In vitro studija na 144 izvađena zuba. Zubi su po ISO standardu ISO/TR 11405 prikupljeni, čuvani, ukalupljeni, podeljeni na 12 grupa po 12 zuba. Tretirani su sa 3 vrste adhezivnih sistema u 4 različita uslova rada. Postavljeni su kompozitni valjci koji simuliraju ortodontske. Na kidalici je urađeno 144 smicanja kompozitnih valjaka. Sila smicanja je označena u kg sa preciznošću od 100g (grama). Najveće i najmanje vrednosti merenja u svakoj grupi su odbačene. 120 napona smo podelili u 12 grupa. Koristili smo Opti Bond Solo Plus (dvokomponentni adheziv), Opti Bond Universal i Zip Bond Universal. Kontrolne grupe i priprema kalupa su rađeni po ISO standardu (kontrolna grupa – mašinski zaravnjena gleđ). U uslovima prirodno zakrivljene, mašinski neobrađene gleđi, vršili smo postavljanje u suvim i kontaminiranim uslovima (vlaga, krv). Naponi kidanja su iskazani u kg (kilogramima), a preračunati u N(NJutne) i MPa (mega Paskale). Srednje vrednosti su statistički obrađene, tabelarno i grafički prikazane. Takođe je prikazan i ARI indeks. Dobijeni podaci su upoređeni sa literarnim podacima. Iskazane su i značajne razlike između uzoraka. U uslovima kontaminacije predlže se rad sa Opti Bond Solo Plus i Zip Bond Universal. Takođe se predlože i protokol intraoperativnog postavljanja ortodontskih bravica na gleđ neizniklih zuba., In vitro study on 144 extracted teeth. According to the ISO standard ISO / TR 11405, teeth were collected, stored, molded, divided into 12 groups, 12 teeth each. They were treated with 3 types of adhesive systems in 4 different operating conditions. Composite rollers simulating orthodontic brackets have been installed. 144 shear of composite rollers was done on the ripper. Shear force is marked in kg (kilograms) with an accuracy of 100g ( grams). The largest and smallest sample results in each group were discarded. We divided 120 voltages into 12 groups. We used Opti Bond Solo Plus (two-component adhesive), Opti Bon Universal and Zip Bond Universal. Control bonding and mold preparation were done according to ISO standard (control group). In the conditions of naturally curved machine-treated enamel, we performed bonding in dry and contaminated conditions (moisture, blood). Breaking stresses are expressed in kg (kilograms), and converted into N (Newtons) and MPa (mega Pascals). Mean values are statistically processed, tabulated and graphically presented. The ARI index is also shown. The obtained data were compared with literal data. Significant differences between the samples were also shown. In case of contamination, we suggest working with Opti Bond Solo Plus and ZIP Bond Universal. We also proposed a protocol for intraoperative bonding of orthodontic brackts on the enamel of non-erupted teeth.

