La percepción general acerca de la agricultura digital es que podría ofrecer soluciones para la producción de alimentos de manera más eficiente y sostenible. No obstante, es esencial reconocer que la implementación de esta tecnología involucra una serie de factores que nos llevan a considerar que, en algunos casos, los posibles beneficios pueden acompañarse de perjuicios significativos. Desde la perspectiva de la sociología, resulta de suma importancia analizar en profundidad cómo la adopción de la agricultura digital repercute en las comunidades agrícolas, especialmente en los campesinos tradicionales. Estos cambios tecnológicos no solo transforman los métodos de producción, sino que también tienen un impacto en las estructuras sociales y en la cultura arraigada en estas comunidades. El propósito fundamental de este artículo es llevar a cabo un análisis exploratorio sobre las implicaciones que conlleva la adopción de la agricultura digital en el contexto de los campesinos tradicionales. Esto implica evaluar tanto los beneficios potenciales como los perjuicios que puedan surgir, considerando no solo los aspectos económicos, sino también los sociales y culturales. A partir de este análisis, aspiramos a proporcionar una base sólida que permita orientar futuras investigaciones hacia los aspectos más relevantes que surjan de este primer estudio. En última instancia, nuestro objetivo es comprender cómo los avances tecnológicos en la agricultura están transformando las vidas y las identidades de las comunidades rurales. However, it is essential to recognize that the implementation of this technology involves a number of factors that lead us to consider that, in some cases, the potential benefits may be accompanied by significant detriments. From a sociological perspective, it is of utmost importance to analyze in depth how the adoption of digital agriculture impacts farming communities, especially traditional farmers. These technological changes not only transform production methods, but also have an impact on the social structures and culture embedded in these communities. The main purpose of this article is to conduct an exploratory analysis of the implications of adopting digital agriculture in the context of traditional farmers. This involves assessing both the potential benefits and the detriments that may arise, considering not only the economic aspects, but also the social and cultural ones. From this analysis, we aspire to provide a solid foundation to guide future research towards the most relevant aspects that emerge from this first study. Ultimately, our goal is to understand how technological advances in agriculture are transforming the lives and identities of rural communities. This will allow us to make informed decisions about how to balance the benefits and challenges presented by this process of agricultural transformation.

Introduction: Software development is a sociotechnical activity that requires both social and technical factors to achieve any proposed objective. These factors characterize Sociotechnical Congruence (STC), which focuses on the proper use of soft skills such as coordination, communication, and cooperation within software development teams. Objective: The objective of this study is to introduce a measurement tool that enables the assessment of perceptions among members of a software development community, based on 42 questions formulated across three dimensions: communication, cooperation, and coordination. Method: The validation of the measurement instrument was carried out through expert judgment. Nine professionals were selected to evaluate the instrument using four quality criteria: sufficiency, clarity, relevance, and coherence. To determine the agreement among the experts, the Fleiss' Kappa coefficient was employed, and Landis and Koch's criteria were applied to measure the degree of concordance. Results: The agreement strength for each dimension was substantial and nearly perfect. Considerable agreement was identified for the sufficiency, coherence, and clarity quality criteria, with clarity having the highest coefficient (0.85). The relevance quality criterion showed moderate agreement, being the lowest (0.583). A significance level of 5% was considered, with the clarity quality criterion being the most significant, with a p-value of 0.02. Conclusions: Once the adjustments to the instrument are made, it can be used to measure perceptions of the dimensions: communication, cooperation, and coordination within software development communities., Introducción: El desarrollo de software es una actividad sociotécnica que requiere de factores sociales y técnicos para el logro de cualquier objetivo propuesto. Estos factores caracterizan a la Congruencia Sociotécnica (STC), que se centra en el uso debido de habilidades blandas como la coordinación, comunicación y cooperación de los equipos de desarrollo de software. Objetivo: El objetivo de este estudio es presentar un instrumento de medición que permite determinar las percepciones de los miembros de una comunidad de desarrollo de software a partir de 42 preguntas formuladas a través de tres dimensiones: comunicación, cooperación y coordinación. Metodología: La validación del instrumento de medición se realizó por juicio de expertos; se seleccionaron 9 profesionales, quienes evaluaron el instrumento mediante 4 criterios de calidad: suficiencia, claridad, relevancia y coherencia. Para determinar el acuerdo entre los expertos, se utilizó el coeficiente Kappa Fleiss y, para medir el grado de concordancia, se aplicó Landis y Koch. Resultados: La fuerza de concordancia para cada dimensión fue considerable y casi perfecta. Para los criterios de calidad del suficiencia, coherencia y claridad, se identificó una concordancia considerable, siendo la claridad el coeficiente más alto (0.85). El criterio de calidad relevancia fue moderado, siendo la más baja (0.583). Se tuvo en cuenta un nivel de significancia del 5%, siendo el criterio de calidad claridad el más relevante con un valor p=0.02. Conclusiones: Realizado los ajustes al instrumento, podrá ser utilizado para medir las percepciones de las dimensiones: comunicación, cooperación y coordinación en las comunidades de desarrollo de software.

