Dietary and predator–prey studies are more frequently relying on DNA metabarcoding methods, typically achieving results that have a better taxonomic resolution (e.g., species-level) than previous methods. With the continuous advancement in sequencing technology, what was previously accessible only as a large, fixed structure in a laboratory, which had a limited number of users, has now advanced to a small and readily usable device. In this study, we used the gut (content and lining) from juvenile lanternfish (Hygophum) specimens to compare the short-read sequencing capability of the portable Nanopore MinION with the Illumina MiSeq. Primers common in dietary DNA metabarcoding work (COI “Leray primers” and 18S rRNA V4 “Zhan primers”) were used, with an additional comparison of cost-effective COI “Lobo primers” (targeting the same COI fragment) for the proficiency in species detection of a broad range of taxa. Our results indicate high congruency between sequencing machines for, not only taxonomic assignments, but also relative read abundance of the main dietary items. We also identified that Nanopore sequencing is more cost-effective. The Lobo primers are comparable to that of Leray, but substantially reduce the primer set price without compromising detection of taxa. Using both COI and 18S broadened the taxonomic scope, providing greater prey detection. Overall, this preliminary study was successful in creating a foundation for future dietary work involving larvae and transformation stage fishes whereby the content of the gut need not be separated from the gut lining to detect prey. The Hygophum diet detected here aligns with previous research that suggests the main dietary items to be calanoid copepods, but using molecular methods, soft prey was more readily identified compared to studies using visual methods of identification of dietary items. This study examines vertical distribution of the early stages of mesopelagic fishes in the south-eastern Indian Ocean and oceanographic factors that may affect it. This investigation along the 110 °E transect formed part of the second International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE-2). Depth-stratified samples to 500 m depth of early stages of mesopelagic fishes were obtained by means a multinet EZ-1 m2. This net captured larvae and transforming stages, but juveniles and adults were also caught, particularly at night. Diel vertical patterns of the different species and stages were analysed relative to the oceanographic conditions encountered at the 20 stations along the transect. This paper provides the ranges of vertical occurrence and weighted mean depth for larvae (135 taxa), and post-metamorphic stages (75 taxa) of fishes caught during the survey. Despite the varying vertical profiles of oceanographic parameters encountered, there were consistent patterns within species and families along the transect, with broader vertical distribution of larvae at the southern stations, where the upper mixed layer was deeper. During both day and night, larval stages of all the species were concentrated in the epipelagic zone, with some differences in terms of weighted mean depth (WMD) between taxa, but with no significant differences in vertical location between day and night. Transforming and juvenile-adult stages, however, presented a wider vertical distribution range than larval stages, and showed important differences among families and species. For example, Myctophidae and Phosichthyidae species presented the highest concentrations in the upper 50–100 m at night, and a much deeper distribution during the day, thereby indicating night vertical migration behaviour of transforming and juvenile-adult stages. As part of the second International Indian Ocean Expedition, an oceanic transect from 39.5°S to 11.5°S along 110°E in the south-eastern Indian Ocean enabled concurrent oceanographic measurements and sampling of early stages of mesopelagic fishes within the upper 500 m of the water column. Notable oceanographic features along the generally oligotrophic transect included an increase in surface water temperature from 12 to 28 °C from south to north and low salinities at both ends of the transect. High salinity Subtropical Surface Water was evident over the central part of the transect and low dissolved oxygen occurred at depth at the northern end where tropical waters were influenced by the Indonesian Throughflow. Throughout the study region larval fish stages were generally concentrated in the epipelagic zone. Species richness, abundance and diversity of fishes (n = 166 species) increased towards the tropical waters. The families Myctophidae (lanternfishes; 60 species), Phosichthyidae (lightfishes; 2 species) and Gonostomatidae (bristlemouths; 5 species) were numerically dominant. Clustering of integrated abundance data (0–500 m depth) revealed four major fish assemblages along the transect. When linked to oceanographic variables, multivariate multiple regression indicated that surface temperature, surface salinity and dissolved oxygen at 400 m depth provided the best fitting model explaining fish distribution patterns. Additionally, dynamical processes and eddies either cause or enhance upwelling. This paper reviews the phenomena of upwelling along the coast of the Indian Ocean extending from the tip of South Africa to the southern tip of the west coast of Australia. Observed features, underlying mechanisms, and the impact of upwelling on the ecosystem are presented. In the Agulhas Current region, cyclonic eddies associated with Natal pulses drive slope upwelling and enhance chlorophyll concentrations along the continental margin. The Durban break-away eddy spun up by the Agulhas upwells cold nutrient-rich water. Additionally, topographically induced upwelling occurs along the inshore edges of the Agulhas Current. Wind-driven coastal upwelling occurs along the south coast of Africa and augments the dynamical upwelling in the Agulhas Current. Upwelling hotspots along the Mozambique coast are present in the northern and southern sectors of the channel and are ascribed to dynamical effects of ocean circulation in addition to wind forcing. Interaction of mesoscale eddies with the western boundary, dipole eddy pair interactions, and passage of cyclonic eddies cause upwelling. Upwelling along the southern coast of Madagascar is caused by the Ekman wind-driven mechanism and by eddy generation and is inhibited by the Southwest Madagascar Coastal Current. Seasonal upwelling along the East African coast is primarily driven by the northeast monsoon winds and enhanced by topographically induced shelf breaking and shear instability between the East African Coastal Current and the island chains. The mainly natural science oriented regional programmes showed mixed success in engaging and collaborating with social scientists. This was mostly attributed to the largely natural science (i.e., biological, physical) goals and agendas of the programmes, and the lack of institutional support and push to initiate connections with social science. Mesopelagic fishes of the southeastern Indian Ocean are represented by a high number of lanternfish species (Myctophidae). The horizontal distribution patterns of their larvae have been previously studied; however, research on larval feeding habits is non-existent. The goal of this study was to describe the diet and trophic-based strategies of the most abundant myctophid larvae off Western Australia through stomach content analysis. Samples were collected in autumn 2007 off southwestern Australia when this oligotrophic area was under the influence of the seasonal Leeuwin Current, and in autumn 2010 on the tropical continental shelf of northwestern Australia. The species investigated during these periods were Benthosema fibulatum, B. pterotum, B. suborbitale, Dasyscopelus asper, Diaphus “deep” and “slender” morphotypes, Hygophum hygomii, Lampadena luminosa, Lampanyctus alatus, Lampanyctus spp. and Myctophum sp. Generally, myctophid larvae showed a diurnal feeding pattern. Only postflexion stages in L. alatus, L. luminosa, B. pterotum, Diaphus “slender”, and Myctophum sp. preyed at dawn or during the night. The highest feeding incidence was found in L. luminosa and the Diaphus “deep” morphotype, while the lowest, in H. hygomii. Generally, larvae were zooplankton feeders with nauplii and copepodites being the most abundant dietary groups, except for B. suborbitale and Myctophum sp. where the small non-calanoid genus Oncaea was dominant. Soft organisms such as appendicularians were frequent items in most fish diets throughout their entire larval phase, and highly abundant in Diaphus “deep” morphotype. The wide prey-size spectrum indicates that the majority of the fish species were not size-specific feeders for most of their larval life. Nevertheless, B. suborbitale, B. fibulatum, and L. alatus preferred larger prey, ignoring the smaller items as they grew. In the eastern Indian Ocean, the Kimberley region off north-western Australia is characterised by a wide continental shelf, complex coastal topography and very large tides (>10 m). Diversity of fishes is high although little is known about the distribution of their larvae in this dynamic region. This study investigated spatial variation in ichthyoplankton assemblages along four coastal-oceanic transects and related the results to tidal cycles and other environmental variables. Larvae representing 92 neritic and 21 mesopelagic teleost families were collected; this far exceeds the diversity described for other comparable tropical continental shelf and oceanic systems. Distinct ichthyoplankton assemblages characterised inner shelf (Engraulidae and Gobiidae were dominant families), outer shelf / slope (mixed neritic and mesopelagic taxa) and oceanic waters (mesopelagic taxa, particularly Myctophidae, Gonostomatidae and Phosichthyidae), and were correlated with changes in environmental variables (water depth, seawater density, mixed layer depth and zooplankton). The spring-neap tidal cycle and subsequent tides (same stations sampled 12 h apart) had no significant influence on larval fish assemblages. Coastal waters were delineated by a density front and larval fish assemblages were significantly different from offshore assemblages. This study provides new insights into the pelagic ecosystem in the tropical eastern Indian Ocean and contributes to the understanding of the role of environmental variables and physical forcing in the structuring of larval fish assemblages