Dental fluorosis can cause changes in the enamel surface, conditioning its functionality and esthetics. The application of dental adhesives is a treatment option; however, their use on fluorotic teeth can result in limitations. The aim of this study was to compare the shear bond strength of two different adhesives, one with 10-MDP and one without 10-MDP, in different degrees of dental fluorosis.This is an in vitro study on dental enamel samples, a total of 180 samples with the inclusion criteria were treated, randomly divided into two groups of 90, according to the type of dental adhesive, where each group was again divided into three groups of 30 samples, representing different degrees of dental fluorosis according to the Thylstrup-Fejerskov index (Group I: TF1 and TF2; Group II: TF3; Group III: TF4). Normality tests, two-factor ANOVA, and post-hoc tests were used to determine differences between the groups, with a significance level of 95%. As results, a statistically significant difference was shown between the use of dental adhesive with 10-MDP and the three groups of dental fluorosis (p=0.011), in addition, a Tukey post-hoc test on the groups treated with 10-MDP adhesive revealed a statistically significant difference between group I versus group II, and group I versus group III, (p=<0.05). It is concluded that the use of adhesive systems with 10-MDP presents a better shear bond strength on enamel with dental fluorosis grades I and II in the Thylstrup-Fejerskov index., La fluorosis dental puede ocasionar cambios en la superficie del esmalte, condicionando su funcionalidad y estética, la aplicación de adhesivos dentales es una opción de tratamiento, sin embargo, su uso en dientes fluoroticos puede resultar en limitaciones. El objetivo de este estudio consistió en comparar la fuerza de adhesión a la cizalladura de dos diferentes adhesivos, uno con 10-MDP y otro sin 10-MDP, en diferentes grados de fluorosis dental. Se trata de un estudio in vitro en muestras de esmalte dental, un total de 180 muestras con los criterios de inclusión fueron tratadas, aleatoriamente divididas en dos grupos de 90, de acuerdo al tipo de adhesivo dental, donde cada grupo fue dividido nuevamente en tres grupos de 30 muestras, representando diferentes grados de fluorosis dental según el índice de Thylstrup-Fejerskov (Grupo I: TF1 y TF2; Grupo II: TF3; Grupo III: TF4). Para determinar diferencias entre los grupos se utilizaron pruebas de normalidad, ANOVA de dos factores, y pruebas post-hoc, con un nivel de significancia de 95%. Como resultados, se mostró una diferencia estadísticamente significativa entre el uso de adhesivo dental con 10-MDP y los tres grupos de fluorosis dental (p=0.011), además, una prueba post hoc de Tukey sobre los grupos tratados con adhesivo 10-MDP revelaron una diferencia estadísticamente significativa entre el grupo I frente al grupo II, y el grupo I frente al grupo III, (p=<0.05) Se concluye que el uso de sistemas adhesivos con 10-MDP presentan una mejor resistencia de adhesión al cizallamiento en esmalte con grados de fluorosis dental I y II en el índice de Thylstrup-Fejerskov.

Evaluate the effect on the shear bond strength (SBS) of 5% NaOCl applied after acid etching on ground anterior teeth with fluorosis and analyze the surface with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), also compare fluorotic and healthy ground enamel by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Vickers microhardness (VM). For the SBS test 30 anterior teeth with moderate and severe fluorosis according Dean index were selected by an examiner previously calibrated with an expert in fluorosis by using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). With the help of a calibrated high speed diamond bur for veneer preparation and a parallel chamfer high speed diamond bur the vestibular face was prepared with a uniform reduction of .3 mm under water cooling. In one half of the vestibular face of the teeth the conventional adhesive procedure was carried out while in the other half was added an additional step with 5% NaOCl applied for 1 minute and washing after acid etchant. A resin post was adhered in each half and load was applied until fracture. The failure mode was evaluated and a SEM analysis was made. Posteriorly 10 samples of fluorotic and healthy ground enamel were used to measure the nanostructural characteristics by AFM (roughness average and absolute depth profile) and the VM in three operative steps (after ground, after etchant and after deproteinization). The Shapiro-Wilks and Brown-Forsythe methods were used to test the distribution of variables. The Paired Student's t-test was used to compare the differences between mean bond strength (MPa) in the two groups for SBS test. Chi-square analyzes were performed to compare the failure modes between groups. One-way ANOVA analysis and Tukey-Kramer post hoc test were used to compare groups for roughness average, absolute depth profile and Vickers microhardness. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to measure the shear bond strength (SBS) of glass ionomer cement (GIC) to artificial carious dentin with and without silver diamine fluoride (SDF) treatment. Methods: Permanent molars were sectioned and demineralized to create artificial carious lesions. In five groups, the demineralization of dentin, application of SDF, use of conditioner, and elapsed time between the placement of SDF and restoration were tested for differences in SBS using an UltraTester machine. Statistical analysis was done using the Kruskal-Wallis test and Tukey-Kramer multiple comparison tests. Results: The highest bond strength was found when GIC was placed on conditioned and demineralized dentin treated with SDF one week earlier. Treatment with SDF and use of conditioner did not statistically affect the SBS of GIC to demineralized dentin. Statistically significant increases in bond strength were found when one week elapsed between SDF application and GIC placement. The lowest bond strength was found with immediate GIC application onto SDF-treated demineralized dentin. Conclusions: These in vitro findings suggest that silver diamine fluoride treatment does not significantly affect the bond strength of glass ionomer cement to dentin lesions, and improved retention is obtained by allowing SDF solution to set for one week prior to GIC placement.

