The major goal of animal production is to obtain abundant and healthy meat for consumers. Maternal food restriction (MFR) is often applied in farms to reduce production costs. However, the suitability of MFR in livestock animals is questionable, as this management may compromise maternal fitness due to a severe negative energetic balance and can induce Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR) and prenatal programming in the offspring. Here, we sought to determine, using pregnant rabbits, the consequences of MFR on maternal endocrine and metabolic status and conceptus development. Pregnant dams were distributed into three groups: CONTROL (ad libitum feeding throughout the entire pregnancy; mean pregnancy length being around 31 days), UNDERFED (50% MFR during the entire pregnancy) and EARLY-UNDERFED (50% MFR only during the preimplantation period, Days 0-7). Maternal leptin concentrations and glycemic and lipid profiles were determined throughout pregnancy, whilst conceptus development was assessed ex-vivo at Day 28. Placental parameters were determined by macroscopic and histological evaluations and apoptotic assessments (TUNEL and Caspase-3). The main results of the study showed that, despite MFR altered maternal plasma lipid concentration (P<0.05), there were no effects on maternal bodyweight, plasma leptin concentration or glycemic profile. Fetal crown-rump lengths were reduced in both undernourished groups (P<0.001), but a significant reduction in fetal weight was only observed in the UNDERFED group (P<0.001). Growth in both undernourished groups was asymmetrical, with reduced liver weight (P<0.001) and significantly increased brain: fetal weight-ratio (P<0.001) and brain: liver weight-ratio (P<0.001) when compared to the CONTROL group. A significant reduction in placental weight was only observed in the UNDERFED group (P<0.001), despite both undernourished groups showing higher apoptotic rates at decidua and labyrinth zone (P<0.05) than the CONTROL group. Supplementation of a mother's diet with antioxidants, such as hydroxytyrosol (HTX), has been proposed to ameliorate the adverse phenotypes of fetuses at risk of intrauterine growth restriction. In the present study, sows were treated daily with or without 1.5 mg of HTX per kilogram of feed from day 35 of pregnancy (at 30% of total gestational period), and individuals were sampled at three different ages: 100-day-old fetuses and 1-month- and 6-month-old piglets. After euthanasia, the brain was removed and the hippocampus, amygdala, and prefrontal cortex were dissected. The profile of the catecholaminergic and serotoninergic neurotransmitters (NTs) was characterized and an immunohistochemical study of the hippocampus was performed. The results indicated that maternal supplementation with HTX during pregnancy affected the NT profile in a brain-area-dependant mode and it modified the process of neuron differentiation in the hippocampal CA1 and GD areas, indicating that cell differentiation occurred more rapidly in the HTX group. These effects were specific to the fetal period, concomitantly with HTX maternal supplementation, since no major differences remained between the control and treated groups in 1-month- and 6-month-old pigs.

The present study aimed to determine benefits and risks of a dietary supplementation combining hydroxytyrosol and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) on prenatal development and metabolic traits in swine, a model of intrauterine growth restricted (IUGR) pregnancies. No effects were found regarding sows' weight and adiposity. Treated sows had larger litters, with smaller fetuses. However, these animals had better development of some major organs. Fetuses from the treated group had better glycemic and lipidic indexes, but no effects on anti/prooxidant profiles were found. Maternal supplementation with antioxidants and n-3 PUFAs may be a promising strategy to reduce the risk of intrauterine growth restriction and preterm delivery, which may diminish the appearance of low-birth-neonates. A previous studies showed beneficial outcomes of the combination of hydroxytyrosol and linoleic acid, but there is no data of its prenatal effects. The present study aimed to determine the possible prenatal implications of such maternal supplementation at prenatal stages in swine, a model of IUGR pregnancies. Results showed effects on litter size, with treated sows having larger litters and, therefore, smaller fetuses. However, the brain/head weight ratio showed a positive effect of the treatment in development, as well as in some other major organs like lungs, spleen, or kidneys. On the other hand, treated piglets showed better glycemic and lipidemic profiles, which could explain postnatal effects. However, further research on the implications of the treatment on litter size and prenatal and postnatal development must be done before practical recommendation can be given.