Objetivo: El objetivo del estudio es analizar sobre un modelo de gestión turística para fomentar emprendimientos turísticos y el desarrollo local de las comunidades de la provincia de Manabí Ecuador, evidenciando el compromiso y articulación, empresas privadas, academia - mercado y normas vigentes. This report aims to investigate the community engagement process so planners can more effectively work with communities and reckon with the historical trauma caused by planners in the past. Planning as an industry is responsible for the forceful removal of communities under the name of “urban decay” and is a direct cause of why some communities remain impoverished today. This history has not been long forgotten; it continues to live on in the communities directly affected, and trust when working with public agencies is low. Public agencies must understand this trauma as they work with these communities to build a better future. This report chronicles the Little Tokyo/Arts District Station joint development process by interviewing Little Tokyo residents and other stakeholders involved with the process and examining archival documents. While relatively small, Little Tokyo has a long history of asserting its autonomy in community development issues. I highlight the history of community-based organization and planning that has sustained Little Tokyo into the community it remains today. Through my findings, I recommend a history-informed planning process among public agencies. A holistic approach to planning must be taken that considers the community context in historical and contemporary terms. While the process of community engagement can be long and expensive, it is a way for public agencies to repair their relationship with communities that have been wronged in the past.

In this study, we focus on automating road marking extraction from the HDOT MLS point cloud database, managed by Mandli. Mandli is a company specializing in highway data collection, including LiDAR. Mandli has cooperated with various Department of Transportation throughout the United States. Here, we focus on infrastructure elements related to non-motorized travel modes, supporting the ongoing Complete Streets efforts in Hawaii. Point cloud data include different colors that represent differences in elevation and intensity values. Based on a visual inspection, road markings can be observed within these point clouds. The long-term objective of this study is to develop a framework and approach for automating the detection of these infrastructure elements, based on deep learning approaches. For this project, a YOLOv5 (You Only Look Once version 5) image object detection model was trained with the HDOT point cloud data. YOLO is a family of deep learning models designed for fast object detection; the latest published version is the 5th version. The focus here is on non-motorized objects, such as crosswalks, bike lanes and bike boxes. The same approach can be extended to other markings as well, which we plan for subsequent studies.

Contemporary Argentine writers, such as Gainza, Cabezón Cámara, and Aira, address the pressing issue of cultural divisions in their works. They use communicative strategies that combine languages and artistic genres to weave intricate narratives that transcend partisan conflicts. Its holistic vision encompasses intercultural and interartistic perspectives, which challenge conventional notions of community. This article argues that the representation of cultural divisions in this literature constitutes an integrative proposal with the potential for reconciliation.

Mozambique has undocumented forest patches that are cultural landscapes and locally protected as heritage sites. Using the case of Inhambane Province, in this paper, we present the status and purposes of forest patches protected by local communities and discuss threats working against local protection. Findings point out that these heritage forests are reservoirs for biodiversity conservation and the local system of conservation is effective, but there are challenges local custodians face to safeguard heritage forests, ranging from illegal logging, misrecognition of customary protection and lack of legislation enforcement. We argue that the existence of heritage forests requires collaboration between entities dealing with forests, heritage and conservation. We suggest strategies to increase protection in the Inhambane Province and the Mozambique context. This will support local institutions in the protection of heritage forests, as biodiversity reservoirs and in keeping heritage practices and the customary protection of heritage forests alive.

