Abstract

Der früheisenzeitliche Fundplatz am Mont Lassois bei Vix (Dép. Côte d’Or, Frankreich) ist insbesondere durch das ausserordentlich reich ausgestattete Frauengrab bekannt sowie durch die komplex befestigte Plateausiedlung mit Monumentalbauten und Importen aus dem Mittelmeerraum. Die Entdeckungen am Champ Fossé bereichern die bisherigen Kenntnisse zum späthallstattlichen «Fürstensitz» am Mont Lassois insofern, als dass sie den Blick für das Alltägliche im Kontext des Extravaganten öffnen: Bauarbeiten, Handwerk, Wohnen – dies zur kurzen Blütezeit der «Protourbs» um 500 v. Chr. Die Ausgrabungen haben zudem gezeigt, dass das Champ Fossé in der Mittellatènezeit platzartig umgestaltet und den deformierten Waffenteilen nach zu urteilen kurzfristig für Kulthandlungen genutzt wurde. Damit ist die am Mont Lassois bisher einzige archäologische Kulturschicht aus der Latènezeit belegt. In dieser Monografie werden die Befunde und Kleinfunde aus den Zürcher Ausgrabungen am Champ Fossé vorgelegt und in ihrem Zusammenhang besprochen.

Abstract

Seit Jahrzehnten als prähistorisches Bergbaugebiet bekannt, war das Oberhalbstein in den vergangenen Jahren erstmals Gegenstand systematischer montanarchäologischer Forschungen. Dabei wurden nicht nur Dutzende neue Fundstellen entdeckt, sondern erstmals auch zentrale Verhüttungsbefunde wie Öfen und Röstbette ausgegraben. Zudem konnten gleich mehrere Kupferbergwerke aus der Bronze- und Eisenzeit untersucht werden – eine schweizweite Premiere! Dank ausführlicher Geländearbeiten, Materialauswertungen und Laboranalysen kann nun der gesamte «Oberhalbstein-Prozess» vom Erz bis zum Metall rekonstruiert werden.

Abstract

Rock crystal is among the most fascinating materials in the archaeological record. It is formed in alpine-type fissures by hydrothermal processes. Due to its physical properties, rock crystal has been a valuable resource throughout human history. In alpine regions, it was frequently used for the production of stone tools between the Mesolithic and the Bronze Age. However, there are only a handful of known prehistoric crystal quartz quarries in Europe. The following article presents evidence for rock crystal mining during the Early Mesolithic and the final stage of the Neolithic at a high-altitude site in the Canton of Valais, Switzerland. In combination with radiocarbon dates from previous studies, the results of our fieldwork indicate that in the Swiss Alps rock crystal was mined almost 10,000 years ago. Furthermore, typo-technological analyses provide new insights into the way in which the raw material was processed during the represented time periods.

Abstract

The rich Mediterranean imports found in Early Celtic princely sites (7th-5th cent. BC) in Southwestern Germany, Switzerland and Eastern France have long been the focus of archaeological and public interest. Consumption practices, particularly in the context of feasting, played a major role in Early Celtic life and imported ceramic vessels have consequently been interpreted as an attempt by the elite to imitate Mediterranean wine feasting. Here we present the first scientific study carried out to elucidate the use of Mediterranean imports in Early Celtic Central Europe and their local ceramic counterparts through organic residue analyses of 99 vessels from Vix-Mont Lassois, a key Early Celtic site. In the Mediterranean imports we identified imported plant oils and grape wine, and evidence points towards appropriation of these foreign vessels. Both Greek and local wares served for drinking grape wine and other plant-based fermented beverage(s). A wide variety of animal and plant by-products (e.g. fats, oils, waxes, resin) were also identified. Using an integrative approach, we show the importance of beehive products, millet and bacteriohopanoid beverage(s) in Early Celtic drinking practices. We highlight activities related to biomaterial transformation and show intra-site and status-related differences in consumption practices and/or beverage processing.

