This manual summarizes the existing techniques on the induced breeding, seed production, and culture of the African catfish based on surveys done in Iloilo, Philippines. SEAFDEC Aquaculture Department will present a standardized way of breeding and culturing the African catfish under captive conditions, but will not encourage growing them in natural freshwater habitats. Previous data have shown that their presence in lakes adversely affects the population of other indigenous species and may lead to a loss of biodiversity.

The present study conducted a comprehensive examination of the design and analysis of an offshore fish cage based on an existing fish cage known as ”shenlan.” The study began with a thorough site selection process, which resulted in the decision to position the fish cage around 20 kilometers from the massachusetts bay shore, at a water depth of 64.6 meters. To optimize the net design, computational fluid dynamics (cfd) simulations were conducted using the tdyn cfd+ht software. Finally, a seakeeping analysis was performed using the tdyn seafem software to assess the fish cage’s motions within acceptable limits.

Although most B cells in teleost systemic compartments co-express IgM and IgD on the surface, cells exclusively expressing either of the two Igs are common in fish mucosal tissues, providing us with a unique opportunity to further characterize IgD+IgM- B cells, an intriguing B cell subset. Hence, we compared the phenotype of IgD+IgM- cells to that of IgM+IgD- B cells in rainbow trout gills and skin, also establishing the response of these subsets to immune stimulation. The transcriptional profile and secreting capacity of IgD+IgM- B cells corresponded to that of cells that have started a differentiation program toward plasmablasts, similarly to IgM+IgD- B cells. Yet, IgM+IgD- B cells retained high levels of surface MHC II and antigen-processing abilities, while these were much lower in IgD+IgM- cells, suggesting important differences in their antigen-presenting capacities. Our findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the enigmatic role of IgD in mucosal surfaces.

Tilapia production in South Africa is failing to reach sustainable commercial levels of development, despite the efforts by the government to improve aquaculture production. Limpopo Province has been practicing fish farming since the 1980s, with tilapia being the most widely farmed fish. Currently, tilapia production in Capricorn and Vhembe districts in Limpopo Province remains low. In this study, factors affecting tilapia production in aqua dams, earthen ponds, concrete ponds, and RAS systems in Capricorn and Vhembe districts were explored. Eight different production systems were used to collect field data, four in each district. Water quality parameters in aqua dams, earthen ponds, concrete ponds, and RAS system were determined. The abundance of phytoplankton was determined in three different production systems. And lastly, a questionnaire was used to determine factors critical for successful tilapia production from the farmer’s perspective in Capricorn and Vhembe districts. The levels of ammonium and ammonia were below detection limits in all the production systems in Capricorn and Vhembe districts. The results showed that water temperature, alkalinity (as bicarbonate and carbonate), potassium, total phosphate frequently did not meet the requirement for the culture of tilapia in all the production systems in Capricorn and Vhembe district throughout the study. The concrete ponds, aqua dams, and RAS systems in both districts were mostly affected by these parameters. The phytoplankton abundance varied according to the type of production system and water quality parameters of the production systems. The concrete pond in Olifanshoek, Vhembe district had the highest total phytoplankton composition. An aqua dam in Bungeni had the highest total phytoplankton composition compared to other aqua dams in Capricorn district. The earthen ponds in Vondo in Vhembe district had the lowest tilapia yield and total phytoplankton composition compared to all the production systems in, Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development and the Aquaculture Research Unit