Anticyclonic (warm-core) mesoscale eddies (WCEs) in the Eastern Indian Ocean carry higher surface chlorophyll signatures than cyclonic (cold-core) eddies (CCEs). Paradoxically, WCEs host rock lobster larvae (phyllosomas) with lower lipid stores and protein reserves than phyllosomas in CCEs, suggesting a poorer nutritional status. We assess primary productivity and zooplankton isotopic data from eight eddies across four research voyages (2003–2011) to determine how this contradiction might occur. We find that WCEs and CCEs are equally productive per unit chlorophyll a, but depth-integrated primary production (PP) is greater in eddies with shallower mixed layers (MLs), especially in CCEs. MLs tend to be shallower in CCEs than in WCEs because the pycnocline is closer to the surface. This, in combination with stronger stratification in CCE euphotic zones than those of WCEs, supports greater flagellate and dinoflagellate populations in CCEs. These phytoplankton provide high-quality nutrition for zooplankton, which feed on average ~ 0.6 trophic level lower in CCEs with the shallowest MLs, accumulating high lipid stores. Conversely, WCEs have, on average, ~ 70 m deeper MLs than CCEs, and host a phytoplankton community with more diatoms. Diatoms provide lower quality food for zooplankton, and zooplankton lipid stores in WCEs decline with trophic level, and possibly, with time after initial (or seasonal) nutrient injection. As a result, phyllosomas in CCEs have higher energy and lipid content than those in warm-core eddies. The resolution of the paradox, therefore, is that the higher surface chlorophyll signatures of WCEs are not representative of the nutritional value of the prey field of the phyllosoma. We also conclude that interannual variations of mixed layer depth occur at a regional scale, controlling PP.