22. TERRA 2017 – Terraced Landscapes of the Lower Engadine

Abstract

Archaeological and environmental investigations in the terraced landscapes of the Lower Engadine started already late in the 20th century with the pioneering works of Heinrich Zoller and Angelika Raba. More recently, an interdisciplinary network supported by the Archaeological Heritage Service of Grisons (ADG) and consisting of archaeological computing scientists (Karsten Lambers, University of Leiden), geomorphologists (Bertil Mächtle, University of Heidelberg), survey and soil specialists (Katja Kothieringer, Till Sonnemann, University of Bamberg), environmentalists (Angelika Abderhalden Raba, ARINAS, Sasha Kosanic, University of Konstanz) and archaeologists from UZH has relaunched fieldwork in this thrilling landscape.

The focus of the manifold surveys, analyses and modelings is on settlement structures, environmental contexts, and ecodynamic processes, from the younger Prehistoric periods to Roman times. The texts are gathered in over a dozen contributions, teaming 25 authors from various disciplines and countries of Alpine Europe.

L’area lepontica, che coincide in Svizzera sostanzialmente con il Canton Ticino, e i territori immediatamente confinanti che appartengono ai Grigioni e al Vallese ( fig. 1), sono da più generazioni al centro di ricerche archeologiche condotte dall’Università di Zurigo. Basti qui ricordare i lavori di riferimento svolti da Emil Vogt (1944), da Margarita Primas (1970) e da Werner Stöckli (1975) che hanno portato, a partire dalla metà del XX secolo, a un inquadramento cronologico e culturale del materiale proveniente da numerosi siti – in primo luogo dalle ‘necropoli ticinesi’ 1. Negli ultimi anni, in seguito a un rinnovato interesse per l’archeologia della Svizzera sud-alpina 2 e a una serie di elaborazioni di complessi già noti, le problematiche d’analisi si sono moltiplicate e precisate così che si può parlare di un vero e proprio aggiornamento dello stato della ricerca.

Abstract

The Bronze Age of Eurasia (around 3000-1000 BC) was a period of major cultural changes. However, there is debate about whether these changes resulted from the circulation of ideas or from human migrations, potentially also facilitating the spread of languages and certain phenotypic traits. We investigated this by using new, improved methods to sequence low-coverage genomes from 101 ancient humans from across Eurasia. We show that the Bronze Age was a highly dynamic period involving large-scale population migrations and replacements, responsible for shaping major parts of present-day demographic structure in both Europe and Asia. Our findings are consistent with the hypothesized spread of Indo-European languages during the Early Bronze Age. We also demonstrate that light skin pigmentation in Europeans was already present at high frequency in the Bronze Age, but not lactose tolerance, indicating a more recent onset of positive selection on lactose tolerance than previously thought.

Abstract

In der Bronzezeit (2200-800 v. Chr.) ist der zentraleuropäische Alpen- raum ein wichtiger Lieferant für den Rohstoff Kupfer. Neben den gro- ssen Bergbaugebieten im Ostalpenraum spielen ab der Spätbronzezeit auch kleinere Reviere wie das Bündner Oberhalbstein eine Rolle. Rund 60 Schlackenfundstellen zeugen im Gebiet zwischen Tiefen- castel und dem Julierpass heute noch von dieser urgeschichtlichen Metallproduktion. Seit 2013 werden durch den Fachbereich Prähistorische Archäologie der Universität Zürich im Oberhalbstein montanarchäologische Feldfor- schungen durchgeführt. Ziel ist es, die vollständige Produktionskette vom Erzabbau über die Aufbereitung und Verhüttung bis hin zum metallischen Kupfer am archäologischen (Be)Fund nachzuweisen und naturwissenschaftlich zu analysieren. Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden laufenden Arbeiten und erste Er- gebnisse im Bereich Erzbergbau vorgestellt.