Objectives: Adhesion and marginal adaptation of a claimed bioactive restorative material (ACTIVA BioACTIVE Restorative) to human teeth were compared with those of a resin-modified glass ionomer cement (Fuji II LC) and a control resin composite (Ceram X Mono). Material and Methods: Shear bond strength and marginal adaptation to enamel and dentine were assessed after no pretreatment of the hard tissues or after etching with phosphoric acid (ACTIVA BioACTIVE Restorative and Ceram X Mono) or polyacrylic acid (Fuji II LC). For ACTIVA BioACTIVE Restorative, the effect of applying a self-etch adhesive (Xeno Select, Dentsply Sirona) was also investigated. Data were analyzed using non-parametric tests (α = 0.05). Results: Bond strength and marginal adaptation in enamel and dentine were significantly different among the investigated materials (p<.05). Due to loss of restorations, it was not possible to measure bond strength of ACTIVA BioACTIVE Restorative if no pretreatment was performed or if dentine was etched; however, use of the self-etch adhesive resulted in similar bond strength as Ceram X Mono. Etching improved adhesion of Fuji II LC to enamel and dentine. Regarding marginal adaptation, ACTIVA BioACTIVE Restorative showed the highest wall-to-wall contraction to enamel in all pretreatment groups and the overall highest wall-to-wall contraction to dentine after etching. Due to loss of restorations, no marginal assessment was possible on cavities with margins in dentine when no pretreatment was used. The use of a self-etch adhesive with ACTIVA BioACTIVE Restorative resulted in similar adaptation to dentine compared to the other materials. Conclusion: The self-adhesive property of ACTIVA BioACTIVE Restorative is nonexistent.

Methods: A total of 53 test specimen were manufactured from two partially stabilised zirconia materials, Zirkonzahn Prettau Anterior (ZPA) (n = 16) and Whitepeaks CopraSmile Symphony 5 layer (WCS) (n = 18), and a lithium disilicate (Ivoclar e.Max Press) (n = 19) acting as control. All test specimens were cemented to human enamel with Variolink Esthetic DC and then subjected to a shear bond strength test. Fracture and surface analysis were performed using light and scanning electron microscope. Results: No significant differences in shear bond strength were detected when analysing the three groups. Dividing them according to the fracture pattern significant difference in shear bond strength between the two zirconia groups could be seen analysing test bodies with failure of adhesion to the test body, but not to enamel. The ZPA had higher shear bond strength (23.68 MPa) than WCS (13.00 MPa). No significant differences were seen compared to the control group (19.02 MPa). Conclusion: Partially stabilised zirconia shows potential as a material to be used where macro mechanical bonding is not possible, although this study does not reveal how or if the bonding deteriorates over time.

The field of dental materials has undergone more of a revolution than an evolution over the past 100 y. The development of new products, especially in the past half century, has occurred at a staggering pace, and their introduction to the market has been equally impressive. The movement has mostly come in the area of improved esthetics, marked by the gradual replacement of dental amalgam with dental composite and all-metal and porcelain-fused-to-metal indirect restorations with reinforced dental ceramics, all made possible by the rapid improvements in dental adhesive materials. This article covers the time course of dental materials development over the past century in which the Journal of Dental Research has been published. While there have been advances in nearly all materials used in the field, this article focuses on several areas, including dental amalgam, dental composites and light curing, dental adhesives and dental cements, ceramics, and new functional repair materials. A few short statements on future advances will be included at the end.