Nutritional strategies during pregnancy in swine production are considered essential to increase the number of piglets born alive and improve their survival and development. Amino acids, such as glutamine, are among the best compound to introduce in commercial farms after obtaining positive results in trials carried out in selected swine breeds. However, several critical productive factors have to be assessed before translating these strategies to the farm level to ensure the best balance between benefits and investments. The current study focused on the effects of prenatal L-glutamine supplementation on the offspring of Iberian gilts and sows under farm conditions. It is the first trial of amino acid supplementation during pregnancy carried out in traditional swine breeds. These non-selected swine breeds show productive or physiological differences that could affect the supplementation effect. Indeed, although there were changes at the molecular and tissue level, these effects did not turn into advantageous effects for the offspring of traditional breeds. The present study shows the importance of pre-testing nutritional strategies under the final conditions and breeds of implementation and the need to deepen at the molecular level to improve the biological interpretation of findings. The use of amino acids during pregnancy, such as glutamine (Gln), seems to be a promising strategy in selected swine breeds to improve the offspring prenatal development. The main goal of the current study was to assess the development of the offspring from parity 1-3 sows of a traditional breed, which were supplemented with 1% glutamine after Day 35 of gestation, under farm conditions. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (GnRH-ChNPs) were used at different doses and routes of administration to induce ovulation in rabbits as an attempt to improve artificial insemination (AI) procedures and outcomes. In this study, the characteristics (size, polydispersity, loading efficiency, and zeta-potential) of GnRH-ChNPs and the GnRH release pattern were determined in an in vitro study. A first in vivo study assessed the pituitary and ovarian response to different GnRH-ChNPs doses and routes of administration (two i.m. doses, Group HM = 0.4 µg and Group QM = 0.2 µg, and two intravaginal doses, Group HV = 4 µg and Group QV = 2 µg) against a control group (C) receiving bare GnRH (0.8 µg). The HM, QM, and HV treatments induced an earlier LH-surge (90 min) than that observed in group C (120 min), whilst the QV treatment failed to induce such LH surge. The number of ovulation points was similar among treatments, except for the QV treatment (no ovulation points). A second in vivo study was consequently developed to determine the hormonal (progesterone, P4, and estradiol, E2) profile and pregnancy outcomes of both HM and HV treatments against group C. The treatment HM, but not the treatment HV, showed adequate P4 and E2 concentrations, conception and parturition rates, litter size, litter weight, and viability rate at birth. Overall, the use of GnRH-ChNPs allows for a reduction in the conventional intramuscular GnRH dose to half without compromising fertility. However, the addition of GnRH-ChNPs to semen extenders, although successfully inducing ovulation, has negative impacts on fertility. Thus, more studies are needed to explore this point and allow further adjustments.

Twenty-four adult rabbit bucks (n = 6 per treatment) were fed a basal diet supplemented with 0 (control), 50, 100, and 150 mg proline/kg dry matter (DM) diet for 12 weeks to determine possible usefulness for alleviating the negative impact of environmental heat stress on redox status, haemato-biochaemical attributes and semen quality. There were significant dose-response effects, with increments in levels of dietary proline (LDP) quadratically improving red blood cell counts (p = 0.017), rectal temperature (p = 0.009), and respiratory rate (p < 0.001). Increasing LDP cubically affected superoxide dismutase activity in blood plasma (p = 0.012) and total antioxidant capacity in both blood and seminal plasma (p < 0.001 and p = 0.006, respectively). The optimal response was observed at 30 and 80 mg proline/kg DM for blood and seminal plasma, respectively. With regards to homeostasis indexes, increments in LDP cubically modified blood plasma concentrations of total protein (p = 0.002) and albumin (p < 0.001), with an optimal response found at 70 mg proline/kg DM. A linear relationship (p = 0.005) was also observed between LDP and blood plasma glucose concentrations, with the optimal response being found at 100 mg proline/kg DM. Increasing LDP also showed positive effects on reproductive traits, with quadratic increases in blood plasma testosterone and cortisol concentrations (p < 0.001; optimal responses at 50 and 60 mg proline/kg DM, respectively), a positive linear relationship with in libido, ejaculate volume, sperm concentration and total sperm count (p < 0.001 for all; optimal responses observed at 100 mg proline/kg DM) and a quadratic increase in total functional sperm fraction (p < 0.001; optimal response at 70 mg proline mg/kg DM). Hence, the optimal positive effects of dietary proline supplementation on redox status, blood metabolites, and reproductive traits of rabbit bucks may be achieved at 50-100 mg/kg DM.