The main goal of this study is the description of the diet for the most abundant myctophid larvae off Western Australia: Benthosema suborbitale; B. fibulatum; B. pterotum, Lampadena luminosa, Hygophum hygomii, Lampanyctus alatus, Myctophum asperum, M. obtusirostre, M. selenops, and Diaphus spp. >deep> and >slender> morphotypes. The study region is an oligotrophic area under the influence of the Leeuwin Current for part of the year, such as in the period of study, autumn 2007. Myctophid larvae were diurnal feeders, and only a few postflexion individuals prey at dawn or night-time. Feeding incidence was higher in postflexion than earlier stages, and in larvae with saccular guts than in those with straight guts. The highest feeding incidence was found in L. luminosa and Diaphus spp. >deep-morphotype>, and the lowest in H. hygomii. Larvae were zooplankton feeders, with nauplii and copepodites being the most important groups in their diet. In general, the species with straight guts fed mainly on nauplii and those with saccular guts had a wider variety of prey categories. Some species such as B. pterotum and M. obtusirostre fed also over larval-stage euphausiids and on small amphipods. Presence of soft prey such as larvaceans was also observed in the guts of Diaphus >slender morphotype>. The wide prey size spectrum observed in larvae of many species indicated that they are generalist for most of their larval life e.g., M. obstusirostre, others such as L. alatus and Diaphus spp., preferred larger prey items, disregarding the small ones as they growth. Comparisons with larval feeding patterns of similar species from other ecosystems were discussed on the light of the environmental features of the region