Interfacial bonding between fibre and matrix is most critical to obtain enhanced mechanical properties of the resulting composites. Here we present a new surface tailoring method of selective wet etching and organosilicon monomers (3-(Trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate, TMSPMA) deposition process on the short S-Glass fibre as a reinforcing material, resulting in increased mechanical retention and strong chemical bonding between glass fibres and polymer resin (a mixture of triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) and urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA) monomers). The effect of surface modification on fibre matrix interfacial strength was investigated through microdroplet tests. An S-Glass fibre treated with piranha solution (a mixture of H 2 O 2 and H 2 SO 4 ) for 24 hours followed by TMSPMA surface silanization shows highest increase up to 39.6% in interfacial shear strength (IFSS), and critical fibre length could be reduced from 916.0 µm to 432.5 µm. We find the optimal surface treatment condition in that the flexural strength of dental composites reinforced by the S-Glass fibres enhanced up to 22.3% compared to the composites without fibre surface treatments. The significant elevation in strength is attributed to changes in the surface roughness of glass fibres at atomic scale, specifically by providing the multiplied spots of the chemical bridge and nano-mechanical interlocking. The findings offer a new strategy for advanced tailoring of short S-Glass fibres to maximise the mechanical properties of biomedical and dental composites.

Aiming to establish a model for clinically-relevant dentin-bond testing, we evaluated the effects of smear layers created by abrasives having similar coarseness (180-grit SiC paper; fine-grit diamond bur) and application modes (single application; double application) on the microtensile bond strengths (mu TBS) of two currently available universal adhesives (G-Premio Bond; Scotchbond Universal Adhesive) and a two-step self-etch adhesive (Clearfil Megabond 2). Sixty extracted human third molars were used for the mu TBS test. Data were analyzed by three-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (alpha = 0.05). Fracture modes were determined using stereomicroscopy. An additional 24 third molars were prepared for observation of the resin-dentin interface by TEM and adhesive-smear layer interaction by SEM. mu TBS was significantly affected by the adhesives and their application modes (p < 0.001), implying that the double application of universal adhesives should be recommended to improve their performance. The effect of smear layers was not significant (p > 0.05), indicating that 180-grit SiC papers could be used to prepare dentin as a substitute for fine-grit diamond burs for dentin-bond testing in laboratory settings.

Conclusion: Partially stabilised zirconia shows potential as a material to be used where macro mechanical bonding is not possible, although this study does not reveal how or if the bonding deteriorates over time.

