The thermodynamical conditions of plasma density, temperature, pressure and the neutron density produced in a laser-induced implosion of a deuterium-tritium (DT) filled capsule at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) are the closest laboratory analog of stellar conditions. We plan to investigate neutron-induced reactions on 40Ar, namely the 40Ar(n, 2n)39Ar(t1/2 =268 y), the 40Ar(n,gamma)41Ar(110 min) and the potential rapid two-neutron capture reaction 40Ar(2n,gamma)42Ar(33 y) in the same implosion on an Ar-loaded DT capsule. The chemical inertness of noble gas Ar enables reliable collection of the reaction products. We describe here the technique of Noble-Gas Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (NOGAMS) to be used for ultra-sensitive detection of the long-lived 39Ar and 42Ar at Argonne National Laboratory. A 42Ar(33 y) sample was produced via the slow two-neutron capture reaction 40Ar(2n, gamma)42Ar in a high thermal-neutron flux irradiation. 39Ar and for the first time 42Ar atoms were directly detected in the abundance range 10^-12 -- 10^-13 . The present sensitivity of 42Ar detection is of the order of 104 atoms.

Simulating realistic sedimentary bodies while conditioning all the available data is a major topic of research. We present a new method to simulate the channel morphologies resulting from the deposition processes. It relies on a formal grammar system, the Lindenmayer system, or L-system. The L-system puts together channel segments based on user-defined rules and parameters. The succession of segments is then interpreted to generate non-rational uniform B-splines representing straight to meandering channels. Constraints attract or repulse the channel from the data during the channel development. They enable to condition various data types, from well data to probability cubes or a confinement. The application to a synthetic case highlights the method's ability to manage various data while preserving at best the channel morphology.

Statistical metrics can be used to analyse the morphology of natural or simulated karst systems; they allow describing, comparing, and quantifying their geometry and topology. In this paper, we present and discuss a set of such metrics. We study their properties and their usefulness based on a set of more than 30 karstic networks mapped by speleologists. The data set includes some of the largest explored cave systems in the world and represents a broad range of geological and speleogenetic conditions allowing us to test the proposed metrics, their variability, and their usefulness for the discrimination of different morphologies. All the proposed metrics require that the topographical survey of the caves are first converted to graphs consisting of vertices and edges. This data preprocessing includes several quality check operations and some corrections to ensure that the karst is represented as accurately as possible. The statistical parameters relating to the geometry of the system are then directly computed on the graphs, while the topological parameters are computed on a reduced version of the network focusing only on its structure. Among the tested metrics, we include some that were previously proposed such as tortuosity or the Howard's coefficients. We also investigate the possibility to use new metrics derived from graph theory. In total, 21 metrics are introduced, discussed in detail, and compared on the basis of our data set. This work shows that orientation analysis and, in particular, the entropy of the orientation data can help to detect the existence of inception features. The statistics on branch length are useful to describe the extension of the conduits within the network. Rather surprisingly, the tortuosity does not vary very significantly. It could be heavily influenced by the survey methodology. The degree of interconnectivity of the network, related to the presence of maze patterns, can be measured using different metrics such as the How

Turbiditic channels evolve continuously in relation to erosion-deposition events. They are often gathered into complexes and display various stacking patterns. These patterns have a direct impact on the connectivity of sand-rich deposits. Being able to reproduce them in stochastic simulations is thus of significant importance. We propose a geometrical and descriptive approach to stochastically control the channel stacking patterns. This approach relies on the simulation of an initial channel using a Lindenmayer system. This system migrates proportionally to a migration factor through either a forward or a backward migration process. The migration factor is simulated using a sequential Gaussian simulation or a multiple-point simulation. Avulsions are performed using a Lindenmayer system, similarly to the initial channel simulation. This method makes it possible to control the connectivity between the channels by adjusting the geometry of the migrating areas. It furnishes encouraging results with both forward and backward migration processes, even if some aspects such as data conditioning still need to be explored.

Very different connectivity patterns may arise from using different simulation methods or sets of pa-rameters, and therefore different flow properties. This paper proposes a systematic method to compare ensemble of categorical simulations from a static connectivity point of view. The differences of static con-nectivity cannot always be distinguished using two point statistics. In addition, multiple-point histograms only provide a statistical comparison of patterns regardless of the connectivity. Thus, we propose to char-acterize the static connectivity from a set of 12 indicators based on the connected components of the realizations. Some indicators describe the spatial repartition of the connected components, others their global shape or their topology through the component skeletons. We also gather all the indicators into dissimilarity values to easily compare hundreds of realizations. Heat maps and multidimensional scal-ing then facilitate the dissimilarity analysis. The application to a synthetic case highlights the impact of the grid size on the connectivity and the indicators. Such impact disappears when comparing samples of the realizations with the same sizes. The method is then able to rank realizations from a referring model based on their static connectivity. This application also gives rise to more practical advices. The multidimensional scaling appears as a powerful visualization tool, but it also induces dissimilarity mis-representations: it should always be interpreted cautiously with a look at the point position confidence. The heat map displays the real dissimilarities and is more appropriate for a detailed analysis. The com-parison with a multiple-point histogram method shows the benefit of the connected components: the large-scale connectivity seems better characterized by our indicators, especially the skeleton indicators.