Larval fishes are a useful metric of marine ecosystem state and change, as well as species-specific patterns in phenology. The high level of taxonomic expertise required to identify larval fishes to species level, and the considerable effort required to collect samples, make these data very valuable. Here we collate 3178 samples of larval fish assemblages, from 12 research projects from 1983-present, from temperate and subtropical Australian pelagic waters. This forms a benchmark for the larval fish assemblage for the region, and includes recent monitoring of larval fishes at coastal oceanographic reference stations. Comparing larval fishes among projects can be problematic due to differences in taxonomic resolution, and identifying all taxa to species is challenging, so this study reports a standard taxonomic resolution (of 218 taxa) for this region to help guide future research. This larval fish database serves as a data repository for surveys of larval fish assemblages in the region, and can contribute to analysis of climate-driven changes in the location and timing of the spawning of marine fishes.

Mesoscale eddies may drive a significant component of cross-shelf transport important in the ecology of shelf ecosystems and adjacent boundary currents. The Leeuwin Current in the eastern Indian Ocean becomes unstable in the austral autumn triggering the formation of eddies. We hypothesized that eddy formation represented the major driver of cross-shelf transport during the autumn. Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler profiles confirmed periodic offshore movement of 2 Sv of shelf waters into the forming eddy from the shelf, carrying a load of organic particles (>0.06 mm). The gap between inflow and outflow then closed, such that the eddy became isolated from further direct input of shelf waters. Drifter tracks supported an anticyclonic surface flow peaking at the eddy perimeter and decreasing in velocity at the eddy center. Oxygen and nutrient profiles suggested rapid remineralization of nitrate mid-depth in the isolated water mass as it rotated, with a total drawdown of oxygen of 3.6 mol m22 to 350 m. Depletion of oxygen, and release of nitrate, occurred on the timescale of 1 week. We suggest that N supply and N turnover are rapid in this system, such that nitrate is acting primarily as a regenerated nutrient rather than as a source of new nitrogen. We hypothesize that sources of eddy particulate C and N could include particles sourced from coastal primary producers within 500 km such as macrophytes and seagrasses known to produce copious detritus, which is prone to resuspension and offshore transport.

Mesoscale eddies may drive a significant component of cross-shelf transport important in the ecology of shelf ecosystems and adjacent boundary currents. The Leeuwin Current in the eastern Indian Ocean becomes unstable in the austral autumn triggering the formation of eddies. We hypothesized that eddy formation represented the major driver of cross-shelf transport during the autumn. Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler profiles confirmed periodic offshore movement of 2 Sv of shelf waters into the forming eddy from the shelf, carrying a load of organic particles (>0.06 mm). The gap between inflow and outflow then closed, such that the eddy became isolated from further direct input of shelf waters. Drifter tracks supported an anticyclonic surface flow peaking at the eddy perimeter and decreasing in velocity at the eddy center. Oxygen and nutrient profiles suggested rapid remineralization of nitrate mid-depth in the isolated water mass as it rotated, with a total drawdown of oxygen of 3.6 mol m22 to 350 m. Depletion of oxygen, and release of nitrate, occurred on the timescale of 1 week. Changes in the offshore oceanographic processes are suspected to be the cause of a recent dramatic decline in the settlement of post-larvae of the Western Australian spiny lobster (Panulirus cygnus), which has greatly reduced the productivity from the world’s second-largest spiny lobster fishery. The present study assessed whether there are differences in the nutritional condition of the larvae of P. cygnus sampled from two pairs of cyclonic eddies (CEs) and anticyclonic eddies (AEs). Morphometric and biochemical analyses were undertaken on the mid–late-stage larvae (VI, VII, VIII) sampled offshore from two pairs of adjacent counter-rotating mesoscale eddies in the Leeuwin Current off Western Australia. The results showed that larvae captured from CEs had greater average total dry mass (P , 0.001) than those from AEs. Stage VIII larvae from CEs contained more protein (P , 0.008) (38.5% ` 5.4 s.e.) and lipid (P , 0.005) (67.2% ` 12.1) than did those from AEs. The possible causes for these differences are uncertain but may be related to differences in water temperatures in CEs v. AEs influencing the ability of phyllosomas to accumulate nutritional reserves.