This thesis explores the concept of regenerative tourism, focusing on Hawai’i - a popular tourist destination renowned for its natural beauty yet facing significant environmental and social impacts from tourism. This thesis explores the paradox of balancing the economic necessity of tourism while preserving local communities and the environment. This study aims to investigate the implementation of regenerative tourism in Hawai’i, focusing on its interaction with local communities to address environmental and social well-being. Through interviews with Native Hawaiians, local communities, tourism industry employees, and tourists, the study explores perceptions and collaborations within the tourism industry. The research employed the theoretical frameworks of Regenerative Development, Communities of Practice and Transformational Leadership to deepen the analysis of the current implementation and effectiveness of regenerative practices in Hawai’i. Findings reveal that while there is an awareness of the need for inclusion in regenerative practices, increased efforts are necessary to include Indigenous voices and ensure economic sustainability for local communities. The recommendations of this study highlight the importance of respect, inclusion, and empowerment of Native Hawaiians, advocating for active engagement with local communities to form reciprocal relationships that promote learning and growth. The theoretical lens offers practical tools and applications to address the expressed needs of community members. Effective implementation of these regenerative practices has the potential to transform Hawai’i into a destination where tourism not only benefits the economy but also enriches the environment and local communities. Objective: An intangible resource called social capital is essential for promoting social cohesion, advancing the economy, and improving the general welfare of people and communities. It may be divided into two categories: bridging social capital, which deals with interpersonal connections between various groups or communities, and bonding social capital, which is concerned with interpersonal connections inside a certain group or community. Menthod: The approach utilized in this article is a literature review, a method of gathering information that entails comprehending and exploring theories found in different literature sources relevant to the research. Result: In order to comprehend how social capital affects social cohesion and community development, as well as the similarities and variations between urban and rural communities in Indonesia, it is important to first understand how social capital is formed and maintained. Conclusions: The research assesses the challenges and possible benefits related to increasing social capital in Indonesia's urban and rural locations.

Background In 2005, Nigeria adopted the Reach Every Ward (REW) strategy to improve vaccination coverage for children, 0–23 months. By 2015, Ogun state had full coverage in 12 of its 20 local government areas but eight had pockets of unimmunized children, with the highest burden (37%) in Remo-North. Since the exact factors responsible for this trend were not known, participatory action research (PAR) was introduced. Through iterative processes of reflection and action, among communities, health workers and local government officials, insights into the relevant problems identified by different groups in the community were discussed and as their realistic, context-specific solutions designed and implemented. However, a knowledge gap was that there was little known about whether and how PAR would lead to improved access to immunization services and change of immunization-seeking behaviour in communities in Nigeria. This thesis aims to gain insight into if and how PAR can be used to develop context-specific strategies to improve access to and utilization of immunization in Nigeria. Methods The PAR intervention took place from 2016 to 2017. It involved two (4-month) cycles of dialogue and action between community members, frontline health workers and local government officials in two wards of Remo North, facilitated by the research team. The PAR involved outcome and process assessments which included four studies (two qualitative and two mixed methods studies). Data was analysed using the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) vaccine hesitancy framework. Results The studies showed that immunization utilization and access are influenced by interlinked community and health services issues. Involving community, health service and policy actors in the PAR is critical to addressing immunization access and utilisation challenges and ensuring that strategies are adjusted to suit the contexts. Doctor of Ministry (DMin), The everyday work that creates a city’s experience of life is often relegated to the margins or completely written off the page in most churches. Rather than continuing this centuries old pattern, the Church can seize the moment and elevate it by placing everyday work in the center of what God is doing in their city. If God is indeed making all things new and his ultimate vision is a new, flourishing city, then work must point toward that city. When it does, it serves God and neighbor, making it fully worthy of the oft-limited term “ministry.” The sacred-secular divide and the clergy-laity divide perniciously stint a redemptive imagination and vision for everyday work. Christians in every industry suffer a relegation of their work to the sidelines of God’s mission, limiting their impact to the margins of their time in church and nonprofit volunteerism. This doctoral project seeks to demonstrate that the Church must reframe and envision how everyday work is integral to God’s vision for a flourishing city. Chapter 1 describes the context of the project, which is large U.S. cities. Special focus is placed on the state of those cities sociologically, the state of work, and the state of the Church in those cities. Chapter 2 reviews work and city theologies and their overlaps. Chapter 3 builds on this discussion to articulate the vocation of God’s people, God’s people in their vocations, and the Flourishing City as the telos of work and the theological foundation for the project. Chapter 4 describes the research questions and learning objectives of the new curriculum, The Pie & the Pathway, and chapter 5 details the curriculum’s implementation and assessment. A facilitator’s guide is included along with pre- and post-survey assessments in the appendices.

