This paper provides an analysis of the COVID-19 impacts on the profitability of the EU fishing fleets. Nowcasting techniques were used to estimate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economic performance for the EU fishing fleet in 2020 and 2021. Our results show that the economic impact of COVID-19 on this sector was smaller than initially expected and overall profits remained positive. This was in part due to low fuel prices that reduced operating costs of fishing, and the early response from governments to support the sector. The results vary by fishing fleet, revealing that small-scale fleets and the fleets in the Mediterranean and Black seas have been more impacted than large-scale fleets and the fleets in the Northeast Atlantic.

Objective: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has demonstrated the value of real-world data for public health research. International federated analyses are crucial for informing policy makers. Common data models (CDMs) are critical for enabling these studies to be performed efficiently. Our objective was to convert the UK Biobank, a study of 500â Š000 participants with rich genetic and phenotypic data to the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) CDM. Materials and Methods: We converted UK Biobank data to OMOP CDM v. 5.3. We transformedparticipant research data on diseases collected at recruitment and electronic health records (EHRs) from primary care, hospitalizations, cancer registrations, and mortality from providers in England, Scotland, and Wales. We performed syntactic and semantic validations and compared comorbidities and risk factors between source and transformed data. Results: We identified 502â Š505 participants (3086 with COVID-19) and transformed 690 fields (1â Š373â Š239â Š555 rows) to the OMOP CDM using 8 different controlled clinical terminologies and bespoke mappings. Specifically, we transformed self-reported noncancer illnesses 946â Š053 (83.91% of all source entries), cancers 37â Š802 (70.81%), medications 1â Š218â Š935 (88.25%), and prescriptions 864â Š788 (86.96%). In EHR, we transformed 13â Š028â Š182 (99.95%) hospital diagnoses, 6â Š465â Š399 (89.2%) procedures, 337â Š896â Š333 primary care diagnoses (CTV3, SNOMED-CT), 139â Š966â Š587 (98.74%) prescriptions (dm+d) and 77â Š127 (99.95%) deaths (ICD-10). We observed good concordance across demographic, risk factor, and comorbidity factors between source and transformed data. Discussion and Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that the OMOP CDM can be successfully leveraged to harmonize complex large-scale biobanked studies combining rich multimodal phenotypic data. This report explores the quantification of uncertainty in the NEWA production run and probabilistic ensemble. Uncertainty quantification relies on the availability of model simulations and observations. In areas where observations are not available, uncertainty addresses the quantification of the variability resulting from the sensitivity of the model chain tool resulting from the sampling of all the available model configurations tested. Uncertainty can be here regarded as the quantification of model sensitivity or model spread. In areas with availability of observations, the realism of the model ensemble is evaluated by establishing metrics of model-data comparison. Therefore, uncertainty is understood here as the result of the contributions of model sensitivity to different model setups, and of model errors in a model-data comparison framework. The first part of this report explores the uncertainty derived from model sensitivity subjected to the decisions taken regarding the use of different models setups and how these produce variability in model output. The range of this variability has been regarded as spread in model output and has been quantified in various manners. The second part of this report addresses how model performance can be characterised with the data at hand and whether decisions regarding selection of a given model setup for a production run can be taken on the basis of model performance in a variety of situations, using different variables and datasets as observational targets: wind data from tall masts in the Vestas database; wind speed profiles from tall masts and offshore lidars; surface (10-meter) wind data; satellite data and reanalysis outputs.