Aim: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of zirconia, stabilised with 5% yttria, luted to enamel and to evaluate the fracture pattern at loss of retention. Methods: A total of 53 test specimen were manufactured from two partially stabilised zirconia materials, Zirkonzahn Prettau Anterior (ZPA) (n = 16) and Whitepeaks CopraSmile Symphony 5 layer (WCS) (n = 18), and a lithium disilicate (Ivoclar e.Max Press) (n = 19) acting as control. All test specimens were cemented to human enamel with Variolink Esthetic DC and then subjected to a shear bond strength test. Fracture and surface analysis were performed using light and scanning electron microscope. Results: No significant differences in shear bond strength were detected when analysing the three groups. Dividing them according to the fracture pattern significant difference in shear bond strength between the two zirconia groups could be seen analysing test bodies with failure of adhesion to the test body, but not to enamel. The ZPA had higher shear bond strength (23.68 MPa) than WCS (13.00 MPa). No significant differences were seen compared to the control group (19.02 MPa). Degree of hard tissue loss and type of final prosthetic restoration should be carefully considered when making a treatment plan. The objective of this prospective clinical trial was to assess the influence of the type of prosthetic restoration as well as the degree of hard tissue loss on 7-y clinical performance of ETT restored with fiber posts. Two groups (n = 60) were defined depending on the type of prosthetic restoration needed: 1) single unit porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns (SCs) and 2) 3- to 4-unit PFM fixed dental prostheses (FDPs), with 1 healthy and 1 endodontically treated and fiber post-restored abutment. Within each group, samples were divided into 2 subgroups (n = 30) according to the amount of residual coronal tissues after abutment buildup and final preparation: A) >50% of coronal residual structure or B) equal to or lt 50% of coronal residual structure. The clinical outcome was assessed based on clinical and intraoral radiographic examinations at the recalls after 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, and 84 mo. Data were analyzed by Kaplan-Meier log-rank test and Cox regression analysis (P lt 0.05). The overall 7-y survival rate of ETT restored with fiber post and either SCs or FDPs was 69.2%. The highest 84-mo survival rate was recorded in group 1A (90%), whereas teeth in group 2B exhibited the lowest performance (56.7% survival rate). The log-rank test detected statistically significant differences in survival rates among the groups (P = 0.048). Cox regression analysis revealed that the amount of residual coronal structure (P = 0.041; hazard ratio [HR], 2.026; 95% confidence interval [CI] for HR, 1.031-3.982) and the interaction between the type of prosthetic restoration and the amount of residual coronal structure (P = 0.024; HR, 1.372; 95% CI for HR, 1.042-1.806) were statistically significant factors for survival.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the push-out bond strengths of four commercially available adhesive luting systems (two self-adhesive and two etch-and-rinse systems) after mechanical aging. METHODS: Forty single-rooted anterior teeth were divided into four groups according to the luting cement system used: Cement-One (Group 1); One-Q-adhesive Bond + Axia Core Dual (Group 2); SmartCem® 2 (Group 3); and XP Bond® + Core-XTM Flow (Group 4). Anatomical Post was cemented in groups 1 and 2, and D.T. Light-Post Illusion was cemented in groups 3 and 4. All samples were subjected to masticatory stress simulation consisting of 300,000 cycles applied with a computer-controlled chewing simulator. Push-out bond strength values (MPa) were calculated at cervical, middle, and apical each level, and the total bond strengths were calculated as the averages of the three levels. Statistical analysis was performed with data analysis software and significance was set at P<0.05. RESULTS: Statistically significant differences in total bond strength were detected between the cements (Group 4: 3.28 MPa, Group 1: 2.77 MPa, Group 2: 2.36 MPa, Group 3: 1.13 MPa; P<0.05). Specifically, Group 1 exhibited a lower bond strength in the apical zone, Group 3 exhibited a higher strength in this zone, and groups 2 and 4 exhibited more homogeneous bonding strengths across the different anatomical zones. CONCLUSIONS: After artificial aging, etch-and-rinse luting systems exhibited more homogeneous bond strengths; nevertheless, Cement-One exhibited a total bond strength second only to Core-X Flow.

Purpose: The clinical success and longevity of endosseous implants, after their prosthetic finalization, mainly depends on mechanical factors. Excessive mechanical stress has been shown to cause initial bone loss around implants in the presence of a rigid implant-prosthetic connection. The implant abutments are manufactured with high elastic modulus materials such as titanium, steel, precious alloys, or esthetic ceramics. These materials do not absorb any type of shock from the chewing loads or ensure protection of the bone-implant interface, especially when the esthetic restorative material is ceramic rather than composite resin. Materials and Methods: The mechanical resistance to cyclical load was evaluated in a tooth-colored fiber-reinforced abutment prototype (TCFRA) and compared to that of a similarly shaped titanium abutment (TA). Eight TCFRAs and eight TAs were adhesively cemented on as many titanium implants. The swinging the two types of abutments showed during the application of sinusoidal load was also analyzed. Results: In the TA group, fracture and deformation occurred in 12.5% of samples, while debonding occurred in 62.5%. In the TCFRA group, only debonding was present, in 37.5% of samples. In comparison to the TAs, the TCFRAs exhibited greater swinging during the application of sinusoidal load. In the TA group extrusion prevailed, whereas in the TCFRA group intrusion was more frequent. Conclusion: TCFRA demonstrated a greater elasticity than did TAs to the flexural load, absorbing part of the transversal load applied on the fixture during the chewing function and thus reducing the stress on the bone-implant interface.