Although zooplankton abundance increased towards the north, the prey field was unevenly distributed with patches of higher prey concentration associated mainly with LCW. Chaetognaths were the most abundant prey item (means: 17.2 and 4.1 m-3 in LCW and STSW, respectively) and were positively correlated with chlorophyll a in both water masses. Panulirus cygnus phyllosoma had a highly patchy distribution but, despite lower prey concentrations, were more abundant in STSW than LCW, particularly south of the front. Our results suggest that LC meso-scale features with strong fronts may be implicated in phyllosoma aggregations and shoreward transport of late-stage larvae and that this warrants further investigation.

Monitoring changes in coral cover and composition through space and time can provide insights to reef health and assist the focus of management and conservation efforts. We used a meta-analytical approach to assess coral cover data across latitudes 10–35°S along the west Australian coast, including 25 years of data from the Ningaloo region. Current estimates of coral cover ranged between 3 and 44% in coral habitats. Coral communities in the northern regions were dominated by corals from the families Acroporidae and Poritidae, which became less common at higher latitudes. At Ningaloo Reef coral cover has remained relatively stable through time (~28%), although north-eastern and southern areas have experienced significant declines in overall cover. These declines are likely related to periodic disturbances such as cyclones and thermal anomalies, which were particularly noticeable around 1998/1999 and 2010/2011. Linear mixed effects models (LME) suggest latitude explains 10% of the deviance in coral cover through time at Ningaloo. Acroporidae has decreased in abundance relative to other common families at Ningaloo in the south, which might be related to persistence of more thermally and mechanically tolerant families. We identify regions where quantitative time-series data on coral cover and composition are lacking, particularly in north-western Australia. Standardising routine monitoring methods used by management and research agencies at these, and other locations, would allow a more robust assessment of coral condition and a better basis for conservation of coral reefs.

Visitors who exhibit place attachment often demonstrate greater concern regarding how a place is managed. However, the extent to which the dimensions of attachment are related to management preferences has not been sufficiently investigated. Place attachment of visitors to coastal campsites along the southern Ningaloo coastline of northwestern Australia and its relation with management preferences were examined via an onsite survey. The relation was investigated using a suite of routines in the non-parametric multivariate statistics package PRIMER v6, providing the first example of the use of these types of statistical approaches in place research. Place attachment was measured using the dimensions of Place Identity, Place Dependence, and Everybody's Happy (a new, affective-based dimension). Within each dimension, significantly different groups of visitors were identified based on differences in their responses to the place attachment survey items. This was achieved using hierarchical agglomerative cluster analysis in conjunction with a Similarity Profile (SIMPROF) test. Subsequent analysis using the BVSTEP procedure showed that the pattern of differences among visitors in their responses to place attachment items produced significant though weak correlations with their level of support for various management actions. The authors conclude with a discussion of the implications of the results for future research on place and associated preferences for management actions.

Although there have been numerous studies of the meanings ascribed to terrestrial places, their applicability or otherwise to coastal and marine places has received limited attention. Through the process of photo-elicitation, the meanings ascribed to a remote coastal camping environment are examined, with the coastline of Ningaloo Marine Park in north-western Australia the focus for this study. Thirty participants were provided with digital cameras and the ascribed place meanings were explored when their photographs were discussed in subsequent in-depth interviews. Key meanings related to the physical environment providing opportunities for escape, participating in multiple marine-based activities, bonding with family and like-minded people, and offering a rewarding experience that makes everybody happy. This emergent meaning of 'everybody's happy' progresses the understanding of the affective elements of place, especially those realised by families and groups of friends. The paper traces important implications of this meaning, and provides a paradoxical perspective on isolation evident from the interviews, for managing coast-based recreation.