This report describes the sensitivity studies performed with the mesoscale model WRF in preparation of the mesoscale wind atlas production runs. The objective of this work was to find a modelsetup that is not just a best practice setup but well-founded and based on scientific evaluation. We started with performing some initial sensitivity experiments changing the PBL scheme and the initialisation of the model. The work was distributed among several partners, each conducting the same set of experiments but on a different domain. The objective of this first phase was to ensure that everybody speaks the same language in terms of applying WRF in the context of NEWA. The results were analysed and compared in terms of the mean wind climate. To draw conclusions regarding the quality of the experiments, the results of one domain were compared to tall mast observations. Overall the model showed a good performance with slightly better results for one of the two tested PBL schemes (MYNN) and weekly initialisation of simulations(compared to daily). In the next phase, further sensitivity tests were conducted for one of the previously defined domains, varying a multitude of parameters as e.g. model version, vertical resolution, forcing data and land surface parameterisation. These studies showed that virtually each parameter change is affecting the results in some way, while significant effects on the wind climate are mostly obtained by changes in physical parameterisation e.g. PBL scheme, representation of the land surface and surface roughness. However, also non-physical parameters as the simulation length and the domain size affects the results considerably. The results suggest to use rather small do-mains and not too long simulations (in the order of 1–2 weeks). ObjectiveInvestments have been made to alter the food environment of neighbourhoods that have a disproportionate number of unhealthy food venues. Corner store conversions are one strategy to increase access to fruits and vegetables (F&V). Although the literature shows modest success, the effectiveness of these interventions remains equivocal. The present paper reports on the evaluation of Proyecto MercadoFRESCO, a corner store conversion intervention in two Latino communities.DesignA repeated cross-sectional design was employed. Data were stratified by intervention arm and bivariate tests assessed changes over time. Logistic and multiple regression models with intervention arm, time and the interaction of intervention and time were conducted. Supplementary analyses account for clustering of patrons within stores and staggering of store conversions.SettingThree stores were converted and five stores served as comparisons in East Los Angeles and Boyle Heights, California, USA.SubjectsStore patrons were interviewed before (n550) and after (n407) the intervention.ResultsRelative to patrons of comparison stores, patrons of intervention stores demonstrated more favourable perceptions of corner stores and increased purchasing of F&V during that store visit. Changes were not detected in store patronage, percentage of weekly dollars spent on food for F&V or daily consumption of F&V.ConclusionsConsistent with some extant food environment literature, findings demonstrate limited effects. Investments should be made in multilevel, comprehensive interventions that target a variety retail food outlets rather than focusing on corner stores exclusively. Complementary policies limiting the availability, affordability and marketing of energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods should also be pursued.

A new ensemble method is explored for estimating the uncertainty of the wind resource within Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model simulations. The output of the ensemble simulations is processed to create a "map" showing the uncertainty in the wind resource estimate at each geographic location. This new method is demonstrated by performing a collection of 9 different WRF model simulations using combinations of 3 planetary boundary layer schemes, 2 simulation re-initialization strategies, and 2 methods for initializing the land surface state. The results of the simulations are validated against data from 10 meteorological masts in South Africa, part of the Wind Atlas of South Africa (WASA) project, where a long-term set of high-quality observations exist. The results of the ensemble simulations are encouraging, but further analysis is needed to quantify their utility. A key disadvantage of the ensemble simulation strategy employed herein, is that some members may tend to be highly similar to others, leading to overconfidence in the mean and spread of the simulations. Such overconfidence yields misleading estimates of the accuracy, value, and uncertainty of the wind resource.

Blood-based biomarkers (liquid biopsy) offer extremely valuable tools for the noninvasive diagnosis and monitoring of tumors. The protein c-MYC, a transcription factor that has been shown to be deregulated in up to 70% of human cancers, can be used as a robust proteomic signature for cancer. Herein, we developed a rapid, highly specific, and sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) assay for the quantification of c-MYC in real blood samples. The sensing scheme relies on the use of specifically designed hybrid plasmonic materials and their bioderivatization with a selective peptidic receptor modified with a SERS transducer. Peptide/c-MYC recognition events translate into measurable alterations of the SERS spectra associated with a molecular reorientation of the transducer, in agreement with the surface selection rules. The efficiency of the sensor is demonstrated in cellular lines, healthy donors and a cancer patient.