INTRODUCTION Clean & Boost (Apex Dental) is a new surface treatment solution design to be used in place of phosphoric acid to increase the bond strength of self-etch bonding agent to enamel and more effectively remove contaminants (e.g., handpiece lubricant) from the tooth surface. Simplicity (Apex Dental) is a self-etch bonding agent with acidic monomers that reportedly eliminates concern about bonding to enamel with self-etch bonding agents. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of surface exposure, surface treatment, or bonding agent on the bond strength of composite to enamel. RESULTS Significant differences were found in shear bond strength based on bonding agent (p<0.01) and surface treatment (p=0.023), but not surface exposure (p=0.057) with no significant interaction (p>0.21). CONCLUSIONS • Simplicity had significant lower bond strengths to enamel than Clearfil SE Bond. • Phosphoric-acid etch resulted in greater bond strength than no surface treatment. • The use of Clean & Boost was not significantly different from phosphoric acid or no treatment. • Handpiece-lubricant exposure had no significant effect on bond strength to enamel. • Less adhesive failures were seen with Clearfil SE or phosphoric acid MATERIALS and METHODS The crowns of 120 bovine incisors were mounted in dental stone using PVC pipe. A small flattened area of enamel was created in the mid-facial crown with a disc-shaped diamond bur. Half of the specimens were exposed to the water spray from a high-speed handpiece, Clean&Boost (Apex) is a surface treatment solution designed to be used in place of phosphoric acid to increase the bond strength of self-etch adhesives to enamel and more effectively remove contaminants (e.g., handpiece oil) from the tooth surface. Simplicity (Apex) is a self-etch bonding agent with acidic monomers that reportedly eliminates concerns about bonding to enamel with self-etch adhesives. Objectives: To evaluate the effect of bonding agent, surface treatment, or handpiece spray on the bond strength of composite to enamel. Methods: The crowns of 120 bovine incisors were mounted. Half of the specimens were exposed to the water spray of a high-speed handpiece (Midwest Tradition) after cleaning/lubrication with an automatic handpiece system (Care 3 Plus, NSK) and the other half had only water spray. For surface treatment, one third of the specimens were etched with 35% phosphoric-acid gel (Kerr), one third were treated with Clean&Boost, and one third were untreated. Self-etch bonding agents (Simplicity or Clearfil SE Bond, Kuraray) were applied and light cured. Composite (Filtek Z250, 3M/ESPE) was placed into a mold (Ultradent) and light cured (n=10). The specimens were stored in water for 24 hours at 37°C and tested in shear (Instron). Data were analyzed with a 3-way ANOVA/Tukey’s to evaluate the effects of bonding agent, surface treatment, or handpiece spray on the bond strength of composite to enamel (alpha=0.05). Results: A significant difference was found based on bonding agent (p<0.01), surface treatment (p=0.023), but not on handpiece spray (p=0.057) with no significant interactions (p>0.21). See table. Composite was applied as cylinders with a thickness of 4 mm with a 1 mm diameter and stored in water at 370C for 24 hours. Specimens were debonded with a testing machine at a cross-head speed of 1 mm/minute. Means and standard deviations of bond strength were calculated. Data were analyzed using ANOVA. Fisher's PLSD intervals were calculated at the 0.05 level of significance. Failure modes were determined at x100. The hybrid layer was revealed by treatment with 5N HC1/5% NaOCl or fractured perpendicular to the interface and sputter coated with gold. Specimens were viewed at x1,000, x2,500, and x5,000 in a field emission SEM at 15 kV. Teeth (n=2) sectioned into 0.9 mm-thick slabs were immersed in ammoniacal silver nitrate solution for 24 hours, rinsed and immersed in photo-developing solution for 8 hours. Specimens were sectioned (90 nm-thick) and observed under TEM.ResultsMeans ranged from 25.0 to 73.1 MPa for MT and from 15.5 to 56.4 MPa for SP. MT values were greater than SP, but were highly correlated (R2 = 0.99, P= 0.003) and provided the same order for the systems studied. Fisher's PLSD intervals (P< 0.05) for bond strength techniques and adhesives results were 1.7 and 2.3 MPa, respectively. Failures sites were mixed. TEM showed that hybrid layers were -0.5 pm for PB, GB and S3 and approximately 5 microm for PLP. SEM showed morphologic differences among adhesives. Silver nitrate deposits were observed within the interfaces for all adhesive systems.

