We present deep SCUBA-2 450 micron imaging of the two GOODS fields, achieving a central rms of 1.14 mJy for the GOODS-N and 1.86 mJy for the GOODS-S. For each field, we give a catalog of >4-sigma detections (79 and 16 sources, respectively). We construct the 450 micron number counts, finding excellent agreement with others from the literature. We match the 450 micron sources to 20 cm data (both fields) and ALMA 870 micron data (GOODS-S) to gauge the accuracy of the 450 micron positions. We use the extensive redshift information available on the fields to test how well redshift can be estimated from simple flux ratios (450 micron/850 micron and 20 cm/850 micron), finding tight correlations. We provide a catalog of candidate high-redshift submillimeter galaxies. We look for evolution in dust temperature with redshift by fitting the spectral energy distributions of the sources, but we do not find any significant redshift evolution after accounting for the far-infrared luminosity. We do not find evidence for 450 micron selection picking out warmer sources than 850 micron selection. We find that a 450 micron selected sample only adds low-redshift (z<1.5) galaxies beyond an 850 micron sample., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ. BackgroundHeart failure (HF) is a leading cause of cardiac morbidity among women, whose risk factors differ from those in men. We used machine-learning approaches to develop risk- prediction models for incident HF in a cohort of postmenopausal women from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI).MethodsWe used 2 machine-learning methods-Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) and Classification and Regression Trees (CART)-to perform variable selection on 1227 baseline WHI variables for the primary outcome of incident HF. These variables were then used to construct separate Cox proportional hazard models, and we compared these results, using receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, against a comparator model built using variables from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) HF prediction model. We analyzed 43,709 women who had 2222 incident HF events; median follow-up was 14.3 years.ResultsLASSO selected 10 predictors, and CART selected 11 predictors. The highest correlation between selected variables was 0.46. In addition to selecting well-established predictors such as age, myocardial infarction, and smoking, novel predictors included physical function, number of pregnancies, number of previous live births and age at menopause. In ROC analysis, the CART-derived model had the highest C-statistic of 0.83 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.81-0.85), followed by LASSO 0.82 (95% CI, 0.81-0.84) and ARIC 0.73 (95% CI, 0.70-0.76).ConclusionsMachine-learning approaches can be used to develop HF risk-prediction models that can have better discrimination compared with an established HF risk model and may provide a basis for investigating novel HF predictors.

The objective of this program was to study serum LDH isoenzyme alterations after subacute irradiation with primates. These alterations were to be related to dose in order to relate the minimum dose necessary to produce significant LDH isoenzyme changes. The doses studied were 200, 300, and 500 rads at a dose rate of 20 rads/min. Blood was collected, and the clear supernatent was analyzed by electrophoresis and histochemical staining for LDH isoenzymes. The isoenzyme change and the altered ratio were calculated and related to dose of irradiation received. It has been established that the band 1-to-band 2 ratio should be 1.0-to-2.5. Values above or below this range are considered abnormal. Depression of the 1-to-2 ratio that lasted 72 hr was seen at 4 hr after irradiation in the 300- and the 500-rad groups. The ratio became markedly elevated to 4.2-to-1 in the 300-rad group at 168 hr. This elevation was not seen in the 200-rad group, whose ratio remained depressed throughout the test period. It appears that 200 rads is not the lower limit of radiation detected by serum LDH isoenzyme alterations but that lower levels may be detectable with these methods. (Author)

The objective of this program was to develop methods for rapid fixation and preservation of central nervous system tissue. During the first phase of work a perfusion system was developed which would optimally preserve brain tissue with chemical fixatives. Various fixatives were tested and glutaldehyde was found to be the preservative of choice. It penetrated rapidly and maintained structural detail. In order to evaluate the efficiency of the fixative system, histochemical, white light microscopic and isoenzyme evaluations were done. Some reduction in histochemical activity was noted, while white light microscopy indicated good preservation of cellular detail. Isoenzyme evaluations indicated up to 90% loss of activity with chemical fixatives. A system was developed which would freeze brain tissue rapidly for biochemical analyses. Accordingly, a cryogenic probe was designed and constructed which will rapidly remove a plug of brain tissue and freeze it to liquid nitrogen temperature (-190C). This instrument can be operated remotely and will remove and freeze a piece of brain tissue in less than 5 sec. Histochemical and isoenzyme assay of frozen tissue plugs indicate optimal enzyme preservation. (Author)

Both the reliability and safety of an adaption kit/warhead system could be increased if nonelectrical monitoring were used. To overcome the disadvantages of electrical monitoring, a new system was designed using fiber optics, or the transmission of light by flexible-glass pipes. No electrical current is used for this monitor system. Induced light is transmitted from component to component, indicating component or subcomponent condition and/or presence. Fiber optics has a further advantage in its adaptability for separating reliability and safety features monitored. Poorly mated or unmated connections will interrupt the light path, thus indicating questionable system reliability. The condition of the components can be monitored by passing a light beam through a prearranged screen or port within each device. A system using this non-conductive method of monitoring requires no special test equipment; only a light source is necessary. (Author)

A new approach to formulating pyrotechnic materials is presented whereby constituent ingredients are bound together in a solid-state lattice. This reduces the batch inconsistencies arising from the traditional approach of combining powders by ensuring the key ingredients are ‘mixed’ in appropriate quantities and are in intimate contact. Further benefits of these types of material are increased safety levels as well as simpler logistics, storage and manufacture. A systematic series of new frameworks comprising fuel and oxidiser agents (group 1 and 2 metal nodes & terephthalic acid derivatives as linkers) has been synthesised and structurally characterised. These new materials have been assessed for pyrotechnic effect by calorimetry and burn tests. Results indicate that these materials exhibit the desired pyrotechnic material properties and the effect can be correlated to the dimensionality of the structure. A new approach to formulating pyrotechnic materials is proposed whereby constituent ingredients are bound together in a solid-state lattice. A series of Metal–organic framework frameworks comprising fuel and oxidiser agents exhibits the desired properties of a pyrotechnic material and this effect is correlated to the dimensionality of the structure.

This study was made in attempt to discover the better method of teaching remedial typewriting to typing students. The experience of the author as a typewriting teacher has shown that transposition of letters and similar errors are the most common mistakes of typists. It appears that the traditional method of continued practice on errors does not produce satisfactory learning effects, and that the time for proving a new and better method of remedial teaching has arrived.