Radioisotopes, produced in stars and ejected into the Interstellar Medium, are important for constraining stellar and early Solar System (ESS) models. In particular, the half-life of the radioisotope, 60Fe, can have an impact on calculations for the timing for ESS events, the distance to nearby Supernovae, and the brightness of individual, non-steady-state 60Fe gamma ray sources in the Galaxy. A half-life measurement has been undertaken at the University of Notre Dame and measurements of the 60Fe/56Fe concentration of our samples using Accelerator Mass Spectrometry has begun. This result will be coupled with an activity measurement of the isomeric decay in 60Co, which is the decay product of 60Fe. Preliminary half-life estimates of (2.53±0.24)×106 years seem to confirm the recent measurement by Rugel et al. (2009).

The extinct p-process nuclide 146Sm (t1/2 = 103 ± 5 Myr) is known to have been present in the Early-Solar System and has been proposed as an astrophysical chronometer. 146Sm is also intensely used to date meteorite and planetary differentiation processes, enhancing the importance of an accurate knowledge of the 146Sm half-life. We are engaged in a new determination of the 146Sm half-life in which the 146Sm/147Sm atom ratio is determined by accelerator mass spectrometry at the ATLAS facility of Argonne National Laboratory. In order to reduce systematic errors in the AMS determination of the 146Sm/147Sm ratios (in the range of 10-7-10-9), 146Sm and 147Sm ions were alternately counted in the same detector in the focal plane of a gas-filled magnet, respectively in continuous-wave and attenuated mode. Quantitative attenuation is obtained with the 12 MHz pulsed and ns-bunched ATLAS beam by chopping beam pulses with an RF sweeper in a ratio (digitally determined) down to 1:106. Initial experiments at the ATLAS facility [Nucl. Instr. and Meth. B 92 (1994) 241] resulted in a clear detection of cosmogenic Ar-39 signal at the natural level. The present paper summarizes the recent developments of Ar-39 AMS measurements at ATLAS: the use of an electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) positive ion source equipped with a special quartz liner to reduce K-39 background, the development of a gas handling system for small volume argon samples, the acceleration of Ar-39(8+) ions to 232 MeV, and the final separation of Ar-39 from K-39 in a gas-filled spectrograph. The first successful AXIS measurements of Ar-39 in ocean water samples from the Southern Atlantic ventilation experiment (SAVE) are reported. Published by Elsevier B.V.

The radionuclide Ar-39 is produced in the atmosphere by cosmic rays and has an isotopic abundance of 8.1 x 10(-16). Because its half life (T-1/2 = 269 years) is well matched to the time periods involved in the oceanic currents around the Earth, the measurement of the Ar-39 isotopic ratio is an ideal tool to date ocean water from different depths. It would complement the information gained by the C-14 measurements (T-1/2 = 5730 years). However, the measurement of the isotopic ratio Ar-39/Ar-40 is a technical challenge: 1 L of modern ocean water contains similar to6500 atoms of Ar-39, and produces similar to17 decays per year. Although it has been possible to detect the Ar-39 decays in large volumes of sea water by using the low level counting technique, the possibility of measuring the number of Ar-39 atoms faster and in smaller samples using the accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) technique would be a major breakthrough for this type of measurement. The development of a viable AMS method for Ar-39 has been underway for several years at Argonne National Laboratory, and is presently hampered by the presence of stable K-39 ions coming from the ion source. Although the intensity of this isobaric contaminant is low (similar topA extracted from the source), it has to be compared with the Ar-39 beam intensity (atoms per minutes). In order to separate, these two beams (whose mass difference is only 1.6 x 10(-5)), the intensity of the K-39 beam coming from the ion source has to be reduced by several orders of magnitude. This reduction has been investigated both at Argonne National Laboratory and at Louvain-la-Neuve. Two techniques have been tried out. In the first, a quartz liner is used to provide a clean surface, while in the second these impurities are buried in a SiO2 layer formed in situ by running the source with a mixture of silane and oxygen. DEMON is a detector array for neutrons emitted in heavy ion induced reactions at low to intermediate energies. The neutron detection efficiency of some single DEMON modules has been measured in the energy range 8-21 MeV, with detection thresholds down to 0.1 MeV equivalent-electron (MeVee). The influence on the efficiency of cross talk, neutron-gamma and neutron-charged particle discrimination techniques was found to be negligibly small. Monte Carlo simulations have been performed and are compared with the experimental data. The relative weight of the interaction channel C-12(n,n'gamma) in the organic liquid scintillator was determined experimentally. Taking into account observed saturation effects in the detector output, a calibration method is proposed for high light outputs, based on the energy loss of cosmic ray muons.
