Abstract

New hardware and image processing techniques have been combined to develop ACEFLOT, a low-cost instrument to evaluate several physical parameters of flotation froth. It is a system for real-time analysis of the dynamic characteristics of froth, designed for the supervision and control of the copper concentration process. The system includes a rule-based expert system that can recognise possible anomalous operating states and suggest the required remedies. Abstract

An expert system for supervising flotation plants has been based on ACEFLOT, a real-time analyser of froth characteristics. The analyser uses image processing to measure several physical variables, including froth colour, geometry and dynamics. It computes the average value of three colour components of each pixel, localises the centres and edges of bubbles by recognising their shiniest and darkest zones, and computes velocity vectors from image to image at a rate of 20 frames/s. The expert system detects abnormal operational states and suggests corrective actions, supporting operator supervision and control. The system has recently been installed in a Chilean copper plant, where it supervises each of three rougher cells every three minutes. The hardware includes three video acquisition subsystems, a communications subsystem and a processing subsystem.