Metformin is currently used to improve pregnancy outcome in women affected by polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or diabetes. However, metformin may also be useful in pregnancies at risk of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) since it improves placental efficiency and the fetuses’ developmental competence. There is no data on the duration of the effect of this treatment from the prenatal up to the postnatal stages. Therefore, the present trial aimed at determining the impact of metformin treatment on the offspring neonatal traits and early postnatal development (i.e., during lactation) using an in vivo swine model. The results support that maternal metformin treatment during pregnancy induces protective changes in body shape and composition of the progeny (i.e., larger head size and body length at birth and higher total viscera weight at weaning). However, there were also major effects of the offspring sex (smaller corpulence in females and lower relative weight of main viscerae in males), which should be considered for further preclinical studies and when even the current clinical application in women affected by PCOS or diabetes is implemented.

The results obtained indicate that maternal supplementation with hydroxytyrosol and n-3 fatty acids during pregnancy has no deleterious effects on the reproductive traits of the sows (prolificacy, homogeneity of the litter, and percentage of stillborns and low-birth-weight, LBW, piglets) and the postnatal features of the piglets (growth patterns, adiposity, and metabolic traits). Conversely, in spite of a lower mean weight and corpulence at birth, piglets from the supplemented sows showed higher average daily weight gain and fractional growth rate. Thus, at juvenile stages afterwards, the offspring from the treated group reached higher weight and corpulence, with increased muscle development and better lipidemic and fatty acid profiles, in spite of similar adiposity, than offspring in the control group. However, much caution and more research are still needed before practical recommendation and use in human pregnancies.

The present study assessed the relationship between obesity induced by lifestyle and systemic oxidative stress and possible modulations by oral metformin treatments in young individuals, by using a translational swine model of obesity and associated cardiometabolic disorders (Iberian pig). The results indicate the existence of an age-related increase in both adiposity and systemic oxidative stress (using hydrogen peroxide as a marker), which is higher in individuals with obesogenic lifestyle and increased weight and obesity. Such effect was not found in individuals treated with metformin. The translation of these results suggests that childhood obesity increases production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and therefore systemic oxidative stress. Treatment with metformin would improve such oxidative status.

The current work evaluated the relative effects of the number of piglets in the litter of origin (high vs. low litter size) and the birthweight (low (LBW) vs. normal (NBW) in large litters) on postnatal performance and quality of carcasses and meat in purebred Iberian pigs. The results indicated that NBW piglets born in large litters had disparities in developmental patterns in weight and size, back-fat deposition, and fatty acid composition of viscerae compared to NBW piglets from small litters, which again were different from those found in LBW piglets when compared to their NBW counterparts. However, both growth patterns were altered and might indicate previous phases of metabolic disorders.

Identifying metabolite signatures associated with obesity and related diseases might represent a valuable preventive and therapeutic tool to predict subjects at risk, establish an accurate prognosis, and monitor treatment success. The current cross-sectional study is aimed to evaluate the metabolite profile of diet-induced obesity in a porcine model of leptin resistance. Six Iberian female pigs prone to develop obesity (OB) were ad libitum fed a fat-enriched diet (HFD) for 82 days. Five lean Iberian sows (CON) in a maintenance diet served as controls. At the end of the dietary treatments, all animals were sacrificed, and plasma, liver, and muscle samples were immediately collected for nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. In plasma, signals corresponding to betaine, glycerophosphocholine/phosphocholine, glycine, and glutamate were decreased; and the valine signal was increased in OB sows compared to controls. Similarly, the betaine signal was decreased in the liver. No differences were detected in muscle. The observed metabolite changes suggest alterations in branched chain amino-acid metabolism and the methionine-homocysteine cycle, which have been previously associated with obesity-related diseases and type 2 diabetes in human observational studies. The current study supports the utilization of the leptin resistant Iberian pig for further interventional research in the field.