Empirical and modelled data were used to examine the influence of the Leeuwin Current on larval fish assemblages along the Western Australian continental shelf and adjacent eastern Indian Ocean (22°S-34°S) during the late austral autumn. Larval fish assemblages, comprising >200 taxa from 114 neritic and oceanic teleost families, displayed significantly distinct latitudinal and cross-shelf variability, which was linked to meso-scale features of the Leeuwin Current, specifically anticyclonic eddies. Results of Lagrangian particle back-tracking showed good connection between the shelf and a developing eddy situated at 27°S; connectivity was highest in the 0-20 m depth stratum where >80% of the particles entering the eddy were derived from the shelf. This was supported by the high abundance (mean: 84 larvae m -2) of larval neritic taxa, especially small anchovy Engraulis australis larvae in the eddy. The lack of a significant difference in the size structure of these larvae between the shelf and eddy indicated continuous connection between these waters. In contrast, connectivity between the shelf and an older eddy further south was much lower (<40% of particles in the 0-20 m stratum) and the larval fish assemblage was dominated by meso-pelagic species. Further, the distribution of Myctophidae larvae (Diaphus spp.) highlighted areas of enhanced onshore transport in the south. In recent years a well-known relationship between oceanographic conditions and lobster recruitment has become uncoupled, with significantly lower recruitment than expected, generating interest in the factors influencing survival and development of the planktonic larval stages. The nutritional requirements and wild prey of the planktotrophic larval stage (phyllosoma) of P. cygnus were previously unknown, hampering both management and aquaculture efforts for this species. Ship-board feeding trials of wild-caught mid-late stage P. cygnus phyllosoma in the eastern Indian Ocean, off the coast of Western Australia, were conducted in July 2010 and August-September 2011. In a series of experiments, phyllosoma were fed single and mixed species diets of relatively abundant potential prey items (chaetognaths, salps, and krill). Chaetognaths were consumed in 2–8 times higher numbers than the other prey, and the rate of consumption of chaetognaths increased with increasing concentration of prey. The highly variable lipid content of the phyllosoma, and the fatty acid profiles of the phyllosoma and chaetognaths, indicated they were from an oligotrophic oceanic food chain where food resources for macrozooplankton were likely to be constrained. Phyllosoma fed chaetognaths over 6 days showed significant changes in some fatty acids and tended to accumulate lipid, indicating an improvement in overall nutritional condition. The discovery of a preferred prey for P. cygnus will provide a basis for future oceanographic, management and aquaculture research for this economically and ecologically valuable species.

The timing, sources and pathways for incorporation of larval fishes into a developing anti-cyclonic eddy off south-western Australia were investigated. Larval fish assemblages within the study region were structured by location (shelf, eddy and oceanic) and water mass. The larval fish assemblage within the eddy was significantly distinct from that characterizing the surrounding oceanic water. The eddy assemblage, which was comprised largely of larvae of oceanic meso-pelagic fishes (especially Diaphus spp. and Vinciguerria spp.) and less abundant neritic taxa, reflected its Leeuwin Current (LC), shelf and oceanic source waters. The occurrence of neritic taxa in the eddy confirmed the hypothesis that these larvae were incorporated as it developed in proximity to the shelf break. The significantly larger larval size of temperate neritic taxa (e.g. Sardinops sagax, Engraulis australis) in the eddy compared with the shelf suggests that these larvae were transported from the shelf adjacent to the developing eddy. The occurrence of tropical neritic taxa (e.g. Acanthuridae, Lutjanidae, Pomacentridae) highlighted the LC as an important transport route to higher latitudes. Coupling the sampling of larval fishes with the trajectories of Lagrangian drifters provided insight into how larval fish assemblages changed during development of the eddy