Background: The present-day food system is a key driver of climate change and biodiversity loss, making it imperative for populations to shift towards more sustainable diets. The involvement of youth in this transition is vital because they are in a formative period where their identities, values, and norms, including their food behaviours, are being shaped. Special attention should be paid to youth in practical education because they are often overlooked in existing studies, yet evidence suggests they may lack the necessary resources to support dietary changes, resulting in lower levels of pro-environmental food-related behaviours. The aim of the FLY (Food-related Lifestyles in Youth) project is to study how sustainable food-related lifestyles and underlying factors develop in early adolescence, particularly in Dutch youth in practical education, how these spread in social networks, and to develop community-level intervention strategies to support youths’ transition to sustainable food-related behaviours. Methods/design: The FLY-project adopts a mixed-method approach. First, two literature reviews are conducted. A systematic review assesses how capabilities, opportunities and motivation are associated with sustainable food behaviours in youth, and how these elements interrelate in determining sustainable food-related lifestyles. A scoping review studies community-level interventions that target sustainable and healthy food-related behaviours. Second, focus groups are conducted to explore the barriers and facilitating factors concerning capabilities, opportunities, and motivations that Dutch youth in practical-level education experience to transition to more sustainable food-related lifestyles. Third, a cohort survey study is conducted to track the dynamic interplay between capabilities, opportunities, motivation, and changes in specific sustainable food behaviours over time, and to assess the diffusion of sustainable food-related lifestyles via social (media) ne

The root microbiome is shaped by plant root activity, which selects specific microbial taxa from the surrounding soil. This influence on the microorganisms and soil chemistry in the immediate vicinity of the roots has been referred to as the rhizosphere effect. Understanding the traits that make bacteria successful in the rhizosphere is critical for developing sustainable agriculture solutions. In this study, we compared the growth rate potential, a complex trait that can be predicted from bacterial genome sequences, to functional traits encoded by proteins. We analyzed 84 paired rhizosphere- and soil-derived 16S rRNA gene amplicon datasets from 18 different plants and soil types, performed differential abundance analysis, and estimated growth rates for each bacterial genus. We found that bacteria with higher growth rate potential consistently dominated the rhizosphere, and this trend was confirmed in different bacterial phyla using genome sequences of 3270 bacterial isolates and 6707 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from 1121 plant- and soil-associated metagenomes. We then identified which functional traits were enriched in MAGs according to their niche or growth rate status. We found that predicted growth rate potential was the main feature for differentiating rhizosphere and soil bacteria in machine learning models, and we then analyzed the features that were important for achieving faster growth rates, which makes bacteria more competitive in the rhizosphere. As growth rate potential can be predicted from genomic data, this work has implications for understanding bacterial community assembly in the rhizosphere, where many uncultivated bacteria reside.

Plant productivity varies due to environmental heterogeneity, and theory suggests that plant diversity can reduce this variation. While there is strong evidence of diversity effects on temporal variability of productivity, whether this mechanism extends to variability across space remains elusive. Here we determine the relationship between plant diversity and spatial variability of productivity in 83 grasslands, and quantify the effect of experimentally increased spatial heterogeneity in environmental conditions on this relationship. We found that communities with higher plant species richness (alpha and gamma diversity) have lower spatial variability of productivity as reduced abundance of some species can be compensated for by increased abundance of other species. In contrast, high species dissimilarity among local communities (beta diversity) is positively associated with spatial variability of productivity, suggesting that changes in species composition can scale up to affect productivity. Experimentally increased spatial environmental heterogeneity weakens the effect of plant alpha and gamma diversity, and reveals that beta diversity can simultaneously decrease and increase spatial variability of productivity. Our findings unveil the generality of the diversity-stability theory across space, and suggest that reduced local diversity and biotic homogenization can affect the spatial reliability of key ecosystem functions.

This article analyses four of the most prominent city discourses and introduces the lens of urban vitalism as an overarching interdisciplinary concept of cities as places of transformation and change. We demonstrate the value of using urban vitalism as a lens to conceptualize and critically discuss different notions on smart, inclusive, resilient and sustainable just cities. Urban vitalism offers a process-based lens which enables us to understand cities as places of transformation and change, with people and other living beings at its core. The aim of the article is to explore how the lens of vitalism can help us understand and connect ongoing interdisciplinary academic debates about urban development and vice versa, and how these ongoing debates inform our understanding of urban vitalism.

