Abstract

THESEUS is an ESA space based project, aiming to explore the early universe by unveiling a complete census of Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) population in the first billion years. This goal is expected to be achieved by combined observations of its three instruments: the Soft X-ray Imager (SXI), the X and Gamma Imaging Spectrometer (XGIS) and the InfraRed Telescope (IRT). In particular, the IRT instrument will help to identify, localise and study the afterglow of the GRBs detected by SXI and XGIS, and about $40\%$ of its time will be devoted to an all-sky photometric survey, which will certainly detect a relevant number of extragalactic sources, including Quasars. In this paper, we focus on the capability of IRT-THESEUS Telescope to observe Quasars and, in particular, those objects lensed by foreground galaxies. In our analysis, we consider the Quasar Luminosity Function (QLF) in the infrared band based obtained by the Spitzer Space Telescope imaging survey. Furthermore, by using the mass-luminosity distribution function of galaxies and the galaxy/Quasar redshift distributions, we preformed Monte Carlo simulations to estimate the number of lensed Quasars. We predict that up to $2.14 \times 10^5$ Quasars can be observed during gthe IRT-Theseus sky survey, and about $140$ of them could be lensed by foreground galaxies. Abstract

Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) are the most powerful transients in the Universe, over-shining for a few seconds all other $\gamma$-ray sky sources. Their emission is produced within narrowly collimated relativistic jets launched after the core-collapse of massive stars or the merger of compact binaries. THESEUS will open a new window for the use of GRBs as cosmological tools by securing a statistically significant sample of high-$z$ GRBs, as well as by providing a large number of GRBs at low-intermediate redshifts extending the current samples to low luminosities. The wide energy band and unprecedented sensitivity of the Soft X-ray Imager (SXI) and X-Gamma rays Imaging Spectrometer (XGIS) instruments provide us a new route to unveil the nature of the prompt emission. For the first time, a full characterisation of the prompt emission spectrum from 0.3 keV to 10 MeV with unprecedented large count statistics will be possible revealing the signatures of synchrotron emission. SXI spectra, extending down to 0.3 keV, will constrain the local metal absorption and, for the brightest events, the progenitors' ejecta composition. Investigation of the nature of the internal energy dissipation mechanisms will be obtained through the systematic study with XGIS of the sub-second variability unexplored so far over such a wide energy range. THESEUS will follow the spectral evolution of the prompt emission down to the soft X-ray band during the early steep decay and through the plateau phase with the unique ability of extending above 10 keV the spectral study of these early afterglow emission phases., Comment: Submitted to Experimental Astronomy

Abstract

THESEUS is a space mission concept aimed at exploiting Gamma-Ray Bursts for investigating the early Universe and at providing a substantial advancement of multi-messenger and time-domain astrophysics. These goals will be achieved through a unique combination of instruments allowing GRB and X-ray transient detection over a broad field of view (more than 1sr) with 0.5–1 arcmin localization, an energy band extending from several MeV down to 0.3 keV and high sensitivity to transient sources in the soft X-ray domain, as well as on-board prompt (few minutes) follow-up with a 0.7 m class IR telescope with both imaging and spectroscopic capabilities. THESEUS will be perfectly suited for addressing the main open issues in cosmology such as, e.g., star formation rate and metallicity evolution of the inter-stellar and intra-galactic medium up to redshift ∼10, signatures of Pop III stars, sources and physics of re-ionization, and the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function. In addition, it will provide unprecedented capability to monitor the X-ray variable sky, thus detecting, localizing, and identifying the electromagnetic counterparts to sources of gravitational radiation, which may be routinely detected in the late ’20s/early ’30s by next generation facilities like aLIGO/ aVirgo, eLISA, KAGRA, and Einstein Telescope. THESEUS will also provide powerful synergies with the next generation of multi-wavelength observatories (e.g., LSST, ELT, SKA, CTA, ATHENA).

Abstract

THESEUS is a space mission concept aimed at exploiting Gamma-Ray Bursts for investigating the early Universe and at providing a substantial advancement of multi-messenger and time-domain astrophysics. These goals will be achieved through a unique combination of instruments allowing GRB and X-ray transient detection over a broad field of view (more than 1 sr) with 0.5-1 arcmin localization, an energy band extending from several MeV down to 0.3 keV and high sensitivity to transient sources in the soft X-ray domain, as well as on-board prompt (few minutes) follow-up with a 0.7 m class IR telescope with both imaging and spectroscopic capabilities. THESEUS will be perfectly suited for addressing the main open issues in cosmology such as, e.g., star formation rate and metallicity evolution of the inter-stellar and intra-galactic medium up to redshift similar to 10, signatures of Pop III stars, sources and physics of re-ionization, and the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function. In addition, it will provide unprecedented capability to monitor the X-ray variable sky, thus detecting, localizing, and identifying the electromagnetic counterparts to sources of gravitational radiation, which may be routinely detected in the late '20s/early '30s by next generation facilities like aLIGO/ aVirgo, eLISA, KAGRA, and Einstein Telescope. Abstract

Abstract

THESEUS is a space mission concept aimed at exploiting Gamma-Ray Bursts for investigating the early Universe and at providing a substantial advancement of multi-messenger and time-domain astrophysics. These goals will be achieved through a unique combination of instruments allowing GRB and X-ray transient detection over a broad field of view (more than 1sr) with 0.5–1 arcmin localization, an energy band extending from several MeV down to 0.3 keV and high sensitivity to transient sources in the soft X-ray domain, as well as on-board prompt (few minutes) follow-up with a 0.7 m class IR telescope with both imaging and spectroscopic capabilities. THESEUS will be perfectly suited for addressing the main open issues in cosmology such as, e.g., star formation rate and metallicity evolution of the inter-stellar and intra-galactic medium up to redshift 10, signatures of Pop III stars, sources and physics of re-ionization, and the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function. In addition, it will provide unprecedented capability to monitor the X-ray variable sky, thus detecting, localizing, and identifying the electromagnetic counterparts to sources of gravitational radiation, which may be routinely detected in the late ’20s/early ’30s by next generation facilities like aLIGO/ aVirgo, eLISA, KAGRA, and Einstein Telescope. THESEUS will also provide powerful synergies with the next generation of multi-wavelength observatories (e.g., LSST, ELT, SKA, CTA, ATHENA).

