Hydrothermally altered rocks generated from underground/tunnel projects often produce acidic leachate and release heavy metals and toxic metalloids, such as arsenic (As). The adsorption layer and immobilization methods using natural adsorbents or immobilizer as reasonable countermeasures have been proposed. In this study, two sets of column experiments were conducted, of which one was focused on the laboratory columns and other on the in situ columns, to evaluate the effects of column conditions on leaching of As from excavated rocks and on adsorption or immobilization behavior of As by a river sediment (RS) as a natural adsorbent or immobilizer. A bottom adsorption layer consisting of the RS was constructed under the excavated rock layer or a mixing layer of the excavated rock and river sediment was packed in the column. The results showed that no significant trends in the adsorption and immobilization of As by the RS were observed by comparing laboratory and in situ column experiments because the experimental conditions did not influence significant change in the leachate pH which affects As adsorption or immobilization. However, As leaching concentrations of the in situ experiments were higher than those of the laboratory column experiments. In addition, the lower pH, higher Eh and higher coexisting sulfate ions of the leachate were observed for the in situ columns, compared to the results of the laboratory columns. These results indicate that the leaching concentration of As became higher in the in situ columns, resulting in higher oxidation of sulfide minerals in the rock. This may be due to the differences in conditions, such as temperature and water content, which induce the differences in the rate of oxidation of minerals contained in the rock. © 2020 by Japan Oil Chemists’ Society. The surface charge/surface potential of the air/water interface plays a key role in many natural and industrial processes. Since the first decade of the 20th century, there are many theoretical proposals to describe the surface charge in the presence of different moieties. However, a complete and consistent description of the interfacial layer remains elusive. More recently, the theoretical frameworks and experimental data get complementary support from the simulation at a molecular level. This paper reviews the recent developments from the theoretical, experimental and simulation aspects. The combined results indicated that the interaction between hydration shells of adsorbed ions and the H-bonds network of surface water plays a critical role in the ionic adsorption. The factor should be incorporated into the conventional theories to correctly predict the ion distribution near the air/water surface.

When droplets impact on a heated wall, they can levitate owing to the vapor stream generated by the droplet evaporation. This phenomenon is called the Leidenfrost effect, and the vapor layer prevents heat transfer between the droplet and heated wall. In this study, we investigated the influence of the intermolecular force between liquid and solid molecules on the levitating phenomenon, which is caused by heat transfer, for nanodroplets. We used a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation to evaluate the detailed behavior of droplet levitation and investigated the temperature field of the impacting droplet. We found that the droplet levitation was likely to occur at lower temperature when the intermolecular force was stronger. In addition, when the intermolecular force was strong enough, the liquid molecules stayed on the heated wall and an adsorption layer was formed. This adsorption layer exceeded the critical temperature of the liquid molecules, and the existence of the adsorption layer significantly affected the onset of the droplet levitation.

The properties of Pt-electrodes in 1 M HClO4 solution, in air, were studied both in the resting-state and mild oxidation conditions, within the potential range of 1000 mV and 1600 mV. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and cathodic stripping voltammetry (CSV) were used for coulometric determination of the amount of O-containing species adsorbed on the electrode surface during the oxidation-reduction reactions. Simultaneously, the mass of the adsorption layer was measured in situ, with the electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM). The surface of the Pt-black electrode in the resting-state is covered with OH*-species (apparently a ML), which are spontaneously generated by immersion in the aqueous solution without any polarization potential. The surface of the Pt smooth electrode is covered uppermost by a sub-monolayer of oxygen, in similar conditions. The resting-state of the Pt-black electrode is characterized by a reproducible value of the rest potential, E-r = 1040 +/- 5 mV (average of 10 samples) and a reduction peak in CV mode at E'(p) = 791 +/- 7 mV (average of 10 samples). In anodic polarization conditions, PtOH* is oxidized to PtO*, in CV mode, and to Pt(O-2)*, in the potentiostatic mode. The reduction peak of PtO* in CV mode is E ''(p) = 694 +/- 9 mV (average of 10 samples), indicating a stronger bond to the surface of the electrode. The yielding of Pt(O-2)* is not fast enough to accommodate the increase of the oxidation potential by finite sweep rate of the CV mode at 10 mVs(-1). Therefore this oxidation level could not be achieved in CV mode. The prolonged oxidation in the potentiostatic mode results in the coverage of the surface of Pt-black electrode with a monolayer of (O-2)*-species.
