Poles of white spruce, Sitka spruce, mountain hemlock, and balsam poplar were subjected to several variations on a standard preservative process: Allowing the material to partially season before treatment; incising the material when green or partially seasoned; and elevating the temperature of first solution of copper sulfate and letting the wood cool before transfer to second solution of sodium arsenate. Ultrasonic absorption measurements have been made in solutions of copper sulfate, magnesium sulfate, and cobalt sulfate over the frequency range 45 to 550 MHz using pulse modulated waves and a send-receive technique. The excess relaxational absorption data were computer processed and the relaxation times calculated. These results indicate that the high frequency relaxation for di-divalent electrolytes occurs at substantially higher frequencies than reported by earlier workers and is concentration dependent. On the basis of the values for partial molal volume changes, energies of activation, concentration dependence, deuteration effects, and foreign electrolyte effects, the high frequency absorption peak has been attributed to the diffusion controlled second order process leading to the formation of an encounter complex. The report also discusses possible difficulties arising from the lack of data for the non-relaxing portion of the absorption with the ionic constituents present. (Author)

Binary solid solutions of K2SO4-CuSO4-6H2O, (NH4)2SO4-CuSO4-6H2O salts at 25C were investigated. The chemical potentials and activity coefficients of the components were calculated with the aid of the so-called third component method based on Gibbs - Duhem relations. Investigation of the composition diagram of the binary system Cr--NiAl showed the possibility of singular triangulation of the general ternary system Ni--Cr--Al and separation of a secondary system, Ni--Cr--NiAl, as the object of independent investigation. During the study of the ternary system Ni--Cr--NiAl, the following served as the basic binary systems: the Ni--Cr system, the Ni-NiAl system, and the Cr-NiAl system.