Pregnancy and lactation are challenging states that affect maternal and lamb health. In Lacaune dairy sheep, we evaluated the impact of parity, pregnancy rank, and body condition on body weight and the condition of ewes and lambs in mid-pregnancy (75 5 d), in late pregnancy (142 4d), and postpartum (52 5d pp). Maternal age was associated with initial decreases, followed by increases, in body weight and condition. After lambing, both mature and maiden ewes lost weight and body condition. Maternal indices of glucose, protein, and lipid metabolism were within physiological values during pregnancy, but postpartum values depended on maternal parity and pregnancy rank, with multiple-pregnant ewes showing a postpartum increase in glucose and maiden sheep a postpartum increase in plasma cholesterol concentration. Male lambs were heavier than female lambs at birth, and lambs born to mothers with higher body condition scores were heavier. Lambs born as singletons were heavier than those born in litters. Maternal age and pregnancy rank did not influence lamb metabolic indicators. Sex affected plasma concentrations of glucose, triglycerides, and cholesterol. Maternal metabolic indicators showed minimal effects on lamb phenotype. These results suggest that, when appropriately fed, dairy sheep can cover the metabolic demands of pregnancy and milk production, regardless of age and pregnancy rank.

Maternal supplementation with hydroxytyrosol, a polyphenol present in olive leaves and fruits, is a highly promising strategy to improve the oxidative and metabolic status of fetuses at risk of intrauterine growth restriction, which may diminish the appearance of low-birth-weight neonates. The present study aimed to determine whether hydroxytyrosol, by preventing lipid peroxidation, may influence the fat accretion and energy homeostasis in the liver, as well as the fatty acid composition in the liver and muscle. The results indicate that hydroxytyrosol treatment significantly decreased the energy content of the fetal liver, without a ecting fat accretion, and caused significant changes in the availability of fatty acids. There were significant increases in the amount of total polyunsaturated fatty acids, omega-3 and omega-6, which are highly important for adequate fetal tissue development. However, there were increases in the omega-6/omega-3 ratio and the desaturation index, which make further studies necessary to determine possible e ects on the pro/anti-inflammatory status of the fetuses.

Leptin resistance is associated with lower reproductive efficiency, with deficiencies in embryo viability and growth leading to low prolificacy and high incidence of intrauterine growth restriction.