Studies on the biology and ecology of sea lice are lacking in tropical regions such as in Southeast Asia where finfish cage farming has grown dramatically in the past decades. This study investigated the seasonal population dynamics of ectoparasites infecting captive snubnose pompano (Trachinotus blochii) breeders in marine cages in the Philippines. The pompano breeders were found to be naturally coinfected with caligid copepod Lepeophtheirus spinifer and capsalid monogenean Neobenedenia sp. These breeders were monitored and examined bimonthly (n = 10 per sampling) from September 2017 to May 2018, covering the warm season and cold season in the Philippines. Our results clearly show that L. spinifer population maintain a 100 % prevalence throughout warm and cold seasons however, mean abundance and intensity increased only during the cold months (early November to early March) and displayed an oscillating trend during this period. Highest mean intensity was recorded in early January (221.4 ± 24.6; temperature = 27.5 ± 0.3 °C; salinity = 34.8 ± 0.3 ppt) while the lowest mean intensity was recorded during the warm months dipping to 12.5 ± 1.9 in early May (temperature = 30.5 ± 0.3 °C; salinity = 30.3 ± 0.3 ppt). The prevalence of adult and pre-adult was high throughout the monitoring period at 70–100 % except at the start of summer (late March to early May) for pre-adult (30–90 %). In comparison, the chalimus stages were only observed during the cold months specifically from early November to late January with prevalence of 40–80 %. The highest mean abundance (3.4 ± 0.7) and mean intensity (4.3 ± 0.6) was in early November which coincided with the first peak of the total L. spinifer population. Neobenedenia sp. occurred year-round with no significant changes in the population mean abundance and mean intensity between warm and cold seasons. Integrated agri-aquaculture systems (IAAS) have been studied as an option for fishproduction in communities with limited resources. Likewise, the use of periphyton hasrecently become a viable alternative for its contribution of low-cost natural food. Theeffect of periphyton use on the productive yield of a hybrid cachama and bocachicopolyculture in IAAS, was studied in the Jimaín Indigenous community, Colombia. Forthis experiment, 1.5 hybrid cachama and 1.5 bocachico fingerlings/m2 were stockedwith average weights of 0.49 ± 0.14 g and 1.83 ± 1.61 g, respectively, in six 90 m2 landponds; three of these ponds had wooden dowels (three dowels/m2) for periphyton fixation.The growth evaluation lasted 135 days. The treatments (WS: with substrate andWOS: without substrates) received a supplementary diet, adjusted as a percentage of thebiomass with biweekly adjustment, twice a day. Biometrics were performed every twoweeks. The productive data by species and for the polyculture were evaluated using anANOVA with a general linear model (p <0.05). Weight (g) and standard length (cm)data by species were evaluated using a mixed model of repeated measures. No substrateeffects were found on the productive parameters analyzed for each species as well as forthe polyculture. A significant interaction was observed for bocachico weight on day 90(WS: 74.7 and WOS: 47.1). El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto delperifiton sobre el desempeño productivo del policultivo Piaractus sp. (cachama híbrida)y Prochilodus magdalenae (bocachico) en SAAI en la comunidad Indígena de Jimaín,Colombia. Se sembraron 1,5 alevinos de cachama híbrida y 1,5 bocachicos/m2, con pesopromedio de 0,49 ± 0,14 g y 1,83 ±1,61 g respectivamente, en seis estaques en tierra de90 m2, tres de los cuales contaron con varas de madera (3 varas/m2) para la fijación deperifiton. La duración del cultivo fue de 135 días. Los tratamientos (CS: con sustratoy SS: sin sustratos) recibieron una dieta suplementaria dos veces al día, calculada comoporcentaje de la biomasa con ajuste quincenal. Se realizaron biometrías quincenales. Losdatos productivos por especie y para el policultivo se evaluaron mediante ANOVA conun modelo lineal general (p < 0,05). Los datos de peso (g) y longitud estándar (cm) porespecie se evaluaron mediante un modelo mixto de medidas repetidas. No se encontraronefectos del sustrato sobre los parámetros productivos analizados tanto para cada especie,como para el policultivo. Se presentó interacción significativa para el peso del bocachicoel día 90 (CS: 74,7 y SS: 47,1). Según los resultados obtenidos, la utilización de perifitony el manejo en policultivo de especies nativas requiere más estudios.

