Biogeosciences, 17(20), (2020): 5043-5055, doi:10.5194/bg-17-5043-2020., We introduced a sediment-induced light attenuation algorithm into a biogeochemical model of the Coupled Ocean–Atmosphere–Wave–Sediment Transport (COAWST) modeling system. A fully coupled ocean–atmospheric–sediment–biogeochemical simulation was carried out to assess the impact of sediment-induced light attenuation on primary production in the northern Gulf of Mexico during the passage of Hurricane Gustav in 2008. When compared with model results without sediment-induced light attenuation, our new model showed a better agreement with satellite data on both the magnitude of nearshore chlorophyll concentration and the spatial distribution of offshore bloom. When Hurricane Gustav approached, resuspended sediment shifted the inner shelf ecosystem from a nutrient-limited one to a light-limited one. Only 1 week after Hurricane Gustav's landfall, accumulated nutrients and a favorable optical environment induced a posthurricane algal bloom in the top 20 m of the water column, while the productivity in the lower water column was still light-limited due to slow-settling sediment. Corresponding with the elevated offshore NO3 flux (38.71 mmol N m−1 s−1) and decreased chlorophyll flux (43.10 mg m−1 s−1), the outer shelf posthurricane bloom should have resulted from the cross-shelf nutrient supply instead of the lateral dispersed chlorophyll. Sensitivity tests indicated that sediment light attenuation efficiency affected primary production when sediment concentration was moderately high. In situ CDOM absorption and salinity obtained from multiple field campaigns were inversely correlated seasonally (winter spring and summer) and latitudinally (inner- and outer-shelf zones), suggesting conservative behavior of CDOM distribution. A weaker correlation, during summer in the outer-shelf zone, however, indicated stronger effects of photooxidation and lower masking effects from riverine CDOM. Further, matchup comparisons between model-derived and in situ CDOM absorption were statistically sound for the summer (bias 0.016, root mean square error 0.059, r2 0.51 SI 0.28) and the winter spring periods (bias 0.033, root mean square error 0.099, r2 0.52, SI 0.21). Overlaying the model-derived CDOM maps on the simulated currents revealed the strong influence of currents on CDOM advection. Downcoast currents during the nonsummer months led to persistent advection of CDOM westward interrupted by frequent cold front events that flush CDOM-laden waters out of the coastal bays onto the inner and outer continental shelves. In contrast, the upcoast current regime, though less well organized, produces a more significant seaward advection of CDOM, likely due to the Ekman transport and subsequent entrainment by mesoscale eddies over the continental slope., Published in Coastal Research, v30 n4 p800-814, Jul 2014. The river-influenced Mississippi-Louisiana -Texas (MsLaTex) coast in the northern Gulf of Mexico was in 2008 impacted by Hurricane Ike that made landfall along the Texas coast on 13 September 2008, causing widespread damage due to storm surge and coastal inundation. We examine the effects of the hurricane on the MsLaTex coast using remote sensing, model simulation and field observations. Moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer sea surface temperature imagery indicated an approximately 2-4 deg C decrease in temperature to the right of the hurricane track. The high-resolution (~2 km) three-dimensional Navy Coastal Ocean Model simulation and tide data suggested the generation of a coastally trapped 'barotropic Kelvin' wave during the passage of Ike, which may have contributed to an earlier than expected surge in sea level. A distinct elevated band of suspended paniculate matter (SPM) concentration extending from Louisiana to Texas (~90.5 94.5 deg W) coast was observed offshore in sea-viewing wide field-of-view sensor-derived imagery of 17 and 25 September that appeared to be associated with the coastally trapped Kelvin wave that was enhanced west of the Mississippi Canyon. Two intermittent wind events on 15 and 21 September likely kept the SPM in suspension for an extended period. Subsequently, on 27 and 30 September, SPM decreased along the elevated band and near the landfall site but increased near the bays and passes due to receding flood waters. Off the Atchafalava and Mississippi deltas a large pulse of river discharge containing elevated SPM levels caused a plume around the two river deltas and its offshore dispersion into the open Gulf of Mexico., Published in Remote Sensing Letters, v2 n1 p11-19, March 2011.

Energetic meteorological events such as frontal passages and hurricanes often impact coastal regions in the northern Gulf of Mexico that influence geochemical processes in the region. Satellite remote sensing data such as winds from QuikSCAT, suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentrations derived from SeaWiFS and the outputs (sea level and surface ocean currents) of a nested navy coastal ocean model (NCOM) were combined to assess the effects of frontal passages between 23-28 March 2005 on the physical properties and the SPM characteristics in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Typical changes in wind speed and direction associated with frontal passages were observed in the latest 12.5 km wind product from QuikSCAT with easterly winds before the frontal passage undergoing systematic shifts in direction and speed and turning northerly, northwesterly during a weak and a strong front on 23 and 27 March, respectively. A quantitative comparison of model sea level results with tide gauge observations suggest better correlations near the delta than in the western part of the Gulf with elevated sea levels along the coast before the frontal passage and a large drop in sea level following the frontal passage on 27 March. Model results of surface currents suggested strong response to wind forcing with westward and onshore currents before the frontal passage reversing into eastward, southeastward direction over a six day period from 23 to 28 March 2005., The original document contains color images. We present a new approach that incorporates two models to estimate the underwater light field from remote sensing of ocean color. The first employs a sense of analytical. semi-analytical, and empirical algorithms to retrieve the spectrum of inherent optical properties (IOPs), including the absorption and backscatter coefficients, from the spectrum of remote sensing reflectance. The second model computes the profile of photosynthetically available radiation EO, PAR(z) for a vertically homogeneous water column using the information of the retrieved IOPs and the ambient optical environment. This computation is based on an improved look-up table technology that possesses high accuracy, comparable with the full solution of the radiative transfer equations, and meets the computational requirement of remote sensing application. This new approach was validated by in situ measurements and an extensive model-to-model comparison with a wide range of IOPs. We successfully mapped the compensation depth by applying this new approach to process the SeaWiFS imagery. This research suggests that E0, PAR(z) can be obtained routinely from ocean-color data and may have significant implications for the estimation of global heat and carbon budget., The original document contains color images.
