurrent neural networks to process the low-level PDF data representation directly, instead of relying on a visual re-interpretation of the rendered PDF page, as has been proposed in previous literature. We demonstrate how a sequence of PDF printing commands can be used as input into a neural network and how the network can learn to classify each printing command according to its structural function in the page. This approach has three advantages: First, it can distinguish among more fine-grained labels (typically 10-20 labels as opposed to 1-5 with visual methods), which results in a more accurate and detailed document structure resolution. Second, it can take into account the text flow across pages more naturally compared to visual methods because it can concatenate the printing commands of sequential pages. Last, our proposed method needs less memory and it is computationally less expensive than visual methods. This allows us to deploy such models in production environments at a much lower cost. Through extensive architectural search in combination with advanced feature engineering, we were able to implement a model that yields a weighted average F1 score of 97% across 17 distinct structural labels. The best model we achieved is currently served in production environments on our Corpus Conversion Service (CCS), which was presented at KDD18 (arXiv:1806.02284). This model enhances the capabilities of CCS significantly, as it eliminates the need for human annotated label ground-truth for every unseen document layout. Monocytes are part of the mononuclear phagocytic system. Monocytes play a central role during inflammatory conditions and a better understanding of their dynamics might open therapeutic opportunities. In the present study, we focused on the characterization and impact of monocytes on brown adipose tissue (BAT) functions during tissue remodeling. Single-cell RNA sequencing analysis of BAT immune cells uncovered a large diversity in monocyte and macrophage populations. Fate-mapping experiments demonstrated that the BAT macrophage pool requires constant replenishment from monocytes. Using a genetic model of BAT expansion, we found that brown fat monocyte numbers were selectively increased in this scenario. This observation was confirmed using a CCR2-binding radiotracer and positron emission tomography. Importantly, in line with their tissue recruitment, blood monocyte counts were decreased while bone marrow hematopoiesis was not affected. Monocyte depletion prevented brown adipose tissue expansion and altered its architecture. Podoplanin engagement is strictly required for BAT expansion. Together, these data redefine the diversity of immune cells in the BAT and emphasize the role of monocyte recruitment for tissue remodeling.

From comparison with simulations, we propose an assembly history in which the original progenitor spiral galaxy undergoes a gas-rich minor merger that results in the embedded kinematically cold disk that we see today in NGC 3115. At a later stage, dwarf galaxies, in mini mergers (mass-ratio $<$ 1:10), were accreted building-up the outer slowly rotating spheroid, with the central disk kinematics largely unaltered. Additionally, we report new spectroscopic observations of a sample of ultra-compact dwarfs (UCDs) around NGC 3115 with the Keck/KCWI instrument. We find that five UCDs are inconsistent with the general rotation field of the GCs, suggesting an \textit{ex-situ} origin for these objects, i.e. perhaps the remnants of tidally stripped dwarfs. RIPK1 regulates cell death and inflammation through kinase-dependent and -independent mechanisms. As a scaffold, RIPK1 inhibits caspase-8-dependent apoptosis and RIPK3/MLKL-dependent necroptosis. As a kinase, RIPK1 paradoxically induces these cell death modalities. The molecular switch between RIPK1 pro-survival and pro-death functions remains poorly understood. We identify phosphorylation of RIPK1 on Ser25 by IKKs as a key mechanism directly inhibiting RIPK1 kinase activity and preventing TNF-mediated RIPK1-dependent cell death. Mimicking Ser25 phosphorylation (S > D mutation) protects cells and mice from the cytotoxic effect of TNF in conditions of IKK inhibition. In line with their roles in IKK activation, TNF-induced Ser25 phosphorylation of RIPK1 is defective in TAK1- or SHARPIN-deficient cells and restoring phosphorylation protects these cells from TNF-induced death. Importantly, mimicking Ser25 phosphorylation compromises the in vivo cell death-dependent immune control of Yersinia infection, a physiological model of TAK1/IKK inhibition, and rescues the cell death-induced multi-organ inflammatory phenotype of the SHARPIN-deficient mice.

The so-called minimal models of unconventional superconductivity are lattice models of interacting electrons derived from materials in which electron pairing arises from purely repulsive interactions. Showing unambiguously that a minimal model actually can have a superconducting ground state remains a challenge at nonperturbative interactions. We make a significant step in this direction by computing ground states of the 2D U-V Hubbard model—the minimal model of the quasi-1D superconductors—by parallelized DMRG, which allows for systematic control of any bias and that is sign-problem-free. Using distributed-memory supercomputers and leveraging the advantages of the U-V model, we can treat unprecedented sizes of 2D strips and extrapolate their spin gap both to zero approximation error and the thermodynamic limit. Our results for the spin gap are shown to be compatible with a spin excitation spectrum that is either fully gapped or has zeros only in discrete points, and conversely that a Fermi liquid or magnetically ordered ground state is incompatible with them. Coupled with the enhancement to short-range correlations that we find exclusively in the dxy pairing channel, this allows us to build an indirect case for the ground state of this model having superconducting order in the full 2D limit, and ruling out the other main possible phases, magnetic orders, and Fermi liquids.

We investigate the clustering properties of radio sources in the Alternative Data Release 1 of the TIFR GMRT Sky Survey (TGSS), focusing on large angular scales, where previous analyses have detected a large clustering signal. After appropriate data selection, the TGSS sample we use contains ~110,000 sources selected at 150 MHz over ~70% of the sky. The survey footprint is largely superimposed on that of the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) with the majority of TGSS sources having a counterpart in the NVSS sample. These characteristics make TGSS suitable for large-scale clustering analyses and facilitate the comparison with the results of previous studies. In this analysis we focus on the angular power spectrum, although the angular correlation function is also computed to quantify the contribution of multiple-component radio sources. We find that on large angular scales, corresponding to multipoles $2 \leq \ell \leq 30$, the amplitude of the TGSS angular power spectrum is significantly larger than that of the NVSS. We do not identify any observational systematic effects that may explain this mismatch. We have produced a number of physically motivated models for the TGSS angular power spectrum and found that all of them fail to match observations, even when taking into account observational and theoretical uncertainties. The same models provide a good fit to the angular spectrum of the NVSS sources. These results confirm the anomalous nature of the TGSS large-scale power, which has no obvious physical origin and seems to indicate that unknown systematic errors are present in the TGSS dataset., Comment: updated to match the published version