According to the obtained results, optimizing the use ofperiphyton and the management of native species polyculture requires further studies., Los Sistemas de Agro Acuicultura Integrada (SAAI) han sido estudiados como opciónpara la producción de pescado en comunidades con recursos limitados. Así mismo, eluso de perifiton se ha convertido recientemente en una alternativa viable por el aportede alimento natural de bajo costo. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto delperifiton sobre el desempeño productivo del policultivo Piaractus sp. (cachama híbrida)y Prochilodus magdalenae (bocachico) en SAAI en la comunidad Indígena de Jimaín,Colombia. Se sembraron 1,5 alevinos de cachama híbrida y 1,5 bocachicos/m2, con pesopromedio de 0,49 ± 0,14 g y 1,83 ±1,61 g respectivamente, en seis estaques en tierra de90 m2, tres de los cuales contaron con varas de madera (3 varas/m2) para la fijación deperifiton. La duración del cultivo fue de 135 días. Los tratamientos (CS: con sustratoy SS: sin sustratos) recibieron una dieta suplementaria dos veces al día, calculada comoporcentaje de la biomasa con ajuste quincenal. Se realizaron biometrías quincenales. Losdatos productivos por especie y para el policultivo se evaluaron mediante ANOVA conun modelo lineal general (p < 0,05). Los datos de peso (g) y longitud estándar (cm) porespecie se evaluaron mediante un modelo mixto de medidas repetidas. No se encontraronefectos del sustrato sobre los parámetros productivos analizados tanto para cada especie,como para el policultivo. Se presentó interacción significativa para el peso del bocachicoel día 90 (CS: 74,7 y SS: 47,1). Según los resultados obtenidos, la utilización de perifitony el manejo en policultivo de especies nativas requiere más estudios.

The pressing state of South Africa’s freshwater resources due to pollution from the release of raw sewage or poorly treated domestic wastewater, has resulted in the urgent need for the implementation of innovative ways to mitigate this problem. A proposed solution by the Council of Science and Industrial Research (CSIR) is to introduce different cultures of algae in wastewater treatment ponds where facilities have aged and become dilapidated. In turn fish are introduced into sewage maturation pond treated with algae to reduce algal biomass. The assumption being that if fish can survive under these conditions, the nutrients assimilated will be converted into fish biomass when ingested, in an attempt to decrease aquas nutrient loads. The aim of the study was to assess the health and survival of Oreochromis mossambicus exposed to wastewater from the Motetema wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and to establish the extent to which this species consumes micro-algae within the water column. The aim was accomplished by assessing the consumption of algae by O. mossambicus based on algal cell density counts in fish aquaria and to establish the feeding ratio of fish based on stomach content fullness as well as to monitor the survival rate of O. mossambicus exposed to various concentrations of sewage water over a 96-hour period. To establish fish survival under wastewater conditions, a 96-hour experiment was conducted in glass tanks (60 L), whereby the health and mortality of O. mossambicus exposed to different concentrations of domestic wastewater from Motetema WWTP was investigated. One set of aquariums supplied with compressed air via the use of diffusers while the other set of aquariums were void of aeration so as to simulate conditions at the treatment plant. Treatments comprising of four concentrations of 25, 50, 75 and 100% wastewater and a control of 0% were used. Water quality parameters were monitored every four hours and mortalities were recorded. Large tracts of mangroves have been converted into aquaculture ponds and the consequent loss of biodiversity has been much decried. This paper shows that high aquatic biodiversity is retained in mangrove-derived aquaculture ponds in Dumangas, Iloilo, Philippines. Documentation of biodiversity was carried out over two years in 15 adjacent ponds (water areas 0.25–0.9 ha) used for farming penaeid shrimps, mud crabs, milkfish, seabass, rabbitfish, and other fishes. At harvest, these ponds yielded many extraneous non-crop or “bycatch” species, which had been naturally seeded by the tides and had grown (and some species reproduced) over the 2–10 mo that the ponds were underwater. From 21 crop cycles were obtained 8–56 species (from 6–30 taxonomic families) of bycatch fishes and macrocrustaceans with biomass of 2.5–168.4 kg ha–1 and abundance of 2–92 x 103 individuals ha–1, the differences due to pond area, duration of immersion, farming system, crop species, and the bycatch community. Some 85 species (44 families) of fishes occurred in the ponds, including 12 species of gobies, of which the small-size Acentrogobius viganensis, Pseudogobius javanicus, Mugilogobius cavifrons, and Gobiopterus panayensis reached high abundance. Macrocrustaceans consisted of 30 species (nine families), including several penaeid and palaemonid shrimps (Metapenaeus ensis and Nematopalaemon tenuipes were most common) and portunid and grapsid crabs. Mollusks in the ponds included 58 species (24 families), of which Cerithideopsilla cingulata was most abundant. The Dumangas ponds were leaky and allowed tidal recruitment of many mangrove animals despite net screens and chemical treatments. Existing tidal ponds serve as proxy mangrove lagoons (wetlands) that can harbor high aquatic biodiversity.
