Die thermische Magnetresonanz (ThermalMR) integriert Radiofrequenz (RF)-induzierte Erwärmung, in vivo Temperaturkartierung mittels MR-Thermometrie, anatomische und funktionelle MR-Bildgebung (MRT) und die Option für die x-Kern-MRT in einem einzigen, vielseitig einsetzbaren RF-Applikator. Der Aufbau erlaubt eine gezielte und überwachte Temperaturmodulation und kann somit als Basis für Studien dienen, welche die Klärung grundlegender Fragen bezüglich der molekularen, biochemischen, sowie physiologischen und therapeutischen Auswirkungen der Temperatur in Organismen ermöglichen. In dieser Arbeit wurde ein kostengünstiges, automatisiertes Open-Source-3D-Mehrzweck-Messsystem mit Submillimeter-Genauigkeit implementiert und validiert, um technische Entwicklungen in der thermischen MR wie Antennendesign, Signalgeneratoren, und simulationsbasierte Methoden zu prüfen. Um den Anforderungen eines modernen ThermalMR-Systems gerecht zu werden, wird ein neuer auf einem Phasenregelkreis basierender RF-Signalgenerator für Hyperthermie entwickelt und über dessen Entwurf, Implementierung, Validierung und Anwendung berichtet. Der Signalgenerator ist in der Lage, 32 unabhängige RF-Signale mit präziser Einstellung der Parameter dieser Signale zu erzeugen. Das in dieser Arbeit entwickelte Mehrkanal-RF-Überwachungsmodul ermöglicht das Detektieren von Abweichungen bezogen auf die gewählten Einstellungen und ermöglicht eine Korrektur der RF-Signale in einem Regelkreis. Darüber hinaus ermöglicht das Überwachungsmodul das Erkennen von Bewegungen und ermöglicht zusätzliche Sicherheit in einem realen Behandlungssetup. In dieser Arbeit wurden Forschung und Entwicklung in Informatik, Physik und Biowissenschaften synergetisch miteinander verbunden. Die in dieser Arbeit entwickelte Infrastruktur bildet eine technologische Basis für zukünftige ThermalMR-Anwendungen., Thermal magnetic resonance (ThermalMR) integrates radio frequency (RF)-induced heating, in vivo temperature mapping using MR thermometry, anatomic and functional MR imaging (MRI), and the option for x-nuclei MRI in a single, multi-purpose RF applicator. This permits supervised targeted temperature modulation, thus enables pioneering studies to clarify fundamental questions pertaining to the molecular, biochemical, broader physiological and therapeutic effects of temperature in organisms. In this work, a cost-effective, automated open source 3D multipurpose measurement system with submillimeter fidelity was implemented and validated to facilitate technical developments in ThermalMR such as RF antenna design and algorithm verification. The design, implementation, validation, and application of the first phase-locked loop based RF signal generator in hyperthermia that is capable of generating 32 channels of independent RF signals with fine-tuning resolutions of the signals’ parameters meet the demanding requirements of a state-of-the-art RF heating system. The multi-channel RF supervision module developed in this work outperforms state-of-the-art counterparts. The detection of head motion in a hyperthermia setting was demonstrated for the first time with the RF supervision module. This work synergistically connects research and development in computer science, physics, and life science. The infrastructure developed in this work forms a technological basis for future ThermalMR applications.

Clock synchronization has always been a major challenge when designing wireless networks. This work focuses on tackling the time synchronization problem in 5G networks by adopting a hybrid Bayesian approach for clock offset and skew estimation. Furthermore, we provide an in-depth analysis of the impact of the proposed approach on a synchronization-sensitive service, i.e., localization. Specifically, we expose the substantial benefit of belief propagation (BP) running on factor graphs (FGs) in achieving precise network-wide synchronization. Moreover, we take advantage of Bayesian recursive filtering (BRF) to mitigate the time-stamping error in pairwise synchronization. Finally, we reveal the merit of hybrid synchronization by dividing a large-scale network into local synchronization domains and applying the most suitable synchronization algorithm (BP- or BRF-based) on each domain. The performance of the hybrid approach is then evaluated in terms of the root mean square errors (RMSEs) of the clock offset, clock skew, and the position estimation. In this work, we propose a Deep neural network-assisted Particle Filter-based (DePF) approach to address the Mobile User (MU) joint synchronization and localization (sync\&loc) problem in ultra dense networks. In particular, DePF deploys an asymmetric time-stamp exchange mechanism between the MUs and the Access Points (APs), which, traditionally, provides us with information about the MUs' clock offset and skew. However, information about the distance between an AP and an MU is also intrinsic to the propagation delay experienced by exchanged time-stamps. In addition, to estimate the angle of arrival of the received synchronization packet, DePF draws on the multiple signal classification algorithm that is fed by Channel Impulse Response (CIR) experienced by the sync packets. The CIR is also leveraged on to determine the link condition, i.e. Line-of-Sight (LoS) or Non-LoS. Finally, to perform joint sync\&loc, DePF capitalizes on particle Gaussian mixtures that allow for a hybrid particle-based and parametric Bayesian Recursive Filtering (BRF) fusion of the aforementioned pieces of information and thus jointly estimate the position and clock parameters of the MUs. The simulation results verifies the superiority of the proposed algorithm over the state-of-the-art schemes, especially that of Extended Kalman filter- and linearized BRF-based joint sync\&loc. In particular, only drawing on the synchronization time-stamp exchange and CIRs, for 90$\%$of the cases, the absolute position and clock offset estimation error remain below 1 meter and 2 nanoseconds, respectively.