BackgroundAlthough using light-cured composites for bonding orthodontic brackets has become increasingly popular, curing light cannot penetrate the metallic bulk of brackets and polymerization of composites is limited to the edges. Limited access and poor direct sight may be a problem in the posterior teeth. Meanwhile, effectiveness of the trans-illumination technique is questionable due to increased bucco-lingual thickness of the posterior teeth. Light-emitting diode (LED) light-curing units cause less temperature rise and lower risk to the pulpal tissue. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of trans-illumination technique in bonding metallic brackets to premolars, using different light intensities and curing times of an LED light-curing unit.MethodsSixty premolars were randomly divided into six groups. Bonding of brackets was done with 40- and 80-s light curing from the buccal or lingual aspect with different intensities. Shear bond strengths of brackets were measured using a universal testing machine. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance test and Duncan's post hoc test.ResultsThe highest shear bond belonged to group 2 (high intensity, 40 s, buccal) and the lowest belonged to group 3 (low intensity, 40 s, lingual). Bond strength means in control groups were significantly higher than those in experimental groups.ConclusionsIn all experimental groups except group 6 (80 s, high intensity, lingual), shear bond strength was below the clinically accepted values. In clinical limitations where light curing from the same side of the bracket is not possible, doubling the curing time and increasing the light intensity during trans-illumination are recommended for achieving acceptable bond strengths.

The aim of this study was to perform a morphometric evaluation of the resin-root canal dentine interface of four "etch and rinse" adhesive systems. Forty human teeth were restored through a fiber post insertion using: Group 1: XP Bond adhesive; Group 2: Prime & Bond NT; Group 3: Surgi Prime Bond adhesive; Group 4: Scotchbond Multi-Purpose Plus. Two cross-sections (apical and coronal) were obtained and analyzed in morphological confocal laser scanning microscope. The numbers of resin tags (RT) and the thickness of the hybrid layer (HL) were evaluated. Quantitative variables were tested by a Shapiro-Wilk test. Parametric variables by an Anova test. Group 4 produced the thickest HL and Group 1 showed the thinnest. Considering RT, Group 1 produced the highest density, while Group 3 the lowest density. All the adhesives produced good results in terms of HL thickness and RT density.

Objective. The objective of this prospective clinical follow up was to evaluate the long term clinical performance of a hybrid resin composite in Class II restorations with and without intermediate layer of flowable resin composite. Methods. Each participant received at least two, as similar as possible, Class II restorations of the hybrid resin composite. One resin composite restoration of each pair (59) was chosen at random to be restored with an intermediary layer with flowable resin composite. The other was restored without. The 118 restorations were evaluated using slightly modified USPHS criteria at baseline and then yearly during 7 years. Results. Four drop outswere registered during the 7-year followup (2 with and 2 without flowable) restorations. A prediction of the caries risk showed that 18 of the evaluated 46 patients were considered as high risk patients. Seventeen failures were observed, 8 in restorations with and 9 in restorations without an intermediate layer of flowable resin composite, resulting in a 14.9% failure rate after 7 years. The main reasons for failure were: fracture of resin composite (8), secondary caries (4) and cusp fracture (3). No statistical difference was seen between restorations restored with and without flowable layer. Conclusion. The hybrid resin composite showed a good clinical performance during the 7-year evaluation. The use of flowable resin composite as an intermediate layer did not result in improved effectiveness of the Class II restorations., The objective of this prospective clinical follow up was to evaluate the long term clinical performance of a hybrid resin composite in Class II restorations with and without intermediate layer of flowable resin composite.