Objectives: Physiological states as pregnancy and lactation modify metabolism in sheep. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of pregnancy features (parity and type of pregnancy) on the maternal metabolism in high yielding Lacaune dairy sheep. Material and methods: The study was carried out in a single commercial farm on 334 Lacaune dairy sheep, classified by age (187 mature and 147 maiden ewes), parity (145 multiparous vs. 42 primiparous) and type of pregnancy (161 single vs. 173 multiple). Fasting plasma samples were collected at two points during pregnancy mid and late-pregnancy (74±5 and 141±3 d, respectively) and postpartum (52±5 d after delivery). The following metabolic parameters were considered: plasma ß-hydroxybutyrate (ß-OHB), nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), glucose, lactate, urea, cholesterol, triglycerides and fructosamine. Differences among groups and interactions were evaluated with ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis test when non-normal distributed. Results: ß-OHB was higher during gestation in mature than in maiden ewes (0.58±0.20 vs. 0.37±0.11 mmol/L; P< 0.0001) at mid pregnancy, (0.67±0.34 vs. 0.55±0.21 mmol/L; P< 0.0001) and late pregnancy, but did not differ with age at postpartum (0.78±0.25 vs. 0.74±0.23 mmol/L; P> 0.05). During gestation ß-OHB was not affected by type of pregnancy, although, postpartum ß-OHB was lower in ewes that had carried out single gestation than in those with multiple pregnancy (0.59±0.27 vs. 0.65±0.31 mmol/L; P< 0.01). At mid pregnancy NEFA were lower in mature than in maiden ewes (0.46±0.22 vs. 0.57±0.17 mmol/L; P< 0.0001); whereas NEFA were higher in mature at late pregnancy and postpartum (0.67±0.29 vs. 0.55± 0.18 mmol/L; P< 0.0001 for late pregnancy); (0.50±0.18 vs. 0.44±0.16 mmol/L; P=0.004 for postpartum). At late pregnancy, ewes carrying a single pregnancy showed lower NEFA than those with multiple foetuses (0.57±0.25 vs. 0.67±0.25 mmol/L; P< 0.0001). Objectives: In order to reduce non-productive days in dairy ewe production, the “accelerated sheep mating systems” can be used. One example is the STAR system, which involves up to 5 lambings/ewe in 3 years (1.2 to 1.4 lambing/ewe/year) through 5 successive annual breeding and lambing seasons (5LY). Despite its feasibility, a major disadvantage to this system is an irregular distribution of the workload throughout the year. For instance, the farm staff capacity is easily overwhelmed during the lambings periods, resulting in a deficient care of the newborns. In an attempt to distribute the workload more evenly, a high-yielding Lacaune farm transitioned from the 5LY system to a novel one consisting on 10 lambing periods per year (10LY). The present study examines the efficiency, productivity and workload concentration in this farm under both systems. Its goal was to determine the effects of a more intensive management system on the farm’s productivity, animal welfare and workload distribution. Material and methods: This observational study was performed in a high-yielding Lacaune dairy ewe farm (“Granja Cerromonte”, Spain). The 5LY system was performed from 2010 to 2012, and the 10LY system from 2014 to 2015. Years 2009 and 2013 were considered transition years. During this period, 27,415 lactations were recorded from an average of 3,746 ewes/year. Results: Daily production (1.70 ± 0.62 l/d vs 1.73 ± 1.66; P = 0.038), interlambing period (302 ± 44 vs 283 ± 50 d; P < 0.0001) and lambings/ewe/year (1.30 ± 0.01 vs1.42 ± 0.01; P < 0.05) slightly worsened in the 10LY system compared to the 5LY one. In contrast, milk yield/lactation (370 ± 156 vs. 349 ± 185 L), lactation length (218±75 vs 192 ± 75 d) and dry period length (53.5 ± 38.3 vs 69.1 ± 34.8 d) (all P < 0.0001) were better in the 10LY system. This study described the productive data evolution from 71 dairy herds over ten years (2008 to 2017). During this period, two global management strategies changed: timed Artificial Insemination (AI) programs since 2011 onwards and composting bedding systems since 2014. The results showed an increase of total cows/ herd (293±299 in 2008 vs 498±558 cattle in 2017), and maximal herd size (980 in 2008 vs 2,505 cattle in 2017). The percentage of heifers (based on the total of animals) was 69.0% without a tendency of change over the years. Regarding production, average daily milk yield per lactating cow increased with time (30.3±2.5 in 2008 vs 33.5±2.2 l/cow in 2017). While calving to first AI interval and estrous detection rate remained stable (91 days and 51.2%, respectively), average days in milk decreased with time (204±14d in 2008 vs 195±16d in 2017). Similarly, the total of AIs per pregnancy decreased from 4.4±1.2 in 2008 to 3.6±1.1 AI/P in 2017. Accordingly to these data, conception and pregnancy rates increased (CR=28.7±5.0% and PR=15.0±3.5% in 2008 vs CR=32.0±5.6% and PR=16.4±4.3 in 2017). Age at first AI decreased from 16.1±1.4 m of age in 2008 to 14.8±51.5 m in 2017, with a reduced age at first calving from 26±1.7 m to 25.1±1.6 m of age in 2017. Neonatal mortality was 8.5%/year during the whole period, with a minimum of 7.2% in 2013 and a maximum of 13.4% in 2008. The annual percentage of culled cows remained stable (29.1±6.8 in 2008 vs 29.8±7.2% in 2017). Dry period length decreased from 64±10 in 2008 to 62±9d in 2017, without an apparent decreasing tendency over the period. In conclusion, the increase in the size of farms is confirmed during this ‘after milk quota period’. The historically impaired fertility with an increasing individual production could not be observed. Moreover, cow’s fertility and heifers reproductive efficiency (age at first calving) improved during this period.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of physiological and productive factors of ewes (age and type of pregnancy and level of milk production) during pregnancy on birth weight of lambs. The study was carried out in a single commercial farm on 334 Lacaune dairy sheep, classified by age (187 mature and 147 maiden ewes), pregnancy type (155 single vs 179 multiple pregnancies), milk production average milk yield per day (YDIM),from conception to drying off; 45 Low yielding, LYDIM, <1.37 l/d; 70 Average yielding, AYDIM, 1.37 to <1.8l/d; 72 High yielding, HYDIM, >1.8 l/d; and average milk yield per day during month of conception (Yc); 45 Low yielding, LYc, <0.91 l/d; 70 Average yielding, AYc, 0.91 to <1.3 l/d; and 72 High yielding, HYc, >1.3 l/d). Lambs body weight was recorded in 576 lambs (253 males, 323 females) at birth and at 18 days old. Differences among groups were evaluated with ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis test when non-normal distributed. The lambs born to mature ewes were heavier than those from maiden ewes both at birth (4.2±0.8 vs 3.5±0.8 kg; P<0.0001) and at 18 d-old (8.8±2.0 vs 6.8±1.6 kg; P<0.0001). Newborns from single pregnancies were heavier at birth than those born from multiple pregnancies (4.3±0.9 vs 3.8±0.8 kg; P<0.0001), but no difference was found at 18 d-old (8.0±2.1 vs 7.9±2.1 kg; P>0.05). The birth weight of lambs was similar in the groups HYDIM and AYDIM and heavier in these both groups than lambs from the groups LYDIM (4.3±0.8; 4.3±0.8; 4.0±0.8 kg; P<0.05); there were no differences at 18 d-old. Concomitantly, lambs of the groups HYc and AYc were heavier than lambs in the group LYc at birth (4.4±0.8; 4.2±0.7; 4.1±0.8 kg; P>0.05), but values were similar among the three groups at 18 d-old. The present study suggests that, age, type of pregnancy and level of milk production during gestation in ewes are determinants of lamb birth weight.