To examine the system properties, switching/settling times, accuracy of RF power level and phase shifting were characterized. Electric field manipulation was successfully demonstrated in deionized water. RF heating was conducted in a phantom setup using self-grounded bow-tie RF antennae driven by the SGPLL. Commercial signal generators limited to a lower number of RF channels were used for comparison. RF heating was evaluated with numerical temperature simulations and experimentally validated with MR thermometry. Numerical temperature simulations and heating experiments controlled by the SGPLL revealed the same RF interference patterns. Upon RF heating similar temperature changes across the phantom were observed for the SGPLL and for the commercial devices. To conclude, this work presents the first 32-channel modular signal source for RF heating. In this work, we propose a hybrid Bayesian approach towards clock offset and skew estimation, thereby synchronizing large scale networks. In particular, we demonstrate the advantage of Bayesian Recursive Filtering (BRF) in alleviating time-stamping errors for pairwise synchronization. Moreover, we indicate the benefit of Factor Graph (FG), along with Belief Propagation (BP) algorithm in achieving high precision end-to-end network synchronization. Finally, we reveal the merit of hybrid synchronization, where a large-scale network is divided into local synchronization domains, for each of which a suitable synchronization algorithm (BP- or BRF-based) is utilized. In this paper, we obtain and study typical beam entropy values for millimetre wave (mm-wave) channel models using the NYUSIM simulator for frequencies up to 100 GHz for fifth generation (5G) and beyond 5G cellular communication systems. The beam entropy is used to quantify sparse MIMO channel randomness in beamspace. Lower relative beam entropy channels are suitable for memory-assisted statistically-ranked (MarS) and hybrid radio frequency (RF) beam training algorithms. High beam entropies can potentially be advantageous for low overhead secured radio communications by generating cryptographic keys based on channel randomness in beamspace, especially for sparse multiple input multiple output (MIMO) channels. Terahertz spectrum is being researched upon to provide ultra-high throughput radio links for indoor applications, e.g., virtual reality (VR), etc. as well as outdoor applications, e.g., backhaul links, etc. This paper investigates a monopulse-based beam tracking approach for limited mobility users relying on sparse massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) wireless channels. Owing to the sparsity, beamforming is realized using digitally-controlled radio frequency (RF) / intermediate-frequency (IF) phase shifters with constant amplitude constraint for transmit power compliance. A monopulse-based beam tracking technique, using received signal strength indi-cation (RSSI) is adopted to avoid feedback overheads for obvious reasons of efficacy and resource savings. The Matlab implementation of the beam tracking algorithm is also reported. This paper presents a novel radio frequency (RF) beam training algorithm for sparse multiple input multiple output (MIMO) channels using unitary RF beamforming codebooks at transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx). The algorithm leverages statistical knowledge from past beam data for expedited beam search with statistically-minimal training overheads. Beams are tested in the order of their ranks based on their probabilities for providing a communication link. For low beam entropy scenarios, statistically-ranked beam search performs excellent in reducing the average number of beam tests per Tx-Rx beam pair identification for a communication link. For high beam entropy cases, a hybrid algorithm involving both memory-assisted statistically-ranked (MarS) beam search and multi-level (ML) beam search is also proposed. Viele innovative Anwendungen bieten ortsabhängige Dienste an, welche auf diesen Navigationssystemen aufbauen. Allerdings sind diese Dienste in Innenräumen nicht verfügbar. Daher werden seit einigen Jahren alternative Lokalisierungsmethoden für Innenräume aktiv erforscht und entwickelt. Der Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit liegt darauf, die Genauigkeit von Lokalisationsmethoden in Innenräumen zu erhöhen, sowie auf der effektiven Integration der entsprechenden