The objective of this article is to analyze the neighborhood insecurity and security, from the perspective of neighbors, community leaders and key actors of a social intervention done in a vulnerable territory of Santiago, Chile. Qualitative methodology was used, eleven interviews were conducted, and five focus groups were created, in which 46 people participated. Institutional and community articulation for integral security is the main result. The sensation of insecurity is described, associated to ‘the external’, which produces learned hopelessness, isolation and confinement inside homes, as well as low neighborhood participation. In contrast, the sensation of security is presented, associated with ‘the internal’, with the strategies of self-defense and personal and community strengthening. The effects of these strategies are reported, focusing on information and group reflection on issues relevant to security, the strengthening of neighborhood relations, and the care and appropriation of public spaces. The scope of the intervention is recognized in relation to increasing the feeling of security and its limitation in terms of decreasing the feeling of insecurity; and recommendations to move towards integral security are offered., L'objectif de cet article est d'analyser l'insécurité et la sécurité dans les quartiers à partir de la perspective des voisins, des leaders communautaires et des acteurs clés d'une intervention sociale réalisée dans un territoire vulnérable de Santiago, au Chili. Une méthodologie qualitative a été utilisée, onze entretiens ont été menés et cinq groupes de discussion ont été créés, auxquels 46 personnes ont participé. En résultat, l'articulation institutionnelle et communautaire pour la sécurité intégrale est mise en avant. La sensation d'insécurité, associée à ‘l'extérieur’, qui engendre un désespoir acquis, l'isolement et le confinement dans les maisons, ainsi qu'une faible participation dans le quartier. Como resultado, é proposta a articulação institucional e comunitária para a segurança integral. É descrita a sensação de insegurança, associada ao ‘externo’, que produz desesperança aprendida, o isolamente e o confinamento em casa, bem como a baixa participação no bairro. Também é descrita a sensação de segurança, associada ao ‘interno’, com estratégias de autodefesa e fortalecimento pessoal e comunitário. São relatados os efeitos dessas estratégias, com foco na informação e reflexão em grupo sobre questões relevantes para a segurança, no fortalecimento das relações de vizinhança e no cuidado e apropriação dos espaços públicos. É reconhecido como alcance da intervenção o aumento na sensação de segurança, e como limitação o não diminuição da sensação de insegurança, sendo oferecidas recomendações para avançar em direção à segurança integral., El objetivo de este artículo es analizar la inseguridad y seguridad barrial desde la perspectiva de vecinos, lideresas comunitarias y actores clave de una intervención social realizada en un territorio vulnerable en Santiago de Chile. Se utilizó metodología cualitativa, se realizaron once entrevistas y se crearon cinco grupos focales, en los cuales participaron 46 personas. Como resultado, se plantea la articulación institucional y comunitaria para la seguridad integral. Se describe la sensación de inseguridad, asociada a ‘lo externo’, que produce una desesperanza aprendida, aislamiento y encierro en los hogares, así como una baja participación barrial. Se describe también la sensación de seguridad, asociada a ‘lo interno’, con las estrategias de autodefensa y de fortalecimiento personal y comunitario. Se reportan los efectos de estas estrategias, centrados en informarse y reflexionar grupalmente sobre la seguridad, el fortalecimiento de las relaciones vecinales, y el cuidado y apropiación de los espacios públicos. Se reconoce como alcance de la intervención el aumento en la sensación de seguridad, y como limitación el no disminuir la sensación de inseguridad, y se ofrecen recomendaciones para avanzar hacia la seguridad integral.