Die spontane Brechung der chiralen Symmetrie ist ein faszinierendes Phenomän der QCD mit fundamentalen phänomenologischen Implikationen. Die Brechung der chiral Symmetrie ist beispielsweise verantwortlich für die niedrige Masse der Pionen, welche die effektiven Goldstone Boson der spontan gebrochene Symmetrie sind. Die spontane Brechung der chiral Symmetrie und die chirale Anomalie sind niedrig Energie-Phenomäne der QCD, weshalb nichtperturbative Methoden nötig sind um sie zu studieren. In der vorliegenden Arbeit verwenden wir die Gitterregularisierung der QCD, um das chirale Kondensat, den Ordnungsparameter der spontanen Brechung der chiralen Symmetrie zu bestimen. Dazu wendeten wir die Definition der in dieser Arbeit studierten Observablen über Dichteketten an, die eine theoretisch wohldefinierte Bahndlung der Observablen zulässt. Für die praktische Berechnung wurde die kürzlich entwickelte Methode der spektralen Projektoren angewandt. In dieser Weise berchnen wir den Kontinuumlimes des chiralen Kondensates, das im chiralen Limes gewonnen, sowohl für N_f=2 als auch für N_f=2+1+1 Flavour von so genannten twisted mass Fermionen. Des Weiteren untersuchen wir das chirale Verhalten der topologischen Suszeptibilität. Wir verwenden hier wieder die Methode der spektralen Projektoren, anstelle aufwendigerer Verfahren, die chirale Symmetrie erhalten, aber zu numerisch sehr aufwändigen Simulationen führen. Schließ lich kommentieren wir die sich aus den starken Autokorrelationen ergebenden Schwierigkeiten dieser Rechnung. Abschließ end stellen wir die Kontinuumlimes-Ergebnisse der topologischen Suszeptibilität in der rein gluonischen Theorie vor, die es uns erlauben, die Witten-Veneziano-Formel zu testen. Unseren Untersuchung zufolge ist diese Formel gut erfüllt. Diese Tatsache stützt die Gültigkeit der Formel, die die topologischen Fluktuationen der Eichfelder mit der unerwartet groß en Masse des eta'' Mesons in Verbindung setzt., The spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry is a fascinating phenomenon of QCD whose mechanism is still not well understood and it has fundamental phenomenological implications. It is, for instance, responsible for the low mass of the pions which are effectively Goldstone bosons of the spontaneously broken symmetry. Since these phenomena belong to the low energy regime of QCD, non-perturbative techniques have to be applied in order to study them. In this work we use the twisted mass lattice QCD regularization to compute the chiral condensate, the order parameter of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking. To this end we apply the recently introduced method of spectral projectors which allows us to perform calculations in large volumes due to its inherently low computational cost. This approach, moreover, enables a direct calculation of the chiral condensate based on a theoretically clean definition of the observable via density chains. We thus present a continuum limit determination of the chirally extrapolated condensate for N_f=2 and N_f=2+1+1 flavours of twisted mass fermions at maximal twist. In addition we study the chiral behavior of the topological susceptibility, a measure of the topological fluctuations of the gauge fields. We again apply the spectral projector method for this calculation. We comment on the difficulties which appear in the calculation of this observable due to the large autocorrelations involved. Finally we present the continuum limit result of the topological susceptibility in the pure gluonic theory which allows us to perform a test of the Witten-Veneziano relation. We found that this relation is well satisfied. Our results support the validity of the Witten-Veneziano formula which relates the topological fluctuations of the gauge fields with the unexpectedly large value of the eta''

O enfoque da análise textual na dimensão crítica é, aqui, balizado pela Lingüística Sistêmico Funcional, sobretudo pela proposta de Halliday e Matthiessen (2004) no que concerne à relação entre os processos de transitividade da linguagem e outros elementos e aspectos da vida social. Os resultados apontam para uma realidade que tem sua fonte geradora na sociedade atual, a qual caminha na esteira das representações sociais, calçando as sandálias da cristalização de valores, atadas pelas tiras das desigualdades econômicas e, sobretudo, sociais., This study discusses the extent to which family rupture and street poverty are related, how they mutually exacerbate each other, and how they lead to further social deterioration. For this purpose, social manifestations are examined under the lens of Critical Discourse Analysis as proposed by Fairclough (2003), in conjunction with the theory of social representations (Moscovici, 2003). The critical dimension of text analysis is analyzed here, resorting to Systemic Functional Linguistics, especially Halliday and Matthiessen's proposal (2004) as regards the relationship between language transitivity processes and other elements and aspects of social life. The results point toward a reality generated in current society, a reality that involves social representations, the crystallization of values, and economic and especially social inequalities.
