Silverman collaborated on the music with songwriter Adam Schlesinger, who co-founded the band Fountains of Wayne; but he sadly died of covid early on in the pandemic. Songwriter David Yazbeck completed writing the songs. (The musical officially opens June 7th at the Atlantic Theater Company in Manhattan) (THIS INTERVIEW CONTINUES INTO THE SECOND HALF OF THE SHOW). (2.) We remember writer and editor ROGER ANGELL who worked for decades at The New Yorker magazine. He died Friday at the age of 101. He was the magazine's fiction editor for 40 years; he became well known for his baseball writing - a passion that grew out of a magazine assignment to write about spring training in 1962. His essays about baseball were collected in the books 'Late Innings' (1982) and 'Once More Around the Park' (1991). ANGELL's mother Katharine Sergeant Angell White was one of the first editors hired at the magazine by Harold Ross in 1925. His stepfather was the famed essayist and contributor E.B. White. In 2014 ANGELL was awarded the J.G. Taylor Spink Award, the Baseball Hall of Fame's honor for writers. (INTERVIEW REBROADCAST FROM 7.11.2001)

- Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW:With an increase in single-sport specialization, elbow injuries have become increasingly common in the pediatric and adolescent population. Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the capitellum frequently requires intervention yet can be difficult to treat given high patient activity demands. The purpose of this paper is to review treatment options, understand failure rates, and provide strategies for successful revision surgery. RECENT FINDINGS:Patients at high risk for the development of this condition are involved in high-demand upper extremity activity such as baseball or gymnastics. Treatment options include non-operative management, drilling, fixation, loose body removal/microfracture, osteochondral autograft, and osteochondral allograft. Cartilage preservation procedures (i.e., osteochondral autograft) have a significant advantage in terms of clinical and radiographic healing compared with fixation or microfracture. Capitellar OCD lesions afflict a large number of adolescent athletes today and will likely continue increasing in number from sports-related injuries. It is critical to recognize and treat these lesions in a timely and appropriate fashion to optimize clinical outcomes. When faced with failure of healing, surgeons must critically analyze reasons for failure including post-operative compliance, return to high-demand sporting activity, fixation of non-viable fragments, utilization of microfracture, alignment, and concomitant pathology.

- Abstract
Background: Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) lesions are often observed in the humeral capitellum both in young baseball players and gymnasts. It is generally believed that capitellar OCD in baseball players can be seen on an anteroposterior (AP) radiograph with the elbow in 45° of flexion. However, the mechanism of injury seems to be different in baseball players and gymnasts. Repetitive valgus overload with the elbow in flexion is believed to be the cause of capitellar OCD lesions in baseball players, whereas weightbearing with the elbow in extension may be the cause of OCD in gymnasts. Purpose: To determine the difference in capitellar OCD location between baseball players and gymnasts and to propose the optimal AP radiographic angle of the elbow for visualization of early-stage OCD lesions in adolescent gymnasts. Study Design: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: Subjects consisted of 95 baseball players (95 elbows) and 21 gymnasts (24 elbows) with a mean age of 13.7 years (range, 11-18 years). To localize the lesion, inclination of the affected area in the humeral capitellum against the humeral axis was investigated using sagittal computed tomography images of the elbow. The inclination angle was defined as the angle between the long axis of the humerus and the line perpendicular to a line that connected the anterior and posterior margin of the lesion. The inclination angle in each group was compared and statistically analyzed. Results: The mean inclination angle was 57.6° ± 10.7° in baseball players and 28.0° ± 10.7° in gymnasts. Capitellar OCD lesions were located more anterior in baseball players when compared with gymnasts (P < .01). Conclusion: Due to differences in applied stress, capitellar OCD lesions in baseball players were located more anteriorly compared with those seen in gymnasts. Therefore, although AP radiographs with the elbow in 45° of flexion are optimal for detecting OCD lesions in baseball players, radiographs with less elbo, Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine, 5(3), 2325967117692513; 2017

PIAZZA spent 16 years with the big leagues, beginning with the Dodgers, and went on to play with the Padres, the A's, the Marlins, and finally the Mets. He's considered one of the best hitting catchers in the game. Though his start with the Dodgers was less promising. He was drafted in 1988 in the 62nd round, and Tommy Lasorda, the manager of the team was a childhood friend of PIAZZA's father, stoking rumors of favoritism. PIAZZA went on to be selected for the All-star team twelve times. Many fans will remember his feud with pitcher Roger Clemens who hit him in the head with a fastball during the 2000 season. PIAZZA suffered a concussion. Later during the World Series that year, the bat he was using shattered on a pitch by Clemens. The barrel and a sharp edge of the broken bat flew toward Clemens on the mound. Clemens caught the barrel and in an apparent reflex, threw the barrell across the the first base line towards the Yankees' dugout and just past Piazza who was running down to first base. Fresh Air has broken the mold of 'talk show' by weaving together superior journalism and intimate storytelling from modern-day intellectuals, politicians and artists alike. Through probing questions and careful research, Gross's interviews are lauded for revealing a fresh perspective on cultural icons and trends. Her thorough conversations are often complemented by commentary from well-known contributors. Fresh Air is produced at WHYY-FM in Philadelphia and broadcast nationally by NPR., (1.) Journalist LARRY TYE is the author of the book 'Satchel: The Life and Times of an American Legend' (Random House). Satchel Paige had a scorching fast ball, and pinpoint accuracy. He could throw a fastball repeatedly over a match book, or a postage stamp set on home base, something he would do to delight baseball crowds. He dazzled fans both black and white, playing in the Negro baseball leagues, or barnstorming across the country. Paige helped integrate baseball a decade before Jackie Robinson, touring the country playing exhibition games with white players. Yet he experienced racial discrimination, and watched the careers of white players soar, as his was stuck. Eventually Paige joined major league baseball, after Jackie Robinson. In 1971 he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, the first player to make the hall based on his career in the negro leagues. After years of civil war, she is trying to reconstruct a failed state and a devastated economy. Sirleaf was imprisoned more than once for speaking out against greed and political oppression in Liberia. (2.) Filmmakers ANNA BODEN and RYAN FLECK. Their new feature film is called Sugar. Thousands of Dominican teenagers attend baseball camps in the home country run by major league baseball teams, hoping to make it to ballparks in America. Sugar is the story of one young man's journey from the streets of his village to a minor league team in Iowa. The film has received nearly universal critical acclaim. Salon called it the 'best baseball movie ever.' The New York Times' A.O. Scott labeled Sugar 'wise and lovely.' The directing, producing and writing team of Boden and Fleck also created the independent feature Half Nelson.

The decade since the strike has come to be known as 'The Juiced Era,' with greater profit and more record breakers than ever before.