Verfahren in drahtlose Kommunikationssysteme. Es werden zwei Ansätze vorgeschlagen und untersucht, welche die Präzision von ToF-basierten Methoden erhöhen. Zum einen wird im „Modified Equivalent Time Sampling“ (METS) Verfahren eine überabgetastete Version der vom Radioempfänger gelieferten Wellenform erzeugt und zur ToF Bestimmung verwendet. Der zweite erforschte Ansatz hat zum Ziel, Fehler auf Grund von Taktfrequenz-Abweichungen zu kompensieren. Dieses ist für kooperative Lokalisationsmethoden (N-Way ranging) von Bedeutung. Das in der Arbeit entwickelte Verfahren führt zu einer erheblichen Reduzierung der Fehler in der Abstandsmessung und damit der Positionsbestimmung. Darüber hinaus wurde eine neue Methode untersucht, um Lokalisationsverfahren in Funksysteme für die ISM Bänder bei 2,4 GHz und 5 GHz zu integrieren. Die Methode wurde auf einer Software Defined Radio (SDR) Plattform implementiert und bewertet. Es konnte eine Genauigkeit bis zu einem Meter in der Positionsbestimmung demonstriert werden. Schließlich wurde ein Verfahren vorgeschlagen und untersucht, mit welchem Lokalisationsfähigkeit in bestehende Funksysteme integriert werden kann. A huge number of applications offer location based services and navigation functions which rely on these systems. Nevertheless, the offered localization services are not available indoors and their performance is significantly affected in urban areas. Therefore, in the recent years, a large number of wireless indoor localization systems are being actively investigated and developed. The main focus of this work is on improving precision and accuracy of indoor localization systems, as well as on the implementation and integration of localization functionality in wireless data transmission systems. Two approaches for improving the localization precision and accuracy of ToF based methods are proposed. The first approach, referred to as modified equivalent time sampling (METS) is used to reconstruct an oversampled versions of the waveforms acquired at the radio receiver and used for ToF based localization. The second proposed approach is used to compensate the ranging error due to clock frequency offset in cooperative localization schemes like N-Way ranging. This approach significantly reduces the ranging and, therefore, localization errors and has much better performance compared to the existing solutions. An approach for implementation of localization system in the 2.4/5 GHz ISM band is further proposed in this work. This approach is implemented and tested on a software defined radio platform. A ranging precision of better than one meter is demonstrated. Finally, an approach for integrating localization functionality into an arbitrary wireless data transmission system is proposed. This approach is implemented in a 60 GHz wireless system. A ranging precision of one centimeter is demonstrated.

Measurement results for millimeter wave LOS MIMO systems are presented with a focus on time variation and multipath propagation. Different system setups are used, including 2x2 and 3x3 MIMO, and involving different synchronization procedures and front-ends. Furthermore, different propagation scenarios are evaluated, covering a wide area of applications. The results show that the LOS component carries significantly more power than the NLOS components, and that frequency selectivity from front-ends should be taken into account when designing these high bandwidth systems. Frequency offsets and other phase variations due to transmit and receive oscillator differences are treated as part of the channel and thus, depending on the synchronization setup, the MIMO system exhibits different time variations, particularly in the case of independent local oscillators. Therefore, novel wireless backhaul solutions that can support these demands are needed. In this work we present an approach for a millimeter wave line-of-sight MIMO backhaul design, targeting transmission rates in the order of 100 Gbit/s. We provide theoretical foundations for the concept showcasing its potential, which are confirmed through channel measurements. Furthermore, we provide insights into the system design with respect to antenna array setup, baseband processing, synchronization, and channel equalization. Implementation in a 60 GHz demonstrator setup proves the feasibility of the system concept for high throughput backhauling in next generation networks.