The legal problem that will guide this investigation is based on the repercussion that it will have within the Ecuadorian justice system, with the application of Convention 169 of the International Labor Organization (ILO), in relation to compliance with sanctions other than imprisonment for people belonging to indigenous communities, peoples and nationalities in Ecuador in legal proceedings. The methodology will be guided with the purpose of basing it on current regulations, whether national or international. It is known that Convention 169 clearly provides that preference should be given to types of sanctions other than imprisonment, from which follows the obligation of the operators of the justice system of the ordinary jurisdiction, who hear criminal proceedings and those who are followed against people belonging to indigenous communities, peoples and nationalities in Ecuador, penalties other than imprisonment must be applied, despite what is already established in the Comprehensive Organic Penal Code. That is why, within this investigation, the feasibility of the application of this international agreement in the different judicial processes will be verified., El problema jurídico que guiará esta investigación se fundamenta en la repercusión que tendrá dentro de la justicia del Ecuador, con la aplicación del convenio 169 de la Organización Internacional del Trabajo (OIT), en relación con el cumplimiento de sanciones distintas al encarcelamiento para personas pertenecientes a las comunidades, pueblos y nacionalidades indígenas en el Ecuador en los procesos judiciales. La metodología estará guiada con la finalidad de fundamentar mediante la normativa vigente ya sea esta nacional como internacional. Se conoce que el convenio 169 dispone claramente que se deberá dar la preferencia a tipos de sanción distintos del encarcelamiento, de la cual se desprende la obligación que tienen los operadores del sistema de justicia de la jurisdicción ordinaria, que conozcan procesos penales y los que sean seguidos en contra de las personas pertenecientes a las comunidades, pueblos y nacionalidades indígenas en el Ecuador, se deberá aplicar penas distintas al encarcelamiento, a pesar de lo que ya establece el Código Orgánico Integral Penal. Es por ello, que dentro de esta investigación se verificara la factibilidad de la aplicación de este convenio internacional en los diferentes procesos judiciales.

With the ongoing climate crisis, it is unacceptable to allow our communal premises to stay empty for more than half of the time. We need more efficient use of premises, but also need to make sure that we are not losing the education quality for the children. The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) includes creating high quality education and sustainable cities. To work towards the goals we can, when planning a new school, combine it with community services including scout activities to create more efficient premises while simultaneously improving the experience for the pupils. The project is in Riksten, where Botkyrka kommun is developing a new area. It is a school for 810 pupils with a ground floor that holds more public areas, where most are shared between the school and other activities. The spaces that are not shared or used by the school are primarily storage areas. The first floor is made up of areas for the different grades with access from both the ground floor and the schoolyard that spreads out over the roof of the remaining building. The project is presenting one solution for efficient use of a school building, while highlighting important aspects to take into consideration when creating school buildings in order to facilitate the sharing of premises.

I takt med att sociala medier har växt sig större har konsumenters shoppingbeteende förändrats. Inköp av produkter sker numera i allt större utsträckning på sociala medier. Den senaste plattformen TikTok har påskyndat förändringen av informationssökning med sitt korta videoformat som låter användare dela information om produkter samtidigt som de har roligt. Studiens syfte är att undersöka hur TikTok som plattform används vid informationssökning och hur konsumenterna påverkar varandra vid användandet av TikTok. Kvalitativa semistrukturerade intervjuer har genomförts för att samla in material för att besvara studiens syfte. Fem teman kring konsumenters upplevelse av TikTok har identifierats genom en tematisk analys. Teorierna electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) och flow har använts för att analysera de fem temana. Resultatet visar att TikTok är en källa till inspiration som kan leda till konsumtion och nöje. På TikTok skapas en ny form av communities som är löst sammansatta till skillnad från communities som har varit slutna på andra sociala plattformar. Flow är en betydande del av den underhållande upplevelsen och engagemanget på TikTok men studien visar också att flow kan leda till negativa effekter. Studien har ett begränsat omfång på grund av urval av respondenter men kan användas som grund för vidare forskningen kring flow och communities på TikTok då den visar att detta påverkar konsumenters informationssökning., As social media has grown in popularity, consumers’ shopping behaviour has changed. The purchase of products is now increasingly done on social media. The latest platform TikTok has accelerated the change in information seeking with its short video format that allows users to share information about products while having fun. The purpose of the study is to investigate how TikTok as a platform is used when searching for information and how consumers influence each other when using TikTok. Qualitative semi-structured interviews have been conducted to collect material to answer the study's purpose. Five themes surrounding consumers' experience of TikTok have been identified through a thematic analysis. The theories electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) and flow have been used to analyse the five themes. The result shows that TikTok is a source of inspiration that can lead to consumption and enjoyment. TikTok has formed a new form of communities that are loosely composed, unlike closed communities on other social platforms. Flow is a significant part of the joyful experience and engagement on TikTok, but the study also shows that flow can lead to negative effects. The study has a limited scope due to the selection of respondents, but can be used as a basis for further research on flow and communities on TikTok as it shows that this affects consumers' information search. This study will be written in swedish.