Currently, radiography is the only imaging technique used to diagnose bone pathology in wild animals situated under "field conditions". Nevertheless, while chronic foot disease in captive mega-herbivores is widely reported, foot radiographic imaging is confronted with scarcity of studies. Numerous hindrances lead to such limited numbers and it became very clear that the traditional perspective on bone imaging in domestic animals based on extensive studies and elaborated statistical evaluations cannot be extrapolated to their non-domestic relatives. For these reasons, the authors initiated a multi-modality imaging study and established a pioneering approach of synchronized computed tomography (CT) and digital radiography (DR), based on X-ray projections derived from three-dimensional CT reconstructed images. Whereas this approach can be applied in any clinical field, as a case of outstanding importance and great concern for zoological institutions, we selected foot bone pathologies in captive rhinoceroses to demonstrate the manifold applications of the method. Several advances were achieved, endowing the wildlife clinician with all-important tools: prototype DR exposure protocols and a modus operandi for foot positioning, advancing both traditional projections and, for the first-time, species-related radiographic views; assessment of radiographic diagnostic value for the whole foot and, in premiere, for each autopodial bone; together with additional insights into radiographic appearance of bone anatomy and pathology with a unique, simultaneous CT-DR correlation. Poor eating behavior has been identified as one of the core contributory factors of the childhood obesity epidemic.The consequences of obesity on numerous aspects of life are thoroughly explored in the existing literature.For instance, evidence shows that obesity is linked to incidences of diseases such as heart disease, type-2 diabetes, and some cancers, as well as psycho social problems.To respond to the increasing trends in the UK, in 2008 the government set a target to reverse the prevalence of obesity (POB) back to 2000 levels by 2020. This paper will outline the application of system dynamics (SD) optimization to simulate the effect of changes in the eating behavior of British children (aged 2 to 15 years) on weight and obesity. This study also will identify how long it will take to achieve the government’s target. This paper proposed a simulation model called Intervention Childhood Obesity Dynamics (ICOD) by focusing the interrelations between various strands of knowledge in one complex human weight regulation system. The model offers distinct insights into the dynamics by capturing the complex inter dependencies from the causal loop and feedback structure, with the intention to better understand how eating behaviors influence children’s weight, body mass index (BMI), and POB measurement. This study proposed a set of equations that are revised from the original (baseline) equations. The new functions are constructed using a RAMP function of linear decrements in portion size and number of meal variables from 2013 until 2020 in order to achieve the 2020 desired target. Findings from the optimization analysis revealed that the 2020 target won’t be achieved until 2026 at the earliest, six years late.Thus, the model suggested that a longer period may be needed to significantly reduce obesity in this population.