In this paper we present measurement results for pure line-of-sight MIMO links operating in the millimeter wave range. We show that the estimated condition numbers and capacities of the measured channels are in good agreement with the theory for various transmission distances and antenna setups. Furthermore, the results show that orthogonal channel vectors can be observed if the spacing criterion is fulfilled, thus facilitating spatial multiplexing and achieving high spectral efficiencies even over fairly long distances. To meet the requirements of 5G mobile networks, several radio access technologies, such as millimeter wave communications and massive MIMO, are being proposed. In addition, cloud radio access network (C-RAN) architectures are considered instrumental to fully exploit the capabilities of future 5G RANs. However, RAN centralization imposes stringent requirements on the transport network, which today are addressed with purpose-specific and expensive fronthaul links. As the demands on future access networks rise, so will the challenges in the fronthaul and backhaul segments. It is hence of fundamental importance to consider the design of transport networks alongside the definition of future access technologies to avoid the transport becoming a bottleneck. Therefore, we analyze in this work the impact that future RAN technologies will have on the transport network and on the design of the next generation fronthaul interface. To understand the especially important impact of varying user traffic, we utilize measurements from a real-world 4G network and, taking target 5G performance figures into account, extrapolate its statistics to a 5G scenario. With this, we derive both per-cell and aggregated data rate requirements for 5G transport networks. In addition, we show that the effect of statistical multiplexing is an important factor to reduce transport network capacity requirements and costs. We propose an optical-wireless 5G infrastructure offering converged fronthauling/backhauling functions to support both operational and end-user cloud services. A layered architectural structure required to efficiently support these services is shown. The data plane performance of the proposed infrastructure is evaluated in terms of energy consumption and service delay through a novel modelling framework. To avoid performance loss due to synchronization latency, the on-chip FIFOs need to be sufficiently large. This, however, often leads to considerable hardware costs. Efficient design solutions of GALS are therefore in great demand. This thesis reports our latest progress in GALS design bases on pausible clocking. Critical design issues on synchronization reliability and communication performance are studied systematically and analytically. A loosely-coupled GALS data-link design is proposed. It supports metastability-free synchronization for sub-cycle clock-tree delay, and accommodates continuous data transfer for high-throughput communication. Only marginal costs of power and silicon area are required. GALS design has been employed to cope with the on-chip digital switching noise in our work. Plesiochronous clocking with power-consumption balance between GALS blocks is in particular explored. Given M clock domains, a reduction of 20lgM dB on the spectral peaks of supply current at the fundamental clock frequency is theoretically derived. In comparison with the existing synchronous design solutions, it thus presents an alternative to effective attenuation of digital switching noise. The developed GALS design methodology has been applied to chip implementation. Two complicated industry-relevant test chips, named Lighthouse and Moonrake, were designed and fabricated using state-of-the-art technologies. The experimental results as well as the on-chip measurements are reported here in detail. We expect that, our work will contribute to the practical applications of GALS design based on pausible clocking in the industry.

Im Vergleich zu den bestehenden synchronen Lösungen, geben diese Methode eine Alternative, um das digitale schaltrauschen effektiv zu senken. Schließlich wurde die entwickelte GALS Design Methodik schon bei reale Chip-Implementierungen angewendet. Zwei komplizierte industriell relevante Test-Chips, Lighthouse und Moonrake, wurden entworfen und mit State-Of-The-Art-Technologien hergestellt. Die experimentellen Ergebnisse bzw., Globally asynchronous locally synchronous (GALS) design presents a solution of scalability and modularity to SoC integration. Today, it has been widely applied in the industry. Most of the GALS systems are based on dual-clock FIFOs for clock domain crossing. To avoid performance loss due to synchronization latency, the on-chip FIFOs need to be sufficiently large. This, however, often leads to considerable hardware costs. Efficient design solutions of GALS are therefore in great demand. This thesis reports our latest progress in GALS design bases on pausible clocking. Critical design issues on synchronization reliability and communication performance are studied systematically and analytically. A loosely-coupled GALS data-link design is proposed. It supports metastability-free synchronization for sub-cycle clock-tree delay, and accommodates continuous data transfer for high-throughput communication. Only marginal costs of power and silicon area are required. GALS design has been employed to cope with the on-chip digital switching noise in our work. Plesiochronous clocking with power-consumption balance between GALS blocks is in particular explored. Given M clock domains, a reduction of 20lgM dB on the spectral peaks of supply current at the fundamental clock frequency is theoretically derived. In comparison with the existing synchronous design solutions, it thus presents an alternative to effective attenuation of digital switching noise. The developed GALS design methodology has been applied to chip implementation. Two complicated industry-relevant test chips, named Lighthouse and Moonrake, were designed and fabricated using state-of-the-art technologies. The experimental results as well as the on-chip measurements are reported here in detail. We expect that, our work will contribute to the practical applications of GALS design based on pausible clocking in the industry.

Based on forecasted developments of mobile IP traffic, the motivation for investigating circuits, and systems for the 60 GHz band is underlined. Some physical properties of 60 GHz radio waves are outlined and implications on potential applications are sketched. The current international and European frequency regulation aspects are presented. The main parameters of three different international standards are summarized and compared with each other. Details of channel spacing and channel bonding are given. Based on the investigation of different applications, the main system requirements are derived. Finally, some information on protocol issues and system integration aspects are given., Peer Reviewed