Investigating functional traits is an important tool for understanding fungal communities, yet ecological functions of fungal pigmentation remain poorly investigated. Recent studies support the thermal-melanism hypothesis for fungal color lightness in relation to macroclimate, but it remains unclear if microclimate also affects fungal pigmentation. In this study I use fruit bodies of wood-living polypores to further investigate this subject. While previous studies have used database-derived color lightness from photos often taken under unknown and non-standardized conditions, here I extract all color values from standardized photos taken in situ. In contrast to previous studies that have only examined fungal color lightness, I also studied the other components of the CIE L*a*b* color space, which may be related to e.g. protection, thermoregulation or signaling. I investigated community-level fungal pigmentation of pore surfaces and caps of polypores in fragmented forest patches in northern Sweden, in relation to microclimate proxies, deadwood availability and surrounding landscape structure. Two types of multiple linear regression models were used, one for community weighted means (CWM) and one for the coefficient of variance (CV) of patch level pigmentation. While no support was found for the thermal-melanism hypothesis in this study, saturation in the yellow spectrum was positively related to canopy cover and forest patch size. Variance in lightness of pore surfaces and in saturation in the red spectrum of caps was also positively related to diversity of decay stages and forest patch size respectively. These results indicate previously unknown relationships between fungal pigmentation and environment which warrant further research.

Poverty is perceived as an urban problem, yet many in rural Britain also experience hardship. This book explores how and why people in rural areas experience and negotiate poverty and social exclusion. It examines the role of societal processes, individual circumstances, sources of support (markets; state; voluntary organisations; family and friends) and the role of place. It concludes that the UK’s welfare system is poorly adapted to rural areas, with the COVID-19 pandemic, Brexit and cutbacks exacerbating pressures. Voluntary organisations increasingly fill gaps in support left by the state. Invaluable to those in policy and practice, the book recommends a combination of person-based and place-based approaches to tackle rural poverty.

Due to socio-economic and climatic changes around the world, large outdoor fires in the built environment have become one of the global issues that threaten billions of people. The devastating effects of them are indicative of weaknesses in existing building codes and standard testing methodologies. This is due in part to our limited understanding of large outdoor fire exposures, including the ones from wildland to communities and within communities. To address this problem, the Ignition Resistance Committee (IRC) of the International Association of the Fire Safety Science working group ‘Large Outdoor Fires and the Built Environment’ was established. This manuscript is the result of one of the IRC's initiatives to review current knowledge on exposures associated with large outdoor fires, identify existing knowledge gaps, and provide recommendations for future research. The article consists of two sections: the wildland fire exposure to the built environment and the settlement fire exposure to structures. Each section presents a comprehensive review of experimental and numerical studies of exposure mechanisms (flame contact and convection, radiation, and firebrands). This report was created to aid future business plans to build local Black-centered and -led cooperative businesses that will maintain sustainable growth, pay livable wages, and operate under eco-friendly standards. My client is Downtown Crenshaw Rising (DCR) and Worker Ownership Resources and Cooperative Services (WORCS). My overall research question is: What is the feasibility of establishing and maintaining a manufacturing worker-owned cooperative in the Crenshaw District and South Los Angeles area?My client had an interest in producing electric vehicle charging stations because of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (2021) The federal goal is to create a network of 500,000 EV chargers by 2030 across America’s highways and communities. Federal dollars are flowing to support its production, largely in California.My findings depicted that are three related primary barriers my client may face trying to open this cooperative. The first is the capital-intensive nature of the business. The second is the lack of experience in EVSE manufacturing within the Crenshaw community. The third is that this lack of experience reduces opportunities for alternative sources of capital. As of now, the feasibility of my client creating a manufacturing cooperative to produce electric vehicle charging stations is very low.With client interest, I gathered information to help understand the path to creating an electrician cooperative to install and fix stations. I researched a path acknowledging the skills needed, training options, and available funding in the industry. Opening an electrician cooperative is more feasible than manufacturing, especially when starting with licensed worker-owners.