Abstract

Ruminant milk and dairy products are important food resources in many European, African, and Middle Eastern societies. These regions are also associated with derived genetic variants for lactase persistence. In mammals, lactase, the enzyme that hydrolyzes the milk sugar lactose, is normally down-regulated after weaning, but at least five human populations around the world have independently evolved mutations regulating the expression of the lactase-phlorizin-hydrolase gene. These mutations result in a dominant lactase persistence phenotype and continued lactase tolerance in adulthood. A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) at C/T-13910 is responsible for most lactase persistence in European populations, but when and where the T-13910 polymorphism originated and the evolutionary processes by which it rose to high frequency in Europe have been the subject of strong debate. A history of dairying is presumed to be a prerequisite, but archaeological evidence is lacking. In this study, DNA was extracted from the dentine of 36 individuals excavated at a medieval cemetery in Dalheim, Germany. Eighteen individuals were successfully genotyped for the C/T-13910 SNP by molecular cloning and sequencing, of which 13 (72%) exhibited a European lactase persistence genotype: 44% CT, 28% TT. Previous ancient DNA-based studies found that lactase persistence genotypes fall below detection levels in most regions of Neolithic Europe. Our research shows that by AD 1200, lactase persistence frequency had risen to over 70% in this community in western Central Europe. Given that lactase persistence genotype frequency in present-day Germany and Austria is estimated at 71-80%, our results suggest that genetic lactase persistence likely reached modern levels before the historic population declines associated with the Black Death, thus excluding plague-associated evolutionary forces in the rise of lactase persistence in this region. Abstract

We report about the method of neutron imaging which can be considered as complement and alternative to the more common X-ray techniques. While the image quality obtained (resolution, dynamic, contrast) is comparable, the particular sensitivity for the investigated materials can differ much. With respect to bronze objects containing Cu, Sn, Zn or Pb in large amounts, the transmission of neutrons is considerably higher than is possible with common X-ray devices. Furthermore, traces of organic materials (corrosion products, resin, wax, oil, lacquer) can be detected accurately. The report describes by means of selected examples how to apply the neutron techniques most efficiently and what infor- mation can be derived from these studies. In addition we describe in brief some alternative analytical tools based on X-ray fluorescence and diffraction that are applicable for material characterization on the surface. The beam lines at PSI’s large-scale facilities can be used on demand if the scientific justification for a dedicated study is submitted in a proposal. Abstract

The Bhutan-Swiss Archaeology Project’s first phase (2008–10) was focused on the excavation of the Drapham Dzong ruins in the Bumthang valley (see corresponding SLSA annual reports). The second phase (2011–13) aims to achieve the implementation of the country’s first Archaeology Office under the Department for Conservation of Cultural Heritage Sites (Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs) as well as to complete the modular teaching program in practical archaeology, which was set up by the Department of Prehistoric Archaeology of the University of Zurich. Semiannually, archaeological surveys, practical field schools and small excavations as well as theoretical class room teaching modules have been conducted by Swiss experts (see corresponding SLSA annual reports). In the context of the project’s second phase, activities of many kinds took place in 2013.

Abstract

Since 2006, the interdisciplinary project “Leventina – Prehistoric Settlement Landscape”, funded by the Swiss National Foundation, is being conducted under the coordination of the Department of Pre- and Protohistory of the University of Zurich with researchers from further disciplines. The project investigates prehistoric settlement and economy in various altitudinal zones of the Alpine Ticino valley. One of the aims is to reconstruct the agricultural, pastoral and forestal land use in the Bronze and Iron Ages, and to evaluate the influencing factors on the spatial distribution of subsistence economy areas. A wide range of spatial and archaeological data as well as literature and field data describing properties in particular of the ancient economic plants was available for the purpose. Based on these data, a factor analysis and a subsequent prediction were conducted in order to evaluate the variables with a likely impact on agricultural land use at prehistoric times, and to detect potential agricultural land. Additionally, using predictive modeling, we aimed at extracting factors with impact on the spatial distribution of Bronze age settlement sites and generating a potential map of areas used for settlement. Furthermore, a cost path analysis was conducted to investigate different traffic routes across the main ridge of the Alps in terms of travel time.