These goals will be achieved through a unique combination of instruments allowing GRB and X-ray transient detection over a broad field of view (more than 1sr) with 0.5-1 arcmin localization, an energy band extending from several MeV down to 0.3 keV and high sensitivity to transient sources in the soft X-ray domain, as well as on-board prompt (few minutes) follow-up with a 0.7 m class IR telescope with both imaging and spectroscopic capabilities. THESEUS will be perfectly suited for addressing the main open issues in cosmology such as, e.g., star formation rate and metallicity evolution of the inter-stellar and intra-galactic medium up to redshift $\sim$10, signatures of Pop III stars, sources and physics of re-ionization, and the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function. In addition, it will provide unprecedented capability to monitor the X-ray variable sky, thus detecting, localizing, and identifying the electromagnetic counterparts to sources of gravitational radiation, which may be routinely detected in the late '20s / early '30s by next generation facilities like aLIGO/ aVirgo, eLISA, KAGRA, and Einstein Telescope. Abstract

Free-floating planets are recently drawing a special interest of the scientific community. Gravitational microlensing is up to now the exclusive method for the investigation of free-floating planets, including their spatial distribution function and mass function. In this work, we examine the possibility that the future Euclid space-based observatory may allow to discover a substantial number of microlensing events caused by free-floating planets. Based on latest results about the free-floating planet mass function in the mass range $[10^{-5}, 10^{-2}]M_{\odot}$, we calculate the optical depth towards the Galactic bulge as well as the expected microlensing rate and find that Euclid may be able to detect hundreds to thousands of these events per month. Abstract

This study describes the application of optical fiber in measuring moisture content in honey. The determination of moisture content in honey is important because the purity of honey is mainly dependent on its moisture content. The composition of honeys depends upon the composition of nectar. In general, major composition of honey is sugar (70%-80%) which consists of fructose (35%-45%) followed by glucose (30%-35%) and sucrose (1%-3%). Besides sugar, honey also has small quantities of vitamins, minerals, proteins and amino acids. Moisture content of honey is usually e content. The measurements that can be conducted using this technique are reflection, transmission and absorbance. The measurement system in this project consists of a light source, cuvette, reflection probe, fiber optic cable and a UV-NIR spectrometer to measure the samples reflectivity, transmission and absorbance. The relationship between reflectivity and moisture content of honey was studied at different wavelengths. The relationship was used to obtain an empirical formula to predict the moisture content in honey.

16. The lag and duration-luminosity relations of gamma-ray burst pulses

Abstract

Relations linking the temporal or/and spectral properties of the prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts (hereafter GRBs) to the absolute luminosity are of great importance as they both constrain the radiation mechanisms and represent potential distance indicators. Here we discuss two such relations: the lag-luminosity relation and the newly discovered duration-luminosity relation of GRB pulses. We aim to extend our previous work on the origin of spectral lags, using the duration-luminosity relation recently discovered by Hakkila et al. to connect lags and luminosity. We also present a way to test this relation which has originally been established with a limited sample of only 12 pulses. We relate lags to the spectral evolution and shape of the pulses with a linear expansion of the pulse properties around maximum. We then couple this first result to the duration-luminosity relation to obtain the lag-luminosity and lag-duration relations. We finally use a Monte-Carlo method to generate a population of synthetic GRB pulses which is then used to check the validity of the duration-luminosity relation. Our theoretical results for the lag and duration-luminosity relations are in good agreement with the data. They are rather insensitive to the assumptions regarding the burst spectral parameters. Our Monte Carlo analysis of a population of synthetic pulses confirms that the duration-luminosity relation must be satisfied to reproduce the observational duration-peak flux diagram of BATSE GRB pulses. The newly discovered duration-luminosity relation offers the possibility to link all three quantities: lag, duration and luminosity of GRB pulses in a consistent way. Microlensing and pixel-lensing surveys play a fundamental role in the searches for galactic dark matter and in the study of the galactic structure. Recent observations suggest the presence of a population of old white dwarfs with high proper motion, probably in the galactic halo, with local mass density in the range $1.3\times 10^{-4}-4.4\times 10^{-3} M_{\odot}$ pc$^{-3}$, in addition to the standard galactic stellar disk and dark halo components. Investigation of the signatures on microlensing results towards the LMC of these different lens populations, with particular emphasis to white dwarfs, is the main purpose of the present paper. This is done by evaluating optical depth and microlensing rate of the various lens populations and then calculating through a Montecarlo program, the probability that a lens which has caused a microlensing event of duration $t_{\rm E}$ belongs to a certain galactic population. Data obtained by the MACHO Collaboration allow us to set an upper bound of $1.6\times 10^{-3} M_{\odot}$ pc$^{-3}$ to the local mass density of white dwarfs distributed in spheroidal models, while for white dwarfs in disk models all values for the local mass density are in agreement with observational results., Comment: in press on International Journal of modern Physics D