This study aims to identify policy interventions that can improve the quality of life and increase equitable outcomes for residents of unincorporated communities in LA County's Supervisorial District 2. The researchers utilized a mixed-methods approach consisting of qualitative interviews and historical, spatial, and statistical analyses. Key findings include the role of historic racial and economic bias in annexation and incorporation decisions, significantly worse physical and mental health, food insecurity, and higher unemployment rates in unincorporated areas compared to cities, and primary concerns of residents being housing, service quality, displacement, and increasing local representation. The researchers evaluated four policy options, including EIFDs, opportunity zones, expanding the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, and town councils, for their political feasibility, efficiency, equity, and robustness. Ultimately, the researchers propose the implementation of EIFDs to improve infrastructure in unincorporated communities and the formation of town councils as an avenue to voice political needs and relay county initiatives and policies. Practitioners should look to the methods utilized to understand policy interventions that can increase equitable outcomes.

Increasingly hostile public space design has created parks that ostracize people experiencing homelessness. Hostile design not only excludes unhoused people from public space, but makes public environments less accessible for all. Inclusive design can be used to combat defensive architecture and build parks that are more valuable and accessible public assets. In order to combat hostile design, exclusionary park planning, and discrimination in public spaces, urban planners and designers must design parks to evoke a sense of ownership and belonging for all. I argue that planners and designers can restore unhoused individuals’ spatial rights to public parks by including them in the planning and engagement process, by programming parks with their needs in mind, and by designing park facilities to support this population. I began with a review of relevant planning literature to document the existing research on unhoused people’s use of public space. My research methodology includes three case studies of parks designed with and for unhoused park users: Folkets Park in Copenhagen, Woodruff Park in Atlanta, and Lafayette Square Park in Oakland. I validated my research findings through interviews with urban designers and an advocate for the rights of unhoused people. My research findings demonstrate that urban designers, planners, policymakers, and advocates can create parks that are inclusive of unhoused people by engaging them in the participatory planning process, offering place-based outreach, programming for community cohesion, and designing parks with flexible, inviting spaces and well maintained facilities. By including people experiencing homelessness in the planning and design process, planners can make park spaces equitable for all users.

The research explores the technology workforce environment in Long Beach by examining disparities in employee representation and wages across demographic variables, namely race, ethnicity, and gender. Qualitative interviews conducted with stakeholders informed perceived challenges to nurturing equity in the Long Beach technology workforce, such as a lack of diversity in candidate pools, inadequate internal corporate education, and demographic disparities by position and salary.A quantitative analysis of racial, gender, and ethnic disparities in the representation and earnings of Long Beach’s resident technology workforce also revealed persistent trends. Representation, rather than wages, is the biggest contributor to gaps in gross earnings, women are the most underrepresented in the Long Beach resident technology workforce, and aerospace and healthcare are uniquely represented industries in the City. The combined research ultimately informed recommendations for different types of stakeholders. Corporate stakeholders can develop their own frameworks for equity, thoroughly train staff members and hiring managers on how to reach defined goals, conduct and publish metrics for public viewing to increase accountability, and focus on the hiring and retention of underrepresented groups especially in high-ranking, high-salaried roles. City and public sector agencies can use the traction gained by aerospace publicity to broaden the focus of their programs to additional technology industries and apply representation and wage data to steer funding. Ecosystem partners can focus on foundational youth education and partner early in a student’s academic career to successfully support the transition from the classroom to the workforce. Most importantly, all stakeholders can develop meaningful connections and relationships with community members to drive equity efforts.

Los Angeles has been rated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as the city facing the highest risk of natural hazards in the near future. In particular, Los Angeles is vulnerable to the adverse health impacts of climate change-induced extreme heat. Communities of color and low-income households face the greatest risk from extreme heat due to unjust policies like redlining, which have today led to the inequitable distribution of the resources necessary for communities to protect themselves against extreme heat.This report uses existing research and municipal climate plans, a geospatial analysis, interviews with subject matter experts, community focus groups, and an online community survey to assess how the City of Los Angeles can better build equitable heat policy and long-term resilience among the most impacted and vulnerable communities.In this report, we assess nine policy options based on their alignment with community preferences, their effectiveness at improving the health outcomes of frontline communities, whether they target an equitable redistribution of heat adaptation resources distribution and their financial and administrative feasibility for implementation by the City of Los Angeles.Based on this analysis, we recommend that the City of Los Angeles immediately expand access to green space in frontline neighborhoods, increase available at-home heat adaptation resources for frontline communities, equitably distribute pedestrian shade structures and water access in frontline communities, and improve the accessibility of communications about available heat adaptation resources. We also recommend the implementation of community ambassador programs, more accessible heat workplace trainings, and the expansion of the resilience center network after measures are put in place to improve their desirability to frontline community members.