Larval fish assemblages within two meso-scale eddies, located off the coast of south-western Australia, were investigated as part of an interdisciplinary study examining the biophysical nature of the eddies. Larval fish were sampled using oblique and depth-stratified plankton tows, taken within the centre, body and perimeter of both a cold-core cyclonic eddy and a warm-core anti-cyclonic eddy. Larvae from the oceanic families Myctophidae, Phosichthyidae and Gonostomatidae were the most abundant within the larval fish assemblage, with larvae from the families Sternoptychidae, Paralepididae and Stomiidae also common. Larval fish assemblages from the warm-core eddy were significantly different to those from the cold-core eddy. Significant differences were found between assemblages from the centre and body, and the centre and perimeter of the warm-core eddy, but there were no significant differences across zones in the cold-core eddy. Assemblages were more strongly structured with depth in the cold-core eddy than in the warm-core eddy. The correlation of environmental data to larval fish assemblages showed that sea-surface temperature was the variable best correlated with larval fish assemblage structure between eddies. Depth of the mixed-layer was best correlated with assemblages in the warm-core eddy only, but no significant environmental correlations existed in the cold-core eddy assemblages. We hypothesise that this was a result of the differing oceanographic structure between the two eddies

The paper is based on larval distribution data from five lanternfish species outside the spawning grounds of the adult populations. Using hydrographic information collected with the larvae, the effect of surface currents on the observed patterns of distribution is discussed. In the South-East Atlantic, adjacent to the Benguela upwelling system, larvae of the pseudoceanic Lampanyctodes hectoris were found farther offshore (250 - 450 km) than usual. The general flow of the current is parallel to the coast, but upwelling filaments extend offshore. The size distributions of the L. hectoris larvae found, together with the rather low temperature at two of the oceanic stations sampled, indicate that they had been displaced by a filament. In the South-West Indian Ocean, the distribution of larvae of highly oceanic species of lanternfish over the shelf is related to onshore intrusions of the Agulhas Current. The size distributions of Hygophum hygomii and Scopelopsis multipunctatus indicate southward transport of larvae. The presence of larvae of Myctophum selenops and Benthosema pterotum, which have not been documented as adults in the region, indicates not only transport to the area, but also that spawning could be taking place closer to the area than previously reported

The genus Diophus is taxonomically one of the most difficult in the family Myctophidae. In the South-West Indian Ocean, at least 18 species of the genus are found but larval development is known for only two. Larvae and juveniles collected in or near the Agulhas Current provide sufficient data to describe larvae or transforming stages of three species of the genus. Postflexion and transforming specimens of D. diadematus, larvae and transforming stages of another species, either D. brachycephalus or D. Richardsoni, and the complete larval development and transforming stages of D. mollis are described. The pigmentation pattern and photophore development of the larvae and juveniles of these three species, and the postanal pigmentation and presence or absence of suborbital photophores for juveniles of nine additional species, allowed them to be placed in two divergent groups of Diaphus, as suggested by previous authors

Spatial and temporal distribution patterns of lanternfish larvae along the southeast coast of Africa were analysed in relation to oceanographic conditions. Investigations werebased on the plankton collections made during winter, spring and summer months of 1990–1991. The warm southward-flowing Agulhas Current is the dominant large-scale oceanographic feature in the area. The number of species of myctophid larvae collected per cruise ranged from 35 to 38. The most abundant species differed from one season to the other.Afew species showed marked seasonality in their occurrence, e.g. Scopelopsis multipunclatiis only appeared in winter and Hygophum hygomii showed the highest abundances in winter. The majority of species occurred in relatively low concentrations during all three periods. Relatively large concentrations of lanternfish larvae of most species sometimes occurred very close inshore (especially in the north of thestudy area) in water depths of 50–100 m. This was related to shoreward intrusions ofAgulhas Current surface water. Low numbers of larvae of few species appeared on the inshore shelf of the southern sector of the study area, where cold central Indian Ocean water is forced onto the shelf by kinematic upwelling

Adults of three species of lantemfish of the genus Symbolophorus occur along the west and south-east coasts of southern Africa: Symbolophorus boops from the Benguela system and S. barnardi and S. evermanni from the Agulhas Current. Information on the distribution and morphometric features of these three species is provided from ichthyoplankton collections taken from Namibian and South African waters. The distribution of a fourth species, S. kreffti, which appears to be associated with the intrusions of warm Angolan waters into the northern Benguela, is also described