Objective: The objective of this prospective clinicaltrial study was to evaluatethe 4-year clinical performance of an ormocer-based nano-hybrid resin composite(CeramX;Dentsply/DeTrey) in Class II restorations placed with a one-step self-etch (XenoIII;Dentsply/DeTrey) and two-step etch-and-rinse adhesive(IvoclarVivadent). Methods: Seventy-eight participants received at random at least two, as similar as possible, Class II restorations of the nano-hybrid resin composite bonded with either a single step self-etch adhesive or a control 2-step etch-and-rince adhesive.The165restorations were evaluated using slightly modified USPHS criteria at baseline and then yearly during 4 years. Results: 162 restorations were evaluated at 4 years.Postoperative sensitivity was observed in 6 patients(3 Xeno III, 3Exite) between 1 and 3 weeks. Eleven failed restorations (6.8%) were observed during the followup. Seven in the one-step self-etch adhesive group (7.7%) and four int he2-step etch-and-rinse group(5.6%). This resulted in non-significant different annual failure rates of 1.9%and1.4%, respectively. Fracture of restoration was the main reason for failure. Conclusion: The ormocer-based nano-hybrid resin composite showed a good clinical per- formance in Class II cavities during the 4 year evaluation. The objective of this prospective clinical follow up was to evaluate the long term clinical performance of a hybrid resin composite in Class II restorations with and without intermediate layer of flowable resin composite. Methods. Each participant received at least two, as similar as possible, Class II restorations of the hybrid resin composite. One resin composite restoration of each pair (59) was chosen at random to be restored with an intermediary layer with flowable resin composite. The other was restored without. The 118 restorations were evaluated using slightly modified USPHS criteria at baseline and then yearly during 7 years. Results. Four drop outswere registered during the 7-year followup (2 with and 2 without flowable) restorations. A prediction of the caries risk showed that 18 of the evaluated 46 patients were considered as high risk patients. Seventeen failures were observed, 8 in restorations with and 9 in restorations without an intermediate layer of flowable resin composite, resulting in a 14.9% failure rate after 7 years. The main reasons for failure were: fracture of resin composite (8), secondary caries (4) and cusp fracture (3). No statistical difference was seen between restorations restored with and without flowable layer. Conclusion. The hybrid resin composite showed a good clinical performance during the 7-year evaluation. Results: 162 restorations were evaluated at 4 years.Postoperative sensitivity was observed in 6 patients(3 Xeno III, 3Exite) between 1 and 3 weeks. Eleven failed restorations (6.8%) were observed during the followup. Seven in the one-step self-etch adhesive group (7.7%) and four int he2-step etch-and-rinse group(5.6%). This resulted in non-significant different annual failure rates of 1.9%and1.4%, respectively. Fracture of restoration was the main reason for failure. Several studies in the literature have previously shown that the bond strength of a composite bonded to dentin is almost equivalent as when dentin is prepared by either bur or Er:YAG laser. The aim of this preliminary study is to assess the hypothesis that dentin conditioning at low fluency by means of Er:YAG laser can improve the value of adhesion of composites resin to dentin. Sixty surfaces of caries-free human third molars extracted for orthodontic purposes were randomly divided into five groups of 12 teeth. The bur group was the control, prepared using bur, group L was prepared using Er:YAG 200 mJ, SSP (50 µs), 20 Hz, 15 seconds of sweeping, for groups L80, L100, L120, they were prepared first, with the same parameters of the group L 200, and then they received a conditioning, which is, respectively, 15 s of irradiations at: 80 mJ (SSP, 10 Hz), 100 mJ (SSP, 10 Hz), and 120 mJ (SSP, 10 Hz). All samples were restored in a single-component adhesive system: Xenon (DENTSPLY), and ceramX (DENTSPLY) as the resin composite. The specimens were submitted to tensile bond strength test using a universal testing machine. Data were submitted to statistical analysis using ANOVA coupled to a Tukey-Kramer test at the 95% level. The mean values in MPa were 33.3 for group B, 36.73 for group L 200, 41.7 for group L80, 37.9 for group L100, and 39.1 for group L120. Our results showed that dentin conditioning at a low fluency of 12.58 J/cm(2) per pulse, with 80 mJ output energy and 50-µs pulse duration can significantly improve tensile bond strength of a composite bonded to Er:YAG laser-prepared dentine.
